I think I’ll start this issue out by giving a big “Congratulations” to our 2024 Woman of the Year, Kathleen Hensley! Each year during our WOTY Award Ceremony, I try to take a moment (somewhere between the delicious food — thanks to the team at The Island Resort, the entertainment — I’m looking at you Joshua Sirten, and the top-notch swag — Jo Rich Beauty bringing that full-size glam!) to appreciate what an incredible experience it is to be in a room full of exceptionally capable, accomplished, and deserving women.

And for me, an even more incredible feeling, is realizing that I’ve had the absolute good fortune to build meaningful relationships with many of these women, having the opportunity to see first hand just how amazing they are in action. But while our 100-category WOTY winners are without a doubt the best of the best (as voted by you!), they aren’t the only ones that deserve a little appreciation. Which brings me to our Wellness issue, where we focus on actionable ways to acknowledge, appreciate, and support the women in our community … including ourselves. Women like Alana, Ashlee, and Robin, who have served our country, and like Cameron, who has broken barriers and thrived with a true team of supporters. You can read more about each of these remarkable ladies in this issue, along with other articles including Personal Growth , Emotional Detox , and Be the Change highlighting the Destin Woman’s Club.

So for all the women in your life that need a “wellness check” … make a phone call, write a letter, schedule a girls’ day. Because we’re all stronger together.

At Scarlett , we love bringing you the latest in women’s fashion, beauty, home decor, lifestyle, and health. Thank you all so much for the support as we start our fourth year of Scarlett . with Special Guest Writer Tiffany Orner

Tiffany Orner is a two-time military spouse, a mother to three wonderful children, and a PROUD Air Force veteran. She is third generation military, second generation Air Force veteran. She is also, in her own words, “one hell of a work in progress.”

PSA: I am not a collegiate scholar on all things military, but I do thoroughly know my shit. My thoughts are my own, and I am not speaking on behalf of any nonprofit business or organization. I’m here to be the advocate for others that I wish would have been available to me both during and after my service to our country.

HeyFam! I’m back, and this time, I’ve got some friends with me — military ones (shocker). In this edition, we’re diving deep into the topic of wellness. For us, the military community, past and present, wellness is more than just a buzzword; it’s a constant, often daily, struggle. Shit’s difficult.

So, guess what? I’m thinking ahead a little to put out there that May is Military Appreciation Month. Some of us probably didn’t even realize it was a thing, right? But before we dive into what May means to some of my fellow military peeps here in the Panhandle, let’s get a bit of history. According to the Association of the United States Army, “In 1999, Congress expanded National Military Appreciation Week into a month-long celebration, officially designating May as Military Appreciation Month. This decision allowed for a more extended period of appreciation and recognition of the military’s service and sacrifices.” Right … I mean, I definitely can’t tell.

We, as a nation, can’t truly speak about wellness in the context of the World’s Greatest Military until we understand one thing: being mindful of America’s military, aka Military Appreciation Month, should NOT be compressed into just one month. This needs to stop.

Our military numbers are alarmingly low. Back in the day when I served, the United States Air Force boasted over 680,000 strong. Today, America’s Air Force has just over 320,000 Airmen. That’s a deficit of over 350,000, and it feels like no one cares. And that’s just one branch. You won’t see a headline about that, though. We’re too worried about Katt and Taylor and watching Griselda and whatever else they tell us to focus on. What is happening?

Let me tell you, writing this article has been a challenge because I feel it deeply. I can’t quite define it or predict precisely what’s going to happen or when, but as a nation, we need to stop being so easily redirected and distracted. We must start taking care of our active duty, guardsmen, reservists, veterans, and their immediate families. I’m not claiming we’re better than anyone else, but if things go south, who’s going to defend America? It’s the folks I just mentioned, without hesitation. We’ll lace up our boots, pack our gear, and fall in.

So over the next few pages, read through some of the questions I have posed for my peeps, and then sit with their answers. I challenge YOU to do better. Be more intentional about how YOU support us beyond the “Thank You For Your Service” or “Thank You For Your Sacrifice.” Instead, step up. Do the work. What are YOU passionate about? Then, channel that passion in our direction.

Love dogs? Well, we deploy A LOT here in the Panhandle, and there’s a genuine need for dog sitters. Enjoy the outdoors? So do we! Reach out to some 1st Sergeants and see if you can help get our junior enlisted out of the dorms and onto the Gulf. Love helping children? Our military spouses running in-home family child care would LOVE some gift cards for children’s clothing, to local grocers, or diaper donations.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Always.

Okay, I’m wrapping this up. For now, that’s it. Standby, dear readers, because this Air Force veteran is determined to change the way this community supports its military members, both past and present. Y’all ready?!

Being Mindful

photography by: Shanna Star models: designer clothes: Dillard's Cordova Mall location: The Island Resort

How does Military Appreciation Month resonate with your personal experiences as a veteran? Can you share a specific moment or memory that underscores its significance to you?

"I believe in year-round recognition of our military, especially during Military Appreciation Month, to strengthen patriotism and honor sacrifices. Preserving our military history is a fundamental duty, and as a female aviator veteran, I deeply appreciate the trailblazing women who paved the way for my journey and opened up the cockpit for me to be able to fly."

How does Military Appreciation Month address the crucial issue of mental health among veterans? What initiatives have you found most beneficial?

"Military Appreciation Month sheds light on the critical issue of mental health among veterans by fostering awareness and support through initiatives such as mental health awareness campaigns, peer support programs, and most importantly honest personal testimonies from brave veterans willing to share their struggles and highlight their victories."

In your role as a veteran advocate, what are the primary objectives you aim to achieve during Military Appreciation Month?

"As a veteran advocate during Military Appreciation Month, my primary objectives include raising awareness about veterans' challenges and advocating for supportive policies. I aim to express gratitude, educate the public, and foster inclusivity while connecting veterans with resources and promoting their contributions."

In what ways does Military Appreciation Month contribute to the strengthening of support systems for veterans? Are there any gaps that still need to be addressed?

"Military Appreciation Month strengthens support for veterans through awareness and community engagement. While it fosters gratitude, existing gaps, especially in mental health and diverse needs, necessitate ongoing efforts for improved support infrastructure."

Looking forward, how do you envision the evolution of Military Appreciation Month? What legacy would you like it to leave for future generations of veterans?

"Looking ahead, I envision Military Appreciation Month evolving to encompass even broader awareness and support for veterans. I hope it leaves a legacy of sustained gratitude, increased understanding, and enduring commitment to addressing the evolving needs of future generations of veterans."

Ashlee Olbricht Coast Guard

How does Military Appreciation Month resonate with your personal experiences as a veteran? Can you share a specific moment or memory that underscores its significance to you?

"S adly, I didn't even know there was a Military Appreciation Month. I only knew about Veterans Day and Memorial Day. When I moved to Florida about two years ago my father, a Vietnam veteran, and I stopped to get something to eat and a mother and son came up to us and thanked us for our service. The young man shook both of our hands. When we got done and asked for the tab the waitress told us our tab was taken care of by the lady."

How does Military Appreciation Month address the crucial issue of mental health among veterans? What initiatives have you found most beneficial?

"Mental Health is a tricky subject because we are all different for what is the best solution to fight our demons. The most common fix is pills. That might be the right answer for some people, but it might bring on more issues like it did for me. I was on medication for 6 months, and the dosage kept getting bumped higher. I didn’t like the way it made me feel numb and told my therapist I was done taking pills. The things that have worked best for me have been going to the gym on a regular basis, pretty much daily, and getting together with other veterans sharing our experiences knowing we will not be judged or looked at differently."

