Be Your Best You
W
e’ve just wrapped up our second annual Woman of the Year awards (brought to you by Scarlett and presented by Hancock Whitney!). I’ll admit, it’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work — a lot of organizing, a lot of decisions, a lot of details, and a lot of help from amazing sponsors and vendors — but the moment you see a room packed full of outstanding women that truly deserve a night of recognition, it’s all worth it! THE WOTYS is a time for the best of the best (as voted by you!) to come together and appreciate all the amazing women in our communities. But I’ll let you in on a little secret … you don’t have to win an award to deserve some positivity and appreciation in your life. You, chica, deserve that all day, everyday. And here’s another secret … there is literally an infinite supply of good vibes and affirmations just waiting to come into your life. This Wellness issue is all about taking control of your physical and mental health journey. From confidence-boosting mantras and journaling to working out, manifesting your best self can be a lot of work. But it’s all worth it. And if you don’t believe me, you’ll get two first-hand accounts of women — Tiffany and Liesel — who did just that … a lot of work that was totally worth it. They each have their own inspiring story that is still unfolding in ways they never thought possible. I hope you can find some inspiration in this issue. Whether it’s in a recipe, a shared experience, a new book, a creative outlet, or a new workout routine. You have everything you need to be your best self — let’s do this, ladies! At Scarlett, we love bringing you the latest in women’s fashion, beauty, home decor, lifestyle, and health. Thank you all so much for the support as we finish our second year of Scarlett. Enjoy this issue and connect with us on social media on Facebook: Scarlett Magazine and Instagram: @scarlett.magazine. Because frankly, we know you give a damn.

y story is not nearly as beautiful as those photos. My military history was, at times, extremely dark, terrifying, and earth-shattering. Plot twist, I didn’t have to deploy to see the underbelly of the military, but I digress. I am Tiffany Orner, a two-time military spouse, a mother to three ridiculously intelligent children, and a PROUD Air Force veteran. I'm a third generation military, second generation Air Force Veteran, and my two handsome boys are joining the United States Air Force this year. Also, I am one hell of a work in progress. During my service to our country, I struggled as a female in America’s military. Afterward, my struggles continued as a female veteran and military spouse desperately trying to find my “why.” I joined the military because I wanted something more. I wanted to “see the world,” have financial consistency, and to “adult” by getting the hell out of south Jersey (where I went to high school the last three years). Honestly, ahead of me raising my right hand, as that 18-yearold Tiffany, I wanted a change. My military service was … colorful. I learned so much about myself. I learned a lot about others and had the amazing opportunity to be a part of something so much greater than I could have ever dreamed, yet uglier than you could ever have imagined. Unknown at the time, I’d be chasing that feeling of pride for the 10+ years following my honorable discharge. While serving, I saw greatness in some of my senior leadership. I also saw the Air Force fail my sisters-inarms by brushing things under the rug that are now taking center stage due to ignoring these wildly inappropriate behaviors across all branches, not just the Air Force. 19

2/24/23 9:18 AM
For reference: After a dear girlfriend of mine was raped (I found her passed out in her dorm room, door wide open), her attacker was found not guilty and later he and his new wife were moved three doors down from her in base housing. Read that again. After my service to our country, I had multiple jobs. I had almost 20
different employers in 15 years. Yes, 20. I held multiple jobs at a time and always had another lined up prior to leaving. I was searching for a sense of purpose again. I wanted to feel a part of something greater than myself. I served in the United States Air Force for God’s sake, I wanted to be more. Also, we were poor. I’ve received food stamps for a period of time and
would pray for rain when I knew the electrical company was to shut off my service. I prayed for rain so I could use that as an excuse to tell my boys when they asked why the lights weren’t working. What changed? The way I treated myself. No more was I the victim. No more was anyone else at fault for my actions 21
17-24_Tiffany.indd 5

or lack thereof. I took ownership of what I wanted to do and the Tiffany I wanted to be. I wanted to be me. I no longer wanted to shrink to fit. I no longer wanted to change the way I was, to keep you comfortable. This was, and still is, a big one for me …. I could write this survival guide and fill multiple volumes. NO, you can’t touch my hair. NO, you aren’t allowed to tell me I articulate myself well without expecting me to have you explain yourself. NO, you cannot sexualize me for your benefit. I was literally referred to as the, “prize pig” with the big doe eyes.
Those days are long gone. I also had to forgive my past self. My boys often joke about the life my 6 year old has now. How she has so much more than they did, how she gets to talk back (#FakeNews), how she’s spoiled, etc. I had to explain to them, “Hey guys, listen, I know you’re joking, but I feel there’s some truth there and that’s totally okay. Your father and I grew up with you. We were in survival mode. We had no idea what we were doing and, full disclosure, we are still clueless when it comes to this parenting thing. But, ya know what? NO ONE knows what
they’re doing so there’s that.” My handsomes are 19 and 18. (Ya know, the military way, get married young, have babies young and super close together, lol) My boys understand and are so thankful and supportive. Ugh … love my handsomes. I share that conversation because until I was able to love the Tiffany that went through the shit, the real “suck,” I wasn’t able to move forward with purpose. Lastly, I am thankful for my tribe and therapy, the “Double T’s.” Becoming intentional with who I surround myself with has been one of the greatest blessings. My tribe

taught me that it was okay to seek help, professional help. They loved and continue to love my wild behind to this day, and for that I am forever grateful. I believe that having people in your tribe that challenge you, love you, call you on your shit and hold you accountable all while adjusting your crown quietly is paramount. I am so excited to add to my tribe here in the Panhandle. Oh yeah! I’m new here! We moved to Florida the day after Christmas from Albany, New York. This has been such an amazing transition of fruition because over three years ago, I wrote the following in my journal, “.... And I will live by the ocean doing EXACTLY what I love, helping Veterans.” - 15Feb2020. I wrote this during the time I was laid off from JDog Junk Removal & Hauling. I was their Business Development Manager at that time, but I knew. I knew change was coming, I just didn't know how big the change was going to be. I am so honored to lead Forever Warriors, Step One Automotive Group's private foundation, that supports service members, veterans and their familiesby connecting themwith resources that specialize in the following pillars of success: mental health, transition & sustainment and community immersion.Fun Fact: I am NOT looking to stand up new programs or processes, instead, I am looking to add value and support to those successfully operating within those pillars in this space and provide crazy unique experiences for those that have raised our right hand and our families that support us while we serve! As I look back at all that myself and my sister warriors have overcome, I am so damn proud. Tiffany, the young Airman and military spouse are so damn proud of the Tiffany I am today. So. Damn. Proud. I’m here, Florida Panhandle, and I will NOT stop, #UntilEVERYVeteranWantsForNothing.

