industry development level but also top Chinese construction machinery enterprises and brands. The conference was moderated by Wang Guiqing, Vice President of CCCME. Mr. Qijun, President of CCMA introduced the achievements and developments of Chinese construction equipment industry. During the press conference Presidents or Chairmans of top Chinese construction machinery manufacturers shared the opinions on “One Belt and One Road” initiative, globalization developments, independent innovation, industrial developments and trends. Mr. Davide Cipolla - Cifa’s CEO - reported the new direction taken by CIFA following the acquisition by Zoomlion, in 2008. This acquisition «gave great opportunities to Cifa both for the advantages of the great synergies in sales and supply chain but also in new fresh investments and possibility to Cifa’s repositioning in the new technology developments and product quality» said Mr. Cipolla. «The first immediate strategy after the acquisition was to take advantage of the greater synergies we had with Zoomlion, to enter directly the Chinese market and mainly open a factory in China. The second important strategy was to invest in our Italian factories, to increase brand positioning of Cifa. Today Cifa and Zoomlion are the only ones that design and produce machines in the concrete construction field with the use of carbon fiber technology in the booms, with saving of weight and having longer and stronger boom in the market and Hybrid-electric technology, with important saving of fuel, noise and pollution, so machines environmental friendly.» And Mr. Cipolla concluded: «With the further stabilization of the global economy and the increased economy in Eu-

ropean markets and the further promotion of “One Belt and One Road” initiative, the overseas business of Zoomlion Group will achieve quality and stable growth and Cifa will play an important role in this growth.» During his speech, Mr. Peiguo Wu Chairman of China SINOMACH Heavy Industry Corporation - started with the explanation of the name of his company: «SINO stands for “China”; MACH stands for “Machinery.” SINOMACH is the logo of China National Machinery Industry Corporation, and it is also a high-end brand that SINOMACH strives to build around the world.» Then Mr. Peiguo Wu focused on SINOMACH’s history: «SINOMACH is a company under the SINOMACH Group with construction machinery as its core business. It was established in 2011. Although the brand of SINOMACH is young in the construction machinery industry, it has amassed four major families of Chinese construction machinery: Changlin, Luojian, Dingsheng and Changjiang, which all have a long history and profound technical background.» And what about “One Belt and One Road” initiative? «In 7-year integration, SINOMACH actively implements the “One Belt, One Road” development strategy and relies on the strong

overseas market resources of SINOMACH Group to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with countries along the “Belt and Road.” Currently, it has established marketing networks in more than 130 countries and regions including in these countries. SINOMACH products are widely used in Africa, Asia, South America, and Oceania. And has been set its assembling bases in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and West Africa» said Mr. Wu. Today SINOMACH is ranked among the top 50 of the world’s construction machinery industry and is the 8th main construction machinery industry in China. In 2018 LiuGong is celebrating 60-years of growth, commitment and innovation. Today LiuGong has 19 product lines, 8 regional subsidiaries in 5 continents, 3 overseas manufacturing facilities (India, Brazil, Poland), 5 regional R&D centres (China, India, Poland, United States and England) and 19 dealers in 20 countries. Mr. Howard Dale - Chairman of LiuGong Europe & LiuGong Dressta Machinery - is sure that «developing the presence of LiuGong in Europe is a strategic driver for LiuGong’s globalization.» In fact LiuGong has identified a 5-point European investment plan to realize its growth objectives and enable

“One Belt and One Road” The “New Silk Road Economic Belt” and the “21st-century Maritime Silk Road” or the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI) is a development strategy proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013 that focuses on connectivity and cooperation between Eurasian countries, primarily the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the ocean-going Maritime Silk Road (MSR). The initiative was known in English as the “One Belt and One Road” Initiative (OBOR) until 2016.

construction. Marketable products and equipment solution packages can be provided to clients in countries along the “Belt and Road” on the one hand, and economic growth and new employment opportunities are brought to these countries by fully making use of their localized resources on the other hand.» Today XCMG has currently established branch companies in Russia, India, Poland and assembly plants in Uzbekistan, Poland, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and owns more than 100 distribution branches and spare parts branches, more than 20 offices along the “Belt and Road”, and is gradually improving the marketing network in this countries. «European market also has been one of the overseas markets where great im-

portance is attached by XCMG» said Mr. Dongsheng Yang. «To provide satisfactory solution packages for European clients and create value for European clients is also a tireless pursuit of XCMG.»

