The Zone 10 President’s meeting was held earlier in March. It was great to meet leaders from other regions and hear about what other regions are doing and what is happening nationally. There is a new Zone 10 website that is linked from our website. This is a great place to reference if you will be visiting another region and want to see if there are any PCA events happening while you are visiting.
Hope to see you at the Mad Warren Drive!

Who could have guessed that the March Cars & Coffee would be gifted with spring like weather and a summer like turnout. Once again we produced a room full of Schoneslanders. (Looks like we are going to need a bigger restaurant.)
The objective of a PCA Rally is to follow a course from point to point, usually on public roads, to the precise detail specifed in the rules - it can be competitive or for fun. Competitive Time Speed Distance (TSD) Rallies dictate a certain time schedule for the checkpoints along the way. Gimmick Rallies, also competitive rallies, may include a Gimmick (Poker Rally, regional interest). New to Rallying? Parade is a great time to give it a try!

I started coming out to Arizona back in the early 80’s. I had three good golf buddies and just the second we had enough disposable cash and permission from wives for a completely frivolous trip we started flying out for February golf. That morphed decades later into putting money down in the Scottsdale real estate market. At first, I would try to spend a week a month out in the dessert during the winter. Fast forward to today where I hunker down out here until the forecast in Des Moines shows that frostbite is unlikely.
The benefits out here are hiking, biking and golfing in a much more benign winter environment. In the beginning, I really had no idea that there was such a car culture out here. But, it’s hard to ignore when you pull up to a valet kiosk in front of a restaurant and all you see is a line up of Ferraris and Lamborghinis. The more car events you attend the more events you learn about.
Well… this year I learned about the All Porsche Grand Display put on every year in Carefree Arizona by the Arizona Region of the Porsche Club of America. It’s the first weekend every March. Old Porsches really love it out in the dessert. No rain. No snow. No salt. No POTHOLES. Ever notice at Barrett Jackson auctions the moment a car is from Arizona the auctioneer will bark: “Folks, it’s an Arizona car”! So, when the Arizona Chapter wants to put on a Porsche display you can guess they get the best of the best.
As you read this I will be traveling back to Iowa. The lure of Mad/Warren, Loess Hills, C&C’s and the D&D’s have me missing Schonesland and the Iowa Porsche culture. Yes, the Arizona Chapter has 2,000 members and some pretty fabulous rides. But, the AZ Chapter exists primarily on Saturday morning Cars & Coffees and an occasional driving tour. Schonesland has a social aspect that is totally lacking out here. I continue to be amazed at how many friends Dorothy and I have developed from participating in Schonesland events. So, when the cars line up for departure in our annual effort to terrorize Madison County wildlife, expect to see a GT Silver 911 with me in it.

Interested in taking your prized Porsche out on the track? A competition Seminar will be held on April 13th immediately following the Cars & Coffee breakfast gathering at Cozy Cafe. The seminar will be held in the large private back room of the restaurant and should last no longer than two hours depending on the number of questions and discussion items. This seminar will have several handouts and poster board diagrams for explanations while in discussions. The seminar will cover three main areas of competition and include details of the different types of driving the competitions demand. At the conclusion of each area we will have two Schonesland members give their perspective on what to expect and why it can be fun to partake.
A) The first area will be on "Auto-crossing or Solo" events that are held on a LARGE parking lot with a course laid out using rubber pylons. The pylons outline the course where each car navigates driving against a timed run from start to finish. This type of event is one car at a time on course. We will cover the complete description of how the event works, what you should expect to get from this experience and what the cost would be to enter.
B) The second area will be on "On Track Experience" events that are actually run on a fully enclosed race track. This event will cover the full experience of driving correctly on a track and will include “in car” instruction. This type of event will include other cars on track with you at the same time. We will cover the full requirements of participating, what you should expect to get out of the on track experience and what the cost would be to enter.
C) The last group will be a step up in your experience level as you gain track time and will cover "On Track Time Trials”. This comes after some practice as you are now driving at a faster and more aggressive pace on a closed race track. You are in competition against yourself as you attempt to drive faster and faster lap times.
Again after each area group we will have two members talk about their experiences in their particular levels of competition. The floor will then be open for questions.
