Ladies, I hope you’re hungry, because this issue is serving up one of our most flavorful editions yet! Welcome to the Foodie issue, a delicious celebration of creativity, community, and of course, cuisine. Whether you’re a seasoned kitchen queen or a takeout connoisseur, there’s something here to make your mouth water and your heart happy.
Let’s start with the cover. It’s not just a pretty picture. Our fabulous lead photographer Shanna Star cooked up a dreamy photoshoot concept where you and your friends can book your very own garden tea party. Think floral dresses, dainty desserts, and vintage teacups in a sun-dappled setting. It’s the kind of gathering that deserves to be framed — and now it can be. Honestly, the last time I got together with my besties for a photoshoot it was a blast … and also probably 20 years ago! It’s definitely time for a fresh shoot — good thing I know a girl *wink*!
For those with a taste for travel and a love of good food, we’ve got something very special. Longtime Pensacola locals Jo Rich and Marty Stanovich took us on a guided culinary tour of New Orleans, a city where every meal feels like a celebration. From Acme Oyster House oysters to Shaya’s Fried Chicken Hummus, they’ve mapped out a few must-visits and hidden gems for your next indulgent getaway. It’s the kind of armchair travel that might just have you booking a weekend trip.
But food isn’t the only thing we’re dishing out. In our Body Talk department, Jerry Drinkard, ARNP of Skin and Tonic introduces us to the latest skincare innovation,
especially if your skin is still recovering from winter’s chill.
And because we love a good sparkle, we’re featuring Midian Penberg and her newest jewelry venture, Small Sparks Inspired by everyday magic and unexpected beauty, her work reminds us to find the shimmer in the little things. It’s the perfect pick-me-up accessory — whether you’re running errands or raising a toast.
Oh, and don’t miss our newest department, 850 Foodie , featuring foodie expert Joanna Davis, who will be guiding us on a delicious tour of food-related topics around the Emerald Coast.
As always, we hope this issue feels like catching up with your smartest, most stylish (and slightly snack-obsessed) friend. Flip through at your own pace, savor the stories, and maybe even try something new — whether that’s a recipe, a restaurant, or a reminder to celebrate the good things in life.
We love curating each issue with you in mind, and this one was especially fun to create. Here’s to the flavors that connect us, the style that lights us up, and the stories that make us feel seen. Bon appétit!

Had your eye on a cute dress (or two) lately, but wondered where you could wear it? No worries, we’ve got you covered. How about a gardenthemed get-together with your favorite girlfriends? Yes, please! Tea parties are making a resurgence, and with it are the feminine fashion styles of flowy, and even puffy-sleeved, floral dresses. So go ahead and get that dress and read on for ideas on hosting your own spring garden tea party.
The outfits:
Looking for that perfect floral and flowy dress? Head over to Dillard’s to find the right one, and while you’re there, don’t forget the accessories like cute shoes, little ribbons and bows, fasteners, fans, parasols, earrings, necklaces, etc. Details can make all the difference.
The theme:
Pick a floral scheme to make it cohesive, but don’t be afraid to add in bold colors. Roses, mums, and hydrangeas in a variety of arrangement sizes will add pops throughout the party. Use them on a table, a bar cart, or even a welcome table. Then add in floral linen tablecloths for a polished and complete look. Photo Shoot Tip: Floral can be tough to find, but I found the perfect sheets to use as a tablecloth that looked fabulous!
For the rest of the decor, first take a trip around your home. Look for candles and holders, florals, petit four stands, plates, tea cups, etc. If you need more,
Location: Hilton Sandestin Beach

Dresses: Dillard’s Cordova + Dillard’s Panama City Beach
Models: Ashley Pigulski, Myah Sexton

you can always head to your local antique or thrift store for some beautiful but inexpensive pieces.
The menu:
Choose a light and fresh menu. Everyone loves a grazing table with meats, cheeses, fruit, and croissant sandwiches. Of course find some tea you want to share with the group and choose a couple to go with sandwiches and dessert! Photo shoot Tip: Our dessert was cute mini cupcakes from Sweet Henrietta’s. Sweet AND delicious!
Activities:
Fun activities would be a floral bouquet station or crownmaking table, which would provide beautiful guest takeaways. The bonus: It adds to the aesthetic! Oh, and don’t forget the music. A beautiful setting needs some tunes to set the tone.
The most important thing is to have fun while you’re hosting. Celebrating your unique style with good friends and fun conversation allows everyone to dress up and enjoy feeling beautiful.