Not only the press conference In addition to the press conference, a series of activities has been carried out to promote the Chinese construction machinery brand, including the publications of “Chinese Construction Equipment Report 2018”, the Chinese Pavilion at INTERMAT, which showed the R&D system, intelligent manufacturing equipment, high quality of products and perfect after-sale service system.◀

A firm foundation signed by Wirtgen Group The new Benninghoven plant in Wittlich is being built over a sizable area of 310,000 m2 for 130 million Euros. One thing is sure: It will stand on a firm foundation, because Wirtgen soil stabilizers and Hamm rollers created the load-bearing base for it Miriam Spada

F

irst up on the site were the civil engineers. A key part of their task was to create level and load-bearing surfaces for the 60,000-m2 production and logistics hall, the 12,000-m2 central building with offices and the traffic routes. The terrain was completely remodeled and stabilized to that end. “The height difference was originally around 8-9 m. Leveling the area required removing and replacing some 400,000 m3 of soil,” explains Heinrich

The Wirtgen soil stabilizers poured 50-75 kg of a lime-cement mixture into every square meter of soil in each layer – that‘s around 23,000 t across the whole site

Plein, Production Engineer at Benninghoven and member of the internal construction site management team. He is delighted that the site is getting a little bit closer to the desired form each day, because his sights are firmly fixed on the goal: “We are laying the ground for an advanced production facility that will enable us to manufacture premium mixing plants in higher quantities than before. That’s why quality has been a key concern right from the start – and the base is where it all begins.”

Quality from A-Z Playing the main roles in this foundation work: Two Wirtgen soil stabilizers and up to six Hamm compactors. The team from EBS Bodenstabilisierungs GmbH used the soil stabilizers to expertly mix in a lime-cement mixture

tailored to the soil quality in up to 12 layers, each 40 cm deep. EBS proprietor Jürgen Scharnbach specialized in soil stabilization and improvement 35 years ago – and is still successful and highly satisfied with Wirtgen equipment: “The Wirtgen soil stabilizers are the best on the market, particularly in terms of working speed, longevity and handling.” Once the binder had been mixed in, civil engineering general contractor Strabag AG had Hamm compactors waiting in the wings for the all-important compaction work. The first passes were completed by multiple compactors with padfoot drums working in pairs or trios. Two further compactors with smooth drums then saw to the final compaction. The result was convincing: “All the load-bearing capacity and compac-

tion values measured met the requirements of the construction contract. The individual layers are even, smooth and have no cracks – a textbook example,” according to Eduard Weber, Building Material Inspector with sbt, the road and concrete construction lab charged with quality assurance.

Tried-and-tested brand duo hits the mark Site Managers Kristina Fischer and Siena Schneider of Strabag AG are also highly satisfied with the work produced by the machines, because “so far only heavy frost and pouring rain have held up our plans. Unlike the stabilizing equipment from Wirtgen and Hamm. The machines work perfectly and reliably, so we don‘t need to worry. That’s the way it should be.”

Soil compaction was completed by Hamm compactors with padfood drums. Compactors with smooth drums then saw to the final compaction

Coming full circle It was matter of honor that the subsequent asphalting work for Benninghoven was also performed with Wirtgen Group machines. So it was fitting that one of the first ever Benninghoven asphalt mixing plants – constructed in Ürzig more than 30 years ago and owned by Juchem – delivered the asphalt for the paths, roads, parking and storage areas on the new grounds, and that this was then paved and compacted using Wirtgen Group technologies.◀

The stable foundation for the future employee parking lot was laid by the trainees of the Wirtgen Group on their Trainee Technology Days

8  MT > n. 4 - May 2018

“We are highly satisfied with the work that the Wirtgen soil stabilizers and Hamm compactors are delivering here,” said the delighted site management team from Strabag AG: Site Manager B. Eng. Kristina Fischer, Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Siena Schneider and Dipl.-Ing. Thorsten Ragge

Refinements for articulated trucks Design refinements for new Cat® articulated trucks address operator safety and convenience, enhanced control, and powertrain advances John Melegatti

