Cedar Point Environmental Park Opens Story Book Walk
Cedar Point Environmental Park has opened a new self-guided storybook walk dedicated to the Gopher Tortoise. Conservation efforts include protecting existing habitats, restoring damaged areas, and creating new safe sites. Relocation programs from high-risk areas have also shown progress. The new selfguided story trail aims to build an understanding of the tortoise and why protection is necessary. Finally, we have a break from the summer heat as Fall heads south into Southwest Florida. Cool nights arrive before the winter season when the crowds arrive. The cooling Gulf temperatures are welcomed by the fish that call the beaches around here home. Add the arrival of bait schools from the north and we have most of the ingredients for a beach fishing trip.

The final factors to consider; wind, tide and light. An offshore wind helps to flatten the surf which cleans up the water and makes lures more visible to sight feeders like snook and Spanish mackerel. High tide pushes water and bait into the first trough off the beach making long casts and heavy weights unnecessary. Lower light levels at dawn and dusk help predators ambush bait fish as they move with the tide. When an angler finds most of these factors aligned, time has come today for a walk on the beach.
whiting but will also draw strikes from everything else. Also called mole crabs, they are found along the shoreline in the sand and shell bottom. A shark’s tooth rake will catch them but it’s cumbersome. We generally find folks happy to share a few fleas from their scooper with us. A small cast net can capture “white bait”, a general term for baitfish on the beach. Keep a few to use right away and turn the rest back. They die quickly in a bucket.
We usually carry artificial lures to avoid the hassle of bait collection or maintenance on a walk down the beach. Our goto lure is a ¼ ounce white or chartreuse jig head with a white and silver plastic tail. This can be retrieved fast if mackerel or ladyfish are around or hopped slowly across the bottom for flounder, redfish, drum, and whiting. For many of these bottom feeders, adding a small piece of a scented bait like “fish bites” or Gulp! may increase strikes.

possible straight out to sea. Most bait and their predators are found in the trough between the beach and the first sand bar. Angle your cast so the lure or bait drops into the trough off the sand bar on its way back to shore. Try to keep your lure or bait in this strike zone for as long as possible during the retrieve.

We don’t carry much gear for our beach walks. A small daypack or shoulder bag carries water, sandals, a few lures, hooks, weights, leader, pliers and a camera/phone. It can also carry a few live shrimp if needed. We soak a small towel in bait bucket water and wring it out. Roll the shrimp in the towel and wrap the towel in an ice mat. Now put shrimp, towel, and ice mat into a zip lock bag that goes into the pack. They may be a little slow as they warm up but will be frisky on the hook.

What do all these people have in common? They suffer from peripheral neuropathy. It's estimated that more than 20 million people in the United States have peripheral neuropathy Unfortunately, this figure may be significantly higher as the disease is often misdiagnosed because of its wide array of symptoms
Dr Lauren Milligan of Sage Point Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in Venice, FL shares this belief "I ve been treating neuropathy in all its various forms, for years and so often my patients come to me because of the symptoms, not because of a diagnosis They saw one of my television appearances or read the testimonial of another patient and say to themselves, 'Hey, I feel the same thing' "

I was so depressed "
Fortunately, Frankie would eventually see Dr Milligan on the local news talking about similar symptoms and how she offers a real solution at Sage Point Acupuncture "I just knew I had to see her. She was my last hope."
"Almost all of our patients come to us with a story similar to Frankie's They've been everywhere else They've been told there s no hope They've been told it s just part of getting older'," shares Taylor, a Patient Care Technician at Sage Point Acupuncture "It just breaks my heart, but I know how much we can help people like Frankie, so I'm always so happy when they walk through our door "
Those diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy often face a very grim reality: Western medicine declares that there is no solution while most alternative therapies carry large price tags and offer little to no resolve Which is why Dr Milligan and the staff at Sage Point Acupuncture pride themselves on being 'the last resort with the best results'
D ERTISEMENT is nerves begin deteriorate, they continue until are completely suffering "In pain is necessaril thing "
"I just can't say enough about Sage Point," Frankie shared through tears of joy "My husband and I moved here 3 years ago, he walks down to the Jetty and along the beach almost every evening I always stayed home because of the pain and discomfort Yesterday, I walked with him! Next week we re starting dance lessons I am truly living life these days "
"According to Frankie's test results, she has seen a 74% improvement in pain and functionality, which is on par with a majority of our patients " shares Taylor, "But more important than those test results is the joy she s expressed being here and hearing about all the amazing things she's able to do because she feels great!"
By seamlessly blending the ancient science of acupuncture with modern medical solutions, Dr Milligan has achieved a 90% success rate in reversing the effects of neuropathy She starts each patient with an initial consultation during which a sensory exam is performed "This not only aids in making a proper diagnosis, but it helps to define just how much nerve damage has occurred" tells the doctor "This is important because if a patient has suffered more than 95% damage, there is little that I can do to help them I'm familiar with the medical miracle but I know my limits as a practitioner and the limits of my medicine "
" neuropathy years
Frankie M of Venice testified to this "I remember my husband driving me to my consultation and I saw a woman running just outside our neighborhood I was so envious - I just kept thinking 'I would give anything just to walk again' My primary care doctor told me my troubles with pain and balance were just symptoms of old age and gave me a prescription
Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves and this damage is commonly caused by lack of blood flow in the hands and feet A lack of blood flow results in a lack of nutrients; the nerves then begin to degenerate and die which causes pain ranging from discomfort to debilitation Because neuropathy is a degenerative condition, once those nerves begin to deteriorate, they continue to do so until they are completely expired, leaving those suffering with crippling balance issues "In this case, the absence of pain is not necessarily a good thing," shares Dr Milligan "This usually indicates that your nerves are hanging on by a fragile thread "
So how exactly is Dr Milligan able to reverse the effects of this degenerative disease? "Acupuncture has been used to increase blood flow for thousands of years which helps to get the necessary nutrients to the affected nerves But the real magic happens when I integrate ATP Resonance BioTherapy® This is based off the tech that was originally developed by NASA to expedite recovery and healing "
When it comes to treating peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its origin, early detection greatly improves your chances of a full recovery
If you or someone you love are suffering with chronic pain that presents as burning, tingling or pins and needles', or you've recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, it is important to know that there are options
There is hope

Give a Shelter Pet a Mini Vacation
Life in the shelter is safe and loving, but nothing compares to new adventures, quiet time, and one-on-one companionship. Sarasota County’s Animal Services is inviting the community to take part in two short-term foster programs designed to give dogs a much-needed break and help them shine for potential adopters. With Doggie Day Out, participants can treat a pup to a fun day of walks, beach time, naps, or even a special “pup stop” for a treat before returning them to the shelter. For those seeking a little more time, the Weekend Warrior program allows families to welcome a dog into their home for a short stay filled with snuggles, walks, and relaxation. Both programs provide valuable insight into each dog’s personality outside the shelter, helping staff make the perfect adoption match while giving participants the joy of making a difference. To learn more visit humane.org or call 941•474•7887 ext. 413.
