Liebe SEHW-Fans, In der letzten Ausgabe endeten wir mit der Frage, ob es nicht die Geschichten seien, die unsere Aufmerksamkeit fesseln. Jetzt sind die Geschichtenerzähler von SEHW mit neuem Stoff zurück, mit neuen Themen, mit bebilderten Geschichten von Menschen und ihren Häusern, Chronisten unserer Zeit.

Es hat sich viel getan, nicht nur in unserem Büro, nein, in unserer ganzen Branche, in unserer Stadt, in unserem Land, in unserer Welt. Alles ist ständig in Veränderung und nicht immer lässt sich darin Sinn erkennen. Durch diese Umwälzungen, diese strukturellen Veränderungen und letztlich politischen Entscheidungen in unserer gesellschaftlichen Ordnung bleiben mit einem Mal Räume übrig. Räume, die wir mithilfe architektonischer Ideen mit Leben füllen.

Nicht Politik macht Stadt, sondern wir Architekten, Initiatoren von Stadt und von Projekten, die Möglichkeitsräume schaffen. Nicht Reglementierungen und Zwänge machen Stadt, sondern das Loslassen, das Fliegenlassen. Nur in großer Fallhöhe entstehen die Ideen, die für ein Morgen taugen, von dem wir heute nur eine verschwommene Vorstellung haben, siehe Auto, siehe Smartphone. Ich war nie Science fiction fan, aber ist es nicht spannend zu sehen, wie man sich früher das morgen vorgestellt hat? Und heute? Ist es schon gestern. Umso wichtiger, eine Vision zu haben, wie wir morgen leben wollen und welche Räume wir dafür brauchen.

Nichts wie los!

Dear SEHW fans, In the last issue, we ended with the question of whether stories grab our attention. Now SEHW’s storytellers are back with new material, new themes, illustrated stories of people and their houses, and chronicles of our time.

A lot has happened - not only in our office, but in our entire industry, in our city, in our country, and in our world. Everything is constantly changing and it’s not always easy to make sense of it. Through these revolutions, structural changes and, ultimately, political decisions in our social order, spaces are suddenly left over. Space that we fill with life using architectural ideas.

It isn’t politics that makes cities, but rather us architects, city initiators and projects that create spaces of opportunity. It’s not regulations and constraints that make a city instead, it’s all about spreading your wings and letting go. The ideas of tomorrow, that we only have a vague idea of today, can only be conceived from great heights - just think of cars or smartphones. I’ve never been a science fiction fan, but isn’t it exciting to think about how we used to imagine tomorrow? And today? It was already yesterday.

This makes it all the more important to have a vision of how we want to live tomorrow and the spaces we require for this purpose.

Come on, let’s go!

Die Initiierung von Projektentwicklung steht bei SEHW ganz oben.

Prof. Xaver Egger, der diese Thematik auch an der Hochschule Bochum unterrichtet, sieht die Aufgabe seines Büros vornehmlich im Erfassen der gesellschaftlichen Gesamtsituation, in die ein Projekt gleichsam hineingepflanzt wird.

How do we live now and how do we want to live in the future?

Initiating project development is a top priority for SEHW. Prof.

Xaver Egger, who is teaching this subject at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences, sees the primary role of his company as capturing the whole picture of the community into which a project is to be planted.

Dazu gehören eine sorgfältige Analyse der demografischen Entwicklung eines Ortes, der Kontext in Bezug auf umliegende Bauten und die soziodemografische Entwicklung der Stadtgesellschaft an sich.

This includes a careful analysis of the demographic development of the area, the context of the surrounding buildings and the socio-demographic development of the city itself.

Ob Wohnhaus, Ministerium oder Forschungseinrichtung, im Endeffekt steht die Frage am Anfang: Wer nutzt letztendlich den Raum? Und im größeren, gesamtgesellschaftlich orientierten Ansatz: Wie sieht das Zusammenleben der Zukunft aus?

Diese Fragen stellen sich die Architekten von SEHW jeden Tag von neuem und der Blick fürs Ganze bedeutet folgerichtig auch die Vielfalt in der Ausführung. Denn jeder Ort hat eine andere Geschichte und Zukunft – vielleicht verändert er sich gerade in diesem Moment und fragt nach einer neuen Auslegung und architektonischen Antwort.

Ein Beispiel hierfür ist ein ehemaliges Kaufhaus, welches von SEHW zu einem „urban farming“– Projekt umgestaltet wird. Mit Nutzung der weitläufigen Stockwerke für Gewächshäuser, einer Markthalle als Treffpunkt im Erdgeschoss und einem Restaurant ganz oben im Gebäude bildet der Entwurf eine nachhaltige und vor allem innovative und zukunftsorientierte Idee, die nicht zuletzt auf einer genauen Analyse der demografischen Entwicklung sowie der ökonomischen Situation des Ortes basiert.

Gesellschaftliche Themen liegen SEHW am Herzen, so zum Beispiel auch die Wissensvermittlung. Gemessen an den Massen der Studierenden, die ihr Studium wechseln oder abbrechen, herrscht derzeit ein großer Orientierungsbedarf in unserer Wissensgesellschaft, die Wissen zwar zugängig macht, den Einzelnen aber letztendlich in einem Ozean der Vielfalt allein das Schwimmen lernen lässt. Nicht jeder Studiengang führt zum Abschluss, nicht jeder Abschluss zum Job. Mit diesen Tatsachen konfrontiert, widmet sich ein Großteil der Arbeit von SEHW der Projektentwicklung von wissensorientierten Einrichtungen.

Whether it is a residential building, ministry office or a research institute, the most important question needs answering at the very start: who will ultimately use the space? More generally, a community-oriented approach: how will we live together in the future?

The architects at SEHW ask themselves this question every day with a holistic view that consequentially results in a great variety of designs. Each place has its own history and its own future perhaps it is undergoing change at this very moment and is asking for something new and looking for an architectural answer.

An example of this is the remodelling of a former department store into an ‘urban farming’ project by SEHW. By using the spacious floors for greenhouses, a market hall as a meeting point on the ground floor and a restaurant at the very top of the building, the plan represented a sustainable and especially innovative futureoriented idea. An idea based not least upon a precise analysis of the demographic development and economic situation of the location.

Community themes are of huge importance to the architects at SEHW, such as the transfer of knowledge. Based upon the sheer numbers of students who change their programme of study or drop out, there seems to be a huge need for guidance in our knowledge-based society that indeed makes knowledge accessible but leaves individuals to navigate an ocean of variety alone. Not everyone graduates from university and not every graduate finds a job. Confronted with this fact, SEHW dedicates a large proportion of its work to project development of knowledgeoriented institutions.

Ein Beispiel hierfür ist das von SEHW konzipierte „Talentarium“ wo sich junge Menschen an verschiedenen Stationen in eine Tätigkeit hineindenken und somit vorhandene und verborgene Talente entdecken und mit entsprechenden Jobideen verknüpfen können.

