US Judge Upholds Trump's $100K H-1B Visa Fee Amid Immigration Crackdown

New Epstein Files Reveal Child-Themed Art, Odd Decor

The $100,000 application fee announced in September gave companies just 36 hours notice before it went into effect, triggering chaos and confusion over how it would work and who would be hit. HiIndia Newsdesk

A US federal judge on Tuesday upheld President Donald Trump's $100,000 fee to process H-1B visa applications, acknowledging it could "inflict significant harm on American businesses and institutions of higher education." In a 56-page opinion, US District Judge Beryl Howell wrote that the president has "broad statutory authority" to address "a problem he perceives to be a matter of economic and national security." The $100,000 application fee announced in September gave companies just 36 hours notice before it went into effect,

triggering chaos and confusion over how it would work and who would be hit. The H-1B fee is part of a larger immigration crackdown by Trump, who has unleashed a massive push against migrants since returning to the White House -- though until now it had not targeted the visa on which Silicon Valley

relies heavily. Trump argued that the H-1B visa system was being abused to replace American workers with people willing to work for less money. The United States awards 85,000 H-1B visas per year on a lottery system. India accounts for around three-quarters of the recipients.

"People Are Angry": Trump Says Epstein Files Are 'Ruining Reputations'

HiIndia Newsdesk

The US Supreme Court has rejected the Trump administration's bid to deploy National Guard troops in the Chicago area, over the objections of local and state officials. In an unsigned order, the top court said the president's ability to federalise the National Guard likely only applies in "exceptional" circumstances. The National Guard consists of primarily state-based troops that typically respond to major issues like natural disasters or large protests. The ruling marks a rare departure for the conservative-majority court which has largely sided with the Trump administration in recent months. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called it "a big win for Illinois and American democracy". The White House has not issued an immediate response to the ruling. The Chicago deployment is part of a series of efforts by the Trump administration to subdue protests against federal immigration raids in primarily Democrat-led cities, including New Orleans, Portland and Washington DC. Trump argues that his use of troops is necessary to quell violence in Democratic-controlled cities, crack down on crime and support his deportation initiatives.

New Delhi: The US Department of Justice has released new documents and photographs from the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's townhouse. The files featured images of disturbing child-themed artwork, role-play costumes, and questionable decor in his Upper East Side home. One of the shocking photos, which was on display in his home, was of a little boy peering down his

"People that really had nothing to do with Epstein, but they're in a picture with him because he was in a party, and you ruin a reputation of somebody," Trump said Monday at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. "So a lot of people are very angry that this continues."

P

resident Donald Trump said he believed "people are very angry that pictures are being released" that connect them to notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, days after the Justice Department released a new tranche of files tied to the late financier. "People that really had nothing to do with Epstein, but they're in a picture with him because he was in a party, and you ruin a reputation of somebody," Trump said Monday at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. "So a lot of people are very angry that this continues."

Trump said he hated to see former President Bill Clinton, who appeared frequently in the release, being tarnished by the association, describing the situation as "terrible." "But this is what the Democrats - mostly Democrats, and a couple of bad Republicans - are asking for," Trump continued. "So they give you their photos of me too. Everybody was friendly with this guy, either friendly or not friendly, but he was around." The Epstein files, and the fight over their disclosure, have sparked infighting among Trump's supporters, adding to the political headwinds that the president is facing heading into next year's midterm elections. The Justice Department last Friday disclosed thousands of pages of photographs, phone records and notes from the federal investigations of Epstein. But much of the release was heavily redacted, and it did not contain the entire scope of documents in the government's possession. That triggered accusations from lawmakers in both parties that Trump's administration failed to adhere to a bipartisan law that required the full release of the files.

own pants. The walls were also lined with framed photographs of children, including the specific image of a young girl perched on Epstein's shoulders. Other frameworks featured images of children in compromising positions, according to The NY Post. Photos taken inside Epstein's seven-story, 21,000-square-foot Manhattan home also show a creepy sculpture of a bride clinging to a rope in the entryway and creepy taxidermy animals, including a dog and tiger, scattered throughout the house. The DOJ also released a file, including emails or notes, stating that US President Donald Trump travelled on Epstein's private jet "many more times than previously reported." The FBI case file EFTA00020518, one of the newly released documents from the FBI, dated October 2020, contains allegations related to Trump. Names and other identifying information have been blacked out, so the sources of the allegations and people involved are not publicly visible, according to CNN. The document includes a report from a limo driver, whose name is also redacted. The driver described a "very concerning" phone call involving Trump in 1995 while he was driving him to an airport. During the call, Trump reportedly said the name "Jeffrey" multiple times and made references to "abusing some girl."

NRIs Reluctant to Return to India Despite Rs.5–6 Crore Savings

PM Modi Hails LVM3 Launch as Major Space Milestone HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

Peace of life, better systems and dignity at work matter more than money, say overseas Indians A candid admission by non-resident Indians (NRIs) living in developed countries has sparked fresh debate on social media: even after accumulating savings of Rs.5–6 crore, many have no desire to return to India permanently. The discussion gained traction after a social media influencer shared a conversation with a friend settled in Canada, who openly admitted that despite financial security, returning to India no longer feels appealing. The post struck a chord online, as many NRIs echoed similar sentiments, arguing that while money is important, quality of life and mental peace matter far more. According to several overseas Indians, their reluctance to return is not rooted in hatred for their homeland but in the contrast between daily life abroad and in India. Many pointed to better work culture, transparent systems, respect at the workplace, lower corruption and stronger institutional support in countries such as Canada, the US, Australia and parts of Europe. NRIs also highlighted everyday challenges in India — traffic congestion, pollution, bureaucratic delays and constant stress — which, they say, drain energy and reduce overall well-being. “In developed countries, rules are clear, overtime is paid, and dignity at work is respected,” one NRI said, adding that these factors outweigh even substantial financial savings. Several viral videos and posts reinforce the argument. One Indian living in Canada stated that even after saving crores, people avoid returning because income opportunities and financial stability are far stronger abroad. Others cited benefits such as free or subsidised healthcare, government-supported education, child benefits and social security systems that provide a safety net during difficult times. The sentiment is not limited to one country. A software engineer originally from Chennai, now living in Australia, recently posted on Reddit advising young Indians to seriously consider opportunities abroad, calling claims that life overseas is “miserable” misleading. Similarly, a 45-year-old IT professional who returned to Bengaluru after spending nearly two decades in the US said he regretted his decision and is now planning to move to Germany despite a lower salary.

ISRO's LVM3 rocket places the 6.5 tonne Bluebird Block 2 satellite of US-based form AST Space Mobile into a 520 km circular orbit. New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated ISRO for placing the heaviest satellite in orbit from India using the LVM3 rocket and strengthening the foundation for future missions such as the Gaganyaan. The prime minister also said that the success of the heavy-lift LVM3 rocket also reinforced India's growing role in the global commercial launch market. capability and reinforces our growing role in the global commercial launch market," the prime minister said. PM Modi said the LVM3 launch was also reflective of efforts towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat and congratulated hardworking space scientists and engineers.

Gadkari Flags Delhi’s Toxic Air, Says It Makes Him Sick

Mumbai: The estranged Thackeray cousins have reunited. They will fight the upcoming local body elections in Mumbai together. The decision has been made public by cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, formally declaring an alliance that will redraw the power map of the financial capital, with Marathi identity making a grand comeback in the regional politics. "I officially declare that Shiv Sena and MNS are alliance partners (for the January 15 election)," Raj Thackeray, who heads the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), announced at a joint press

conference this morning. "Mumbai will get a Marathi mayor," he thundered, assuring that that person will be from the Shiv Sena-MNS alliance. Uddhav, seated next to him, also sounded confident: "Mumbai will stay with us, come what may." The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief sealed the alliance with the "batenge toh katenge" slogan by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, warning that any split and lack of unity would be catastrophic. Marathi identity politics was championed by Bal Thackeray, Raj's uncle and Uddhav's father, and has emerged as a defining factor in the state politics from time to time.