Looking forward, how do you envision the evolution of Military Appreciation Month? What legacy would you like it to leave for future generations of veterans?

"I am unsure of how I envision just a month to appreciate our service members that sign a check payable up to our lives to defend Americans' freedom. Maybe I’m being selfish being a 3rd generation combat veteran, but I feel that every day Americans are free they should appreciate the military."

Greg Lambert Army

How does Military Appreciation Month resonate with your personal experiences as a veteran? Can you share a specific moment or memory that underscores its significance to you?

" I feel as if it helps show us how much the community cares. I know I have experienced a time when I believe I was not worthy of the “veteran” title, and it wasn’t until I was able to share my experience with a civilian that she gently told me that I mattered and still did much more than any civilian volunteered to do. No one has shown me quite that much clarity since then, and I try my best to relay that same message to my fellow veterans when they feel they are also not worthy enough."

How does Military Appreciation Month address the crucial issue of mental health among veterans? What initiatives have you found most beneficial?

"Mental health among veterans is still such a taboo topic, and it is truly such a tough obstacle to overcome with discussing it. The VA and veterans have started taking on a more holistic and alternative approach to their mental and physical health and this has made an impact. Talk therapy is not a bad thing, but most veterans don’t just want to chitchat with someone they feel is labeling them. Alternative approaches with fellow veterans where we can control the environment have had a lot of success. The biggest thing missing — funding. These programs need great funding so veterans don’t have to come out of pocket hundreds of dollars a month in order to gain mental stability."

Looking forward, how do you envision the evolution of Military Appreciation Month? What legacy would you like it to leave for future generations of veterans?

" We currently focus too much on communication and marketing just within the military community. I would love to see it grow by involving the civilians around us more so that we can have better accountability and make sure they understand what this month really means to us. Telling our brothers and sisters isn’t going to get us very far, we need the help and experiences of the outside community to really transform this month into something better. I would love nothing more than to be remembered for my dedication to awareness. I want to be known for having taken action in order to better the lives of veterans, not just during Military Appreciation month."

How does Military Appreciation Month resonate with your personal experiences as a veteran?

Looking forward, how do you envision the evolution of Military Appreciation Month?

"I honestly did NOT know that there was a Military Appreciation Month so I don’t know what it is meant to mean. Part of my life's purpose is to promote unifying love. It’s ALL about love. I appreciate, love, and serve others with intention all the time. And it starts with building relationships with ALL of my brothers and sisters regardless of designation or affiliation. I was not BORN military, but my service provided an opportunity for me to BECOME more. Distance between myself and others was created by confusing my role with my authentic identity. This is a ubiquitous HUMAN issue. It is so hard to learn who you are and what your life’s mission is while struggling under the weight of who you are SUPPOSED to be. I would love to see Military Appreciation Month facilitate conversations in the community that focus on our shared authentic experiences that organically flow into how our unique American journeys served us in life. I believe true appreciation manifests from this."

Why did you start Kombat Kookie and what is it all about?

"In addition to producing exceptional, glutenfriendly cookies and muffins, Kombat Kookie is a labor of boundless love. A doorway to share personal experiences of hope and true healing of the mind, body, spirit, and, most importantly, the heart of the combat veteran from one of their own. I am a 100% service-disabled combat veteran. Most people cannot tell on sight, but for nearly 19 years, I have had an intimate relationship with unrelenting pain levels that would hospitalize most. Throughout my journey, I have been introduced to, and immersed myself in learning about, holistic healing modalities that are not well known (i.e. hyperbaric oxygen therapy). Kombat Kookie has been a way to not only help fund what can be expensive, but necessary, treatments — but also share healing experiences that have changed our lives."

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them.

In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. These fearless women are that and more.

photography by: Cindy Mills Photography Therese Ruiz Ritchie Regional RN Resource Manager, AIDS Healthcare Foundation Pensacola, FL

Therese Ruiz Ritchie was born to Justo and Lourdes

Ruiz at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1967. Her father was serving in the U.S. Navy at the time, having immigrated to America from the Philippines in 1955. The Ruiz family didn’t stay in Hawaii long, with several moves ahead as part of the military life, including a brief stay in Long Island, New York. But in 1972, shortly before Therese was to start kindergarten, the family arrived in Pensacola, Florida, where Justo would retire from the Navy after 20 years of service and begin a second 20-year career with Gulf Power as an accountant.

Pensacola is where Therese considers her hometown. She has fond memories growing up in the area and attending Montclair Elementary, Brentwood Middle, and Pensacola High School, graduating in 1985. After marrying a Navy officer at the age of 20, Therese began moving around the country herself, spending most of those early years in Brunswick, Maine, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Titusville, Florida. In 2013, more than 25 years after leaving, Therese returned to Pensacola to settle down in civilian life with her current husband, David Ritchie. They now reside in Pensacola’s East Hill neighborhood.

Over a 35-year career in nursing, Therese worked in a variety of leadership positions ranging from hospitals to private practices to corporate settings to nonprofits. She discovered early on that she needed to be in a position of leadership in order to create positive change. She earned both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and later a Master of Science in Management to prepare herself for those roles. Her work spanned labor and delivery, cardiology, ambulatory surgery, and legal nurse consulting.

Since returning to Pensacola, Therese worked as a Clinic Manager, Associate Director of Student Health Services, Ambulatory Surgery Center Manager, and in several roles with AIDS Healthcare Foundation where she currently serves as Regional RN Resource Manager. This position involves training and educating Community Health Workers to help underserved patients access care and overcome barriers often related to poverty and homelessness. Therese loves working for the organization because it provides cutting-edge medicine regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

Therese credits her broad exposure to different people and cultures for shaping her ethos of respect for all, regardless of circumstance. She points to her immigrant parents as setting the foundation, and her 15 years raising a family in the diverse melting pot of New Orleans as reinforcing this inclusive worldview. Throughout her career in healthcare, she has advocated for patients and championed quality standards of care and ethical business practices. She finds her greatest fulfillment comes through service to others.

From a young age, Therese was involved in service activities ranging from church youth groups to cultural groups to high school clubs, usually taking on leadership

roles. She attributes this to the example set by her parents, who provided assistance to family members immigrating from the Philippines, who were plugged into the Pensacola community, and showed compassion to those in need.

When asked what advice she would give her 20-yearold self, Therese reflected on marrying and starting her career and family at a young age. She said to embrace what life brings you, but don’t let life just happen to you. Be intentional about what you want and take steps to achieve it. She added lightheartedly to take more pictures because those babies will be grown before you know it!

Therese is most proud of the kindness and empathy she sees in her children and grandchildren, saying that in times of division, children give us hope for the future. The biggest female influence in her life was her mother, who taught her the importance of faith and family, instilled a love of music, supported her education, and modeled strength as a Navy wife.

In Pensacola, Therese has been involved with Health & Hope Clinic, providing healthcare to the uninsured. She still supports them financially and as a former board member. Since 2020, she has contributed to Impact 100, which awards grants to local nonprofits, and joined the Krewe of SWAT, enabling her to support dozens of charities. She now serves on the board of Arc Gateway, which assists those with developmental disabilities. In the future, she hopes to contribute to solutions for affordable housing in Pensacola.

Therese’s leadership style focuses on urgency of action over lengthy analysis — as she frequently says, “get to it and do it.” She believes problems are opportunities needing a breakthrough. By helping those under her tutelage unlock critical thinking skills and adopt an actionbased attitude, she has helped many colleagues advance their education and careers. Therese continues to hear from former co-workers about their ongoing success, which she considers an honor to have played a role in. Her life has been one of service to others, making a difference wherever she goes.

