US seizes oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, Trump says
US forces have seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, President Donald Trump said, marking a sharp escalation in Washington's pressure campaign against Nicolás Maduro's government.
"We have just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela - a large tanker, very large, the largest one ever seized actually," Trump told reporters at the White House.
Releasing a video of the seizure, Attorney General Pam Bondi described the vessel as a "crude oil tanker used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran".
Caracas swiftly denounced the action, calling it an act of
Russian, Chinese Bombers Near Japan Trigger US Warning
Russia and China conducted a "longdistance joint flight" from the Sea of Japan toward the East China Sea, amid escalating tensions between Tokyo and Beijing, the Japanese Defence Ministry said. As a response, Japan and South Korea scrambled their jets to monitor the Russian and Chinese air forces - two Russian Tu-95 nuclear-capable strategic bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers. Four Chinese J-16 fighters joined the rest of the bombers as they flew between Japan's Okinawa and Miyako islands.
Trump Vows to Make America Affordable Again
President Donald Trump has told a campaign-style rally that consumer prices are falling "tremendously", as he seeks to allay voter anxiety about the cost of living in the US.
In a speech at a casino in the battleground state of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, the president told supporters he had "no higher priority than making America affordable again".
But while fuel and egg prices have fallen, other food is more expensive and Americans remain unhappy about the cost of housing, childcare and healthcare.
"international piracy". Earlier, President Maduro declared that Venezuela would never become an "oil colony". The Trump administration accuses Venezuela of funnelling narcotics into the US and has intensified its efforts to isolate President Maduro in recent months. Venezuela - home to some of the world's largest proven oil reserves - has, in turn, accused Washington of seeking to steal its resources. Brent crude prices inched higher on Wednesday as news of the seizure stoked short-term supply concerns. Analysts warn the move could threaten shippers and further disrupt Venezuela's oil exports.
US Plans Mandatory Social Media Disclosure For Visa-Exempt Tourists
United States: The administration of US President Donald Trump plans to order visa-exempt foreign tourists to disclose their social media histories from the last five years before entering the country, according to an official notice.
The proposal laid out in a notice published Tuesday in the Federal Register would apply to visitors from 42 countries, including Britain, France, Australia and Japan, who do not need a visa to enter the United States. Currently, those travellers only need apply for a waiver known as the Electonic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which still requires them to provide certain personal details.
Under the proposed new rules, the collection of social media data would become a "mandatory" part of ESTA applications. Applicants would need to provide their social media histories from the last five years, according to the notice.
They would also have to submit other
Danish Intelligence Says US Now A Possible Security Risk
A Danish intelligence agency has for the first time described the US as a potential security risk, signalling a shift in the Nordic country's view of its close ally amid geopolitical frictions over Greenland.
The Danish Defence Intelligence Service - one of the two key espionage agencies in the Nordic nation - said the US is increasingly prioritising its own interests and "now using its economic and technological strength as a tool of power, also toward allies and partners," according to its 2025 intelligence outlook published Wednesday.
US Judge Halts Trump’s LA National Guard Move
A federal judge on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump's deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles and ordered the troops be returned to the state governor's control. In June, Trump sent thousands of National Guard troops to the California city in the wake of protests over his administration ramping up immigration raids in Los Angeles.
Under the proposed new rules, the collection of social media data would become a "mandatory" part of ESTA applications. Applicants would need to provide their social media histories from the last five years, according to the notice.
"high-value data fields" including phone numbers from the last five years, email addresses from the past decade, personal details of family members and biometric information. The public has 60 days to comment on the proposal.
The Trump administration has tightened curbs on entering the United States, part of a sweeping crackdown on migration.
Along with Mexico and Canada, the country will host the 2026 World Cup, which is certain to attract large numbers of soccer fans from across the world.
US District Judge Charles Breyer said the Trump administration had not proven that that the city's protests against immigration justified taking federal control of the state's National Guard.
Canada’s US Ambassador to Quit Before Trade Talks
Canada's ambassador to Washington Kirsten Hillman has announced she will be stepping down in the new year - a key departure as trade talks between the US and Canada remain stalled. In a post on X late on Monday, Hillman said there is never a "perfect time" to leave such a post but that she is grateful for the confidence that was placed in her "as the Canada-US relationship is being rewritten".

Florida Gujarati Owner Must Pay $779M in Guard’s Death
Jury rules owner liable after illegal gambling café became target of violent robbery
A Florida jury has ordered Manish Patel, a Gujarati owner of an illegal gambling café near Tallahassee, to pay $779 million to the family of security guard Lewis Butler, who was shot dead during a robbery in November 2023. Butler was killed while protecting a cashier when robber Kevonte Washington opened fire, shooting him eight times. Attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, said this may be one of the largest wrongful-death payouts in a U.S. shooting case.
Patel’s café, operating illegally despite Florida’s long-standing ban on internet gambling cafés, had reportedly become a magnet for crime. The location had been robbed twice earlier, but no police reports were filed due to the illicit nature of the business. In one robbery, a gun was stolen—and that same gun was later used to kill Butler. The café was run under Fortune MGT 2023 LLC.
The jury found Patel grossly negligent for ignoring repeated threats and failing to provide proper security. Washington, the shooter, has since been convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. If Patel does not pay, authorities may recover the amount by seizing revenue, freezing bank accounts, or selling property. Similar cases have occurred elsewhere, though none with such a massive verdict.
Machado’s First Public Sighting in 11 Months
Norway: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado greeted supporters from the balcony of her hotel in Oslo early Thursday, her first public appearance in 11 months. Arriving too late in Norway to attend the ceremony, Machado was awarded the prestigious peace prize in absentia. Since going into hiding, Machado's only public appearance was on January 9, in Caracas, where she protested President Nicolas Maduro's inauguration for his third term.
Amit Shah: "No Voting Rights For Infiltrators"
New Delhi:
Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a strong attack on the Congress and other opposition parties on Wednesday, accusing them of spreading lies about SIR, tarnishing image of India's democracy and asserted that the Modi government "will not allow infiltrators to get voting rights".
Replying to the debate on electoral reforms in the Lok Sabha, Amit Shah hit back at issues raised by opposition parties including Leader of Opposition
Amit Shah said that it had been decided to hold a discussion on electoral reforms, but most members of the Opposition spoke about SIR instead.