New Delhi: Delhi's toxic air has drawn strong remarks from within the ruling BJP, with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari saying that two days in the national capital gives him an infection. Addressing a gathering at the launch of veteran journalist Uday Mahurkar's book, 'My Idea of Nation First: Redefining Unalloyed Nationalism', Gadkari said the biggest form of nationalism today will be to increase the country's exports and decrease its imports. I stay (in Delhi) barely for two days, and an infection follows. Why is Delhi reeling under pollution?"

countries. Tensions escalated as Hadi’s supporters alleged that a suspect linked to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League had fled to India — a claim Bangladeshi police said remains unverified. Anti-India sentiment surged, leading to attacks on Indian diplomatic buildings in Bangladesh and counter-protests in India. Both nations suspended visa services in several cities and summoned each other’s diplomats over security concerns. Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, condemned the killing and said those responsible would face justice. Police have arrested 12 suspects. However, analysts warn that rising religious extremism and mob violence have increased insecurity for minorities and civil society since Hasina’s removal from power. Experts caution that political rhetoric and street anger on both sides risk further destabilising relations. With elections scheduled for February, observers say restoring order and rebuilding trust will be critical to preventing a deeper diplomatic crisis.

Australia to deport British man charged with displaying Nazi symbols

Mexican lawmakers have approved a package of new tariffs, impacting hundreds of products, many of which come from China. The measures, which President Claudia Sheinbaum has said are needed to boost domestic production, were passed by the Mexican Senate on Wednesday. The levies are set to take effect on 1 January 2026 and will apply to goods like metals, cars, clothing and appliances. Dozens of countries that do not have a free trade agreement with Mexico will be affected, including Thailand, India and Indonesia. The move comes as Mexico is in negotiations with the US over steep import taxes that President Donald Trump has threatened to impose on the country. The measures will impose tariffs of up to 50% on more than 1,400 products. The levies will "substantially harm the interests of trading partners, including China," said a spokesperson for Beijing's commerce ministry on Thursday.

A British national in Australia has had his visa cancelled and faces deportation for allegedly displaying Nazi symbols. The 43-year-old man living in Queensland was arrested and charged earlier this month, after allegedly using a social media account to post the Nazi swastika, promote pro-Nazi ideology and call for violence towards the Jewish community. The man was taken into immigration detention this week in Brisbane and is due to face court in January. Police have been cracking down on the use of prohibited symbols amid a recent rise in antisemitism and right-wing extremism. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said: "He came here to hate - he doesn't get to stay." "If you come to Australia on a visa, you are here as a guest," Burke told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Wednesday.

The UK sanctioned oil trading tycoon Murtaza Lakhani, part of a new package targeting Russia over its war against Ukraine. Lakhani, a prominent Pakistani businessman who long used London as a base, was added to the country's sanctions list for his alleged role in the Russian energy sector, the UK said. The British sanctions also designated a cadre of companies, including Lakhani's Mercantile & Maritime Group. The moves come days after a new sanctions package by the European Union, which also hit the Pakistani trader as well as an influential Azeri rival. In a written statement, Lakhani denied the allegations that he owns or controls any shadow fleet of vessels trading Russian petroleum products in

breach of any applicable sanctions law. He said he's immediately pursuing all avenues of legal remedy and redress to defend, refute and appeal the EU and UK designations. The latest sanctions from London and Brussels land as Washington prepares its own fresh round of designations targeting Russia's energy sector, part of a strategy to ratchet up the pressure on Moscow should President Vladimir Putin reject a peace agreement with Ukraine. The Trump administration is considering options, such as targeting vessels in Russia's so-called shadow fleet of tankers as well as traders who facilitate the transactions, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday.

According to the contours of the FTA announced on Monday, some of the items will see duty elimination immediately while for others, the reduction is going to be staggered over a period. For instance, sheep meat (lamb) will get immediate duty relief, but for seafood items such as salmon and mussels, the duty-free status will be reached in seven years. For wine, tariffs will be reduced from 150 per cent at present to 25-50 per cent (depending on the value of the wine) over 10 years. Tariffs on Manuka honey will be cut from 66 per cent to 16.5 per cent over five years. The US State Department said it would deny visas to five people, including a former EU commissioner, for seeking to "coerce" American social media platforms into suppressing viewpoints they oppose. "These radical activists and weaponized NGOs have advanced censorship crackdowns by foreign states - in each case targeting American speakers and American companies," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. Thierry Breton, the former top tech regulator at the European Commission, suggested that a "witch hunt" was taking place. Breton was described by the State Department as the "mastermind" of the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), which

imposes content moderation on social media firms. However, it has angered some US conservatives who see it as seeking to censor right-wing opinions. Brussels denies this. Breton has clashed with Elon Musk, the world's richest man and owner of X, over obligations to follow EU rules. The European Commission recently fined X €120m (£105m) over its blue tick badges - the first fine under the DSA. It said the platform's blue tick system was "deceptive" because the firm was not "meaningfully verifying users". In response, Musk's site blocked the Commission from making adverts on its platform.

The US economy picked up speed over the three months to September, as consumer spending jumped and exports increased. The world's largest economy expanded at an annual rate of 4.3%, up from 3.8% in the previous quarter. That was better than expected, and marked the strongest growth in two years. The report, which had been delayed by the US government shutdown, sheds light on an economy that has been buffeted by dramatic changes to trade and immigration policies, as well as persistent inflation and cuts to government spending. But while that has led to sharp swings in some areas, such as imports and exports,

the underlying economy has maintained solid momentum, outperforming many forecasts. "This is an economy that has defied doom and gloom expectations basically since the beginning of 2022", said Aditya Bhave, senior economist at Bank of America. Speaking to the BBC's Business Today programme, Mr Bhave described the economy as "very very resilient". "I don't see why that wouldn't continue going forward," he added. The overall growth figure for the third quarter of the year was much stronger than expected, with most analysts expecting an annual pace of about 3.2%.

H-1B Visa Holders Stranded in India

Trump Order Fake Citizens to Be Deported

Targets Those Who Lied or Hid Information During Citizenship Process

The US State Department, in an email, reportedly informed the Indian workers that their interviews were delayed due to the new social media vetting policy. Hundreds of H-1B visa holders who returned to India this month to renew work permits have been stranded after their consular appointments, scheduled between December 15 and 26, were postponed to March 2026 due to the US State Department’s new social media vetting policy. This policy aims to ensure applicants do not pose a threat to US national security or public safety. The sudden rescheduling has affected workers’ plans and employers, with many tech giants, including Google and Apple, warning employees against international travel amid potential delays of up to 12 months. The US Embassy in India clarified that applicants arriving on their original dates will be denied entry. India accounts for 71% of H-1B holders. The policy, extending social media scrutiny to H-1B and H-4 visa applicants, comes after similar checks on students and exchange visitors. Workers and attorneys have expressed concern over the uncertainty and extended delays impacting employment and personal plans.

The Trump administration has initiated plans to target individuals who obtained U.S. citizenship through fraudulent means, including fake marriages, sham adoptions, or providing false information during the naturalization process. While the U.S. government has been aware of such cases, actions against naturalized citizens have historically been rare. Now, the administration aims to use denaturalization as a tool to intimidate immigrants and curb abuse of permanent residency and citizenship pathways. According to reports, U.S. authorities have directed field offices to submit 100–200 cases monthly involving suspected citizenship fraud. The Department of Justice will focus not only on fraud but also on criminal activity, financial misconduct, and violent offenses committed by naturalized citizens. Between 2017 and 2025,

Trump Supporters Target Indians for Deportation HiIndia Newsdesk

Despite this, many Americans— particularly Trump supporters— continue to make statements against Indians. only 120 denaturalization cases were filed, but the Trump administration plans to dramatically increase this number. Experts warn that the process is complex, as revoking citizenship requires proving that applicants lied or concealed information that affected their eligibility. While technically possible, deporting denaturalized citizens can be challenging, especially if their country of origin no longer recognizes them as citizens. Since taking office, Trump has tightened immigration rules, closed loopholes, and implemented travel bans, arguing these measures enhance national security and protect U.S. values. This new denaturalization initiative signals a more aggressive approach toward immigrants who allegedly abused the naturalization process

India-New Zealand FTA: Zero Duties on Work Visas HiIndia Newsdesk

India has finalized a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand, its 18th trade pact, set to be signed within three months and implemented next year. The deal offers zero-duty access on all Indian exports and tariff liberalisation on 70% of New Zealand’s lines, covering 95% of bilateral trade, benefiting sectors like textiles, leather, marine products, gems, engineering goods, and automobiles. It includes 5,000 Temporary Employment Entry visas and 1,000 Work and Holiday visas, USD 20 billion New Zealand investment over 15 years, agricultural partnerships, duty-free manufacturing inputs, and cooperation in AYUSH, fisheries, tourism, and horticulture, with regulatory measures to reduce nontariff barriers.