And if you don’t want to host, we’ve got you! Davista Photography has a pictureperfect tea party set ready for you and your friends. Book it until July for the special only through Scarlett magazine.

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family inbetween. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them.
In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. These fearless women are that and more.
Chef+Owner, Knife’s Edge Catering and Café
Fort Walton Beach, FL
Carrie Knife’s journey from Rochester, New York, to Fort Walton Beach, Florida, has been one marked by love, purpose, and passion. After moving south in 1995, she married her best friend the following year on the sandy shores of Beasley Park and soon welcomed a son who would become one of her proudest accomplishments. But long before she began building a beautiful life on the Gulf Coast, Carrie’s foundation was shaped in the warmth of her childhood kitchen, side by side with her mother. The granddaughter of Polish immigrants, her mom was a phenomenal cook and baker who taught Carrie not just recipes, but the joy of gathering, giving, and nourishing others through food. Her mother’s diagnosis with primary progressive MS in 1986 deeply impacted the family, and especially Carrie, who was just in middle school at the time. That moment changed everything — but also lit the spark of strength and compassion that Carrie would carry forward into her life’s work.
Today, Carrie is the chef and owner of Knife’s Edge Catering and Café, a dream that became a reality in 2019 after more than two decades in the corporate world. Located at the Air Force Enlisted Village (AFEV) — her forever home since 1999 — Knife’s Edge isn’t just a café; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the woman who inspired it all. Several of her mom’s treasured recipes are served there, offering a daily reminder of love, tradition, and legacy. The AFEV community has become her extended family, now more than 600 strong, and Carrie takes great pride in creating food and events that bring joy and connection to
those around her. Her commitment to veterans runs deep, rooted in the service of her father, uncle, grandfather, and fatherin-law, all U.S. Navy veterans, along with her husband’s grandfather and great-grandfather. Serving the veteran community isn’t just a mission — it’s a calling.
Beyond her café, Carrie has long been a voice for causes close to her heart. She’s been an unwavering supporter of the National MS Society in honor of her mom, participating in five grueling 50-mile MS Challenge Walks, including one in Cape Cod to mark the fifth anniversary of her mother’s passing. She also served as a Walk MS Captain and continues to advocate for those living with MS. During her son’s school years, she was a dedicated PTO board member and president, always showing up, giving back, and helping lead with purpose. Carrie believes deeply in mentoring young women and has shared her story with Girl Scouts, theatre groups, STEM students, and girls in foster care. Her message is consistent and clear: “be confident and proud of what you have to offer our community. Leave a legacy that you and your family will always be proud of!”
Carrie’s best advice to her younger self: believe in yourself. And remember — you don’t have to do it alone. Graciously accept support from those who believe in you and your goals. Every step forward counts. YOUR dream is worth it! (And to buy stock in Microsoft and Google!)
And she’s living proof that it’s never too late to reinvent your path, embrace your passion, and build something meaningful. Since opening Knife’s Edge, Carrie has continued to give back to her community by participating in fundraising events such as the Destin Shrimp and Grits Festival to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Emerald Coast — every year since the inaugural event in 2020 — and the 3rd Annual Gumbo Cookoff to benefit The Junior League of the Emerald Coast. She is a proud supporter of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Department and OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity as well. Carrie truly has a heart to serve others and does it through her cooking.
She continues to honor her family’s legacy and hopes to inspire others to leave their own mark on the world — one they and their families can be proud of. For Carrie, success is not about attention or applause. It’s about quality, love, and the people you serve. And if you ask the community around her, she’s doing just that — with grace, grit, and a whole lot of heart.

Shanna Star Perret Owner + Photographer, Davista Photography Lead Photographer, Scarlett Panama City Beach, FL
photography by: Shanna Star
ShannaStar Perret’s journey from Goodhue, Minnesota, to Panama City Beach, Florida, has been one filled with purpose, heart, and a whole lot of courage. As Owner and Photographer for Davista Photography and Lead Photographer for Scarlett magazine, Shanna doesn’t just take beautiful pictures — she helps women feel seen, confident, and truly radiant. For her, it’s more than a job; it’s a calling to serve women by helping them recognize their own beauty and strength, often turning clients into lasting friends.
Her inspiration starts close to home. Raised by her mother, Starla, and deeply influenced by her grandmother, Corrine, Shanna was surrounded by strong, loving women who taught her about kindness, confidence, faith, and following your dreams — with a little sass for good measure. Starla, in particular, modeled positivity, especially when it came to body image and speaking kindly about herself and others. These early lessons helped shape Shanna’s own values and the way she now pours into her clients and community. She recalls church being the starting point of her passion for serving others, but over time, she found herself drawn even more to women’s communities — places where she can share the beauty she sees and offer love and encouragement to others right where they are.