Born to what she affectionately describes as a “large, loud, and loving family in a small town in Brazil,” Angela Rissi now calls the beautiful city of Miramar Beach her home. After 15 years of co-owning her former countertop business in Santa Rosa Beach, she decided to open a new countertop business of her own, Phoenix Surfaces, which serves Walton and Okaloosa counties.

When asked about how she became the woman she is today, Angela thoughtfully replies, “Honestly, I could say that I’m working toward becoming her. It comes from lots of battles and conquests. It comes from falling and getting back up. It comes from the fears that push me to be brave in the face of any obstacle. It comes from believing everything in life has its purpose and that it’s up to me to learn from each of life’s lessons. It comes from the tears of sadness that turn into tears of joy. It comes from waking up every day and trying to be a better person than the previous day. It also comes from believing that it’s up to one to make the choice to be joyful, happier. Even though I am a ‘project in construction,’ I am proud of the woman that I am today. When I say proud, I am not being boastful, not at all; I found that it is ok to be proud of oneself for any and all accomplishments. I learned that one needs to validate oneself instead of waiting for validation from others. Especially in this era where lots of people are forgetting who they are.”

What drives and inspires Angela to give back to the community is the warm, happy feeling she gets from

helping those in need. She loves connecting with, and bringing together, people of all backgrounds and showing them respect and kindness.

Given the chance to give advice to her 20-year-old self, Angela would say, “I would love to tell her, ‘You are stronger than you imagine. For this reason, never give up on your dreams. Never give up on believing that despite everything, life is beautiful.’ I’d also want to tell her to stop being too hard on herself when she makes mistakes and never to lose joy over anyone or anything. After all, we learn from the mistakes we make! ‘Never stop believing in humanity and believe in yourself. You are not on this alone. God will always be with you.’”

While Angela’s proudest accomplishment is yet to come professionally, opening her business Phoenix Surfaces is one of her biggest achievements so far. However, her proudest accomplishment as a mother has been raising her two sons, Vinny and Felipe, into amazing human beings.

Angela’s biggest female influence was her late mother, Maria, who exemplified strength, empathy, kindness, and faith. She taught Angela invaluable lessons and morals, showed her that faith and honest work can help conquer the world, and modeled resilience. Angela tries to live her life mirroring her mother’s virtues.

Giving back to the community has always been a part of Angela’s life, and she plans to continue that calling, saying, “I’ve always liked being involved in volunteer work, both directly and indirectly. In my adolescence, I participated in youth groups that did community outreach. When I lived in Massachusetts, I spent twelve years being actively involved in the Brazilian community in Worcester. I also volunteered my time at the American Red Cross! I really like making myself useful to those in need. That’s why now I help the group Fratenidade Pobres de Jesus Cristo (The Poor of Jesus Christ Fraternity.) They are a group of Franciscan nuns and friars based out of Brazil who dedicate their lives to helping the less fortunate. They have missions all over, including in Alabama, Atlanta, Kansas, New York, and Los Angeles — the latter of which they go out and help unhoused folks who live on Skid Row. In the next five years, I sincerely hope to help them on missions in Africa, Guatemala, and even Chile. I also have a small nonprofit organization in my hometown of Teixeira de Freitas, in Brazil. I strongly believe that we are put on this Earth to help each other.”

Tori

Jones-Cook is a pillar of the Pensacola, Florida, culinary community. Along with her husband, Eli, she co-owns two popular local eateries — Sauce Boss Burger Co. and the newly opened Deli Dudes. Through these ventures, Tori has become ingrained in Pensacola’s vibrant food scene. She loves meeting new people and supporting fellow businesses.

Each month, Sauce Boss collaborates on a specialty Burger of the Month with a different local chef or restaurant. This provides exciting new options for customers, while also promoting talented individuals in Tori’s network. She feels fortunate to uplift and showcase others in this way.

Tori’s path has involved some obstacles, but she has persevered and continues to grow. In her early 20s, she experienced setbacks but learned important lessons through “a lot of trial and error to say the least.” As Tori puts it, “Without a doubt, I feel that I am still becoming the woman I want to be. I have received so much incredible advice from other professionals, the people that love me, and from my family.” And one of those important lessons is prioritizing self-love and protecting her peace. Now in her late 20s, Tori is excited to keep developing into the best version of herself. Whenever she doubts, she reminds herself how proud young Tori would be of the successful woman she’s become.

A key influence was Tori’s first post-college boss, Maureen Bierman. Maureen showed Tori what community leadership looks like. Her grace and guidance inspired Tori to always give back. To this day, Tori is thankful for the example Maureen provided.

If she could advise her 20-year-old self, Tori would say, “Stop caring so much about what others think, keep your empathy but protect your energy, and strive to be the truest version of yourself no matter what!”

A major personal accomplishment was Tori purchasing her own house at just 21 through hard work and savings. Professionally, she is proudest of helping open the second Sauce Boss location in downtown Pensacola. The partnership with owners Chris, Kathy, and Rob makes that area better.

Tori’s biggest female role model is her mother, Robin Jones. After serving 27 years in the Navy and raising three kids, Robin embodies strength, independence, and “doing it all.” She taught Tori to be a graceful, classy woman. Robin’s warmth and attitude continue inspiring Tori daily.

Giving back is crucial for Tori. Currently, Sauce Boss partners with the Feed the Hungry program. In the next five years, Tori wants to expand this relationship. She also supports other businesses through collaborations and intentionally frequenting local spots. Small choices by individuals to buy local make a big difference.

Under Tori’s caring leadership, the Sauce Boss team has flourished. She provides a loving, supportive environment where people can grow personally and professionally. Tori mentors each employee and celebrates their accomplishments, big and small. Her humble, cheerleading approach fosters an uplifting workplace culture.

At just 27 years old, Tori Jones-Cook has already made her mark on Pensacola through entrepreneurship and community involvement. However, she is just getting started. Driven by passion and armed with the lessons of her mentors, Tori plans to continue reaching new heights while lifting up those around her.

Margaret Hoffman was born in Poland but has called the small town of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, home for more than ten years now. “It is a wonderful town with great people and a lot of history,” Margaret says. The historic downtown area is where Margaret’s eclectic shop, Vault 46, is located. She’s an artist who paints and makes jewelry that she sells in her shop alongside a widerange selection of items for the home, heart, and soul.

Margaret jokingly says, “I’ve always been a bit stubborn” — a trait that has helped shape the determined woman she is today. The idea of opening a shop was first conceived as a way to keep busy, but over the years it has become so much more. She believes everything happens for a reason — including the shop! It was simply meant to be and has led her to meet many fascinating people and make a positive impact. “I’ve met super interesting people. I have found joy in sharing time and interest with my customers, and with their help a chance to support nonprofit organizations. I’ve always been interested in giving back where I can, so I’m constantly looking to support organizations doing great work in the community. In the past I’ve sponsored events and donated to local causes, and I look forward to continuing to do so in the future.”

Margaret’s biggest female influence is her wise, strong, and intelligent daughter who knows her self-worth and never settles for less. Margaret aspires to have her daughter’s confidence and character, saying, “She is an old soul. I want to be like her when I grow up!”

Looking back, Margaret would advise her 20-year-old self to live life to the fullest, as if there is no tomorrow. It took some time, but Margaret now embodies this philosophy. She enjoys every moment, whether painting a new piece for the shop, chatting with a customer, or wandering the historic streets she calls home. Margaret appreciates the little things and sees the beauty everywhere. “I love living in DeFuniak Springs, my customers; and I love what I do.”