Trump Suspends Visa Diversity Program, Green Card Lottery Canceled HiIndia Newsdesk

The United States, long known for welcoming immigrants, is tightening its immigration policies under the Trump administration. Federal agents are increasingly targeting undocumented individuals, conducting ID checks in public, and detaining those without legal status. In a major move, Trump has indefinitely suspended the Diversity Visa (Green Card Lottery) program, which annually allowed 55,000 individuals from underrepresented countries to obtain visas. The suspension follows recent shootings, including at Brown University, where the perpetrator had entered the U.S. through this program. The Diversity Visa lottery excluded countries with large immigrant populations like India, China, and Mexico, while allocating quotas to smaller nations. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated the step is aimed at national security. Experts note this aligns with Trump’s broader agenda of restricting both illegal and legal immigration, including high-skilled workers, under the justification of public safety, despite limited data linking immigrants to increased crime.

Fasting Fever Is Intermittent Fasting the Ultimate Diet Craze?

Intermittent fasting has taken the health world by storm, promising weight loss, better metabolism, and even longer life — all without counting calories. From celebrities to office-goers, millions are skipping meals in the hope of resetting their bodies. But is fasting truly a miracle solution, or just another fitness fad dressed in science? New studies in 2025 are offering fresh insights into how timed eating affects fat loss, blood sugar, and overall health. While some swear by its benefits, doctors warn that fasting done wrong can backfire. As interest grows, experts urge people to understand both the rewards and the risks. Here’s a closer look at what intermittent fasting really does to your body. HiIndia Newsdesk

Eat, Fast, Repeat — What’s the Latest Buzz? Intermittent fasting (IF) — where you alternate between eating and fasting periods — continues dominating wellness trends in 2025. It’s not a diet with a specific menu, but a schedule that tells your body when to eat. Common patterns include daily time-restricted eating (like 16 hours fasting, 8 hours eating), alternate-day fasting, and occasional longer fasts. Experts say IF can help with weight loss by forcing the body to burn stored fat once it runs out of quick energy from meals. People who eat their last meal earlier in the day — say before 5 p.m. — may see better blood sugar control and reduced belly fat, a new study suggests.

Health Wins and Warnings: What Scientists Say Latest research shows IF can offer similar weight loss results to traditional dieting, and may even improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Some small

trials also hint that fasting combined with balanced protein intake can boost gut health and beneficial microbes. But it’s not all sunshine — doctors caution that extremely short eating windows (like eating only within 8 hours) might carry heart health risks, especially over long periods. Plus, fasting isn’t for everyone: people with certain medical conditions, eating disorders, or specific nutritional needs should consult a doctor first.

Quick Facts & Tips for Beginners Popular IF plans: 16:8 daily schedule, 5:2 weekly fasting, alternate-day fasting. Potential perks: weight loss, better insulin sensitivity, lower blood pressure. Be cautious: dizziness, fatigue, or mood swings can happen; results vary by individual. Best advice: Pair IF with nutrient-rich foods and stay hydrated for a safer, more sustainable experience. Whether you’re trying it for weight loss, better

metabolism, or just joining the latest health wave, intermittent fasting remains a hot topic — but one that’s worth exploring with care.

What Works — and What Doesn’t — for Real People Health experts now stress that intermittent fasting is not one-size-fits-all. While some people report sharper focus, better digestion, and steady weight loss, others experience headaches, irritability, fatigue, or binge-eating during eating windows. Nutritionists recommend: • Eating protein-rich, fiber-dense meals • Avoiding junk food “reward eating” • Drinking plenty of water, electrolytes, or herbal teas during fasts • Starting slow — 12:12 or 14:10 — before attempting longer fasts Fitness trainers also warn that fasting combined with intense workouts may require adjustments to prevent muscle loss.

The Jeffrey Epstein Scandal That Shocked the World HiIndia Newsdesk

Who Was Jeffrey Epstein — From Teacher to Infamous Financier? Jeffrey Epstein was an American financier whose life journey took him from an unremarkable early career to becoming one of the most controversial figures of the 21st century. Born in Brooklyn in 1953, Epstein began his adult life teaching mathematics at an elite New York prep school before shifting into finance in the early 1980s. He worked briefly on Wall Street and then started his own financial advisory firm, J. Epstein & Company, claiming that he managed the assets of billionaires and other ultra-wealthy clients. Despite lacking formal qualifications in finance, Epstein amassed enormous wealth — estimated at over $500 million by the time of his death — and owned luxurious properties around the globe, from a Manhattan mansion to a ranch in New Mexico and two private Caribbean islands. But behind his polished exterior, Epstein had cultivated a dark

network of influence, luxury, and secrecy that would ultimately unravel his life.

vast fortune remained unclear — fueling rumors that his wealth was connected to darker activities.

How Epstein Built a Fortune — And Why It Raised Eyebrows

The Crimes — Why Epstein Was Arrested

Epstein’s financial rise was shrouded in mystery and speculation. He attracted a handful of extremely wealthy clients — most notably Victoria’s Secret founder Les Wexner and private-equity mogul Leon Black — through a niche wealth-management business based in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Epstein’s firm offered tax and estate planning, investment advice, and financial services to the ultra-rich, and these relationships reportedly accounted for most of his income. Epstein also benefited from huge tax breaks available in the Virgin Islands, significantly boosting his net worth while paying relatively little in taxes over decades. His financial dealings were so opaque that even after years of scrutiny, the exact sources of his

The Death : Official Story and Its Shocking Aftermath

On August 10, 2019, while in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan awaiting trial, Epstein was found unresponsive in his jail cell. Authorities later declared that he had died by suicide by hanging. However, the circumstances of his death were riddled with irregularities: • Epstein had been taken off suicide watch shortly before his death. • Surveillance cameras near his cell were not functioning properly, and footage that could prove what happened was incomplete or unavailable. • Guards assigned to monitor him reportedly failed to check on him consistently, contributing to questions about what really happened Officially, the U.S. medical examiner ruled Epstein’s death a suicide, and the U.S. Department of Justice has maintained that there is no credible evidence of foul play. Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr reiterated in 2025 that it was “undoubtedly suicide” after reviewing evidence, dismissing conspiracy claims.

Controversies, Conspiracy Theories & Public Suspicion Despite the official findings, controversy still swirls around Epstein’s death — and the case remains a fertile ground for conspiracy theories. Many questions persist because of the missing or malfunctioning surveillance footage, the sudden removal of Epstein’s suicide watch, and his connections to powerful figures worldwide. Some people and commentators have suggested Epstein may have been killed to prevent testimony or disclosure of damaging information — though no verified evidence supports these theories. In December 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice briefly released a fake video purporting to show Epstein’s suicide before quickly removing it — an incident that underscored how sensitive and mistrust-prone the case remains. Additionally, thousands of previously sealed documents have been released under new transparency laws, but they have so far yielded no conclusive proof of wrongdoing by others or evidence of a “secret client list.”

Epstein’s criminal history was long and controversial. In 2008, he struck a widely criticized plea deal in Florida that allowed him to avoid serious federal charges related to sex with minors, serving just over a year in jail with work release privileges. This deal sparked outrage for its leniency and secrecy. A decade later, in July 2019, Epstein was arrested again — this time in New York — on federal charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy involving dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14. Prosecutors alleged that Epstein had created a network in which girls were recruited to provide sexual services and that this abuse occurred over many years. Epstein pleaded not guilty and was denied bail, pending what many expected would be a highprofile federal trial.

