Our planet is in trouble. A flood of plastic is polluting the oceans, more and more species are going extinct, climate change is omnipresent and unsustainable ways of life are threatening people and animals all over the globe. It has become very evident that each one of us needs to do our share to help the world, as it could simply be too late all too soon. Luckily, many governments and big corporations are starting to wake up and joining the many individuals already trying to live more sustainable lives and finding solutions to the big problems the planet currently faces.

One of these smart solutions can be found in Switzerland’s Zermatt. Here, pioneering measures to protect the environment have recently been introduced. Since 14 June, the municipality in the canton of Valais has been the first place in Switzerland to process recycled plastic to resurface a road junction. Pretty great idea, right? Using technology from an award-winning company, the mechanism allows plastic waste that would have otherwise gone to incineration or landfill to be used to fill potholes on streets. Our writer Hannah Krolle found out more in our special feature on this interesting topic.

Furthermore, travelling can also be done in a more sustainable manner. Choose the train over the plane and head to one of the many eco-friendly hotels or resorts across the German-speaking region. In this magazine, we take a look at some of these green hotels and tell you why you don’t need to miss out on a luxurious holiday in order to help save the environment.

Interiors made for living destilat stands for remarkable interior design. At the same time, however, the company has become renowned for operating in a pleasantly calm and relaxed manner. International juries have become very aware of destilat projects, and the list of awards the company has won includes the German Design Award, ‘Österreichischer Staatspreis Design’, Archilovers, Iconic Award, Big See Interior Design Award and the AAP - Architecture Master Prize from the US. Discover Germany wanted to find out what makes their designs stand out so much, and what they look for when defining spaces and creating moods.

Asking destilat founders Harald Hatschenberger, Henning Weimer and Thomas Neuber what they first and foremost want to achieve with their designs, the answer is: “To enable people to blossom in their own four walls and at their 10 | Issue 77 | August 2019

place of work, to create space for personal needs and efficient work processes, for pleasant shop environments and relaxed living. Also, to make the most of any given space and available budget. To do that, you need to develop a sense for

what your client wants and be curious about what makes people tick as well as how brands function.”

The destilat team does not design for the sake of form, but each interior design is based on usage and the personality of the individual client or end user. The residents, guests or staff for whom work or living spaces are being designed are always at the centre of everything: “It’s no coincidence that our apartments, hotels, shops and offices are as individual as our clients. It is not our designs that are the measure of all things, but the people that live, holiday or do business in them.”

Interiors, die Raum fürs Leben schaffen destilat macht aussergewöhnliche Innenarchitekturen und gibt sich selbst unaufgeregt und gelassen. Dabei bleiben ihre Projekte auch internationalen Jurys nicht verborgen: Die Liste der Auszeichnungen reicht von German Design Award, Österreichischer Staatspreis Design, Archilovers, Iconic Award und Big See Interior Design Award bis zu AAP – Architecture Master Prize aus den USA. Wir wollen wissen, was ihre Designs besonders macht und wonach sie suchen, wenn sie Räume definieren und Stimmungen kreieren.

Fragt man Harald Hatschenberger, Henning Weimer und Thomas Neuber – die Gründer von destilat nach ihrem primären Design-Anliegen heißt es: „Sich entfalten zu können in den eigenen vier Wänden und am Arbeitsplatz; Raum zu schaffen für persönliche Bedürfnisse und effiziente Arbeitsabläufe, angenehme Verkaufssituationen und entspanntes Wohnen. Und aus räumlichen Gegebenheiten und verfügbaren Budgets das Optimum herauszuholen. Dafür muss man ein Gespür fürs Gegenüber entwickeln, neugierig darauf sein, wie Menschen ticken und Marken funktionieren.“ Entworfen wird nicht der reinen Form halber – die Innenarchitekturen von destilat sind eindeutig aus der Nutzung und Persönlichkeit der Menschen heraus entwickelt.

Im Mittelpunkt aller Design-Überlegungen stehen die Bewohner, Gäste oder Mitarbeiter, für die sie Spiel-, Arbeits- und Lebensräume

entwerfen. „Nicht zufällig sind unsere Apartments, Hotels, Shops und Büros so individuell wie unsere Auftraggeber. Weil nicht unsere Designs das Maß der Dinge sind, sondern die Menschen, die in ihnen wohnen, arbeiten, Urlaub und Geschäfte machen.“

Persönlichkeiten, die ihren Ideen freien Lauf lassen „Unsere Kunden sind Menschen und Unternehmen, die Lust haben Charakter zu zeigen und sich trauen, Dinge gemeinsam mit uns neu zu denken. Zum Mutigsein müssen wir selten jemanden überreden – unsere Kunden kommen zu uns weil sie ein wenig anders sind und diese Einzigartigkeit in Architektur übersetzt wissen wollen.“ Wo solch ein Designverständnis geteilt wird und die nötige Vertrauensbasis herrscht, sind Innovationen nicht weit. Mitunter hat destilat schon echte Benchmarks gesetzt:

Lingenhel – eine Käserei mitten in Wien, die Shop, Bar und Restaurant in sich vereint und Designjurys von Europa bis Amerika begeistert. Lounge Z – eine Relaxzone im James Bond Look für die Garage eines Automobil-Connaisseurs um die feine Sportwagensammlung in entspannter Atmosphäre betrachten und diskutieren zu können.

1100 m2 mediterranes Lebensgefühl mit Blick auf den Kreml – die Dachterrasse des Ritz-Carlton Moskau hat destialt wie eine Plaza inszeniert, die Besucher aus aller Welt anzieht. Den Dachstuhl einer historischen Wörthersee-Villa hat sich Penthouse V erobert – das Feriendomizil einer Großfamilie offeriert offene Raumgrenzen, Gemütlichkeit und Ruhe. destilat ist auch bekannt für markante Corporate Architecture Konzepte – wie jenes für Lohmann & Rauscher, einem der führenden Anbieter innovativer Medizin- und Hygieneprodukte – das Markenwerte transportiert und Leadership signalisiert.

Letting creativity run free “Our clients are people and companies that like to express their character and are not afraid to rethink things together with us. We hardly ever need to convince someone to be courageous in that sense – our clients work with us because they’re a bit different and want to express their uniqueness in architecture.”

Such shared understanding of design and the necessary trust are very conducive for innovation and destilat has created some standout spaces in its time. Lingenhel, for instance, is a cheese dairy in the centre of Vienna that combines a shop, bar and restaurant and has enthused design juries in Europe and the US alike. Or Lounge Z, a James Bond-style lounge in the garage of a car enthusiast, created to enjoy and discuss the exquisite car collection in a relaxed atmosphere.

There’s also the 1,100-square-metre rooftop terrace of the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow, which provides Mediterranean flair as well as views of the Kremlin and attracts visitors from around the world. The Penthouse V project has converted the attic of a historic mansion at the Wörthersee lake into the holiday residence of an extended family, featuring open, calm and cosy spaces. destilat is also known for its distinctive corporate projects, such as for Lohmann & Rauscher, a leading provider of innovative medical and hygiene products, with designs that express the company’s brand values and signal leadership.

and more is over. Our kind of luxury is not about showing off but offers the freedom to opt for a more moderate understatement.” Lounge T, for example, is a deliberately simple space in the former workshop of an Alpine chalet in Tyrol that subtly integrates the new into a historic structure, playing with the patina of special materials. “We look very carefully at established and historic structures, to assess how we can, for example, keep and harmoniously add to a wooden floor that was already used by the great-grandfather.”

In Vienna, the strict spatial structures of a classic period property were broken up in favour of a modern living style: Apartment H&M is open and light-flooded while keeping its turn of the century flair, and Archilovers named it ‘Best Project 2015’. destilat is not only recognised for its high-end projects, but also knows very well how to work with smaller budgets.

tain rebellious spirit and destilat has translated the culinary philosophy of the two young, award-winning chefs into an interior design that gives the listed building finesse and earthiness in equal measures, and it was recognised with the German Design Award. destilat has been operating for more than ten years as an interior design outfit with offices in Vienna and Linz. However, they would not describe their work as typically Austrian: “We are known for thinking outside the box and we also travel a lot, be it for business purposes, visiting trade fairs or working on international projects, or privately. We discover lots of exciting things wherever we go that inspire us. We are incredibly connected nowadays, but really experiencing something just cannot be replaced.”

In this context, the destilat team is thinking about “what’s real” and what we really need, as well as about how their designs are produced: “We prefer to use natural materials that don’t need to be replaced just because they have a little scratch but instead become more beautiful and tell a story through such traces of use and patina. Borders are not important for us, neither in a design nor in a geographic sense. We have, of course, realised most of our projects in Austria, however, our designs can also be found in Russia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Germany and Spain.”

mehr und größer sind jedoch vorbei. Luxus hat bei uns nichts mit Protzen zu tun, sondern bietet die Freiheit, sich auch für die „leisen Töne“ des Understatements entscheiden zu können.“

Seit über zehn Jahren sind destilat als Interior-Designer mit Büros in Wien und Linz aktiv, als typisch österreichisch würden sie ihre Arbeit aber nicht sehen.