Unternehmen sind in dieses Projekt gleich mit eingebunden, so dass ein direkter, fruchtbarer Austausch, basierend auf wirtschaftlichem Bedarf und Rekrutierungsoptionen, ermöglicht wird.

Durch eine gleichzeitig breitgefächerte und innovative Lösungssuche bietet SEHW ein Profil, welches auch von jenen Kunden genutzt wird, die nach baulichen Lösungen für spezielle Anforderungen suchen. Diese können zum Beispiel auf sozioökonomischen Entwicklungen basieren, so wie im Falle der sogenannten „Business-WGs“. Hier vereint sich der KommunenGedanke der 70er Jahre mit ganz grundsätzlichen wirtschaftlichen Bedürfnissen, nämlich einem vorübergehenden Zuhause für die global agierenden sogenannten Job-Nomaden des digitalen Zeitalters. Für ein Startup, welches sich um bezahlbaren Wohnraum für eine Klientele von Job-Nomaden im Alter zwischen 20 und 40 kümmert, entwarf SEHW einen Neubau in BerlinMoabit. Das Gebäude vereint Wohneinheiten mit gemeinschaftlichen Bereichen zum Kochen und für den gedanklichen Austausch, zum Beispiel über neue Startup-Ideen.

Prof. Xaver Egger begann seine berufliche Laufbahn 1992 im Anschluss an sein Diplom in Hamburg, wo noch heute ein Partnerbüro unter demselben Namen besteht. Der gelernte Tischler absolvierte sein Architekturstudium in München, mit einem kurzen Abstecher in die Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

Auslöser für den Umzug von Hamburg nach Berlin war 1996 der erste SEHW Wettbewerbserfolg für ein Großprojekt, ausgeschrieben durch die Humboldt-Universität. Derartig nach Berlin „gelockt“, sah man sich zwar der stimulierenden Aufbruchsstimmung der 90er mit all ihren architektonischen Möglichkeiten gegenüber; jedoch gleichzeitig mit der Aufgabe behaftet, Beziehungen in einer neuen, zunächst fremden Stadt zu knüpfen. Dadurch entstand die Idee der proaktiven, analytischen Projektentwicklung.

Ein großer britischer Bauherr bot SEHW im Jahr 2000 die Möglichkeit für eine europaweite Projektentwicklung im Bereich Health und Wellness. An verschiedenen Standorten wurden Neubauten, Um- und Ausbauten geschaffen, die in völlig unterschiedlichen Aufgabenstellungen jeweils unterschiedliche Identitäten entwickeln und trotzdem einen roten Faden erkennen lassen. Businesses are equally involved in this project so as to allow a direct and fruitful exchange based upon commercial needs and recruitment options.

SEHW takes an approach to problem solving that is both wide-ranging and innovative and offers a profile that can also be used by those customers who are looking for structural solutions with special requirements. These can be based on socio-economic developments, for example, as in the case of ‘shared living spaces for businesses’. These bring together the community thinking of the ‘70s with fundamental needs of businesses - specifically a temporary home for the globally active ‘job nomads’ of the digital age. For a startup that was looking for affordable living spaces for a clientele of job nomads between the ages of 20 and 40, SEHW Architektur designed a new building in Moabit in Berlin. The building unites living units with communal areas for cooking and exchanging ideas, for example about new startups.

Professor Xaver Egger began his career in 1992 after getting his diploma in Hamburg where a partner office of the same name still exists. The trained carpenter completed an architecture degree in Munich, making a short detour to the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf.

The trigger for the move from Hamburg to Berlin was SEHW’s first successful bid for a competitive tender for a large project with Humboldt University in 1996. Attracted to Berlin, it was possible to see the stimulating and rising mood of the 1990s with its architectural possibilities, whilst at the same time having to take on the task of building new relationships in a new and unknown city. It was this atmosphere that brought about the idea of the proactive analytical approach to project development.

In 2000, a large British builder offered SEHW the chance to take part in the development of a Europe-wide project in the field of health and wellness. In various locations, new buildings and reconstructions or extensions were created which, in each case, develop different identities in completely different assignments, but nevertheless indicate a common theme. An example of this is ‘Holmes Place’ in Hamburg that is integrated into a building complex from the 1970s and has been turned into a spa. This was no easy task, but was perfect for SEHW and its ability to think outside the box. Further projects were undertaken in Salzburg, Linz, Cologne, Berlin and Lübeck. Aesthetically integrated,

aus den 70ern, der „in zweiter Reihe“ zum Spa umgebaut wurde. Keine leichte Aufgabe, doch genau das Richtige für die Querdenker bei SEHW. Weitere Projekte wurden in Salzburg, Linz, Köln, Berlin und Lübeck umgesetzt. Ästhetisch durchgängig, bieten diese Bauten abgesehen von den Spa-Einrichtungen gleichsam Wellness fürs Auge.

SEHW orientiert sich zwar ästhetisch an Umfeld und soziodemografischem Kontext, doch die Formsprache ist trotz aller Vielfalt immer wiederzuerkennen. Bei einem dezenten Farbspiel durch materialbedingte Töne wie Hellgrau, Weiß, Braun und Stahl schleichen sich klare Flächen in lebensbejahendem Grün und den Grundfarben Blau und Gelb und Rot hinein, immer im Zusammenspiel mit Umfeld, Belichtung und Beleuchtung, optisch zurückhaltend und doch maßgebend zugleich.

Die Kundenlandschaft ist bei SEHW ebenso vielfältig wie die architektonischen Lösungen und so suchen sowohl private Kunden als auch die öffentliche Hand, sowohl Investoren als auch Forschungs – und Wissenschaftseinrichtungen bei SEHW nach jeweils individuell angepassten, spezifisch innovativen Umsetzungen, die nie das Ganze aus den Augen verliert. So gelingt die „Anpflanzung“ eines neuen Projektes und so nährt es in der Folge auch seine Bewohner, die darin leben, lernen, gedeihen und wachsen können, mitten hinein in die gesellschaftliche Zukunft.

Even though SEHW focusses on the aesthetic environment and socio-demographic context, the form language is always recognisable despite its diversity. Amongst the unobtrusive use of colour that uses material tones such as light grey, white, brown and steel, clear areas of life-affirming green and the base colours blue, yellow and red creep in. These are all coordinated with their surroundings, lighting conditions and are visually conservative and yet decisive at the same time.

SEHW’s customers are as varied as their architectural solutions. Both private and public sector customers, investors as well as scientific and research institutions look to SEHW for personalised and specifically innovative designs that never lose sight of the whole picture. This is how SEHW ‘plants’ a new project and subsequently nourishes the residents who can then live, learn, thrive and grow into their surroundings and the future of their community.

Forsch, forsch! – Wissenschaft Science and research und Forschung bei SEHW at SEHW SEHW verknüpft gerne Altes mit Neuem. So geschehen etwa auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen größten Lokomotiven-Werks Europas südöstlich von Berlin, heute Campus der Technischen Hochschule Wildau.