Congressional Candidate Neil Khot’s Vision for Illinois’ 8th District I came to America with $300 and built a successful business here, employing over 200 people. I want to restore that pathway to success and deliver commonsense, resultsdriven leadership to a district that needs economic revitalization.

N

eil Khot, a first-generation Indian American and self-made entrepreneur, is turning his story of perseverance and success into a campaign for Congress in Illinois’ 8th District. Arriving in the U.S. in 1997 with just $300 and big dreams, Khot built a thriving business that created jobs for over 200 people, embodying the American Dream he now hopes to make accessible for all. In an exclusive interview with Hi India, Khot shares how his journey as an immigrant, job creator, and community member shapes his campaign priorities that cover everything from women’s rights and immigration reform to economic opportunity and healthcare. He also talks about and why he believes trust, transparency, and community-driven leadership are essential to restoring hope for working families across the district.

What is the fundamental motivation behind your decision to run for Congress in Illinois’ 8th District?

I’m running because I believe in the American Dream, and I see it slipping out of reach for many young Americans. I’m a community-rooted leader. I came to America with $300 and built a successful business here, employing over 200 people. I want to restore that pathway to success and deliver common-sense, results-driven leadership to a district that needs economic revitalization.

With eight Democratic candidates currently in the race, how do you distinguish yourself from your opponents? All the candidates are good people, but I bring the real lived experience of the immigrant story and the business acumen needed to get results. I understand what opportunity truly means. I am a job creator, not a career politician, and I am constantly fighting against the MAGA extremism that is dividing the country.

What are the key priorities at the heart of your campaign, and why are they important to you and the constituents of the 8th district?

A. My top priority is bringing back well paying-jobs

Zofeen Maqsood

to the 8th district and increasing opportunities for all Americans. While our economy continues to grow, that growth is concentrated in a select few areas and amongst the very richest in our society. I will vote to increase investments in education and infrastructure to ensure that we have more well paying jobs available for all Americans. B. Healthcare affordability is another top priority of my campaign. To reduce the cost of healthcare in America, I believe in a greater focus for prevention programs, expanding residency slots, and reducing drug prices by cutting out Middlemen. C. A fair and secure immigration system is a part of the American identity and critical to maintaining our nation’s economic strength. The system that I came under has gotten significantly slower over the preceding decades. It is unacceptable to leave families that go through the immigration process in limbo for decades. Our own district has immigrant communities from all over the world, I will seek efficiencies wherever possible to benefit all constituents.

Your campaign has reported impressive fundraising. Can you share the details of your financial strength and team?

We are proud to be the prominent frontrunner in the primary, reflecting our grassroots enthusiasm. We have raised a total of $750,000. We’ve seen significant support, especially from the Hindu American community. Our team is robust, featuring 10 core staff members and 25+ volunteers, drawing on nationally recognized strategists like Bill Hyers, known for his work with Senator Tammy Duckworth.

Can you mention any public endorsements or key supporters of your campaign?

We are honored to have the support of Congressman Shri Thanedar (Michigan), Mayor Tom Dailly (Schaumburg, IL), and Alderman David Moore (Chicago, IL), among others, including Americans 4 Hindus and Actress Taylor Treadwell. We are currently in discussions with additional

national and local leaders

What are your three areas of focus for improving healthcare? We need to focus on prioritizing preventive care, removing the caps on medical residencies to address shortages, and lowering drug prices by allowing direct manufacturer purchases.

Your plan for job creation depends on attracting new commerce. What regional advantages will you leverage?

The 8th District is a logistical powerhouse. I will leverage our major highways, extensive rail connections, and our critical proximity to O’Hare International Airport to make us irresistible to national and international companies.

Climate change and energy consumption are a top priority for our future generations. How will you ensure our investments in the climate will be sustainable? I support investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and a commitment to clean energy, including solar, wind, and nuclear energy. At the local level, I will push for conservation and the expansion of rooftop solar usage.

What is your commitment to seniors, families, and voting rights? I am committed to protecting Social Security and Medicare and supporting universal pre-K to strengthen early education and reduce childcare burdens. Regarding voting, "Voting is a right and a duty," so I support accessible options, including mail-in ballots, while preserving election integrity.

People want the ability to reach their Congressman. How will you be accessible and transparent to your diverse community of constituents in Illinois’ 8th district? We use active social media outreach and are dedicated to door-to-door canvassing to ensure we connect with as many constituents as possible as we lead up to election day. If elected, I pledge to have open-door policies in both the district and D.C. offices, and I will host monthly virtual town halls to ensure consistent communication.

A Gujarati man living in the United States has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison after being convicted for drunk driving for the third time in the state of Texas. The accused, identified as Ankur Patel, was found guilty under DUI (Driving Under the Influence) charges and was convicted by a jury within minutes of the trial proceedings. Under Texas law, a third DUI offence is treated not as a misdemeanour but as a thirddegree felony. Upon conviction, the accused can face two to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Patel had earlier been arrested twice on similar charges and was released on probation in those cases.

Indian H-1B visa holders are facing severe uncertainty after the United States abruptly cancelled hundreds of visa interview appointments and rescheduled them as late as October 2026, according to multiple reports. Many applicants who had interviews scheduled for December 2025 saw their slots cancelled without prior notice. While some were initially reassigned dates in February–March 2026, several now report that their interviews have been pushed even further, to October 2026. Chicago is once again witnessing heightened immigration enforcement as U.S. Border Patrol agents resumed visible operations after a pause of nearly a month. According to U.S. media reports, the renewed action began earlier this week and has led to multiple arrests, including that of a Gujarati-origin cab driver. The arrested individual has been identified as Bipin Thakkar, who was taken into custody from O’Hare International Airport. Media reports claim Thakkar has lived in the United States for about 11 years, though Border Patrol authorities have not issued any official confirmation regarding his status or the reasons for his arrest. Thakkar was reportedly detained in front of the media. When questioned, an agent allegedly described him as an “illegal alien.”

Some reports say he broke down during the arrest and requested to speak with a lawyer, claiming to be a heart patient. Local media say at least 15 immigrants were arrested on Wednesday, after around 10 arrests on Monday. The operations are being led by Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino, who has said enforcement was never suspended and will continue in Chicago. Arrests have occurred at gas stations, shopping centers, and airport rideshare areas, where 16 cab drivers were detained. The renewed enforcement has drawn sharp criticism from Illinois Governor J.B. Wellington: New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters has strongly criticised the newly announced India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), calling it “neither free nor fair” and confirming that his party, New Zealand First, will oppose the deal when it comes before Parliament. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Peters said the agreement concedes too much—particularly on immigration—while delivering insufficient benefits to New Zealand, especially in the crucial dairy sector. He argued that while New Zealand would fully open its

market to Indian goods, India has not agreed to lower high tariff barriers on key dairy exports. “Regrettably, this is a bad deal for New Zealand,” Peters said, adding that the exclusion of milk, cheese, and butter makes the agreement “impossible to defend” to farmers and rural communities. Dairy exports were valued at about $13.94 billion in the year to November 2025, accounting for nearly 30 per cent of New Zealand’s total goods exports. Peters said New Zealand First had repeatedly warned its coalition partner, the National Party, against rushing into what it described as a “low-quality” agreement and urged negotiators to seek better outcomes over the full parliamentary term. The party invoked the coalition’s “agree to disagree” clause during Cabinet approval and confirmed it would vote against the enabling legislation. Beyond trade, Peters raised concerns over immigration provisions, including a proposed new employment visa for Indian citizens and expanded work rights for Indian students. While opposing the deal, he stressed that New Zealand First remains committed to strengthening strategic ties with India and said his concerns had been conveyed directly to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

