Our site at RSH is changing Over the next few years there will be increased construction traffic and changes to the site to enable us to have an amazing new hospital building in which we can provide the best care for our patients

We need you - get on board the Park & Ride

27 June 2025

11,000 staff journeys

Whilst those changes take place, we need you, our colleagues, to change the way you come to work. We need you to make a small change to make sure our patients can get to our hospital safely to park and to ensure our shift working and on-call colleagues can park on-site

Over 100 colleagues cycled to work during bike week

2,000 patient journeys on the Park & Ride this year

Thank you to everyone that is already using the Park & Ride service and making those changes - it is really appreciated but we need more of our colleagues to get on board We also have growing numbers of colleagues taking part in lift-share and walking or cycling to work

Parking Charge Notices (PCN) and parking on residential streets

We are now enforcing all car parking areas at RSH This includes patients parking in staff parking areas and staff parking in patient areas Staff parking in patient car parks will need to pay the patient rate for parking through the pay stations located at the hospital Patient car parks are not covered by the payas-you-go permit and are an additional charge at the patient rate

We have numerous complaints on a weekly basis from our neighbours who are reporting dangerous parking on their residential streets This includes parking on dropped kerbs and near junctions

We need colleagues to align with our values and work with us to ensure the very best experience for our patients and also to work in partnership with our neighbours to keep their streets safe and accessible

We welcome all your feedback and we want to make changes that benefit everyone If you are not using the Park & Ride, let us know why it doesn’t work for you, talk to your managers if there are obstacles in the way - they may be able to help.

Purple zone - FAQs

Thank you to everyone for your patience over the last few weeks as we moved the purple zone parking and put together a new process for this area We have received a few questions about the purple zone which we have answered below.

Why is the purple zone only available after 8.45am? The purple zone is only available after 8 45am - before this time, there are spaces available for staff in the staff car parks and the Park & Ride is available

What if I am on-call and have to attend in an emergency? We have been working closely with our colleagues in the Surgical Team and we have two emergency spaces available to general surgery on-call colleagues These spaces are located by the blue parking hut near the Treatment Centre entrance.

What should you do if you think you are eligible for purple zone parking? If you think you may be eligible to park in the purple zone you should ask your line manger to email sth-tr.carparking@nhs.net. Full details and criteria can be found on the intranet.
