LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Schonesland is having a great year in case you had not noticed. The enthusiasm at the board level is palpable. New rides are being created. New members continue to join. Attendance at events is at an all time high.

With that in mind, I want the Spinner to improve and grow just as our club is growing. Based on other publications from other regions our Spinner is missing two things. First, technical articles. If you have your hood up and a wrench out, we would like to hear about it. If you have modified your ride and had a good experience, let us know. I find Porsche people are always curious about technical issues. But, many/most simply lack the knowledge. Second, lets get to know each other better. Our summer is providing the perfect background for you to take a photo of your car and share it with the club. Other regional magazines are filled with photos of members Porsches. Ours is not. So, get out there and take that photo. Submit articles or photos to: shiffler@shiffler.com

Respectfully submitted, D. Bryan Shiffler

APEX

It has been great to see so many members this past month at all of our various events!!

We had almost 40 Porsches at Thursday Nights in Pella!! Amazing! The weather was perfect to wander and look at all of the cars like most of Pella did. I hear we have already been asked to come back next year!

The Wisconsin Drive organized by Skip Hammerman and Garry Seemann was again wonderful. And this time it didn’t snow! The roads were great and the company was even better.

Our Drive and Dine at District 36 had 53 in attendance. Might be a new record! On August 15th it is at Kinship Brewery in Waukee. Can we beat our new record?!

The new member picnic at Bob Timmerman and Linda Laine’s house was a hit. (Thanks Bob and Linda!) We had 47 members attend with a good share of that being new members. Hope to see all of the new members at another event soon!!

NAME BADGE UPDATE!! For those of you that want or need Schonesland name badges you can order them from the club website!! These badges will look like what you see some of the club members already wearing. They will not have an overlay of the name. The name will be directly printed on the badge. The link for ordering can be accessed from two places under the Resources tab at the top of www.schonesland.com. You can go to Club Merchandise https://schonesland.com/club-merchandise/ or Links and Documents https://schonesland.com/links-and-documents/. You will then be routed to https://www.kahlerspec.com/si/506426220/100/schonesland-regioncustom-name-tag

From here you select the quantity and specify the name for each badge. Remember to click “Add to your cart” after putting in each quantity and name. This will get you to the Cart Summary page where you can review the quantity and names before finalizing your purchase. If you click Continue Shopping after looking at your cart you will get routed to the Schonesland merchandise page where you can buy other Schonesland branded items. Happy shopping!

THURSDAY IN PELLA RECAP

Thursday Nights in Pella proved for the second year in a row that Schoneslanders enjoy a good ride to a welcoming town with perfect weather. 37 cars made the trip for Pella’s weekly celebration of summer.

WISCONSIN TOUR RECAP

As Lao Tzu famously said: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.” So too do driving tours. Our first step is always the drivers meeting as Social Media Chair Skip Hammerman, above, is expertly demonstrating. It was an almost perfect day for a drive. Our band of over 20 cars caravanned through Iowa dodging rain showers, pot holes and construction zones.

WISCONSIN TOUR RECAP

Choosing restaurants for lunch on driving tours is an art form. Finding the right place on the right road at the right time is not for the frail of heart. On our way to Prairie du Chien we stopped at the Landmark Bistro in Grundy Center. Left, from left to right: Bruce Nuzum, Nehru Cheddie, Karisa Cheddie and Tracie Hammerman.

The Hotel Julien was the perfect launch pad for the tour. Above, Social Chair Belinda and Ben Nordman look ready for the days drive. Sight seeing included Poopy’s Bar (believe me, it was a sight to see), and the lock and dam at Bellevue. Below, our final dinner at Timmerman’s overlooking the Mississippi.

UPCOMING DRIVES

MA Hill Charity Drive

This is our inaugural MA Hill Charity Drive to honor Mary Alice Hill and everything she did for Schonesland. It’s a one day drive on September 16th.

Mary Alice was the first female president of Schonesland. Everyone loved Mary Alice! She was always smiling, laughing or singing! And, MA was always wiling to listen or talk to you about whatever. She will definitely be missed.

This charity drive will be a poker run format. It is a predetermined route with various stops. At each stop you will get a playing card. You then use your cards to make the best (or worst) poker hand. The route you can take at your own pace. So if you want to stop for coffee, stop. If you want to swap drivers, swap. You can go as fast or as slow as you want. There are no prizes for who ever gets to the end first! The only prizes will be for your poker hand!

Each hand will be $25. Each person in attendance that purchases a hand will also receive a souvenir glass per hand commemorating the event.

All proceeds will be donated to Mary Alice’s favorite charity, Big Sisters.

If you are unable to attend or would like to donate more without having to purchase more hands, Schonesland has a Venmo account.

@SchoneslandPorscheClub or you can search under Business on Venmo. Be sure to put MA Hill in the comments section so we know what money needs to go to Big Sisters.

Registration is open on Motorsportreg at msreg.com/mahillcharitydrive2023.

UPCOMING DRIVES

Red Wing Tour

Schonesland’s second visit to Red Wing, Minnesota is on September 28th to October 1st, but the remaining 13 rooms at the historic St. James Hotel will only be available until AUGUST 28th, just four weeks from now. This is a very popular area for fall touring and hotel rooms are virtually impossible to get at the last minute.

All the plans are set and you can view all the details by clicking on the link: http://msreg.com/2023redwing

Friday’s scenic fall colors drive in Wisconsin will be a spectacular day with lunch in Eau Claire and dinner at the Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, MN, just 13 miles south of Red Wing.

Saturday presents many options. As mentioned, a number of us will be making an early morning drive to Chanhassen, MN for the Octoberfest Cars and Cofee where we’ve been invited to show our cars with the other German exotics that will be on display among the many extravagant garages and man caves. After that, there’s Paisley Park, (4 blocks away) and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in nearby Chaska. Of course, there are many other places of interest in the Twin Cities to enjoy.

For those who want to sleep in and relax in Red Wing, the day is yours to enjoy until we all meet up for dinner at the SMOKIN’ OAK BBQ house in Red Wing on Saturday evening.

UPCOMING DRIVES

Saturday Red Wing options could be:

. More driving in Wisconsin

. Driving to Winona for lunch and a visit to the Winona Maritime Art Museum. We saw it last year- very worthwhile.

. Exploring Red Wing’s shops, galleries, museums and neighborhoods

For more info, visit www.red-wing.org

More details will be forthcoming in the next 30 days.