SEHW likes to combine old and new together. For example, this has been achieved on the premises of Europe’s former largest locomotive factory southeast of Berlin which today makes up Wildau Technical University of Applied Sciences’ campus.

Studentisches Wohnen für 100 Studenten und ein Lehrgebäude für sieben verschiedene Studiengänge wurden für die TH Wildau als Neubauten konzipiert, während ein Hörsaal-Zentrum in die denkmalgeschützte Backsteinhalle des ehemaligen Lokomotivenwerkes integriert wurde. Als „Haus im Haus“ gebaut, lässt das Audimax einen respektvollen Umgang mit dem Backsteingebäude zu. Zuletzt wurde noch eine Cafeteria integriert, die tagsüber hungrigen Studenten zu Diensten ist.

Residences for 100 students and a teaching building for seven different faculties have been newly designed for Wildau University, whilst lecturing halls have been integrated into the listed brick building of the former locomotive factory. Built as a “house inside a house”, the main auditorium respects the listed brick structure.

Finally, a cafeteria has been integrated to provide food to hungry students throughout the day.

Auch in Darmstadt hat die Fusion mit einem Bestandsgebäude funktioniert, hier allerdings mit einem Bau aus den 60er Jahren, nämlich dem ersten Großrechenzentrum Deutschlands. „Eisberg” – so haben die Darmstädter den Neubau des Fraunhofer Instituts für sichere Informationstechnologie liebevoll genannt. Zum Spitznamen inspirierte ohne Frage die strukturierte Fassade, die durchaus an die erhabene Energie eines Eisbergs erinnert. Die Struktur symbolisiert allerdings mathematische bzw. informationstechnische Strukturen, also Codes, und schafft somit einen optischen Bezug zum Bestandsgebäude und zur Nutzung.

Kunstvoll ineinander geschachtelte und unsichtbar befestigte Aluminiumelemente bilden Vor und Rücksprünge über drei unterschiedliche Tiefen. Die ebenfalls unregelmäßig angeordneten Fensterbänder nehmen das Thema auf und im Ganzen ensteht eine Gebäudehülle, die selbst Code ist und dechiffriert werden möchte.

Innen gibt Transparenz im wörtlichen und übertragenen Sinn den Ton an: Glaswände machen das Erdgeschoss zu einem einladend lichtvollen Eingangsbereich mit Ein – und Durchblicken in weitere Räume und einer Farbgebung in angenehm zurückhaltend erdigen Tönen. Verknüpfung, Transparenz und Kommunikation sind hier drei gestalterische Hauptkomponenten, die bei der Schaffung des Neubaus in verschiedenster Form ihren Ausdruck fanden.

Datensicherheit hält als gesellschaftlich kritische Thematik dagegen, womit dieser Bau seine eigene spannungsgeladene Aufgabe erhielt.

Im Falle der Erweiterung des Instituts für Sportwissenschaften des „Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie“ KIT wurde ein abgängiges Bestandsgebäude durch einen der waldigen Umgebung angepassten niedrigen Kubus ersetzt, welcher sich durch seine eigenwillige, wie dunkel gewobene Fassade mit Unterbrechungen durch hohe Fensterwände und vielen Grüntönen im Innern deutlich an einer optischen Spiegelung der Natur-geprägten Umgebung orientiert. Wer will schon nicht mitten im Wald Sport treiben?

Auffallend in den von SEHW konzipierten Forschungsgebäuden ist die schlichte Form und Farbgebung, wobei Grüntöne eindeutig den Trend setzen und eine weitere Farbgebung durch Materialien wie Aluminium, Stahl und Beton vorgegeben und belassen wird.

This fusion with existing buildings has also been achieved in Darmstadt, but this time with a building from the 1960s that was Germany’s first large computer centre.

The new building for the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology has been affectionately named ‘the iceberg’ by the residents of Darmstadt. This name has undoubtedly been inspired by the structured façade that evokes the noble energy of an iceberg. The interlaced structure symbolises the code structures found in mathematics and information technology and creates a visual reference to the existing building and its use. Artistically interlaced and invisibly mounted aluminium parts create protrusions and inlays at three different depths. The irregular arrangement of the window rows pick up on the theme and create an overall shell for the building, which is in itself code that is waiting to be deciphered.

Inside, transparency sets the tone in both a literal and figurative sense: glass walls turn the ground floor into a bright and inviting entrance area with views into and through additional spaces with a pleasant use of conservative earth tones. Connections, transparency and communication are the three main concepts that have been expressed using a very different form in the creation of this new building. As a critical topic in society, data security counters this and gives this building its own suspenseful task.

For the expansion of the Institute for Sports Science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), a dilapidated building was replaced with a low cube structure that fits in with the surrounding woodland. This structure clearly reflects its natural environment in its own unique way using a dark textured façade interspersed with tall window walls and the use of many green tones on the inside.

Who would not want to play sports in the middle of the woods?

Conspicuous in the design of SEHW’s educational buildings is the simple shape and use of colours where green tones play a key role with additional colouring provided by materials such as aluminium, steel and concrete.

This symbiosis between old and new works; the continuity of life and learning finds its place – as well as its creative space.

Eine Hallig an der Havel und ein zweites Leben: wie SEHW erlebbare Wohnräume schafft An island on the river Havel and a second life: how the architects at SEHW create living spaces that can be truly experienced Ein Wasser-Grundstück direkt an der Havel, mit Blick auf geschützte Natur: Mit dieser Prämisse trat ein Kunde zwecks eines privaten Wohnhausprojektes an SEHW heran.

Realisiert wurde das Ganze in einer überraschenden Kombination von schlichtem, formschönen Design und optischer Öffnung nach außen. Die Verteilung von insgesamt 600 Quadratmetern auf fünf Pavillons mit leicht erhöhter, durchgehender Bodenscheibe schuf eine „Wohnlandschaft in der Landschaft“ in Harmonie mit der Umgebung. Durch die Aufteilung in 5 verschiedene Baukörper entstanden als Terrassen nutzbare Freiflächen und vielfältige Ausblicke. Durch großzügige Glasfronten wirken die einzelnen Räume lichtdurchflutet und offen, ohne dabei den schützenden Hauscharakter zu verlieren.

The entire structure was realised with a surprising combination of simple and beautiful design and an optical opening to the outdoors.

A total of 600 square metres were distributed across five pavilions with a slightly elevated layer of ground to create a “living landscape in the natural landscape” that is in harmony with the environment.

By dividing the space up into five different buildings, versatile open terraces were created with a variety of vistas. Generously sized glass façades flood the rooms with light and give them an open feeling without losing the protective character of a house.

Harmonie mit der Umgebung spielte auch beim Bau des Studentenwohnheims in Wildau eine große Rolle. Auf dem Gelände eines ehemaligen Lokomotivenwerks, heute Campus der TH Wildau, wurde neben den ebenfalls durch SEHW gestalteten Lehrgebäuden ein „studentisches Apartmenthaus“ geschaffen. Für jeden der 100 Bewohner gibt es Platz mit je 21m² pro Apartment inklusive Küchenzeile und Bad. Homogenisiert wird die Individualität im Wohnen durch eine durchgehende Glasfassade, die augenzwinkernd der gewachsenen Natur durch den Print von Grashalmen auf den Glasflächen eine artifizielle Natur gegenüberstellt.