ot all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them. In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. These fearless women are that and more. 27

any people who now live on the Emerald Coast are transplants from other places. It is a beautiful and enticing area that naturally draws people in. This creates a wonderful community of people who love their surroundings and want to make it the best place possible. Cali Hlavac is also a transplant. She was born in Harlan, Iowa, and now lives in Destin, Florida. Cali loves the melting-pot feel of her community and lets it inspire her to become as involved as possible. The love of community fuels Cali’s passions and influences her entrepreneurial mindset. She owns and operates To Do in Destin, a platform created to share events, new businesses, and happenings in the local community. She markets both to the locals and vacationers so everyone has a chance to experience Destin. Cali also owns Sassy Tangerine Creative where she helps businesses with their social media and marketing needs. Cali’s most recent accomplishment is becoming a Festival Organizer for the Destin Seafood Festival. This festival is one of the community’s biggest fundraising events. The money they raise goes right back into the community through the Destin Charter Boat Association where it is used for scholarships, environmental protection, and keeping the waterways healthy and clean. Destin was a community built by fishermen, and it continues to be one of the main reasons people visit each year. The Destin Seafood Festival also brings in thousands of dollars to the economy, which is no easy feat. Outside of these endeavors, Cali works with several businesses to plan and market events that give back to local animal shelters, Boys and Girls Clubs, the local education system, and so much more. Cali became the woman she is today through building relationships with others and putting effort into friendships, family, business relationships, and clients. Her network is impressive and allows her to do so much good throughout the community. Investing in the people around her really molded her into the woman she is today. Being able to buy a house on her own has always been a big dream for Cali. In 2021, she was finally able to check that off her list and make it her proudest accomplishment. If she could go back in time and give her 20-year-old self
some advice, she would tell her to follow her heart and do more of what makes her happy. A lot of what she has done and built in her life she had to navigate on her own without a roadmap. The constant throughout it all was the great people helping her do the things that made her happy. This has really helped get her to a good place today. Growing up, Cali watched her mother and father work long hours and make sacrifices for their dream of owning a successful business. Her mother became her greatest female influence as Cali observed her work ethic and drive to be successful. Even though they are retired now, it still blows her away to know how hard her mother worked. In every interaction Cali has she tries to find a way to help. Whether that is through marketing and promotion, or connecting with others in the community to expand their networks, Cali is always happy to make someone’s life a little easier. She is a natural connector and uses that to her advantage with every person she meets. Cali hopes that while working together everyone feels a little more taken care of in their journey of growing their own business.

r. Ashley Dubois, DDS, is a General Dentist and the Owner of Shoreline Dental Studio. Her practice is located in the heart of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and has been in operation since June 2022. She built the practice from scratch and couldn’t be more proud of how it has all come together. Fort Walton Beach is Dr. Dubois’ hometown, and serving those individuals and families is a source of great joy. Her proudest accomplishment, however, is being called “mommy” by three beautiful children: Olivia, Sophia, and Levi. They enrich her life, and she loves watching them grow into their own people. Getting to this point in Dr. Dubois’ life was no easy task. It took a combination of grit, faith, and continually betting on herself. Her family and friends have inspired her to become the woman she is today and continue to encourage her every step of the way. Dr. Dubois attended the prestigious New York University College of Dentistry before completing her Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Orlando, Florida. After finishing, she immediately moved back home to join a private practice. While she learned so much as an Associate Dentist in the local area, Dr. Dubois never felt like she was able to fully live out her career vision. She vividly remembers the afternoon in early 2020 when she called her husband and exclaimed that she was going to open her own practice! While Dr. Dubois had to jump through some hurdles during her startup

journey, her passion and discipline have created a powerful combination to propel her success. When she reflects on that experience, she realizes that she was being led to something bigger than she could have ever imagined. Women often run around daily life wearing too many hats to count. Dr. Dubois feels this when she thinks of her greatest female influence. She cannot pick one because she is continually surrounded by these amazing women. Her daily interactions leave her with many positive influences and experiences that make her feel charged and ready to go. It amazes her how many hats women can juggle while still being able to make a difference. As the leader of her dental practice, Dr. Dubois focuses on cultivating a culture of positivity. She wants her team to work well together and be of service to each other and those they interact with. This requires a lot of leading by example, being solution-focused, and clearly communicating with her team on a consistent basis. She is new to the role of owning her own business, but she is determined and hopeful of being a leader that inspires her team to keep getting better. Looking back, Dr. Dubois would tell her 20-year-old self to focus on living in the moment. She would want to travel more and learn not to sweat the small stuff. Time

moves much faster than you think it does. Currently, Dr. Dubois’ dentistry supports Food for Thought Outreach, which is a local nonprofit organization that provides meals to children experiencing food crises and food insecurity in the community. Over the next five years, Dr. Dubois hopes to continue expanding their network of involvement. They will work more with the wonderful Food for Thought Outreach program and dive into more hands-on volunteering. Dr. Dubois wants to help directly impact the families in the community and looks forward to being more involved in that process.

fter completing an undergraduate degree in Dance, Angela Fiorita was excited to continue on the path. Unfortunately, she suffered an injury that put an end to her dreams of earning a living as a dancer. It was a devastating blow, but one closed door always leads to another door opening. While researching and deciding which path to travel next, Angela worked odd jobs for a year or two. After a couple of false starts, she was eventually accepted into a Clinical Psychology Master’s program at Pepperdine University. Angela quickly realized how interesting psychology was and decided to stick with it. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree and her Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology and has been a psychologist ever since! Angela was born in Kentucky but lived most of her life in California. She currently lives in Miramar Beach, Florida, where she is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Registered Health Service Provider. She offers individual, group, couples, and family psychotherapy, consultations, psychological assessments, and evaluations. Becoming the woman she is today was greatly aided by Angela’s amazing parents. Her father passed away in 2013, but while he was alive he inspired her strong work ethic, love of sports, and quick wit. Her mother, sometimes called The Duchess, exemplifies wisdom, character, kindness, and grace that Angela hopes will come to define her too. Making the move to Florida is Angela’s proudest accomplishment. She faced a lot of obstacles and

challenges she needed to overcome to get to where she is, but it has been so worth it! She truly loves this area and everything it has to offer. Martha Graham, a dancer and choreographer, is Angela’s greatest female influence. She began as a classically trained ballet dancer and went on to revolutionize the professional dance world. Martha replaced the rigidity and technical formality of ballet with more natural, free, and emotionally expressive movements. Martha’s courage and creativity will always inspire Angela to trust her own instincts and not be afraid to deviate from the norm. Throughout her career, Angela has had the opportunity to supervise a number of psychology student interns and trainees. She was even an Adjunct Professor for several years, which gave her the opportunity to help others along their own journey. She is not sure how much credit she can take for their success, but she is always impressed by their achievements and hopes to keep seeing more and more success stories. The beginning of her career was in community mental health, but in 2018 she ventured out on her own and went into private practice. Looking forward, Angela wants to get back to her roots by offering more accessible therapy groups and psychoeducational workshops throughout the community. She hopes this will bring awareness of the growing need for mental health care and the many services

and resources available. She is also looking forward to moving into “alternative” services via expressive arts therapy, which could be a big game changer for those who hate the idea of traditional “talk” therapy. Expressive arts therapy groups can take on many different forms: visual art, music therapy, or movement and dance therapy. One of her favorites is the popular and powerful drum circle group she created several years ago called “Healing Rhythms.” Angela would love to take this experience to the local beaches and involve as many people as possible!