Amit Shah, who faced interruptions from Congress members over his remarks, said the government is ready to discuss all issues according to rules. He said that Opposition wanted a discussion in the name of Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls or SIR, but such a discussion cannot take place in this House because the responsibility for Special Intensive Revision lies with the Election Commission, and the Commission does not work under the Government. Amit Shah said that it had been decided to hold a discussion on electoral reforms, but most members of the Opposition spoke about SIR instead.
Trump Unveils $1M ‘Gold Card’ Citizenship Plan
Washington: President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that his long-promised " gold card " was officially going on sale, offering legal status and an eventual pathway to US citizenship for individuals paying $1 million and corporations ponying up twice that per foreign-born employee.
Donald Trump has been been promoting the gold card program for months, and once suggested that each card would cost $5 million, though he more recently revised that to the $1 million and $2 million pricing scheme.
A website accepting applications went live as Trump revealed the start of the program while surrounded by business leaders in the White House's Roosevelt Room. It is meant to replace EB-5 visas, which Congress created in 1990 to generate foreign investment and had been available to people who spend about $1 million on a company that employs at least 10 people.
Indian Man Jailed 90 Months in $2.2M Elder Fraud
Patel personally travelled to the homes of at least 11 elderly victims in Illinois
Elder fraud prosecutions have risen sharply in recent years in the United States, where federal agencies have intensified efforts to combat cross-border scams often linked to international networks.
A US federal judge has sentenced Ligneshkumar H Patel, a 38-yearold Indian national, to 90 months in prison for participating in a largescale imposter fraud scheme that targeted elderly victims across five Midwestern states. Patel pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and financial institution fraud, along with two counts of wire fraud. He has been ordered to pay over $2 million in restitution.
According to the Department of Justice, Patel and his co-conspirators posed as federal agents or law-enforcement officers to deceive victims into handing over money, financial access, or personal information. They told victims their assets needed to be surrendered for “protection.” US Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft described such operations as international scams that often rely on US-based “money mules” to collect funds in person.
Court documents show Patel personally visited the homes of at least 11 elderly victims in Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin, collecting cash and gold totaling more than $2.23 million. Prosecutors said the wider conspiracy involved at least 85 victims and intended losses of more than $6.9 million.
McDonald’s Employee Shot Dead in Georgia; 15-Year-Old Suspect Surrenders
A 17-year-old employee was shot dead inside a Gujarati-owned McDonald’s in Elberton, Georgia, late Tuesday night, in a shocking incident that has led to the arrest of a 15-year-old boy. Police said both the victim and the alleged shooter knew each other, and the confrontation stemmed from an argument involving a girl.
According to Elberton Police, a 911 call was received around 10:15 pm reporting gunfire at the McDonald’s located on Elbert Street. Officers arrived to find the teenage employee lying injured in the lobby with multiple gunshot wounds. The shooter had already fled the scene. The victim was rushed to Elbert Memorial Hospital, where he died
during treatment.
Investigators say the dispute escalated rapidly, leading the juvenile suspect to fire multiple rounds before escaping. However, the teen surrendered to police on Wednesday at around 2 pm. Authorities confirmed that he will face murder and related charges.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case. Because both individuals are minors, their identities
have not been released.
Mikesh Patel, the owner-operator of the McDonald’s, expressed deep grief, confirming that the victim was an employee at the store. Local media reported that the restaurant remained closed through Wednesday night as the crime scene was processed.
Further details are expected once the investigation progresses

Asudden wave of H-1B and H-4 visa appointment cancellations across India has thrown thousands of workers and families into uncertainty, with many seeing their long-planned December 2025 interview slots pushed into March, April, and even July 2026. The disruption follows the U.S. government’s rollout of mandatory social-media screening for workvisa applicants, a shift that consular posts say is slowing down their daily processing capacity.
A Policy Change Triggering a Wave of Delays
In the past week, applicants scheduled at U.S. consulates in Chennai and Hyderabad began receiving abrupt emails informing them that their interviews had been cancelled and rescheduled for mid-2026. Many had already traveled to India specifically for stamping, arranged employer leave, or timed their return to the U.S. around their December appointments. Consular messages reviewed by applicants confirm that posts are adjusting to a new mandate requiring an “online presence review” for every H-1B and H-4 applicant beginning December 15, 2025. Under the policy, consular officers must examine applicants’ publicly viewable social media profiles and verify all usernames linked to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and X.
To accommodate the additional vetting steps, posts have reduced the number of H-visa interviews they can conduct daily prompting widespread appointment shifts into 2026. One Chennai consular email told an applicant
Social Media Screening
Hundreds of H-1B and H-4 visa applicants abroad are reporting sudden cancellations and reassignment of appointments to 2026, comes amid U.S. consulates preparing to implement a new mandate requiring officers to review each applicant’s online presence and social media activity beginning December 15.
Applicants shared consular emails confirming that posts will conduct fewer interviews per day once the new digital-footprint screening begins, prompting officials to cancel upcoming slots to prevent internal backlogs. The rescheduling has upended travel plans, employment timelines, and re-entry schedules for workers and families who planned their trips around December appointments.
From Dec. 15 onward, all H-1B and H-4 applicants must make their social media profiles public for review. The State Department confirmed the requirement and emphasized that applicants must disclose all usernames ever used across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube, even inactive accounts stating that each visa adjudication is “a national security decision.”
U.S. Moves to Check Social Media of All Visa-Waiver Visitors
The U.S. is weighing a new rule requiring foreign travelers to disclose
H-1B Work Pause
Indians Suddenly Stuck as Visa Dates Moved to 2026
New U.S. social-media vetting rules have triggered sweeping H-1B postponements across India, pushing interviews into 2026. The sudden shift has disrupted return plans for thousands of skilled workers and created fresh uncertainty for families and employers.
Last week, Hi India carried a Cover Story: Do Not Travel, advising all visa holders to avoid international trips. Days later, mass H-1B appointment cancellations across India stranded workers for months, confirming just how volatile U.S. immigration has become. With attorneys across India and America now urgently advising against travel, our timely reporting grounded in real-time policy shifts, expert opinion, and on-the-ground updates helped many readers navigate a rapidly changing landscape.
What the Legal Experts Say
Many had already traveled to India specifically for stamping, arranged employer leave, or timed their return to the U.S. around their December appointments. Consular messages reviewed by applicants confirm that posts are adjusting to a new mandate requiring an “online presence review” for every H-1B and H-4 applicant beginning December 15, 2025.
five years of social media activity before entering the country, including visitors from visa-free nations like Australia, Germany, Japan and the UK. A DHS notice says Customs and Border Protection plans to make social-media disclosure mandatory for all 40 countries in the Visa Waiver Program. The proposal is open for 60 days of public comment and would add to existing ESTA pre-screening. The move comes amid a sharp slump in U.S. tourism. The country is projected to lose $12.5 billion in travel revenue this year, with foreign arrivals expected to fall to 67.9 million — down from 72.4 million in 2024. A global study in May found the U.S. is the only major economy expected to post a tourism revenue decline in 2025.
The social-media rule is part of the Trump administration’s broader tightening of entry policies, including a new travel ban affecting roughly 30 countries. The State Department has already expanded online-vetting to H-1B workers, dependents, and student visa applicants, instructing consular staff to review applicants’ public social-media activity. USCIS has also ordered a re-review of cases involving individuals who entered the U.S. since early 2021 under the Biden administration.
“Many applicants are feeling increasingly hopeless with the prolonged uncertainty in visa processing. A practical option being discussed is for individuals to complete their biometrics, return to the United States if they hold a valid visa stamp, and then travel back later only when their consular interview is scheduled.
This moment also presents a crucial opportunity for Indian lobby groups and diaspora welfare organizations to advocate strongly for domestic visa stamping in the U.S. Implementing local stamping would significantly ease the burden on applicants, reduce travel disruptions, and streamline the overall process — a long-standing demand that has now become more urgent than ever.”

“Visa Holders need to ensure their social media accounts do not have anything against the U.S. administration and/or their policies or national interests. They must check their social media and engagements carefully to avoid any issues with social media vetting. The problem would be that the number of cases that might be put under administrative hold may increase as many FMJ applicants continue to set their social media profiles private, despite the policy change. If you know your social media profile may have some impact, it's best not to travel around this time.”

H-1B Delays for Indians Over US Social Media Rules
The US Embassy in India warned that any visa applicant arriving at the consulate on a previously scheduled interview date after being notified of a reschedule will be refused entry.
The US State Department's new social media vetting policy has triggered massive disruptions for H-1B visa applicants in India as many appointments have been postponed to next year. The US Embassy in India issued an advisory to the visa applicants on Tuesday night.
"If you have received an email advising that your visa appointment has been rescheduled, Mission India looks forward to assisting you on your new appointment date," it said.
The Embassy also warned that any visa applicant arriving at the consulate on a previously scheduled interview date after being notified of a reschedule will be refused entry. "Arriving on your previously scheduled appointment date will result in your being denied admittance to the Embassy or Consulate," the Embassy said.

