It is written, “Teachers have three loves; love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two together.”
I can think of no better message than what we strive to practice at San Miguel. You will notice love is the recurring theme of this quote.
Our teachers express love by getting to know their students, actively listening to them, asking students for feedback, and most importantly practicing another four-letter word they CARE.
Valentine’s Day makes the month of February the time of love.
My prayer for San Miguel is we practice love every month of the year.

LOVE OF EDUCATION, TEACHING, AND LEARNING

When I was growing up, I was one of those unusual kids who loved school and was frequently labeled “Teacher’s Pet.” I looked forward to the routine and the challenges each new school year brought with it; the positive encouragement I received from several of my teachers along the way helped to shape my sense of who I was at the time; and I love the validation I have experienced as an adult student that education is the heart of all that is possible.
I remember when I was in junior high, an assignment for a class was to write down ‘What I wanted to be or do when I grew up’ and then put the list in a safe place so I could review it when I became an adult (still working on that! ;)). On my list was photography - all I remember was that I wanted to learn how to take really good pictures; I also wanted to make flower arrangements, and I wanted to be a travel agent because it sounded really exciting to be able to travel all around the world. The reason I remember this is that I found the list when I was in my late 20s during a move out of state. There were several “Aha” moments upon this discovery - I had taken a photography class in college and although I wasn’t professional by any means, I learned about composition and lighting and settings on a camera so that I would be able to take decent pictures; I did get to work in a flower shop for about three years after college and learned floral designing and how to run a small business; and I did become a travel agent and had opportunities to visit places that were a part of my dreams.

Becoming a teacher was never on my radar. Again, it was a tiny decision here, an opportune moment there, and a nudge by the Holy Spirit that took me on that path. My Bachelor’s Degree was in Art History, so my way to becoming a teacher was different from most. After becoming certified, I decided to be taken seriously as an educator, and since my background was not in education, I had to go back to school. So I earned my MEd in Curriculum and Instruction. Same thing with becoming a principalsometimes you do things based on instinct and faith and nothing else, which led to two more Master’s degrees.
None of these activities or occupations are instinctual; they have been learned. Some have been easier than others; some have come with a financial strain; some have arisen out of a burning desire to make a difference; all of them worth every single moment of effort and experience.
Somewhere along the way, my idea of the perfect job for me was to be a perpetual student and get paid for it. In many ways, that’s what I have: every day I have the privilege of being with seventy-two ‘teachers’ - middleschoolers from whom I learn something new each day; I also get to observe them as they go through their day as students and a concept clicks for them that didn’t the day before or they experience a moment of kindness from one of their peers and they smile; I witness the passion for education each day as I visit the classrooms of my colleagues as creativity and continuous modeling of high expectations take place; and I learn that there is still so much yet for me to learn.
Teachers are often said to be “sowers of seeds”, especially in middle school. It is a difficult task to be a teacher, peacemaker, and counselor all at the same time with the hope that something will stick. It is not until many years later that we get to see the ‘fruits of our labor’ either in a visit from a student or on social media. I am okay with that. The process of becoming lifelong learners, educators, and teachers has to start somewhere with someone. Why not with us? I’m all in.

We are getting ready to celebrate our 20th Anniversary in 2024, and we have partnered with Third Floor Design of The University of Tulsa. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement soon!

Mr. Marty Hudson, a professional barber, met with our students. They had a great time learning.
It's time to launch our running club and soccer, so, Dr. Martínez of ChiroConcepts provided the physical tests to our athletes.
Our High School enrollment night was a success! Special thanks to the extraordinary Alumni Stars, María Salas, and Jazyn Sánchez for their support.

EL AMOR POR LA EDUCACIÓN

Está escrito, “Los maestros tienen tres amores; el amor por el aprendizaje, el amor por los aprendices y el amor por unir a los dos primeros”.
No se me ocurre mejor mensaje que el que nos esforzamos por practicar en San Miguel. Notarás que el amor es el tema recurrente de ésta frase.
Nuestros maestros expresan amor conociendo a sus estudiantes, escuchándolos activamente, pidiéndoles comentarios y, lo que es más importante, practicando otra palabra: CUIDAR.
El Día de San Valentín hace del mes de Febrero la época del amor.
Mi oración por San Miguel es que practiquemos el amor todos los meses del año.