Bewusst simpel zeigt sich Lounge T, die in die ehemalige Werkstatt eines Tiroler Alpenchalets einzieht, Neues mit viel Feingefühl in die historische Bausubstanz integriert und mit der Patina besonderer Materialien spielt.

„Wir sind bekannt dafür, gerne über den Tellerrand hinauszuschauen und auch viel unterwegs – beruflich auf den großen Messen und für internationale Projekte, aber auch privat als Reisende entdecken wir überall spannende Dinge, die uns inspirieren.

Heutzutage ist man unglaublich vernetzt, aber der Aspekt des unmittelbaren Erlebens kann nicht ersetzt werden.“

„Gewachsene Strukturen und historische Bausubstanz schauen wir uns ganz genau an – wie wir den Holzboden, der schon dem Urgroßvater als Basis für sein Schaffen diente, erhalten und stimmig ergänzen können.“

architekten deshalb ebenso wie die Art und Weise der Produktion ihrer Designs. „Wir verwenden bevorzugt Naturmaterialien, Werkstoffe die nicht beim ersten Kratzer ausgetauscht werden müssen sondern durch ihre Gebrauchsspuren und Patina immer schöner werden und Geschichten erzählen.

Und Grenzen haben weder im gestalterischen Sinn noch im nationalen eine große Bedeutung für uns. Die meisten unserer Projekte haben wir natürlich in Österreich realisiert, aber auch in Russland,, Kroatien, Slowenien, Ungarn, Deutschland und Spanien kann man unsere Designs finden.“ www.destilat.com

Die strengen Raumstrukturen einer klassischen Wiener Altbauwohnung wurden zugunsten eines modernen Wohnstils aufgelöst – Apartment H&M zeigt sich offen, lichtdurchflutet und dennoch im Jahrhundertwende-Flair und wurde von archilovers zum Best Project 2015 gekürt. destilat gewinnt nicht nur mit High-End Projekten Anerkennung, sondern weiß auch mit Low-Budgets umzugehen. Im Rossbarth – einem Speiselokal in der Linzer Altstadt – wird bodenständig bis ungehorsam gekocht. destilat hat die kulinarische Philosophie der beiden jungen Haubenköche in eine Innenarchitektur übersetzt, welche die denkmalgeschützten Gemäuer mit Finesse und Erdigkeit erfüllt und dafür den German Design Award gewonnen.

Rattan furniture Gone are the days where rattan furniture was only sold in garden centres. Rattan

has made it into homes all over the world and is loved by interior influencers all over Instagram right now. While this is yet another trend that had already gained fame last year, it has proven its worth in interiors all over the world, still today, for a number of reasons: it’s gorgeous, natural and gives your home an easy but impactful makeover.

Velvet furnishings Velvet has been back for a while now but we simply can’t get over this beautiful interior trend. The durable, tactile and soft fabric, with an undeniable hint of decadence, impresses with its texture and is available in almost any colour imaginable, so that you can effortlessly blend this luxurious trend with your existing interior.

“We always come up with an idea!” states KJUBIK founder Katja Schuster. With a knack for unlocking potential, the experienced interior designer often finds herself in a creative mood, even when on holiday.

„Uns fällt immer etwas ein!” erklärt Katja Schuster, Gründerin von KJUBIK Innenarchitektur. Ihr Blick für versteckte Potentiale resultiert oftmals in einem kontinuierlichen kreativen Zustand, selbst in den Ferien.

Sometimes, the hotel room thus becomes subject to a makeover. “It just never stops,” explains the designer, for whom her passion became her profession. After 14 years on the job, she decided to take the plunge and open her own business. A road trip for your ears:

Max Herre takes us on a poetic journey between past and present Athen, the new album by German rapper Max Herre, is coming out at the end of August. It musically captures a mesmerising sense of longing – for past times, for long-forgotten dreams and for what could have been. This album is an emotional and musical milestone for the hip-hop artist from Stuttgart. In revisiting a significant place of his past, Max Herre has arrived at a new destination and re-discovered a sense of creative urgency.

For over 20 years, Max Herre has shaped German hip-hop and R&B. He entered the stage at a time when hip-hop culture was still inventing itself in Germany, and much has changed since these early days. The 46-year-old rapper has become a husband, a father and what could be called a hip-hop veteran, although as he points out quickly it’s nothing more than a label. He is simply part of that very first German hip-hop generation, so all eyes are now on him to see what ‘grown-up’ rap could look (and sound) like. The truth is, that Max Herre is and has always been a versatile musician, who incorporates

different influences from Bob Marley to Stevie Wonder and, of course, German legend Udo Lindenberg.

“I was absolutely convinced Udo Lindenberg waved at me” “The first big concert I went to as a kid was Udo – in 1984,” Max remembers fondly. “I was absolutely convinced that he waved at me. In Stuttgart’s big Schleyer-hall and amongst all those people, he picked me and waved – or so I thought. It’s funny, because thirty years later I actually found myself performing with Udo on that very same stage. Of

course, I told him about that special moment as a kid. I have no idea why I was so convinced back then, but it impacted me a lot.”

As a teenager Max already knew he wanted to do music professionally, but he finished school and enrolled in university anyways. Or at least that was what his parents thought. He admits: “I didn’t actually attend uni – but I only told my father about that ten years later when my career had already taken off.”

From Freundeskreis to the solo career The big breakthrough happened in 1997 with the hit single A-N-N-A, when Max was the frontman of the band Freundeskreis. During that time, the concept of the FK-Allstars, a collaboration of over 15 artists such as Afrob, Sékou and Max’ future wife Joy Denalane also emerged. After a few years, his solo career happened fairly organically.

“We all came from a different musical context, so it was always clear that we eventually wanted to explore different avenues. The way we produced our music also changed and became a lot more sophisticated,” he recounts. “I remember when we moved from our little studio in a former garden shed into a professional studio in the centre of Stuttgart. Suddenly, we had a lot more opportunities and we were able to record big bands, violin orchestras and choirs.

We were growing with our craft. I also got together with Joy, who I wanted to artistically ‘meet’ as the soul singer she is and in addition to that I moved to Berlin in 2002, so there were many new beginnings anyways. But it was never a conscious decision to stop the band and do a solo career – the others and I just followed what we found musically interesting at that time. The solo career developed from that organically.”

Seven years have passed since his last solo studio album Hallo Welt! was released.

However, during that time Max enjoyed a lot of success with his MTV-Unplugged album, which went platinum. He was also awarded ‘Hip-hop artist of 2014’ by the prestigious Echo Music Prize in Germany.

Searching for the new album in far-away lands After that, it got a little quiet around the rapper, who spent time in Tel Aviv and Addis Ababa. His plan for the next album was initially very different, as he explains: “My journey first took me somewhere else entirely because I wanted to explore spiritual jazz and ethio jazz – music that you wouldn’t traditionally associate with hip-hop. I had the idea to follow the music you once found on an old vinyl, meet the artists behind it in their country and then tell their story together in a song. So, I didn’t actually want to make an album about my own journey.”

He pauses and laughs:“It was a really great plan, to be honest. Some wonderful music developed from it, but in the end, I had trouble writing the lyrics. I thought I was going to become a musical journalist and capture those stories – but I couldn’t do it justice. So, after all those journeys I came back home and let the quiet around me settle in. I reflected on what it feels like when 24 | Issue 77 | August 2019

big plans like that one fail. When you look inwards and ask yourself what the stories within you are, the ones that haven’t been told yet. They are hiding away in tiny cracks of your mind and they have never been fully thought through.”

“My story is a placeholder for their own” Athen is the new album, which emerged from this reflective time in Max Herre’s life and the search for his own story. It deals with the subjectivity of failing and the power of new beginnings. But it is also a pioneering work because it allows vulnerability and it maybe even carries a sense of departure to this mysterious ‘grown-up’ rap.

Athens is a place where Max spent a lot of time during his childhood because his father moved there, and it became a magical destination he would continue to visit frequently with his own kids as well. Many memories, some more recent than others, play into the creation of the new album.

The single Athen brings up long buried feelings and tells the true story of a failed road trip to the Greek capital, it’s a musical poem of lost dreams and old chapters.

“My friend and fellow artist Tua helped me

write the lyrics for the single and together with Maxim we detangled the memory of when I wanted to drive to Athens with a girlfriend and it just wasn’t the right time,” Max says. “Generally, I hope to connect people through telling parts of my personal story. A piece of myself becomes their own, they find themselves in the emotion. In that sense my story is just a placeholder for their own.”

