Last year, I lucked into an unforgettable girls’ trip with a quick getaway to Panama City Beach. I was pulling double duty as pup-sitter for some amazing friends off on their welldeserved honeymoon, so I dragged my daughter and mom along for a weeklong beach vacay. Sure, we had a little hold-your-breath moment thanks to Hurricane Helene getting a bit too close for comfort, but otherwise it was all blue skies, sandy toes, and puppy snuggles. We struck the perfect balance between staying in, sleeping late, and movie nights — and getting out for some thrifting, sunbathing, and sweet treats (Thomas Donuts, IYKYK!) . And as much as I love a good staycay, there was truly nowhere else I wanted to be: just me, my two favorite girls, and a feels-like-home spot to return to after a day that somehow managed to be both jam-packed and perfectly relaxing. It definitely didn’t hurt that my bestie took the time to leave us a list of ideas on keeping full and busy while we were there!

With all the suggestions we’ve collected for you in this issue — from places to stay to things to do — you’ll be sure to find your cozy spot, too, after a day of out-and-about fun! If you still need some help planning your summertime adventure — check out The Vacation Whisperer (pg 34) to learn how a travel agent might be a great way for you to simplify your trip. Don’t forget that Scarlett is the perfect traveling companion when on vacay. With our digital edition you can read on the go on your phone or tablet with full access to all the latest hot topics. Hotel Effie Sandestin

written by: Sandestin Resort | photography provided by: Hotel Effie
with Jennifer Lombard Knight

On Florida’s Emerald Coast, nestled within the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, Hotel Effie Sandestin has quickly become a standout destination for both leisure and business travelers. Behind its rise is a woman whose career has spanned continents and luxury brands, General Manager Jennifer Lombard Knight. With nearly two decades of global hospitality experience, Jennifer brings a rare blend of international sophistication and heartfelt Southern hospitality to every corner of Hotel Effie.

Born and raised in Europe, Jennifer’s journey in hospitality

began in Switzerland, where she studied the craft at one of the world’s top hotel management schools. Her early career reads like a tour of the globe’s finest establishments — from the Michelin-starred Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme to Fairmont Le Montreux Palace in Switzerland, and five-star posts in Asia and the UK with IHG Hotels & Resorts. Selected for IHG’s prestigious AMEA Future Leaders Program, she honed her skills in operations and strategy at landmark properties like InterContinental Paris Le Grand and Crowne Plaza London.

That global foundation laid the groundwork for a leadership style that is both imaginative and precise. At Hotel Effie Sandestin, Jennifer oversees 250 rooms and suites, a luxury spa, and four acclaimed food and beverage outlets, including the awardwinning Ovide and Ara — the only rooftop pool and lounge along the Emerald Coast. But what sets her apart is not just her résumé … it’s her vision.

Jennifer’s focus is on creating experiences that are elevated and intuitive, whether it’s through enhancing wellness and culinary offerings or refining the details

that make a stay memorable. She is a hands-on leader who believes that luxury should feel personal, and she leads with calm purpose and clarity. Whether it’s how a cocktail is garnished at the rooftop bar or how a guest is welcomed at Spa Lilliana, every detail is an opportunity to deliver excellence with soul.

Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping Hotel Effie’s identity as an Autograph Collection hotel — a designation earned without the need for an extensive property improvement plan, a rare and notable accomplishment. Jennifer saw in Hotel Effie the chance to deliver something distinctive: a place where the charm of its namesake, Grandma Effie, could be honored through impeccable service and warmth, while embracing a modern, sophisticated edge.

What makes Hotel Effie unique is not just its setting or amenities, it’s the culture Jennifer has cultivated. Under her guidance, the hotel is more than a place to stay; it’s a place where connection, intention, and hospitality converge. Her strategic goals continue to evolve the guest experience with immersive programming and elevated service for events, corporate retreats, and vacationers seeking something more.

In an industry traditionally led by men, Jennifer Lombard Knight stands out as a symbol of progress and possibility. She leads not only with operational excellence, but with a passion for mentoring and empowering

the next generation of hospitality professionals. Through her, Hotel Effie becomes more than a luxury resort, it becomes a benchmark for what hospitality can be when it’s led with vision, integrity, and heart.

“There’s something incredibly special about what we’re building here,” Jennifer says. “It’s a place

where elevated luxury feels personal, and that starts with our people — empowering our teams to lead with confidence and authenticity.”

Jennifer’s story is more than a career chronicle — it’s a narrative of leadership, culture, and innovation that continues to shape one of the

most celebrated hotels on the Gulf Coast. In her capable hands, Hotel Effie isn’t just welcoming guests, it’s redefining Southern hospitality for the modern era.

“It’s a place where elevated luxury feels personal, and that starts with our people — empowering our teams to lead with confidence and authenticity.”

Heroines

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family inbetween. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them.

In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

These fearless women are that and more.

