IPAF

IPAF to launch 2019 Global Safety Campaign at bauma The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) will officially launch its 2019 global safety campaign at the giant bauma construction equipment showcase near Munich, Germany, 8-14 April 2019. This is an ideal opportunity to engage the European industry and promote safer use of MEWPs. The IPAF stand is confirmed as 711 in C4 hall of the exhibition site and will offer a chance for delegates to review the updated IPAF MEWPs for Managers course, which is available for the first time as eLearning. As was the case with many of IPAF’s event appearances throughout 2018, the stand will feature a sophisticated MEWP simulator, to help showcase some of the recommendations of the recently published IPAF eXtended Reality (XR) Strategy document. IPAF will also offer updated safety and technical guidance, a selection of Andy Access safety posters and accompanying Toolbox Talks, and visitors to the IPAF stand will also be able to pick up copies of the latest IPAF

magazines for 2019 in English, German and Italian, and be able to take advantage of a special discounted rate when pre-ordering the 2019 IPAF Global Powered Access Rental Marketreports. Meanwhile, the larger-than-life Andy Access mascot will once again be in attendance, inviting exhibition-goers to pose for selfies and encouraging visitors to come to visit the stand to meet IPAF representatives, to try the interactive demonstrations or to pick up a range of safety materials including stickers, posters, leaflets and publications. The IPAF 2019 safety campaign has been created to address the increase in accidents while operating a MEWP alongside or on roadways. This trend has been identified through IPAF’s accident reporting project, and is a significant cause of work at height accidents in Europe. Based on real-world incidents the campaign will emphasise the effectiveness of planning and traffic management to

reduce the danger of operating near pedestrians and vehicle traffic. Tim Whiteman, CEO & MD of IPAF, comments: “The eyes of the world will be on bauma, with upwards of halfa-million visitors expected across the week-long event, so it’s a truly unique opportunity for IPAF to showcase the latest advances in its training programme and its safety and technical guidance. It’s exciting that once again we will be able to utilise the latest technology developed by one of our member firms to showcase the awesome power of MEWP simulators in enhancing training, and to share the latest important IPAF publications including IPAF-Journal in German and the UK’s IPAF Powered Access magazine. “Visitors to the IPAF stand will also learn about the latest global safety campaign based on IPAF’s most recent accident analysis. Beyond the campaign IPAF always aims to help managers plan for and supervise work at height, and for operators to use MEWPs safely and effectively. “IPAF’s safety and technical guidance is available in many languages and our staff are available to help with any queries. The evidence is clear that working at height is significantly safer when using a MEWP.” For more details about IPAF’s global MEWP safety campaigns visit www.ipaf.org/safe and for more details about IPAF at bauma 2019 and all upcoming event appearances see www.ipaf.org/ events.

the residents or pedestrians. Even working in closed spaces emissionfree is also possible. Project Manager Thomas Vilain describes the challenge as follows: “It is a steep way from the idea to the completion of the E-STEIGER”. “During the IAA 2018, it was confirmed that not any series manufacturers offer vehicles with electric drive in this weight class. Furthermore, not any series manufacturers will in the future authorize access to its batteries for external consumers,” he explains. “Our search was concentrated on companies modifying combustion engines to electric drives”. After comprehensive research and technical discussions, RUTHMANN has chosen a development partner. “We have found a competent partner in the vehicle conversion company ORTEN Electric-Trucks having together with its partner EFA-S a considerable experience in the modification of Sprinter chassis”, says Thomas Vilain. After the STEIGER has already been completely assembled by RUTHMANN, it will currently be modified by the company Orten in Wittlich in order to be on time for the bauma. As first manufacturer of aerial working platform, RUTHMANN offers a unique concept of electric drive: The traction battery of the Sprinter is simultaneously used for driving

the Steiger. Therefore it requires only one charging device for the complete machine. The charging time by means of a 380 V charging station with 22KW amounts to maximum 4 hours depending on the size of the battery. Even common 230 V sockets can also be employed for charging. The AMPERO TBR 250 E can then be charged on working site by the customer. The battery capacity lasts for a complete working day with for example 100 kilometres in urban traffic plus approximately 30 working cycles corresponding to a continuous operation of the STEIGER of 4 hours. RUTHMANN has in advance and confidentially presented the project

