Changes to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site

Marking the first major milestone in the construction process, the main Outpatients entrance will close on Monday 29 July.

Our teams are doing everything possible to minimise disruption for our patients and colleagues during the building phase. We have updated our maps and resources to help guide people through the changes, and you can find them by following this link to our website.

These changes may mean patients need a little extra support to find their way around our site, please ask whether they need any help.

Finally, a massive thank you to our volunteers and colleagues who are supporting with signposting, particularly next week.

We want our culture to be positive, compassionate, and inclusive – and we all have our part to play. Following your feedback, in recent years we have implemented a cultural transformation programme built around three flagship programmes which has brought about cultural improvements across all the People Promise elements and themes.

What we did:

• Introduced a Civility, Respect and Inclusion programme

• Introduced flexible working opportunities

• Reviewed the appraisal process

• Boosted the health and wellbeing offer, including bereavement, menopause and financial support

• Key benefits and outcomes:

• SaTH has seen an increase in scores for all the People Promise elements as evidenced by the NHS Staff Survey 2023 scores

• An increase in staff recommending SaTH as a place to work to 49.35 per cent, the highest in five years

• A year-on-year increase in scores for the We work flexibly People Promise, with the percentage of colleagues feeling satisfied/very satisfied with the opportunities for flexible working increasing by 7.08

• An increase in scores for the sub-theme of appraisals since 2021

• SaTH was ranked among the top ten trusts for improvements in four of the People Promise elements including staff engagement

• Retention across the organisation as a whole has seen a reduction from 15 per cent in April 2022 to 10.8 per cent in April 2024

Thank you for sharing your feedback – whether it be via the NHS Staff Survey, People Pulse surveys or the making a Difference Together platform. Find out about more improvements we are making here

South Asian Heritage Month

From Thursday 18 July until Saturday 17 August, we are recognising South Asian Heritage Month. People of South Asian heritage are a significant part of the British population, with about 1 in every 20 people in the country being of South Asian heritage. The countries that are included in this celebratory month are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The theme for 2024 is “Free to be me”.

The website www.southasianheritage.org.uk highlights a number of themes that resonate with the South Asian community and embody the spirit of the “Free to be me” message.

• Identity: Who are you, and what makes you unique?

• Community: How do we support and uplift each other?

• Gender: What does gender mean in your cultural context?

• Faith: How does your faith shape your life?

• Family: What role does family play in your story?

• Life Choices: How have your life choices been shaped by your South Asian heritage?

• Positive Impacts: What positive impacts has your South Asian background had on your life in the UK?

Here at SaTH we are marking the month with awareness stands on Thursday 1 August from 10am -2pm in Captain Tom’s Garden, RSH, and on Friday 2 August from 10am – 2pm in Captain Tom’s Courtyard.

You can also visit the libraries at both sites to learn more.

Innovation Award

Adam led the working group that successfully developed the case for our surgical robot. This required the development of a very strong unified multi-specialty and multi-professional team. One of the primary aims of the work was to improve recruitment and retention and we have seen more interest in specialist staff joining us in response to the installation of the robot. This required a real eye for the future of surgery for our patients and tenacious approach to getting things done through many ups and downs along the way.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Anne Borley, Sister on Ward 23, Oncology and Haematology

Anne is an inspiration to so many patients and colleagues whom she has cared for and worked with for 50 years. She always goes the extra mile for the ward and her patients. One of her nominators states: “Anne has been the back bone of the haematology ward for several decades. She is totally patient-focused and goes above and beyond to ensure their experience through such traumatic events is as smooth, supported and well-informed as possible. She has provided a gold standard care to thousands of patients.”

Sustainability/Green Award

Ian and the team work tirelessly to deliver sustainable solutions for all catering items. A large amount of work has been carried out to improve our carbon footprint and reduce the waste that is sent to landfill. This includes the move from plastic to glass and proper crockery on wards, reducing single use plastic and food waste. The team has lots of exciting further plans for the future and it is amazing to see.

Volunteer of the Year Award

John and Judi have contributed a combined total of over 1,000 hours of volunteering to PRH, and counting. They truly demonstrate our Trust values in the roles they play. As well as their regular roles, they both step up at times of need to help during critical incidents and at short notice.