Fort Walton Beach, FL

April

Sarver is the kind of woman whose roots and wings are equally strong. Born and raised in Fort Walton Beach, April has built a life deeply connected to the Northwest Florida community she loves. As Director of Marketing and Communications at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, she blends her creative drive with a passion for the region’s beauty, history, and promise. But her path to success hasn’t been about shortcuts or easy wins; it’s been about showing up, staying curious, and living with both grit and grace, a balance instilled in her by her family. Her grandparents, who left Nebraska for Florida in 1956, built a legacy of hard work that her father and uncle

carried forward. From them, April learned resilience. From her mother, a woman of deep compassion and quiet strength, she learned the importance of empathy and kindness. That mix of toughness and tenderness became the foundation for how she leads, works, and lives.

April was the first in her family to attend college, graduating from the University of West Florida with the support of her husband while raising two boys. She didn’t take the easy road, but instead chose the one that required persistence and principle. That drive led her into a career in tourism marketing, where her natural curiosity and fascination with consumer behavior found the perfect

outlet. For April, asking “why” is more than a habit — it’s where her best ideas begin. Marketing, especially in tourism, allows her to test new ideas, refine strategies, and create meaningful connections between visitors and the community she loves. Beyond metrics and campaigns, one of her greatest joys now is mentoring the next generation of professionals, helping them find their own spark. While April’s professional life is impressive, her proudest accomplishment has nothing to do with titles or awards — It’s her sons. From an early age, April dreamed of being a mom, and watching her boys grow into men with purpose has been her greatest reward. With unwavering

photography provided by: Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort

support, she and her husband nurtured their sons’ passion for fishing, and today they’re both thriving in the industry — one a young captain in Destin Harbor, the other a skilled first mate in Pensacola and sought-after rod builder throughout Northwest Florida. Through them, April sees the lasting impact of guidance, love, and belief.

People might be surprised to learn that in 2020, April underwent brain surgery after years of unexplained health issues. The experience was terrifying, but transformative. It gave her not only her health back, but a renewed appreciation for life’s simple moments. Today, April strives to live each day with presence, humility, and a grateful heart. For her, balance is found on the water, whether she’s casting a line or simply floating with friends, time on a boat brings her clarity and joy. It’s where stress fades, laughter flows, and life feels beautifully uncomplicated.

April’s definition of success has also evolved over time. While she’s always valued giving her best, she now understands that success isn’t just about work. It’s about giving your best to every area of life — faith, family, friendships, passions — and recognizing that there are no

bonus points for burnout. This perspective shapes how she leads and how she mentors others. She wants people to know that leadership isn’t about titles, but about presence, integrity, and the willingness to grow. Her own growth came from adversity, particularly an early career experience where a harsh manager taught her exactly the kind of leader she never wanted to be. That uncomfortable moment became a catalyst for change, driving her to finish her education and rise with purpose.

Looking ahead, April is excited about the possibilities in digital marketing, especially the emerging role of AI in SEO and programmatic advertising. She’s always eager to learn, and her recent experiences at the eTourism Summit have only deepened that passion. Personally, she’s stepping into the joyful new role of grandmother, ready to pass down traditions of adventure, curiosity, and beach days to the next generation. April’s story is one of steady growth, hard-won wisdom, and heartfelt connection. A reminder that with grit, grace, and gratitude, you can build a life you truly love.

WhenTaylor Smith walks the beach near her home in Perdido Key, Florida, it’s more than just a peaceful morning ritual, it’s a reminder of the freedom she’s worked hard to create, and now helps other women claim for themselves. As a business coach, keynote speaker, and founder of The Power Table, Taylor is on a mission to show women what’s possible when they combine clarity, strategy, and community. Originally from Arlington, Texas, Taylor now calls the Emerald Coast home, where she lives with her husband and two cats. But while her current setting is idyllic, the path that brought her here is one of bold pivots and purpose-driven hustle.

Taylor didn’t set out to be an entrepreneur. Her first passion was education. By 23, she was a college professor with peer-reviewed publications and a clear career trajectory — until she realized that the academic world didn’t match her ambitions or value her contributions. A shift into entrepreneurship wasn’t part of the original plan, but it quickly became her calling. She began exploring side hustles and discovered a knack for marketing, which soon led to a full-time leap into business. What began as a way to supplement her income evolved into a thriving coaching practice and a growing online community of more than 19,000 women.

Through her work, Taylor has coached more than 3,000 women, helping them grow their businesses using digital marketing, social media, and personal branding. But despite the power of the online space, she realized that something was missing: connection. “Running a business online can be profitable

photography provided by: Stephanie Halas Photography
Taylor Smith Founder, The Power Table
Perdido Key, FL

and fulfilling — but also incredibly lonely,” she says. That insight sparked the creation of The Power Table, a business conference and community for women entrepreneurs. What started in 2023 with small coffee meetups turned into The Power Table LIVE, the only in-person conference for women in online business on the Emerald Coast. The 2025 event drew nearly 100 women from across the country, proving that the hunger for real-world support and collaboration is universal.

