In a world where love stories often unfold rapidly, Nathan and Aubrie‘s tale is a testament to the power of friendship blossoming into romance. Their journey began in 2012 at a house party hosted by a mutual friend, sparking a connection that would span a decade before transforming into love.

Aubrie, a talented Stainglass artist who lives in Pensacola, Florida recalls feeling an instant connection. “ I knew right away that Nathan would play an important role in my life,” she shares. For 10 years, they remained close friends, their bond strengthening as their social circle intertwined.

It wasn’t until 2021 that their relationship evolved into something more. After two years of dating, Nathan ever the romantic planned an intimate proposal. On March 3, 2023 he orchestrated a date night at their favorite restaurant, George’s Bistro.

After a delightful meal, Nathan insisted on stopping by their home. It was there that Nathan surprised Aubrie by getting down on one knee and asking her to be his wife. This moment is one they will always treasure, as their dreams of life and love together, would be coming true.

The couple wasted no time in planning their dream wedding, set for exactly 364 days after their engagement. They chose “The Sanctuary”, a new stunning,

beautiful venue — a decision that would make them the first couple to wed at this location.

With the help of their wedding planner, Maddie Vo from Southern Frills, Nathan and Aubrie brought their vision of a “ luxe tropical” theme to life. The color, palette of green, gold, peach, pink and Ivory created a lush, exotic atmosphere that perfectly complemented the Florida setting.

On March 2, 2024, surrounded by 225 of their closest friends and family, Nathan and Aubrie said, “I do!” The ceremony was officiated by the same friend who had introduced them years ago, adding a deeply personal touch to the proceedings. Both bride and groom wrote their own vowels, a moment that guests described as beautiful and heartfelt.

Aubrie was a vision in her Martina Liana gown from The Bridal Boutique in Dallas, Texas. As Nathan and Aubrie shared “ their first look” their emotions and love shone through, as these moments were captured by the talented Aislinn Kate Photographer. The bridal party, consisting of 6 bridesmaids and five groomsmen, were

carefully chosen to represent the most important people that have touched the couple’s lives throughout the years.

After witnessing The Mertin’s becoming man and wife, the guests enjoyed a cocktail hour on the lawn, complete with champagne, oysters, paella and the soulful piano styles of John Ripley. Meanwhile, the indoor space underwent a magical transformation, showcasing the talents of Fiore, Classic City Catering and Betty Weber Cakes, a feat that left the newlyweds and their guests in awe.

The reception was a celebration to remember with the nine piece band, The Bay Kings, who kept the guest dancing all night long. A highlight of the evening was the couple’s first dance to Elvis Presley‘s, “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” a

moment that encapsulated their journey from friends to soulmates.

Throughout the planning process, both Nathan and Aubrie were deeply involved, making decisions together and supporting each other every step of the way. “I couldn’t have done it without him or our wedding planner,” Aubrie says, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in their relationship.

The day was filled with meaningful touches, including special Momentos that honored loved ones who couldn’t be there. Aubrie wore a beautiful bracelet from Bere’s with The Blue Eye, (remembering her sister Ashley); a symbol of divine protection. Added to the bracelet were Ashley and Aubrie’s rings that their dad gave to them, when their parents wed. Aubrie also carried a

rosary made from her late sister’s flowers, as “something blue”. In addition, Aubrie‘s parents gifted the couple matching gold watches from their own wedding day.

As they reflect on their wedding day, both Nathan and Aubrie agree that their favorite part was simply marrying their best friend and sharing that moment with their loved ones. Their advice to other couples planning their weddings is to stay focused on the most important aspects of your wedding — begin your life together with your partner.

From a chance meeting at a house party to a fairytale wedding, Nathan and Aubrie's story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the best love stories are the ones that take their time to unfold. As they embark on this new chapter together, their foundation of friendship, promises, a lifetime of love, laughter, and happily ever after.

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them. In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

These fearless women are that and more.

All the way from Denmark to the vibrant coast of Pensacola, Rachael Gillette’s life story is as dynamic and inspiring as the sailboats she loves to captain. This accomplished businesswoman, community leader, and passionate mentor has navigated a path through life that is both impressive and heartwarming.

Born in Denmark and raised in Liverpool, England, Rachael’s journey took an unexpected turn when a Caribbean sailing regatta led her to meet the man who would become her now husband of 22 years. Taking a leap of faith, she left behind a thriving career as a Barrister-atLaw in England to build a new life in Pensacola, Florida — a place she had never even heard of before!