The Foreign Minister said the India FTA would be New Zealand's first trade agreement to exclude key dairy products such as milk, cheese and butter

eteran actor Manoj Bajpayee has offered candid advice to aspiring actors, urging them to focus on learning the craft rather than chasing instant visibility through social media reels. Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated third season of The Family Man, Bajpayee emphasised that acting is a long-term journey that demands discipline, patience, and continuous self-improvement. In an era dominated by short-form digital content, Bajpayee acknowledged the growing influence of social media platforms but cautioned against mistaking popularity for proficiency. “Reels can give you attention, but they cannot give you depth as an actor,” he said, stressing that true growth comes from understanding performance, emotions, and storytelling. According to him, many young aspirants are in a hurry to be seen, often overlooking the importance of theatre, workshops, reading scripts, and observing real life. Bajpayee, whose career spans decades of critically acclaimed performances, credited his own journey to rigorous training and years of struggle. He recalled how theatre and small but meaningful roles helped him develop the range and resilience required to survive in the industry. “If you are serious about acting, you must invest time in learning—there is no shortcut to excellence,” he added. Talking about The Family Man 3, Bajpayee hinted that the upcoming season would push boundaries further, both emotionally and politically, while retaining the show’s trademark blend of realism and humour. He noted that strong writing and well-prepared actors are what make such projects impactful. Concluding his message, Bajpayee advised newcomers to treat social media as a tool, not a goal. “Fame may come and go, but skill stays,” he said, encouraging aspiring actors to build a solid

Kritika Kamra

on Naseeruddin Shah’s Praise, New Projects

A

ctor Kritika Kamra is receiving an overwhelming and deeply emotional response for her latest release The Great Shamsuddin Family, a film that has quietly built its audience through strong word of mouth. Kritika revealed that she has been closely tracking reactions since the film’s release, calling the organic appreciation a pleasant surprise. She shared that beyond reviews, audiences have written detailed blogs, essays, and sent personal messages, reflecting a deeper engagement with the film. One moment that stood out for her was veteran journalist Ravish Kumar writing about the film, which left a strong impression. The appreciation has also poured in from within the film industry. Kritika said messages from people she admires mean the most, recalling filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan praising the film and her performance, and Karan Johar giving it a shoutout. One of the most unforgettable moments came after a screening when legendary actor Naseeruddin Shah held her face and praised her performance, leaving her speechless. Despite the praise, Kritika said the team had modest expectations, only hoping the film would be noticed in a crowded OTT space. She credited writer-director Anusha Rizvi for the film’s impact, calling it an important and personal project for the entire cast. Talking about her character Bani, Kritika said the role resonated deeply with her own life as an eldest daughter and independent working woman. She noted that Bani’s internal struggles around belonging and purpose reflect the realities of many women today. A line from the film — “People who take care of others also need to be cared for” — has especially struck a chord with audiences.

Reflecting on the craft of acting, Bachchan explained how preparation alone is never enough. “We are all in the same profession. But when it is time for the shoot, it should make the audience realise the importance of the situation or a particular scene,” he said, stressing that authenticity and ease of performance are crucial.

New H-1B Visa Rules from February 2026 as DHS Ends Lottery System Zofeen Maqsood

The H-1B visa process that has been a hot topic for debate this entire year, is finally set for a major overhaul. On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it is moving away from the long-standing random lottery system toward a model that favors higher-skilled and higherpaid foreign professionals. The shift, as per DHS, is aimed at safeguarding wages, working conditions, and employment opportunities for American workers. Under the new rule, visa selections will be weighted rather than random, strengthen America’s competitiveness giving an advantage to applicants by incentivizing American employers associated with higher skill levels to petition for higher-paid, higherand stronger pay benchmarks. skilled foreign workers.” The U.S. Citizenship and “ As part of the Trump Immigration Services spokesman Administration’s commitment to H-1B Matthew Tragesser said, “The reform, we will continue to demand existing random selection process more from both employers and aliens of H-1B registrations was exploited so as not to undercut American and abused by U.S. employers who workers and to put America first,” were primarily seeking to import Tragesser also said. foreign workers at lower wages than The H-1B program, one of the most they would pay American workers.” popular work-visa programs for He added, “The new weighted skilled professionals, allows for 65,000 selection will better serve Congress’ visas, every year. Along with this, an intent for the H-1B program and additional 20,000 slots are reserved for

foreign nationals who hold advanced degrees from U.S. institutions. It may be noted that the current lottery-based system has been under scrutiny with many criticizing that it opened the option of unfair practices, particularly by employers submitting large volumes of registrations for lower-paid roles. There is also a big section that believes that the process unfairly prefers foreign workers and the U.S. workers are not benefited. This final rule is aimed to contain those concerns. As it increases the likelihood of visas going to higherpaid and higher-skilled applicants.

Under the new rule, the H-1B visa selections will give advantage to applicants associated with higher skill levels and stronger pay benchmarks. “With these regulatory changes and others in the future, we will continue to update the H-1B program to help American businesses without allowing the abuse that was harming American workers.” Matthew Tragesser, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services spokesman What is significant is that the change is coming sooner than many may have thought as DHS confirmed that the regulation will take effect on Feb. 27, 2026, ahead of the FY 2027 H-1B cap registration cycle.

Google To Resume Green Card Sponsorship For H-1B Holders In 2026: Eligibility Details Inside

G

HiIndia Newsdesk

oogle has informed its employees that it plans to scale up PERM applications in 2026, a key step that helps foreign workers transition from work visas to permanent residency in the United States. According to a December internal newsletter seen by Business Insider, eligible employees will be contacted by the company's external immigration lawyers in the first quarter of 2026. The Program Electronic Review Management (PERM) process is commonly used by technology firms to support employees on visas such as the H-1B in obtaining a US green card. The move comes at a time when tech workers on work visas are facing increased uncertainty due to recent policy changes, including higher H-1B visa fees and longer processing delays. Google's legal advisers have also cautioned some visa-holding employees against international travel because of significant delays in visa processing.

Google plans to expand its PERM green card sponsorship program in 2026, setting clear eligibility rules tied to job role. The memo outlined strict eligibility criteria for PERM applications. Employees must work in roles that require a formal degree and prior professional experience. In addition, only office-based employees will be

considered. Remote employees must agree to relocate to a Google office to qualify. Performance and job level will also play a role. Employees at Level 3 or below are less likely to meet the requirements, the memo said. Staff must also be in good standing with the company and hold a "Moderate Impact" (MI) or higher rating in their annual performance reviews. Google had paused most PERM

applications in January 2023, the same period when it laid off around 12,000 employees. Like Google, other major tech companies had slowed PERM filings amid widespread layoffs, which made it harder to justify hiring foreign workers. While Google continued limited PERM filings in 2024 and 2025, the 2026 plan signals a broader expansion of the program. What is a PERM (Program Electronic Review Management) Application and Why It Matters for Green Card Processing? A PERM application is the first step for US employers to sponsor foreign workers for permanent residency (Green Cards) under EB-2 or EB-3 categories. Managed by the Department of Labor, the process requires employers to prove through a recruitment drive that no qualified US workers are available for the role. In 2025, due to significant backlogs, the entire certification process typically takes 18 to 24 months to complete..

The Donald Trump administration in the United States announced a mega Christmas incentive for undocumented immigrants to leave the country voluntarily. The demonstrations are being led by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal to denounce alleged atrocities against Hindus and vandalism of their religious places in Bangladesh. "Those illegal aliens who don't take advantage of this special offer today have only one alternative: They will be arrested, deported, and they will never be able to return to the United States," it added. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, in a statement, said that undocumented immigrants should take advantage of the "gift and self-deport because if they don't, we will find them, we will arrest them, and they will never return." According to DHS, 1.9 million undocumented migrants have voluntarily self-deported, and tens of thousands of them have used CBP Home since January 2025. The CBP app was created during the Biden administration for migrants to schedule asylum interviews, but President Donald Trump's team rebranded it and transformed its purpose.

