'I may do it,
I may not do it' - Trump on Iran strikes
As tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, President Donald Trump is weighing whether the US should join Israeli strikes, including the use of bunker-buster bombs on Iranian nuclear facilities. Despite pressure from Israeli PM Netanyahu and top US officials,
US Readies for Possible Iran Strike
Senior US officials are preparing for the possibility of a strike on Iran in the coming days, according to people familiar with the matter, a sign that Washington is assembling the infrastructure to directly enter a conflict with Tehran.
The situation is still evolving and could change, said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss private talks. Some of the people pointed to potential plans for a weekend strike. Top leaders at a handful of federal agencies have also begun getting ready for an attack, one person said.
Iran Warns US of 'Irreparable Damage' if It Intervenes
After warnings, ultimatums, and even a death threat by Israel's Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, Iran's Supreme Leader has spoken. "Never", he said responding to President Trump's call for an "unconditional surrender".
Addressing the people of Iran and sending a message to the enemy from his secret hideout, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader said, Tehran "will never surrender".
Trump remains cautious, emphasizing, “I may do it, I may not do it—nobody knows what I’m going to do.”
Trump is wary of dragging the US into another prolonged conflict, though he’s reviewed attack plans and believes decisive strikes wouldn’t necessarily mean full-scale war. Former ambassador David Friedman suggested limited bombings like MOAB drops could be effective without deep entanglement.
Key voices like CIA Director John Ratcliffe and CENTCOM commander Gen. Michael Kurilla have briefed Trump, with military assets being moved into the region. Allies have urged restraint, warning of Iranian retaliation and risks to global oil routes. Iran has vowed to retaliate if attacked, while US officials debate if limited strikes could avoid long-term consequences. Trump, recalling the Soleimani strike model, insists his only goal is preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. “We’re the only ones who can stop it,” he said, “but that doesn’t mean we will. I don’t want a long-term war.”
Texas Instruments to make 'historic' $60bn US chip investment
Computer chip giant Texas Instruments (TI) will invest more than $60bn (£44.74bn) in the US, as President Donald Trump pressures big technology firms to increase manufacturing in the country.
The company said it plans to build or expand seven chip-making facilities at three sites in Texas and Utah, and create 60,000 jobs. TI did not give a detailed timeline for the investment.
The Dallas-based firm described the move as the "largest investment in foundational semiconductor manufacturing in US history." It follows similar announcements from others manufacturing semiconductors, including Micron, which said last week that it would increase its planned spending in the US to $200bn.
Seven California men charged in
'largest jewellery heist' in US history
Seven men from California have been charged in the "largest jewellery heist in US history", involving the theft of $100m (£75m) worth of gold, gems, and luxury watches.
The heist has been a mystery in California for nearly three years after a Brinks company truck transporting the jewellery was robbed at a remote stop as one driver slept inside, and another was having a meal.
The suspects tracked the truck as it left a jewellery show near San Francisco with 73 bags, officials said. The next morning, they stole 24 bags when the truck was at a rest stop in Lebec, California, according to court documents.
Trump Tightens Social Media Checks for Foreign Students
WASHINGTON: - President Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday ordered the resumption of student visa appointments but will significantly tighten its social media vetting in a bid to identify any applicants who may be hostile towards the United States, according to an internal State Department cable reviewed by Reuters. U.S. consular officers are now required to conduct a "comprehensive and thorough vetting" of all student and exchange visitor applicants to identify those who "bear hostile attitudes toward our citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles," said the cable, which was dated June 18 and sent to U.S. missions on Wednesday.
Trump Hosts Pak Army Chief: White House Statement
US President Donald Trump hosted Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, for a luncheon at the White House amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. The meeting is seen as strategically significant, as Pakistan shares a long border with Iran. Trump hinted at possible military action against Tehran, stating, “I may do it, I may not.”
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly noted Munir had earlier praised Trump for averting a nuclear war between India and Pakistan, even calling for a Nobel Peace Prize for the US President. Trump echoed this, saying he “loves Pakistan” and also called Indian PM Modi “fantastic.”

The latest layoffs follow Microsoft's previous round of job cuts in May, which affected about 6,000 employees.
The tech giant has ramped up its investments in AI, aiming to solidify its leadership as companies across industries accelerate the integration of AI into their products and services to maintain a competitive edge.