When she isn’t running the shop, Margaret can often be found volunteering with local charities like the Council on Aging or Habitat for Humanity. She enjoys giving back whenever possible and supporting the closeknit community that welcomed her more than a decade ago.

Delayna Leigh Blankenship

Retired Air Trafc Controller, Federal Aviation Administration Pace,

Delayna Leigh Blankenship is a force to be reckoned with – a true trailblazer who has carved her own path in life with unwavering determination and a passion for giving back to her community. Born in Austin, Texas, Delayna spent 20 years living on the picturesque Blackwater Bay on Garçon Point before moving to Pace in 2020.

For 27 years, Delayna served as an Air Traffic Controller in the Federal Aviation Administration, with her last 15 years spent at the Pensacola TRACON. But her journey didn’t stop there. In 2018, she embarked on a new adventure, becoming a Professional Real Estate Investor in the local area by establishing Green Between LLC, a name derived from an Air Traffic term.

Delayna’s roots run deep, stemming from a long line of strong Texas women. Her grandmothers were Rosie the Riveters, and she grew into her own as an Honors Engineering Major at The University of Texas, where she was one of only five women out of 500 freshmen. It was during this time that she learned a valuable lesson – not to be sensitive in a male-dominated field but to embrace it with humor and confidence.

Her journey as an Air Traffic Controller was equally challenging, but Delayna thrived on the energy and excitement of the job. As one of four women out of nearly 40 men at her first facility in New Orleans, she was determined to prove her worth.

“For you to be considered these guys’ equal, you will need to be as good as all of them, and better than most,” her

supervisor told her. And prove herself she did, kicking ass and flying planes “like you stole it.”

Delayna’s resilience and determination have extended far beyond her professional life. She enrolled herself, her daughter, Alexandra, and their Doberman, Annie, in Therapy Dog Training, bringing joy and comfort to those in need. Her favorite moments include a WWII veteran’s delight in petting Annie and helping a dog bite victim overcome their trauma.

But Delayna’s true passion lies in giving back to her community. She stumbled upon IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area and was immediately drawn to their mission. Three years later, she was honored with a seat on the Board of Directors, where she currently serves as the Membership Co-Chair for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Additionally, she is a member of the philanthropic Krewe of SWAT, further solidifying her commitment to making a difference.

Delayna’s greatest accomplishments, however, lie in her role as a formative influence on her children, Will and Alexandra, and her step-daughter, Kelly. She beams with pride as she watches them grow into amazing, successful, and kind young adults.

Looking ahead, Delayna’s future is as bright as her spirit. As the incoming Membership Chair for 2025 and 2026, she eagerly anticipates the opportunity to serve her community through IMPACT 100. She will continue her involvement with Krewe of SWAT, and her unwavering support for local nonprofits will remain steadfast.

In Delayna’s own words, “Go big or go home.” This chapter of her life is a grand adventure, and she embraces it wholeheartedly, lifting up those around her, especially women, and helping them discover skills they never knew they had. As her close friend Anissa Ottley aptly put it, “Your natural talent is to connect people and lift them up... Your guidance is always positive and fun, good things happen when people are around you… like winning at bingo.”

A.2 Few Good Men.4

Men — can’t live with them, can’t live without them. But luckily we’ve found a few good men! Leaders, mentors, partners, gentlemen. There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Gulf Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path. These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond. It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

TimJackson’s musical journey began in the hometown of his youth. Raised in south Alabama, Tim grew up next door to the base player of Roy Orbison and the Candymen. Their example inspired Tim to pursue his own career in music from an early age. Now, Tim has established himself as a renowned singer, songwriter, talent buyer, and concert promoter in the Florida Panhandle.

Based in Defuniak Springs, Florida, Tim is a pillar of his community. He regularly performs and produces shows at the historic Chautauqua Hall Theater bringing live entertainment to local families and music lovers. Tim’s vocals, guitar work, and energetic performing style delight audiences of all ages. But his catalog of heartfelt original songs has also earned him critical acclaim.

When asked about the key to his success, Tim credits the support he’s received over the years. He advises his 20-year-old self to keep working toward his dreams, saying, “Never doubt yourself.” He also acknowledges that his accomplishments are not his alone. His proudest moments have been sharing the stage with talented young artists who later achieved successful music careers themselves.

Above all, Tim attributes his positive outlook to the influential women in his life. He singles out his mother, herself an accomplished vocalist, for setting an example

of respect and perseverance. Tim also expresses immense gratitude for his amazing wife and children who inspire him daily.

While Tim continues to enjoy performing, he has also expanded his focus to concert promotion. His production company books high-quality acts for venues across the southeastern United States. Tim calls this more than 15year endeavor his greatest professional achievement thus far. Through both his own music and his promoter work, Tim takes pride in bringing family entertainment to his community.

When he looks to the future, Tim plans to keep following his passion. There are always great new artists to mentor and introduce to audiences hungry for live music. Tim aims to keep doing what he loves: writing songs, hitting the stage, and working behind the scenes to boost emerging talent.

Tim has covered a lot of musical ground from his Alabama roots to headlining Florida shows today. But through it all, his connection to community and gift for performing remain strong. Tim brings joy through music, and locals hope this generous spirit keeps the sounds coming for years to come. Wherever his notes lead next is sure to keep inspiring audiences and artists alike.

Chief

Ofcer, HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital Destin, FL

ZachMcCluskey’s path to becoming a hospital Chief Executive Officer began in the emergency room and on ambulances, where he developed his deep passion for caring for others. After working as a critical care nurse and paramedic, Zach found he could make an even greater impact on patient care in healthcare administration. Today, Zach serves as the CEO of HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital.

Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Zach now calls Destin, Florida, home. In addition to leading the hospital, he stays connected to the community through board roles with the Northwest Florida State College Foundation, Destin Chamber of Commerce, and Virginia Commonwealth University Foundation. He also mentors graduate students at his alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth University’s Master of Health Administration Program.

Zach attributes his community involvement to the fulfillment he gets from caring for people, being part of a team, and leadership. As a former nurse and paramedic working with critically ill children, he built meaningful relationships with his young patients and their families. Zach gets the same fulfillment as a CEO spending time with patients and ensuring his hospital provides excellent care to the tri-county area.

Leading his team of diverse professionals is also a passion of Zach’s. He says it’s incredible to see people from various backgrounds unite around patient care. His role as a leader is to help the staff and hospital grow to their full potential.

If he could give his 20-yearold self advice, Zach would tell him to get as many unique experiences as possible and develop healthy habits, as life will only get more hectic. He’d also advise his younger self to nurture relationships that provide lifelong support.

Zach counts creating a loving family with his wife, Amanda, and their three daughters as his proudest personal accomplishment. Professionally, he’s most proud of leading his team through the COVID-19 pandemic and providing vital care to the community.

According to Zach, choosing the most influential woman in his life is difficult, as more than 70% of his healthcare colleagues are female. He has had the opportunity to work with many amazing female leaders and clinicians who have helped shape his career. However, his wife inspires him the most through her tireless advocacy for marginalized groups.

Giving back through mentorship and providing scholarships for first-generation and underrepresented students are just a few of Zach’s passions. He recognizes the importance of paying forward the mentoring he received early in his career.

In turn, Zach continues to guide healthcare leaders who frequently call on him for advice years after leaving their positions. He strives to provide the same lifelong support to rising leaders that he gained, and continues to gain, from his own mentors. After a lifetime of caring for others, Zach McCluskey continues to lead by example.