Goa Club Co-Owner Fakes Injury, Caught

The tactic, however, failed, and Gupta ended up in the police net. Ajay Gupta is in trouble after the deadly fire at 'Birch by Romeo Lane', a nightclub in north Goa that he co-owns with brothers Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra. Indian Man Arrested in Georgia for Staging Fake Robbery to Obtain U Visa
An Indian-origin man has been arrested in Coweta County, Georgia, for allegedly staging a fake armed robbery to fraudulently obtain a U Visa, a U.S. immigration benefit for victims of certain crimes who assist law enforcement.
The incident took place on November 10 at a local gas station, where an armed man entered around 3 a.m. and escaped with a small amount of cash. No injuries were reported, and the station employee initially filed a complaint claiming to be the victim.
However, CCTV footage helped authorities identify and arrest the gunman seven days later.
The investigation then took a dramatic turn. On December 5, police arrested the original complainant, identified as Sunil Mahendra Kumar, 24, claiming he had orchestrated the robbery himself and conspired with the arrested gunman to fabricate the
crime for immigration benefits. Sunil now faces multiple charges, including filing a false police report, felony conspiracy, false statements, tampering with evidence, and failing to update information on his driver’s license. He remains in custody at the Coweta County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office stated the supposed
victim was actually the “main mastermind” behind the staged robbery. Investigators have since carried out a search warrant at the gas station and continued examining the scope of the fraud.
Authorities believe the fake robbery was designed specifically to strengthen a fraudulent U Visa application, commonly misused by undocumented or overstayed immigrants seeking legal status. Officials also revealed that such operations often involve hiring criminals from outside states to minimize detection.
Law enforcement estimates arranging a staged robbery can cost up to $20,000. Similar cases have surfaced in cities including Chicago. A suspected kingpin, Chandrakant Patel, known as ‘Lalo,’ is currently jailed, while many applicants linked to his network have reportedly received notices and may face deportation. Investigations into the Georgia case remain ongoing.

Can No-Carb, No-Alcohol Diet Boost Weight Loss?
HiIndia Newsdesk
The concept of following a “no-carb, noalcohol” diet has become increasingly popular among people seeking rapid weight loss. Social media success stories and celebrity endorsements have added to the hype, promising dramatic transformations by simply removing carbohydrates and alcohol from daily meals. While this approach can lead to noticeable short-term results, experts emphasize that longterm weight management is far more complex than eliminating entire food groups.
Carbohydrates are the body’s main energy source. When carb intake is drastically cut or eliminated, the body shifts into a metabolic state known as ketosis. In ketosis, stored fat is burned for energy instead of glucose, often leading to a quick drop on the weighing scale. However, much of the early weight loss is largely due to water loss rather than actual fat reduction. Glycogen, the stored form of carbohydrates in the body, holds water; when glycogen levels fall, the body releases this excess water, creating the illusion of rapid fat loss. Eliminating alcohol, meanwhile, is supported strongly by health experts. Alcohol contains “empty calories,” meaning it provides energy without essential nutrients. Just a few drinks
A claim circulating widely on X has put a fresh spotlight on weight loss debates. American neuroscientist Andrew Huberman has promoted a simple fat-loss technique that is now viral. According to the viral post, the formula for fast fat loss is straightforward: eat only meat, fish, eggs, fruit, and vegetables. Nothing else. No bread, pasta, rice, tortillas or processed foods. Drink only water, coffee or tea. No alcohol or milk.
can significantly increase daily calorie intake. Additionally, alcohol lowers inhibitions and stimulates appetite, causing people to snack more or make poor dietary choices. Perhaps most importantly, when alcohol is consumed, the liver focuses on metabolizing it first, delaying fatburning processes. Cutting out alcohol therefore helps restore normal metabolism, reduces overall calorie intake, improves sleep quality, and supports better workout performance—all positive contributors to weight loss.
Despite its appeal, a strict no-carb diet carries risks. Carbohydrates are not inherently unhealthy. In fact, many nutritious foods—such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains—are rich in complex carbohydrates that provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and sustained energy. Total carb elimination can lead to tiredness, dizziness, headaches, digestive problems, irritability, and nutritional deficiencies. Some individuals may also experience reduced concentration and lower exercise endurance. Maintaining such a restrictive diet can be mentally challenging and socially isolating, increasing the likelihood of giving up and regaining lost weight quickly.
Experts suggest focusing on quality rather
than total elimination. Instead of cutting out carbohydrates entirely, switching from refined and processed carbs to complex, fiber-rich options is key. Reducing sugary beverages, desserts, white bread, and fast food while prioritizing whole grains, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats promotes steady fat loss without compromising nutritional health.
A balanced diet, combined with alcohol avoidance, adequate protein intake, regular physical activity, proper hydration, and sufficient sleep, offers better long-term results than extreme dietary measures. Physical exercise builds muscle mass, which increases metabolic rate and supports sustainable fat loss—something diet alone cannot fully achieve. In conclusion, a no-alcohol lifestyle can strongly support weight loss, while a temporary low-carb approach may provide an initial boost in shedding excess weight. However, completely cutting carbs is neither necessary nor the healthiest path to lasting results. Sustainable weight management is built on balance, consistency, and lifestyle changes rather than strict elimination rules. Choosing healthier carbs, avoiding alcohol, staying active, and practicing mindful eating remain the most reliable strategies for achieving lasting weight loss success.
Australian teenagers are adjusting to a major shift in daily life as the country’s new restrictions on social media use by minors officially take effect. The policy, aimed at protecting young people’s mental health and online safety, limits access to popular platforms for users below a set age, requiring stricter age verification and parental consent.
For many teens, the change has sparked mixed reactions. Some describe feeling disconnected from friends and trends that once spread instantly through apps. Group chats, digital memes, and
Trump gives Nvidia green light to sell advanced AI chips to China
US President Donald Trump has announced that he will allow AI chip giant Nvidia to sell its advanced H200 chips to "approved customers" in China.
"We will protect National Security, create American Jobs, and keep America's lead in AI," Trump said on social media on Monday.
The decision will apply to other US chip companies like AMD and comes after extensive lobbying by Nvidia boss Jensen Huang, who visited Washington last week to drum up support.
Nvidia - both the world's leading chip firm and most valuable company - has found itself at the centre of a geopolitical tug-of-war between the US and China in recent months, and had been banned from selling its most advanced chips to Beijing.
Trump reversed the chip-selling ban in July, but demanded that Nvidia pay 15% of its Chinese revenues to the US government.
Beijing then reportedly ordered its tech companies to stop buying Nvidia chips manufactured for use in the Chinese market.
"We applaud President Trump's decision to allow America's chip industry to compete to support high paying jobs and manufacturing in America," Nvidia said in a statement provided to BBC News. Nvidia's H200 is a generation behind its Blackwell chip, which is considered to be the world's most advanced AI semiconductor.
Australian teens navigate new world without social media as ban takes effect
"It's a proud day to be prime minister of Australia," Anthony Albanese says as a world-first ban on social media accounts for under-16s comes into effect. Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Snapchat, Kick, Twitch, TikTok, Reddit and YouTube are among the platforms required to enforce the new legislation. An Australian teen shows the BBC her social media accounts as the ban comes into effect. Other affected teens have mixed views, with some "insulted" and others saying they'll "quickly get over it" - get in touch to let us know your thoughts. The government says the ban is aimed at protecting young people from harmful content, but critics suggest it could isolate vulnerable teenagers and push children into unregulated corners of the internet. This is a bold move that many other countries are watching carefully - but how the government will judge success is unclear, writes our Australia correspondent
social updates had become a central part of social interaction, and suddenly losing access has prompted a sense of disorientation. However, others say the ban is bringing unexpected benefits. Students report spending more time on in-person conversations, sports, hobbies, and schoolwork. Teachers and parents have noticed improved focus in classrooms and more engagement at home. Without constant notifications and scrolling, teens say pressure to compare themselves to curated online images has eased. Experts believe the transition period will be challenging
but ultimately healthy. While online platforms offer creativity and community, they also expose young users to cyberbullying, harmful content, and addictive behaviors. The restrictions aim to strike a balance by encouraging offline connections while still allowing supervised digital communication. As teens adapt, the ban is reshaping how young Australians communicate, socialize, and unwind, marking the beginning of a different — and possibly healthier — digital era
Starbucks workers and unions in 10 countries to protest in support of US baristas
Starbucks workers and union members in England, Scotland and eight other countries are protesting on Wednesday in support of striking US employees, the company's US union told. Starbucks Workers United last month launched a strike, which the union said has expanded to 3,000 baristas in more than 100 US cities. Workers are pushing for better pay and staffing, and for the coffee chain to resolve hundreds of unfair labour practice claims. Starbucks said the strike affected less than 1% of the chain's shops, adding it had "no impact" on its overall business.
The international action will involve hundreds of workers and union supporters, Starbucks Workers United said. The coordinated global action is unlikely to directly affect the company financially. It comes as the US union tries to ramp up pressure on the chain after negotiations stalled.
In the UK, rallies organised by the union Unite are
set to take place in London, Norwich and Glasgow, the union said. Workers in Glasgow will join a work stoppage.
Coordinated demonstrations are also planned at Starbucks stores and offices in cities across Australia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Turkey. Also on Wednesday, baristas are gearing up to protest at the largest Starbucks in the world, in Chicago.
"Starbucks executives need to know: wherever Starbucks is, our picket lines will be there too," Diego Franco, a barista from Chicago, said in a statement. The company maintains that its pay and benefits are industry-leading, and that baristas continue to get more hours of work per week on average. Starbucks has in recent years faced consumer boycotts, a wave of new competitors and a customer backlash over high prices, as well as turmoil in its leadership ranks.

