APEX I know some of you are very interested in getting more involved in racing and competition events. Bob Eddy is planning a “Everything You Need to Know About Autocross, DE, and Track Events” talk following Cars & Co ee on April 13th. He will have speakers and more information than you will probably ever need! However, since we do not have a great track nearby (nor the experience and funds!) I reached out to the nearby regions that do have track events. The nearby regions are more than happy to welcome us! The Kansas City PCA website has their competition events broken down by type. Their Autocross events can be found at https://kcrpca.org/autocross/. And their Driver’s Education events can be found at https://kcrpca.org/driver-education/. The Nord Stern PCA event website, https://website.nordstern.org/calendar/, has a dropdown under Events where you can choose Track and get several options, First Timers, Driver Training, and Driver Education. Each category has information on what to expect, requirements, and registration. They will have three track events at Brainerd and one at Road America. Registration will be opening soon. I received the following message from Nord Stern president Tom Karn. “We look forward to having Schonesland members join us! Nord Stern is fortunate to have two great tracks at our disposal. Our instructors are fantastic for those in your group that are new to the track. The DE & DT guys, and our registrars are super helpful to gure out how your members can get plugged in to our event—meaning whether they’ll need to do the DT, or which run group they’ll be in for DE, etc. John Blackburn runs our DE (de@nordstern.org), Ben Rogers and Scott Brown run our DT with Matt Smith and Tylar Twite (dt@nordstern.org), Dave Anderson and Andy Barker are our registrars (registrar@nordstern.org). Please let me know what questions I can answer or how I can help more. Your members can also email me directly at president@nordstern.org.”

BARRETT JACKSON 2024

Yup, this is what you get when the editor of your favorite magazine heads to Arizona for the winter. You get a report on the car culture in the land where potholes, salt and brine simply don’t exist. The year around sun attracts cars, car enthusiasts and car auctions. This year I was assisted by our very own Jim Baker who’s friendship and love for cars I enjoy. The 2024 Barrett Jackson had over 1,900 lots and over 300,000 attendees. Both were new records. In fact, Barrett Jackson Scottsdale has grown so large that in 2024 they will add an additional auction mid-October. Sure, BJ had a Carrera GT and a 918. But, the event was once again dominated by Corvettes, Cameros, Mustangs and restomod pick-up trucks. There were just 30 Porsches driven across the stage. The following are just a few of my favorites.

fi

2005 Porsche GT. 3,526 actual miles. One of 44 for 2005 nished in Fayence Yellow for the U.S. market. Powered by a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V10 engine with 603hp and 435 ft/lbs of torque; redlines at 8,400 rpm. Sold for $1,870,000.

BARRETT JACKSON 2024 CON’T 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder. Finished in rare paint-to-sample Acid Green. Powered by a 4.6-liter V8 hybrid powertrain producing 887hp with 900 ft/lbs of torque. Loaded with options and tted with Weissach lightweight trim. Just over 1,573 actual miles. Sold for $1,787,000. 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0liter at 6-cylinder engine derived from the Porsche GT3 that has a 9,000-rpm redline and produces 502hp with 346 ft/lbs of torque, sending the car from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 192 mph. Sold for $550,000. 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring. Equipped with a manual transmission, full GMG exhaust, PPF on the front, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), bucket seats and a front axle lift. Had a $225,000 MSRP. 1,785 actual miles. Yes, Jen Schar , it’s nished in Chalk paint. Sold for $330,000.

1955 Porsche 356 Speedster. Powered by a matching-numbers powertrain, including a 1500cc engine built to 1600cc with the original 4-speed manual transmission and two dual-venturi Zenith carburetors. Finished in white with a red interior. Sold for $264,000.

BARRETT JACKSON 2024 CON’T 1969 Porsche 912 Finished in Burgundy over a black interior. Powered by its matching-numbers 1.6-litre at-4 engine with Dellorto carburetors, paired to a 5-speed manual transaxle. Engine rebuilt by a Porsche Classic dealer for $67,000. Sold for $82,500. 1972 Porsche Targa Powered by a 2.4-liter at-6 engine that produces 190hp through a 5-speed manual transmission. Finished in a deep black exterior over a Camel interior and has 15-inch Fuchs wheels. Had a complete re nish in Glasurit European Black. Sold for $110,000. 1974 Porsche 911 All-original and unrestored. Powered by its matching-numbers 2.7-liter engine rated at 150hp and a 6-speed manual transmission. Presented in Burnt Orange with a red interior featuring an 8-track tape player. Sold for $70,400.

2006 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet Finished in Guards Red over a tan leather interior with a black convertible top. Powered by a 325hp 3.6-liter at-6 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. Has 19-inch custom wheels wrapped in Michelin tires. Sold for $37,950.

BARRETT JACKSON 2024 CON’T 2019 Porsche GT2 RS. There were two GT2 RS’s at Barrett Jackson this year. One track prepared and one street version. The tracked Porsche was previously owned by Indy champion Paul Tracy. Notable options include the Weissach Package, front axle lift system. Out tted with a full roll cage, Vivid tune, Kats exhaust, and laserjamming radar front and rear. Sold for $412,500.

Not all Porsches at Barrett Jackson sold in the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. This 1988 Porsche 928 S4 is the perfect example. Powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. Has poweradjustable leather sport seats and an electric sunroof. Finished in black on black. Hammer price was $37,400.

fi

2024 Porsche Golf Cart My favorite lot. Finished in traditional Gulf racing colors. Rear wheel drive with a single cylinder 286 CC engine producing a teeth shattering 10 HP with a maximum speed of 15 MPH. Street legal with an asking price of $50,000. (Okay I’m a golfer. But, let the record show Dave Sly, this sells for more than a 928!)