The Power Table LIVE isn’t your average networking brunch. It’s a high-impact event designed to educate, inspire, and connect. Featuring powerhouse speakers like Jordan Gill, Heather Blankenship, and top-ranked podcast hosts, the 2025 conference spotlighted women who have collectively generated over $40 million in revenue and assets. Yet, what resonated most with attendees was how approachable the speakers were. Taylor is intentional about making success feel accessible. “This isn’t just about featuring successful women — it’s about making them accessible,” she says. “When you sit in a room with women who have built incredible success, you start to see what’s possible for yourself.”

Taylor’s leadership is deeply influenced by her mom, Tabatha, who taught her that kindness and confidence can coexist. That lesson lives on in Taylor’s business ethos — empowering women to take up space, charge their worth, and pursue big ideas without apology. She’s also fiercely committed to giving back, offering scholarship tickets to The Power Table and donating to organizations like Survivor-Led Solutions. Her vision for the next five years includes expanding mentorship, scholarships, and community partnerships to reach even more women ready to grow.

These days, Taylor defines success not by revenue or hustle, but by freedom — freedom to choose how she spends her time, who she works with, and how she shows up in her life. She balances her ambitious goals with firm boundaries, structured work weeks, and joy-filled routines like Thursday night pickleball. Her advice to her younger self? Say yes, try everything, and don’t wait for permission. “Resumes don’t define potential,” she says. “If I hadn’t tried a couple of side hustles, I would’ve never realized how transferable my skills were.”

As she looks to the future, Taylor is dreaming even bigger for The Power Table, expanding the brand’s reach through podcasts, masterminds, and new digital programs. But no matter how much the platform grows, her message stays the same: You don’t have to do this alone. There’s a seat for you at the table.

Thrill rides, waterparks, coastal lodging options, and a free entertainment district–it’s all here, at OWA Parks & Resort!

Vincent W. Mayfield, known to most as Vince or Vinny, has never been one to sit still or let life pass him by. Born at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts, his story began with movement — his father deployed to Vietnam just three weeks after his birth, and his mother drove him to stay with family in Illinois. From there, the Air Force lifestyle carried Vince across the country and even overseas, but his roots eventually settled in Shalimar, Florida, where he grew up, went to school, and now resides in Poquito Bayou with his wife, Kimberly, and their children, Molly and Wes.

As co-founder and CEO of both Bit-Wizards and TalkingParents, Vince has helped shape not only thriving businesses but also a strong local presence in Northwest Florida. Bit-Wizards, a business IT management and consulting firm, and TalkingParents, a co-parenting application, were both born out of a desire to solve problems and serve others. Vince’s sense of service extends beyond business, with deep involvement in community efforts. He currently serves as Board President of the Gulf Coast Council of Scouting America and has held leadership roles with the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Northwest Florida State College Foundation Board, and the Okaloosa County School District Citizens Sales Tax Oversight Committee. He’s also the founder of two political action committees, Be A Force for Good and Make It So PAC, focused on improving local leadership and supporting community initiatives.

Much of Vince’s passion for giving back stems from a lifetime of watching service in action. His mother, Mary A. Mayfield, was a fierce advocate for others through her role as Director of Catholic Social Services. Her quiet, determined service deeply shaped Vince’s values, whether it was helping Vietnamese and Cuban refugees as a child or giving up his bedroom one Christmas so a homeless mother and her child could have a warm place to stay. Vince’s father, an Air Force Chief Master Sergeant, modeled generosity and humility, fixing up old bicycles for kids and supporting young airmen far from home. These

examples taught Vince that service doesn’t need to be talked about, it just needs to be done.

Through Bit-Wizards, Vince co-launched the Be the Magic Foundation, which supports youth programs, special needs initiatives, animal welfare, and community development, generating more than $520,000 in economic impact each year. He’s a regular supporter of local schools, funding academics, arts, and athletics. And in the years ahead, he plans to keep building companies that prioritize people and purpose over profit. He also hopes to guide Molly and

Wes through school and into adulthood with the same faith-based values and sense of duty that defined his own upbringing.

Looking back, Vince’s proudest accomplishments span from serving his country and earning his MBA from Notre Dame to building companies that matter and raising grounded, driven children. He’s also proud of being there for the people he loves — whether it’s helping his father through aging or supporting his wife’s family during a cancer battle. He sees leadership not just in terms of boardrooms or businesses, but in showing up and doing the hard work behind the scenes.

If he could give his 20-year-old self advice, it would be to recognize that life is rarely black and white. He’d urge himself to trust in God’s plan, stay open to reinvention, and understand that strength includes vulnerability. He’d remind his younger self that when life veers off course — as it did when his dream of a military career was cut short — there’s often a better path waiting. One that includes building something meaningful, leading with integrity, and discovering that family, not just business, is the legacy worth striving for.