his heroine claims Austin, Texas, as her hometown but has lived in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, since 2004. Colleen Riddle is no stranger to hard work and discipline. As a competitive swimmer from an early age, she developed a solid work ethic and persistence. She began focusing on personal development, and that attention has helped fuel her growth and consequential success as an entrepreneur. The woman Colleen is today would not be possible without her amazing mentors who helped shape both her personal life and her business life. They were crucial parts of her development, and she is grateful for their influence. Colleen’s greatest female influence is Kimmy Brooke. Kimmy is a mentor for Colleen and has taught her countless lessons that have helped propel her forward and onto bigger and better things. Today Colleen is the owner of Elite Physique Personal Training. Her perspective is being a holistic personal trainer who focuses on aligning the mind, body, and spirit. The doors of her business opened in 2006, and she has been loving it ever since. Her entrepreneurial inspiration came from a desire to take her passion for fitness and combine it with her love for teaching. She took her teaching degree, her passion, and her knowledge and built Elite Physique Personal Training. Thinking back on who she was at 20 years old, Colleen would love to share a bit of insight to that younger version of herself. She would start by saying “stop worrying so much about what other people think!” She would

want her to focus on being her authentic self. Colleen would also mention the need to tap into her intuition and to really learn to trust it and be grateful for its influence. Colleen and her husband just celebrated 25 years of marriage. That relationship is Colleen’s greatest accomplishment. Relationships are no easy task, but they are also a vital part of our health and wellness connection. Colleen is so appreciative that her husband is her greatest supporter and biggest cheerleader. As a leader in the community, Colleen has enjoyed watching her clients have great success on their journeys. She is thrilled every time a client says she changed their lives by teaching them sustainable health habits. It is all about helping them tap into their own personal growth abilities, and Colleen is proud of the effort they put into helping themselves. Every single month you can find Colleen hosting a free bonfire for the community. These events are called “Release, Renew, and Reconnect,” and it is easily a crowd favorite. Colleen loves the ability to create a safe space for people to come together, pause, turn inward, and release what is no longer serving them. This communal experience is a wonderful way to connect with yourself, nature, and the community around you. Over the next five years, Colleen plans to continue these events and her volunteer service at Alaqua Animal Refuge. She will work on being in tune with the needs of the community and be there to support the health and wellness journey of anyone who needs it. • Last Google Search: My last Google search was “pickleball near me.” My husband and I were traveling and wanted to pick up a game of pickleball. he medical field is largely dominated by men. Because of this weighty difference, women often have to fight their way through the system to get to a place where they feel comfortable. Sonya S. Ahmed, MD, is no exception. During her college years, Dr. Ahmed experienced some pretty serious injuries from her athletic career. Throughout her recovery process, she was exposed to the medical field, specifically orthopedics, and discovered a great interest in that line of work. As she looked around and saw a lack of female influence, Dr. Ahmed was inspired to go after the career. Today Dr. Ahmed is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, Fellowship Trained Foot and Ankle. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and now lives in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Her road to orthopedic surgery was full of twists and turns, but she is so happy with where she ended up. During medical school, Dr. Ahmed juggled an athletic career in addition to her accelerated class rate. She finished her bachelor’s degree and medical degree in six years instead of eight, all while trying to fulfill her religious responsibilities and be a faithful daughter and wife. This struggle of learning how to effectively manage her time was an integral part of helping her become the woman she is today. The added challenge of being a female in a maledominated field helped fuel her fire and get things done. Dr. Ahmed is incredibly proud of the person and physician she has become. She enjoys finding ways to relate to her patients. And, by

remembering to be continually grateful, gracious, and humble helps her focus on the task at hand and give her patients the best treatment. Throughout her career, Dr. Ahmed has been recognized with numerous awards and achievements. She was inducted into the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Athletics Hall of Fame, became CMO of the Youth Olympic Games, and is one of the very few orthopedic surgeons privileged enough to care for professional athletes. Growing up, Dr. Ahmed had an excellent mother who easily became her greatest female influence. Her mother is the epitome of grace, intelligence, fortitude, and drive. Her mother has accomplished things that most others would cower at while trying to complete. Dr. Ahmed has tried to implement some of these qualities in her own life. She will treat patients pro bono if they are in great need. She has held free community clinics, volunteered at athletic competitions, and traveled with various athletic teams to provide their medical care. Dr. Ahmed also enjoys giving back through teaching. She teaches students, residents, industry representatives, new hires, and even shares her expertise with others in her field. Looking back on her life, Dr. Ahmed is happy with many of the choices she made. If she could tell her 20-year-old self anything, she would admonish her to stop and smell the roses, literally, every once in a while. Life is short and time is our enemy, so even though it sounds cliche, Dr. Ahmed wants to live each day to the fullest. She understands that you will never get that second, minute, or day back again. Receiving little messages or emails from those she has mentored in the past is always a win. It is hard to know how those around you have done under your leadership until they have gone out on their own, but when they reach out to share their successes, Dr. Ahmed knows she did good. That is when you know you have truly impacted someone’s life.

en — can’t live with them, can’t live without them. But luckily we’ve found a few good men! Leaders, mentors, partners, gentlemen. There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Gulf Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path. These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond. It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

fter living on the Emerald Coast for 38 years, Joseph Rogers would consider himself a local. He moved with his family from Gadsden, Alabama, to Destin, Florida, when he was only 6 years old. Giving back to local charities and prioritizing that giving spirit is incredibly important to Joseph. He knows that by investing in local organizations it will directly impact those that live in his community. As an entrepreneur, Joseph is proud to build his business in the area and to support his hometown community. He is the owner of Avantgarde Salons in both Destin and Niceville, Florida. With his role as Owner, Joseph focuses his time and energy on the development and leadership of his team. His proudest accomplishment as a business owner was the day he finally got to a position to offer his team a 401(k) and major medical insurance. It felt incredibly rewarding to support his stylists in a tangible and real way. The salons employ 40 stylists who have a wide range of specialties and talents. They love to help their clients see a better version of themselves and give them a boost of confidence. Joseph knew at a very young age that he wanted to be a stylist. His dreams kept growing to include the desire to own his own salon. His vision involved creating a place for a diverse crew of stylists to work with clients with equally diverse hair types. This vision continues to drive him and motivate him when directing his business and making goals. Just because he is the owner does not mean he is not still styling his personal clients. He works part time as a Senior Stylist out of the Destin salon and enjoys the time spent doing what he loves best. Looking back from where he is now, he would love to share some bits and pieces of insight to his 20-year-old self. He would tell himself to embrace each failure as an opportunity for growth. It is never fun to fall below the expectations you set for yourself, but it is important to keep the mindset that every step back can end up turning into two steps forward. Because his mother is such a strong female presence in his life, she is easily Joseph’s greatest female influence. He had no doubts about naming her because she is always kind, supportive, and loving. She is a wonderful example of positive qualities, and he is grateful for her incredible influence on his life. She always encouraged Joseph to just “go for it.” With her ever constant support and influence, Joseph continues to go after his dreams and reach higher and higher. In the salon and throughout his life, Joseph
does his best to cultivate a culture that encourages people to be their best selves. He wants his stylists to reach their full potential both in their personal lives and their professional lives. At Avantgarde, they are a team-focused workplace and all their leaders lead by example. That kind of environment makes all the difference when it comes to a functional workplace. Looking forward, Joseph is hoping to continue providing jobs to the community by expanding the salons and the services they offer. He is excited to see where these dreams can take him and the community!