The company Orten Electric-Trucks disassembles completely the Sprinter diesel engine and replaces it by an electric drive

“E-STEIGER” to its long-standing customer GERKEN from Düsseldorf who was immediately deeply impressed by this idea. Christian Gerken is aware of the concerns of his customers. Lots of companies and municipalities work in filled city centres and are afraid of being restricted through ban on diesel vehicles in the future. In order to enable flexible working conditions for its customers and in order to save the environment, Christian Gerken made a quick decision and bought the first RUTHMANN AMPERO TBR 250 E. Thereby, Gerken is once again a forerunner and he will be able from June to rent exclusively to his customers the innovative electric STEIGER AMPERO TBR 250 E.◀

The new RUTHMANN AMPERO is 100 % electrically operated and is therefore filled with current instead of diesel

PALFINGER will be at bauma 2019 to showcase the latest developments and innovations in the field of digitalization and service Miriam Spada

P

ALFINGER has for many years been ‘ALREADY CONNECTED TO THE FUTURE’ and a driver of innovation in the field of Customer Lifting Solutions. In keeping with this motto, PALFINGER will be at bauma 2019 to showcase the latest developments and innovations in the field of digitalization and service all under one roof. The main aim here is to demonstrate just how much digital technology

10  RIS > n. 1 February-March 2019

of the future is already packed into PALFINGER’s high-tech solutions – from the PALFINGER Connected telematics solutions for optimising crane capacity utilisation (Fleet Monitor and Operator Monitor) and sophisticated control and assistance systems for access platforms and cranes, to augmented-reality support with Smart Eye, which allows service technicians anywhere in the world to communicate with HQ.

HALL FN.826/9 @ bauma

So just like at IAA 2018, PALFINGER’s trade fair stand at bauma 2019 will feature its own dedicated space for digitalization and service, where visitors can experience cutting-edge innovation up close. Special virtual reality (VR) simulators, for example, will give visitors the chance to operate the latest PALFINGER products such as the modular crawler crane, the PK 135.002 TEC 7 heavy-duty crane and PALFINGER access platforms and experience

for themselves all the benefits in a virtual space. There will also be an additional VR crane simulator featuring a top seat, an electronic joystick control system and the new HPSC-Plus LOAD system. This feature detects the current truck load, thereby making it possible to increase the outreach of the loader crane. Trade fair visitors will also have an opportunity to explore the interface and benefits of PALFINGER Connected telematics solutions along with all the latest developments in the field of PALFINGER service. At bauma 2019, PALFINGER will be showcasing more than 20 different installations on two trade fair stands covering a total area of 1,900 m2.

The future has already begun The digital transformation and a high degree of agility are key that PALFINGER always has one foot in the future. For customers, this means that PALFINGER never stops enhancing and refining products so that they are even easier to handle, can be sched-

uled even more efficiently, feature even smarter technology to facilitate maintenance and are even safer to operate. This interplay of factors can be seen in the fully comprehensive PALFINGER Connected telematics system, which comprises two applications: Fleet Monitor and Operator Monitor. Fleet Monitor is a web application for managers, schedulers and service managers, while Operator Monitor is a mobile app for crane operators. In practice, these two digital tools help to boost efficiency and productivity by showing not only which equipment is in operation, where and for how long but also how the crane and load can be optimally deployed. They thereby ensure the level of transparency required for optimal capacity utilisation, minimal downtime and, in turn, smooth fleet management. Smart Boom Control is the name of the new boom tip controller for loader cranes. Thanks to Smart Boom Control, all the operator has to do is specify the direction of movement of the boom tip, while PALTRONIC calculates the necessary movement combination. This makes cranes equipped with Smart Boom Control much easier