Ultimately, Vince measures his success not by accolades or achievements, but by the impact he’s had on others. Whether he’s mentoring employees, raising future leaders at home, or giving a hand to someone in need, his life’s work is rooted in gratitude, faith, and service. He credits his biggest female influence, his mother, for instilling that spirit, and he carries her legacy forward every day, in every choice he makes.

The Vacation

Whisperer

We’ve all been there — lost in a maze of travel websites, scrolling through reviews, comparing flight prices, and wondering if that “beachfront” hotel actually touches sand. Planning a trip can be a full-time job (on top of the one you already have), which is why more and more savvy travelers are turning to the real experts: travel agents.

Yep, travel agents are back in style, and not just for honeymoons or luxury cruises. They’re the secret weapon behind dream vacations that actually go smoothly. Whether you’re craving a romantic escape, a girls’ trip, a family-friendly adventure, or a solo soul-searching getaway, a travel agent can save you time, money, and major headaches.

So, what does a travel agent actually do?

Think of a travel agent as your personal vacation matchmaker, logistics guru, and behind-the-scenes superhero. They don’t just book your flights and hotels. They design an entire travel experience based on your unique style, budget, and wish list. From recommending the perfect destination to handling passport requirements, airport transfers, excursions, and even restaurant reservations, they’re your go-to guide before, during, and after your trip.

And unlike booking engines or anonymous call centers, travel agents offer real, human support. Plans change? Flights get delayed? You’re not alone on hold with a customer service robot. Your travel agent is just a call or text away, ready to help fix it fast.

Why not just book it yourself online?

You can DIY your travel … but that doesn’t always mean you should. While online booking sites might seem convenient, they often come with hidden fees, confusing terms, or lackluster customer service when something goes wrong. A travel agent, on the other hand, knows how to navigate the fine print, avoid scams, and find the best value, not just the lowest price. Plus, they have insider access to upgrades, packages, and perks that you might not find online. Think free breakfast, room upgrades, spa credits, or early check-in at a resort. Many agents also have firsthand knowledge of destinations and can offer recommendations you won’t find in a generic travel blog.

When should you use a travel agent?

Here’s a hint: almost any time you’re planning a trip that’s more than just a quick drive away. But especially for:

International travel – They can guide you through visas, health regulations, currency tips, and language barriers.

Group travel – Want to plan a bachelorette bash in Cabo or a multigenerational family reunion? Your agent will keep everyone organized and happy.

Special occasions – Destination weddings, anniversaries, milestone birthdays ... why risk glitches on the most important trips of your life?

Cruises or tours – Travel agents often get exclusive deals or extras you won’t see online.

Complex itineraries – Multi-city adventures or once-in-a-lifetime experiences are easier (and less stressful) when managed by a pro.

Ready to Pack Your Bags?

Leave the stress behind and let a professional take the wheel (or at least book the flight). With a trusted travel agent on your side, all you need to do is dream big and show up with your suitcase.

A Vacation Guide

to New Orleans

hotel and attraction picks by: Jo Rich + Marty Stanovich | photography by: Teeka LaTeeLa

New Orleans was recently named the number one food city in the world, and in our last edition, Pensacola Foodies, Jo Rich and Marty Stanovich, shared some of their favorite NOLA restaurants. But of course — if you’re going to travel to the Big Easy, you have to have somewhere fabulous to stay! So, in a city with so many incredible options, here are a few of their favorite hotels and nearby attractions.

The Roosevelt

130 Roosevelt Way, New Orleans, LA 70112

Hotel Monteleone

214 Royal Street, New Orleans, LA 70130

The Mercantile Hotel 727 S Peters Street, New Orleans, LA 70130

The Pontchartrain Hotel 2031 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130

The Blackbird Hotel 1612 Prytania Street, New Orleans, LA 70130

The

Roosevelt

Starting right off Canal in the Central Business District lies perhaps New Orleans grandest old lady since 1893 — The Roosevelt. Every Christmas, the best decorations in the city run the full block from Baronne to O’Keefe streets … but don’t wait for the holidays — it’s amazing any time. You can visit the legendary Sazerac Bar, where the self-titled cocktail was invented, make your way up to the Rooftop Bar for some of the best views of the City, or enjoy many other options on the ground floor. But if you’re really lucky, you’ll get invited to an event in the Blue Room — the legendary 1936 space from which WWL Radio broadcasted the Big Band era all across the United States from right in the heart of New Orleans … Louis, Ella, Frank — all the greats played here, and the room is nothing less than magnificent even today.

