Last week we celebrated Research, Innovation and Improvement Week.
It was a great success with so many people visiting the awareness stands at both RSH and PRH, and also attending the conference which was held on the Friday.
There is a huge amount of research and innovation happening at the Trust – often quietly, behind the scenes – and we must not underestimate the difference this is making for our patients, communities and each other.
Providing high quality, safe care that is evidence-
based and innovative is what we strive to do, and this week was a celebration of that.
You can watch a short video which brings to life some of the incredible research, innovation and improvement initiatives happening at our Trust.
Finally, your new edition of IMPACT – a Research, Innovation and Improvement special edition –is out now bringing you all the latest information about the changes and quality improvements we are making, with your support, as part of our Getting to Good programme.
For more pictures from the week, see page 2.

RII Week 2024

EPR – Thank you Floorwalkers
Last week was the final week of dedicated floorwalker support post Go Live for CareFlow.
We would like to say a huge thank you to our floorwalkers, who have provided 24/7 support for over five weeks, as we transitioned to the new patient administration system.
The floorwalkers were essential, giving the Trust support before, during and after the Go Live weekend. You will have seen them across both hospital sites in EPR t-shirts, always on hand to help colleagues with their queries.

The work that they completed was truly incredible and we couldn’t have done it without them.
We have now transitioned to business as usual support for CareFlow. This means if you need any further support, please use the quick reference guides (QRGs) in the first instance as most of the answers will be available through these guides.
You can raise an IT self service portal request relating to CareFlow and Patient Flow if there is an issue with the system. Alternatively, requests can also be logged via the IT Service Desk by calling x2522.

Real Time Data:
Do It Now - not later

Admission, Discharge and Transfers
All Ward Clerks and Nurses are able to admit, discharge and transfer patients between wards in CareFlow. Please ensure that you have completed your training and that you take responsibility for updating the system if something changes
Correct Consultant
It is vital that patients are admitted under the correct consultant and that the named consultant is updated at the point of transfer of care If you are unsure of who the consultant should be, please check Rotawatch Note: Nurses, Doctors and Ward Clerks can all update named consultant

Knitted toys for children in Phlebotomy
Phlebotomy Supervisor Kathryn Butcher put out a request on Facebook asking if anyone could help out the Phlebotomy department.
She asked for knitters to knit some toys that could be given out to children who were attending to have blood tests.
Kathryn had such an amazing response, she said:

Pride Month
From Wednesday 1 June, we will be celebrating Pride Month.
“We have had so many wonderful donations, my colleague Kerry who shared the post even had people coming up to her at a local dog show to give her some toys. We have also had some beautiful cardigans donated to us which we have passed on to the children’s ward. It really makes a difference to our young patients and they go away cuddling their special toy.”

Pride Month commences on this date every year, as it honours the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, USA. The uprising began in the early hours of 28 June 1969 when the New York City Police raided the Stonewall Inn.
Due to the rough treatment of the patrons, the neighbourhood residents started a six-day protest, which led to violent clashes with the police. These riots were a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the USA and around the world.
Pride Month is important for so many reasons. It highlights the great strides taken towards LGBTQIA+ equality, but it also reminds us that there is much more work to be done.
As a Trust, we are fully committed to becoming a more inclusive place for colleagues, patients, and
visitors, but to achieve this, we need the support of our workforce. There are many inclusion activities and events taking place during June, please do come along and get involved.
• Come to the Mytton Restaurant on Wednesday 5 June from 12-3pm and visit the Pride awareness stand. The team will also be in the Women and Children’s reception on Wednesday 19 June from 8.30am-1.30pm
• Fill out a pledge card and pick up a rainbow badge. These are available in the libraries
• Visit the libraries to read more about Pride
• Join the Pride Network Meeting on Friday 21 June from 11.30am-12.30pm on MS Teams
• Keep an eye out for the Pride Flag projections on the buildings
More details will be shared throughout the week.
Another successful SaTH Charity Football Tournament
The second annual SaTH Charity Football Tournament took place on Sunday 19 May at the Sports Village in Shrewsbury.
The event was a great success with 140 members of staff from SaTH taking part. Together they raised £4,800 for the Dementia Appeal for SaTH Charity.
The event was organised by Mark Rawlings, a porter based at RSH. This year 14 teams took par - Mark was also of the captain of the team Royal Madrid. He organised the first tournament in 2023 which raised over £1,000 for SaTH Charity and this year’s tournament has smashed this target.
Mark said: “I wanted to do something football related after retiring from Sunday league football, so I organised the first SaTH Charity football tournament last year. It was a great way to give back to the hospital, support our patients and have some fun.”
Dr Ross Wilkinson a Physical Activity Champion who captained the team Not So Athletico UTC FC said: “This tournament is a great opportunity
to draw together lots of different staff groups, to boost team morale and to get people active outside together.”
Karen Breese, Dementia Care Clinical Specialist, said, “We are so grateful to Mark and the players for choosing the Dementia Care Appeal, the money raised will make a real difference to our patients and enable us to provide more support.”
Teresa Boughey, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said of the event: “I was delighted to attend the SaTH Charity football tournament and watch our staff come together to support such a great cause.”
“Congratulations to the winning team Drongo United and the runners-up AMFC. Thank you to everyone who came along to support the event and everyone who donated. A special thank you goes to the Sundorne Sports Village for hosting the event, Sarah Hyde for baking the cakes and to the Wellington Cobbler for donating the trophies and medals.”