Following the world premiere of the PCC 115.002 at the IAA in Hanover, PALFINGER will now be unveiling the new PCC series at bauma 2019. The PALFINGER Crawler Crane is a true pioneer, specialising in the most challenging of jobs. Its versatility is apparent even when before it reaches the work site, as the crane and crawler can be transported separately and then combined in different ways during operation. This means that depending on the application, the crane can be either mounted on a truck or operated on its own stabilisers without any need for the crawler. This adaptability ensures both maximum flexibility and maximum performance. Whether on impassable terrain, in urban areas, on large construction sites or in confined industrial or indoor environments, the crane is powerful and flexible and can rise to any challenge.

New TEC and SOLID models The high-tech TEC cranes offer a large selection of comfort and assistance systems. The polygonal Pprofile significantly increases performance while maintaining a low dead weight. Ten new TEC models in the 25–37-tonne-metre class offer all the features of a PALFINGER heavy-duty crane and will be available from 2019. The following cranes will be presented: PK 37.002 TEC 7 (with continuous slewing system), PK 35.002 TEC 5 (with rack and pinion slewing system), PK 30.002 TEC 7 (continuous) with Smart Boom Control (see above) and PK 26.002 TEC 3 (with rack and pinion slewing system). In addi-

tion, with the PK 58.002 TEC 7 prototype, the first ever TEC crane in the 50–60-tonne-metre class will also be unveiled at bauma. Other new models at bauma will include the PK 24.001 SLD 6 and PK 21.501 SLD 3 from the SOLID range, which offer outstanding lifting capacity for simple loading tasks. These will be the first SLD cranes in the heavier 20–25-tonne-metre class. In the heavy-duty crane segment, PALFINGER will be showcasing the PK 135.002 TEC 7. Thanks to its outstanding ratio of lifting capacity to dead weight, this model specialises in heavy loads and tasks that require

12  RIS > n. 1 February-March 2019

long outreach. Its diverse range of applications includes everything from heavy-duty jobs through to intricate installation work.

Electrification at PALFINGER With the P 370 KS E, PALFINGER is launching the first ever electrically operated access platform. This premium-class platform is quiet, efficient and emissions-free, making it ideal for night-time and indoor work as well as for use on construction sites in urban areas. At the heart of this pioneering access platform is an intelligent energy management system that ensures the smooth interaction of components such as the electric motor with hy-

P 370 KS E

draulic pump and the integrated battery charging system. The P 370 KS E combines a diesel drive system with an electric drive system, which means that it offers the performance and service life of a diesel engine at low operating costs. Also set to be presented at bauma 2019 is the concept of the PK 18502 SH loader crane, which can be operated not only with a plug-in electric drive but also fully autonomously with a battery pack.

april 8-14

2019 The new access platforms from PALFINGER For the first time ever in the history of PALFINGER access platforms, we will be showcasing a selection of models from the entire global platform portfolio. User-friendliness is the hallmark of the Light class NX, which will be represented at bauma by two new models: the P 220 BK and P 280 CK. These two Light class NX models, which are designed for use in municipal applications and can be operated by anyone holding a standard driving licence, feature an impressive range of operator assistance systems that enable flexible outreach calculation (LMB), high basket loads (300 kg), easy stabiliser control at the vehicle base and, as a result, almost completely intuitive operation. The P 180 BK is also now available. With the P 130 A, PALFINGER has brought the Smart class to the pick-up – with a maximum working height of 13 metres, a maximum lateral outreach of 6.30 metres and a total weight of 3,200 kg. Since the model is extremely userfriendly and learning how to operate it is no trouble at all, it is perfect for the rental market.

With the P 200 AXE, PALFINGER has developed an extremely compact design for access platforms in the Smart class. At a gross weight of 3.5 tonnes and with a length of just 5.39 metres in the transport position, this is the perfect solution for tight spaces.

and, thanks to the many optional features available, they can be very easily adapted in line with highly specialised requirements.