Harmony with the environment also played a major role in the construction of the student residences in Wildau. On the premises of a former locomotive factory, which today hosts the campus of the Wildau University of Applied Sciences, SEHW created a type of student apartment building alongside the teaching buildings’ design. Each of the 100 residents has an apartment of 21 square metres including a kitchenette and bathroom. The individuality of the living spaces is homogenised using a seamless glass façade, which is printed with blades of grass that contrasts artificial nature with nature itself.

Auf dem Dach sind Reihen von Sonnenkollektoren sichtbar, nachhaltige Energienutzung ist hier inbegriffen. Helle Grüntöne in der Gestaltung gestatten auch im Winter Frühlingsgefühle und die Hörsäle im denkmalgeschützten Backsteinbau sind nur einen Gang von wenigen Minuten entfernt. Studentenjahre als Herrenjahre!

Rows of solar collectors can be seen fitted along the roof, making sustainable energy use a part of the design. Light green tones cater for a feeling of spring even during the winter months and the lecture theatres in the listed brick building are just a short walk away. Years as a student can be the best years!

In Berlin Zehlendorf haben SEHW einem Industriebau ein neues Leben verpasst. Als Zweckbau erbaut, wurde er durch ein klares Raster mit starken Unterzügen definiert. Nach der Häutung blieben der grobe Beton, die Oberlichtkuppeln und die Werksteintreppe erhalten. Große Fenster, ein Patio und gezielte Blickbezüge bringen auch hier die Natur in den Wohnraum. Von außen sorgt die Komposition von offenen und geschlossenen Flächen der Fassade für eine spannende Erscheinung.

SEHW has given new life to an industrial building in Berlin’s Zehlendorf district. Built as a purpose-specific structure, it was defined by a clear grid with strong beams. After moulting, the rough concrete, skylight domes and stone staircase were preserved. Large windows, a patio and targeted viewpoints bring nature into the living space. From the outside, the composition of open and closed facade surfaces creates an exciting appearance.

Loggien bzw. Erker, die eine stärkere Belichtung der Innenräume erwirken, sind auch das gestalterische Hauptthema im neu gebauten Apartmenthaus Boyenstraße in Berlin. Hinter einer hellen Fassade mit Wechselspiel aus Loggien und Erkern liegen 28 Eigentumswohnungen mit Wohnflächen von 80 bis 200 m². Licht bringt abgesehen von der Fassadenstruktur auch die nach Süden gehende Hofseite, die großzügig mit Terrassen und Balkonen bestückt wurde. Eine gemeinsame Innenhofnutzung vermeidet Großstadtanonymität und orientiert sich somit an der klassischen Form der Berliner Hinterhofkultur.

Harmonie mit der Umgebung, Verknüpfung von alt und neu, vom Außen- und Innenraum und nicht zuletzt eine demografische Einbettung spielen beim SEHW-Wohnungsbau die Hauptrolle(n).

Loggias and bay windows, which provide bright illumination of the internal spaces, are also the main design theme in the newly built apartment block in Berlin’s Boyenstrasse. Behind a bright façade with alternating loggias and bay windows, one can find 28 private apartments ranging from 80 to 200 square metres in size. Apart from the façade structure, light is also brought in from the south-facing yard area that has been generously equipped with terraces and balconies. Communal use of the inside courtyard breaks down the anonymity experienced in large cities and focuses on the classic style of the Berlin courtyard culture.

Harmony with the environment, links between old and new, between outside and inside spaces and, not least, demographic embedding play key roles in SEHW’s residential creations.

Nachhaltigkeit – irgendwo zwischen Zauberwort, Unwort und Haltung Sustainability – somewhere between being a magic word, a misnomer and an approach Haben sich bisher Kameralistik bzw. Investment durchgesetzt, rückt nun der Lebenszyklus des Gebäudes in den Fokus. Die große Frage dabei: Wie sieht nachhaltige Architektur aus, gibt es so etwas wie eine Ästhetik der Nachhaltigkeit?

Once finance and/or investments have been implemented, the focus shifts to the building’s life cycle. And when this happens, the big question is: what does sustainable architecture look like? Does a “sustainability aesthetic” even exist?

In Essen plant SEHW zwei sehr unterschiedliche Schulen. Ein großes Ensemble aus vier Gebäuden, verbunden durch eine kommunikative „Schulstraße“, nach den Kriterien des BNB als Passivhausstandard geplant und realisiert und eine Erweiterung einer kleinen kiezgeprägten Grundschule. Letztere wird mit einer bewegten Dachlandschaft aus vorgefertigten Holzelementen gebaut und ist damit ökologisch in der Materialwahl und ökonomisch durch eine sehr kurze Bauzeit und minimalen Einschränkungen des Schulbetriebs.

SEHW is planning two very different schools in Essen. A large ensemble of four buildings that are connected by a communicative “school street” - planned and realised as a passive house standard according to the criteria - and an expansion of a small primary school with district characteristics. The latter will have an animated roofscape that’s made out of prefabricated wooden elements. The applied materials are environmentally friendly, and the project is economical thanks to the very short construction period and minimal constraints to school operations.

Während in Essen die Bauarbeiten gerade beginnen, entsteht in Berlin bereits der dritte Wohnungsbau von SEHW als Holzsystembau. In kurzer Bauzeit wird das moderne Wohngebäude mit 26 Wohnungen errichtet.

Dabei ist der Ansatz bei diesem Gebäude in Berlin Pankow nicht nur die Verwendung eines grünen Baustoffs, sondern vertical farming als integraler Bestandteil. Aus einer Eigentümergemeinschaft wird eine urbane Gemeinschaft, die mitten in der Stadt ihr eigenes Gemüse und Obst erntet. Einen anderen Schwerpunkt der Nachhaltigkeit verfolgt der Entwurf für einen Neubau im Innovationspark Augsburg.

Er zeichnet sich durch seine hohe Nutzungsflexibilität aus, die das Leben moderner Stadtgesellschaft abbildet mit Trends wie new work, work life balance durch eine Kita, Gastronomie und Events. Mit angestrebter LEED-Platin-Zertifizierung denken die Architekten schon während der ersten Planungsphasen an das zweite oder dritte Leben des Gebäudes.

While construction work is just beginning in Essen, SEHW’s third residential building - a timber construction - is already being built in Berlin. The modern residential building with 26 apartments will be built in a short period of time. The approach to this building in Berlin‘s borough of Pankow is to use green building material and to include vertical farming as an integral component. A community of owners will become an urban community that harvests its own vegetables and fruit in the middle of the city. The concept for a new building in the Augsburg Innovation Park is pursuing a different approach to sustainability. It is characterised by its highly flexible utilisation options that reflect life in modern urban society and the trends it brings with it: new work, work-life balance through a daycare for children, gastronomy and events. With the sought-after LEED platinum certification, the architects are already thinking about the building’s second or third life during the initial planning phases.