Mitchell Whitehead grew up in the small town of Cottondale, Florida, before making his way down to the Gulf Coast city of Pensacola, where he currently resides. As a physician specializing in family medicine and HIV care, Mitchell has become an invaluable resource for the community. His passion for helping others stems from his time growing up with strong female role models like his mother, Jackie, and grandmother, Jewell, who instilled in him the importance of integrity, hard work, and compassion.

After graduating from medical school at Florida State University, Mitchell was excited to move back to the Florida Panhandle and serve the community he now calls home. Some of his best memories were made thanks to the kindness of the late Norman Ricks and his husband, David, who warmly welcomed Mitchell and his partner to Pensacola. They inspired him to become more involved with local organizations and causes.

Over the years, Mitchell has helped provide care to thousands of patients as their personal physician. He takes pride in managing chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, so his patients can live healthier lives. He also serves on the board of the Pensacola Little Theatre, indulging his lifelong passion for the arts. Local nonprofit Sunday’s Child is another cause close to his heart that he faithfully supports.

Last year, one of Mitchell’s proudest accomplishments was helping open a new clinic with an incredible team. The process challenged him in new ways, but knowing the clinic will provide quality care to more people makes the effort worthwhile. He is always pushing himself to grow and open up more possibilities for his patients.

When asked what advice he would give his 20-year-old self, Mitchell said, “It is ok to stop and be still at times. And life is too short, drink the expensive stuff.” This balance between

He plans to continue expanding HIV specialty care to make treatments more accessible, educating and mentoring the next generation of physicians, and most importantly, to keep providing the very best care possible to all his patients. Lessons in Chemistry

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.

Grandpacore

Fashion

| Thread Count
www.ScarlettMag.com

Move over Coastal Grandma, there's a new relaxed fashion movement in town — Grandpacore! This laidback style embraces comfy silhouettes, natural fabrics, and muted color palettes reminiscent of, you guessed it, grandpa!

So what exactly is Grandpacore? At its core (no pun intended!), it's about dressing for maximum comfort and ease rather than making a bold fashion statement. The hallmarks of the look include oversized cardigans, baggy chinos or trousers, collared shirts often worn open over a T-shirt, sweater vests, casual blazers, pleated pants, and slip-on shoes like loafers or slippers.

Natural, earthy tones like olive, navy, gray, tan, and brown dominate the Grandpacore color palette. Plaids, polka dots, argyle, and classic stripes also make frequent appearances. Fabrics tend toward soft cottons, wools, corduroy, and cashmere with some linen thrown in for breathability.

When it comes to silhouettes, it's all about the slouch. Oversized fits, dropped shoulders, and boxy shapes characterize Grandpacore. Details like elbow patches, cardigan sweaters, and high-waisted pants add to the grandfatherly vibe. Accessories like glasses with thick dark frames, newsboy caps, and fabric sneakers complete the look.

So why is this laidback, grandpa-esque style having a major moment right now? After years of increasingly casual work and social dress codes, Grandpacore feels like both the nostalgic and natural next step in comfort-focused fashion. The oversized silhouettes and neutrally-toned pieces effortlessly straddle the line between smart casual and weekend wear.

Grandpacore also fits with larger cultural shifts toward disengaging from fast fashion and embracing slow, intentional dressing again. Buying well-made pieces in standard fits from brands focused on ethical production lets you build up a personalized capsule wardrobe that will last years if cared for properly.

The beauty of Grandpacore is its inclusiveness and adaptability across ages, body types, and genders. Simply mix and match a few key pieces like an oversized cardigan, pleated trousers, Oxford shirt, and loafers to nail the grandpa vibe while still feeling like your authentic self.

inspired pieces, you'll be rocking the Grandpacore trend in no time. Just don't forget to add in a few personal touches to complete the look!

Both women and men can lean into Grandpacore with very little differences. For women, an oversized cashmere sweater layered over a turtleneck top, floaty midi skirt, and flats makes for a comfortable daytime look. And men can create the look by sporting a cable knit sweater with a collared shirt, relaxed chinos, and leather shoes. And the oversized nature of the style makes it prime for layering during colder months.

So embrace the cozy grandpa energy this season! Be on the lookout for oversized cardigans, sweater vests, collared shirts, pleated pants, and classic prints. With some relaxed vintage-

Navigating a Low Appraisal

with Special Guest Writer

Jessica Duncan

61 Tour of Homes Pensacola |

As a Realtor, I understand that selling your home involves numerous complexities, one of which may be encountering a low appraisal. When the appraised value of your home falls short of expectations, it can be disheartening. However, with my guidance and expertise, you can successfully navigate this challenge. In this article, I’ll outline how I, as your Realtor, can assist you when a house you are selling does not appraise as expected.

Expert Assessment: As your Realtor, I provide a comprehensive analysis of the situation, offering insights into why the appraisal may have come in lower than anticipated. Drawing on my experience and knowledge of the local market, I help you understand the factors influencing the appraisal outcome.

Thorough Review of Comparables: I meticulously review the comparable sales used by the appraiser to assess your home’s value. By carefully examining these comparables,

I can identify any discrepancies or inaccuracies and determine whether they accurately reflect your home’s unique features, condition, and location.

Strategic Response: In cases where the appraisal seems unjustified, I work with you to develop a strategic response. This may involve conducting a thorough review of the appraisal report to identify any potential errors or inaccuracies. For example, appraisers are human too, and simple mistakes in factors such as square footage, land size, or property condition can significantly impact the

valuation. By carefully scrutinizing the appraisal report, we can pinpoint any areas that may have been overlooked or misrepresented and provide the appraiser with accurate information to ensure a fair assessment of your home’s value. Additionally, I collaborate with you to gather supporting documentation, such as recent upgrades or comparable sales data, to strengthen our case and advocate for a more favorable appraisal outcome. With a strategic and proactive approach, we can work toward achieving a fair and accurate valuation for your property.

www.ScarlettMag.com

Negotiation Expertise: Should the appraisal come in lower than the agreed-upon purchase price, I leverage my negotiation skills to find a mutually beneficial solution with the buyer. This may entail renegotiating the purchase price, exploring alternative financing options, or identifying creative solutions to bridge the appraisal gap.

Exploring Alternatives: If reaching a resolution with the buyer proves challenging, I help you explore alternative options. This may include relisting the property, adjusting marketing strategies to attract new buyers, or considering other selling approaches tailored to the current market conditions.

Emotional Support: Dealing with a low appraisal can be emotionally taxing for sellers. As your Realtor, I provide not only professional guidance but also emotional support throughout the process. I offer reassurance, perspective, and a steady hand to help you navigate this unexpected turn in the selling journey.

Personal

| Mental Health

We all want to be the best versions of ourselves, but it can be hard to find the time and motivation for personal growth amidst our busy lives. Investing in yourself, however, is one of the most rewarding things you can do. When you make an effort to expand your knowledge, skills, and experiences, you open yourself up to new possibilities and give yourself the chance to thrive.

One of the best ways to invest in personal growth is through learning. Seek out opportunities to gain new skills and knowledge. Take a class that sparks your interest, whether it's a cooking course, photography workshop, or coding bootcamp. Not only will you pick up practical abilities, you'll also connect with like-minded people. Learning keeps our minds sharp and expands our perspectives. It builds confidence as we gain competencies. Even just 15 minutes a day listening to educational podcasts or reading inspiring books can nurture our growth.