EL AMOR POR LA EDUCACIÓN, LA ENSEÑANZA Y EL APRENDIZAJE

Cuando era niña, era uno de esas niñas inusuales a los que les encantaba la escuela y con frecuencia me etiquetaban como “la preferida del maestro”. Esperaba con ansias la rutina y los desafíos que traía consigo cada nuevo año escolar; el aliento positivo que recibí de varios de mis maestros a lo largo del camino ayudó a dar forma a mi sentido de quién era yo en ese momento; y me encanta la validación que he experimentado como estudiante adulta de que la educación es el corazón de todo lo que es posible.
Recuerdo que cuando estaba en la secundaria, una tarea para una clase era escribir 'Lo que quería ser o hacer cuando fuera grande' y luego poner la lista en un lugar seguro para poder revisarla cuando fuera adulta, (¡todavía estoy trabajando en eso! ;)). En mi lista estaba la fotografía; todo lo que recuerdo es que quería aprender a tomar fotografías realmente buenas; También quería hacer arreglos florales y quería ser agente de viajes porque sonaba muy emocionante poder viajar por todo el mundo. La razón por la que recuerdo ésto es que encontré la lista cuando tenía poco más de 20 años durante una mudanza fuera del estado. Hubo varios momentos después de este descubrimiento: Había tomado una clase de fotografía en la universidad y, aunque no era profesional de ninguna manera, aprendí sobre composición, iluminación y configuración en una cámara para poder tomar fotos decentes. Trabajé en una floristería durante unos tres años después de la universidad y aprendí diseño floral y cómo administrar una pequeña empresa; y me convertí en agente de viajes y tuve la oportunidad de visitar lugares que eran parte de mis sueños.

Convertirse en maestra nunca estuvo en mi radar. Una vez más, fue una pequeña decisión aquí, un momento oportuno allá y un empujón del Espíritu Santo que me llevó por ese camino. Mi licenciatura fue en Historia del Arte, por lo que mi forma de convertirme en maestra fue diferente a la de la mayoría.
Después de obtener la certificación, decidí que me tomaran en serio como educadora y, como mi experiencia no era educativa, tuve que volver a la escuela. Así que obtuve mi especialidad en Currículo e Instrucción. Lo mismo con convertirse en directora: A veces haces cosas basadas en el instinto y la fe y nada más, lo cual me llevó a obtener dos maestrías más.
Ninguna de estas actividades u ocupaciones son instintivas; han sido aprendidas. Algunos han sido más fáciles que otros; algunos han venido con problemas financieros; algunos han surgido de un ardiente deseo de marcar la diferencia; todos ellos valen cada momento de esfuerzo y experiencia.
En algún momento del camino, mi idea del trabajo perfecto para mí era ser un estudiante perpetuo y que me pagaran por ello. En muchos sentidos, eso es lo que tengo: todos los días tengo el privilegio de estar con setenta y dos 'maestros', estudiantes de escuela media de quienes aprendo algo nuevo cada día; También los observo a medida que avanzan en su día como estudiantes y les hace sentido un concepto que no sucedió el día anterior o experimentan un momento de amabilidad de uno de sus compañeros y sonríen. Soy testigo de la pasión por la educación todos los días cuando visito las aulas de mis colegas mientras se lleva a cabo la creatividad y el modelado contínuo de altas expectativas; y aprendo que todavía me queda mucho por aprender
A menudo se dice que los maestros son “sembradores de semillas”, especialmente en la escuela media. Es una tarea difícil ser maestro, pacificador y consejero, todo al mismo tiempo con la esperanza de que algo se mantenga No es hasta muchos años después que podemos ver los "frutos de nuestro trabajo", ya sea en una visita de un estudiante o en las redes sociales Estoy bien con eso
El proceso de convertirse en aprendices, educadores y maestros de por vida tiene que comenzar en alguna parte con alguien. ¿Por qué no con nosotros? ¡Vamos!

San Miguel es más que una escuela, es una comunidad donde hay una cultura extraordinaria para todos.
Nuestros estudiantes aprenden a confiar y ayudarse los unos a los otros, y a creer en sí mismos.
Se van de San Miguel sabiendo que pueden hacer una diferencia en sus propias vidas y en las vidas de los demás.
Nuestra escuela está inspirada en los pilares de la fe, el servicio y la comunidad; ¡se alienta a cada estudiante a aprender, a servir y a crecer para poner en práctica todo su potencial!
Este epicentro de esperanza, ubicado en el corazón de Kendall Whittier, es un testimonio de cómo un grupo de niños puede prosperar en un entorno afectuoso y enriquecedor donde las personas creen en ellos, sienten que pertenecen y donde pueden contribuir.

Dimos inicio al Programa Vida Saludable para las Familias de San Miguel. Esta emocionante iniciativa está impulsada por nuestros amigos de Uma Tulsa y la Universidad Estatal de Oklahoma. Nos estamos preparando para celebrar nuestro vigésimo aniversario en el 2024 y nos hemos aliado con Third Floor Design de la Universidad de Tulsa.
El Sr. Marty Hudson, barbero profesional, se reunió con nuestros estudiantes. Se lo pasaron genial aprendiendo. Es momento de lanzar nuestro club de atletismo y fútbol, por eso, el Dr. Martínez de ChiroConcepts brindó las pruebas físicas a nuestros atletas.
Nuestra noche de inscripción para la escuela secundaria fue un éxito. Un agradecimiento especial a las extraordinarias graduadas, María Salas y Jazyn Sánchez por su apoyo.
Nunca es demasiado temprani para empezar a pensar en la universidad. Nuestros amigos del equipo de TCC se reunieron con nuestros graduados para hablar sobre las opciones de becas.