Nearby Attractions

One block up and cross the street and you are on Rue Bourbon, also known as Bourbon Street … if that’s your thing. But just two blocks into the Quarter, you can visit The Museum of Death — (sorry, no pics allowed, but it will be worth the visit). While in the neighborhood drop in at The Saint Hotel and indulge in craft cocktails at the elegant Burgundy Bar, right across the street.

Hotel Monteleone

Want to stay in the French Quarter? You can’t go wrong with the family-owned and -operated jewel since 1886, The Monteleone. The lobby alone offers an incredible oasis from the hustle and bustle of the Quarter; Criollo Restaurant serves fantastic Creole cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and if your timing is just right, you can grab one of the 24 seats at the legendary Carousel Bar. Pop around the corner to Canal Street and sneak up to the second floor of Dickie Brennan’s Palace Café. Upstairs is hidden one of New Orleans great secrets – the Black Duck Bar, heaven for the rum connoisseur, a very underappreciated by-product of the Louisiana sugar cane industry.

Walk just one block down Royal to Vintage 329 and you’ll find New Orleans’ best collection of vintage jewelry, original art, hats, barware, and so much more.

The Mercantile Hotel

Just a few blocks from Canal Place in the Warehouse District is a sweet gem — The Mercantile Hotel, the former site of the Henderson Sugar Refinery. It’s a great location near many wonderful restaurants. With an adorable little bar and a great buffet breakfast (with maybe the coolest coffee machine you will ever see, offering hundreds of options) it’s a true sleeper with well-appointed rooms, just off the beaten path.

Nearby Attractions

You can walk out the front door, turn left and actually see Saks Fifth Avenue in the distance. But it’s also two blocks from the Riverwalk Mall (repurposed from the 1984 World’s Fair) and a serviceable collection of retailers and places to eat. When there, you can check out Mochi XO that is famous for the Japanese-style mochi donuts and bubble teas. Right down the street is the legendary 1902 Ernst Café, and just around the corner is Mulate’s, where you can experience true Cajun food and dance to live Zydeco music.

The Pontchartrain Hotel

In the Garden District, a true foodie has to stay at the historic Pontchartrain Hotel, a quaint property soon to turn 100 that’s hosted many great celebrities and presidents throughout its great history. Right on site you can have coffee and breakfast in the Silver Whistle Café, lunch in the Bayou Bar, dinner at the eclectic and fabulous Jack Rose and then a nightcap at the rooftop bar, Hot Tin, a perfect spot to watch the lights of the city twinkle.

Nearby Attractions

Just across the street (if you can get a seat) is the number one steakhouse in New Orleans, Mr. John’s (named after John Santopadre) and diagonally across St. Charles is a great sushi bar called Poseidon … very unassuming, but stunningly delicious with a huge menu and crazy fast service. Tour around the neighborhood with the St. Charles Avenue Streetcar Line right at your front doorstep. Do yourself a favor and get a full day Jazzy Pass and ride all the way to the end of the line to Carrollton and back, taking in all the architectural sites along the way.

The Blackbird Hotel

Check out the all-new Blackbird Hotel, also in the Lower Garden District on Prytania. This hidden gem opened in 2024 to rave reviews. It is a 19th century restoration carved out in a neighborhood of beautiful Antebellum homes — dark, Gothic, and full of nooks and crannies while remaining incredibly elegant. Enjoy the coffee shop, grill, two bars, and the lush courtyard, pool, and the threehole putting green tucked away at the back of the property. The lucky 13 all-king rooms stay booked, so plan your trip there very early.

Nearby Attractions

For a leisurely stroll, take the short walk toward the river to Magazine Street and explore all kinds of cool shopping, from antiques to boutiques, and the vibrant arts scene of NOLA.

As Jo and Marty put it, “New Orleans is a city of so many great hotels. Add to that so many super fun things to do nearby each of these, and we can’t wait for you to experience them for yourselves!”

OMAN OMAN

How to be Healthy

Hello! I’m Joanna Davis, resident Foodie expert — a lifelong lover of delicious bites and local gems. Born into a Filipino family where food was a cherished love language, meals were more than just nourishment — they were connection, celebration, and culture. From becoming a Yelp Elite to launching a successful foodfocused Instagram page, I now have over 50,000 followers and have judged food festivals, dined across the Emerald Coast, and supported countless small businesses from Pensacola to Destin.

Isit possible to love food and love fitness? At first glance, the two might seem at odds — how can someone indulge in rich, flavorful meals and still stay committed to a healthy lifestyle? I’m here to tell you: yes, you absolutely can.

As women, many of us have complicated relationships with food. While for some men food may feel more utilitarian — a means to fuel the body — many women experience food as something far more emotional. It’s tied to joy, nostalgia, celebration, and sometimes, stress. And while an emotional connection with food can sometimes be tricky to navigate, it doesn’t have to be unhealthy.

You can enjoy sweets, carbs, and your favorite indulgent dishes — and still live a balanced, health-minded life.