“I am a risk-taker,” Rachael admits, “and while some of them have not paid off, the decision to follow my heart was the right one.” This adventurous spirit has served her well in her adopted home, where she has become a pillar of the community since 2002.

As the Founder and CEO of VMG Solutions, a Business Consulting and Executive Leadership Coaching company, Rachael helps organizations and individuals chart their fastest course to success. The company’s name, VMG, is a sailing term that perfectly encapsulates her mission. “Just as a skilled sailor navigates the seas, our team facilitates retreats, conferences, and workshops that chart a course for collective growth and empowerment,” she explains.

But Rachael’s impact extends far beyond the boardroom. Her commitment to community service is truly remarkable. She’s a long-term member of Impact 100, chairs the board of Visit Pensacola, and is a founding board member of Survivor Led Solutions — a non-profit empowering survivors of sexual exploitation. She’s also involved with the Satori Foundation, which introduces sailing to disadvantaged youth, wounded veterans, and individuals with autism.

Rachael’s passion for mentoring, especially young women, shines through in everything she does. “I believe having a mentor or a coach is so important,” she says. “I have mentored hundreds of young women over the 20 plus years I have lived here.” Her involvement with the Pensacola Women’s Alliance and as an Executive Mentor to students at the UWF College of Business further demonstrates this commitment.

When asked about her strengths, Rachael points to her positivity, ability to make something great out of something good, and her skill as a connector. These qualities have been crucial in building her new life in Pensacola and in her mission to make a positive difference in people’s lives.

Rachael’s journey hasn’t been without challenges, but she credits her strong female role models for inspiring her along the way. “My mum is my hero, and my two sisters inspire me,” she shares. Her mother, a kindergarten

teacher turned businesswoman, showed Rachael the power of entrepreneurship and dedication to family.

Looking back, Rachael offers this advice to her younger self: “Don’t worry about other people’s opinions too much and have confidence in your self-worth and value.” It’s a message she now strives to impart to the women she mentors, encouraging them to recognize their own strengths and value.

Today, Rachael approaches each day with a grateful mindset and a goal to make a positive difference. Whether she’s consulting with business leaders, mentoring young professionals, or sailing her 44ft. Beneteau named Atlantic Union, Rachael Gillette continues to steer toward a path that encourages us all to embrace life’s adventures and use our talents to uplift others.

Growing up on a large farm in Laurel Hill, Florida, Dr. Diane Kelley never imagined the diverse and impactful path her life would take. This accomplished educator and community leader shares her story of personal growth, civic engagement, and the power of mentorship.

“I’ve been involved in community and civic endeavors nearly my whole life,” Dr. Diane reflects. From playing piano in her grandfather’s church as a young girl to serving on non-profit boards and holding elected positions, her journey is a testament to the transformative power of community involvement.

Dr. Diane’s upbringing laid the foundation for her future success. “I grew up in a home and culture where involvement was expected,” she explains. Her father, a former Marine who balanced farm work with a civil service career, and her mother, a devoted homemaker, set a powerful example of hard work and dedication.

This early exposure to both rural and urban life shaped Dr. Diane’s worldview. Summers spent in Mobile, Alabama, introduced her to new experiences like Mardi Gras and cotillion, complementing her farm-based upbringing. “I had the best of both worlds,” she says, grateful for the diverse experiences that broadened her horizons.

As she reflects on going from a “somewhat shy student” to the accomplished professional she is today, Dr. Diane credits the many mentors who have influenced her life. “These people shared their personal values, their various immense

talents, their professional methods, their sense of creativity, ingenuity, and love of learning with me,” she says. This support network, including parents, grandparents, pastors, community leaders, and friends, sparked a genuine curiosity that continues to drive her today.

When asked about her proudest accomplishment, Dr. Diane doesn’t hesitate: “My daughter. She is both beautiful and accomplished in her own right.” This pride extends to her role as a grandmother, finding joy in watching her threeyear-old grandson discover the world.

Dr. Diane’s career in education has been a fulfilling way to give back to her community. As the current Principal of Destin High School, she aims to continue making a positive impact. “It is extremely fulfilling to me to see my former students who are now successful adults thriving on their own in the various fields they have chosen,” she shares.