Schon mal über Wohnen 4.0 nachgedacht?

Have you ever thought about Living 4.0?

Was bedeuten die Umwälzungen unserer Zeit für die Architektur? Moderne Arbeitsplätze der Industrie 4.0 fordern Flexibilität, der digitale Nomade ist sozial mobil. So ändern sich auch die Anforderungen an das Wohnen.

SEHW hat in Berlin für Nomaden eine Wohngemeinschaft 4.0 realisiert, die als kompakter Baukörper aus vorgefertigten Holz-Elementen in Systembauweise in eine beengte Hinterhofsituation eingefügt wurde. Fünfzig Bewohner teilen sich ein Haus mit vielen Gemeinschaftsbereichen und kleinen Einzelzimmern. Der Schwerpunkt liegt klar auf der Gemeinschaft. Im Zimmer wird geschlafen und eventuell noch gearbeitet, in der Gemeinschaftsküche gekocht und gegessen, zusätzlich gibt eine Gemeinschaftsetage mit Heimkino, Lounge, Waschcafé und einer Terrasse für Sommerfeste.

Erweitert wird dieses Konzept in einem weiteren Projekt um den Gedanken der dritten Orte. Für dieses Minimal-Wohnkonzept stand das Schweizer Taschenmesser Pate. In einem kompakten Servicekern lassen sich Nutzungen ausklappen, falten, ziehen, schieben …. Das bedeutet Kompaktheit und Multifunktionalität. Minimaler Flächenbedarf mit maximaler Ausnutzung und maximaler Raumqualität. Und weil SEHW Mononutzungen zu langweilig sind, haben die Architekten eine Stadt in der Stadt konzipiert. Diese Skala städtischen Lebens findet sich in den öffentlichen und privaten Bereichen von minwin wieder mit Cafés, Spätis, Waschsalon, Co-Working-Spaces und einem nutzbaren Dachgarten.

What do the revolutions of our time mean for architecture? Modern workplaces in industry 4.0 require flexibility; the digital nomad is socially mobile. This also changes living demands.

In Berlin, SEHW realised a “residential community 4.0” for nomads that was systematically integrated into a cramped back courtyard as a compact structure made of prefabricated wooden elements. Fifty residents share a house with many common areas and small single rooms.

Here, the focus is clearly on community living.

The rooms are used for sleeping and doing some work, the communal kitchen is used for cooking and eating, and there’s a common storey with a home cinema, lounge, laundry room and terrace for summer fetes.

This concept is expanded into another project by the idea of the “third place”. The Swiss Army Knife was the inspiration for this minimal living concept. In a compact utility, applications can be folded out and in, pulled, shifted .... In other words, it’s all about compactness and multifunctionality. Minimum space requirements with maximum utilisation and spatial quality. And because single-use applications are too boring for SEHW, the architects have designed a city in the city. This scale of urban life can be found in the public and private areas of “minwin” in the form of cafés, late-night convenience stores, a launderette, co-working spaces and a usable rooftop garden.

Der Rohstoff in den Köpfen – Wissen schafft Stadt Resources of the head – knowledge creates the city Architektur wirkt als Gehäuse, Exponat und Keimzelle gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung von der Industrie- über die Dienstleistungsgesellschaft hin zur Wissensgesellschaft. Entsprechend hoch ist der Wirkungshebel von Architektur, die im Schulbau als zusätzlicher Pädagoge fungiert, als intelligente Arbeitswelt für eine zunehmend digitaler werdende Wirtschaft und als Inkubator für die Entwicklung städtischen Lebens durch Veränderungsprozesse.

Alte Bildungskonzepte werden über den Haufen geworfen, moderne pädagogische Konzepte verlangen neue Lernlandschaften. Stichworte dabei sind Lerncluster, informelle Lernbereiche und der Bezug der Einrichtungen zur städtischen Umgebung statt isolierter Bildungseinrichtungen. SEHW macht Schule. Mehrere Schulprojekte werden derzeit in den Niederlassungen von SEHW geplant

Architecture acts as housing, exhibit, as well as a nucleus of social developments, from the industrial to the service and the knowledge societies. Architecture’s impact is high, and it functions as an additional educator in school construction, as an intelligent working world for an increasingly digital economy and as an incubator for the development of urban life through change processes.

Old educational concepts are being thrown overboard, and modern pedagogical concepts require new learning landscapes. Key concepts that apply to this change include learning clusters, informal learning areas and institutions referencing the urban environment rather than taking an isolated educational approach. SEHW goes to school. Several school projects are currently being planned and realised by SEHW. The architects’

und realisiert. Das größte Schulprojekt der Architekten geht auf einen 1. Platz in einem Wettbewerb zurück. Der Neubau der Gustav-Heinemann Gesamtschule in Essen liegt in einem Problembezirk der Stadt, genau dort, wo Bildung zum Saatgut für neue Perspektiven werden kann. Der klar differenzierte Baukörper reiht die einzelnen Gebäudeteile wie an einer Kette auf und definiert dadurch auch die Außenräume im städtebaulichen Ensemble des Schulcampus. Das Gebäude wird in Passivhausbauweise errichtet und mit BNB „Silber“ zertifiziert.

Auf dem Campus der TU Braunschweig wird mit dem Institut für Physik ein neuer Stadtbaustein entstehen. Die Aufgabe war kniffelig. Die Umgebung städtebaulich heterogen, eine Anhäufung von Solitären, überragt vom TU-Hochhaus aus den Sechziger Jahren, mit unklaren Wegeverbindungen zwischen den Häusern. SEHWs Antwort darauf: Stadträumlich für Ordnung sorgen, eine klare Achse als Sicht- und Wegebeziehung zum Hochhaus und eine selbstbewusste Positionierung zur Straße hin. Zum Campus formuliert der Neubau einen Platz mit Aufenthaltsqualität. Das Gebäude selbst ist ebenfalls gebaute Ordnung. Es wirkt wie ein physikalischer Apparat und trägt damit die Nutzung nach außen, vermittelt stadträumlich und lädt zum Durchqueren ein. Die Fassade mit ihrem Betonraster wirkt streng, ist aber lediglich der Rahmen für das, was im Haus passiert. Große Fensterfläche geben den Weg frei, den Studierenden und Forschenden über die Schulter zu schauen. Im besten Sinn ein Schaufenster der Wissenschafts- und Hochschullandschaft.

Ein anderes Schulprojekt als Grundschule mit Hort und Sporthalle liegt in Potsdam. Auch dieses Projekt geht auf einen 1. Platz in einem Wettbewerb zurück. Der dreiflügelige Baukörper sorgt für klare Zuordnungen im Außenbereich und verzahnt das Gebäude mit der Umgebung. Gleichzeitig gewährleistet die Gebäudefigur eine effektive Ausnutzung des zur Verfügung stehenden Grundstücks. Die einzelnen Klassen- und Gruppenräume reihen sich als offene Lerncluster um begrünte Innenhöfe. So ist eine einfache Orientierung im Gebäude möglich und für gute Belichtung der Räume gesorgt. SEHW konzipiert nicht nur Lernräume für die Kleinen, sondern auch für die Großen.