rowing up as a preacher’s kid, Aaron Watson was continually inspired to become a better person. One especially meaningful Bible verse is Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you.” This verse was instilled into Aaron and his siblings, which inspired him to be generous with his time and resources. Today, Aaron lives with his wife and family in Gulf Breeze, Florida. He is the Owner of The Watson Law Firm, the Co-Founder of the Watson Family Foundation, and serves on the Board of Directors for The Escambia County Sheriff’s Foundation, The Escambia County-Santa Rosa Bar Association, and The Stetson University College of Law Board of Governors on the Executive Committee. As the Co-Founder and Treasurer of The Watson Family Foundation, Aaron is happy to provide real help to those in the community most in need. The foundation’s mission is to “help bridge the gap that separates deserving families from the support needed to guide them toward leading thriving lives.” Choosing his wife, Kimberly, as his Co-Founder for The Watson Family Foundation was a no-brainer. She is his greatest female influence, and he could write pages on all she has done over the years. From his fashion sense to his entrepreneurial spirit, Aaron’s wife has truly helped shape him into the man he is today. He would best describe her influence by quoting Proverbs 31, “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” He is thrilled to be her husband and to be raising a family with her. Marriage and family bring him great joy and shows him the depths of unconditional love, which is why starting a family with Kimberly is Aaron’s proudest accomplishment. Aaron has always been a hard worker. After graduating high school, he went straight into college at Florida State. For the next three years, he double majored and then continued on to law school. By the time he was only 25, Aaron was licensed to practice law. It is an impressive feat that could not have been accomplished without determination. His graduating class voted him “most likely to be in the library,” and that nomination certainly speaks to his work ethic. However, if he could say one thing to 20-year-old Aaron, he would tell him to lighten up and smell the roses! Last year, the Watson Law Firm was voted “Best Law
Firm” in Pensacola by readers of a local publication. In just seven years, Aaron and his team have taken the business from a small startup to a multimillion-dollar corporation. This feat would not be possible without the amazing legal team and dedication of each and every member. Aaron is grateful for his team members and proud to see their growth over the years. After experiencing such success, Aaron knew he could not let that good fortune go to waste. He gives back through pro bono legal work and volunteering with community organizations like his fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, Inc. The Watson Family Foundation is a great asset that helps the Pensacola community in a meaningful way. Through the foundation, they have been able to offer relief to deserving families and individuals through financial assistance, clothing and meals, backpack and laptop giveaways, scholarship opportunities, and their annual Turkey Dinner Giveaway. They also host an annual Juneteenth event to celebrate Black culture. Over the next five years, Aaron and his team expect to continue making a tangible difference in their community through fundraisers, giveaways, and sharing valuable knowledge. Aaron even has a book coming out soon about entrepreneurship!

Dr. Chris Croley Owner, Skin and Tonic Chief Medical Officer of Aesthetics, Empire Medical Training Molino, FL

ith an amazing mother as a stalwart example in his life, Chris Croley learned patience, love, encouragement, and resilience. His mom always puts family first and the needs of others above her own. Chris strives every day to grow, learn, and hopefully share a fraction of the traits of his mother. She was a registered nurse in a small town and in Chris’ eyes, absolutely brilliant. She never saw her job as simply a 9-5 position. She worked late to ensure her patients received the kind of care she would want anyone in her family to receive. The hard work and dedication of his mother inspired Chris to also pursue a career in the medical field. Today, Chris is a Board Certified Physician, originally trained in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. He lives in Molino, Florida, where he and his husband started their own Med-Spa called Skin and Tonic. About 15 years ago the two of them pursued training in aesthetic injectables and they use that training to provide their clients with the skin of their dreams. They are grateful to be in a place today where they can turn around and help others and support charitable causes that align with their personal belief system. Chris is also the Chief Medical Officer of Aesthetics for Empire Medical Training. He gets to educate health care providers and watch them pursue mid-career changes, and develop and grow their own businesses. For nearly 20 years now, Chris has also worked in the intensive care unit. It is easily the most challenging part of his career. He is challenged every day by the intensity and complexity of the patients he encounters. His proudest accomplishment is completing medical school. Growing up in a middle-class family with a mother as a nurse and a father as a rail worker, Chris was the first in his family to attend any type of graduate school. His life and career are focused on helping others. Sometimes he can help them at Skin and Tonic with a quick lip filler to help them feel better about the way they look. Other times, he can help them at the end of their life or during a tragic
moment when they require the intensive care unit. He feels fortunate and thankful that he has the education and background to help others in a real and tangible way. If Chris could tell his 20-year-old self anything, he would emphasize that life is a marathon, not a sprint. Take the time to enjoy the process of working toward your goals. Ever since graduating from medical school, Chris has served in leadership positions. He finds mentoring new team members an exciting and rewarding process. In his role as CMO at Empire Medical Training, he looks forward to developing new educational opportunities for the students, as well as new development programs to help further the education of the amazing faculty. When Chris and his husband started their business, they were impressed by how supportive the local community was. They are excited to get more involved with the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce over the next few years. The idea of supporting the growth of small businesses in the Northwest Florida area really resonates with Chris. Their main office is located in Santa Rosa County so they are looking forward to supporting their neighbors.

I
remember the first time I heard the song Yellow by Coldplay. I was 22 years old and riding shotgun in a truck bound for Cape Canaveral to watch the shuttle launch that didn’t happen, falling head over heels for the man driving. It’s a song that has held a special place in my heart for 17 years, but that line became even more meaningful to me when I did the thing I’m proudest of in my life: I overcame severe anorexia. Eating disorders are, by and large, something that challenges doctors of every ilk, every specialty. Be they doctors of the physical body or the mind, none of them seem to be able to prevent — or even fully understand — eating disorders. Which is why they are so misunderstood by the world, seen as a lifestyle choice, or a consequence of vanity, rather than what they are. Anorexia. Bulimia. Binge eating. They are all sides of the same coin and are all emotional and psychological disorders. They also have the highest mortality rate of any diagnosed mental disorder. My anorexia began when I was 14, when I felt like my world was falling apart around me, and I spun headlong into an emotional breakdown. As a result of all the noise in my brain, I’d spent that summer avoiding people, hiding out in my room unless I absolutely had to go somewhere. And when I did go out, I couldn’t look anyone in the eye, couldn’t spare words to speak out loud anything that might interrupt the words that I had to keep track of in my head, lest my tightly held grip on reality slip out of my grasp. Needless to say, my parents didn’t know what to do for me. Restricting what I ate became a coping mechanism and a replacement for everything else that had had me tied up in anxiety for months. It was the one thing in my world that I felt like I could control, one thing in my 14-year-old head that I could keep track of and make sense of. And so I controlled it to the point that it became a full-time thought that consumed my mind and took so much mental energy that it dictated all the other things in my life: where I went, who I saw, what I did during the day. If anything or anyone threatened that one thing, I stayed away from it. Each year, my eating disorder grew more and more intense. And, the damage that it caused became greater and greater — to me and to my family. Being the ones closest to me and the people who cared the most about me, they suffered in watching me waste away and knowing that there wasn’t really any way to help. And, I wasn’t ready to accept any that was offered. As a result, family celebrations, gatherings, holidays — they all became intensely stressful for me because of the food, and stressful for my family because of the tension that my problem caused in everyone. It was like a heavy cloud over everything. As it intensified, my anorexia began to rob me physically. I’d been an avid runner since the age of 17 and a well-known name and face in the local racing circuit. I was fast, and people noticed. But they also noticed something else. One day, I received a call
www.ScarlettMag.com
46-50_Liesel.indd 2
from a close friend and training partner telling me that I’d been banned from racing because the racing committee was concerned about my very marked weight loss over that year. The next week, my mother got a call from the president of a local running association that I belonged to, a two-hour long call in which he berated her for not doing something about my alarmingly low weight and my eating disorder. But there was nothing she could do. I was 26 by then. At my mother’s insistence, I went to doctors and nutritionists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors. But, I was only doing it to assuage my parents, who were both at their wits’ end and had no idea how to help me. I didn’t want help. I didn’t think I needed help. By the age of 28, I’d lost my social network as it was tightly bound to my running community. I’d disappeared after being banned from racing, and no one reached out to see what was going on. People don’t know what to do in the face of an eating disorder, so they often either don’t do anything, or they do the wrong thing and overstep. And sometimes I was on the receiving end of ridicule, rather than understanding. Consequently, I felt abandoned and alone. My job as a freelance writer didn’t help — it kept me safely hidden behind my computer screen. At the time, I was still living at home to save money, and I had reached the point that I was sure I was either going to be kicked out or forcibly committed by my parents. And so, when the man I’d been dating for a month proposed, I accepted. We were married for eight months. Eight months of constant verbal abuse and manipulation about my weight. While we’d been dating, he humiliated me by weighing me every time I went to his house to meet him for a date. And if I didn’t make it to his house, he brought the scale with him. I remember once standing on the scale in the dark at an O’Charley’s in Pensacola, right in the parking lot while people walked by. He’d given me the ultimatum that I had to bring my weight up to at least 90 pounds by our wedding, and if I didn’t, he wouldn’t marry me. He even staged an intervention with my parents, sister, and brother-inlaw. And when we left, I begged him to call off the wedding. To let me go. He refused. Behind closed doors, he would tell me that he liked his women skinny — “The skinnier, the better.” It was a mind-fuck and totally contradictory to what he told my parents, as was it to the way he seemed to revile me after we married, when he would sneer at me and say, “Do you think I’m attracted to this?” while he gestured at my emaciated body. When our marriage ended, I was left a widow to suicide who felt nothing. My marriage had been a horrible mistake, and I’d never loved him the way I should have. But he had seemed like my only choice. Over the next eight years, I lived on my own, getting more and more entrenched in the eating disorder that still felt like the only way to control the things I couldn’t control. As a self-employed writer, I was constantly worried about my finances, and food, 47