Shanna’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She’s lived in five states, each move bringing new opportunities and lessons, not just in business but within herself. Every relocation meant rebuilding her photography business from the ground up, which came with uncertainty — but also immense personal and professional growth. She believes that the biggest expansion in her work has come from turning inward: through prayer, meditation, reading, and movement, she finds clarity, balance, and momentum. And in those moments of self-reflection, her business has always grown too.
Letting go of unfulfilling jobs and relationships had been one of her proudest accomplishments — alongside marrying her sweet husband, Matt. The two share a love for adventure and believe in sprinkling small joys into everyday life, from paddle boarding and biking to simply taking a midday walk in the sunshine. In working toward a balanced life, Shanna believes in recognizing her personal seasons — some for focus, some for rest — and creating a little flexibility throughout the day to support her well-being.
For Shanna, success is defined by freedom. It’s about building a business she’s passionate about that also gives her the flexibility to care for herself, spend time with loved ones, and live fully. While her definition of success continues to evolve, she feels deeply grateful each day to be doing what she loves, especially as she watches her podcast and photography business continue to grow.
Giving back is a priority for her future. She’s already led Bible studies and women’s groups, and she hopes to expand that impact with speaking engagements and leadership opportunities that support women in life and business. Through her work, Shanna aims to show that strength and softness can coexist. She’s a mix of tenderness and sarcasm, goal-setting and grace. She wants others to know that big dreams are possible — even if the path looks different than expected.
Her advice to her younger self, and to other women forging their path, is simple yet powerful: Be stubborn about your dreams, but stay flexible in how you get there. Life will throw surprises, some hard, some beautiful, but often it all leads to something bigger and better than you ever imagined. With her heart wide open and her camera in hand, Shanna continues to walk that path — rooted in faith, driven by love, and ready for whatever comes next.

Chef/Restaurateur, Agapi Bistro + Garden
Pensacola, FL
Gus Silivos has long been a cornerstone of the Pensacola culinary scene, bringing his passion and expertise to the community through decades of dedication. A third-generation restaurateur, he grew up immersed in the family business, learning firsthand the nuances of hospitality and the hard work required to run a successful establishment. His journey has been one of growth, mentorship, and influence, shaping the local food industry in profound ways.
As a celebrated chef and restaurateur, Gus has been an integral part of the culinary evolution in Pensacola. Through his involvement with the Restaurant and Chef’s Associations, he has helped drive change, elevating the city’s dining landscape. His contributions extend beyond the kitchen; he played a pivotal role in establishing the Culinary Program at Pensacola State College, ensuring that future generations of chefs have access to quality education and training. Many of those he has mentored have gone on to become successful entrepreneurs, executive chefs, and restaurateurs in their own right, a testament to his lasting impact on the industry.
Despite his many accomplishments, Gus remains committed to learning and growing. He believes in taking the time to gain a broader knowledge of the industry, always striving to refine his craft and stay ahead of culinary trends. His dedication extends beyond professional aspirations — his biggest inspirations come from his family, particularly his children and his grandmother, who played a significant role in shaping his values and approach to cooking.
One of the most exciting manifestations of his passion for food and community is Agapi Bistro + Garden, a restaurant that represents the culmination of his greatest loves: a love of food, a love of cooking, a love of togetherness, and a love of the Pensacola community. Agapi is a place where dishes come from the heart. Every ingredient is sourced with as much care as the dishes themselves, utilizing the local bounty of sustainable seafood, meats, and produce whenever possible. Agapi Bistro + Garden embodies
the warmth and connection that Gus has always valued, creating a space where people can gather and enjoy thoughtfully prepared meals that celebrate the region’s flavors.
In addition to his work in restaurants, Gus is a part of the local “Celebrity Chefs” program, further solidifying his role as a leader in the community. His commitment to mentoring and supporting others remains unwavering, and he plans to continue giving back in any way he can. Whether through hands-on guidance, industry advocacy, or simply sharing his wealth of experience, he remains a guiding force for aspiring chefs and restaurateurs in Pensacola.

isn’t just something you wear — it’s a reflection of who you are, the moments you cherish, and the connections you hold close. At Small Sparks, these sentiments are taken to heart, creating permanent jewelry that’s as stylish as it is meaningful.