In addition to structured learning, be open to gaining wisdom from unexpected sources. Travel somewhere new and observe how others live — or watch a documentary on a different culture. Have conversations with people whose experiences differ from yours. Immerse yourself in nature and reflect. There are lessons all around us if we pay

69

attention. Curiosity and an open mind will uncover insights that books alone can't provide.

Growing emotionally and spiritually is also essential for full personal development. Practices like meditation, journaling, and yoga can help us tune into our inner selves. They teach us to listen to our intuition and sit with discomfort mindfully. Developing emotional intelligence allows us to manage stress, understand our needs, and show compassion toward others. We all have room to improve how we relate to ourselves and the world around us.

While expanding your knowledge and experiences is crucial, also make time

for enjoyment and relaxation. Personal growth shouldn't mean running yourself ragged. Take breaks, get enough sleep, and make self-care a priority. Build in activities that spark creativity and joy, whether it's painting, dancing, or playing with your pet. Make memories with loved ones. Laughter and fun help us recharge so we can continue to learn and expand.

Ultimately, the goal of personal growth is to create a life of greater fulfillment, meaning, and purpose. Investing in yourself leads to benefits that ripple outward to those around you. As we develop into our best selves, we have more wisdom to share and openness to connecting authentically.

We become role models and mentors. The journey of growth lasts our entire lives, bringing new gifts at every stage if we choose to nurture it.

There will always be more to learn, experience, and improve. While personal growth requires dedicating precious time and energy, it is one of the most rewarding investments you can make. The effort you put into developing yourself will pay off exponentially in the long run. Be patient with yourself, celebrate small wins, and trust that even slow progress is moving you toward a life of deeper meaning and joy. Your journey awaits, ladies!

As a practice that has been in use for more than 2,000 years, acupuncture has emerged as a time-tested therapy that not only addresses physical ailments but also nurtures the mind and spirit. This ancient practice, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, goes beyond the surface, offering a holistic experience that can be transformative for those seeking balance in their lives.

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. While the idea of needles might raise eyebrows, the experience is far from what one might expect. The needles used in acupuncture are ultrafine, and the process is virtually painless. In fact, many describe the sensation as a subtle tingling or warmth, often accompanied by a deep sense of relaxation.

The concept of acupuncture lies in the belief that the body is a network of interconnected pathways, known as meridians, through which vital energy, or Qi (pronounced chee), flows. It is proposed that when there is a disruption or imbalance in the flow of Qi, it can lead to various physical and emotional issues. Acupuncture aims to restore harmony by stimulating specific points along these meridians, promoting the smooth flow of energy and facilitating the body's natural healing processes.

One of the key principles of acupuncture is the concept of yin and yang — the balance between opposing forces. In the context of health, yin and yang represent the delicate equilibrium between the body's functions. Acupuncture seeks to harmonize these forces, addressing both the symptoms and the underlying causes of imbalances.

The potential benefits of acupuncture are extensive, touching upon a wide range of physical and mental health concerns. From alleviating chronic pain conditions such as back pain, migraines, and arthritis to reducing stress, anxiety, and insomnia, acupuncture offers a holistic approach to well-being. Moreover, it has shown promising results for many in supporting fertility, boosting the immune system, and even aiding in the management of conditions like allergies and digestive disorders.

Contrary to common misconception, acupuncture is not a onesize-fits-all solution. Each session is tailored to the individual, taking into account their unique constitution, lifestyle, and specific health concerns. This personalized approach ensures that the treatment addresses the root causes of imbalances rather than merely alleviating symptoms.

The holistic nature of acupuncture extends beyond the physical realm to encompass emotional and spiritual well-being. Many recipients of acupuncture report a heightened sense of awareness, mental clarity, and emotional resilience. This mind-body connection is a testament to the holistic philosophy that underpins acupuncture — treating the whole person rather than isolated symptoms. So, if you find yourself on a quest for balance and vitality, consider the ancient practice of acupuncture, embracing the interconnected harmony of mind, body, and spirit.

No Sugar

Ladies, Are You Ready to Take the “30-Day No Sugar Challenge”?

We’re here to motivate you to take on what could be one of the most rewarding health challenges — cutting sugar from your diet for 30 days. I know, it sounds daunting. Sugar is in practically everything, and it tastes oh-so-good. But I’m here to tell you that with some preparation, support, and willpower, you CAN do this — and you’ll feel fantastic!

Here’s why you should give the no sugar challenge a shot: studies show that even a short sugar detox can help

www.ScarlettMag.com
| 30-Day Challenge

regulate blood glucose levels, curb cravings, boost energy, support weight loss, and improve overall health. Even just 30 days without the sweet stuff can set you on the path for better well-being.

So how do you start? First, get prepared. If you really want to get serious about the challenge, go through your kitchen and read labels to identify sneaky sources of added sugars. Out they go! Next, stock up on tasty sugar-free snacks like nuts, Greek yogurt, fruit, veggies, hummus, etc. Plan out meals and post the no sugar challenge somewhere visible like your calendar or fridge to serve as your daily motivation.

Lean on friends, join an online community for tips and encouragement, or post with #30DayScarlett to see who else is toughing it out! When a craving hits, distract yourself by getting active or sipping herbal tea. Be kind to yourself if you slip up, and get right back on track.

With some determination, preparation, and patience with yourself, you’ve got this! I can’t wait for you to cruise through 30 days and feel amazing. And hey, if 30 days is just too much to start with, try a week — it’s not a competition. No, it won’t always be easy. But yes, it will absolutely be worth it! Now who’s ready to kick sugar’s butt? Let’s do this!

Boiled Egg

Boiled eggs make for a simple, nutritious, and versatile snack or meal component. But boiling eggs can be tricky — it’s easy to end up with tough, rubbery whites and overcooked yolks. Follow these tips to learn how to boil eggs to sheer perfection every time.

Start with eggs that have been refrigerated. Cold eggs are less likely to crack when they hit the boiling water. Letting them sit out too long leads to expanded air pockets inside the shell. Gently lower eggs into simmering water using a spoon or ladle. Dropping them in carelessly can also cause cracking. The water should be hot but not rapidly boiling. Just a few small bubbles breaking the surface is ideal.

Use enough water to fully cover the eggs. Having too little water means uneven cooking. The eggs should have ample room to move freely without bumping into each other.

Set a timer for the target cook time. For soft-cooked eggs with runny yolks, go for just 6 minutes. Increase to 8 minutes for set whites and fudgy yolks. Go up to 10-12 minutes for fully hard-cooked eggs.

When time is up, promptly drain off the hot water and run cold water over the eggs. This halts the cooking process. Let them sit in the cold water for a few minutes.

Give eggs a few good taps on the counter before peeling. This helps separate the membranes from the shell. Peel starting at the wider end, going around the circumference to lift off the shell.

Store peeled hard-cooked eggs in the fridge submerged in cold water. They’ll stay fresh for about a week. The water prevents the eggs from absorbing fridge odors and the fridge from smelling like eggs.

Now that you know how to properly boil eggs, let your creativity run wild. Slice them up for egg salad sandwiches. Top salads or toast with them, or even make deviled eggs. The simple boiled egg is endlessly versatile!

Emotional

Let’s face it ladies, we all have bad days where negative emotions seem to take over. Anger, hurt, anxiety, and sadness creep up and can end up weighing us down. When the down moments start piling up, it may be time for an emotional detox. An emotional detox is all about clearing out the repressed negative emotions that have built up inside you and hitting the reset button on your feelings so you can regain a sense of inner balance and peace.