The songs on the new album are a musical powerhouse of emotions. They hit home, capture you immediately and draw you in closer, beat by beat. The versatility of the musical choices but also of context is significant. Max Herre effortlessly manages to bridge the gap between places and generations. He tells us about shared memories and fateful blows – always on the path to new opportunities and constellations. It might be a cliché, but we all know its truth: when one door closes another opens, and Athen brings this old wisdom musically to life in the most beautiful way.

1) Fondue It may seem clichéd, but trying a fondue is a must-do in Switzerland as it has been an integral part of the country’s history for centuries. Some say that fondues were first cooked by Alpine farmers hundreds of years ago, who cooked up wine, garlic and herbs with cheese to use up their leftovers during winter when fresh food was scarce. 2) Raclette Another popular and well-known cheese dish that simply needs to be tried in Switzerland is raclette, a semi-hard cheese that usually comes in the form of a wheel of about 6 kilogrammes. The cheese that originated in the canton of Valais is mostly used for melting but can also be consumed as a slice. The best way to try this deliciously cheesy dish is by heating up the cheese and scraping off the melted par onto some potatoes or other side dishes.

3) Papet Vaudois The term Papet Vaudois translates into mash of leeks with potatoes and sausage.

A staple of Swiss cuisine, Papet Vaudois gets stewed for hours before an oniontinged mixture gets used as a bed for fatty crimson sausages from the canton of Vaud. If you happen to visit the canton, be sure to try this exceptionally tasty dish.

I will guarantee that you won’t regret it.

4) ‘Zurcher Geschnetzeltes’ What does this mean? ‘Zurcher Geschnetzeltes‘ is a Zurich-style ragout with veal and mushrooms. For this national dish, diced veal gets combined with calves’ kidneys and sweetbreads before it gets sautéed in a gravy of onions, butter, white wine, cream and mushrooms. The dish is a hearty, wintertime lunch that can be found on menus across the country – on the piste or off.

5) Basel-style roasted flour soup It was once said that a girl from Basel was not able to get married until she learned how to make roasted flour soup. Today, this tradition is fortunately not the norm anymore, but the dish can still be found throughout the region. Even though there are countless ways to make this traditional dish, the most basic recipe contains flour, butter, onion, beef stock and gratings of Gruyère cheese. If you happen to visit the Basel carnival, the soup is a must-have and important staple at the event.

A visit to Switzerland is not complete without trying the traditional ‘rösti’ dish.

This Swiss dish mainly consists of potatoes, butter and salt and comes in the form of a round fritter. Originally a breakfast dish commonly eaten by farmers, the ‘rösti’ is now a Swiss national dish which is highly popular all over the country. Interestingly, each region has its own version.

The Bernese, for example, are known for their crispy version that gets fried in a lot of butter.

This tongue twister can best be described as an Alpine gratin which consists of potatoes, macaroni, cheese, cream and caramelised onions, as well as stewed apple which gets put on the side. This tasty Swiss pasta dish is made by layering pasta and potatoes with cheese and is simply the perfect comfort food when skiing or when the weather gets colder in general.

8) Polenta Without polenta, nothing really works in the Ticino. So, if you head to this region you’ll be sure to see this dish on most menus. And be sure to try it too! The yellow corn grit is turned into a thick maize mash here. You can choose between mixing it with cheese and trying it as a main dish or choose it as a side dish that is coupled with tasty rabbit, roast beef or local sausages, for example.

9) Capuns Since mankind first learned to cook, people have been wrapping their foods in green leaves of many varieties. So, of course, the Swiss also have their own way of doing it, too. In fact, they love to wrap their delicacies in Swiss chard, and the outcome is a delicious dish called ‘Capuns’. Almost every family in Switzerland’s Engadin region has their own recipe for it. It is a traditional food made from Spätzle dough with pieces of dried meat which are rolled in chard leaves.

Lisa Bitter

The importance of courage and stamina German actress Lisa Bitter is best known for her role as commissioner Johanna Stern in Ludwighafen’s Tatort. She speaks to Discover Germany about the nationwide fascination for the Tatort format, her love for Berlin, her future aspirations and much more.

How did you become an actress? Did you ever have any other dream jobs?

L. Bitter: I grew up in a family of theatre fans; my parents started taking my brother and me to performances at an early age so we didn’t really have a choice. Even though my parents didn’t have artistic jobs themselves, they really cherished this ritual, which was therefore also my first contact with dramatic arts. When I then had to choose a profession, I didn’t think about attending a drama school at first. I chose to study biology and cultural studies at different universities for a while. But then I couldn’t sit still any longer and wanted to change myself – I went to auditions and was successful. I haven’t had any regrets about choosing this profession, to this day!

You were born in Erlangen and lived in Berlin for a while. Why was Berlin your chosen home? What do you love most about this city?

L. Bitter: Even though I currently live in Munich, I lived in Berlin for six years and really enjoyed the time there. Berlin never sleeps and is full of movement – an inspiring and sometimes also exhausting time. I chose the right time for myself to go back to my original home, or rather in close proximity to it. I’m still a frequent visitor to Berlin, but I always enjoy going back to the silence and wonderful landscapes of Bavaria.

In September, you can be seen as commissioner in Ludwighafen’s Tatort.

What can viewers look forward to?

L. Bitter: The next Tatort ‘Maleficius‘ pursues the topic of artificial intelligence and pro-

gressive medical technology. When I first read the script, I thought: ‘This is science fiction, right?!‘ – but no! This is actually an area of development of our own living conditions which will affect us all. Human robots or robot humans – what’s the difference? This topic gets contrasted in our film with a garage team that pursues shady dealings, and this collision of these realities of life is really appealing.

Speaking of Tatort: how do you explain the nationwide fascination with this format? What makes the series so special?

L. Bitter: I myself am still fascinated by this very special format and its success in Germany. I have also spent every Sunday evening on the couch with my family in front of the TV during my adolescence.

Maybe it is a family and inner-German sense of community? And maybe that is an explanation for why the airtime at 20.15 on Sunday evening still seems holy – even in times of Netflix and Amazon Prime.

What do you love most about your role in Tatort?

L. Bitter: I love diving deeper into the police profession and becoming part of investigations and solving tricky murder cases. We regularly meet up with a real case analyst who professionally accompanies our scripts. This insight into the real world of investigation is really fascinating for me.

And with regards to my role of Johanna, I really like her straightforward and sometimes uncompromising ways and her ability to think analytically – as Lisa, I can

definitely still learn something from her in this respect!

Dieses bescheuerte Herz, Alarm für Cobra 11, Kommissar Dupin or Notruf Hafenkante are only a few examples of the films and series that you have already been a part of. Which shoot do you remember most and why?

L. Bitter: I remember the time for Kommissar Dupin very well, when we lived at the Breton coast for weeks on end – a great region. After the time there I was really fed up with all kinds of fish dishes; I wasn’t even able to work up any enthusiasm for oysters anymore. We didn't eat practically anything else there!

What else is planned for this year? Do you have other news for us?

L. Bitter: After two episodes of Tatort, I will go on holiday and will drive to the mountains, drive bikes and go to the lake! The summer can finally arrive for me.

Do you have any recommendations for young aspiring actors?

L. Bitter: I think the two most important properties to have are courage and stamina, when you want to become an actor.

And what’s even more important: to keep the freedom and passion for acting – just as Schiller used to say: the human is only fully human where he plays.

You have achieved quite a lot already in your life. What other wishes and dreams do you still have?

L. Bitter: I wish for an action superhero film and after that, a world trip. After that, everything can stay just like it is at the moment.

Go on holiday: Go green Green living is finally turning into more than just a trend – and rightly so. There is much to do in order to save our planet, so it’s only logical that we all try to do our bit. Many hotels are switching to sustainable concepts and are not only great places to unwind and relax in, but also to get deeply inspired by. Slow food is on the menu, but the concepts usually go far beyond the culinary side.

The eco-friendly hotels in the Germanspeaking region are called ‘Bio-Hotels’ and are a cooperation of mostly ownermanaged hotels in Switzerland, Germany and Austria who follow strict guidelines in order to qualify. Environmentally friendly energy and waste con-

cepts are crucial factors, as well as the use of 100 per cent certified natural cosmetics and regionally sourced produce.

In Bavaria’s Alps, the green hotel moor & mehr is a little gem not to be missed. The traditional family-run hotel, led by its fifth generation, convinces guests with its passion for the healing powers of the moor, based on the Hildegard-philosophy. Mud treatments are a perfect, natural way to detox the body and relax the soul. Worldhack: How Zermatt uses plastic waste to fix potholes Zermatt not only impresses via its incredible views of the Matterhorn mountain and its high recreational value, but also stands out for its pioneering measures to protect the environment. Since 14 June, the municipality in the canton of Valais has been the first place in Switzerland to process recycled plastic to resurface a road junction. Using technology from award-winning Scottish firm MacRebur, the mechanism allows plastic waste that would have gone to incineration or landfill to be used to fill potholes.