The Bera Family’s Impact on Global Healthcare at UCI

HiIndia Newsdesk

IRVINE, CA – Education has always shaped the Bera family’s story, and at UC Irvine it has found a lasting, practical expression through the India Summer Travel Program. Central to this effort is Dr. Rimal Bera, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, whose deep ties to the university and commitment to global health have transformed a family legacy into a meaningful educational initiative for future physicians. The Bera family’s belief in education as a path to opportunity began with Kanta and Babulal Bera, who grew up in modest circumstances in Gujarat before immigrating to the United States in the late 1950s. Through perseverance, multiple jobs, and advanced degrees, they raised three sons—Raja,

Rimal, and Ami—and modeled lives of service and determination. Their Los Angeles home became a welcoming place for hundreds of students from India and Africa seeking education and a new start. Growing up in that environment shaped Dr. Bera’s understanding of community and responsibility. A graduate of UC Irvine for both his undergraduate and medical degrees, he later returned as faculty, bringing with him those early lessons. In 2020, the Bera family donated $100,000 to permanently support medical student travel to Rajkot, enabling students to work in underserved communities, collaborate with local physicians, and gain global clinical experience. Rajkot holds special significance. Kanta Bera was the first girl from her village to attend middle

school there, a determination that later inspired the establishment of the K B Bera School in Gondal. Today, the school educates 600 girls from underserved villages. UC Irvine medical students visit the school annually, engaging with students on public health, prevention, and medical careers—an experience that many describe as deeply transformative. Clinically, students train at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Medical College, gaining exposure to medicine practiced under resource constraints. Dr. Bera emphasizes humility, cultural understanding, and service, reminding students that medicine’s greatest lessons are human. At its core, the program reflects the Bera family’s enduring belief that education is the most powerful and lasting gift.

NEWARK, NJ - The final weeks of 2025 have brought more troubling news for New Jersey workers, as a fresh round of layoffs has pushed the state’s total job cuts beyond 16,000 for the year. The largest recent reduction comes from Verizon, which announced it will eliminate 1,319 positions in New Jersey, according to the state Department of Labor’s WARN notice database. Other companies reporting layoffs in recent weeks include Wonder Group, a fastcasual restaurant chain cutting 121 jobs by Feb. 19; CMC Energy Services in Hamilton, reducing 89 positions by March; Intercept Pharmaceuticals in Morristown, laying off 146 workers by June 30; and Anheuser-Busch, which will eliminate 151 jobs in Newark in March. The continued job losses have raised concerns about whether New Jersey is approaching a recession. The state’s unemployment rate stood at 5.2 percent

hiring and 12 percent foresee reductions. Wages, however, remain an area of growth. Sixty-seven percent of employers expect to raise pay in 2026, including 10 percent planning increases of 5 percent or more. Economists remain divided on whether the layoffs signal a recession. While Moody’s chief economist Mark Zandi said New Jersey was already in a recession this fall, Rutgers policy expert Marc Pfeiffer urged caution, noting that economic conditions remain fluid. Despite stagnation, Siekerka said modest plans for wage growth and hiring offer some reassurance. “It’s not necessarily doom and gloom,” she said.

WASHINGTON, DC -The Trump administration may want to permanently end certain green-card programs but is limited by existing law, according to former USCIS official Ricky Murray. He said executive actions cannot override statutes, making temporary “pauses” the furthest the administration can go without congressional approval. The issue resurfaced after Neves Valente, a green-card holder who entered the U.S. through the Diversity Visa program, was linked to multiple fatal shootings before dying by suicide. Officials cited his case while emphasizing that green cards and visas can be revoked if laws are broken. Murray criticized the administration for using isolated crimes to justify broad immigration restrictions, arguing the system is meant to assess individual merit, not punish entire groups. The Diversity Visa program issues up to 55,000 green cards annually and any permanent changes would require Congress. As of January 2024, about 12.8 million lawful permanent residents live in the U.S. The administration continues tightening legal immigration pathways as part of its push for large-scale deportations.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the continued silence of international media and global institutions regarding violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. The statement followed the brutal mob lynching of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, on December 18 in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district, over allegations of blasphemy for allegedly insulting Islam. According to reports, an Islamist mob lynched Das, hung his body from a tree, and set it on fire. Condemning the incident, CoHNA warned that Bangladesh is “descending into a state of savagery,” with Hindus bearing the brunt of escalating violence. The organization also criticized recent attacks on diplomats and the vandalism of media offices, including The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, outlets that have attempted to continue reporting on what CoHNA termed the “expanding reign of Islamist terror.”

CoHNA accused global institutions and international media of deliberately ignoring the killing, despite the circulation of disturbing images and videos documenting the brutality. It noted that the United Nations Human Rights Commission and other international human rights bodies failed to address Das’s murder, even though it involved a clear violation of the most basic human right—the right to life. “The UN Human Rights Commission issued a statement condemning the murder of an Islamist leader, yet made no mention of Das or the persistent violence against minorities,” CoHNA said. The organization also noted that the US Embassy in Dhaka condemned the Islamist leader’s death on social media but did not reference Das. CoHNA further warned that those seeking justice for Das may soon be labeled as “Hindu nationalists,” “rightwing,” or “agents of the Indian state.” The group concluded that, as in past cases, Das’s murder risks being forgotten by the world, mourned only by his impoverished family.

Chetak LLC expanded its recall on Sept. 8 to include additional Deep-branded frozen vegetable and fruit products, following an initial voluntary recall announced on July 16. The affected items were packaged in flexible plastic bags bearing lot numbers and “use by” dates printed on the back. The pro duc ts were dist r ibute d nationwide and manufactured between Dec. 18, 2024, and Aug. 18, 2025. The FDA advises consumers who purchased the recalled products to immediately stop using them and either discard them or return them to the place of purchase. Salmonella can cause serious and

U.S. Immigration Overhaul Expected in 2026 HiIndia Newsdesk

WASHINGTON, DC -The Trump administration is rapidly reshaping U.S. immigration policy through a wave of executive orders, regulatory proposals, and agency guidance that collectively restrict legal migration pathways, tighten asylum eligibility, and increase scrutiny of workers, students, and families. In 2025, the White House, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued multiple actions that—pending litigation and rulemaking—could significantly alter who may enter, remain in, or obtain permanent residency in the United States. USCIS and DHS have also confirmed inflation-based fee increases taking effect January 1, 2026, raising costs for asylum, parole, TPS-related filings, work authorization requests, and certain travel programs such as ESTA and EVUS. The administration has signaled a tougher stance on high-skilled visas, particularly the H-1B program. A presidential proclamation introduced a controversial $100,000 fee on certain new H-1B petitions, prompting immediate lawsuits from employers, universities, and worker groups. Plaintiffs argue the fee exceeds

presidential authority and undermines Congress’s intent to allow U.S. employers access to global talent. At the same time, DHS has expanded audits, site visits, and requests for evidence, slowing approvals and increasing denial rates, even for renewals. Immigration enforcement has intensified beyond visas. Following a deadly shooting involving an immigrant, USCIS announced it would begin reviewing green-card and other immigration statuses for individuals from 19 countries. USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said officers may now consider country-specific factors as “significant negative factors,” a move critics warn could divert agency resources and delay routine processing. Migration Policy Institute experts caution that applicants from affected countries may fall out of status and face detention or removal. The administration has also revived and expanded the “public-charge” test for green-card applicants and set the refugee admissions cap for fiscal year 2026 at 7,500—the lowest in program history—prioritizing a narrower set of applicants. Travel restrictions are expanding as well, adding five countries to the full ban list and imposing partial restrictions on 15 others starting in 2026. Additional changes include higher USCIS fees, reduced automatic extensions of work authorization, shorter EAD validity periods, and increased recruitment of deportation judges. At the same time, the administration unveiled a $1 million “Gold Card” visa offering a pathway to permanent residence for wealthy investors. Experts warn USCIS is increasingly shifting from a benefits agency toward an enforcement role, creating uncertainty for immigrants, employers, and institutions navigating a fast-changing and unpredictable system.

The administration has also revived and expanded the “public-charge” test for green-card applicants and set the refugee admissions cap for fiscal year 2026 at 7,500—the lowest in program history—prioritizing a narrower set of applicants.

Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has strongly condemned racist attacks against Usha Vance, the first Indian American and Hindu Second Lady of the United States. Ramaswamy’s remarks came after far-right commentator Nick Fuentes used a racial slur to target Vance, whose Indian heritage has made her a frequent subject of online abuse. Speaking at AmericaFest in Phoenix, Ramaswamy echoed his recent New York Times op-ed, declaring that anyone who uses slurs against an Indian American public figure like Vance “has no place in the conservative movement.” Framing the issue as one of leadership and values, Ramaswamy argued that tolerating racist attacks risks normalizing “un-American animus,” urging conservative leaders to draw firm boundaries against extremist ideology. Usha Vance, born to Telugu Indian immigrant parents, has faced sustained race- and gender-based harassment online. A 2024 analysis found tens of thousands of posts targeting her across major platforms, underscoring how her visibility as an Indian American woman in national politics has made her a focal point for extremist attacks.

Amazon blocks 1,800 job applications from suspected North Korean agents HiIndia Newsdesk

A top Amazon executive revealed that the company has blocked more than 1,800 job applications from suspected North Korean agents. Amazon’s Chief Security Officer Stephen Schmidt said in a LinkedIn post that North Koreans tried to apply for remote working IT jobs using stolen or fake identities. “Their objective is typically straightforward: get hired, get paid, and funnel wages back to fund the regime’s weapons programs,” he said, adding that this trend is likely to be happening at scale across the industry, especially in the U.S. Authorities in the U.S. and South Korea have issued warnings about Pyongyang’s operatives carrying out online scams. Schmidt mentioned that Amazon has seen a nearly one-third increase in job applications from North Koreans in the past year. He said that the operatives typically work with people managing “laptop farms” — computers in the U.S. run remotely from outside the country. He also added that the company used a combination of artificial intelligence tools and verification by its staff to screen job applications.

In Primetime Address, Trump Avoids Discussion Rising Costs Facing Americans Trump tanks the economy — and IL GOP gives him free rein

HiIndia Newsdesk

CHICAGO, IL — Donald Trump spent 18 minutes boasting about the economy—despite the fact that all he’s delivered are higher prices, stagnant wages, and extreme uncertainty for American families. And the Illinois GOP is letting him get away with it. “Donald Trump’s primetime address celebrating his failing economy was an insult to the millions of Americans who are spending more than ever on groceries, electric bills, and health care,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “The truth is, Trump doesn’t care how much working people pay at the grocery store. He cares about the corporations and secret donors funding his new ballroom.” The numbers speak for themselves: • Energy prices are up 13% since Trump took office. • Wage growth is at its lowest point since May 2021.

And due in part to his tariffs, the U.S. has lost tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs this year alone. Anyone hoping tonight’s address would acknowledge the real challenges families are facing was left disappointed. Trump has no intention of righting the ship—in fact, he’s doubling down on policies that are failing working families in Illinois and across the country. Some Republicans nationwide are

NEW YORK, NY -Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday that New York State will invest an additional $77 million to fund overnight NYPD subway patrols, including police overtime. NYPD officers were first deployed on every overnight train in January as part of the state’s effort to enhance subway safety. Hochul, joined by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Eric Adams, announced that subway crime has fallen to its lowest level in 16 years. Overall subway crime is down 14.4 percent compared to 2019 and down 5.2 percent from 2024. “Crime is down and ridership is up on subways thanks to major investments to keep New Yorkers safe and to deliver better, more reliable transit,” Hochul said. “I am deeply grateful for the work of the men and women of the NYPD who keep riders safe, and I remain committed to advancing public safety efforts that have successfully driven down crime across New York City’s subways.” “Never in the history of the state has New York invested money in NYPD overtime,” the governor added. “We’re going to do it again.” It remains unclear whether the National Guard will continue subway patrols. In September, Hochul said the Guard would remain in place “for the months to come.”

Trump has already faced a series of political setbacks: • The Indiana GOP bucked him on his redistricting efforts. • House Republicans voted to release the Epstein files after Trump tried to block their disclosure. • Vot e r s — e v e n i n R e pu b l i c a n strongholds—have delivered a string of embarrassing election defeats to Trump and his party. Yet the Illinois GOP continues to back him 100 percent, no matter how much it costs working families in our state. The question is simple: Will Illinois Republicans stand with Trump as their constituents suffer—or will they finally stand up and tell him to stop wrecking the economy? The Illinois GOP needs to make a choice: break with Trump now, or own the havoc he’s inflicting on everyday people in Illinois.

BROADVIEW, IL — Following a federal court ruling that blocked the Trump administration’s restrictions on congressional access to immigration detention facilities, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) conducted an oversight visit at the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility after months of being unlawfully denied entry. Earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Jia M. Cobb temporarily halted ICE and Department of Homeland Security policies that required Members of Congress to provide seven days’ notice before visiting immigration detention facilities. The court found that these restrictions likely exceeded DHS’s statutory authority and unlawfully interfered with Congress’s constitutional

and the obligation to conduct real-time oversight. My visit follows a clear court ruling reaffirming that authority, and I will continue using every tool available to force the Trump Administration to follow the law, respect due process, and treat people in custody with the dignity the American people demand.” The Broadview facility has been a rep e ate d f lashp oint for denie d congressional access. On October 8 and again on October 13, Congressman Krishnamoorthi was turned away despite citing his statutory authority to conduct oversight. Earlier this year, on June 17, he was also denied entry to a South Loop ICE facility alongside Congressman Jonathan Jackson, where ICE officials contacted local law enforcement in an attempt to remove the Members of Congress from the premises.

Lisa Khanna Claims Instacart Fired Her Over Fear of Trump Supporter Backlash HiIndia Newsdesk

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Long before entering politics, Lisa Vedernikova Khanna learned how fragile opportunity can be. R aised by a single mother who fled Soviet Russia and spent years undocumented in the United States, Khanna grew up watching her parent build a small business while navigating life on the margins. By her early teens, Khanna was working multiple jobs to help support her family, a routine she continued through college. She says those experiences shaped her commitment to public service and ultimately led her to run for Congress. Now, Khanna alleges that decision cost her a job. In a lawsuit filed December 14 in San Francisco Superior Court, the former Instacart executive claims the grocery delivery company fired her out of concern over political backlash tied to her Democratic policy positions. Khanna, who is running for Congress

The lawsuit alleges Instacart sought to strengthen ties with Trump-aligned figures after the 2024 election, including donating to Trump’s inaugural fund. in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, served as chief of staff to Instacart’s chief corporate affairs officer beginning in early 2023. She was terminated in June, according to the complaint. The lawsuit alleges that Instacart initially approved Khanna’s plan to seek elected office but later reversed course

after reviewing her campaign website. Company leaders allegedly objected to her public support for abortion rights and gun control, concluding that potential Republican criticism and scrutiny from a Trump administration posed too great a risk. Within hours of that review, Khanna was told she

could not continue her campaign while remaining employed. Less than two weeks later, she was fired, the suit claims, explicitly because of her policy views. The allegations were first reported by The Washington Post. Instacart strongly disputes the claims. In a statement to CNBC, a company spokesperson said Khanna’s separation had nothing to do with politics, noting that the company offered alternatives such as a leave of absence or a paid consulting arrangement during her campaign. Khanna’s attorneys argue the case reflects a broader corporate shift following President Donald Trump’s return to office. The lawsuit alleges Instacart sought to strengthen ties with Trump-aligned figures after the 2024 election, including donating to Trump’s inaugural fund. Khanna contends her firing violated California laws protecting employee political activity. She is seeking a jury trial, punitive damages, and compensation for lost income and emotional distress.

