Do you know what PCA Zone the Schonesland Club is in? We are in Zone 10 which covers Manitoba, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, part of Illinois, and Iowa. Did you know that we have a zone representative? Stan Thorne, of the Kansas City region, has been our zone representative. (Thanks, Stan, for your leadership!) Starting in 2024, we have a new zone representative, Steve Kemp of the Nord Stern region. Steve is past president of the Nord Stern region and is involved in sim racing as well as competition events in his region. We have already discussed regions sharing their calendars/events better to help members of all regions. For example, Schonesland does not organize any competition events, but Kansas City, Great Plains (Omaha), and Nord Stern (Minneapolis) do. If we can direct Schonesland members to PCA sponsored competition events by having them cross listed on our Schonesland calendar that would help our members interested in competition ful ll their wants and needs. We have already had members from other regions join our driving tours. The advantage to all of us is getting to know more PCA members! Steve is hoping to join us for an event in 2024.

You are probably aware, we had a little 928 issue during our Arkansas trip, so I thought that this problem would make a great tech article. Most people know that our cars require a very precise mixture of gas and air to operate smoothly and a reasonable mix for them to operate at all. While there are many (far too many) possible reasons for a car to suddenly run poorly, I have found that vacuum leaks which let in too much air, relative to the computerdriven fuel rate, are very often the cause. Additionally, vacuum leaks are one of the few things you can x on the road without a lot of tools and spare parts. (i.e. when on a trip with a car issue, focus rst on those things you can actually x on the road…

All internal combustion engines (ICE) have the greatest amount of vacuum (suction) when at idle and not under load. As such, a rough running engine at idle which drives smoother under load or at higher RPM’s is a great indicator of a vacuum leak. This is because the percentage of air coming into the intake from the leak becomes lower relative to the total amount of air coming into the engine under open throttle (acceleration or cruise). acceleration. Small vacuum leaks will also cause a slight miss or roughness at idle, but may not a ect any acceleration or cruise performance.

That Giant Sucking Sound
That Giant Sucking Sound Cont. Vacuum leaks in large hoses and connections can often create no-start situations or start-then-die problems. Mid-sized vacuum leaks will cause the engine to run very rough at idle and then seem to have very low power under acceleration. Small vacuum leaks will also cause a slight miss or roughness at idle, but may not a ect any acceleration or cruise performance.

Large and medium sized vacuum leaks will make the most noise at idle. These leaks will often make a large sucking sound with possibly a bit of a whistle that is more pronounced at idle. I nd the easiest way to locate these leaks is to get a 3 foot long small rubber vacuum hose and put one end in my ear and move the other end around the engine intake areas and along every large hose and large hose connection to hear the telltale hiss. Small vacuum leaks are often the most di cult to nd and require a visual (or sometimes audible) check of every small vacuum hose condition and connection. Unlike the large hose leaks, most small hoses will not make enough noise to hear unless you are right on top of them with your homemade stethoscope.
That Giant Sucking Sound Cont. Another common approach to nding these leaks is to spray SMALL (note the caps) bursts of starter uid, propane, carb cleaner or even brake cleaner near areas where you suspect the leak to be. These products will add fuel to your air leak and cause the engine to run smoothly for a few seconds which helps you pinpoint a leaking hose or connection. BE CAREFUL with this approach and have a re extinguisher handy (I always carry two). Also, never spray near an exhaust manifold, or turbocharger.

That Giant Sucking Sound Cont. The best approach to use If you are at a workshop, is to use a smoke machine which will inject smoke into the engine intake and see if you can spot smoke leaking out of a gasket, hose or connection. This is a very safe and e ective way to nd large, mid-sized and even some small vacuum leaks. Unfortunately, none of us car guys carry our smoke machines around with us on long trips as they are large and often require an electric outlet.
Typical automotive smoke machine.
Now back to our 928 issue in Arkansas. We noticed that the engine had an intermittent idle quality problem that acted like a switch (instantly ran smooth, then rough and then smooth again). We also noticed that the performance of the car under load was poor and there was a noticeable delay in response under acceleration.

Finally, we could hear a large sucking sound but were unable to pinpoint it to a speci c source. After a careful review of all large (and a few small ones) we started to suspect the idle air valve. This valve is designed to add extra air into the intake (bypassing the air ow meter) which the engine will o set by adding extra fuel. If this valve sticks open then it will basically operate as if there was a big vacuum leak.
That Giant Sucking Sound Cont. We tested our theory by pinching the large vacuum hose from this valve to the intake and the car immediately ran smoother and our power was back. Not having this valve, just meant that the car will not be able to idle as good, but that was a compromise worth taking since we didn’t plan to drive slowly anyway. Of course, pinching o this hose is very di cult based on the fact that it is located under the intake. As such, we resorted to having to disconnect the hose entirely and plug both ends using a few plugs purchased at the neighborhood O-Reilly’s.