I’m Midian Penberg, the creator behind Small Sparks, a woman-owned jewelry brand based in Pensacola, Florida. As a permanent makeup artist and esthetician, I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of fine details.
Small Sparks is my way of bringing that love for craftsmanship into the world of jewelry — creating custom, claspless pieces designed to be worn every day, effortlessly. No hassle — just beautiful, high-quality metal welded together to fit you perfectly.
What’s Permanent Jewelry?
Imagine a piece of jewelry that’s tailor-made just for you — sized to your wrist, ankle, neck, or finger, then painlessly welded on for a seamless fit. That’s what you can experience at Small Sparks. Whether you’re looking for a bracelet, anklet, necklace, chain ring, hand chain, waist chain, permanent bangle, or cuff, it can be created just for you.
Small Sparks only uses hypoallergenic, high-quality metals, including:
• .925 Sterling Silver
• Gold-Filled (20% 14k gold over base metal)
• Solid 14k Gold (coming 2025 in white & yellow gold!)
The process is quick and fun: you pick your chain, it is then sized to fit, and with one little spark, it’s yours to keep. Want to add a charm? Go for it! Every piece is designed to be as unique as you are.
And if you ever need to take it off? No worries — just snip the jump ring with pliers or scissors. You can always come back to have it reattached or even add a clasp if you’d rather switch things up.
Small Sparks is all about celebrating connections — whether it’s a solo treat-yourself moment, a friendship bracelet with your bestie, or a keepsake for a big milestone. Pop-up events are regularly held throughout Pensacola, often in collaboration with other small businesses to bring this experience to the community.
Want to make it even more special? Book a private party! Permanent Jewelry is a memorable addition for bachelorette parties, birthdays, bridal showers, or just a fun night in with friends. written by: Jerry Drinkard, APRN, Family Nurse Practitioner, Co-Owner of Skin and Tonic Med Spa
As a Family Nurse Practitioner with over 30 years of nursing experience and 17 years of practicing aesthetic medicine, I have seen many advances in the field of non-invasive cosmetic treatments. One of the most exciting innovations I’ve encountered in recent years is the Neogen PSR plasma device, a cutting-edge technology that’s changing the way we approach antiaging, skin rejuvenation, and overall skin health. My husband, Dr. Chris Croley, and I are proud to offer this state-of-the-art treatment at our med spa, Skin and Tonic, located in Pace, Florida. We are the only clinic in the Florida Panhandle to offer the Neogen PSR device, and its benefits have exceeded our expectations.
The Neogen PSR device uses plasma energy to target the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting cellular turnover. This innovative technology combines the precision of plasma with the healing benefits of light energy. During treatment, the device emits a series of micropulses of plasma, which gently heat the skin, creating controlled, micro-injuries that trigger the body’s natural healing response. This process is known as plasma skin regeneration or PSR.
Unlike more invasive procedures, the Neogen PSR device offers an effective yet minimally disruptive treatment for a variety of skin concerns, with minimal downtime and noticeable, long-lasting results.
One of the standout benefits of the Neogen PSR device is its ability to significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around delicate areas like the eyes and mouth. As we age, the skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, two vital proteins that keep our skin firm and youthful. The Neogen PSR helps to boost collagen production, essentially “reversing” some of the visible effects of aging by tightening the skin and improving elasticity. What makes this treatment so beneficial is its ability to provide long-term results. The plasma energy stimulates collagen remodeling, which means the improvements you see are not just temporary but continue to improve over the course of several months. For those looking to combat the signs of aging without resorting to surgery, the Neogen PSR offers an excellent non-invasive alternative.
As someone who has spent decades treating patients, I know how challenging it can be to deal with the effects of sun damage, including hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone. The Neogen PSR device is remarkably effective at addressing these common skin concerns. Plasma energy targets areas of damaged skin, stimulating the production of healthy skin cells and breaking down excess pigment. Over time, this leads to a more even skin tone, with a noticeable reduction in sunspots and pigmentation caused by UV exposure.
For many patients, this means they no longer need to rely on daily concealers or heavy makeup to cover blemishes and discoloration. The Neogen PSR helps to restore a natural glow and radiance to the skin that was once lost due to sun exposure.
Another significant advantage of the Neogen PSR is its ability to improve skin texture. As we age, skin texture can become rough, uneven, or porous, which contributes to a dull and tired appearance. The treatment encourages skin regeneration, leading to smoother, more refined skin. After a series of treatments, patients often experience a reduction in enlarged pores, as well as an improvement in overall skin tone and texture.
