HOPE & DREAMS

MR. ROGER CARTER, PRESIDENT

As you walk into San Miguel, you will see a poster on an easel that challenges our students to dream big and to write their dreams down for all to see. Many of the students focus on academic achievement that will allow them to attend a good high school. Some want to be professional soccer players, singers, doctors, lawyers, dentists, and other worthy professional occupations.

The ones that caught my attention were the hopes and dreams our students have for others. One student wanted everyone to have a good school year, a simple, but kind and genuine wish. Some students mentioned a hope to see distant family members. Another student wants a new puppy for their family to share.

It is a wonderful thing to have hopes and dreams no matter what your age or situation in life. To hold hopes and dreams for others is also a beautiful thing. After all, Jesus told us to "love one another as I have loved you." John 15:12

2023: BIG DREAMS

My hopes and dreams for 2023 are the hopes and dreams of my students, past, and present. Whatever they want to accomplish or attain is what I want for them. Every day they are at San Miguel is another day for each of them to discover something new about the world, something they are struggling with and how to deal with it, something about themselves. These small steps eventually lead to a student telling you that “I never dreamed I would ever go to college, much less discover what I wanted to do with my life until I came to San Miguel.”

I hope that all of our students feel the same way at some point in their lives. Middle school is tough - it is the ‘middle child’ of schooling. The students are too old to be treated like children, but not old or wise enough to be granted total trust and independence. I know this is why I love middle school: striking a balance between these two stages is a feat unlike any other in education. Challenges abound, and so does drama daily, but love and faith are at the heart of everything that happens here.

In my wildest dreams, I never thought this is where I would be at this point in my life. It is amazing what a lot of faith, hope, love, and support can do in someone’s life This is why San Miguel exists: for every student who comes through our school to experience these same gifts, to discover new dimensions in himself/herself so that hoping and dreaming become the norm in their lives and not just wishful thinking.

TRADITIONS: EPIPHANY

Celebrating traditions!

The visit of the Three Wise Men signifies a deeply rooted tradition among Hispanics: The popular Rosca de Reyes, a sort of a crown adorned with dried and caramelized fruit, whose colors are similar to the jewels of the socalled 'Kings', representing peace, love, and happiness.

Its interior hides a little doll representing Baby Jesus or Niño Jesús, which recalls the moment in which Joseph and Mary hid Jesus to save him from King Herod.

Every year, Pancho Anaya Bakery is expected to make thousands of Roscas, one of the most requested sweet items at that time of the year.

The tradition says that the person who finds the Baby Jesus should host a party with tamales on February 2, the date which commemorates the day of the Virgen de la Candelaria.

The Rosca will be sliced and then each person takes a piece. Nobody will know where the baby is, It's a surprise.

ESPERANZAS & SUEÑOS

Al entrar a San Miguel, verán un cartel que desafía a nuestros estudiantes a soñar en grande y escribir sus sueños para que todos los vean. Muchos de los estudiantes se enfocan en el logro académico que les permitirá asistir a una buena escuela secundaria. Algunos quieren ser futbolistas profesionales, cantantes, médicos, abogados, dentistas y otras ocupaciones profesionales.

Los que me llamaron la atención fueron las esperanzas y los sueños que nuestros estudiantes tienen para los demás. Un estudiante quería que todos tuvieran un buen año escolar, un deseo simple, pero amable y genuino. Algunos estudiantes mencionaron la esperanza de ver a familiares lejanos. Otro estudiante quiere un cachorro para compartir con su familia.

Es algo maravilloso tener esperanzas y sueños sin importar tu edad o situación en la vida. Tener esperanzas y sueños para los demás también es algo hermoso. Después de todo, Jesús nos dijo: "Amen los unos a los otros como yo los he amado". Juan 15:12

2023: SUEÑOS GRANDES

Mis esperanzas y sueños para el 2023 son las esperanzas y sueños de mis estudiantes, pasados y presentes. Lo que sea que quieran lograr o alcanzar es lo que quiero para ellos. Cada día que están en San Miguel es otro día para que cada uno de ellos descubra algo nuevo sobre el mundo, algo con lo que está luchando y cómo lidiar con eso, algo sobre sí mismo. Estos pequeños pasos eventualmente llevan a un estudiante a decirle que “nunca soñé que alguna vez iría a la universidad, mucho menos descubrir qué quería hacer con mi vida hasta que llegué a San Miguel”.

Espero que todos nuestros estudiantes sientan lo mismo en algún momento de sus vidas. La escuela secundaria es dura: Es el "niño del medio" de la educación. Los estudiantes son demasiado mayores para ser tratados como niños, pero no lo suficientemente mayores o sabios para que se les conceda total confianza e independencia. Sé que es por eso que amo la escuela intermedia: Lograr un equilibrio entre estas dos etapas es una hazaña como ninguna otra en la educación. Los desafíos abundan, al igual que el drama diario, pero el amor y la fe están en el corazón de todo lo que sucede aquí.

En mis sueños más atrevidos, nunca pensé que aquí es donde estaría en este momento de mi vida. Es asombroso lo que mucha fe, esperanza, amor y apoyo pueden hacer en la vida de alguien. Por eso existe San Miguel: Para que cada alumno que pasa por nuestro colegio experimente estos mismos dones, descubra nuevas dimensiones en sí mismo para que la esperanza y el soñar se conviertan en la norma de sus vidas y no solo en ilusiones

TRADICIONES: DÍA DE REYES

¡Celebrando las tradiciones!

La visita de los Reyes Magos significa una tradición muy arraigada entre los hispanos: La popular Rosca de Reyes, una especie de corona adornada con frutos secos y caramelizados, cuyos colores se asemejan a las joyas de los llamados Reyes, representando paz, amor y felicidad.

En su interior esconde un muñequito que representa al Niño Jesús, el cual recuerda el momento en que José y María escondieron a Jesús para salvarlo del rey Herodes.

Cada año, la Panadería Pancho Anaya, espera elaborar miles de Roscas, uno de los dulces más solicitados en esa época del año.

La tradición dice que la persona que encuentre al Niño Jesús debe hacer una fiesta con tamales el 2 de Febrero, fecha en la que se conmemora el día de la Virgen de la Candelaria. Se cortará la Rosca y luego cada persona tomará un trozo. Nadie sabrá dónde está el bebé, es una sorpresa.