Nick, co-founder of MacRebur, remembers: “I have always been an environmentalist since a young age, and I felt like that was an opportunity to make a meaningful difference.” Whereas conventional roads use bitumen to bind the rocks, limestones and sand, the new process allows 44 | Issue 77 | August 2019

us to replace some of the bitumen with plastic. “Polymers are a by-product in industry; they don’t have any home yet.

Why not start using them?” he wonders, while conceding complications at the same time. “It’s difficult to turn a waste product into something you could use

for construction. Quality is absolutely critical for us and the polymers need to be fully homogenised.” That’s one of the reasons why he appreciates the high level of environmental regulation in Scotland, which enables MacRebur to further process the plastic waste right after they have received it.

By now, MacRebur has constructed roads in the US, Australia, Turkey, Bahrain, Slovakia and New Zealand – and since June, also in Switzerland. “Like-minded people around the world want to get involved. That’s brilliant,” Nick enthuses.

“Slovakia, for example, is very keen on trying new products, whereas we have

got quite a conservative attitude. We can’t solve the world’s plastic problems, but we can take a little step.”

A similar story is told by Kirk Tinham.

After working as a technician in plane industries, the young man moved to Zermatt, built up his own company that teaches people all about fly fishing, and shortly afterwards, a sports store for mountaineering equipment. “I try to be involved in projects I’m passionate about,” he says. Passion also drove him to cooperate with MacRebur. “We don’t need to produce plastic when we already have it.

In addition, only few people know that we are already using plastic in many roads.”

Living in Zermatt for six month and surfing in Bali for the other half of the year, Kirk first became aware of plastic pollution among the surfing community on the Indonesian island. “Back in Zermatt, I recognised that this could be a great product for the Swiss market and took the initiative to call the MacRebur office to enquire about distribution.”

Already in the past, the tourist destination in the shadow of the Matterhorn have taken a green approach when it comes to infrastructure. Only accessible by train from the neighbouring village, Zermatt is car-free: the local transportation is provided by electric buses and taxis. And on the ‘Klein Matterhorn’, for example, the energy for heating and lighting is produced by a photo-voltaic system.

For the future, Nick wants to see MacRebur expanding into foreign mar-

kets: “The polymers need to be produced in factories across the globe. Our aim is not to have just one factory in Scotland but maybe 50 around the world.” Kirk agrees: “When we finished the road in Zermatt I felt like ‘hey, we fight’. We are still in the test phase in Switzerland: however, the long-term goal is to have factories over the whole country processing Swiss plastic waste. Toby McCartney, CEO of MacRebur, also found inspiration overseas. During his stay in India, the engineer saw locals pouring waste plastics into potholes and burn it to fix them. After many trials, he found his own industrial method based on a specific asphalt mixture that contains shredded plastic waste.

On the question of why Zermatt is a good place to build a road with the help of recycled plastic, Toby answers: “Temperatures in Zermatt range from below minus 15 in the winter to up to around 30 degrees in summer. However, as our roads contain plastic, they are more flexible. This means they can cope better with the contraction and expansion caused by changes in the weather, reducing cracks and potholes.”

Kirk adds: “Although Switzerland has a fantastic recycling collection system in place, more than 80 per cent of the collected waste plastics are incinerated rather than repurposed. With the Swiss being proud of their fresh air, this practice is particularly unpopular, but now, we have the potential to make use of the efficient collection system and reuse the plastic waste,” Kirk adds.

Discovering the origins of German democracy The Hambach Castle at the German wine route not only amazes visitors with its architecture and location high above Neustadt an der Weinstraße, but more importantly, with its history: the Hambach Castle, with the Hambach Festival of 1832, is considered one of the birthplaces of German democracy. Today, the castle and museum present a history that can be touched and experienced.

It is the end of May 1832, when 25,000 people gather at the Hambach Castle for a protest. Disguised as a celebration, the protest was the beginning of the democratic movement in Germany and made the Hambach Castle famous all over Germany: Next to the St. Paul’s Church in Frankfurt, the Hambach Castle is the main symbol of the German democratic movement – and has today become a favourite spot to visit for tourists from all over the world. “The spirit of Hambach, born 180 years ago when thousands of people courageously set out towards the castle ruins – the dream of freedom before their eyes – can still be felt today,” says Ulrike Dittrich, the castle’s managing director.

High above the city at the slopes of the Palatinate forest, visitors have a spectacular view over the Rhine valley and the surrounding vineyards. While the castle had been a ruin during the times of the ‘Hambacher Fest’, today it has developed into one of the most important historic sites and has been extended accordingly – with a modern restaurant, among other things. For the very cautious interfering with the historic structure, architect Max Dudler won the prize of the German Architecture Museum in 2012. The architecture preserves tradition while transferring the building into modernity, allowing an impressive experience of history.

The Hambach Castle makes it possible to touch and delve into history, not only as a monument, but also through its main exhibition. Different media and activity stations turn history into a real experience: “The exhibition invites you to dive right into the exciting days of 1832 and experience history with all five senses.”

Above that, the castle offers tours and workshops: for example, about the historic architecture, caricatures or the song as a political medium. To experience history where it happened is important, says castle manager Ulrike Dittrich: “Historic sites like the Hambach Castle enrich the learning experience and allow a multisensory access to historical and political education. And this is even more important in times when populism again becomes stronger.”

Die Ursprünge der deutschen Demokratie entdecken Das Hambacher Schloss an der Pfälzer Weinstraße beeindruckt nicht nur durch seine Architektur und seine Lage hoch über Neustadt an der Weinstraße, sondern vor allem durch seine Geschichte: Das Hambacher Schloss gilt mit dem Hambacher Fest 1832 als eine der Geburtsstätten der deutschen Demokratie. Es ist Ende Mai 1832 als auf dem Hambacher Schloss 25.000 Menschen zu einer Protestversammlung zusammenkommen. Der als Volksfest getarnte Protest war nicht nur der erste große Auftakt zur Demokratiebewegung auf deutschem Boden, sondern hat das Hambacher Schloss darüber hinaus deutschlandweit berühmt gemacht: Neben der Frankfurter Paulskirche gilt das Hambacher Schloss als wichtigstes Symbol der deutschen Demokratiebewegung – und ist heute ein beliebtes Reiseziel für Touristen aus aller Welt. „Der Geist von Hambach, geboren vor über 180 Jahren als tausende von Menschen mutig und voller Hoffnung zur Schlossruine aufbrachen – den Traum von Freiheit vor Augen – ist immer noch spürbar“, sagt Ulrike Dittrich, geschäftsführende Schlossmanagerin.

Das Hambacher Schloss bietet Geschichte zum Anfassen, nicht nur als steinernes Zeugnis, sondern auch durch die Ausstellung Hinauf, hinauf zum Schloss!. Mit verschiedenen Medien- und Aktivstationen macht die Ausstellung Geschichte erlebbar: „Sie lädt ein, in die spannenden Tages des Jahres 1832

einzutauchen und diese mit allen Sinnen zu erfahren.“ Darüber hinaus gibt es Führungen und Workshops – zur Architekturgeschichte, Karikaturen oder dem Lied als politisches Medium. Geschichte an dem Ort zu erleben, wo sie passierte, ist wichtig, sagt die Schlossmanagerin Ulrike Dittrich: „Historische Orte wie das Hambacher Schloss bereichern das Lernen und ermöglichen einen multisensorischen Zugang zur geschichtlichen und politischen Bildung. Why not swap the bustling city centre of Zurich for something a little bit smaller and therefore quieter this summer? Head to Stein am Rhein, for example. This little town is situated close to the German border and is unique due to its many beautiful house facades that sport gorgeous and historic paintings.

Of course, hiking should be an integral part of a summer trip to Switzerland, too. With around 65,000 kilometres of signposted trails to potentially follow, you’re definitely spoilt for choice. But we suggest heading to the Lavaux Vineyards. It is one of Switzerland’s premier wine-growing regions and is also perfect for a fun summer hike on which you can marvel at panoramic views of Lake Geneva and the Alps before stopping off and resting at the many wine cellars and open houses – with a glass of wine to enjoy, too, of course.

Swimming enthusiasts will also get their fair share of great things to do during summer in Switzerland. After all, the country boasts stunning rivers and lakes

which can also be used for swimming, and many of them have exceptionally clear waters on offer. Examples are the Emme river in Berne, the Silsersee lake in Grisons or Lake Leisee in Zermatt. At 2,232 metres above sea level, the latter is a mountain lake that is fed by the surrounding glaciers, making its water especially clear.

over untouched nature, and enjoy one or two glasses of wine while indulging in the most spectacular Swiss cuisine!

Habsburg Castle, the ancestral castle of a world empire.

Hidden treasures of the ‘moated heart of Switzerland’ In the canton of Aargau, where the rivers Aare, Reuss and Limmat meet, visitors can find Switzerland’s moated heart region. For years, this unique riverscape has invited visitors from near and far. Discover Germany visited the region to find out what makes the region of Brugg-Windisch so special.