At Skin and Tonic, Dr. Chris and I are passionate about offering the latest, most effective treatments to our patients. We are proud to bring this cutting-edge technology to our community. With our combined expertise in aesthetic medicine and patient care, we ensure each treatment is personalized to meet the unique needs of our clients, whether they’re looking to reduce the signs of aging, correct skin imperfections, or achieve a youthful, glowing complexion.
If you’re looking for a way to rejuvenate your skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve sun-damaged skin, or simply refresh your appearance, the Neogen PSR plasma device could be the solution you’ve been seeking.
At Skin and Tonic, we’re committed to helping you look and feel your best. Come experience the transformative power of plasma technology today and start your journey toward healthier, more youthful skin.
Crispy, golden, and dusted in cinnamon sugar, churros have delighted sweet tooths for centuries. Though often associated with Spanish and Latin American cuisine, their origins are widely debated. Some historians trace them back to Spanish shepherds, who crafted the fried dough snack in the mountains as a portable alternative to fresh bread. Others believe Portuguese sailors brought a similar pastry from China’s youtiao (fried dough sticks), which later evolved into the star-shaped churros we know today.
By the 16th century, churros had spread across Spain and Latin America, becoming a beloved street food. They were often paired with rich, velvety chocolate for dipping — a tradition still popular in Spain, particularly in Madrid’s historic churrerías. Today, churros are enjoyed worldwide, from Mexican street markets to state fairs in the U.S., with countless variations and creative fillings.
Now, you can bring the magic of churros to your own kitchen with this easy homemade recipe!
1 cup water
2 ½ tbsp sugar
½ tsp salt
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 cup all-purpose four
1 large egg
½ tsp vanilla extract
Vegetable oil (for frying) ½ cup sugar + 1 tsp cinnamon (for coating)
1. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, salt, and butter. Bring to a boil.
2. Remove from heat and stir in four until dough forms. Let cool slightly.
3. Add egg and vanilla, mixing until smooth.
4. Transfer dough to a piping bag with a star tip.
5. Heat oil to 375°F. Pipe 4-inch strips into hot oil, frying until golden (about 2 minutes per side).
6. Drain on paper towels and toss in cinnamon sugar.

She is known in Pensacola, Forida, as “The Princess of Palafox” — a business owner and entrepreneur, award-winning makeup artist, fashion and social influencer, and energetic community servant. He’s the President and CEO of a nonprofit that stretches from Mobile, Alabama, to Panama City, Florida — a former college professor, radio personality, and golf professional who is also the Town Crier for Pensacola Mardi Gras and emcees dozens of nonprofit events annually. And beyond a deep love for one another, Jo Rich and Marty Stanovich share a passion for good food, great music, and culturally significant travel, which is what landed them in a city that is very well known for all of those things — New Orleans, Louisiana.
Below, the couple takes us on a foodie trip to some of the best restaurants in the famous city with a few recommendations on which menu items are some of their favs!
Acme Oyster House
724 Iberville Street, French Quarter
Bon Ton Prime Rib
401 Magazine Street, Central Business District
Tableau
616 St. Peter Street, French Quarter on Jackson Square Shaya 4213 Magazine Street, Lower Garden District
Birdy’s Behind the Bower 1320 Magazine Street, Lower Garden District
There’s no place quite like the original Acme Oyster House. Here Marty and Jo would recommend, of course, the oysters (chargrilled for Marty and raw for Jo). Not only are the oysters massive, all the dishes come in huge portions, the service is fantastic, and the atmosphere is so fun. It’s no wonder there’s always a line at the front door!
The third-oldest restaurant in New Orleans, Bon Ton Prime Rib, that is actually on its third iteration of its lifespan, steals the show for its unique presentation of the Cajun Bacon appetizer. It consists of four massive slabs, perfectly seasoned and cooked three different times and ways, and comes out of the oven hot and sizzling. Foodie pro tip from Marty and Jo: Do it — and then split a perfectly cooked prime rib!
Dickie Brennan is a legendary restaurateur in New Orleans who currently operates multiple restaurants in and around the French Quarter. One of those is Tableau, which has the best sunset view from its second-floor balcony overlooking Jackson Square. The menu features a wide variety of options to suit every taste, all centered around fresh Gulf seafood. Make sure you save room for dessert, though. The Crème
Brûlée boasts a full plate of perfect caramelization, wide and shallow, savory and sweet with a powdered sugar topping perfectly balanced and ready to share.