Skokie’s Bushra Amiwala believes in Giving back to the community that Nurtured Her
Bushra Amiwala, politician, activist and a candidate from Illinois’ 9th Congressional district began her activism at an age when most teenagers are still juggling weekend plans. A Skokie native, Amiwala, calls herself a proud immigrant and a daughter of the community. Born and brought up in Chicago suburbs, Bushra’s first foray into community activism started in her high school years. She was all of 19, when as a freshman at Chicago’s DePaul University when she announced her candidacy for a county wide office. In 2019, Bushra made history when she was elected to the Skokie School District 73.5 Board of Education. She had a stupendous four years in office where she introduced many important and inclusive changes such as offering Halal, Kosher and Vegetarian food options for all students in the school district and offering access to after school programming to students
free of charge. In 2023, Amiwala created history again when she was re-elected as she ran unopposed. Her experiences as a member on the school board solidified her belief that true activism comes from representing the communities that raised her. Encouraged by the positive response Amiwala has been getting, she is now running for Congress and is confident that the community that welcomed her with open arms would help her live her vision of making her district an even better place for its residents.
Immigrant Roots
Bushra Amiwala takes great pride in her immigrant roots and believes that the hard work and sacrifices of her parents paved the way for her to understand empathy and provide opportunities for everyone who is ready to work hard and contribute to America. Talking about her parents, Bushra says, “My dad arrived from Karachi with just a $20 bill on him. He worked every job from bussing to driving a taxi to flipping burgers until he finally opened a clothing store. My mom came when she

got married to my dad and both my parents began a new life in this country.”
Bushra spent her growing up years in the north side of Chicago and went to Niles High School. The family moved to Skokie when she was 9 and has called this side of the city her home since then. Talking about her school years, she says, “I had a very vibrant experience. I attended Chicago Public Schools and even though there weren’t many desis I grew up around a lot
The Vision On her key campaign promises, Amiwala says universal healthcare and a clear path for citizenship. Amiwala was also particularly active in the community during recent ICE raids in Chicago. In fact, she says “The amount of volunteer and community support they were able to get from Skokie goes on to prove that Skokie could be a blueprint for America on what to do if ICE comes to town.”
As soon as President Trump assumed office, beginning of this year, there were palpable indications that anti-immigrant rhetoric would be on a rise. While activists and immigrants both prepped up for a hostile immigration discourse, what began unfolding was both unprecedented and shocking. As early as in January of this year, there was a major announcement of a large-scale ICE activity in Chicago. While back then, no one knew the scale or extent of the operation, many activists on ground in the Chicagoland area wasted no time on getting organized and mobilizing the communities for ICE raids. Bushra Amiwala says, “It was the rapid response of community volunteers and activists that helped draft a communal strategy that not only helped immigrant neighbors but also informed small businesses on what to do if ICE comes calling.”

of Hispanics, and so many people thought I was a Mexican growing up. I would say, I wasn’t very hyper aware of my identity.”
Even though Amiwala, a South Asian Muslim, grew up in a post 9/11 world she says she did not encounter a negative perception from the community she was in. She says, “It was volunteering in high school and that is when I began learning the issues that were important for the community.”
Activism Begins
Bushra recalls that when Donald Trump was campaigning for his first term she could not ignore that antiimmigrant rhetoric. It was during this
She says, “This was barely months after Trump began his first term and installed a Muslim ban.” She adds, “I knew that I had to stand up and work towards creating a more emphatic, inclusive society.” Even though Bushra did not win in her first run, which was against an experienced Democratic incumbent with 16 years behind him, she said when someone asked her if she would ever run for office again, her reply was a firm no. But then something unthinkable happened, the candidate Bushra lost to, called her and offered her support saying that she still created history by mobilizing thousands of voters as a 19-year-old and standing second.”

Trump Warns India Over Rice Dumping Tariffs
US President Donald Trump has warned that he may introduce new tariffs on agricultural imports, especially on rice imports from India and fertiliser from Canada, as trade talks with both countries continue without major progress. Trump made the remarks during a meeting at the White House where he unveiled a multi-billion-dollar farm relief package for American farmers while sharpening his criticism of agricultural imports from India and other Asian suppliers. The Republican leader claimed imports were challenging domestic producers and reiterated his intent to address the issue by using tariffs aggressively to protect American producers. He said the administration would direct "$12 billion in economic assistance to American farmers", funded by tariff revenues the US is collecting from trading partners. "We're really taking in trillions of dollars, if you think about it," Trump said, adding that countries "took advantage of us like nobody's ever seen."

A $30 million settlement is likely between the San Diego city government and the family of 16-yearold Kona Wilson, who was fatally shot by police in January 2025, according to city officials and court filings. Family lawyer Nick Rolley said the officer made the decision to shoot within a single second of seeing the teen run, without assessing the situation or giving commands.
The proposed settlement will be discussed by the San Diego City Council on December 9, with payment expected to come from the city’s public liability fund. If approved, it would exceed the $27 million settlement paid to George Floyd’s family in 2020.

TV Made Me ‘Lazy’

Kapil revealed he was equally fit during his 2017 film Firangi, but its failure meant no one noticed. He said his current focus on fitness is driven by personal discipline rather than film requirements. “TV makes you lazy,” Kapil admitted, adding there’s no strict physical benchmark on television as long as work continues. “You’re often just sitting on the sofa – ‘ek dhele ki mehnat nahin hoti wahan pe.’ Your mind works, but the body doesn’t get the workout it needs.” He also shared that Yo Yo Honey Singh gifted him the film’s song Phurr, requesting only that it be shot in Dubai, where the singer also appeared.

Chawla’s concerns go beyond buying patterns. She cautions against linking personal identity with material possessions. “When one starts to identify one’s worth with what one owns or wears, it can lead to shallow living,” she says, reiterating that the old value of “simple living and high thinking” still holds weight today.