The 172-hectare-large moated heart region – with stretches of running water, ponds and swamps, gravel areas and wetland forests – poses as an important habitat for plants and animals and is an attractive recreation and adventure region for people. It’s no coincidence that the Romans chose the ‘Windischer Plateau’ area, where Reuss and Limmat meet the Aare river, as their preferred location. The Habsburg family also settled here. And today, visitors can marvel at the impressive building structures of both of these empires, in this region.

On the trails of the Romans Many visitors are surprised when they first find out that Windisch has Switzerland’s only Roman legion camp. They can experience the fascinating history of the antique legion camp in Vindonissa, which prepared 6,000 legionaries for their service around 2,000 years ago, on the legionary trail which is open annually from April to the end of October. Today, one can see, hear and experience the former life of the legionaries here.

Because Romans also brought viticulture to Vindonissa around 2,000 years ago, people still produce wine according to Roman traditions on four museum vineyards in the Brugg region. Free guided tours and tastings teach visitors more about this former drinking culture.

Monasteries and castles The region also has a lot to offer fans of monasteries and castles from the Middle Ages. In Königsfelden, for example, one can find the over 700-year-old Königsfelden double monastery amidst the Roman ruins of Vindonissa. As a Habsburg memorial building, it constitutes an important part of the family history of one of Europe’s most powerful aristocratic houses. With the foundation of Königsfelden, the Habsburg family not only created a monastery that remembered the murder of King Albrecht, but also created a memorial place which manifested the importance of this emerging dynasty in the 14th century. Furthermore, the church of Königsfelden’s windows were created between 1320 and 1360 and belong

to the most excellent works of European glass paintings of the late Middle Ages.

Not far from Brugg-Windisch lies the Habsburg Castle. This ancestral castle, which was founded around 1030, is the eponymous ancestral seat of the Habsburg family which ruled a world empire after its rise in the late Middle Ages. Today, the Habsburg Castle houses a restaurant and a small exhibition on the building and settlement history. And all of this includes fascinating views of Aargau’s landscape – for free, of course.

Versteckte Schätze am Wasserschloss der Schweiz Im Kanton Aargau, wo die Flüsse Aare, Reuss und Limmat zusammenfliessen, liegt das Wasserschloss der Schweiz. Diese einzigartige Flusslandschaft lockt Besucher von nah und fern schon seit Jahren an. Discover Germany hat die Gegend besucht, um rauszufinden, was die Region Brugg-Windisch so besonders macht.

Das 172 Hektar grosse Wasserschloss-Gebiet – mit fliessenden Gewässern, Teichen und Sümpfen, Kiesflächen und Auenwald – bildet einen wichtigen Lebensstandort für Pflanzen und Tiere und ist ein attraktives Erholungsund Erlebnisgebiet für den Menschen. Es ist kein Zufall, dass die Römer das Windischer Plateau, wo Reuss und Limmat sich mit der Aare vereinen, als Standort auswählten.

Auch die Habsburger haben sich hier niedergelassen. Heute können Besucher in der Region imposante bauliche Spuren dieser beiden Weltreiche bestaunen.

Auf den Spuren der Römer Viele Besucher sind erstmal überrascht, dass es in Windisch das einzige römische Legionslager der Schweiz zu bestaunen gibt. Auf dem Legionärspfad, der jeweils von Anfang April bis Ende Oktober geöffnet ist, erleben sie am

authentischen Schauplatz die faszinierende Geschichte des antiken Legionslagers in Vindonissa, das hier vor 2.000 Jahren einst 6.000 Legionäre auf ihre Einsätze vorbereitete. Heute sieht, hört und fühlt man sich spielerisch ins damalige Leben der Legionäre und hohen Offiziere versetzt.

Die Römer brachten vor rund 2.000 Jahre auch den Rebbau nach Vindonissa. Daher wird heute auch in vier Museumsrebbergen in der Region Brugg Rebbau nach römischer Überlieferung betrieben. Freie Besichtigungen, Führungen und Degustationen bringen Besuchern eine vergangene Trinkkultur genussreich näher.

Kloster und Schlösser Für Fans von Klöstern und Schlössern aus dem Mittelalter hat die Region auch einiges

zu bieten. In Königsfelden liegt zum Beispiel das über 700-jährige Doppelkloster Königsfelden inmitten der römischen Ruinen von Vindonissa. Es stellt als habsburgischer Memorialbau ein bedeutendes Stück Familiengeschichte eines der mächtigsten Adelshäuser Europas dar. Die Habsburger haben sich mit der Stiftung von Königsfelden nicht nur ein Kloster in Erinnerung an den Mord an König Albrecht geschaffen, sondern einen Memorialort, der die Bedeutung der aufstrebenden Dynastie im 14. Jahrhundert manifestiert. Die zwischen 1320 und 1360 entstandenen Fenster in der Kirche Königsfelden gehören zu den herausragendsten Werken der europäischen Glasmalerei im Spätmittelalter.

Unweit von Brugg-Windisch liegt das Schloss Habsburg. Die um 1030 gegründete Stammburg ist der namengebende Stammsitz der Habsburger, die nach ihrem glänzenden Aufstieg im Spätmittelalter ein Weltreich beherrschten. Heute beherbergt das Schloss Habsburg eine kleine Ausstellung zur Bau- und Siedlungsgeschichte sowie ein Restaurant. Faszinierende Ausblicke in die Aargauer Landschaft gibt es kostenlos dazu.

Sei es als Wanderer, Naturgenießer, Sportler oder Geschichtsliebhaber: das Wasserschloss und die umliegende Region hat für jeden etwas zu bieten.

Das Schloss Habsburg ist in wenigen Autominuten und mit öffentlichem Verkehr in weniger als 15 Minuten ab Bahnhof Brugg zu erreichen.

Unberührte Natur und Erholung in der Schweizer Bergwelt „Hinter dem Mond, links“ ist der leicht selbstironische Slogan des Schweizer Bergdorfs St. Antönien im Kanton Graubünden. Abseits der großen Touristenströme liegt der kleine Ort inmitten einer atemberaubenden Bergkulisse: Das umgebende Rätikon-Gebirge gilt als ‚Bündner Dolomiten‘ und bietet zahlreiche Möglichkeiten zum Wandern, Mountainbiken und Klettern.

Wer die Berge ganz nah an der Natur entdecken möchte, ist in St. Antönien genau richtig: In dem abgelegenen Ort und auf den umgebenden Bergtrails finden Urlauber Ruhe, Entspannung und Abenteuer. „St. Antönien ist ein Ort für Familien und Outdoor-Sportler, wo nachhaltiger und naturnaher Urlaub möglich ist“, sagt Cyrill Locher vom Prättigau Tourismus. Anders als in den großen Destinationen ist die beeindruckende Berglandschaft hier nicht mit Bergbahnen, Passstraßen oder großen Hotelkomplexen verbaut. „Das Tal präsentiert sich noch heute beinahe so wie vor 50 Jahren.“ St. Antönien ist ein Walserdorf und das spiegelt sich im Baustil und in der Kultur, ebenso wie beim Essen. Dazu der Wirt Ernst Flütsch: „Die währschafte Bündner Küche findet sich in allen Restaurants im Ort. Als Spezialität gilt eine alte Speise aus der Bratpfanne mit Brot, Rahm und Alpkäse, verfeinert mit einem Schuss Cognac“.

Neben den Hotels im Ort finden sich mehrere Unterkünfte an den höher gelegenen Berghängen. Gäste können hier auf 1.800 m übernachten und in den Morgenstunden direkt zur Bergwanderung aufbrechen. St. Antönien liegt an der Grenze zum österreichischen Vorarlberg. Einst war die Gegend beliebt bei Schmugglern, welche die Bergwege nutzten, um Waren über die Grenze zu schaffen. Heute können Wanderer entlang der alten Schmuggelrouten die Grenze zwischen Österreich und der Schweiz erwandern. „St. Antönien liegt zudem an der bekannten Mehrtageswanderung Prättigauer Höhenweg“, sagt Cyrill Locher. Er empfiehlt darüber hinaus „eine Seenwanderung zum Carschinasee und Partnunsee, mit atemberaubenden Ausblicken auf die Kalkwände des Rätikon“.

Wer etwas mutig und schwindelfrei ist, kann den Hausberg Sulzfluh (2817 m ü.

M.) über einen der drei Klettersteige erklimmen. Gesichert durch Stahlseile, füh-

ren Metallstufen die senkrechte Bergwand hinauf. Anders als beim alpinen Klettern bedarf es keiner bergsteigerischen Vorerfahrung. Eine durchschnittliche Fitness und etwas Abenteuerlust reichen vollkommen aus. Der kürzeste Klettersteig eignet sich sogar für Familien mit Kindern. Auch Wanderer werden auf dem Kalkgipfel der Sulzfluh mit einer beeindruckenden Sicht belohnt.