Ob in Essen, in Braunschweig, in Potsdam oder an einem anderen Ort: Alle Wissensbauten von SEHW eint, dass sie nicht für sich selbst stehen, sondern eine Strahlkraft nach außen haben in den Block, ins Quartier, in die Stadt. Wo junge Menschen lernen, studieren, leben, arbeiten, gründen, wachsen, Gesellschaft weiter bewegen, verändert dies das Umfeld. Wissen schafft Stadt!

biggest school project was recently awarded first place in a competition: the Gustav-Heinemann Gesamtschule, a newly-built comprehensive school in Essen, is located in a problem area of the city – just the kind of place where education can become a gateway for new perspectives.

The clearly differentiated building structure strings the individual parts of the building together and thus also defines the exterior spaces in the urban ensemble of the school campus. The building will be built as a passive house construction and given a “silver” certification from the BNB. On TU Braunschweig’s campus, the Institute of Physics will form a new city component. The task was tricky, however, given that the surroundings are heterogenous with regards to urban development, an accumulation of solitary buildings towered over by the TU high-rise building from the sixties, with confusing pathway connections between the buildings. SEHW’s answer to this: to tidy up urbanistically, building a clear visual axis and clear pathway connection to the high-rise building and a confident positioning towards the street.

For the campus, the new building is a space for extensive residing. The building itself showcases constructed neatness. It appears like a physical apparatus and thus brings the building’s intended use to the outside, mediates in an urbanistic sense and invites for strolling through. The façade, with its concrete grid appears somewhat strict, but is merely the frame for the things that happen inside the building. Large windows make it possible to look over the students’ shoulders. In the best sense, the building acts as a showcase into the science and higher education landscape.

Another school project – a primary school which offers after-school supervision and houses a sports hall – is located in Potsdam. This project was also awarded first place in a competition.

The three-winged structure has a thoughtfully designed exterior that meshes the building with its surroundings. At the same time, the building’s outline guarantees that all available land is effectively utilised. The individual classrooms and group rooms are arranged as open learning clusters around green courtyards. This makes it easy to find one’s way around the building and provides good lighting for all of the rooms. SEHW not only designs learning rooms for children, but for adults, as well.

Whether in Essen, in Braunschweig, in Potsdam or anywhere else, all of SEHW’s educational constructions are united in the the fact that they don’t just represent themselves, but rather have an outwards radiance – into the block, the quarter, or into the city. Where young people learn, study, live, work, found, grow, or move society further, the surroundings get altered. Knowledge creates the city!

Wolfgang Maennig, 1988 Olympiasieger im Rudern, heute Professor für Wirtschaftswissenschaften mit Schwerpunkt Immobilienökonomie und Geschäftspartner von SEHW, prägte den Begriff des ‚Bilbao‘-Effektes – das heißt die fundamentale Aufwertung von Orten durch einzigartige, den Menschen und Städten zugewandte, bewegende Architektur mittels disruptiver, innovativer Strategien und Konzepte. Das Ziel von SEHW ist es, in gemeinsamen Entwicklungsprozessen mit Bauherren und Investoren strategisch relevante, sozial und wirtschaftlich wirkungsvolle Konzepte mit hohem Innovations- und Renditepotenzial zu planen und umzusetzen.

Wolfgang Maennig, 1988 Olympic champion in rowing, is a professor of economics with a focus on real estate and also a business partner of SEHW. He coined the notion of the ‘Bilbao’ effect, which describes the fundamental upgrading of places through unique, people- and city-orientated, moving architecture, by means of disruptive, innovative strategies and concepts.

The more complex our systems become overall, the more in-demand are our competencies, passion and curiosity. SEHW actively advises strategically and conceptually in these fields of developments and contexts.

Hereby, the areas are broad, the potential high, the needs huge: knowledge society and knowledge economy, common good economy and social impact models, start-up companies and digital economy, collaborative models, as well as the silver generation. Politics and startups, old and new: how SEHW conceives modern working spaces

Ob Ministerien oder Kreativunternehmen, ob Umbau oder Neubau: Die Architekten von SEHW formulieren die architektonische Sprache für heutige Arbeitswelten unermüdlich neu und machen sich gleichzeitig bereits Gedanken über jene von morgen.

Whether it is a ministry office or a creative business, renovation or new building: the architects at SEHW are tirelessly reformulating the architectural language for today’s world of work, whilst at the same time thinking about the future.

Schon in den 90ern begann die Zusammenarbeit mit der brandenburgischen Regierung, die fruchtbar begann und fruchtbar geblieben ist.

SEHW began working with the government of the state of Brandenburg in the 1990s. This relationship started out fruitful and has remained so ever since.

Der erste Streich, der Einbau einer modernen Bibliothek in den alten Kadettensaal der Potsdamer Staatskanzlei, gelang mit Verve und futuristisch modernen Linien, das Ganze innerhalb eines klassizistischen Altbaus. Eingangs - und Informationsgebäude kamen in den Nullerjahren hinzu. Eine ähnliche Fusion von alt und neu im größeren Maßstab gelang 2007 mit Umbauten für das Ministerium des Inneren in Potsdam. Hier wurden unter Rücksicht auf Denkmalschutzvorgaben, durch hohe Sicherheitsanforderungen und energetische Sanierung eine luftige Kopplung von alt und neu geschaffen, die ihresgleichen sucht. So wurde etwa mit der Angliederung eines auf das Wesentliche reduzierten Treppenhauses in Sichtbeton, an ein Gebäude des Rokoko von Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, ein architektonischer Spannungsbogen geschaffen, der gleichzeitig das Alte auf einen Sockel stellt und das Neue deutlich zeigt.

First came the installation of a modern library into the old cadet hall of the chancellery building in Potsdam. This was done with verve and modern futuristic lines, entirely inside a classical old building.

Reception and information buildings were added in the noughties.

A similar fusion of old and new on a large scale was pulled off in 2007 when alterations were made to the Interior Ministry building in Potsdam. An airy union of old and new was created whilst respecting the listed building regulations and high security requirements along with an intensive restoration work. For instance, the incorporation of a significantly reduced concrete stairwell into a rococo building

by Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff created a dramatic architectural arch that simultaneously placed the old on a pedestal and clearly highlighted the new.

Die neueste Zusammenarbeit bildet ein von SEHW als „Minister-WG“ betitelter Neubaukomplex, in dem Umwelt – und Familienministerium zusammen untergebracht wurden.