Far away from Bourbon Street and part of the John Besh New Orleans restaurant empire is Shaya, a restaurant that serves Levantine food at its finest. Here you can enjoy refined Salatim (small plates such as Moussaka, Ikra, and Baba Ganoush) followed by fabulous hummus selections featuring Wild Mushroom and Lamb Ragu. You must try the pièce de résistance, though, which is a gluten-free Fried Chicken Hummus, accompanied with a Date Salsa Verde and bathed in Tunisian Spices and Aleppo Pepper. It really is unlike anything else you’ve ever tasted — a Southern staple with Middle Eastern magnificence.
For brunch, it is hard to beat Birdy’s Behind the Bower. This little spot is tucked away in the Lower Garden District and has great coffee and lattes, fantastic service, and a light, fresh, and diverse menu. Ask for the Birdy’s table (super cute) or sit on the lunch patio and share a brunch board. Need a heartier dish? The Huevos Rancheros are magnifico — and not a caloric disaster (like they usually are).

Hi there! I’m Bridget Guest, parttime manager and full-time single mother to three incredible sons. In 2019, I was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, but that has not stopped me from nurturing the wig community. After losing my own hair and struggling to find the right wig, I recognized a gap in the community for compassionate, personalized hair loss solutions. With Destin Wigs, my goal is to transform the experience into something welcoming and uplifting, offering hope to those navigating similar challenges.
Hairloss can be a challenging experience for many individuals, affecting not only their appearance but also their self-esteem and confidence. Whether caused by medical conditions, genetics, or environmental factors, hair loss is a COMMON issue that impacts millions worldwide. For those seeking solutions, wigs and toppers offer a versatile and effective way to regain a sense of normalcy and style.
Wigs have definitely come full circle, bringing a variety of options that can be tailored for each individual. The short, synthetic grey wigs that your grandma would tease every Sunday morning before church may still be an option, but synthetic and human hair wigs can be as glamorous or subtle according to your desire.
Options for coverage include a full wig, to a topper, top individual pieces, or extensions.
Toppers have been gaining momentum over the past few years as an excellent transitional piece for someone who is not quite ready to commit to a full wig. A topper is a hairpiece that can be clipped into your hair, or bonded by glue, with different size bases, and different density options depending upon the thinning area that needs coverage or to add fullness to one’s existing hair.
Alongside toppers, there are other endless hairpiece options that are available that can work as bang additions or ponytails: short, long, straight, or curly. Whether it’s a bun addition or a new full wig, your choices are tailored to meet your needs. These options are available in synthetic or 100% human hair. The goal of any new hair addition is to have the most natural look. Hairpieces and wigs can be cut and styled by a stylist. Human hairpieces can even be colored to match your existing hair. It is important to seek out a professional who is confident working with synthetic or human hairpieces.
Wigs can be a transformative solution for individuals experiencing hair loss. They offer a wide array of options that allow wearers to express themselves and regain confidence. Whether choosing a synthetic or human hair wig, the factors involved in selection and care can help ensure the best experience. For many, wigs not only provide a physical cover but also restore a sense of identity and empowerment.
Hello! I’m Joanna Davis, resident Foodie expert — a lifelong lover of delicious bites and local gems. Born into a Filipino family where food was a cherished love language, meals were more than just nourishment — they were connection, celebration, and culture. From becoming a Yelp Elite to launching a successful foodfocused Instagram page, I now have over 50,000 followers and have judged food festivals, dined across the Emerald Coast, and supported countless small businesses from Pensacola to Destin.
Mylove for food began in 1979, being born to a Filipino mom. Growing up, my mother doted on me with food, and I can still remember how she would carefully watch my reaction as I took a bite of her delicious homemade meals. It brought her so much joy when I asked for seconds (and sometimes even thirds), and she would beam with pride.
It wasn’t until my 30s, during a visit to the motherland, that I learned food is a love language in Filipino culture. For Filipinos, food is a way of life — whether it’s how they socialize with neighbors, celebrate with a feast (and insist you take leftovers home), or provide for their family by selling food on the street. Food is a powerful symbol of identity in Filipino culture.
Now in my 40s, my mom has since proclaimed her retirement from cooking. These days, I find joy in exploring our local fare and sharing those foodie adventures with the woman who helped instill this love in me.
The evolution of social media over the last decade sparked my curiosity for exploring restaurant cuisine. During my fitness era, I discovered the Yelp app. At the time, I was prepping for fitness competitions, and my strict, regimented diet left the pleasure centers of my brain completely deprived. I would spend hours mindlessly scrolling through food photos on Yelp, mentally planning my post-competition celebration meal.