Dr. Diane’s passion for education traces back to her childhood dreams. “As a child, my dream job was to be a teacher,” she recalls, laughing about how she would line up dolls for imaginary lessons. This early aspiration has blossomed into a career dedicated to nurturing the potential in others.

As she looks to the future, Dr. Diane remains committed to serving her community and inspiring others. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have when they combine passion, hard work, and a genuine desire to make a difference.

Brooke Brannon Owner, The Chapel of 30A
Santa Rosa Beach, FL

If you ever doubted that one passionate and determined woman could change an entire industry, just meet Brooke Brannon. This Florida native and self-proclaimed “slightly competitive” entrepreneur has not only built a successful wedding venue business, but she’s doing it on her own terms.

Hailing from Santa Rosa Beach, Brooke has always had the entrepreneurial spirit instilled in her by her parents. “They taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to and dedicate myself,” she says. That mindset has served her well, as Brooke has navigated the ups and downs of building multiple businesses, including her latest venture, The Chapel of 30A.

When Brooke opened The Chapel of 30A in 2023, many doubted that a venue with the word “chapel” in the name could be successful. But Brooke was undeterred. “Being told I can’t do something has been a driving force for myself nearly my entire life,” she admits with a smile.

The Chapel of 30A is now Brooke’s third wedding venue business and 13th wedding venue she has established along the Gulf Coast. Prior to this, Brooke was a partner in The Island Wedding Company, The Island Resort, and The Bellamy of 30A. She’s clearly no stranger to the wedding industry.

Brooke never thought she’d end up running wedding venues, though. “I never imagined being in the wedding venue business, ever as a child, teenager, through college, or even throughout my 20’s,” she says. But when an opportunity presented itself through her first startup, Whole Life Fitness, Brooke dove in headfirst.

“I believe being in the wedding venue business is truly my calling,” she reflects. Brooke’s passion for empowering the mind, strengthening the body, and uniting the community aligns

perfectly with the joy and celebration of weddings.

As a single mother of two young daughters, Brooke is immensely proud of her accomplishments. “Today I am a very proud single mother of two little girls as well as the sole female business owner of The Chapel of 30A. I am able to stand alone and independently make my own business decisions.”

When asked about her biggest female influence, Brooke doesn’t hesitate: “I think this has to be me, along with the guidance of the Holy Spirit!” She’s learned so much on her journey, adapting to change, failure, and circumstance. There was even a year where she thought she might be out of the wedding venue business altogether, but her determination and faith kept her going.

Part of that determination includes giving back to her community. Brooke has donated The Chapel of 30A to The Church of Eleven22, establishing a growing ministry that congregates there every Sunday. “This is a community that seeks to glorify God by surrendering to Jesus, making disciple-making disciples and transforming communities of which I plan to be heavily involved in for as long as the good Lord is willing!”

As for advice for her 20-year-old self, Brooke emphasizes the power of gratitude. “Live gratefully. Gratitude resonates in the heart. Having gratitude is perhaps the simplest form of what it means to have peace, happiness and true abundance.”

With her sights set on the future, Brooke is continuously looking for the next opportunity, whether it’s expanding her fitness business, Whole Life Fitness, or finding a new way to make a difference. As she says, “I don’t believe in setting limits to my goals and dreams.” If Brooke Brannon’s past is any indication, the future is bright indeed.

Pensacola Opera joins with mezzo soprano Caitlin McKechney, Joseph Brent, and The Opera Cowgirls to adapt Bizet’s Carmen into an acoustic, actor-musician production that will premiere to the public during Pensacola’s Foo Foo Festival in November.

Men — can’t live with them, can’t live without them. But luckily we’ve found a few good men! Leaders, mentors, partners, gentlemen. There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Gulf Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path. These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond. It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

The Reverend J. David Knight

Rector, St. Simon’s on the Sound Episcopal Church

Midway, FL

photography provided by: The Reverend J. David Knight

Inthe heart of the Gulf Coast, nestled between Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach, lives a man whose life exemplifies the power of faith, service, and perseverance. The Reverend J. David Knight, Rector of St. Simon’s on the Sound Episcopal Church, shares his inspiring journey and the wisdom he’s gained along the way.