A little about me: I’m not a nutritionist or a registered dietitian. I am, however, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (20 years and counting), a selfproclaimed fitness enthusiast (10 years strong), and a certified foodie by way of the Instagram school of hard knocks (5 delicious years). I’ve personally tested the extremes — from the rigid discipline of bodybuilding competition prep to the post-show emotional rollercoaster — and finally landed on a liberating middle ground that honors both a love of food and a love of movement.

So how do I stay balanced, especially when dining out? Here are five principles I live by:

Stay Active — Find What You Love

We all know exercise is good for us, but there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. It doesn’t have to mean running marathons or sweating through CrossFit (though I’ve dabbled — and yes, those chiropractic visits were real).

For me now, it’s lifting weights and, in the past, it’s been Zumba. But for others it could be rollerblading, paddleboarding (an activity we celebrate here on the Gulf Coast), or the latest fitness craze — pickleball. Whether it’s a full-blown

with Scarlett’s Foodie Expert
Joanna Davis

workout or just chasing your kids around the backyard, movement matters. Try different activities and find what sparks joy. And in the words of Nike® — Just do it.

Confession: I often say I work out so I can eat. And honestly? That’s not far from the truth. It keeps me motivated and feeling my best.

Prioritize Protein

Protein helps keep you full longer and can curb the urge to overdo it on carbs. When dining out, look for meals with a solid protein source — whether it’s grilled chicken, tofu, shrimp, or lean beef.

At home, I keep protein-rich snacks on hand like Greek yogurt, nuts, and hard-boiled eggs. These help me avoid reaching for chips or sweets when I’m just snacky, not truly hungry.

Hydrate First

Sometimes what we interpret as hunger is actually just thirst. Next time a craving strikes out of nowhere, try drinking a glass of water first. Staying hydrated throughout the day can help reduce mindless snacking and keep your body in balance.

Keep Your Mind Busy

There’s an old saying: An idle mind is the devil’s playground. When we’re bored or unengaged, it’s easy to start thinking about food — even if we’re not hungry. Stay mentally active by diving into projects that stimulate and distract in a healthy way. Try a DIY home project, hit up a local farmers market with friends, or do something creative with your kids. Redirecting your energy can do wonders for staying mindful around food.

Sharing is Caring (and Smart!)

Yes, you can enjoy all the foods. You just don’t have to eat it all. One of my favorite ways to dine out is with friends or family, ordering a few dishes to share. That way, I get to taste everything without overindulging. Food is meant to be enjoyed — and it’s even more satisfying when it’s part of a shared experience. Savor the flavors, take your time, and listen to your body’s cues to know when you’re feeling full.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to building a healthy relationship with food. But these strategies have helped me find a sustainable balance — one that embraces both fitness and the foodie lifestyle. I’m living proof that you don’t have to choose between the two.

So go ahead, order the dessert — just bring a fork (or two) to share.

The Arc Gateway

Empowering Lives, Enriching Communities

For over 70 years, The Arc Gateway has been a beacon of hope for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. What began as a small initiative has grown into a vital lifeline for countless families, providing essential services that foster independence, inclusion, and personal growth. At its core, The Arc Gateway believes that every individual, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life.

A Place to Live, Learn, Grow, and Thrive

Early intervention is crucial for children with developmental delays and disabilities. The Pearl Nelson Child Development Center is dedicated to providing young learners with the support they need to reach their full potential. Through speech, occupational, and physical therapy, as well as developmental instruction, the center helps children build essential skills for a brighter future. Families find comfort knowing their children are receiving specialized care in a nurturing environment.

One such success story is Emma, a 3-year-old who struggled with speech and motor skills. When she first arrived at the Pearl Nelson Center, she could barely form words and had difficulty with balance. Through the center’s comprehensive therapy services, Emma has made remarkable progress — learning to communicate her needs, improving her coordination, and gaining confidence with each session. Her mother, Sarah, recalls the moment Emma said “Mama” for the first time after months of therapy: “It was like hearing music. We finally had hope.” Stories like Emma’s are a testament to the life-changing impact of early intervention.

Complementing these efforts is Help Me Grow Escambia, a vital resource connecting families to early detection and intervention services. By providing developmental screenings and linking parents to community programs, Help Me Grow ensures that children receive the support they need as early as possible. Through partnerships with organizations like the Pearl Nelson Center, this initiative empowers families and fosters brighter futures for children across the region.

For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, finding purpose and independence can be a lifelong challenge. The Arc Gateway provides transformative programs that offer structure, skill-building, and community connection at every stage of life.

Take Robert, a 45-year-old who spent years relying on family for support. As his parents aged, they worried about his future. That changed when he joined The Arc Gateway’s Pollak Training Center, where he gained life skills, social connections, and a renewed sense of independence.

Beyond the practical skills he’s developed, Robert has found something even more important: a sense of belonging. He has made friends, discovered new talents, and built a routine that gives him purpose. His involvement in art and music therapy has unlocked a creative side he never knew he had, helping him express himself while boosting his confidence.