In der Gegend finden sich zudem gute Mountainbike-Routen, im Ort gibt es einen E-Bike-Verleih. Familien mit Kindern können mit dem Tretroller über Bergstraßen zurück in den Ort fahren. Im Winter ist das St. Antöniertal ein Paradies für Skitouren, Winterwanderungen und Schneeschuhtouren. www.praettigau.info St. Antönien liegt in einem Seitental des Prättigaus im Kanton Graubünden im Südosten der Schweiz. Anfahrt mit dem Auto via Bodensee oder Zürich bis Landquart, danach auf der Schnellstrasse Richtung Davos bis Küblis, von da sind es noch 12 km bis St. Antönien. Mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln ist der Ort wie folgt erreichbar: SBB bis Landquart, Rhätische Bahn bis Küblis, Postbus nach St. Antönien.

Anyone who likes a bit more action can take a scooter and race down the curvy slope from the Brandalp – easy to reach via chairlift – back to the village.

Guests will also enjoy Unterbäch’s culinary range: with five restaurants, everyone will always find something for their taste and wallet. Regular culinary events like the gastro safari or a tour of the Alpine cheese factory are among the absolute highlights on offer.

The collection Oskar Reinhart “Am Römerholz” offers an incredibly comprehensive programme for children. From the kids’ audio guide to the educational Sunday tour, family picnics in the museum park and children’s birthday parties – art comes to life for the little ones over here.

Die Sammlung Oskar Reinhart „Am Römerholz“ bietet ein unglaublich umfassendes Programm für Kinder. Vom KinderAudioguide bis zu pädagogisch betreuten Kunstspaziergängen, Familienpicknicks im Museumspark und Kindergeburtstagen – hier wird Kunst kindgerecht lebendig.

The former villa of legendary art collector Oskar Reinhart is, with over 200 European paintings, drawings and sculptures, a true haven for art lovers. In order to bring this fascinating world closer to children, the museum offers a vibrant programme, so that kids too can fully enjoy this beautiful place.

Damit allerdings auch Kinder diese faszinierende Welt näher kennenlernen können, bietet das Museum ein buntes Programm, so dass auch Kinderaugen in der wunderschönen Villa Grund zum Leuchten haben.

The audio guide, specifically designed for kids aged six to 14 years, enables young explorers to discover the museum on their own. Oskar Reinhart’s fictional niece, Anna, takes children around the house and explains the paintings and sculptures in a playful way, from her perspective.

During the free art stroll on certain Sundays (dates on the website), with an art teacher, kids can get creative in the in-house atelier after the tour. And the ‘children’s suitcase’ is yet another offering that is great for the entire family: young art experts travel across “Römerholz” with the museum suitcase, containing a colouring book, detective riddles, puzzles and art utensils.

Der Audioguide speziell für Kinder von sechs bis 14 Jahren ermöglicht es den kleinen Entdeckern das Museum auf eigene Faust zu erkunden. Oskar Reinharts Nichte „Anna“ nimmt die Kinder mit auf einen Rundgang durch das Haus und erklärt ihnen spielerisch die Gemälde und Skulpturen aus ihrer Sicht.

Während des kostenlosen sonntäglichen Kunstspaziergangs mit einer Kunstpädagogin dürfen die Kids nach der Führung im hauseigenen Malatelier selbst kreativ werden (Daten auf der Webseite). Der Kinderkoffer hingegen ist ein Angebot für die ganze Familie: Junge Kunstexperten reisen mit dem Museumskoffer, der neben Malbuch, Detektivrätsel und Puzzle auch Künstlerutensilien beinhaltet, durch das „Römerholz“.

Das Benediktinerkloster ist weithin bekannt für seine prägnante Barockkirche oder die dem frühen Rokoko verpflichtete Stiftsbibliothek. In den der Öffentlichkeit nicht zugänglichen Bereichen finden sich allerdings auch viele unbekannte Schätze.

Dazu gehört die umfangreiche Musikbibliothek mit dem größten Bestand an Musikhandschriften der Schweiz.

Einsiedeln zeigt nun einige der wertvollen klostereigenen Musikalien, die vom florierenden musikalischen Leben des Klosters und der Sammelleidenschaft der Mönche zeugen.

In einer ‚Ouvertüre und sechs Akten‘ präsentiert, wurde der Raum des Museums Fram dazu in sieben Bereiche aufgeteilt.

Dabei gibt es die Musik nicht nur zu sehen, sondern auch zu hören: zum Einen mit den in der Ausstellung zur Verfügung gestellten Audioguides, zum Anderen in

einem speziell eingerichteten Auditorium.

Ein Traum für jeden Kulturinteressierten mit einem Faible für Kirchenmusik.

Klostereigene Komponisten Seit dem 10. Jahrhundert lebt in Einsiedeln eine Mönchsgemeinschaft, die ihren Tagesablauf nach der Regel des heiligen Benedikt von Nursia gestaltet. Da in der benediktinischen Tradition ein Teil des täglichen Gebets gesungen wird, erstaunt es nicht, dass sich in einer über tausendjährigen Klostertradition ein riesiger Bestand an gesungener Gottesdienstmusik angesammelt hat. Viele dieser Werke wurden von klostereigenen Komponisten geschaffen, denen der erste Akt der Ausstellung gewidmet ist. Darunter finden

sich Ulrich Wittwiler, Anselm Schubiger, Oswald Jaeggi, der Hindemith-Schüler Daniel Meier und der Bartolucci-Schüler Theo Flury (*1955).

Zwischen Kirche und Bühne Dass Oper und Gottesdienst sich nicht unbedingt ausschließen, mag heute überraschen. Zu Renaissance- und Barockzeiten war dies jedoch keineswegs ein Widerspruch.

So wird im zweiten Akt der Ausstellung unter anderem offenbar, wie bis weit ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein in der Kirche auch Musik aus Opern gespielt wurde. So erklang beispielsweise ein Magnificat mit Musik aus Mozarts Le Nozze di Figaro – und aus der Arie Contessa perdono wurde ein Gloria patri.

Im Lauf der Geschichte bis in die Moderne haben sowohl interne, als auch mit dem Kloster verbundene Komponisten Werke für den Gottesdienst geschaffen. Speziell zu erwähnen sind die beiden großen Einsiedler Messen von Hans Huber (1852-1921) und Albert Jenny (1912-1992).

Noch vor dem legendären Zyklus im Opernhaus Zürich führten Einsiedler Stiftsschüler im Jahr 1965 Claudio Monteverdis L'Orfeo (1607) auf. Ein Jahr später versiegte die Operntradition an der Stiftsschule, die bis in die zweite Hälfte

des 18. Jahrhunderts zurückzuverfolgen ist. Da es bis 1970 keine Mädchen am Gymnasium gab, wurden die Opern von den Mönchen ohne Rücksicht bearbeitet, so dass aus Frauenpartien Männerrollen wurden und etwa Donizettis Fille du régiment kurzerhand zu Marino, der Regimentsbursche mutierte. Die Ausstellung verspricht also durchaus auch ein paar Kuriositäten.

Schätze aus Oberitalien Im vierten Akt wird gezeigt, welche Auswirkungen die Schule hatte, welche das Kloster von 1675 bis 1852 in Bellinzona führte. Über diese ‚Filiale‘ kamen große Bestände oberitalienischer Musik ins Heimatkloster. Die zahlreichen Entdeckungen der Tessiner Einsiedler-Patres in Mailand und an anderen Orten Oberitaliens befinden sich heute in der Musikbibliothek, darunter auch sechs Original-Partituren des Mailänder Domkapellmeisters Carlo Donato Cossoni (1623-1700).

Rund 100 zeitgenössische Abschriften katholischer Kirchenmusik des jüngsten Bach-Sohnes Johann Christian Bach (17351782), der sich in jungen Jahren in Mailand aufhielt, runden diesen AusstellungsAbschnitt ab.

Nach der Revolution

Der Mailänder Domkapellmeister Carlo Donato Cossoni vermachte dem Kloster Eisiedeln seinen musikalischen Nachlass.

Der fünfte Akt zeigt die Auswirkungen der Französischen Revolution auf das Musikleben im Kloster Einsiedeln. 1798 musste der aus 93 Mönchen bestehende Konvent vor den französischen Truppen fliehen; die Patres ließen sich zum größten Teil im vorarlbergischen St. Gerold nieder und steuerten von dort aus verschiedene Klöster

in Österreich und Deutschland an. Eine wahre Offenbarung war für sie die Musik von Joseph Haydn. Seine Streichquartette, Sinfonien, Messen und Oratorien trugen dazu bei, dass sich die Einsiedler Musikverantwortlichen von der ‚welschen‘ der deutschen Musik zuwandten.