In 2024, Russia supplied about 36% of India’s crude imports — roughly 1.8 million barrels per day — though volumes have recently dipped under diplomatic pressure. The two leaders discussed developments in Ukraine, with Modi reiterating India’s call for peace. They also announced an economic cooperation program through 2030, covering jobs, health, shipping and chemicals. Bilateral trade reached $68.7 billion in 2024-25, while defence ties continue amid India’s push to diversify arms suppliers.
India-Russia Target $100B Trade: Putin
New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin's official visit to India has had a huge impact not only on defence, but on trade ties as well between the two longtime friends. After holding talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, Putin announced both nations are looking at increasing annual bilateral trade volume to $100 billion.
While it is a challenging target, it is not something that's beyond reach, analysts have said. India is already a valued customer of Russian crude, much to the annoyance of the US.
UK Home Office Launches
Crackdown on Illegal Delivery Riders
HiIndia Newsdesk
London: The UK Home Office has launched a major enforcement drive against delivery riders working illegally, targeting individuals without valid immigration status or those breaching visa rules. Immigration Enforcement teams arrested 171 riders in November 2025 alone, with 60 already deported, the department confirmed. Many affected workers include foreign nationals, including Indians, some of whom entered legally but later overstayed, while others are studying on student visas yet working beyond permitted limits. Authorities warned that anyone found working illegally will face arrest and deportation.
171 Arrested in November, 60 Deported as Platforms and Employers Face Tighter Checks
Last week, Border Security Minister Alex Norris met representatives from Deliveroo, Just Eat, and Uber Eats to review steps to prevent illegal
employment. Investigations revealed that some riders were using borrowed or rented IDs, a practice reportedly facilitated through community networks. In response, delivery platforms have expanded facial recognition checks and developed systems to identify illegal working hotspots. The crackdown extends beyond major cities into rural areas and small towns, with spot arrests underway. Restaurants and retail outlets are also under scrutiny.
The newly approved Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill will mandate strict worker status checks. Employers who fail to verify staff documents risk up to five years in prison, fines of £60,000, and business closure.

Immigration Crackdown Reaches New Orleans
After enforcement drives in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Charlotte, U.S. federal immigration operations have now reached New Orleans, led by senior Border Patrol officer Greg Bovino. On Wednesday, federal agents were seen patrolling residential areas and outside Home Depot stores across the city.
Louisiana’s Republican governor welcomed the move, while immigrant communities in Democrat-run New Orleans expressed fear. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the operations are aimed at targeting violent criminals, though immigrant advocacy groups remain concerned. Reports indicate that similar drives have disproportionately targeted Latino communities, with many arrests made at grocery stores and public locations. In Charlotte, 370 people were detained during a recent crackdown, but only 44 had criminal records, federal officials acknowledged. Immigration attorneys in New Orleans have warned clients that individuals who “appear Hispanic” may be stopped randomly for ID checks. The Louisiana State Police and FBI’s New Orleans field office have confirmed full cooperation with federal agents during the ongoing enforcement operations.
IndiGo Cancels 550 Flights
New Delhi: In a record disruption for the 20-year-old airline, IndiGo cancelled more than 550 flights on Thursday, marking the third straight day of widespread operational chaos. The airline cited crew shortages, technology issues, winter congestion, and schedule adjustments as reasons for the cancellations, adding that more flights may be scrapped over the next two to three days. IndiGo operates around 2,300 daily flights but saw punctuality plunge to 19.7% on Wednesday. IndiGo admitted it underestimated crew needs after implementation of Phase 2 of new FDTL norms, causing roster gaps and staffing shortages, especially for night operations. IndiGo has sought exemptions for pilot rest and duty norms till February 10, 2026, related to its night duty flights for its A320 fleet.
“If US Has Right to Buy Our
Fuel, Then Why Shouldn't India?”: Putin on Tariffs
New Delhi:
Russian President Vladimir Putin questioned US pressure on India to stop buying Russian fuel, pointing out that Washington itself continues to purchase nuclear fuel from Moscow. Speaking to India Today on arrival for his two-day state visit, Putin said that if the US can legally buy Russian fuel for its nuclear plants, India should enjoy the same right to import energy from Russia. His visit comes amid Western sanctions over the Ukraine war and
India's crude imports are set to hit a three-year low this month following a punitive US tariff on Indian goods and a tightening of sanctions on Russia.
Gujarati Motel Faces Possible Shutdown in Fort Worth
HiIndia Newsdesk
Fort Worth, Texas: A Gujarati-owned motel in Fort Worth may face strict action, including closure or a forced sale, due to ongoing allegations of illegal activity. During a December 2 City Council session, Code Compliance Director Brian Doughty listed the Eco Motel on East Lancaster Avenue as a crime hotspot under a new enforcement pilot program.
Records show that from January 2024 to October 2025, police responded to 478 emergency calls from the motel, with 16 serious crimes, including violent assaults, reported. The property has also been repeatedly linked to alleged prostitution activity. The motel is run by RMP Hospitality LLC, owned by Gujarati businessman Shetal Patel. A woman died from an overdose in July 2025, and a man was found dead on November 20. Residents have filed complaints for years over safety issues. Previous city lawsuits were dropped after promises of improvement. In October 2025, nonprofit Act for Justice filed a new lawsuit calling the motel a public nuisance. A January 2026 court hearing will determine if an injunction leads to closure or sale.
mounting calls for India to reduce Russian oil purchases. India, however, remains the largest buyer of seaborne Russian crude due to discounted pricing. While Indian imports are expected to dip slightly this month following US tariffs and tighter sanctions, Putin said oil trade with India is “running smoothly.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Putin at the airport ahead of summit talks, where multiple agreements across defence, energy, infrastructure, and trade are expected to be announced.

Union City, New Jersey:
An American became an overnight millionaire after buying a Mega Millions ticket worth $90 million from a store owned by Gujarati businessman Krish Patel in Union City. The winning ticket was sold at Patel’s Bergenline Avenue store, which he has operated since 2014. This marks New Jersey’s eighth Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot ticket since 2018. As per lottery rules, the selling retailer receives a bonus commission, and
Patel’s store will earn $30,000. Patel said he learned about the jackpot win
around 6:30 am after the results were announced.
The winner’s identity has not yet been disclosed. Although the jackpot total is $90 million, the lottery said the cash
payout option is approximately $41 million if the winner chooses a onetime payment instead of annual installments. Stores selling winning tickets often see a surge in customers, as players consider them “lucky,” leading to increased sales beyond lottery purchases. Under New Jersey law, only licensed retailers can sell tickets to players aged 18 and above. Winners have one year to claim prizes. Amounts under $599.50 can be redeemed at authorized stores, while prizes over $600 require claims through lottery

Late-2025 Data Reveals ICE Arrested Tens of Thousands Nationwide
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest activity has increased significantly under the current administration. Data from late 2025 indicates that tens of thousands of individuals were booked into ICE detention each month, with daily arrest averages exceeding 800. Notably, a substantial share of those arrested did not have serious criminal records, underscoring a broader enforcementfocused approach alongside ongoing deportation initiatives and targeted operations against specific criminal groups.
Recent Arrest Statistics (Late 2025 / Early 2026)
• Monthly Detention Bookings
In October 2025 alone, more than 41,000 individuals were booked into ICE detention facilities. Of these, approximately 36,000 arrests were directly carried out by ICE, reflecting a marked escalation in enforcement activity.
• Daily Arrest Averages
Since January 20, 2025, ICE arrests have averaged 824 per day, representing a significant increase compared to arrest levels reported throughout 2024.
• Total Arrests (Fiscal Year 2024)
During FY 2024, ICE recorded a total of 149,070 arrests, providing a baseline that highlights the accelerated enforcement pace observed in late 2025.
Key Enforcement Actions and Operations
• Expanded Enforcement Operations
ICE conducted several large-scale enforcement surges during this period. One notable example is “Operation Dirtbag” in Florida, which took place in November 2025. This operation resulted in the arrest of over 150
individuals identified as sex offenders and more than 230 criminal illegal aliens overall, reflecting ICE’s continued focus on targeted criminal enforcement initiatives.
• Shift Toward Non-Criminal Arrests Despite these targeted operations, available data shows that a significant majority of detainees—approximately 72% as of mid-2025—had no criminal convictions. This trend highlights a substantial increase in non-criminal arrests, including pronounced enforcement activity in major metropolitan areas such as Chicago, raising questions about enforcement priorities and broader immigration policy implications.