After the competitions, I would often rebound and binge on food like an addict succumbing to withdrawals. Eventually, I embraced the foodie lifestyle, becoming a Yelp Elite and writing reviews to share my restaurant experiences.
I also became active in local Facebook food groups, but I grew frustrated with the “trolls” and “Karens” who seemed more interested in bashing restaurants than supporting them. As a 30year local, I was passionate about seeing our food community thrive.
One day during COVID, as restaurants were beginning to reopen, I randomly decided to start a food-focused Instagram account. At the time, I didn’t even know there was an audience for food content on the platform. I started by sharing photos of dishes from my favorite restaurants, and before I knew it, my audience began to grow.
Five years later, with 50,000 followers, I’ve had the pleasure of judging numerous food festivals, being hosted by hundreds of restaurants from Pensacola to Destin, making new foodie friends, and going on countless date nights with my spouse.
These days, the sheer number of requests I receive to spotlight small businesses can feel overwhelming — but it’s truly an unexpected blessing to be able to share the best foods and restaurants in the 850.

Delicate, romantic, and endlessly versatile, lace fabric has been a fashion favorite for centuries. Whether it’s adding a touch of vintage charm to a dress, elevating lingerie with intricate patterns, or gracing wedding gowns with ethereal beauty, lace is the ultimate blend of sophistication and femininity. But have you ever wondered how lace is made, what makes it so special, or how to care for this delicate fabric? Let’s unravel the mystery behind one of the most elegant textiles in fashion.
Lace has a fascinating history, dating back to the 16th century when it was painstakingly handmade with needles or bobbins. Early lace was a true luxury, often reserved for royalty and aristocrats who adorned their garments with elaborate, handwoven designs. Today, lace can be machine-made, making it more accessible, but handmade lace — especially from places like France and Belgium — remains a highly prized art form.
Lace is created using a variety of techniques, including:
Needle Lace: Made by hand with fine threads and a needle, creating intricate, openwork patterns.
Bobbin Lace: Uses multiple threads wound around bobbins and carefully woven together on a lace pillow.
Crochet & Knitted Lace: Made with hooks or knitting needles for a softer, more flexible feel.
Machine Lace: Mass-produced but still stunning, offering a variety of patterns and textures.
Regardless of the method, lace is a testament to craftsmanship, with each design showcasing intricate details that elevate any outfit.
Lace is one of the most versatile fabrics, making its way into nearly every aspect of fashion and decor. From classic black lace to bold, colorful variations, this fabric can be sweet, sultry, or sophisticated — making it a must-have in any wardrobe. Here are just a few ways lace works its magic:
Bridal & Evening Wear: A staple in wedding dress design, from delicate overlays to full lace gowns, this fabric defines romance.

Lingerie & Intimates: Lace is synonymous with luxury in lingerie, adding a delicate yet sultry appeal to everything from bras to bodysuits.
Casual & Street Style: Lace isn’t just for special occasions — lace tops, dresses, and skirts bring elegance to everyday outfits, whether paired with denim or layered over simple basics.
Home Decor: Lace curtains, tablecloths, and bedding add a vintage, romantic feel to any space, giving homes a soft, timeless charm.
Lace may look delicate, but with the right care, it can last for years. Here’s how to keep it looking flawless:
Washing: Always check the label first! For most lace, hand washing in cold water with a mild detergent is the safest option. If machine washing, use a mesh laundry bag and the gentlest cycle possible.
Drying: Lay lace flat on a towel to air dry. Never wring or twist, as this can damage the intricate patterns.
Ironing: Use a low-heat setting and place a cloth between the iron and the lace to avoid scorching. A steamer is even better for preserving delicate details.
Storage: Store lace garments in a cool, dry place, folded with tissue paper to prevent snags or stretching.
Lace has stood the test of time, proving that delicate doesn’t mean weak — it means timeless. Whether you’re wearing it for a special occasion, incorporating it into your everyday wardrobe, or adding a touch of charm to your home, lace brings an effortless beauty that never goes out of style. So go ahead — embrace the lace!

I was working in my classroom three years ago on a teacher-work day, I was suddenly overcome with an idea. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and immediately jumped into action. That idea is now Bashes & Bubbly My vision was to create elevated celebrations where guests could simply show up and enjoy — without having to plan, set up, or lift a finger. What began as a creative passion quickly transformed into a thriving business specializing in luxury party décor for vacation rentals and more along the Emerald Coast. We are all about crafting one-of-a-kind parties that make every guest feel like they’re stepping into a celebration tailored just for them!