His sister, Emily, shares, “For years, we worried about what would happen to Robert if we weren’t there to care for him. Now, he has purpose, confidence, and a support system beyond our family. He’s learning, growing, and proving to himself — and to us — that he can thrive.”

Additionally, The Arc Gateway operates six group homes, providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for

individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Each home fosters independence while offering personalized care tailored to the unique needs of its residents. With a strong, family-like atmosphere, dedicated staff assist with daily living activities, skill development, and community integration, ensuring that each individual has the opportunity to lead a fulfilling life. These homes are more than just places to live — they are vibrant communities where residents build friendships, gain confidence, and experience a true sense of belonging.

Breaking Barriers in Community-Based Employment

Meaningful employment is more than just a paycheck — it’s about dignity, purpose, and inclusion. The Arc Gateway partners with RESPECT of Florida and Armstrong World Industries to provide community-based employment opportunities, allowing individuals with disabilities to gain valuable job experience while earning competitive wages.

Additionally, The Arc’s Program for Adult Learning and Support (PALS) and Supported Employment services provide individuals with job readiness training, coaching, and placement assistance. The goal is to help them secure, retain, and advance in their careers. These initiatives empower individuals to achieve financial independence, personal fulfillment, and make meaningful contributions to both their workplaces and communities.

A New Direction: Expanding Opportunities

There’s a common misconception that The Arc Gateway primarily focuses on sheltered work programs, such as plant resale and shredding services. While these programs once played a role in daily operations, changes in funding models and client participation have led the organization to pivot. Rather than limiting opportunities, The Arc Gateway is investing in activities, including art, music, and animal therapy which will enrich lives and provide experiential learning. Clients also engage in physical education, life skills training, and community outings — expanding their world in exciting new ways.

A Community of Support

The Arc Gateway is more than just a service provider; it is an advocate, a teacher, and a friend. Through its residential housing programs, transportation services, and life-enhancing activities, the organization ensures that individuals with disabilities are not only cared for but celebrated.

Participants are given the opportunity to live full lives through meaningful experiences and quality options, allowing them to lead lives of purpose, significance, and inclusion.

As The Arc Gateway continues to innovate and expand, one thing remains constant: its unwavering commitment to empowering lives and enriching communities. For the individuals who rely on its services, The Arc Gateway is more than just an organization — it’s a family.

Cycle Syncing

Ever feel like you’re a different person from week to week? You’re not imagining things, it’s your body constantly working to get you ready for the next phase. Your menstrual cycle isn’t just about “that time of the month” — it’s a four-phase hormonal symphony that affects everything from your cravings to your creativity. Cycle syncing is all about learning to ride the wave instead of fighting the current. Once you know what’s happening in your body, you can actually plan your life around it (yes, really) and feel more in sync … literally.

Let’s start with the menstrual phase , aka your period. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone take a nosedive, which is why you often feel low energy and moody. This is your body’s built-in rest period, and honestly, it’s earned. The best move? Go gentle. Think cozy walks, yin yoga, or doing absolutely nothing — without guilt. Your body is shedding its uterine lining and is working hard behind the scenes. In terms of food, go for warm, iron-rich meals like lentil soup, leafy greens, and dark chocolate (because obviously) . Productivity-wise, this is a reflective time. Journaling, brainstorming, and quiet planning tend to come easier

than socializing or multitasking. Cancel that nonessential meeting. You’re in your wise-woman era.

Next comes the follicular phase , the week or so after your period. Estrogen starts rising, and suddenly you feel like a human again. Energy returns, ideas spark, and you’re more likely to say “yes” to everything — including that new workout class or reorganizing your entire closet. Take advantage of this momentum. Try more intense workouts like cardio, circuit training, or dance. Your body is ready to move. Foodwise, lighter meals like smoothies, sprouts, quinoa bowls, and fresh veggies will keep that upward energy going strong. Productivity is your superpower here. This is a great time to start new projects, schedule meetings, and make decisions. You’re sharp, optimistic, and magnetic. Ride the high, babe!

Then comes the ovulatory phase , which is short (only about 3 to 5 days) but powerful. Estrogen peaks, and you’re basically glowing. You’re also biologically wired to connect. Social energy soars, your skin looks great, and confidence gets a boost. If you’ve ever felt like a total boss for no reason, check your cycle — you might be ovulating. Use this phase to your advantage:

host the presentation, go on the date, pitch the idea. Your words have power. As for workouts, this is your peak strength phase, so lift heavier, run faster, or team up for a group class. You’ll likely feel strong and unstoppable. Fuel up with high-fiber foods like raw veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains to help your liver process all those hormones. You’re on fire, enjoy it.