Im Mittelpunkt des sechsten und letzten Akts steht Bibliotheksgründer Pater Gall Morel, aus damaliger und wohl auch aus heutiger Sicht „der universalste Geist, den das Stift besessen“, wie es im Professbuch des Klosters heißt. Zusammen mit den Novizen erstellte er 1835 das erste Verzeichnis der vorhandenen Musikalien und legte damit den Grundstein für die Einsiedler Musikbibliothek.

Die beiden Kuratoren der Ausstellung sind Pater Lukas Helg, seit 43 Jahren Leiter der Musikbibliothek, und Dr. Christoph Riedo, Musikwissenschaftler und Kenner der Alten Musik. ‚Fram‘ ist übrigens norwegisch und heißt auf Deutsch ‚vorwärts‘.

Der Name des Museums stammt vom Schiff des Forschers und Nobelpreisträgers Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930). Walter Kälin, Präsident der Stiftung Kulturerbe Einsiedeln erläutert die Mission des Museums mit den Worten: „Anhand von Objekten aus der Vergangenheit reflektieren wir die Gegenwart und machen uns Gedanken über die Zukunft.“ www.fram-einsiedeln.ch Ein himmlisch' Werk – 25. A highlight is the summit of the Morgenberghorn (2,249 metres above sea level). Culturally, the town offers several events this autumn, including the Alphorn Meeting, with a sermon on Mount Aeschiallmend (18 August); the legendary Chemihütteschwinget (22 September); and in September, the annual mountainmeadow homecoming from the Alm and the Älplermarkt.

Accessible by public transport, Aeschi is located just 40 minutes from Bern, and many other Swiss sights and ski areas can be reached within a short time.

Located north-east from the famous Zurich, the charming Swiss town of Winterthur is an insider’s tip for those who like culture just as much as relaxing in nature. Gabriel Stucki, head of marketing and business development at Park Hotel Winterthur, gives a few tips on how best to combine culture and nature here.

Happy birthday, Liechtenstein!

Only slightly larger than Manhattan, the Principality of Liechtenstein, landlocked between Switzerland and Austria, lies snuggled between mountain ranges which rise steeply above the River Rhine. In 2019, the world’s sixth-smallest country celebrates its 300th anniversary with plenty of fanfare.

No one would claim that Liechtenstein is a tourism hotspot. In fact, the country, which measures only 12.4 kilometres wide by 24.6 kilometres long, is so tiny, one has to know exactly where to look for it on a map. But Liechtenstein’s wealth of culture, charming mountain scenery and hiking paths that are picture-perfect, have been overlooked for much too long.

Fireworks on national day The peak of the celebrations will be on national day, 15 August, when the royal family invites citizens and visitors from abroad to the Rose Garden at Vaduz Castle (the grounds are otherwise closed to the public). From 9.30am onwards, crowds will gather for an aperitif, then

head to the streets of the capital where beer and wine will flow freely. At 9.15pm, the traditional torch-light procession will move up the Princes' Way hiking trail before the grand finale of a fireworks display. The celebrations and musical live acts continue well into the small hours of Liechtenstein’s biggest annual party.

Priceless art Hans-Adam II, prince of Liechtenstein, is one of the world’s wealthiest monarchs, and he owns a priceless art collection that includes more than two-thirds of all of Peter Paul Rubens’ paintings. From September 2019 to January 2020, for the first time since 1938, some of the royal family’s artworks will return from their per-

manent home in Vienna to Liechtenstein for an exhibition at the Kunstmuseum (Museum of Fine Arts) in Vaduz. The small country is also home to one of the world’s finest Easter egg collections, which can be seen in the Treasure Chamber.

Highlights include many precious Russian Easter eggs, including the worldfamous Apple Blossom Egg by Fabergé, as well as other Fabergé Easter eggs and goldsmith masterpieces. Also on display are lunar rocks collected by the astronauts on board Apollo 11 and Apollo 17, and the first-ever postage stamp issued by the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Trails and tracks The country’s mountains have long been a well-kept secret among keen walkers, with soaring summits, cosy mountain huts and breathtaking views stretching all the way to Lake Constance. From easy walks in the Rhine Valley to more challenging excursions and snow-covered peaks, exploring Liechtenstein using the 400-kilometrenetwork of hiking trails is one of the most popular activities among locals and visitors during the summer months. To celebrate the country’s birthday, the Liechtenstein Trail, which goes through all 11 municipalities, was launched this May. Explorers can discover 75 kilometres full of stories,

sights, majestic views and idyllic spots to have a rest.

Fun in snow and kitchen From the middle of December, Liechtenstein’s only ski resort, Malbun, opens for downhill skiers, ski mountaineers and cross-country skiers, with guaranteed snow and a family atmosphere. The principality’s highest village (1,602 metres high) boasts excellent pistes, and winter sports activities are plentiful: ice climbing, tobogganing, winter hiking trails, snow shoe tours and mountain party huts.

Something a bit more unusual is offered in the small, family-run Hotel Turna, where Käsknöpfle making classes can be booked. The traditional national dish of pint-sized Liechtenstein is the rather small, doughy, pasta-style cheese dumplings, or ‘buttons’ (käs = cheese, knöpfle = buttons). Freshly made, they are typically served accompanied by spicy grated cheese, crisp fried onions and apple sauce. Every family has their own recipe, but it’s a dish that is enjoyed all year round especially on a sunny terrace in summer or in front of an open fire in winter.

Despite the minimalist finesse, their projects never end up with a cold outlook. By effectively fusing light and material, the resulting spaces rather present an atmosphere that is both clear-cut and warm at the same time.

Learning the ropes with the big names Ulrike Imhof went abroad right after finishing her studies to earn experience within the exciting, visionary realm of the many international star architects. New York impressed and influenced the young architect especially: “The city became my chosen home. The energy, the passion and the knack for constant reinvention in a place where everyone is talented and 72 | Issue 77 | August 2019

trying to live their dream inspires me still today.” The first solo assignment back home in 2014, a fashion and furniture pop-up store in Frankfurt, immediately drew much attention and acclaim both through word of mouth and social media: a dream start for the aspiring architect.

Unterschätzte Gefahr: Visual und Audible Hacking

Ob Laptop oder Smartphone – oft gehen wir auf Geschäftsreisen sehr offen mit sensiblen Business-Informationen um, ohne uns Gedanken darum zu machen, wer mithört oder -liest. Das internationale Cybersicherheitsunternehmen Kaspersky zeigt, wie man sich effektiv schützt.

Was nützen Firewall und IT-Sicherheitsschulungen, wenn man unterwegs Firmendaten unbewusst Dritten zugänglich macht? Kaspersky, welches über 400 Millionen Nutzer mit innovativen Cybersicherheitslösungen versorgt, führte daher ein fünftägiges Experiment durch, um zu prüfen wie gefährlich Visual und Audible Hacking ist.

Die potentielle Ausbeute ist erschreckend: Der beauftragte Tester konnte – anonym per Strichlistenzählung – im Zug insgesamt 281 physische Dokumente und 1.193 Screens mit Business-Bezug einsehen, sowie 106 Geschäftstelefonate mithören. „Das Kaspersky-Experiment hat meine

Vermutung, dass Geschäftsreisende oft zu sorglos mit Unternehmensinformationen umgehen, definitiv bestätigt“, so der Testbeauftragte Stephan Schilling. Corporate Communications Manager für die DACHRegion bei Kaspersky Anne Mickler fügt hinzu: „IT-Sicherheit beginnt im Kopf. Was viele immer noch unterschätzen: Es reicht, wenn ein Dritter mit böswilliger Absicht einen Blick auf den Bildschirm des eigenen Smartphones oder Laptops wirft.“ Kaspersky empfiehlt eine Reihe von Sicherheitsmaßnahmen, wie zum Beispiel Blickschutzfilter. Grundsätzlich sollte man unterwegs ausschließlich nicht vertrauliche Dinge bearbeiten. Bei Telefonaten muss man sich bewusst sein, dass Dritte im

Zugabteil unweigerlich mithören, und die Nennung von Klarnamen vermeiden. Laptops und Co. sollte man nie unbeaufsichtigt lassen – bei einem Gang zur Toilette, sollten Geräte gesperrt und Token, ID-Karten o.ä. mitgenommen werden. Auch sollten alle Geschäftsgeräte mit einer entsprechenden IT-Sicherheitslösung geschützt werden.

Modus X: Munich’s 3D-manufactory It’s the daily challenge for Modus X to visually explain highly complex technical products and processes and to make them emotionally accessible. Time and again, however, the specialist for CGI and 3D masters this art brilliantly – and with a great deal of creativity.

When Modus X-founder Reinhard Wespel studied architecture in the ‘90s, computer aided design and construction, short CAD, experienced its first boom.

For Wespel, who always had a passion for film, it made sense to specialise in the new medium as it presented the perfect connection between technical understanding and moving image. In 2000, he founded Modus X, a company for technical communication.