Growing up on the Emerald Coast, I’ve spent my life celebrating everything from beachside birthdays on 30a to bachelorette weekends in Destin. I know firsthand how special this area is for making memories, which is why I created Bashes & Bubbly. Whether it’s a luxury balloon backdrop, custom-branded apparel and party swag, charcuterie spreads, gourmet sugar cookies, or even grocery stocking for your rental, we handle every detail so you can simply arrive and celebrate — stress free.
A significant part of our success lies in our ability to offer a full-service experience. We don’t just drop off decorations — we set everything up, ensuring each detail is perfect before the guests arrive. From custom balloon
installations and personalized signage to themed table settings and photo backdrops, no two events are ever the same.
While intimate vacation rental setups are one facet of Bashes & Bubbly, we have also expanded to offer full-scale event decorations for larger gatherings. From corporate galas to weddings and vow renewals, we bring the same attention to detail and creative vision to large events as we do to smaller celebrations.
In the past year, we’ve had the honor of working on incredible large-scale events, including decorating for the Blue Angels’ ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ holiday party at the National Naval Aviation Museum and the prestigious Woman of the Year Awards for Scarlett Magazine. These events challenged us to dream even bigger, curating immersive designs that transformed each venue. As part of our growth, we are constantly expanding our rental inventory to offer our clients a wider range of high-end décor options.
Beyond the décor, I’m passionate about supporting other local businesses and creating experiences that highlight the best of the Gulf Coast. All of our clients receive a guide that showcases local vendors like private chefs, beach bonfire companies, boat charters, and more. By collaborating with other small businesses, I’m able to offer clients insider access to the best experiences while boosting the local economy.
Building Bashes & Bubbly from the ground up has been a whirlwind, but the journey has been worth every moment. One of the most rewarding aspects is the personal connection I build with each client. I’m not just creating party décor; I’m helping people celebrate some of the happiest moments of their lives, with a side of bubbly, of course!
To learn more about Bashes & Bubbly or to book your next celebration, visit bashesandbubbly.com and find us on all social media platforms. Let us help you toast to life’s best moments!

Smoothies are a perfect blend of refreshment, flavor, and nutrition — ideal for kicking off your day or giving you that afternoon boost. The best part? Smoothies are endlessly customizable, which means you can create a blend that suits your taste buds and dietary needs. Here, we’ve crafted three irresistible smoothie recipes that balance fruity, creamy, and even chocolatey flavors. Take these recipes as a starting point and customize them to create your own perfect smoothie!
Let’s start with a classic: the Berry Bliss Smoothie. Berries are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins, which means they’re perfect for a morning pick-meup or a post-workout refresher. This smoothie is a deep, vibrant purple color, bursting with flavors from strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. The addition of Greek yogurt makes it creamy and adds a dose of protein to keep you full for longer.
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- ½ cup Greek yogurt
- 1 banana
- 1 cup almond milk (or any milk of your choice)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds (for an extra fber boost)
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
Experiment with liquids : Almond milk, coconut water, and oat milk all bring their own unique flavors to a smoothie. Try a few different ones to find your favorite!
Freeze your fruits : Using frozen fruits gives your smoothie a thick, frosty texture without the need for ice, which can water down the flavor.
Balance your flavors : If your smoothie is too tart, add a little honey, maple syrup, or even a date or two for natural sweetness. If it’s too thick, a splash of extra liquid should do the trick!
If you’re someone who wants to sneak in a serving of greens without tasting them, the Tropical Green Smoothie is your go-to! Spinach and kale are nutrient powerhouses, loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, but their flavors are so mild that the tropical fruits easily mask any “green” taste. Mango and pineapple bring in natural sweetness and a hint of tartness, making this smoothie feel like a mini tropical vacation.
- 1 cup fresh spinach (or kale, if you prefer)
- ½ cup frozen pineapple chunks
- ½ cup frozen mango chunks
- 1 cup coconut water (or regular water)
- ½ avocado (for creaminess and healthy fats)
- Juice of ½ lime
- Optional: 1 scoop vanilla protein powder for added protein
For those of us who crave something sweet and a little indulgent, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie tastes like dessert in a glass — but it’s still packed with healthy ingredients! This smoothie is an excellent source of protein and healthy fats, making it ideal as a breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon treat that satisfies your sweet tooth without the sugar crash.
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter (or any nut butter)
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup almond milk (or milk of your choice)
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (optional, for an extra protein punch)
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (if you prefer it a bit sweeter)