It was at bauma 2016 that PALFINGER unveiled the P 150 AJTK, demonstrating just how easily access platforms can be deployed even on crawlers. Now, PALFINGER is presenting the biggest platform in the Tracked class: the P 250 AJTK, which is designed for working heights of up to 25 metres and rounds off the range. Its compact dimensions make it ideal for sites that are hard for truck-mounted platforms to access. Meanwhile, since the crawlers function independently, the platform is easy to manoeuvre on muddy or uneven terrain. An additional electric variant is ideal for enclosed spaces such as shopping centres, stadia and churches because it produces zero emissions.

In the hookloader family, the PH T 20 TEC 5 is the first telescopic model to be available in the high-tech TEC 5 version. The innovative PAD-Touch cabin controller combines two control concepts: load-moving tasks are controlled by a compact joystick terminal, while all additional functions are operated via the touchscreen, which can also be connected to an optional rear camera for maximum user-friendliness.

Other highlights in PALFINGER’s platform portfolio include the new insulated lifting platform with an outreach of almost 14 metres. These are already being successfully deployed by a number of energy supply companies

About PALFINGER AG For many years PALFINGER has been one of the world’s leading manufacturers of innovative lifting solutions for use on commercial vehicles and in the maritime field. As a multinational group headquartered in Bergheim, Austria, the PALFINGER Group, which has approx. 11,000 employees, generated total sales of approx. EUR 1.6 billion in 2018. The Group has manufacturing and assembly facilities in Europe, CIS, North and South America, as well as Asia. The pillars of its

corporate strategy are innovation, internationalization, enhanced flexibility of products, services and processes, and PALFINGER 21st (the development of smart solutions and innovative, databased business models). PALFINGER is regarded not only as the market leader, but also the technology leader, in the global market for hydraulic loader cranes. With a network of more than 5,000 sales and service centres located in over 130 countries across all continents, PALFINGER is always in proximity to its customers.

PALFINGER offers optimal solutions for the recycling industry

The PH T20 TEC 5 will also be presented for the first time ever with a prototype version of the newly developed Hookloader Vision System (patent pending). This system detects the roller container and semi-automatically steers the articulated arm to the correct take-up position. The PAD-Touch controller touchscreen also makes it easier for operators to control the roller container. The PH T 20 TEC 5 will be presented at bauma in combination with an EPSILON M12L crane. The performance and robustness of the EPSILON M12L means that not only is it ideal for the recycling industry, but it can also be used with clamshell grabbers on construction sites. Mounted on a skip and equipped with hydraulic stabiliser legs that can be slewed through 180°, the EPSILON M12L can also easily be lowered when required. The crane operator can control it not only from the ground, but also, of course, from Masterdrive – a high-tech top seat that is both extremely comfortable and easy to use.◀

A flash... of genius Flash Battery technology has made Kaitek Flash Battery a leading company in the production of lithium batteries for the industrial market Elisa Montori and Riccardo Bulgarelli

“T

hose who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those doing it.” This quote, attributed to Albert Einstein, sums up well the dedication and passion behind the company built up by Marco Righi, current CEO of Kaitek. A futuristic vision, that has inspired the climb

towards success of Kaitek, an innovative and dynamic Italian company from Emilia-Romagna – Calerno to be precise, a district of Sant’Ilario d’Enza, in the provincial territory of Reggio Emilia – that has literally revolutionised the market for lithium batteries. With its revolutionary composition, Flash Battery technology has made

Kaitek Flash Battery a leading company in the production of lithium batteries for the industrial market. In Italy Kaitek is in fact the only company able to integrate lithium batteries with a highly advanced remote control system which makes it possible to analyse and check the state and condition of the batteries on a daily basis.

