On October 4, many gathered under stadium lights at CoolToday Park for Manasota Mystique: The Ballpark Bash, an elegant fundraiser presented by The Aesthetics Lounge & Spa and hosted by the Englewood Chamber of Commerce. The event, held from 5 to 10pm, offered guests a taste of highend gala flair in a ballpark setting, combining fine dining, live entertainment, auctions, networking and a fireworks finale. Upon arrival, attendees were greeted with an open bar and passed hors d’oeuvres before sitting down to a multi-course fall-inspired buffet. The menu featured maple-glazed salmon, French onion–braised beef, seared chicken breast with apple sage butter, smashed fingerling potatoes, sautéed green beans, and apple crisp with salted caramel crumb, among other offerings. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed music, games, dancing and both live and silent auctions. The night culminated in a private fireworks display, sponsored by Shoreline Mortgage Group. Proceeds from the event support a range of local initiatives. Back Pain That Steals More Than Just Comfort
For many people living with chronic lower back pain, sciatica, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, daily life becomes a negotiation with discomfort Bending to tie a shoe, lifting a grocery bag, or standing in line can trigger pain that radiates down the legs or locks the body in tension Sleep becomes disrupted, and mornings are often the hardest; waking with aching stiffness that makes even getting out of bed a struggle
Some experience a constant, dull ache; others describe sharp, shooting pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs In spinal stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal compresses nerves, often mimicking sciatica or neuropathy Over time, people stop doing the things they love; not by choice, but because of pain, fear of flare-ups, or loss of mobility While some are offered injections

or surgery, many are told to simply manage their symptoms with medication When discomfort starts to steal the moments that matter most, it’s time to consider a new approach
An Integrative Alternative
At Sage Point Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in Venice, FL, founder Lauren Milligan and her team offer non-invasive, drug-free options for chronic back pain and spinal conditions
Every patient begins with a comprehensive assessment to determine whether they are a candidate for care This may include a physical exam and functional testing to evaluate nerve irritation, muscle tension, inflammation, and movement patterns
When appropriate, the clinic provides a personalized treatment plan designed to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and support healing using a blend of acupuncture and advanced integrative therapies “We focus on what’s driving the pain, not just where it hurts,” says Dr Milligan “And we tailor every care plan to the specific individual ”
Patient Case Study: Restoring Confidence
After
Years of Pain
Carol, a 72-year-old Venice resident, came to the clinic after years of worsening lower back pain Her discomfort radiated down her legs and made it difficult to drive, walk, or perform daily tasks
Mornings were especially hard, she often woke feeling locked in her body
Her Neurologist had prescribed medication, but it offered little relief She had started to withdraw from family activities, including walking her grandchildren to school, and the annual family cruise A thorough initial assessment at Sage Point Acupuncture revealed inflammation, postural compensations, and signs of nerve compression
Based on her new patient consultation, Carol was found to be a good candidate for care A personalized treatment plan was created using acupuncture, integrative medicine treatment, and corrective movement guidance to reduce pain and restore function
Over the following weeks, Carol noticed improvements in flexibility, confidence, and pain reduction By the end of her treatment plan, she had resumed walking short distances and was picking up her grandkids from school and taking them to their activities again Routines that once felt out of reach
There’s Still Time to Reclaim Your Life
Many patients at Sage Point Acupuncture experience improvements, even after years of symptoms, when the right support is in place If you’ve been sidelined by back pain or spinal issues, don’t wait. Your next chapter doesn’t have to be written in pain Call today to set up a consultation at (941) 451 - 8154
When pain disrupts even the simplest routines, the right treatment can change everything