T

hree new Cat® articulated trucks – 730, 730 EJ (Ejector), and 735 – have been extensively redesigned, enhancing the field-proven features and performance of their C-Series predecessors (730C2, 730C2 EJ, and 735C) with new operator stations-including innovative new controls, transmission-protection features, new hoist-assist system, advanced traction control system, new stability-assist system, and a fuel saving ECO operating mode. In addition, the design of the 730 and 730 EJ is enhanced by automatic retarder control and a hill-start feature. The 735 retains these features from its C-Series predecessor and further incorporates significant design refinements that in-

10  MT > n. 4 - May 2018

clude a new Cat® C13 ACERT™ engine, Cat CX31 transmission (also on the 730 and 730 EJ) and structural and dimensional modifications that reduce empty weight by 22 percent, while retaining the productivity of the outgoing 735C. These features combine for an up to 19-percent gain in fuel efficiency.

Operator station The cab’s new external “spinal-ROPS” design incorporates a rear-quarter glass that eliminates a structural pillar in the C-Series design, for enhanced rear visibility. Also, a new “wake-up” feature initiates the machine’s displays when the door is opened. The door is of a lighter, stronger design with a shut-assist feature for improved sealing against dust

infiltration. The overall cab design results in lower inside sound levels at 72 dB(A), a 7 dB(A) reduction compared to previous models. Optional new infrared glass reduces solar heating inside the cab, and left- and right-hand sliding windows increase ventilation and facilitate communication with workers and the loading-vehicle operator. A new, automatic climatecontrol (HVAC) system positions more vents above and behind the operator for increased heating and cooling efficiency. A new heated/cooled seat is designed to give operators increased adjustments that allow “dialing in” personal-comfort settings; also, the passenger seat now uses a flip up/down design and added cushioning. For added safety, a new lighting system, controlled via a ground-level switch, illuminates the cab’s entry steps and hitch area. Optional integrated payload lights provide an external indication of payload levels for the loader operator. Optional long range, LED work lights improve visibility at night or in situations of lower visibility. New cabmounted mirrors, including a front-vis-

www. scimag.news

ibility mirror, enhance all-around visibility for the operator. Exterior cab features include an improved flexible lower fender and a low-profile exhaust stack that need not be removed for transport. The optional Cat Connect PAYLOAD technology calculates payload via sensors on the walking-beam suspension, and load-status lights at all four corners of the cab roof ensure visibility to the loader operator from any angle. In addition, the standard Cat Detect/Stability-Assist system monitors the working angle of the tractor and body, as well as the grade, and cautions the operator if the machine is approaching the set threshold angle, stopping the dump process if continued action may result in potential tipping. Further enhancing safe operation is the Cat Advanced Automatic Traction Control system, which features refined technology for proactively applying differential locks to avoid wheel spin. Also, a “terrain-based,” throttle-smoothing system prevents acceleration surges when traveling over extremely rough terrain that makes keeping a steady pressure on the throttle pedal difficult.

brake, shifting the transmission to neutral, and raising the body to maximum angle at engine high idle. Assisted hoisting returns the body to the lower position at the flick of a switch. Both raise and lower functions feature automatic cushioning and speed reduction at limits of movements. New buttons in the combined transmission and hoist lever allows setting (limiting) machine speed and selecting the transmission waiting brake. In addition, a new shift-protection system brings the truck to a safe stop if a directional shift is made while the truck is moving. The new combined shifting/ hoisting lever also incorporates a parking position. A tertiary brake switch sets the parking brake in the unlikely event of main and secondary braking malfunction.

Model specifics The new 735 replaces the Cat C15 ACERT engine, rated at 441 net horsepower, with the Cat C13 ACERT, rated at 428 net horsepower. The new 730 and 730 EJ continue to use the Cat C13 ACERT engine, rated at 367 net horsepower. The C13 engine used in all the new trucks is available in configurations to meet emissions standards of both highly-regulated and lesser-regulated countries. The 730 EJ is designed to eject loads while traveling, providing positive dumping of the entire load, and also to work in areas with overhead restrictions and with soft underfoot conditions with improved machine stability.◀

Cat 735

Innovative controls A new combined transmission-andhoist lever provides efficient, single-lever control of vehicle speed and bodyhoisting functions to reduce operator effort and to automate repetitive operations. A switch in the cab allows operators to choose either manual or assisted hoisting control, the latter selection automatically applying the waiting