2019

First of all let’s take a step back The revolutionary idea that led to the foundation of the company came to light thanks to a childhood spent around technology: Marco Righi in fact spent his youth at his father’s firm, where high frequency battery chargers were produced. Following the bitter disappointment of the family firm being sold, the passion of young Marco for the field didn’t abate, far from it: in 2009 he came into contact with those lithium batteries for which he already knew the limits and potential, and which led him to transform the whole market sector. Compared with lead batteries, the potential of the new lithium technology was vast but a revolutionary approach was needed from a technical point of view in order to overcome the prejudices of those around it. The main problem was the poor reliability of the control electronics and that was the starting point for the new company.

“Ever since the beginning of our partnership, we found Flash Battery to have the know-how and ability to develop and supply a customised solution within the timescale required by the market”

teries reliable but also of integrating their advantages with a completely revolutionary management control system. The mission of Kaitek Flash Battery is to provide lithium batteries for producers of industrial machinery and electric vehicles with average volumes of production and high requirements in terms of personalisation. The Flash Battery brand stands for the two intrinsic strengths of lithium batteries in Italy: recharging speed and zero regular maintenance. In Italy, Flash Battery is the lithium battery with the fastest recharging

times and requires no maintenance thanks to the owner’s system of remote control. This innovation has made it possible for Kaitek to become a valuable worldleading technological partner for automatised logistics, electric vehicles and in the field of industrial machinery. The company is present in over 54 countries all over the world. In 2018 Kaitek Flash Batter had 45 employees and a turnover of 13.5 million euro, and has no intention to stopping there.

Marco Righi, together with his lifelong friend Alan Pastorelli (now Technical Manager), founded Kaitek in 2012, with the aim of not only making lithium bat-

Flash Battery: any faster than this The excellent performance of lithium in terms of energy and weight, together with our experience and technical know-how, have made it possible for Flash Battery to create technologically advanced lithium batteries. Conceived for better performance than any other battery, they possess unique advantages. Continued research by Flash Battery has led to three important innovations: a system of combined active and passive balancing which maintains the cells equalised and efficient for the entire lifetime of the battery (over 3000 cycles); the Flash Data Centre, through which batteries can be checked remotely and any neces-

2019 Case History: the road sweeper with a Flash Battery The Kaitek Flash Battery - Dulevo partnership began in 2016, when it became necessary to create a fully electric road sweeper for the market. And so it was. Dulevo, leader in the production of road sweeping machines, is present in 70 countries throughout the world and has created the first electric road sweeper capable of matching the performance of endothermic sweepers. There’s such good cooperation and synergy between the two companies that a new combined project has been launched with machines and batteries being designed together. This has allowed us to optimise space and performance, going so far as to equal those of endothermic sweepers both in terms of cleaning capacity and duration. Kaitek Flash Battery has developed a totally customised electric road sweeper equipped with Flash Battery lithium batteries, which guarantees: ▶▶ Zero emissions, reducing the environmental impact of the sweeper machine ▶▶ Noise reduction, for optimal use also within historic town centres ▶▶ Rapid charging, allowing for use on more than one work shift ▶▶ High temperature range – the integrated and automatic battery heating systems make it possible to use even at low temperatures ▶▶ IP65 level of resistance – the road sweepers can be used in unfa-

vourable weather conditions (rain, humidity or dust) ▶▶ 3G system – daily remote control of the vehicle in any part of the world In addition to these characteristics, it was fundamental to understand the real usage and actual performance of the machine: thanks to the remote control function, a series of data is available in real time, allowing us to run an in depth analysis on the machine and to find out how the battery is working. The advanced remote control makes it possible to carry out diagnoses, update software and modify the battery set-up directly from a remote location. The battery is also equipped with an Alert System allowing prevention for any false alarms or potential problems which, if not fixed, could cause the machine to shut down. Currently, there are over 70 remote controlled Dzero vehicles in existence.

At the end of 2018, our consolidated partnership brought to light a brand new project which involves the development of a CSS 2 combined recharging system to recharge vehicles with standard automotive connectors, that is those used by the contemporary Model 3 Tesla.◀