Bay Area Devotees Remember Sikh Guru’s Sacrifice on 350th Martyrdom Anniversary
Jeevan Zutshi, founder of the Indo-American Community Federation (IACF), delivered remarks on Guru Tegh Bahadurji’s unparalleled commitment to protecting the religious rights of all communities. He emphasized how the Guru’s refusal to convert to Islam and his ultimate martyrdom represented not just Sikh values, but a universal stand against oppression and intolerance.
MILPITAS, CA – More than 200 community members gathered at the India Community Center on November 30 to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadurji, the ninth Sikh Guru, whose supreme sacrifice in 1675 stands as a timeless symbol of the defense of religious freedom. Guru Tegh Bahadurji gave his life resisting forced conversion under the Mughal regime, becoming an enduring beacon of courage, compassion, and spiritual steadfastness.
The evening began with soulful Shabad Kirtan rendered by Dr. Charan Kanwal Singh and Reshma Singh, setting a reflective and devotional tone for the commemorative event. Their moving recitation paid homage to the Guru’s teachings and reminded attendees of his message of peace and universal human rights.

Says Covid Shot Led to Kids’ Deaths
WASHINGTON, DC – Dr. Vinay Prasad, the FDA’s vaccine chief, sparked a political and scientific uproar after circulating an internal memo claiming at least ten children had died “after and because of” receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. The memo, first reported by The New York Times and later scrutinized by CBS News, offered no data, methodology, or case details. CBS reported that Prasad linked the deaths to myocarditis but did not provide ages, medical histories, or evidence of causation, and noted that no findings had been peer-reviewed. Experts reiterated that myocarditis risk is far higher after COVID-19 infection than after vaccination. Scientists said the memo contradicted extensive published research, including 2023 pediatric cardiology studies showing vaccine-associated myocarditis is typically milder and has better outcomes than infection-related cases. Experts also noted that risk drops when doses are spaced a year

apart and is negligible if children complete the primary series before age five. Current FDA data list about eight myocarditis cases per million doses in people under 65.
Prasad’s memo arrived amid political tensions over COVID-19 vaccination.
Under HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., FDA appointees have restricted Moderna and Novavax authorizations, and the CDC’s reconstituted ACIP shifted to emphasizing personal choice over universal recommendations—a move criticized by major medical groups, which continue urging vaccination for children and for everyone six months and older. Several states have since adopted their own guidance. Prasad, who joined the Trump administration after criticizing earlier pandemic policy, faced heavy political pressure this summer. He was removed on July 29 after far-right figures, including Laura Loomer, accused him of insufficient alignment on drug approvals and questioned his past statements.
20-minute presentation on Guru Tegh Bahadurji’s life, focusing on his moral courage during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, a period marked by widespread religious persecution. Uphaar Kotru, President of the Kashmiri Overseas Association, offered heartfelt gratitude to the Sikh community for their support of Kashmiri Pandits during the early 1990s. He recounted how Sikhs opened their doors, providing shelter and compassion during one of the most difficult chapters in Kashmiri history.
Attendees described the event as uplifting and deeply meaningful—a powerful reminder of Guru Tegh Bahadurji’s enduring message: “Fear none and frighten none.”
The commemoration was organized by the IndoAmerican Community Federation (IACF), cohosted by The Avanti Foundation, and supported by the Association of Indo-Americans.
Ro Khanna Leads Push for DoJ to Keep Epstein Files Release on Schedule
WASHINGTON, DC – Reps. Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie are leading a bipartisan push urging the Justice Department to brief Congress by Dec. 5 on any new information that could delay the release of longawaited Epstein case files.
In a letter to Attorney General Pamela Bondi, the lawmakers — joined by Sens. Jeff Merkley, Lisa Murkowski, and Ben Ray Luján — asked for clarity on any evidence or procedural hurdles that could affect the department’s ability to meet the Dec. 19 disclosure deadline mandated by Congress, Roll Call reported. Their request comes as President Donald Trump faces renewed political pressure after amplifying Epsteinrelated conspiracy theories during the campaign. His attempts to shift attention toward prominent Democrats, including Bill Clinton and Larry Summers, have not eased criticism from his base.
The law, passed overwhelmingly despite initial White House resistance, requires the DOJ to release all records, documents, communications, and investigative materials related to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell within 30 days of enactment.

FBI Offers $50K Reward in NJ Double Murder Case
NEW YORK, NY- The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Nazeer Hameed, an Indian national charged with the 2017 murders of Sasikala Narra, 38, and her six-year-old son Anish in Maple Shade, New Jersey.
Authorities say Hameed, now 38, left the United States for India about six months after the killings and has remained there since. He is listed on the FBI’s Most Wanted website, and a state warrant has been issued for his arrest.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said he recently contacted Indian Ambassador Vinay Kwatra by phone and letter seeking India’s cooperation in extraditing Hameed. Murphy noted the state is working with India’s Ministries of External and Home Affairs, as well as U.S. federal agencies, to move the process forward under the bilateral treaty.
In February, Hameed was charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder, two counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office (BCPO).

New USCIS Center Aims to Improve Immigration Screening and Detect Fraud
WASHINGTON, DC -U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the creation of a new Vetting Center, headquartered in Atlanta, to strengthen screening of foreign nationals who may pose national security or public safety threats or have committed fraud. The center will centralize enhanced vetting, use advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, and draw on intelligence and law-enforcement resources to review pending and previously approved immigration cases, with priority given to countries of concern.
USCIS Director Joseph B. Edlow said the center is a key step in protecting national security, adding that the Trump administration has shifted away from expedited processing toward stronger safeguards against fraud and threats.

A breakthrough came when a blood droplet at the scene was found to match Hameed’s DNA, obtained from his work laptop after earlier attempts through Indian authorities failed.
Hegseth
Faces Impeachment Over Boat Bombing Probe
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) is drawing renewed attention as he considers escalating his clash with the Trump administration by filing articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Thanedar told Axios he is weighing the move following reports that Hegseth authorized a second lethal strike on a suspected drugrunning vessel—an attack that killed survivors of an initial assault. Thanedar, who has already introduced multiple impeachment articles against President Donald Trump this year, said he believes Hegseth poses a national security threat. In a post on X, he labeled the secretary of defense “utterly incompetent, totally reckless, and a serious danger,” asserting that impeachment is necessary. Controversy surrounding Hegseth intensified after a Washington Post investigation alleged he personally ordered U.S. forces to kill all individuals aboard a narcotics-linked vessel during a September operation. The first strike reportedly left survivors in the water, prompting Hegseth to direct a second attack.
Indian-American Representatives Visit Israel Following October 7 Terror Massacre
CHICAGO, IL — A 15-member IndianAmerican (Hindu) delegation from Chicago visited Israel on a five-day educational and diplomatic tour at the invitation of the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Traveling through Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, and several key institutions, the delegation gained firsthand exposure to Israel’s innovation ecosystem, security realities, and the extraordinary resilience of its people.
The most emotional and impactful moment of the visit was the delegation’s tour of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack site near the Gaza border. At this location, Islamic terrorists brutally murdered approximately 1,200 innocent civilians— including babies, unborn children, women, men, and the elderly. Nearly 5,500 Islamic terrorists, along with approximately 1,500 additional infiltrators, carried out coordinated acts of violence that included burning homes, destroying more than 1,650 vehicles and ambulances, attacking a music festival, and committing horrific atrocities, including sexual violence. Delegates described the devastation as “beyond imagination.”
The group met with survivors who shared deeply traumatic personal accounts. One survivor, Adam, described scenes of burning vehicles, trapped civilians, and overwhelming destruction. His testimony resonated deeply with members of the

