APEX Happy New Year 2024 !! We had a great holiday party on December 9th at Noce in downtown Des Moines. 101 people registered for the event which is the most ever! Melissa Bremer and Belinda Nordman did an amazing job organizing the event. Everyone had an awesome time, and we will probably be returning there in the future! For those that missed the holiday party I shared some of our numbers for the year. We had 36 new members this year for a total of 330 members! This does not include our 19 junior members. If we include those we are one shy of 350. Amazing! Over 400 people and 225 cars went on our 9 drives in 2023. Remember to thank your tour leaders next time you attend a drive. We could not do what we do as a club without them! Thanks to Je David, Skip Hammerman, Garry Seemann, Cam Torstenson, Bill Frank, Roy Johnson, John Peeler, Herman Riva, and Daryl Metzger for leading the drives this past year. For Drive and Dines we had record numbers all year! Thank you to Belinda Nordman and Shashi Perera for nding places that will accept our large group! Special thank you to Ben Nordman and Skip Hammerman for testing out Ride with GPS and getting rolled out to the club for our drives. It is a great enhancement to our drives! Thank you to Erik Johnson for revamping our website. It is so much better than it was. Erik has lots of ideas planned for it to be even better!

RECAP

On Saturday morning, December 9, just before the annual Holiday Party the category on Jeopardy was: Porsche. Answer was: Schoneslanders that show up on a cold day the morning before a big party. The question was “Who are the hard core?”

HOLIDAY PARTY

NOCE RECAP

What a year it was. Record membership, eleven well attended Drive & Dines, some of the best attended Cars & Co ee ever and record attendance at driving tours. On December 9th the year was topped o by ONE HUNDRED Schoneslanders attending our annual Holiday Party at NOCE. It was tting that a year with such membership growth and increased participation would be ended with record attendance. Optimism about 2024 is palpable. With a fantastic year under our belt and construction starting soon for the Des Moines Porsche dealership we are going to need a bigger venue for our 2024 Holiday Party.

MEET THE MEMBER

GUY COOK

Most of our readers probably know Schonesland member Guy Cook. Over his 4 decade career successfully defending clients his name has appeared in newspapers, on TV news shows and, yes, advertising at Principal Park. So, it’s time to get to know Guy better. He is a car enthusiast who drives his dream on a daily basis. Editor: In 200 words or less, tell us about yourself. Cook: I’m a 67 year old married father of two. Born and reared in Des Moines. Graduate of Drake University Law School and University of Iowa. Practicing trial lawyer for forty plus years, including ve years as a federal prosecutor. Past present of the Iowa State Bar Association. Resident of Des Moines and Tucson. Editor: What was your rst car? Cook: 1967 British Racing Green MG Midget, which I still own. When I bought the car I thought I was the “cock of the walk” but now when drive it I feel like a Shriner. Editor: Were you always a car guy?

fi

fi

Cook: Admittedly yes. My father was a car guy and my stepfather bought a new Cadillac each year. A strong interest in cars was passed on to me.

MEET THE MEMBER

Editor: When did you rst get introduced to Porsches? Cook: As as early teenager, I saw in person my rst 911 Targa and was bit. Editor: Tell us a funny story about you and your Porsche?

fi

fi

Cook: My nephew, who was obsessed with Porsches as a very young boy, was once sitting in the driver’s seat of one of 911’s, pretending to drive and shift the gears, when he accidentally engaged the clutch and the car rolled out of the garage and down the driveway to his immense surprise.

GUY COOK

MEET THE MEMBER

GUY COOK

Editor: Today, what is in your garage? Cook: Mostly German. Five Porsches, 911SC Targa, 993 Coupe, 996 C4 Cabriolet, 997 Turbo Coupe, Platinum Cayenne SUV, Mercedes 500 SEL, BMW SUV, BMW Cabriolet, Range Rover HSE, Range Rover Classic and my MG Midget. Editor: If you had a dream Porsche, what would it be? Cook: Early 1960’s silver 356. Editor: What is your favorite part of the Schonesland Club?

ff

Cook: Genuinely passionate Porsche enthusiasts sharing a ection for these special cars.

MEET MY RIDE

JEFF DAVID

My ride is a 2015 991.1 C4 GTS, Carrera White Metallic over Espresso full leather/carbon interior, 7-spd manual, painted white sunroof and noncenterlock wheels. ModI cations include: 7 spd manual upgraded to Numeric Racing Shifter & cables, Rennline steel mesh protective grille inserts and PPF from Protective Solutions.

fi

Having only experienced 911 turbos, I was curious to have a normally-aspirated 911 in some GT fashion. After ruling out a GT3, the GTS became the target. In November 2019, while getting my 997 turbo serviced in Omaha, I happened to see this low-mileage car on the lot. After learning who the original owner was, I knew that this car was very well-cared for. After an extensive test drive and a chat with the original owner, and appreciating how this GTS was so unusually-appointed, I traded cars.