Born in Meridian, Mississippi, and raised in Hattiesburg, David felt God’s call to ministry as a young teenager. However, like many of us facing life-changing decisions, he initially chose a different path. “Don’t hide from God!” he now advises. “Don’t be afraid to try new things, to expand your horizons, to seek deeper meaning from life than just a paycheck.”

David’s route to ministry was far from direct. He worked his way through college with an intriguing double major in Computer Science and Athletic Administration and Coaching. For nearly two decades, he built a successful career in bank data processing. It wasn’t until he was almost 40 that he finally answered God’s call and entered discernment for ordination in the Episcopal church.

This leap of faith was inspired in part by his wife, Jennifer. “My amazing wife always felt she was called to be a nurse,” David shares. Despite having two small children, Jennifer bravely entered nursing school, a decision that brought big changes to their household. Seeing her follow her true calling gave David the courage to discern and follow his own.

This significant life change came with its challenges. When David was 41, he and his family, including children aged 14, 12, and 5, moved to Chicago, Illinois for three years while he attended Episcopal seminary. This bold step demonstrates David’s commitment to his calling and his willingness to embrace change, even when it meant uprooting his family.

David’s journey took a dramatic turn in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. Serving at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Long Beach, Mississippi at the time, David found himself at the heart of the disaster. His church was completely destroyed, along with much of the community. In response to this crisis, David, and his wife Jennifer, became directly involved in establishing Camp Coast Care, a disaster relief and recovery center.

Under David’s leadership, the Episcopal diocese utilized Coast Episcopal School’s campus to house volunteers helping with recovery and rebuilding efforts. Jennifer used her medical expertise to establish a free medical clinic on site, which served over 22,000 people over a five month period with free medical care.

Despite the extensive damage to the school property, David’s church continued to meet in the school gym, where many volunteers joined for worship on Sundays and Wednesdays. This experience of leading a congregation through such challenging times undoubtedly shaped David’s ministry and strengthened his ability to provide comfort and guidance in difficult circumstances.

Today, as the Rector of St. Simon’s on the Sound Episcopal Church, David continues to live out his calling with passion and dedication. The church is deeply involved in the Ft. Walton Beach and Okaloosa County community, focusing on helping homeless school children, addressing food insecurity, and opening its doors for various events and meetings.

David’s influence extends beyond his local community. He is deeply involved in the Episcopal church’s Racial Reconciliation efforts and has served in numerous leadership capacities at the denominational and national levels. This broader involvement showcases David’s commitment to addressing important social issues and his ability to lead at various levels within the church hierarchy.

As a pastor, David considers his deepest calling to be a teacher, helping people both within and outside the church to be disciples of Jesus. He finds his greatest joy in teaching and being a “non-anxious presence in a very anxious world.” This approach to ministry reflects David’s understanding of the importance of emotional and spiritual support in today’s fast-paced, often stressful world.

David’s leadership style is rooted in collaboration and empowerment. “I love to lift others up so they can use their own unique gifts,” he explains. This philosophy is evident in his work with the church and the broader community, where he strives to create opportunities for others to serve and grow.

Looking to the future, David hopes to continue making a difference in people’s lives by being present and following Christ’s example of loving others. He believes in accepting and loving all without judgment, and being as compassionate and understanding as possible. Over the next five years, he aims to demonstrate through his actions that following Jesus is the greatest joy, while also embracing the role of a servant and accepting all without judgment.

Your wedding day is all about expressing your unique style, and accessories are the perfect way to add those personal touches that make your bridal look truly yours. As we look ahead to the upcoming wedding season, exciting trends are emerging in the world of bridal accessories. Let's explore some of the most captivating options to help you shine on your big day.

Veils with a Twist

Veils are making a major comeback, but with modern updates. Embroidered veils featuring delicate floral patterns or personalized messages are gaining popularity. Imagine walking down the aisle with your initials or wedding date subtly stitched into your veil — a beautiful keepsake you'll treasure forever. For a bolder statement, consider a colored veil in soft pastels or even a dramatic black for an edgy twist on tradition.

Statement Headpieces

Move over, tiaras! Today's brides are opting for unique headpieces that reflect their personality. Oversized floral crowns made with silk or preserved flowers offer a romantic, bohemian vibe. For a more celestial look, star-shaped hair pins and crescent moon combs are trending, often adorned with crystals or pearls for added sparkle.