Sterile Services Bake Sale

On her JustGiving page Surjeet wrote “Right now, there are thousands of children and young people whose lives revolve around doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, and grueling treatment. By granting their wishes, we can give them something positive to focus on and something to look forward to”.

On June 20, the longest day of the year, Surjeet Kaur of the Sterile Services Department, participated in a personal challenge to be a ‘ray of sunshine’ for seriously ill children and young people.

She celebrated by asking family, friends, and colleagues to join her in wearing something yellow for the day and organised a bake sale with colleagues at work to raise awareness and funds. This small act was part of a larger effort to raise funds for Rays of Sunshine, a charity dedicated to making the world a brighter place for those who need it most.

She went on to say “Our son Yuvraj has fought a life saving cancer battle to be here with us today and we are thankful to Rays of Sunshine for making Yuvraj’s Wish to meet KSI and the Sidemen come true! He will always remember what a wonderful day he had and how he felt meeting his favourite YouTubers.”

Through the generous donations of friends and colleagues, Surjeet has so far raised an incredible £365, for the charity.

SAS Development Day

An away day, which focuses on personal development and wellbeing, was held for Specialty and Specialist (SAS) Team Doctors, and was a great success.

Katie Shellis, SAS Advocate and Dr Jenni Rowlands, Deputy Medical Director supported by the Medical Director Services Team organised the Development Day for our SAS Doctors as part of their continual personal development programme for 2024. The event took place off site at the Wroxeter Hotel in Shrewsbury.

The day continued with a series of seminars and workshops, covering topics such as GMC report – ‘Spotlight on SAS doctors’, wellbeing and mindfulness, communication skills and difficult conversations and meditation and breath.

Well over a third of the SAS doctor workforce attended – 56 doctors from various fields took the time to come together for a day of self-care and personal growth.

The day began with a DiSC assessment feedback session, which proved to be a very interactive, fun session and was well received by all.

Paediatric Vitals - We are live

Last week we launched Paediatric Vitals, a new digital way to record children’s observations in paediatric wards and our emergency department. Paediatric Vitals will mean that records can be accessed instantly with real time information from any device in the Trust. It also supports early detection and intervention for at-risk patients through more accurate and timely monitoring.

Staff have reported the system is user friendly, a good visual aid and a positive change to the unit.

Zara Stubbs, Paediatric Senior Sister and Paediatric Lead Nurse for Accident and Emergency added “Paediatric vitals has had a very positive affect in the Emergency Department. The process is a lot quicker compared to paper and the team have reported back it’s a better process.”

Esme Griffiths, Senior Paediatric Practice Education Facilitator and Emma Higgins, Paediatric Practice Education Facilitator said “We are very excited about the introduction of Paediatric Vitals within the service. After a successful roll out period we have received positive feedback from staff using the new Vitals system, expressing how beneficial it is in the early recognition of the deteriorating patient.

We would like to say a massive thank you and well done to all teams involved. Launching a new system can be challenging but colleagues worked diligently to ensure it went smoothly.

The implementation of Paediatric vitals is part of the wider digital transformation programme, which you can read about on the intranet

Birthday celebrations for SaTH Charity Swan Fund

SaTH Charity Swan Fund (for end of life care) recently celebrated its ninth birthday with a knitter’s café to thank all the people who support our families with knitted hearts and those who volunteer their time to support the end of life patients.

Hearts are made in matching pairs with one given to the patients who are reaching the end of their life and the matching one is given to their loved ones. The knitters who attended the cafe brought in a huge stash of hearts ready for use, with one knitter bringing in an amazing 300 hearts.

Jules Lewis, End of Life Care Lead Nurse, also brought in her portrait which was painted as part of a special BBC series of “Extraordinary Portraits” introduced by Bill Bailey to mark the 75th birthday of the NHS last year. The portrait was painted by Belinda Eaton as part of the programme.

The event was attended by Julia Clarke, Director of Public Participation, who said: “We want to thank everyone who has supported the Swan fund over the last nine years, the fund is well supported and has raised £98,000 in the past nine years. This money has been used to create Swan (End of Life) rooms around the hospital to make the environment peaceful and calm for patients and their loved ones.”

Jules said “We are so grateful to all of our supporters including those who take time to knit hearts for our patients, we know the relatives find so much comfort in receiving a heart, a tangible connection with their loved one that they treasure.”