Barrett Jackson is not the only game in town. Bonhams is a small, re ned auction held the Thursday of Car Week at the Westin Kierland. Small tent. Auctioneer you can understand. Unlimited Champagne (for $25.00 per ute.) Their auction was highlighted by selling a 2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ Coupe for over $5,000,000. 1964 Porsche 356C 1600 Cabriolet coachwork by Reutter. Features: 1,582cc OHV Flat 4-Cylinder Engine, Solex Carburetors, 95bhp at 5,800rpm, 4-Speed Manual Transaxle, 4-Wheel Independent Suspension and 4-Wheel Disc Brakes. Sold for $167,920. 1961 Porsche 356B T5 1600 Roadster coachwork by Drauz. Features: 1,582cc OHV Flat 4-Cylinder Engine, Zenith Carburetors, 75bhp at 5,500rpm, 4-Speed Manual Transaxle, 4-Wheel Independent Suspension, 4Wheel Disc Brakes. Sold for $165,760. fi

BONHAMS 2024

RM SOTHEBY’S 2024 Maybe my favorite car auction is RM Sotheby’s on the grounds of the Builtmore Estates. Open for public viewing as the cars line up to cross the stage. It seems like Sotheby’s always has the best Porsches for sale. It was the nal stop for Jim Baker and me. And… quite frankly I’m already looking forward to Car Week 2025. It’s my favorite week out here in the valley of the sun. 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort. I have to begin with Porsche’s engineering marvel developed for the World Rally Championship Group B class homologation. The 121st of only 207 standardproduction Komfort examples built. Bene ts from nearly $60,000 of mechanical servicing and cosmetic detailing completed since May 2023, including upgrade to Canepa’s 959 SC coilover suspension system. Not sold for the reserve price of $1,750,000.

WESTERN SKIES TOUR

Schonesland Porsche Club 2024 Great Western Skies Tour I had never been to the Badlands of South Dakota and had always wanted to drive there to see the wonderful scenery and experience the roads that I had learned about at some point. In the spring of 2016, I started to plan a trip on “MyScenicDrives” trip planning website which looking back was quite primitive and hard to navigate through to construct daily routes for the drive especially comparing it to the Ride With GPS software that we use now. And obviously there was no voice navigation with it, so it was just a route mapping platform. As I started working on the drive I started thinking “well – if we are that far from Des Moines, we might as well go to...”. I initially thought that we might make it to Yellowstone, but only having about a week for the trip, it just was too far. I ended up mapping a nice route with several great sightseeing destinations and of course incredible roads to enjoy. Tracy and I took about a week to drive the route with the BMW Z8, and the weather was fantastic with us having the top down literally 99% of the 2,200-mile trip. Only a small portion of the trip was on the Interstate as my objective was to stay on the backroads.

WESTERN SKIES TOUR

CONT

The last few years as I have been active in planning Schonesland Porsche Club tours for the members to enjoy, I have thought how great it would be to have a similar drive with a group of Porsches and their great club member owners. I had mentioned it over the past few years every so often to some of the club members as an idea, but it just remained as something that was fun to talk about but not likely to become reality. As the club has grown and our drives are being attended by more and more people, I thought last fall that the time might be ripe to nd a few members to actually do the trip. I sat down and retraced (mostly) the 2016 drive on Ride with GPS and even did some preliminary planning for hotels, restaurants, and pit stops ensuring that we would hit most of the main attractions on the way. In December at the annual planning meeting it was approved for an o cial Schonesland Tour for 2024 and is on the calendar for 6/21-29.

fi

fi

ffi

While I have not yet 100% nalized all the routes and details, the preliminary routes are on Ride with GPS and can be best reviewed on a desk top computer on their web site at https://ridewithgps.com/ organizations/10558-schonesland-regionof-the-pca if you would like to take a peek at how everything looks. One of the main objectives of the road plan was to minimize Interstate travel and to stay on highways enjoying the countryside views. The trip is eight nights and nine driving days and covers 2.400 miles!

WESTERN SKIES TOUR

CONT

The plan is to depart on Friday morning tracing some of the Loess Hills Drive roads ending in Mitchell, SD for the night. The second day will take us through the Badlands to Rapid City, SD with an obligatory stop at the Wall Drug (after passing about 100 roadside advertisements for it). On Sunday we will cruise the incredible Black Hills National Forest roads and visit Mount Rushmore before returning back to Rapid city for another night. Monday will have an Encounter of the Porsche Kind at the Devils Tower. Maybe we will even see Richard Dreyfuss there – or maybe not. From there we will continue to Sheridan, WY for the night. Tuesday morning, we will take the drive through Big Horn National forest on the Northern route to new heights on the Beartooth Pass at almost 11,000 feet from where we will descend through the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway to Wyoming and drive to Cody, WY for the night. Wednesday will take us to Gillette, WY through the Bighorn National Forest utilizing the Southern route. On Thursday morning, we will head to Hot Springs, SD where some of us might take the time to take a plunge and soak in the hot waters bubbling from the earth and some may visit the World Fossil Finder Museum. Friday we will start heading towards home and will drive to Norfolk, NE where we will have one more evening together before heading back to Des Moines on Saturday. Please let me know if you are interested in joining us on this epic multi day drive, or if you have any questions about it. Feel free to e-mail me at skiphammerman@msn.com or call me at 515-419-8734. I hope that there will be good interest in the tour which will be limited to no more than ten cars.