at least, was something that I knew I could have a say in. Eating normally was something that, to me, was as threatening as a loaded gun. Even though my logical brain knew I needed to eat far more than I was, I couldn’t. I was terrified of it to the point of literal nightmares. Even a broken hip that required emergency surgery and two months of recovery time in 2017 didn’t derail me. Nor did the words that my orthopedic surgeon spoke when he came into my room the night before surgery. He informed me that my right hip was both displaced and broken — merely from walking, as my bones had become so fragile that the impact of walking took them to their breaking point. It was going to require surgery, either to repair or replace it, and he wouldn’t know which was possible until he had opened me up. I listened numbly as he talked about what would happen, and the fact that he had very little confidence that I would live through surgery because of my weight and how much it was compromising my heart. Most people associate heart disease with obesity, but being as severely, life-threateningly underweight as I was put my heart just as at risk. My parents both cried as the surgeon advised them of the wisdom in telling me goodbye, but I didn’t hear the words. Even with the fleeting thought that the Chick-fil-A sandwich I had at 11 p.m. that night as the last thing I could eat before surgery might be the last thing I ever ate, I didn’t really allow the reality of how far I’d let this thing control me to sink in. As bad as it was at that point, never once did I think, “Fuck this. This is killing me.” Surgery was successful, and I was quickly sent home — still with the surgeon convinced that I was going to die and the hospital determined not to have my death in their books. I never even received physical therapy, just instructions on how to use the walker they prescribed me and a few follow-up appointments over the next eight weeks. As someone who was obsessed with having control over my own life and everything that went into my mouth, those eight weeks were torture. I couldn’t www.ScarlettMag.com

live on my own and could barely do anything for myself — most important of which was making my own meals. That task was taken on by my mother, who made whatever she made for herself and my father — both of whom have never suffered from weight issues and are slim. I ate with them under protest, severely panicked at the calories I calculated were piling in and on me. And yet, I still lost weight that I didn’t have to lose. Even when I ate everything my mother fed me, it continued to melt away. When I finally was cleared to go home to the new apartment where I’d had movers relocate my belongings, closer to my family than the 45-minute drive I’d previously had, I made marginal attempts at keeping the “real food” going. But even with the introduction of some new foods that had previously felt “unsafe,” I continued spiraling. By the time the end of 2019 came, there was nothing left of me to lose. At 36 years old, I weighed as little as a kindergartener and was osteoporotic, with severe hair loss, and a body that was almost constantly in pain. I’d lost 2 inches of height, and I hadn’t had a period since the age of 14. My skin was literally stretched over my skeleton, and you could count every rib, see every fiber of muscle I had left. I could even run my fingers over my right hip and feel the heads of the screws and the plate where they’d put me back together. Even my shadow was terrifying. Once upon a time, I’d had a head full of curly hair and legs that got me noticed. Now, I was a ghoul that people would walk by and whisper about, point at and laugh at. But they didn’t know the prison I was in. And then, God shattered my chains. My mother has always told me that I’m the strongest, most determined person she knows. She told me that often on the heels of talks when she voiced her fear over what I was doing to myself. “You have the strength to beat this, Liesel,” she’d say. “You ran a marathon on a broken ankle. You can do this. You just have to want to.” I can’t say I credit my recovery to that strength. Not solely, anyway. I wasn’t ready to change. But God was ready. God was ready for me to be more and to do more than what I had allowed myself. And so, one month before the rest of the world darkened and shuttered itself under the shadow of COVID, I shut myself away from everyone and everything that could see what was happening to me. What was happening was that I was finally, finally eating enough to sustain myself. More than enough, actually, as I couldn’t seem to satisfy the need to eat. I ate entire boxes of Pop-Tarts and whole bags of chips. I plowed through massive containers of cashews and anything else that looked good. And all of the things that I had been so terrified of became my lifeline and my way back to health.
But it also horrified me because I felt out of control. I hadn’t consciously chosen this. My body had. My innate sense of survival had kicked in and taken over. But the changes I saw in the mirror were not ones I felt I could live with. It was everything I had been so afraid of, come to life in my reflection. Still, every day I would eat until I was satisfied, padding to the kitchen in my stockinged feet and thinking, “Fuck it. I’ll go back to normal tomorrow.” But I didn’t. As a result, I spent the entire year hiding from my family — and they lived a mile away. I kept them at bay, even when they came to drop off groceries. I didn’t want them to see me until I’d returned to my “normal.” None of them knew what I’d been going through, and no matter how many times my mother asked me what was going on, I couldn’t bring myself to say the words, “I’m gaining weight.” As the holidays approached, I panicked. I’d broken my word to my mother that I’d see her at Thanksgiving, but as Christmas grew nearer and nearer, I knew I couldn’t stay away any longer. So I kept my promise that I’d “come home” before Christmas. I knocked on my parents’ door on Dec. 23. I was crying hysterically when my mom opened the door, ashamed of how I looked, and frightened at the reaction I would see in her eyes when she saw the change. What I saw in her eyes was relief, disbelief, and absolute joy. Behind all the tears, of course. “You’re beautiful!” she cried. “No, I’m not!” I said, sobbing. And, I didn’t think I was. I believed my own lie and the voices in my head that distorted reality. But I had come back to my family. Back. This person who had been dead for so long, this vibrant and alive person who had, once upon a time, been told that she sparkled. As unhappy as I was with what I saw in the mirror, I felt freed. Like someone who had been unshackled and given the world. Still, I didn’t take it. Not yet. Until that May, I stayed hidden, going only from my apartment to my parents’ house, where I spent every afternoon reestablishing the relationship I’d lost with my parents, sister, and nieces and nephews. It was a gift. What brought me out of hiding was the news of a friend’s death and the determination not to miss his memorial. And since I would need clothes to fit my newly restored body, I had to shop. I dreaded it, but I made myself go, and it showed me several things: that I looked completely normal and that no one gave me a second look, but also that it wasn’t that scary. I could go out in public and feel as though I belonged there. It wasn’t until two months later, in July of 2021, that the memorial finally happened. And what took place at that very casual, “very Jim” gathering was something beyond the scope of my wildest imaginings. All the friends I had lost in my running community, all of the people that had once been so much a part of my life, embraced me and welcomed me back warmly, rejoicing in the fact that I was healthy and finally free. 49