Earrings That Wow

When it comes to earrings, the motto is "go big or go home." Chandelier earrings are back in a big way, featuring mixed metals and geometric shapes for

a modern edge. Mismatched earrings are also having a moment – try pairing a classic stud with a shoulder-grazing drop earring for an unexpected and stylish asymmetry.

Necklaces: Less is More

With statement earrings taking center stage, necklaces are taking a minimalist turn. Delicate chains with meaningful pendants – think birthstones or zodiac signs – offer a personal touch without overwhelming your neckline. For strapless or plunging necklines, a simple string of pearls or a thin diamond tennis necklace adds just the right amount of sparkle.

Bracelets and Rings: Stack It Up

Layering is key when it comes to wrist and hand accessories. Mix and match thin bangles in various metals, or opt for a wide cuff adorned with intricate lace-like patterns. Don't be afraid to wear multiple rings – stacking delicate bands with your engagement ring and wedding band creates a unique, curated look.

Belts and Sashes: Cinch the Deal

Bridal belts and sashes are an easy way to customize your gown and define your waist. Beaded belts with art deco-inspired designs are perfect for vintage-loving brides, while sleek satin sashes offer a clean, modern look. For a touch of whimsy, consider a thin belt adorned with tiny bows or fabric flowers.

Shoes That Steal the Show

Your wedding shoes are more than just functional – they're a chance to express your personality. Embellished sneakers are perfect for the comfort-conscious bride who still wants to make a statement. For a pop of color, vibrant satin pumps in jewel tones are on-trend and photograph beautifully. And don't forget about the "something blue" – pale blue mules or sandals are a chic way to incorporate this tradition.

Handbags with Purpose

Modern brides are opting for practical yet stylish mini-bags to carry essentials. Beaded clutches with tassel details offer vintage charm, while acrylic box clutches provide a sleek, contemporary look. Some brides are even choosing fashionable fanny packs for hands-free convenience during the reception!

Gloves: A Timeless Touch

Opera-length gloves are making a sophisticated comeback, especially for fall and winter weddings. Sheer lace gloves add a touch of romance to any gown, while leather gloves in unexpected colors like powder blue or blush pink offer a modern twist on this classic accessory.

Sustainable and Secondhand

Eco-conscious brides are increasingly turning to vintage and secondhand accessories. From art deco-inspired brooches pinned to bouquets to heirloom jewelry passed down through generations, incorporating pre-loved pieces adds character and reduces environmental impact.

Remember, the key to accessorizing your bridal look is to stay true to your personal style. Whether you're a minimalist bride or a maximalist fashionista, there are endless ways to make your accessories uniquely you. Don't be afraid to mix and match trends, and most importantly, choose pieces that make you feel beautiful, confident, and ready to say "I do!"

Exercises Breathing

When life gets overwhelming, your breath can be your best friend. Breathing exercises are powerful tools that can help regulate your emotions, reduce stress, and calm anxiety. The beauty of these techniques lies in their simplicity — they're free, always available, and can be done anywhere, anytime. Let's explore some proven breathing exercises that can transform your mental health and emotional well-being.

The Science Behind Breathing Exercises

Before we dive into specific techniques, it's worth understanding why breathing exercises work. When you're stressed or anxious, your body activates its "fight or flight" response, increasing heart rate and breathing rate. By consciously controlling your breath, you can activate the parasympathetic nervous system — often called the "rest and digest" system — which helps calm your body and mind.

1. Box Breathing: Your Anxiety-Busting Square

Imagine drawing a square in your mind. Each side of the square represents a different part of the breathing cycle:

1. Inhale for a count of 4

2. Hold your breath for a count of 4

3. Exhale for a count of 4

4. Hold your breath for a count of 4

Repeat this cycle 4-5 times or until you feel calmer. Box breathing is particularly effective for managing acute anxiety or panic attacks. It gives your mind something to focus on, distracting you from anxious thoughts while regulating your breath.

2. 4-7-8 Breathing: The Natural Tranquilizer

Developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, this technique is often called a "natural tranquilizer for the nervous system." Here's how to do it:

1. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound

2. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4

3. Hold your breath for a count of 7

4. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound, for a count of 8

5. Repeat the cycle three more times

This exercise is particularly helpful for falling asleep or calming racing thoughts. The extended exhale helps release tension and promote relaxation.