Today, his creative workforce of seven successfully creates 3D-visualisations for big clients such as BMW, MAN, Lidl and MINI. Modus X is the right partner when it comes to visualising complex technology in an emotional way that is easy to 84 | Issue 77 | August 2019

grasp. Through an exciting film, comprehensive technology can be experienced and understood by a regular audience.

The team has to fully comprehend complex technical concepts down to the smallest detail in a short amount of time.

Only then are they able to present it accurately and visualise it creatively. Often, they have just the construction data to work from, and Wespel emphasises that there are many creatives who are computer-savvy, but not very many who also have a technical understanding.

“We see ourselves more as a manufactory and not just as an agency. The difference is that we don’t follow hierarchies here.

Everyone is involved in every project. For example, we don’t hire a scriptwriter and haven’t employed someone who’s just focusing on that,” Wespel explains. “Of course, we have employees specialised in certain subjects, but generally, everyone here actively thinks and contributes to each project. That means that our clients always get the full overview when they call. This results in a very close relationship to the production and ultimately to the product – for us as well as for the client.

Naturally, every project has a limited budget, but Modus X always finds an individual solution. “In the end, we want everyone to love our film. If the budget doesn’t allow a costly production, we find a solution which feels right for the client. Do you remember Mandy Gray? She last made the news headlines back in 2017 after divorcing her husband and emerging from the financial remedy proceedings with half of her by then ex-husband’s 225 million dollar fortune. She had already hauled up at that point with a chap called Hamish Hurley, her erstwhile personal coach and therapist. The two then embarked on a lavish lifestyle, funded by Ms Gray, which included travelling the world, and acquiring a fleet of supercars, a property in Italy, and a farm in New Zealand, amongst other investments and expenditure amounting in a few short years to tens of millions of pounds. Many of these assets were registered in Mr Hurley’s name or in the couple’s joint names.

Ms Gray is now back in the news after being back in court to sue her former lover for the return of these assets, having terminated the relationship and accused him of undue influence, and of being emotionally abusive and the archetypal gold-digger par excellence. A sign of the times, Ms Gray served the claim form in the proceedings on Mr Hurley by WhatsApp message, which the English court considered to constitute valid service. The need for process to be served in this way arose because Mr Hurley had in the meantime retreated to his native New Zealand, where he had himself commenced legal proceedings, arguing that the various transactions constituted gifts from Ms Gray to him and that they were his to keep. The couple had not married and the attraction of proceedings in New Zealand (from Mr Hurley’s perspective) becomes apparent when you note that the law of New Zealand contains rules allowing as86 | Issue 77 | August 2019

sets to be awarded to parties who have been in an unmarried relationship. English law contains no such rule (contrary to the surprisingly common but still misplaced belief that there is such a thing as a ’common law marriage’ which grants unmarried couples property and financial rights on separation) so, equally unsurprisingly, Ms Gray was much preferring to have her case heard in the English courts.

The jurisdictional battle as to which court has jurisdiction to determine these questions for now went in Ms Gray’s favour, including as to the question of whether Mr Hurley holds the Italian villa on trust for Ms Gray. It looks like much expensive litigation is yet to follow until the court has poured over emails, social media messages (apparently some 40,000 had been exchanged between the couple in happier days) and the recollection of private conversations to determine what Ms Gray intended when this asset or that was registered in Mr Hurley’s or in their joint names.

There are probably a few lessons to be learned, albeit expensive ones, beyond the old saying of ’don’t spend it all at once’: if you do receive expensive gifts, please make sure that there is a record of them being intended to be just that; by contrast, if you register expensive assets in another person’s name, and you do not intend them to be gifts, but to be held on trust, please ensure that there is a legal instrument recording that understanding between both parties.

While this case may at first glance appear to be at best tangentially relevant to ‘normal’

people, similar issues can arise very quickly in everyday life: for example, when a partner in an unmarried relationship acquires from his or her assets a family home which is registered in the couple’s joint names, or when the parents of one party in an unmarried relationship make a substantial financial contribution to the acquisition of a home in the young couple’s joint names.

Please remember this column and ask a lawyer to produce a valid and binding legal document which sets out the parameters of the funding arrangement and ownership position when you get there, just in case things don’t go as planned.

On some rather interesting terms

The delights of the German, French and Italian vocabulary In this column, author Adam Jacot de Boinod explores the weird and wonderful world of German, French and Italian vocabulary, and discovers some rather interesting terms. Let us take a look at what he has found.

Toponymy is the study of place names.

Typically, the definitions are simply a matter of natural or geographic origin or human settlements, climate, colour or basic trading conditions. Some, however, have come on quite a journey; while others have been handed down by folklore, myth or legend. The best are the most original, the quirkiest or those with a story attached. I hope you enjoy them and that they raise an eyebrow or two!

In Germany, Berlin may be related to the Old Polabian stem ‘berl-/birl’, meaning swamp. Dresden is derived from Old Sorbian ‘Drežd’any’, meaning ‘people of the forest’. Leipzig is derived from the Slavic word ‘Lipsk’, meaning ‘settlement where the linden trees stand’ (British: lime trees; US English: basswood trees).

In France, the word Marseille comes from the Greek word ‘Massalia’, via a Phocaean word meaning ‘the city of sacrifices’. This name has evolved over time through Massilia, then Marselha and finally Marseille.

Nantes is named after an ancient Gaulish people, the Namnetes, whose origin is thought to come from the Gaulish root ‘nant’, meaning river or stream, from the pre-Celtic root ‘nanto’, meaning ‘valley’, or from Amnites, another tribal name possibly meaning ‘men of the river’.

In Italy, the uncertain etymology of Milan may come from the Latin ‘medio’ (in the middle) and ‘planus’ (plain). However, ‘lanum’ may come from the Celtic root ‘lan’, meaning an enclosure or demarcated territory.

The root of the word Pompeii would appear to be the Oscan word ‘pompe’, for the number five, which suggests that either the community consisted of five hamlets or, perhaps, it was settled in by a family group.

Piacenza comes from the Latin verb ‘placere’, to please. In French, and occasionally in English, it is called Plaisance.

The name means a ‘pleasant abode’, or comely. And the name Brindisi means ‘head of deer’. The city’s name appears, therefore, to refer to the shape of the port that recalls the shape of the head of the animal.

Here’s a little story of no consequence, but it made me smile, so why not share it?! It features an Instagram influencer (yes, don’t we love them?!), a bikini (obviously), the Caribbean (surprise, surprise) and a German sticker (bear with me).

Picture this: Anastasia Karanikolaou, aka ‘stassiebaby’ on Instagram, where she has 4.8 million followers for reasons that are very clearly visible but still unfathomable to me, goes about her daily business.

Which means she posts a picture of herself in a bikini, posing in front of a beach bar in Anguilla, while dutifully including the name of the brand and a discount code, just in case there might be someone among the 4.8 million interested in buying this piece of garment. Just in case, of course. Her intention, we can safely assume, was to draw 100 per cent attention to her and the bikini, not to anything else.

Well, @stassiebaby, fail! Because the clever people of the German state of Baden-Württemberg got in the way.

Not literally, of course, but in the shape of a sticker that is clearly visible on the bar next to our influencer. If you’re not German or don’t read German, you might not notice it but a lot of Anastasia’s followers apparently are or do and started commenting on the sticker instead of on the bikini: ‘Nett hier. Aber waren Sie schon mal in Baden-Württemberg?’ it 94 | Issue 77 | August 2019

reads, meaning ’Nice here. Have you been in Baden-Württemberg, though?’: and this slogan is actually quite well-known in Germany.

It is part of a marketing campaign by the state of Baden-Württemberg that was initially launched in 1999 and became famous for its self-ironic take on perceived local weaknesses, such as the veeeeery strong dialect spoken in this region in south Germany. These official campaigns are very often not cool, but cringe. The Baden-Württemberg one, however, is very good, witty and has achieved a kind of cult status. According to a speaker of the regional BadenWürttemberg government, 35,000 of the ‘Nice here’ stickers are being printed each year – and you can find them on traffic lights and lamp posts, bridges, in bars or on summit crosses all over the world, including New York, Copenhagen, South Africa or South Korea.

Coming back to our bikini post. The first one to spot the sticker was an 18-yearold user (not surprised that he is following our stassiebaby lady!) from Bavaria, which prompted a whole thread of comments, including some people writing in the above mentioned dialect, which is called ‘Schwäbisch’, by the way. I love it how a subversive little sticker managed to divert attention from what was intend-

ed to be in the limelight – despite good old Anastasia doing her best to showcase other things... And here ends my little story that I wanted to share with you. Should you now be encouraged to join the worldwide Baden-Württemberg guerrilla marketing gang, you can order a sticker online for free, find a spot, stick it on and create a lasting and very difficult to remove promotion for BadenWürttemberg. Clever, eh?