delegation, drawing painful parallels to tragedies faced by Hindus in India—such as the 2001 Godhra train burning in Gujarat, where 59 innocent Hindus were burned alive, and the recent Pahelgam killings in Kashmir, where 26 Hindu men were brutally murdered by jihadists after their religious identity was identified.
Delegates noted a disturbing pattern of religiously motivated violence that, they said, has persisted for decades with inadequate global attention.
Adam warned that such extremist threats are not confined by borders, emphasizing that Americans must remain vigilant as global Islamic terrorism has escalated in the decades since 9/11.
Delegate Hemant Patel underscored that violence on this scale does not
emerge suddenly but is the result of long-term radicalization, indoctrination, and the glorification of martyrdom— often beginning in childhood with promises of heavenly reward. He noted that many attackers knowingly undertook suicide missions, making October 7 the second-largest mass killing of Jews since the Holocaust. Citing global terrorism monitoring sources, Patel noted that more than 48,500 terrorist attacks have occurred worldwide since 9/11, including hundreds in Israel, the United States, and thousands in India.
Patel urged critics of Israel’s response to visit the attack site before forming judgments and called on global institutions, including the United Nations, to confront the root causes of extremist radicalization, particularly the indoctrination of hatred. “Terrorists die to kill innocents; Israeli soldiers die to protect them. That difference defines the moral truth,” he said.
The delegation expressed gratitude to the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Consul General Delphine Gamburg, and Coordinator Daniella Rozen for their guidance and exceptional hospitality. Delegates described the visit as “unforgettable and profoundly educational,” noting that it strengthened U.S.–Israel–India relations and deepened Jewish–Hindu ties while reinforcing the urgent need to confront rising global extremism.

Amiwala Celebrates Evening of Action With Nearly 100 Volunteers
“Bushra understands the challenges of our generation like no other candidate does,” said volunteer Evan Arvizu. “Right now we’re facing the worst housing shortage in our nation’s history. We’re on the precipice of climate catastrophe, and millions of people are losing their health insurance. No one is better equipped to take on these issues than Bushra.”
SKOKIE, IL. — Congressional candidate Bushra Amiwala welcomed nearly a hundred volunteers to her campaign headquarters on Tuesday night, celebrating the strong momentum her campaign has built in recent weeks.
It was the largest volunteer gathering held by any candidate in the district to date.
“Look around this room. Every age, race, gender, ethnic background, and geographic part of the district is represented,” said Amiwala, an elected school board member. “Every single person in this room has a story.
Everyone here has a direct tie to our district and to our movement. That is the type of people-powered campaign we are running. It is relationship-driven.
It is built on policy and solutions. I cannot do this alone, and I’m so grateful that all of you are with me.”
Amiwala was joined by Miracle Jenkins, a former IL09 candidate and lead organizer for Bernie Sanders, who recently endorsed her campaign.
“I’m happy to endorse Bushra,” Jenkins said. “Bushra understands, much like Zohran Mamdani, that the core issue of our day is affordability.
It’s making sure that young Americans like ourselves are able to buy a home.
We’re not here to pursue half measures. We’re here to pass aggressive policies that move America forward.”
Guests enjoyed dinner from Pita Inn and cupcakes courtesy of Kinza’s Cakes.
The event also marked the launch of major phonebanking, text-banking, and canvassing efforts to reach voters throughout the district.
“Bushra understands the challenges of our generation like no other candidate does,” said volunteer Evan
Arvizu.
“Right now we’re facing the worst housing shortage in our nation’s history. We’re on the precipice of climate catastrophe, and millions of people are losing their health insurance. No one is better equipped to take on these issues than Bushra.”
Everyone in attendance had the chance to sign up for volunteer opportunities. To view upcoming activities and get involved.
“There’s not much to be optimistic about in this news cycle. But I feel optimistic today,” said volunteer Zayd Islam. “I can’t remember the last time I felt this hopeful about an election. Bushra has a vision to make life better in our home. She’s reminding us that the authoritarian dystopia of this administration does not have to be our future.”
Court Rejects Injury Lawsuit Filed by Passenger on Delta Flight to India
WASHINGTON, DC- A U.S. federal court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by India-bound passenger Sarala Nair against Delta Air Lines, ruling that her claim was filed too late under the Montreal Convention, the international treaty that governs airline liability for injuries on international flights. Nair was traveling from Detroit to Mumbai via Paris on February 3, 2023, when she alleged that a bag fell from an overhead bin and struck her on the head as Delta personnel assisted another passenger. Her itinerary showed a scheduled arrival in Mumbai on February 5, 2023.
Nair filed her lawsuit on June 20, 2025. However, Article 35 of the Montreal Convention requires such claims to be filed within two years of the aircraft’s scheduled arrival. Because the deadline expired on February 5, 2025, the court
held that her case was untimely in an order dated December 2.
The case attracted attention among Indian travelers in the U.S. because the incident occurred on a long-haul Detroit–Mumbai service frequently used by Indian Americans. According to the Passenger Name Record cited in the ruling, Nair was seated in 55C when a bag fell from an
overhead bin and struck her head. An onboard physician examined her, and the captain determined she required emergency medical attention. She was removed from the aircraft at the Detroit gate and transported to a hospital. In her complaint, Nair sought damages for alleged injuries to her skeletal, nervous, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal systems, as well as
damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, bones, and tissues in her head, back, neck, and other parts of her body. Delta removed the case to federal court, arguing that the Montreal Convention exclusively governs such claims. U.S. District Judge Robert J. White agreed, ruling that the treaty preempted all state-law negligence claims arising from injuries on international flights.
The court also rejected Nair’s arguments that discovery was premature, that falling luggage did not constitute an “accident,” and that emotional distress placed her claim outside the treaty’s scope. The judge cited longstanding precedent holding that items falling from overhead bins qualify as unexpected or unusual external events under Article 17 of the Convention.
The Montreal Convention binds the United States, India, and nearly all major aviation nations, establishing uniform rules for passenger injury claims.

Blankets, Clothing, and Compassion: Long Beach Event Supports Hundreds
LONG BEACH, CA — What began as a simple call for help evolved into a powerful display of community unity and compassion.
When Dr. Manorama Gupta, President of the Global Peace Foundation, organized a drive to collect gently used clothing and blankets for those in need in Long Beach, the community responded with overwhelming generosity. Residents donated men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, along with several dozen blankets—filling more than 25 oversized garden bags.
The collected items were distributed at
Martin Luther King Park on November 23, where volunteers set up four large tables overflowing with clothing. The tables were replenished multiple times throughout the day, ensuring that everyone who arrived could find something they needed.
Approximately 200 individuals and families attended. Many came carrying bags to gather essentials, while children happily helped sort items. Volunteers worked hand in hand with attendees, creating an atmosphere of warmth, dignity, and shared humanity that truly reflected the spirit of the season.
“These donations are more than just clothes,” said Dr. Gupta. “They are reminders that no one in our community is alone. Every jacket, every sweater, every blanket carries hope and dignity for someone who needs it.”
Organizers expressed their deep gratitude to everyone who contributed, noting that acts of kindness like this strengthen the bonds within a community. They hope the impact of this event inspires continued generosity throughout the holidays and into the New Year.