Finally, there’s the luteal phase , also known as the PMS zone. Progesterone rises, energy dips, and you might feel more sensitive or introverted. But don’t write this phase off — it’s great for wrapping things up and getting things done behind the scenes. Your focus shifts inward, making it a great time for detail work, editing, and organizing. Physically, slow it down. Pilates, walking, and gentle strength training are your best friends. If motivation is low, that’s not laziness, it’s biology. Embrace comforting meals like roasted root vegetables, complex carbs, and magnesium-rich foods like pumpkin seeds or bananas. And yes, it’s totally okay to cry over commercials during this phase.

What makes cycle syncing so powerful is understanding that your body flows in cycles — it’s a living rhythm we can learn to follow. Once you start noticing the patterns and honoring them, everything gets easier: work, workouts, even your mood swings. It’s not about controlling your cycle; it’s about partnering with it. So next time you wonder why yesterday’s to-do list feels impossible today, check your calendar. Your body might just be telling you to try a different groove.

Linen Fabric

Linen might just be the ultimate fabric for warm weather — lightweight, breathable, and effortlessly chic. This timeless textile has been a wardrobe staple for centuries, and it’s no surprise why. Whether you’re lounging on a hot summer day, styling an elegant evening look, or upgrading your home with fresh, airy accents, linen fabric has a unique ability to be both casual and sophisticated. But what exactly makes linen so special, and how do you take care of it to keep it looking fresh? Let’s dive in and discover why linen deserves a permanent spot in your closet and your home.

From Plant to Fabric

Linen fabric is made from the fibers of the flax plant, one of the oldest cultivated crops in human history. The process begins with harvesting the flax plants, which are then retted (a process where the outer fibers of the plant are softened) before being spun into yarn. The fibers from flax are much stronger and finer than those from most other plants, making them perfect for creating the durable yet breathable fabric that we know and love.

Once the flax fibers are spun into thread, they are woven into fabric. Linen’s signature texture comes from its slightly irregular weave, which gives it a natural, casual appearance. While it has a crisp, fresh feel when new, linen becomes softer and more comfortable with every wash — meaning it gets even better with age. And while linen has a reputation for wrinkles, many people find the slightly rumpled look part of its charm and appeal.

Fashion & Beyond

Summer Wardrobe: Linen is synonymous with breezy summer outfits. From flowy dresses to tailored trousers, linen garments are lightweight and effortless. Linen shirts, blouses, and skirts are perfect for both casual and formal settings, adding a chic, laid-back vibe to your outfit.

Loungewear & Pajamas: Linen sleepwear is a game changer. It’s naturally moisture-wicking and breathable, so it helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep. Whether it’s a linen nightgown or a pair of comfy pajama pants, you’ll stay cool and comfortable all night long.

Home Decor: Linen isn’t just for clothing — it’s a www.ScarlettMag.com

popular choice for home textiles too. Linen bedding, curtains, and pillow covers create a soft, relaxed vibe in any room. Its natural texture adds a touch of elegance without feeling too formal. Plus, linen sheets get softer with every wash, making them a luxury you can enjoy night after night.

Accessories: Linen accessories, like scarves, tablecloths, or tote bags, offer a refined yet effortless touch to any look or space. Its natural appearance makes it a perfect complement to any aesthetic, whether you’re going for minimalist, bohemian, or coastal chic.

Caring for Linen

Linen is one of those fabrics that gets better with time, but it does require a little extra care to keep it looking its best. Here’s how to maintain your linen garments and accessories:

Washing: Most linen items can be machine washed, but be sure to check the care label first. For the best results, wash linen in cool or lukewarm water with a gentle detergent. To avoid shrinkage, choose a mild cycle and wash linen garments separately from heavy fabrics like denim or towels.

Drying: Linen is best air-dried to maintain its shape and texture. Lay your linen items flat on a clean towel or hang them to dry. If you must use a dryer, set it to low heat and remove the fabric while it’s still slightly damp to prevent over-drying and shrinking.

Ironing: Linen wrinkles naturally, but that’s part of its relaxed charm. If you prefer a smoother finish, lightly iron your linen while it’s still damp using a medium heat setting. Be sure to iron on the reverse side to avoid any unwanted shine.

Storage: Store linen items in a cool, dry place. Avoid overcrowding your closet, as linen should have room to breathe. It’s best to fold linen items neatly or hang them in a way that avoids excessive wrinkling.

Fabric that’s Here to stay

Linen’s combination of natural beauty, breathability, and eco-friendly qualities makes it a fabric that’s here to stay. Not only does it offer comfort and style, but its sustainability adds to its appeal. Flax requires fewer pesticides and less water than other crops like cotton, making linen a great option for those looking to embrace more eco-conscious fashion choices.

Whether you’re adding a breezy linen dress to your summer wardrobe, upgrading your bedding, or simply indulging in the cool luxury of a linen scarf, this fabric will keep you looking and feeling good all year round!
