Happy summer season, Santa Cruz!

Thank you for connecting with Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation and exploring these pages of the Summer 2024 Activity Guide. The Guide is packed full with events, classes, programs, and opportunities to get involved in Santa Cruz this season. This summer, the Parks & Recreation team is embracing a theme, or perhaps a mindset, called “All In – Shaping Our Future.” This is an initiative aimed at modernizing and improving our operations and services throughout the City of Santa Cruz. All City departments such as the Police and Fire Departments, the Office of the City Manager, Finance, Economic Development, and many others are collaborating to improve how we deliver service to Santa Cruz. For Parks & Recreation, the spirit of this initiative truly starts with “all in.” A key priority for Parks & Recreation is accessibility and inclusion. This work is done in a multitude of ways from public spaces to programs and services. This summer, the Wharf and Beaches team will add a wooden access ramp and new MobiMats at Cowell Beach to improve wheelchair accessibility to the beach and ocean. The Civic Auditorium staff plan to implement a project to add handrailing to greatly improve safety and accessibility of the historic venue. The Recreation team is also growing

Parks & Recreation Commission

The Commission advises City Council on all matters concerning public recreation, including playgrounds, music, and entertainment. The Commission makes recommendations for the annual budget for the Parks and Recreation Department. They also assist in planning recreation programs and accepts donations of money and property subject to the approval of the City Council. Meetings are held on the second Monday of every other month starting in February at 4:00pm in City Council Chambers. Inquiries can be sent to: prcommission@santacruzca.gov

its partnerships with organizations including Shared Adventures to expand inclusive programming and ensure everyone has access to Parks & Rec programs. The second component of the City’s service optimization initiative is “shaping our future.” This season, Parks & Recreation will finalize the San Lorenzo Park redesign project, and with tremendous community input, will set a vision for the future of this beloved park. That vision will include ADA-accessible play features, environmental restoration, and opportunities for respite and recreation amidst a dynamic downtown environment. Parks & Rec, along with several City departments, will continue steps forward with the West Cliff 50-Year Vision and will initiate a West Cliff landscaping and design plan. We also expect to kickoff the Harvey West Park redesign project to set a vision and plan for the future of the park, ball fields, and pool. With all of these projects, there is no shaping the future unless we are all in, so we encourage you to join us in these exciting and important projects with Santa Cruz Parks & Rec! We are in this together!

Be sure to check out the Activity Guide for fun, learning, and engagement this season. There are many ways to get involved as volunteers through Parks & Recreation, Friends of Santa Cruz Parks & Rec, or with any one of our many community partners. Please reach out to us with your ideas and suggestions. We look forward to an “all in” summer!

Park News

Shaping our Future

It is an exciting time in Santa Cruz parks! Early this summer we plan on bringing a final proposed redesign of San Lorenzo Park to City Council for approval. Based on the extensive community input we have received, the proposed park will feature expanded natural areas along the San Lorenzo River, a new and larger playground, and event and recreation space in the upper park.

That’s just the beginning of our planning efforts. Later this year we will be kicking off the redesign of Harvey West Park. We’ll also be working to develop a set of design standards for West Cliff so all new improvements there keep a unified look and feel. Our goal is to make both of these beloved spaces more functional, more accessible and more beautiful.

Meanwhile, various projects started this year are coming toward conclusion; the renovated Main Beach restroom

will open this summer with colorful materials, a stronger structure and all new fixtures; Sergeant Derby Park’s playground renovation will soon be completed; new trash receptacles and benches will be installed along Pacific Avenue; pathway improvements in Tyrrell Park will also be finished.

We hope these improvements allow you to better enjoy your parks. We also invite you to help shape the future of the park system yourself. Public involvement is essential in our work. Look for upcoming meetings and surveys on our Parks & Recreation website or feel free to attend a Parks & Recreation Commission meeting and share your ideas. You can also write the Commission at prcommission@santacruzca.gov, or staff at parksandrec@santacruzca.gov. We look forward to hearing from you!