Umgeben von altehrwürdiger Potsdamer Stadtarchitektur und mit einem Fingerzeig auf die angrenzenden Havelauen bildet der Entwurf eine ästhetische Verknüpfungsfunktion. Die zunächst schlicht anmutende Formalität wird unterbrochen von einer Vielschichtigkeit in Grundriss und Höhenentwicklung. Während an der Straßenseite zum Beispiel die umgebenden Traufhöhen berücksichtigt werden, hebt sich das Gebäude im Blockinneren.

Warme erdige Töne, Holz und Glas vermitteln Zugänglichkeit und eine optische Einladung an die Öffentlichkeit.

Eine ministerielle Nutzung soll auch der für das Bundesamt für Bauwesen und Raumordnung geplante Verwaltungsbau in Berlin Mitte erfahren. Durch architektonische Schließung der umliegenden Blockbebauung entsteht in Nachbarschaft des BND und des Schiffahrtskanals ein Neubau mit Arbeitsflächen unterschiedlicher Offenheit, einer Kindertagsstätte und einer öffentlichen Cafeteria. Ein Berlin-typischer, großzügiger Innenhof und eine interessante Fassadenstruktur durch monolithisch schräg gestellte Werksteinelemente runden den Entwurf ab.

Zukunftsweisendes Grün zeigt das SEHW-Kleid der Fassade für ein Start-Up in der jungen Berliner Brunnenviertel-Szene. Der Neubau orientiert sich in der Geschossigkeit an der Höhe der denkmalgeschützten Bebauung der Umgebung: Das oberste Geschoss wurde als Staffelgeschoss ausgerichtet und tritt damit optisch zurück.

SEHW’s latest collaboration takes the form of a new-build shared ministry building that will house the ministries for environment and families. The design aesthetically links the surrounding grand old architecture of Potsdam with a hint to the adjacent wetlands of the river Havel. The seemingly simple formality is interrupted by the complexity of the ground plan and the building heights. The streetfacing side of the building, for example, respects the height of the neighbouring eaves, whereas the inside of the building raises up.

Warm earth tones, wood and glass lend the building an amenable feeling and provide a visual invitation to the public.

The planned administration building for the federal office for construction and planning in central Berlin will also see ministerial use. With the architectural closure of the surrounding perimeter block development, a new building is going up near the Federal Intelligence Service and shipping canal with working areas of varied openness, a day care centre and a public cafeteria. A large courtyard, typical for Berlin, and an interesting façade structure using monolithic angled ashlar elements round off the design.

SEHW has given the façade a futuristic green colour for a startup in the young Brunnenviertel district of Berlin. The floors of this new building focus on the height of the surrounding listed buildings: the top floor has been developed as a visually set-back penthouse.

Catering and event spaces at ground level supplement the generous office spaces of the upper floors. This created a modern building in a lively Berlin neighbourhood that is being redefined daily and has become a new home to the creative scene.

Gastronomie und Veranstaltungsräume zu ebener Erde ergänzen die großzügigen Büroflächen der oberen Geschosse. So entsteht ein moderner Baukörper in einem lebendigen Berliner Kiez, der sich täglich neu definiert und ein neues Zuhause für die Kreativszene werden wird.

A festival of colours: SEHW and the generations

Demografie, ihre Erforschung und Analyse, bis hin zur Umsetzung der daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse, bilden einen der Hauptpfeiler der SEHW Projektentwicklung.

The research and analysis of demographics through to implementation of the findings are a core pillar of project development for SEHW.

Farblich einladend präsentiert sich zum Beispiel das medizinische Zentrum Seekirchen, ein Mehrgenerationenhaus nördlich von Salzburg in Österreich. Allein die Fassade wirkt wie aus einem frühlingshaften Blätterwald entnommen und ihr frisches Grün symbolisiert die reine Lebensfreude.

The multi-generational medical centre in Seekirchen, north of Salzburg in Austria, is colourfully inviting. The façade alone feels as if it was taken straight from a forest in springtime with its fresh green colours symbolising the pure joy of living.

Einladend gestaltet ist nicht nur der Vorplatz sondern auch das gesamte Interieur. Hier erinnert erst einmal nichts an Krankenhaus oder Pflegestation als „Abstellplatz“, im Gegenteil: Freundliche, farblich kräftige Töne holen die Natur und das Leben ins Haus.

Transparente Flächen bieten Durchblicke und den Eindruck von Weite, Licht und Luft.

Die Einrichtung ist auf 80 Pflegeplätze ausgelegt und hat das gestalterische Ziel, einen Wohngemeinschafts-Charakter zu spiegeln. So tritt die Idee der Gemeinsamkeit an die Stelle der oft empfundenen Isolation in entsprechenden Institutionen. Loggien und überdachte Durchgänge laden das Außen nach Innen ein und bieten den Aufenthalt im Freien, im geschützten und leicht zugänglichen Umfeld. Auf beiden Etagen gibt es außerdem eine begrünte Terrasse.

Sowohl Einrichtungen für Therapie als auch Arztpraxen und eine Ganztagsbetreuungseinrichtung für die Schulkinder der Umgebung sind in die innere Gebäudeaufteilung integriert. Depot, Technikzentralen und Tiefgarage wurden im durchgehenden Keller untergebracht. Ökologische und baubiologische Kriterien wie Raumklima und Energieeffizienz wurden in die Planung einbezogen und so steht das Gebäude als ein ortsintegriertes Beispiel für modernes Bauen.

Das Thema Farbe steht auch im Projekt der bilingualen Kita Phorms in Berlin-Mitte ganz im Vordergrund.

Die Umgestaltung eines alten Industriegebäudes, welches auch Grundschule und Gymnasium vom gleichen Träger beherbergt, integriert die vorhandenen Kriterien wie hohe Decken und große Räume und sorgt für eine Vielfalt an Erlebnisräumen. Diese sind jeweils durch ein Thema bestimmt und entsprechend farblich und künstlerisch gestaltet. So erinnert der Eingangsbereich an eine Unterwasserwelt, während ein Wüstenkamel den Weg zu den Waschräumen zeigt.

Die verschiedenen Habitats Dschungel, Wüste, Meer und Erdreich werden farbenfroh an Wand und Decke illustriert. Sie bieten Ambiente und zugleich Orientierung in der großzügigen Raumverteilung und im langen Flur, von dem die verschiedenen Nutzungsräume abgehen.

Für die Baumaßnahmen war eine Spanne von lediglich sechs Wochen während der Schulferien vorgegeben und die DenkmalschutzAspekte des Gebäudes boten eine weitere Herausforderung.

SEHW vollzog hier ein kleines Kunststück mit Rücksichtnahme sowohl auf die baulichen Gegebenheiten als auch die demografische Entwicklung eines Bezirkes, der sich durch rasante Geburtsraten und ein bilinguales Umfeld definiert.

The forecourt along with the interiors have been designed in a highly inviting manner. The hospital and wards do not evoke initial feelings that this is just a place where you park up and get treatment. On the contrary: friendly, colourful and powerful tones bring nature and life into the building. Transparent surfaces provide views throughout the interior and give a spacious, light and airy impression.