SHORE & KAYAK FISHING SHORE & KAYAK FISHING
BY KIMBALL & LES BEERY
The Number One Artificial
When I was a kid growing up in Orlando, jigs were the only lure I carried in my tackle box. For that matter, they were the only lure I could afford with my mowing money. Jigs and pork rind helped me catch small bass and bluegill from lakes within bicycling distance. Later, as I became more mobile, I found they also worked on shad in the St. Johns River, trolling them in the deep bends near Lemon Bluff. Jigs were also my favorite when I started fishing saltwater and landed snapper, lady fish, pompano, snook and mackerel from “Red Shell” Beach on the east coast. Don’t look for that spot on a map; it’s probably paved with condos by now. On offshore trips, jigs brought grouper and amberjack as well as dolphin to the boat. In short, anything that eats baitfish or even crustaceans will hit a jig...if
the angler makes it look frisky but easy to catch.
A trip to the tackle shop will dazzle you with how many different materials, colors, sizes and designs are available. Jigs were originally made of lead heads with some fibers attached to hide the hook and give it volume as it slowed the fall. These days, those jigs still catch fish, but plastic tails have taken over much of the market. Our own preference is plastic tails in a shad tail design. Changing colors, designs, sizes or switching to scented or even live baits with a jig head is quick and easy compared to tying on a different hair jig for each change. Although wild colors like “electric chicken” catch fish, we usually try to “match the hatch” with more natural colors.
Jig heads vary in design and color. Older styles had the eye positioned back on the head which captured weeds on the retrieve. Newer styles have the eye at the front, so weeds
picked up by the line slide off the jig. The CAL jigs are an example of this type. Many newer styles also have glass eyes that gamefish key on during the attack. Jig weight varies on the flats where we kayak, a 16th ounce or 1/8th ounce seems to work best. Heavier jigs dig too deep when worked slowly and end up tangled in the weeds during slower retrieves. As for head color the “ancient wisdom” of red on the flats and white on the beaches still works for me. Kimball likes chartreuse though and out fishes me regularly. Much heavier jigs are needed for targeting snook in deep channels around bridges. The action of the jig, when jig fishing, is where the angler gets involved. There are different retrieves used by experienced anglers, but they are all variations of the “hop and drop” presentation that will work in most situations. The object is to quickly lift the jig from the bottom and then let it sink down before the next jerk.
WOMEN MEAN BUSINESS WOMEN MEAN BUSINESS
Gamefish notice rapid movement when you jerk the lure up off the bottom which simulates a spooked baitfish. When the jig falls, it looks like an easy, disoriented meal and this is when most strikes occur. Just keep reeling to detect these subtle strikes. If the grass is thick on the flats, an alternate way to rig a jig tail is weedless on a 2/0 wide gap hook with a bullet weight the way bass anglers rig a worm. The main concept to keep in mind is that you need to move the jig slower when the water is cold. That is why we use mostly 1/16th ounce jigs in the winter.
Retrieve the jig faster when targeting high speed gamefish like Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, ladyfish, or bluefish. It is hard to retrieve a lure too fast for these species. Often, these fish lose interest if the lure slows down or drops towards the bottom. Other times, for snook, trout, redfish and pompano, a slow steady retrieve just over the top of the bottom grass
is effective. We just keep trying everything; different colors of tails, different speeds of retrieve, different depths, and different spots until we get into some fish. You should too.
Kimball and Les Beery, authors of “Angler’s Guide to Shore and KAYAK Fishing Southwest Florida”, contribute these excerpts from both Waterproof books to promote the excellent fishing available in the Englewood area. Dogs at Work: Meet Layla at Thoroughbred Golf Carts
At Thoroughbred Golf Carts, one of the most adored team members doesn’t answer phones or repair carts—she greets visitors with a wagging tail. Meet Layla, a ten-year-old Chiweenie who has become a loyal and loving fixture at the shop.
Layla’s days are filled with simple pleasures: lounging in the sun, snuggling up with her family, riding in the car, and, of course, enjoying her favorite treats, especially carrots. She’s happiest around people who love dogs, often joining employees for lunch and sneaking in a few extra snacks before settling down for one of her many naps.
Rescued by her family years ago, Layla has grown into a treasured part of both her home and the workplace. Her owner describes her as “a loving asset to our family,” and it’s clear she has brought joy, comfort, and plenty of personality to Thoroughbred Golf Carts.

Sarasota County’s Animal Services is inviting the community to take part in two short-term foster programs designed to give dogs a muchneeded break and help them shine for potential adopters. With Doggie Day Out, participants can treat a pup to a fun day of walks, beach time, naps, or even a special “pup stop” for a treat before returning them to the shelter. For those seeking a little more time, the Weekend Warrior program allows families to welcome a dog into their home for a short stay filled with snuggles, walks, and relaxation. Both programs provide valuable insight into each dog’s personality outside the shelter, helping staff make the perfect adoption match while giving participants the joy of making a difference.