The technology automatically identifies eligible OTC items in a shopper’s basket. Once the shopper taps their NationsBenefits Flex Card, the system instantly recognizes approved products, ensuring a smooth, friction-free checkout experience for both clerks and customers.
Eligible items that members can now purchase at NRS locations include
healthy foods and produce, vitamins and minerals, first-aid and medical supplies, non-prescription pain relievers, cold/flu/allergy medications, dental care, digestive aids, eye and ear care, personal and skin-care items, and more.
“This partnership enables more personalized touchpoints that unite retail, healthcare, and fintech, creating a smoother and more tailored member experience,” said Michael Parker, Co-CEO of NationsBenefits. “By enhancing the way people shop, we can ultimately help inspire healthier behaviors and improved outcomes.”
For independent store owners, the ability to accept OTC benefits delivers a meaningful competitive advantage—capturing sales that may have otherwise gone to larger corporate chains.
“Simplicity is at the core of everything we do,” said Josh Korman, Director of Business Development at NRS.
“This partnership delivers a one-tap solution that removes operational friction. Cashiers no longer need to sort products or make eligibility guesses; the NRS POS automates the entire redemption process, allowing store owners to focus on serving their patrons while expanding their payment options.”

FDA Seizes 7-OH Opioids to Protect American Consumers
WASHINGTON, DC- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, working with the Department of Justice, announced today that the U.S. Marshals Service has seized approximately 73,000 units of 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) products—worth an estimated $1 million—from three Missouri-based firms.
The seized items included liquid shots, tablets, and other food and dietary supplement products containing concentrated 7-OH, an ingredient increasingly recognized for its potential for abuse due to its ability to bind to opioid receptors. 7-OH cannot be legally added to dietary supplements or conventional foods, and such products are considered adulterated because the ingredient does not meet federal safety standards. The FDA has not approved 7-OH for any medical use.
“This enforcement action is a strong
step to protect Americans from the dangers of concentrated 7-OH products, which are potent opioids,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “We must be proactive and vigilant to address emerging threats to our communities and our kids.”
The FDA collaborated with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services on this operation, which aligns with the agency’s broader efforts to curb dangerous and illegal opioid substances. Earlier this July, the FDA recommended scheduling certain 7-OH products under the Controlled Substances Act and issued warning letters to companies distributing 7-OH-containing items such as tablets, gummies, drink mixes, and shots. The agency also alerted health care professionals and consumers about the risks associated with concentrated 7-OH.
“The rise in the use of concentrated 7-OH as an illegal ingredient in foods and dietary supplements is of particular concern for the FDA,” said Kyle Diamantas, J.D., FDA Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods. “Today’s actions signal that we will not tolerate the use of this dangerous ingredient in products accessible to the public—especially to our nation’s youth.”

Oakton College Lunabotics Team Achieves Top National Ranking, Advances to NASA 2026 Competition
Oakton College’s Lunabotics Team has launched itself to the top spot nationwide, earning first place for its Project Management Plan (PMP) and securing an invitation to the 2026 NASA Lunabotics Challenge. The team ranked No. 1 among 73 schools that applied to take part in the prestigious competition. Only 50 teams were selected, including powerhouses such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). “It’s a really good feeling,” said team member Rhys Bangeman, a Maine South High School graduate. “Some people initially scoffed at the idea of a community college competing in Lunabotics. Oakton once placed second overall, and now we’ve earned top recognition. It proves that community college students can compete with — and even impress — four-year universities and NASA.”
Oakton has participated in the NASA Lunabotics Challenge since 2012, earning a second-place national finish in 2016. This latest honor is especially significant, marking a strong return after a two-year pause that required the team to rebuild its project entirely from scratch.
“I want to congratulate the Oakton Lunabotics team and Engineering instructor Andrew Eloff on this stellar achievement,” said Jim Rabchuk, Oakton’s Dean of STEM. “Placing first against major research universities
Nick Fuentes Doubles Down on Anti-Indian American Rhetoric
WASHINGTON, DC – Provocative right-wing commentator Nick Fuentes is now urging that India be added to President Donald Trump’s list of nineteen nations facing a full suspension of U.S. immigration visas. Fuentes — an extremist figure with a long record of inflammatory rhetoric about minorities and frequently described by Democratic critics as a neo-Nazi — made the demand days after a shooting near the White House. The incident involved an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome and allegedly opened fire on two National Guard soldiers, prompting the Department of Homeland Security to impose sweeping visa restrictions.

Illlinois Calls Out ICE Over Illegal license Plate Swaps on Rental Cars
CHICAGO, IL -Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has warned national rental car companies that they could be held liable for federal immigration agents illegally swapping license plates on rental vehicles. In late October, his office notified companies including ACE, Alamo, Avis, Budget and Enterprise after receiving multiple reports that ICE agents were altering plates to disguise enforcement vehicles. Giannoulias said his office has fielded

The team now prepares for its next milestone: submission of its Systems Engineering Paper by April 2. Oakton will compete at the University of Central Florida May 12–17, with top teams advancing to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Artemis Arena May 19–21.
NJ Gas Prices Rising Faster Than Expected
NEW JERSEY -Gas prices in New Jersey will rise again on Jan. 1, with a 4.2-cent increase per gallon, according to the state Treasury Department. The total tax rate will reach 49.1 cents per gallon for gasoline and 56.1 cents for diesel, after a smaller 2.6-cent hike earlier in 2025.
Officials say the increase is needed to fund the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF), which must generate $11 billion by 2029 to support major roadway and bridge projects. To meet that mandate—paired with declining fuel consumption—the state is adjusting the Petroleum Products Gross Receipt Tax. Gas taxes were reduced in 2022 and 2023 but have climbed again since 2024. New Jersey now has the eighthhighest gas prices in the nation, behind Maryland and ahead of Virginia.

NYC Mayor Urges Immigrants to Know ICE Rights
NEW YORK
(AP) — New York
City Mayor-elect
Zohran Mamdani released a video on Sunday urging immigrants to learn their legal rights when approached by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following a recent federal raid in Manhattan.
Vowing to protect the city’s nearly 3 million immigrants, Mamdani said, “We can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights.” In the video shared on social media, he explained that individuals have the right to remain silent, refuse to answer questions, and decline consent for ICE agents to enter private spaces such as homes, schools or restricted workplace areas unless agents present a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
“New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight each and every day to protect, support, and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters.”
Mamdani also said residents may legally record ICE encounters as long as they do not interfere with enforcement actions. “ICE is legally allowed to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent,” he said, adding that anyone detained should repeatedly ask, “Am I free to go?” until officers respond. The message followed a protest last week
on Canal Street near New York’s Chinatown, where demonstrators gathered after ICE agents attempted to detain individuals. A similar immigration operation in the same area last October also triggered public protests. Mamdani, who will be sworn in as mayor on Jan. 1, reaffirmed his commitment to immigrant communities, saying, “New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight each and every day to protect, support, and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters.” His comments come amid stepped-up federal immigration enforcement in several U.S. cities under the Trump administration, including recent operations in New Orleans.
Alert Bank Teller Stops Phone Scam, Saves Woman Thousands
MISSOURI - A quick-thinking bank teller in Missouri is being credited with stopping a phone scam this week after a shaken woman attempted to withdraw thousands of dollars, believing she would be arrested for missing jury duty.
According to a Facebook post, the woman had been contacted by someone impersonating law-enforcement personnel, who claimed she faced immediate arrest unless she paid a cash bond. The scammer kept her on the phone and warned her not to speak to anyone—a common pressure tactic used to isolate victims and prompt hasty decisions. Recent reports indicate scammers have also begun instructing victims to convert cash into Bitcoin at ATMs. When the woman arrived at her bank to withdraw the money, a teller noticed she appeared distressed and discreetly wrote her a note that read, “You’re being scammed.”
The teller then refused to process the withdrawal, prompting the woman to end the call with the scammer. After learning more about the scheme from the teller, she contacted authorities to report the incident. before it causes harm.