The first step in an emotional detox is tuning into what exactly you're feeling. Emotions arise quickly and can be confusing, so slowing down to identify them takes practice. Notice where you feel tension in your body, as that can often point to an underlying emotion. For example, knots in your stomach may signal anxiety, while tightness in your chest could indicate anger or hurt — everyone is different, but learning to listen to your body is key. You can also pay attention to your thought patterns and behaviors, as racing thoughts, irritability, and avoidance behaviors stem from emotions begging to be addressed. Ask yourself — are your thoughts spiraling, hopeless, angry? Are you lashing out more or avoiding things that normally make you happy? These clues give insight into your inner emotional state.

Once you identify the primary difficult emotions impacting you, you can start the detox process by giving yourself permission to fully experience the emotions rather than suppress them. Allow yourself to cry, scream into a pillow, or rip up all those cardboard boxes you have stacked in the garage from deliveries — anything that provides emotional release. Cathartic activities can be especially helpful here. Go for a brisk walk or run to let pent-up frustrations out. Try dance, yoga, painting, gardening, or boxing to channel anger

and anxiety into productive physical outlets. Let your body move and express itself in ways that feel good. Getting the turbulent emotions out in a vigorous way allows you to reset. Talking things through with a close friend or keeping a feelings journal can also provide that same release of airing out painful emotions so they don't fester inside.

Once you’ve cleared the buildup of negative emotions, establishing healthy daily habits keeps your emotional state balanced and peaceful going forward. Maintaining inner peace takes consistent work — the efforts you put in daily, through a regular self-care routine, create that detoxed, refreshed state. Be sure to block out time for stress-relieving activities that make you feel good, whether it's brisk walks, bubble baths, athome spa moments, or meditation. Treat yourself to nutritious, whole food meals and try to cut out inflammatory stimulants like caffeine. Aim for 7-8 hours of restorative sleep per night to allow your body plenty of time to rest and refresh. Practicing gratitude, self-love, and positive affirmations also lift your spirits after an emotional cleanse. Look yourself in the mirror and repeat empowering mantras about your inherent worth … even if you don’t believe it’s there, trust me babe, it’s there.

And remember, if just the thought of working through all of this is adding to your stress, seeking professional help can be a great way to get started on your detox journey so your naturally peaceful state can shine through. By continually tuning into your emotions, releasing them constructively when they feel overwhelming, and doubling down on healthy daily habits, you’ll have a head start to maintaining that clean, refreshed emotional state.

A Facial for your what?!

Avajacial, short for vaginal facial, is a spa treatment specifically designed to rejuvenate and pamper the skin in and around the intimate area. Much like a facial for your face, a vajacial targets the delicate skin of the vulva to address issues such as ingrown hairs, irritation, and discoloration. This holistic approach to intimate care combines exfoliation, cleansing, and moisturizing techniques to leave you feeling refreshed and confident.

Contrary to popular belief, vajacials are not just for those prepping for a special occasion or a romantic getaway. Any woman looking to enhance her overall intimate wellness can benefit from this spa experience. Whether you shave, wax, or go au naturel, a vajacial can help alleviate common concerns associated with hair removal, such as ingrown hairs and redness.

Additionally, women experiencing hormonal changes, like those during pregnancy or menopause, may find relief from dryness and discomfort with the hydrating elements of a vajacial. It's a versatile treatment that caters to a wide range of needs, so if you're curious about taking your self-care routine to the next level, a vajacial might be just the thing for you.

Now that you're intrigued, let's dive into what you can expect during a vajacial. The process typically begins with a gentle cleanse to remove any impurities from the skin. Next comes exfoliation — a crucial step to slough off dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs. The exfoliation process is tailored to the delicate nature of the intimate area, ensuring a smooth and irritation-free experience.

Following exfoliation, a soothing mask is applied to nourish and hydrate the skin. The ingredients in these masks are carefully chosen to address specific concerns, whether it's calming inflammation or promoting collagen production. Some spas even offer customized options, allowing you to tailor the treatment to your unique needs.

The final steps involve moisturizing and sometimes a gentle body massage, leaving you feeling not only physically rejuvenated but also mentally relaxed. Many women report increased confidence and a heightened sense of body positivity after a vajacial, emphasizing the holistic benefits of this intimate spa experience.

With self-care treatments finally taking a front row seat as part of our routines, it's no surprise that the concept has extended to the most intimate areas of our bodies. Vajacials offer a unique and pampering experience that goes beyond aesthetic concerns, promoting overall well-being and confidence.

Whether you're a seasoned spa enthusiast or a newcomer to the world of intimate care, consider adding a vajacial to your self-care repertoire. After all, when it comes to self-love, every inch of you deserves a little extra attention, babe!

6 large egg yolks

¾ cup granulated sugar

½ cup fresh lemon juice

⅛ tsp salt

½ cup unsalted butter, cut into 8 pieces

2 tbsp lemon zest

1. Whisk egg yolks, sugar, lemon juice, and salt in a non-reactive medium-sized saucepan (see note) until well-combined.

2. Transfer to stovetop over low/medium-low heat and add butter and lemon zest.

3. Cook, stirring constantly (do not let the curd boil) until thickened. It should coat the back of a spoon. You could also use an instant read thermometer to check that the curd reaches 160°F.

4. Remove from heat and pour through a fine mesh strainer into a heat-proof bowl.

5. Cover with plastic wrap touching the surface of the lemon curd to avoid a skin forming. Allow to cool to room temperature for 20-30 minutes, then transfer to the refrigerator or divide into serving jars. Chill for several hours then use as desired.

Note: You must use a non-reactive pan like stainless steel, glass, or enameled cast iron. Avoid using aluminum, copper, or iron pans, as they can react with the lemon and cause a metallic taste.

Small Space,

| The Art of Hosting www.ScarlettMag.com

Hosting in small spaces can definitely be a tricky task. While some may think that a limited area might restrict the possibilities, savvy hosts know that it's all about embracing the coziness and making the most of every square inch. Let's explore the clever approaches for small gatherings that turn intimate spaces into venues for unforgettable moments.

First and foremost, hosting in small spaces brings about a unique charm and closeness that is often hard to replicate in larger venues. The intimacy fosters a sense of connection among guests, creating an atmosphere where conversations flow effortlessly. Unlike large gatherings, where people might get lost in the crowd, small spaces encourage meaningful interactions.

One key difference when hosting in smaller areas is that space becomes a valuable commodity, and hosts must carefully consider the layout to optimize every nook and cranny. However, this challenge is an opportunity in disguise. With thoughtful planning, hosts can create cozy corners and inviting nooks that add to the overall ambiance. It's about transforming limitations into creative possibilities.

Consider versatile furniture that can be easily rearranged on the fly to suit the occasion. Folding chairs, ottomans, and multipurpose tables can be stashed away when not needed, allowing hosts to adapt the space according to the flow of the gathering. Flexibility is the name of the game in small-space hosting.

Another advantage of intimate settings is the ability to curate a personalized experience for each guest. In larger gatherings, it's challenging to cater to individual preferences, but small spaces allow hosts to be more attentive to the details. Whether it's a curated playlist, custom-made cocktails, or handpicked decorations, these personalized touches make guests feel truly special.

When it comes to making a big impact in a small space, lighting plays a crucial role. Cleverly placed lighting fixtures can create an illusion of space and add a touch of glamour to even the tiniest corners. Fairy lights, candles, and strategically positioned lamps can transform the ambiance and set the mood for a memorable evening.