Free. Such a small word that holds so much. Since then, I’ve reclaimed my life. I’m running again and have reunited with family and friends, established new friendships, and traveled to anywhere and everywhere. Just because I can. To my great amazement, my curly hair has returned in full force, along with my periods as well as breasts that look fucking phenomenal in a Victoria’s Secret bra. Not to mention legs that get complimented on their shapeliness. I feel sometimes like Mel Gibson’s character in the movie Forever Young, as though I’d been frozen for ten years and finally reawakened. I’ve lost that time because the world moved on without me, while I stayed static, stuck in the prison of my eating disorder and all the psychological and physical damage it inflicted. I still don’t know what the longterm effects will be. I don’t know if I can have children, or if I’ll have any issues with my heart or kidneys. I can only pray that I stopped before it was too late to avoid permanent damage to my organs. I’m 39 now, on the cusp of 40. But I celebrate that, that I have reached this age when no one thought I would survive to live this long. I’m incredibly blessed, because I have a life I thought was forever lost to me. And a tattoo on my arm that reminds me of just how far I’ve come. “You're skin and bones, turned into something beautiful.” www.ScarlettMag.com

ithout journals we would not have some of the best history lessons. Sweet memories of times past would be lost with the ages, family history would be forgotten, and the legacies we hope to leave would vanish away like dust. Journaling, however, is a daunting task for many people. Where to start? How to continue? What to write? These are all questions that curious people ask as they investigate the idea of journaling. Hopefully this article will ignite the desire to begin journaling and help jumpstart the process. Journaling does not come naturally to many people. If you are looking to begin, think about why you have that desire. It could come from a place of wanting to preserve your life history. For some people the only way to make sense of the things in their head is to write it down. Or, it could simply be part of a morning or nightly routine that brings peace of mind. Whatever the reason for wanting to journal, let it fuel and motivate you to keep going! Journaling can look like a lot of different things to different people. The classic style of writing about what happened during the day is always an option, but if that does not work with your style there are plenty of other options to try out. Bullet journaling is great for people who are more artistic and like to doodle around the edges. Stream of conscious style works for people trying to get all their thoughts out of their head and onto paper. Lists are useful for those in a hurry, but who want to keep some kind of journaling routine or habit.

Coming up with things to write down is often the biggest obstacle for those just starting out. Here are just a few ideas to help get you started. A gratitude journal helps you look for and remember the good things that happen throughout the day. Keeping track of habits and goals in your journal can help you stay on track. These can be books you’ve read, miles you’ve run, or even dishes you’ve cooked. Some people who enjoy practicing with tarot cards use that time to also journal about the cards they pull. Taking the time to journal about certain experiences can be a great way to discover insights you might not have realized before. It can help you make sense of your emotions and the things happening around you. How can you incorporate journaling in a way that will bring meaning to your life and peace to your mind?

Find The Right Agent When you’re ready to buy a home, the real estate agent and how they communicate is the first thing to consider. It’s important to know if you communicate well with them and to understand their experience and knowledge of the market. Their knowledge is essential because they are your resource throughout the process, so you want to ensure they know your desires, communication styles, and the area. It’s imperative to find a professional. Most people know at least one or two agents, maybe more, but since this is one of the largest purchases of your life, you want to make sure to choose the agent who will best help you, not just one you know. www.ScarlettMag.com

Get Preapproved Finding a reliable, local lender is just as important as finding the right agent! Talking with your lender about your price range and a monthly budget that fits your needs is key. The last thing you want to do is fall in love with your dream home only to discover that you are not comfortable with the monthly payments! Finding an exceptional, local lender will set you up for success in finding a home in your price range. Your real estate agent should be able to point you in the right direction of an excellent local lender; that is why I recommend finding the right agent as step one!
Set Up A Buyer’s Strategy Meeting With Your Agent Setting up a Buyer’s Strategy Meeting is critical in homebuying because you’ll create the perfect plan to get the home of your dreams. It allows your agent to ensure your expectations align with the market and what you can receive for the money. It also prepares you for the buying process so that you can be aware of each step as it comes up, eliminating surprises and stress from each part of the process.
Don’t Change Anything On Your Credit Once you’re preapproved, changing anything on your credit can change your preapproval. Therefore, you may no longer qualify for the home you wanted. It’s important not to quit your job, buy a new car, finance furniture for the new house, or make any changes to your credit without speaking to your lender and agent first.
Ask Lots Of Questions Your agent, lender, and home inspector are available to answer every question and ensure you’re comfortable with the process. So, don’t be afraid! Ask as many questions as you need until you understand the situation. A good agent, lender, and home inspector will guide you through these steps and make sure all your questions have been answered.
Check Out The Area Once you’ve found the house and you’re in the inspection period, it’s always a great idea to drive through the neighborhood at different times of the day and stop by the local grocery store. Doing so allows you to see if the environment is a good match for the home you’re hoping to purchase.

Don’t Get Emotional While I understand that our home is our security, which means emotions can run high, you should take the emotion out of it. Think of it as a business transaction. You don’t want to get into a fight over $100 and lose a house you could’ve been very happy with because you’re standing your ground. Always consider the long-term situation and whether it makes sense to move forward with the property. Follow all these steps and, of course, work with the Jessica Duncan Team to help remove the stress from your homebuying process!