Rajan Zed Honored Mass Deportations Could With Key to the City of Deepen the Nation’s Childcare Humboldt in Tennessee Shortage

HiIndia Newsdesk

WASHINGTON, DC -A new report from the American Immigration Council warns that the U.S. childcare system—already strained by high costs, staffing shortages, and rising demand—faces severe disruption under President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda. The loss of even a portion of the childcare workforce could leave families without reliable care and force many parents out of the labor force. Titled Immigrant Workers and the Childcare Crisis: What’s at Stake for Families and the Economy, the report finds that immigrants make up about one in five childcare workers nationwide, with far higher shares in major metro areas such as Miami and San Jose. More than half of these workers are non-citizens, and nearly one-third are undocumented, making them particularly vulnerable to deportation or loss of work authorization. The report includes in-depth profiles of 10 childcare providers and parents whose livelihoods and family stability are already being affected by stepped-up enforcement actions and visa uncertainty. According to Jeremy Robbins, executive director of the American Immigration Council, “Working parents already feel the strain of a childcare system that’s barely holding together. Parents can’t clock in if they don’t have safe, stable childcare, and immigrants play a key role in providing that. Mass deportation pulls that

foundation out from under families and jeopardizes parents’ ability to stay in the labor force.” Researchers document how enforcement crackdowns have already disrupted childcare access in several communities. In South Philadelphia, a daycare serving mostly low-income immigrant families saw enrollment fall from 158 children to 97 after enforcement actions, forcing layoffs and classroom closures. In Washington, D.C., a preschool lost teachers who were unable to maintain work authorization under new restrictions. Key findings show that 20.1 percent of U.S. childcare workers—more than 282,000 people, overwhelmingly women—are immigrants. In cities like San Jose and Miami, immigrants account for more than twothirds of the childcare workforce, and nearly half in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Staffing shortages are already severe, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting more than 160,000 childcare job openings annually over the next decade. Beyond households, the report warns of broader economic consequences. Census data show that in 2025, nearly 13 million households with children experienced work disruptions due to lost childcare. As Nan Wu, the council’s director of research, notes, removing immigrant childcare workers would sharply reduce workforce participation and further weaken an already fragile economy.Do you like this personality?

Gambhir Family Trust’s $4 Million Gift Advances Academic Excellence at UCLA HiIndia Newsdesk

LOS ANGELES, CA – The University of California, Los Angeles has received a bequest of more than $4 million to strengthen the long-term training of future physician scientists, marking one of the most significant recent private gifts to its Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). Made through the Gambhir Family Trust, the gift establishes a $3 million endowed chair and a $1 million fellowship at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Together, the endowments will provide sustained support for the UCLA–Caltech Medical Scientist Training Program, a highly selective dual-degree pathway that prepares physicians to integrate patient care with cutting-edge biomedical research. The bequest honors the legacy of Sanjiv “Sam” Gambhir, a UCLA-trained physician scientist who became an internationally recognized pioneer in molecular imaging and early cancer detection. Gambhir earned his PhD and MD at UCLA in the early 1990s

Tragically, Gambhir’s life and work were shaped by profound personal

loss. His teenage son, Milan, died in 2015 after battling glioblastoma, the same aggressive brain cancer Gambhir studied in his laboratory. Gambhir himself died of cancer in 2020 at age 57, followed by the death of his wife, Aruna

Bodapati Gambhir, in 2023 after a long fight with breast cancer. Sangeeta Gambhir, trustee of the Gambhir Family Trust and Gambhir’s sister, said UCLA was chosen because of its central role in her brother’s life and career. “Although we are heartbroken, we know Sam’s memory will live on in the physician scientists and patients who benefit from his legacy,” she said. After leaving UCLA in 2003, Gambhir joined Stanford School of Medicine, where he served as chair of radiology, founded multiple interdisciplinary centers, co-authored nearly 700 peerreviewed papers, held 40 patents, and helped launch several biotechnology companies. At UCLA, the endowed chair will supp or t fac ulty leadership and mentorship within the MSTP, while the fellowship will ease financial burdens for trainees pursuing high-risk, highreward research. “This gift reflects a deep understanding of how physician scientists are trained,” said Dr. Olujimi Ajijola, co-director of the program.

PORT ARTHUR, TX - Newly released body camera footage from the Port Arthur Police Department played a critical role in the conviction of Ankur Patel, a local businessman found guilty of his third DWI offense. The video, obtained from the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, shows Patel, 42, attempting to evade arrest by appealing emotionally to the arresting officer, saying, “I love you, just help me out.” During the trial, Jefferson County Assistant District Attorney Daniel Boyd emphasized Patel’s repeated disregard for the law and public safety. “You’ve given him a chance. You’ve given him a probated punishment there, and he continued just to ignore that and not take it seriously,” Boyd told the jury. “He has a disregard for not only his safety, but the safety of everybody else out there.” The bodycam footage, recorded in 2022, shows Patel parked in the middle of a feeder road near Highway 365. He told officers he was returning from a Super Bowl party. The video captures Patel struggling to complete sobriety tests, appearing incoherent, stumbling repeatedly, and eventually falling onto his back. Despite pleading with officers for leniency and referencing his prior DWI history, Patel was taken into custody. Boyd also addressed the broader danger posed by repeat drunk driving offenders. “It’s actually far too common. They just don’t take it seriously,” Boyd said. “They think no one got hurt this time—until someone is hurt, until someone is burned up in a vehicle, families are killed tragically together. Often times, the individual driving intoxicated survives and leaves a trail of tragedy.” Court records show Patel’s blood-alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit at the time of his arrest. A jury ultimately found him guilty, and Judge John Stevens sentenced Patel to two and a half years in prison.

KERRIVILLE, TX – A Texas city honored Sewa International and its partner Indian American organizations for their leadership and service during the devastating July 4 flash floods, recognizing their critical role in emergency response and long-term recovery efforts, according to a press release. The recognition was presented on December 9 by Kerrville city officials, the Kerr Economic Development Corporation, and the Kerr Together Long-Term Recovery Group. Officials credited Sewa International with helping stabilize operations during one of the city’s most challenging crises of the year. Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring praised the organization’s efforts, saying, “This wasn’t just emergency response — it was a ministry. Helping others is how we serve God, and Sewa International embodied that spirit every single day. Their volunteers brought hope, structure, and humanity when our community needed it most.” City representatives recalled the strong presence and impact of Sewa volunteers at the emergency site. “It was impossible to miss the sea of yellow T-shirts,” one official said, referring to volunteers who managed traffic, coordinated logistics, and organized hundreds of community members at Tivy Antler Stadium. “At a moment when we were overwhelmed and unsure how to manage the sheer scale of operations, Sewa stepped in and brought order, compassion, and unwavering commitment. That made all the difference,” the official added. Sewa’s partner organization, the Indo-American Charity Foundation (IACF), also contributed $50,000 toward flood recovery efforts. IACF representatives said their guiding principle was simple: “We live here, we give here.” Highlighting the collaborative nature of the response, IACF President Pankaj Rana said, “The strength of our response came from unity. Partnering with Sewa International allowed us to break silos, combine resources, and make a meaningful impact quickly.”

Chicago-Area Immigration Blitz Sparks Public Clash Between Federal and Local Leaders HiIndia Newsdesk

CHICAGO, IL -Federal immigration agents arrested a man at an Evanston gas station Wednesday morning, prompting a sharp exchange between U.S. Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino and Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss. Bovino told Biss his team was addressing “violence committed by those that shouldn’t be here in your community.” Biss, a Democrat running for Congress, responded that he was unaware of such activity. “Well, that’s probably the problem. Maybe

you should get aware,” Bovino replied as protesters jeered and blew whistles at the Mobil station on Green Bay Road. Biss later accused Bovino of dodging questions about

his mission and authority, calling him a “condescending, sarcastic liar” and accusing federal agents of staging a spectacle to intimidate immigrant communities. After the arrest, Bovino told reporters his agents were “still running checks” and could not immediately justify the detention. He said Border Patrol could remain in Chicago indefinitely, adding, “We’ve got a lot of work to do here… a lot of illegal aliens to arrest.” Bovino’s team returned to the Chicago area Tuesday after leaving last month amid controversy. At least nine people were

arrested Wednesday across the city and suburbs, including two men pulled from a pickup truck outside a Home Depot in Evanston and another detained in Mount Prospect. Sixteen people were arrested in the rideshare lot at O’Hare International Airport, Bovino said on X. Among those detained was Bibim Thakar, an Indian rideshare driver who said he has lived in the U.S. for more than 11 years, has a history of heart attacks and pleaded to speak with a lawyer. An agent said Thakar “does not have status.”