Maximizing vertical space is another trick up the sleeve of small space hosts. Wall-mounted shelves or hanging decorations not only save floor space but also draw the eye upward, creating an illusion of height. This simple technique can make the space feel larger and more dynamic.

Hosting in small spaces also offers the opportunity to get creative with the menu. Instead of a buffet spread that may overwhelm the limited space, consider serving bite-sized appetizers or setting up a stylish grazing table or charcuterie boards. This not only adds a touch of sophistication but also ensures that guests can easily navigate the space without juggling large plates.

To make a lasting impression, engage guests with interactive activities that suit the intimate setting. From DIY craft stations to personalized game nights, small spaces provide the perfect backdrop for shared experiences. These activities not only entertain but also serve as excellent conversation starters, fostering a sense of camaraderie among guests.

The art of hosting in small spaces is all about embracing the intimacy and turning limitations into opportunities. With strategic planning, personalized touches, clever lighting, and creative activities, hosts can create gatherings that leave a big impact on their guests. After all, it's not about the size of the space but the warmth and connection that make a gathering truly memorable.

In 1976, when Destin was a much smaller town, a small group of women saw that a number of needs were not being met in the community. So much was their desire to help those in need, that these women formed a club known as The Lakeshore Woman’s Club.

In 1982 in order to better identify with the community, the name of the Club was changed to, what is known today as, The Destin Woman’s Club, Inc. or affectionately “The DWC.” This is how it started; a few good women who came together with some good ideas and a desire to help others.

Although our area has evolved into a growing and bustling resortlike community, this basic principle is still what binds the Club today. The goals are simple: Enjoy each other’s company while finding ways to fill the needs of our growing community.

Some of these founding women, as well as a few others over the years, have passed away. But their legacy lives on. Today, women of all ages belong to the DWC and truly enjoy making a difference in our community.

Cindy Posey has been a member of the DWC since 1983! Anyone who knows Cindy is impressed by her radiant smile, never wavering enthusiasm and love of the Club. “I recall attending a business luncheon with several of my sorority members.

I had been a part of a lot of clubs in my life, but I was truly impressed with what the Destin Woman’s Club did for our community. I have a sense of purpose, and I appreciate what has been given to me. It also makes me aware of the needs of others, which is why DWC is so important to me.”

Another notable member was Mary Kirkpatrick. Such was her devotion to the Club and her commitment to helping others that the Club’s Family Fund was established. After Mary passed away, the Club renamed the Fund to The Mary Kirkpatrick Family Assistance Fund. Mabel Prescott, who has been a member since 1992, took on the role as Chair of the Fund and contributes her time in assuring that Mary’s legacy lives on.

This Fund, through the Club’s fundraising efforts, donates money to those families and individuals in need and fills the gap between public assistance and self-sufficiency. So often these families and individuals have nowhere else to turn. It provides help that includes grocery store, gas, department store gift certificates and/or gift cards and full or partial payment of rent, utilities, medical expenses, or child care.

The Fund also donates to various worthy organizations and nonprofits such as Food For Thought Outreach, Fisher House on Eglin Air Force Base, Children in Crisis, Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, Fishermen’s Fund, Children’s Volunteer Health Network, Harvest House, and Sacred Heart Hospital of the Emerald Coast. Over the past years, DWC has donated roughly $400,000. Quite an astonishing figure for a group of women, all who are volunteers!

Since 1994, when the Scholarship Fund was first established, the DWC has provided a self-perpetuating scholarship fund at Northwest Florida State College. This enables women to return to college, helping them to provide a better future for themselves and their children. As of 2014, the Scholarship Fund was renamed The Carol & Bob Winsett Memorial Scholarship Fund, in honor of Carol Winsett. Carol was a dedicated Chair of this fund for many years until her passing in 2013.

The annual Fashion Show Fundraiser is the Club’s most important fundraising endeavor and is held every year, normally in the Fall. Net proceeds generated from this fundraiser benefit the Club’s mission of helping those in need.

All the women who join the Destin Woman’s Club are drawn to the Club’s mission of making a difference in the community and to the wonderful spirit of camaraderie within the Club. Members stay connected through the Club’s monthly luncheons. In addition to taking care of the Club’s business matters, the luncheons also provide an array of special program presenters for the members. Local officials, physicians, writers, artists, archaeologists, chefs, and scholars, as well as fashion shows and local entertainment have provided enrichment and made many memories.

One of the Club’s newest members, Susan Ledford, a 37-year banker, shared her thoughts on joining DWC. “I thought what a wonderful group of ladies with such diverse backgrounds gathering for the betterment of our community. I knew that I wanted to be a part of that!”

Local business owners and individuals can help assist the Club in its fundraising endeavors by becoming a Sponsor. All monies donated through sponsorships stay in the community and are used to offset expenses associated with the fundraising activities organized by the Club, and ultimately to benefit those in need. There are several levels of sponsorship opportunities and all donations made to the DWC are tax-deductible within the current guidelines of the IRS.

Everything's

ischarge. Ok, ladies, don’t turn the page yet — just hear me out! It's a word that can make some women feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. But vaginal discharge is a totally normal and healthy bodily function that all women experience. Understanding discharge can help you determine what's normal for your body, verses when you may need to see your doctor about something concerning.

So, what exactly is vaginal discharge? It's a fluid produced by glands in the vagina and cervix that flows out through the vaginal opening. Discharge helps keep the vagina clean and prevents infection by flushing out dead cells and bacteria. The amount, color, and consistency of discharge changes throughout a woman's menstrual cycle. Right after your period, discharge is minimal. But it increases and becomes wetter and more elastic during ovulation to help sperm survive. Discharge returns to a thicker, white or light yellow after ovulation and during early pregnancy.

And what's considered "normal" discharge? That depends on where you are in your cycle. But in general, normal discharge is thin and mild smelling or odorless. Its color ranges from clear to white or off-white. The texture is usually smooth and thin, similar to egg whites. You may need a panty liner to absorb normal discharge, but it shouldn't require frequent pad changes.

It's also common to observe other monthly changes like an increase in the amount of discharge right before your period, or becoming stretchy, clear, and slippery during the most fertile days of your cycle. These are normal variations. If you notice your normal discharge pattern suddenly changing dramatically that could signal something like infection, which requires medical attention.

Abnormal discharge is excessive, foul smelling, or accompanied by other symptoms like itching, rash, or pain. It may be green, yellow, gray, or brown. The texture can also vary and might become chunky, which could indicate bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, or sexually transmitted disease. See your gynecologist right away if you notice abnormal discharge!

but isn't necessarily abnormal include:

• During pregnancy — more discharge helps prevent infection in the birth canal.

• When taking birth control pills — the hormones can increase discharge.

• While breastfeeding — estrogen levels are higher during breastfeeding, which can increase discharge.

• Around ovulation or sexual arousal — discharge increases to aid fertility and lubrication.

• In the years prior to menopause — women approaching menopause often have more discharge due to hormone fluctuations.

If you're ever concerned about your discharge, don't hesitate to discuss it with your doctor. Make notes about the color, texture, smell, and amount to best describe it. Getting checked gives you peace of mind that discharge secretions are following a normal pattern.

Ok, babe … we made it through the whole conversation! Now remember, vaginal discharge is nothing to be embarrassed about. It's a natural, healthy part of being a woman. With the exception of ovulation and sexual activity, discharge production remains fairly constant throughout life after puberty. Understanding what's normal for your body can help you recognize when something seems off. Pay attention to discharge so you can find comfort in its consistency or seek medical advice if changes concern you. With open discussion and awareness, we can destigmatize this normal female bodily function.
