NHS Birthday and Values Week celebrations

This week members of the Executive Team have been busy visiting teams and departments across our hospitals and our offsite areas – to celebrate the NHS birthday and Values Week.

Thank you to everyone for getting involved and taking part in the celebrations!

Long Service Awards

This week we honoured our colleagues who have completed 25, 40 and even 50 years of service with the NHS.

At a very special Long Service Awards, we celebrated the outstanding commitment and dedication of our valued colleagues.

We also said a huge thank you to our colleagues Jayne Smith and Sneta Devi, who have both reached the incredible 50-year milestone.

This is a remarkable achievement when we consider how much the NHS has changed over the years. And with over 940 years of experience in the room, it was a very special day indeed.

Moving to Excellence Award winners

As part of Values Week we have been delighted to announce our first Moving to Excellence Award winners.

We had almost 150 amazing nominations across our divisions and corporate teams, and the judges had a really tough job in selecting their winners.

These new awards shine a spotlight on colleagues and teams who are providing exceptional care for our patients, directly or indirectly, and those who are helping us to move to excellence by improving our performance and delivering value for patients.

Congratulations and a big thank you to you all!

How we are living our Values

Partnering

All of us, no matter your role, work together with our patients, their families, colleagues, organisations across our local health and care system, universities or other stakeholders to achieve our vision.

Working in partnership is incredibly important and every day we support, and are supported by, many different organisations all with the same aim – to provide excellent care for the communities we serve.

Caring

A good example of this is our current work around Better Together, and our exploration of forming a Group with Shropcom.

We really want to hear your ideas and suggestions on how we build a Group model that works best for our communities. Please join a staff session to share your views. You can watch a video of a previous session, hosted by your Chair in Common, Andrew Morgan, online

This value is all about showing compassion, respect and empathy for our patients, families, communities, and each other.

In recent years we have listened to your feedback and implemented health and wellbeing support, recognition schemes and other initiatives to improve the working culture within our organisation. One such example is the Menopause Support Package. We’re passionate about the wellbeing of our colleagues and that means talking about menopause openly.

The Menopause support programme was launched earlier in the year and offers wellbeing and education sessions to those who are navigating this time of their lives.

There are lectures, yoga sessions, Menopause Advocate training sessions amongst the offering and a SaTH Menopause Toolkit. We highly encourage everyone to read up on this topic so you can also support those around you.

Angela Loughlin, Menopause Advocate said. “The support that is being made available to our workforce who are dealing with menopause symptoms is so comprehensive, whether you are looking for expert advice about HRT or how to look after your mental health or want some practical holistic tips on living through menopause and beyond healthily then there is something for everyone in the programme. We want to build a community of people who will support each other.”

Ambitious

By setting and achieving high standards for ourselves, personally and professionally, we can ensure the delivery of high-quality care for today and in the future. It is also about embracing innovation, so we can continuously improve the quality and sustainability of our services.

One such example is the TRIOMIC cancer study. This week we had the pleasure of officially opening three purpose-built clinic rooms, a decontamination room and consent area with Jon Lacy-Colson at the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Telford.

More than 1,000 patients have been recruited for the £1 million research study since it was launched last year and the new clinics will mean that we can see more patients – 150 appointments per week.

The study could revolutionise the diagnosis of colorectal cancer not just in the county, but potentially worldwide.

Colorectal cancer affects 42,000 people a year (one in 17) in the UK and SaTH sees about 350 cases a year. The TRIOMIC study, which involves a new test, will reduce the amount of time patients are waiting and worrying about a colorectal cancer diagnosis. In addition to hugely improving the experience of patients, the study will ease the pressures on colleagues.

Trusted

Trusted is all about the importance of being open, transparent and reliable, continuously learning, doing our best to strive to deliver excellent care for our communities.

One such team who embody this value is Ward 35, who were finalists for a Trust Celebratory Award in 2024. See below their wonderful words of support:

“They work extremely hard and receive several thank you cards a week with comments including, “words are not enough to express the kindness received. Thank you for all the care, attention, support and friendship over many years.”

“Ward 35 is welcoming as you enter, all colleagues are enthusiastic at ensuring that cleanliness audits are top scoring and if any faults are found they are immediately rectified as they know how important it is. The team also value students and enjoy

Jon, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Chief Investigator for the trial, said: “The trial offers the Trust the chance to be at the forefront of a new exciting development in colorectal cancer, both in terms of the model of care by moving the pathway into a CDC rather than competing with space in an acute trust, and being at the forefront of a new diagnostic test.

“During the trial, every patient will get a face-toface consultation with a clinical nurse specialist at the CDC within five days of being referred by their GP. They won’t have to go to an acute hospital.”

teaching them, seeing knowledge grow within their training.”

Another example of colleagues living and breathing the value of ‘Trusted’ is our very own Theatres Academy which has been nominated in the prestigious Nursing Times Awards 2025 in the Theatre and Surgical Award category. They are doing wonderful things including developing the academy for theatres staff across our hospitals to receive consistent training and support, which in turn improves the care we deliver as a team.