3. Belly Breathing: Embracing Your Inner Calm

Also known as diaphragmatic breathing, this technique helps you breathe more efficiently:

1. Sit or lie comfortably with one hand on your chest and the other on your belly

2. Breathe in slowly through your nose, feeling your belly expand (your chest should move very little)

3. Exhale slowly through pursed lips, feeling your belly fall

4. Repeat for 5-10 minutes

Belly breathing can lower stress, reduce blood pressure, and

improve core muscle stability. It's an excellent technique to practice daily for overall stress management.

4. Alternate Nostril Breathing: Balancing Your Energy

This technique, borrowed from yoga, is believed to balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain:

1. Sit comfortably and use your right thumb to close your right nostril

2. Inhale deeply through your left nostril

3. At the peak of inhalation, close your left nostril with your ring finger and release your thumb

4. Exhale through your right nostril

5. Inhale through the right nostril

6. Close it, release your left nostril, and exhale through the left

7. This is one cycle. Repeat for 5-10 cycles

This exercise is particularly helpful for improving focus and calming a busy mind.

Incorporating Breathing Exercises Into Your Daily Life

The key to reaping the benefits of breathing exercises is

regular practice. Here are some ways to make them a part of your routine:

1. Morning ritual: Start your day with 5 minutes of belly breathing to set a calm tone for the day

2. Stress SOS: Use box breathing when you feel overwhelmed at work or in traffic

3. Bedtime routine: Practice 4-7-8 breathing as you prepare for sleep

4. Mindful moments: Use alternate nostril breathing during your lunch break for a midday reset.

Remember, like any skill, breathing exercises become more effective with practice. Be patient with yourself as you learn these techniques. Over time, you'll find yourself naturally turning to your breath when you need to calm down or recenter.

Breathing exercises are powerful tools for managing stress and anxiety. By incorporating these techniques into your daily life, you're giving yourself a valuable gift — the ability to find calm and balance, no matter what life throws your way. So take a deep breath, and embrace the power of your own breath. Your mind and body will thank you.

Measuring Inner Success

In our fast-paced, results-driven world, it's easy to fall into the trap of equating our self-worth with our accomplishments. We often measure our value through promotions, awards, social media likes, or even the number on the scale. While achieving goals can be rewarding, tying our sense of self entirely to external metrics can lead to stress, anxiety, and a constant feeling of inadequacy. Let's explore how to find true fulfillment by looking beyond the numbers and reconnecting with our intrinsic worth.

Redefining Success

The first step in separating self-worth from achievement is to redefine what success means to you. Instead of focusing solely on tangible outcomes, consider the journey and the person you're becoming along the way. Are you learning new skills? Developing resilience? Becoming more compassionate? These internal growths are invaluable, even if they don't come with a trophy or a pay raise.

Cultivating Self-Awareness

Nurturing Relationships

Take time to reflect on your core values and what truly matters to you. Are you living in alignment with these values? Often, we chase goals that society or others have set for us, rather than what resonates with our authentic selves. Regular journaling or meditation can help you tune into your inner voice and identify what genuinely brings you joy and fulfillment.

Practicing Self-Compassion

We're often our own harshest critics. Learning to treat yourself with the same kindness you'd offer a friend is crucial in building self-worth that's independent of external validation. When you face setbacks or don't meet expectations, try this exercise: Write down what you'd say to a friend in the same situation. Then, apply that compassionate perspective to yourself.

Embracing Imperfection

Perfectionism can be a major roadblock to self-acceptance. Remember that making mistakes and having flaws is part of being human. Instead of seeing imperfections as failures, view them as opportunities for growth and learning. This shift in perspective can relieve the pressure to be "perfect" and allow you to appreciate your unique journey.

Focusing on Personal Growth

Instead of fixating on end results, concentrate on the process of personal development. Set goals that focus on learning and improvement rather than just achievement. For example, instead of aiming to lose a specific number of pounds, focus on developing healthier eating habits or finding physical activities you enjoy.

Our connections with others play a significant role in our sense of fulfillment. Invest time in building and maintaining meaningful relationships. Remember that your worth to your loved ones isn't based on your achievements, but on who you are as a person.

Practicing Gratitude

Regularly acknowledging the good in your life can shift your focus from what you lack to what you have. Keep a gratitude journal, noting three things you're thankful for each day. This practice can help you recognize your intrinsic value and the richness of your life beyond measurable achievements.