Mantras & Affirmations written by: Courtney Murray
64-66 MentalHealth.indd 1
2/24/23 9:34 AM
I
n our fast-paced world, we are constantly bombarded with outside influences pushing us in one direction or another. Whether it’s from friends and family or the ever-present chatter in our heads from consistent input on social media, it’s encroaching on our daily lives. Along with cell phones and smart watches has come the need to be always dialed in and always connected to others. While this has made it easier to do things like work remotely and stay in touch with loved ones from afar, it has taken us further from ourselves. We have forgotten how to listen to our inner voice, how to be totally self-motivated, and to trust our intuition. Enter mantras and affirmations. These magical little phrases are small but mighty. Don’t underestimate the power of your mind. A mantra can be life-changing by inspiring you to push further when you’re succeeding. Repeating a positive affirmation can also help to completely shift your mindset and get through a dark period in your life. These short phrases are more than just words; they have the power to propel your thoughts and practices toward a goal. Mantras can be something you create completely on your own, or you can search online for a mantra that resonates with you. Your mantra can change according to your mood, the phase of life you are in, or what you want to achieve. The word originates from Hinduism and Buddhism meaning a word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation, or a statement or slogan repeated frequently. In modern society, mantras can be something you repeat to yourself, or you can write down, or have it displayed somewhere you see daily for inspiration. Some examples of mantras that could fit a majority of people are:
• Don’t stress the could-haves. If it should have, it would have.
• Life is about the moments. Don’t wait for them, create them. • I am creating a beautiful life.
• I am enough. Who I am is enough. What I do is enough. And what I have is enough. • Forget the mistake; remember the lesson.
The wonderful thing about mantras is that they are completely customizable. You can always change and adjust them to fit your current life situation. As humans we tend to be empathetic toward others but very judgmental of ourselves. While these thoughts may start out as harmless, they can quickly become intrusive and cause us to hold back and not reach our full potential. Negative beliefs can affect the way we approach everything from friendships and romantic relationships to careers and big life choices. If you say anything to yourself enough times, you’ll start to believe it. Affirmations are similar and are short, powerful words or statements designed to inspire or motivate you to take positive action or change in your life. Mental health affirmations help replace negative beliefs with positive ones and start to shift your thought patterns. It isn’t about the thoughts “changing your life” overnight. But, by implementing these affirmations in your life, you can change your mental habits. Affirmations can help you build confidence and change your behaviors while working to achieve your goals. 65
64-66 MentalHealth.indd 2
2/24/23 9:34 AM
We are finally entering a stage as a society where we are valuing mental health and personal wellness more. Starting an affirmation routine can feel awkward at first, but over time it will become second nature. Writing them down in a journal can be therapeutic as well. Your thoughts are a reflection of your beliefs. If you’re experiencing depression or anxiety, the thoughts about yourself might be mainly negative. Positive affirmations can help to replace those thoughts, thus improving your overall mental state. When it comes to curating a mantra to help with these types of struggles, simplicity is better with phrases like, “I am breathing in, I am breathing out” and “Everything I need is within me.” Consider implementing a mantra into your daily routine to help ground you in the present moment. That’s something we could all use.

eing a human is hard. Being an adult human is even harder. Being an adult woman presents even more challenges. Women just have to deal with some things that men don’t, that’s just a fact. Women have monthly cycles, pregnancies, births, and so much more that takes a toll on their mental health and bodies. We are constantly bombarded with wellness issues we need to think about. Are we drinking enough water? Are we eating enough non-GMO, organic foods? Don’t forget sunscreen, but make sure the ingredients aren’t toxic to your body. It never ends. Everyone knows the benefits of daily exercise, especially for women as they age. When I go to my boot camp class it’s often categorized as “leg day,” “arm day,” “core day,” etc. But there’s an important group of muscles that we aren’t working out in class that are so often overlooked — your pelvic floor. So what are your pelvic floor muscles anyway? This big muscle group is made up of three layers, along with tendons, ligaments, nerves, and connective tissue that provides the base and support for the pelvic area. Both men and women have a pelvic floor that attaches to the pubic bone at the front and spans to the tailbone in the back. It is like a muscle hammock “holding” up some very important organs. For women, it holds the bladder in the front, uterus at the top, and the vagina and rectum in the back. For men, it supports the bladder, bowel, urethra, and rectum. These are facts that many intelligent adults don’t know about their own bodies! Education is key. While we hear more about pelvic floor health and therapy regarding women, the pelvic floor plays an important role for both men and women in bladder and bowel control and can impact your sexual health. I’d say those are things high on everyone’s priority list. Pelvic floor dysfunction can encompass a wide range of problems, and you should always consult a doctor if you think you may be having an issue and before trying any therapies. Like any muscle, you need to be strengthening your pelvic floor through exercises such as Kegels. If Kegels aren’t something you’re doing regularly, it’s time to start. If you don’t know what a Kegel is, it’s never too late to learn and Google
is your best friend. If you’re a woman of a certain age, or any age really, and you’re not doing Kegels daily you’re missing out on an opportunity for self-improvement. You can do Kegels while driving, while sitting at your desk, while drinking your coffee. You can even do Kegels as you’re reading this article. However, many people are doing them incorrectly. You want to do the Kegel contraction gently while breathing out slowly. I’ve come to the conclusion that pretty much all things in life are improved by breathing slowly. If you’re experiencing any pelvic floor symptoms that are preventing you from enjoying aspects of your life, physical therapy is a great way to help. Women can benefit from pelvic

floor therapy more as they age, if they’ve given birth, or have experienced weight gain. More than half of women with pelvic pain don’t know how to seek treatment. One third of elite athletes report stress urinary incontinence. Therapy can help, and you aren’t alone. Talk to your health care provider and be honest, be your own advocate, and seek treatment early. One visit per week for eight weeks is common, but many factors will play into your treatment plan. Many women brush off issues as “normal” and just live with it; but you don’t have to. If you’re nervous to reach out for help, just know that therapy is very common and normal. It can assist you in enjoying a healthier, active lifestyle with rewards like returning to a favorite sport or the ability to start a family. 79

s we settle into 2023, it’s the season when everything is fresh and new. Everyone is establishing new habits and instilling new routines. Many people “fell off the wagon” when it comes to healthy eating and working out over the holidays. Some of you may have your Peloton collecting dust in the corner since your tree went up. Others of us may not have eaten a vegetable since Halloween. Not to worry though, you can always start fresh. On average, it takes about two months to form a new habit and today is your day to begin with fitness. Working out should be fun. Period. If you are forcing yourself kicking and screaming into your HIIT class every day, try something new. If putting on your running shoes every morning fills you with dread, try something new. If you don’t enjoy it at least 90% of the time, you aren’t going to do it. Once you’ve figured out what workout fits your lifestyle and health goals, the next step is looking the part. Nothing motivates me to attend my daily Bootcamp class like a brand new set of workout clothes. Whatever gets you doing your burpees, right? Let’s break down some fun gear that will have you looking your best and set you up for success.
Leggings Women have been wearing leggings when working out for decades with good reason. They are the workhorse of fitness clothing. A quality pair of black high-waist leggings will make all your dreams come true. Well, maybe not … but they will hide imperfections, suck you in to accentuate all the right places, not fall down when jumping or running, and pass the see-through test when squatting in the gym.
Bras
Sports bras are arguably the most important piece of workout gear a woman needs. Tank tops are a place where you can go trendier and spend less money to build up a rotation of tops. Bras are not the place to skimp on money or quality as you usually get what you pay for in this category. Depending on the type of workout you’ll be doing, a different type of bra will be necessary. If you’re doing a hot yoga class for instance you could go with a low-impact moisture wicking fabric shelf-bra style. If you’re running or doing a boot camp-style class you’ll want something with wide straps and supportive but nonconstricting cups to give you maximum support and comfort.