AMU Race for Life
Congratulations to colleagues from AMU who took part in the 5k Race for Life at Telford Town park last weekend. Mary, Holly, Lauren, Carra, Naomi and Paige were raising funds for Cancer Research UK.

Reconditioning Games – parkrun
Colleagues at SaTH can earn their bronze recognition games certificate by taking part in a parkrun.
Marie Mason, a trainer with the OD Team, has been taking part in parkruns since 2015. Over the years she has completed 282 parkruns in 72 locations and managed to include two different countries.
Marie said: “The only way to start my weekend is with a parkrun. I have recently visited Nova Prestatyn and Wepre, both North Wales. My favourites definitely visiting Bushy Park just before lock down in 2020 and Lower Hutt in New Zealand when I visited my brother in 2019.
“It’s such a great way to recharge after a busy week, out in the fresh air and no pressure – you go at your own pace and there are volunteer marshals to guide you around the course and a tail walker who is last to ensure everyone is back.”
“For those with children aged between four and 14 years there is junior parkrun which takes place on a Sunday – nearest events are Telford and Shrewsbury and the juniors cover a 2k distance.”
You can register for your own parkrun barcode and receive results via text and email after each event. www.parkrun.org.uk
If you take part in a parkrun and would like to earn your bronze reconditioning certificate, all you need to do is send in a photograph of yourself to sath.

Professional Advocates masterclass
The first Masterclass for qualified Professional Advocates (PA) (Nurse/ Midwife/AHP) was held at SaTH in April.
Colleagues were joined by Professional Nurse Advocates from RJAH and ShropCom at SERII and the masterclass was supported by SaTH’s Staff Psychology team.
The masterclass gave an overview of the trauma pathway, provided information on the different types of debriefs and discussed the role of the PA in psychological debriefs.
The day itself was interactive, providing support on how to have a difficult conversation and developing listening skills.
Thank you to SaTH Charity for helping to provide refreshments.
Karen and Keira, the PNA/PMA Leads, said: “The feedback from our first masterclass was really positive, which has encouraged us to organise the next one.
“We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported this and played a part in it coming together, especially our amazing Professional Advocates and Staff Psychology Team.”

Parking update
We have received several reports of colleagues and contractors parking on Squinter Pip Way in Bowbrook, Shrewsbury, and the surrounding residential areas. We kindly ask everyone to avoid parking in these areas and instead use the designated parking areas at RSH.
Alternatively, you may consider other methods of transport, such as the Oxon Park & Ride service
A big thank you to all colleagues who are already utilising the Park and Ride services. Despite these efforts, demand for parking still exceeds our current capacity. We encourage everyone to adapt their
Testimonial Spotlight
We’re pleased to feature a testimonial from Kay Williams, HCA from the Day Surgery Unit (DSU) at RSH, emphasising the impact of alternative travel options:
routines where possible to help save spaces for patients and colleagues who need them most.
We also thank all managers who joined our recent parking Q&A session. The questions and answers from this session are now available on the intranet.
Please ensure you park correctly and adhere to the parking rules, which can be found on the intranet. If you wish to cancel your parking permit, detailed instructions are provided in the colleague message
“I’m unable to use the Park and Ride scheme as a shift worker but want to thank colleagues, who are finding alternative ways to commute to work and free up spaces for people like me who rely on these spaces. Thank you all for your support and teamwork.” Kay’s story highlights the significance of our collective efforts in effectively managing parking.

Thank you for your continued co-operation and support in making our parking system work for everyone.

LET IT GROW...

Help biodiversity thrive this year!
This year we are taking part in No Mow May by leaving small patches of grass around our sites to grow, providing food for bees, beetles and insects which are important for pollinating flowers, and a crucial part of the food chain

Are you taking part?
We are encouraging colleagues to join in at work or at home by leaving a part of grass un-mowed or by planting a pollinator either in the garden, a pot by the door or a window box there really is no space too small!

Diversity and Inclusivity
For some people in the UK, there are still unfair and avoidable inequalities in their health and in their access to and experiences of NHS services. The Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust (SaTH) wants to address these inequalities to meet, and exceed, our patients cultural and specific health concerns and achieve a high standard of patient care and patient experience.
As a member of the EDI Advocates Group, you would work collaboratively to support and challenge SaTH in identifying existing health inequalities and develop action plans to tackle and eliminate such issues. The ultimate aim is to ensure everyone at SaTH has a great patient experience, no matter their age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership and pregnancy and maternity.

To all the staff at the Chemotherapy Day Unit, a huge thank you! It has been three years since I first walked into the unit, feeling very vulnerable and very shocked by my diagnosis. You were so kind, so attentive to detail, so able to make me feel that I would cope okay. You had helpful tips and I felt safe, six rounds later the inoperable became possibly operable so we gave it a go. Hurray - it worked. It was a rough year, much of it forgotten, but it extended my life. Thank you all for the parts you played. I have had excellent care from consultants and yourselves.