The institution provides 80 beds with a design goal of feeling like a shared home. This brings about an idea of community instead of the usual feelings of isolation that accompany such institutions. Bay windows and covered walkways invite an outdoor atmosphere on the inside and provide an open place to sit that is protected and easy to access. Each of the two floors also have a leafy terrace.

Therapeutic areas and medical practices as well as an all-day care centre for children are all integrated into the internal layout of the building. Storage, technical centres and underground parking has been accommodated in the basement that runs the length of the building.

Ecological and construction-biological criteria such as air conditioning and energy efficiency were included in the planning, making this building an example of how modern construction can integrate itself into the location.

The theme of colour was also central to the bilingual Phorms kindergarten project in central Berlin.

The transformation of an old industrial building, which housed a primary school and secondary school, integrated the existing criteria such as high ceilings and large spaces and provided for a wide range of experiences in these spaces. Each space has its own theme and was designed with a corresponding use of colour.

The entrance area is designed as an undersea world whilst a desert camel points the way to the lavatories.

Each of the different habitats, jungle, desert, earth and sea are depicted with bright colours on the walls and ceilings. These provide ambience and orientation in the large distribution of spaces and in the long hallway from which the various rooms are accessed.

Just six weeks were given for the construction works, which took place during the school holidays. The listed aspects of the building presented a further challenge.

The architects at SEHW accomplished a small work of art with respect for both structural circumstances and the demographic development of the area, which is defined by a rapidly increased birth rate in a bilingual environment.

Unter der Haube und Spaß für’s Auge: SEHW, Kultur- und Freizeiträume

Under the covers and a treat for the eyes: SEHW, cultural and leisure spaces

Kultur und Erholung sind Pfeiler für ein positives Lebensgefühl und auch diese brauchen Raum, wortwörtlich! Und so hat SEHW sich unter anderem zum Ziel gemacht, diese Räume so schlüssig wie möglich zu gestalten, mit einem besonderen Akzent auf der ästhetischen Kommunikation.

Culture and recreation are pillars for a positive attitude to life and these things need space - quite literally! SEHW made it a goal, amongst others, to design these spaces to be as coherent as possible with a special accent of aesthetic communication.

Im Museum zur Geschichte von Christen und Juden werden nach Wilhelm von Humboldt’s Motto „Geschichte ist nichts anderes als der Umgang mit der Welt“ 200 Jahre Zusammenleben der beiden Konfessionen in der Baden-Württembergischen Stadt dokumentiert.

Die im Schloss Grosslaupheim untergebrachte Sammlung wurde 2000 eröffnet. Der letzte Bauabschnitt hatte den Anspruch, als Ergänzung und Kontrast zur chronologisch aufgebauten Dauerausstellung die Dokumentation von Einzelschicksalen in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen.

Hier kam nun SEHW zum Zug. Der Anspruch war, eine ästhetische Sprache zu finden, die einen frischen Zugang zu historisch relevanten Ereignissen bietet. So kamen Gestaltungsideen wie eine virtuelle Dinner-Tafel und ein monolithisch wirkender Einbau mit interessantem Innenleben zum Einsatz. Als innovatives und symbolträchtiges Highlight bietet der letzte Raum die Möglichkeit einer Interaktion des Besuchers mit den Exponaten: Überdimensionale Hauben tragen Bild und Namen von jeweils für den Ort wichtigen Frauen beider Konfessionen. Beim Darunterstellen ertönt die jeweilige Lebensgeschichte, mitsamt ihren oft immensen Zäsuren und Beeinträchtigungen, und der Besucher kann sich buchstäblich in den begrenzten Raum hineinfühlen, der den Frauen zu ihren Lebzeiten „zur Verfügung“ stand.

Erholung bieten abgesehen von Kultur und Natur natürlich auch Wellness und gute Ernährung. In Zusammenarbeit mit einer britischen Firma hat SEHW ein Spa-Design entwickelt, das seinesgleichen sucht. Klare Schnitte, zurückhaltendes Design und die ästhetische Beschränkung auf ruhige Flächen in angenehmen Farben, ein Markenzeichen bei SEHW, bieten Körper und Auge die wohlverdiente erholsame Umgebung.

Eine erfrischende Farbgestaltung zeichnet auch die neue Kaffeebar auf dem Campus der Technischen Hochschule Wildau aus. Auf dem Gelände eines ehemaligen Lokomotivenwerkes hat SEHW hier bereits mehrere Lehr- und Wohngebäude gestaltet (siehe Artikel zu „Forschung und Bildung“). Die im Nachhinein hinzugefügte Kaffeebar befindet sich im Foyer des HörsaalZentrums in der von SEHW umgebauten, denkmalgeschützten Werkshalle. Hier ist nun Platz für zahlreiche Studenten, die sich auf kurzen Wegen zwischen Seminaren und Vorlesungen erfrischen können. Die Form – und Farbsprache des Gebäudes wird hier wieder aufgenommen, das frische Design lädt zum Verschnaufen ein und unterstützt die Regeneration.

The museum of the history of Christianity and Judaism documents 200 years of these two religions living side-by-side in BadenWürttemberg using Wilhelm von Humboldt’s motto: “history is nothing else than the dealings with the world”. The collection is housed in the Grosslaupheim Palace and opened to the public in 2000. The final section of construction was required to focus on the documentation of individual destinies as a complement to, and contrast with, the chronologically organised permanent exhibit.

SEHW got its chance here. The requirement was to find an aesthetic language that would offer a new perspective on historically relevant events. Ideas such as a virtual dinner tray and monolithic display cabinet units were used. An innovative and symbolic highlight is provided in the final room where visitors can interact with the exhibits: multi-dimensional covers carry images and names of important local female figures from each religion.

When visitors stand underneath, the life story of each individual, including the often immense turning points and setbacks in their lives, is described. In the limited space, visitors can literally feel the lives of the women.

Recreation comes not just from culture and nature, but also from wellness and good nutrition. In cooperation with a British company, SEHW developed a design for a unique spa. Clear cuts, reserved design and aesthetic limitation on quiet areas in pleasing colours – a trade mark of SEHW - provide a relaxing environment, both visually and physically.

A refreshing use of colour also makes the new coffee bar on the campus of the university in Wildau stand out. On the grounds of the former locomotive factory, SEHW had already designed several teaching and residential buildings (see article on ‘research and education’). The coffee bar was later installed in the foyer of the lecture theatre centre in the listed factory hall that was renovated

by SEHW. There is now space for many students to grab some refreshments on their way between seminars and lectures. The language of form and colour in the building was picked up for this project too. The fresh design invites you to take a quick break and supports regeneration.

For SEHW, a clear language of form in connection with fresh colour tones awakens not just the senses, but it also possesses an aesthetic communicative element that is shaped by constant dealings with the environment and people.

Eine klare Formsprache in Verbindung mit frischen Farbtönen weckt bei SEHW nicht nur die Sinne, sie birgt auch ein ästhetisch kommunikatives Element, geprägt von einer ständigen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Umfeld und den Menschen.