Footwear Sneakers are having a real fashion moment. What was once reserved for sports or old men who paired them with khakis is now not only acceptable with everything from athleisure wear to high fashion, it’s incredibly cool. Not all sneakers are created equal though. Running shoes come in all different shapes and sizes, but the overall structure should provide lightweight support and cushion. If you’re into slinging weights, you’ll want a flat shoe with good ankle support and traction.
Accessories Now that you’ve got the clothing and footwear locked down, it’s time for some fun with all the fixings. Workout accessories aren’t just functional, they can be customized and cute for that extra bit of motivation to get you moving. Habit stacking is one of the best ways to get the most “bang for your buck.” If you’re already someone who goes on a daily walk, buying a pair of ankle and wrist weights to strap on before you hit your stride is a simple upgrade. Any workout where you aren’t listening to an instructor in a class like running, spinning, or hiking are great opportunities to stack on some entertainment, relaxation, or education with an audio book, guided meditation, music, or podcast. To make this experience even more enjoyable getting a cell phone armband holder and some matching wireless earbuds will ensure you’re hands free and passing by those miles with ease. No workout is possible without the unsung hero, H2O. A surefire way to encourage more water intake is with the right water bottle. A simple search on Amazon will show you that there are thousands of styles, shapes, and sizes to choose from. The large type with measurements are great to keep track of your consumption. Throw in some citrus, ginger, and mint to spice things up a little.

Good Vibes, Good Life
The People We Keep
By: Vex King
By: Allison Larkin
Join the self-love revolution with Instagram visionary Vex King. This audiobook features inspirational messages and universal wisdom to help you manifest positive vibes.
Little River, New York, 1994: April Sawicki is living in a motorless motorhome that her father won in a poker game. Failing out of school, picking up shifts at a local diner, she’s left fending for herself in a town where she’s never quite felt at home. When she “borrows” her neighbor’s car to perform at an open mic night, she realizes her life could be much bigger than where she came from. After a fight with her dad, April packs her stuff and leaves for good, setting off on a journey to find a life that’s all hers.
Vex overcame adversity to become a source of hope for thousands of young people and now draws from his personal experience and his intuitive wisdom to inspire you to: • Practice self-care, overcome toxic energy, and prioritize your well-being • Cultivate positive lifestyle habits, including mindfulness and meditation • Change your beliefs to invite great opportunities into your life • Manifest your goals using tried-and-tested techniques • Overcome fear and flow with the universe • Find your higher purpose and become a shining light for others With additional messages, this new version of the Good Vibes, Good Life audiobook is read by popular content creator and Vex King’s wife, Kaushal (@kaushal on Instagram). It will empower and inspire you to change the way you feel, think, speak, act, and live your life.
[Self-Help]
Driving without a chosen destination, she stops to rest in Ithaca. Her only plan is to survive, but as she looks for work, she finds a kindred sense of belonging at Cafe Decadence, the local coffee shop. Still, somehow, it doesn’t make sense to her that life could be this easy. The more she falls in love with her friends in Ithaca, the more she can’t shake the feeling that she’ll hurt them the way she’s been hurt. As April moves through the world, meeting people who feel like home, she chronicles her life in the songs she writes and discovers that where she came from doesn’t dictate who she has to be. This lyrical, luminous tale “is both a profound love letter to creative resilience and a reminder that sometimes even tragedy can be a kind of blessing” (Caroline Leavitt, New York Times best-selling author).

Nine Perfect Strangers
The Feel Good Effect
By: Liane Moriarty
By: Robyn Conley Downs
Could 10 days at a health resort really change you forever? In Liane Moriarty’s latest audiobook, nine perfect strangers are about to find out....
What if wellness isn’t about achieving another set of impossible standards, but about finding what works — for you?
Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amid all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these 10 days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next 10 days are going to be. Frances Welty, the formerly best-selling romantic novelist, arrives at Tranquillum House nursing a bad back, a broken heart, and an exquisitely painful paper cut. She’s immediately intrigued by her fellow guests. Most of them don’t look to be in need of a health resort at all. But the person who intrigues her most is the strange and charismatic owner/ director of Tranquillum House.
Radically simple and ridiculously doable, The Feel Good Effect helps you redefine wellness, on your own terms. Drawing from cutting-edge science on mindfulness, habit, and behavior change, podcast host Robyn Conley Downs offers a collection of small mindset shifts that allow for more calm, clarity, and joy in everyday life, embracing the idea that “gentle is the new perfect” when it comes to sustainable wellness. She then leads you through an easy set of customizable habits for happiness and health in mind, body, and soul, allowing you to counteract stress and prevent burnout. Instead of trying to get more done, The Feel Good Effect offers a refreshingly sane approach that will allow you to identify and focus on the elements that actually move the needle in your life right now. Less striving. More ease. It’s time to feel good.
[Feeling Good]
Could this person really have the answers Frances didn’t even know she was seeking? Should Frances put aside her doubts and immerse herself in everything Tranquillum House has to offer — or should she run while she still can? It’s not long before every guest at Tranquillum House is asking exactly the same question. Combining all of the hallmarks that have made her audiobooks a go-to for any listener looking for wickedly smart, propulsive fiction that will make you laugh and gasp, Liane Moriarty’s Nine Perfect Strangers once again shows why she is a master of her craft.

hen you greet someone, the first thing you do is reach out to shake hands. When you see someone across the way, you wave your hand. When you’re in an expressive conversation, you talk with your hands. So, what is a way to ensure you make a memorable first impression? Your nails. Nail shape, color, and design all play into the overall vibe of your appearance. Rocking a pointy matte black manicure will give you an edgy look, while short rounded nude nails evoke a simple and classic look. You could have a sleek suit, perfect hair and makeup, and the newest designer handbag, but if you have an old chipped manicure it can throw off your whole ensemble. Nail trends come and go though, and as we enter 2023, we are in a super fun era of anything goes with nails. This year, the trends involve every color of the rainbow, but certain colors are definitely used more seasonally. Bright shades and hot pinks are popular during summer months. And, a new trend we saw a lot this summer was clear manicures with neon tips as well as the comeback of designs like florals. Spring brings plenty of pastels and classic light pinks. Fall is the time to bring in all the plums, burgundy, and matte nudes. And of course winter is the season to go dark with moody reds or go full snow queen with white and all the sparkles. A trend we’ve been seeing throughout the fall that has continued into winter is eyecatching finishes like chrome and super lacquered “glazed donut” tips. Pinks, reds, and nudes will never go out of style for nails, but if you’re trying to stand out, unexpected colors like mustard, denim blue, forest green, and camel tan will have you looking selfie ready. If you can’t decide on one color, then the monochromatic nail trend with each nail featuring a slightly different shade and hue in the same family might be for you. Each nail being a different color might be daunting, so you can start small with the trend of just your ring finger being the stand-out color or a shimmer or sparkle.

Short, long, square, stiletto, rounded, and oval. Just like silhouette and length trends come and go for jeans, the same goes for nails. This past year we saw a lot of long almond and coffin or ballerina-shaped nails. Expect 2023 to be swinging back the other direction with the comeback of the short simple manicure. We are even seeing a comeback of the French manicure that was so popular throughout the early 2000s. The simple, light pink and white combination is always a fan favorite, but now we are also seeing the French manicure tips in bold, out-of-the box colors like black or coffee. Fashion and beauty trends are extremely cyclical. Like, who would’ve guessed fanny packs and platform sneakers would be back in style, but here we are. The 2000s also brought with it the era of nail art with lots of funky designs painted on your toes and glittery stick-on nail decals you would do at home. Luckily we have come a long way in terms of nail art with intricate hand-painted designs and subtle application. With platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest, the possibilities for nail inspiration are endless. So dive right in and start experimenting when you find something that sparks your interest. There’s so many ways to dip your toes … and your fingernails into the world of nail trends.