Giving Back

Contributing to something larger than yourself can provide a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment. Volunteer for a cause you care about or find small ways to help others in your daily life. This not only benefits your community but also reinforces your inherent worth as someone who can make a positive difference.

Finding Flow

Engage in activities that bring you into a state of flow –where you're so absorbed in what you're doing that you lose track of time. These moments, whether they come through a hobby, creative pursuit, or even aspects of your work, can provide a profound sense of satisfaction that's not tied to external metrics.

Remember, you are not the sum of your achievements or failures. Your worth comes from your inherent humanity — your capacity for love, growth, creativity, and connection. By shifting focus from external validation to internal fulfillment, you can build a more sustainable and authentic sense of selfworth. It's a journey that requires patience and practice, but the reward is a richer, more satisfying life that's truly your own.

The Morning

written by: Colleen Gillespie

We've all been there — the joy of hosting a fabulous party followed by the sobering reality of a messy house the next morning. But fear not! With a little planning and some savvy strategies, you can make "the morning after" a breeze. Whether you're a guest looking to lighten your host's load or a host seeking to simplify your cleanup routine, these tips will help you tackle post-party chaos with grace and efficiency.

Pre-Party Prep: Set Yourself Up for Success

The key to an easier morning after starts before the first guest arrives. Consider these pre-party preparations:

1. Clear the decks: Remove unnecessary items from party areas. Less clutter means fewer things to clean later.

2. Strategic trash placement: Position clearly marked trash and recycling bins in convenient locations. This ncourages guests to dispose of their own waste.

3. Protect surfaces: Use coasters, tablecloths, and runners to guard against spills and stains.

4. Dishwasher prep: Empty your dishwasher before the party so it's ready for a full load of dirty dishes.

During the Party: Subtle Cleanup Strategies

Keep things tidy as the night progresses with these discreet techniques:

1. The one-handed tidy: As you mingle, collect empty glasses or plates with your free hand.

2. Enlist help: Recruit a friend or family member to be your "stealth cleaner," tackling small messes throughout the event.

3. Quick wipe-downs: Keep disinfectant wipes handy to address spills immediately.

The Morning After: Divide and Conquer

When you wake up to face the aftermath, break the task into manageable chunks:

1. Start with trash: Do a sweep for obvious garbage, emptying party bins and collecting stray cups or plates.

2. Tackle the kitchen: Load the dishwasher and start it running. For hand-washing, fill the sink with hot, soapy water and let items soak while you work on other areas.

3. Sort and store: Gather borrowed items, leftover food, and any party supplies that need to be returned or stored.

4. Surface clean: Wipe down tables, counters, and other flat surfaces.

5. Floor focus: Vacuum or sweep, then mop hard floors.

6. Air it out: Open windows to freshen the space and eliminate any lingering odors.

Guest Etiquette: Lightening the Host's Load

If you're a guest, consider these thoughtful gestures to help your host:

1. Offer to stay: Ask if your host would like a hand with initial cleanup before you leave.

2. Collect your belongings: Double-check for any items you brought and gather them to avoid leaving extra clutter.

3. Consolidate your waste: Bring your used plates and glasses to the kitchen or designated cleanup area.

4. Send a thank-you: A heartfelt note the next day can lift your host's spirits as they face the cleanup.

Hosting Hacks: Simplify Your Post-Party Process

Hosts can streamline their morning-after routine with these clever ideas:

1. The "party bin": Dedicate a large plastic tub for corralling cleanup supplies. Stock it with trash bags, cleaning sprays, sponges, and gloves.

2. Overnight soaking: Fill the sink or a large bucket with soapy water and let tough-to-clean items soak overnight.

3. The laundry trick: Toss washable tablecloths, napkins, or slipcovers directly into the washing machine before bed.

4. Delegate with care: If you have family members or roommates, assign specific tasks to share the workload.

5. Reward yourself: Plan a post-cleanup treat, like ordering in breakfast or taking a relaxing bath, to motivate you through the process.

Remember, the sign of a truly great host isn't a spotless home the moment the last guest leaves — it's the warm memories created during the gathering. By implementing these strategies, you'll find that "the morning after" becomes less of a dreaded chore and more of a satisfying conclusion to your hosting success.

So the next time you're facing a post-party cleanup, take a deep breath, put on some upbeat music, and tackle the task with confidence. Your future self (and your grateful guests) will thank you for your preparedness and gracious hospitality.