Air India Reduces International Services On Wide-Body Aircraft By 15%
New Delhi: Air India has reduced its international services on wide-body aircraft by 15 per cent for the next few weeks. The decision comes after the tragic loss of 241 lives on board Air India-171 flight, which crashed in Ahmedabad. According to an official statement by Air India, the cuts will be implemented between June 18 and 20, and will continue until at least mid-July. The decision has been taken to add to the airlines' reserve aircraft availability to take care of any unplanned disruptions.
Air India has given its passengers a choice to either reschedule their travel without any cost or to be given a full refund, while the airline is attempting to accommodate its international passengers on alternate flights.
The revised schedule of Air India's international services, effective from June 20, will be shared shortly, said the official statement. Offering condolences to the families of the deceased in the plane crash, the airlines said, Air India is making efforts to support the family members of the deceased and the injured.
Air India Black Box Damaged, May Need Foreign Help
The 'black box' of Air India's Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane that crashed on June 12 in Ahmedabad has sustained damage and may have to be sent to the United States to continue the data extraction process, sources have said, adding that the government will take the final call.
The 'black box' from the doomed Air India flight was recovered Monday, 28 hours after the crash. The 'black boxes' are actually bright orange in colour to help locate them from debris and wreckage.
"Reason I Had Him Here Was...": Why Trump Hosted Pak Army Chief For Lunch
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday praised Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir for his role in preventing an escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan, as he hosted the latter for a lunch meeting at the White House. "Reason I had him here was I wanted to thank him for not going into the war and ending it..," Mr Trump said at the luncheon meeting. The lunch meeting was the first time a US president had hosted the powerful head of Pakistan's army, widely regarded as having sway over the country's national security policies, at the White House unaccompanied by senior Pakistani civilian officials.
It also came amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran with Mr Trump exploring Washington's possible involvement. Islamabad is known for its close ties with Tehran. The US President told reporters he thanked Mr Munir for ending the war with India last month, for which he also praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who he spoke to on Tuesday night.
Despite India's clear stance that the recent ceasefire with Pakistan was initiated solely through bilateral military communication, US President Donald Trump has once again claimed he "stopped the war" between the two nuclear powers. Speaking ahead of his meeting with Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir, Trump insisted, “I stopped the war between Pakistan and India,” and lamented that the media gave him no credit. He praised both PM Narendra Modi and Munir as being influential in halting hostilities. However, India has firmly rejected any notion of US mediation. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the ceasefire was requested by Pakistan and coordinated directly between the two countries’ military

leaderships. During a 35-minute phone call, PM Modi informed Trump that India’s Operation Sindoor — a response to the Pahalgam terror
attack — targeted only terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, and was deliberately non-escalatory.
India reiterated that no India-US trade discussions or third-party mediation were involved. “India does not and will never accept mediation,” said Misri, underlining a strong political consensus on the issue. Despite repeated clarifications from New Delhi, Trump has continued to link his influence and US trade policy to the de-escalation. He also suggested that just as he helped stop the India-Pakistan conflict, a deal between Iran and Israel could be similarly achieved.
New Delhi remains clear: the ceasefire was a direct bilateral decision, and Trump’s claims of brokering peace are not supported by the facts.

India Never Has, Never Will Accept Mediation on Pakistan Issue Modi to Trump
The strong statement follows Trump repeatedly claimng credit for negotiating the Op Sindoor ceasefire between India and Pakistan - which the government has denied.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi firmly told U.S. President Donald Trump that India has never accepted, and will never accept, third-party mediation on the issue of Pakistan's illegal occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The two leaders spoke late Tuesday while Modi was in Canada for the G7 Summit. Briefing the media, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the conversation April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. NEWS IN BRIEF
Trump To Meet Pak Army Chief Asim Munir
Washington:
US President Donald Trump will meet Pakistan's Army Chief, General Syed Asim Munir, who is in Washington on an official visit. The reports about the meeting came days after the White House denied inviting Munir to the US Army's 250th anniversary celebrations on June 14.
The Pakistani military leader will meet the US leader for lunch, scheduled to take place at 1:00 PM (Washington time) on Wednesday, in the White House's Cabinet Room, according to the president's daily public schedule.
Air India fleet with feet of clay 16 flights cancelled
Sixteen Air India flights were cancelled on Tuesday, exacerbating the airline’s most turbulent times since the Tata group took over its reins three and a half years ago. Of these, 13 were Boeing 787 Dreamliners, the broad model that crashed on June 12 in Ahmedabad, killing 241 on board.
The Prime Minister strongly reiterated India’s long-standing policy: mediation on the Kashmir issue is neither needed nor desired. This came in response to Trump’s repeated claims of having mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan and offering to negotiate a broader settlement — claims India has consistently denied. Modi also recalled his May 12 statement following the ceasefire, asserting that dialogue with Pakistan, if any, would only concern terrorism and the return of PoK. The timing of the phone call is significant, coming just before Trump’s scheduled White House lunch with Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Syed Asim Munir, who is also expected to meet top U.S. officials during his visit.
Modi also refuted claims that U.S. trade threats influenced the ceasefire, stating it was requested by Pakistan and arranged through existing military channels. Trump, according to Misri, appreciated India’s actions and invited Modi to visit the U.S. after the G7.
Modi Meets G7 Leaders, Talks Ties & Terrorism
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of bilateral meetings with his global counterparts on the margins of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, with discussions focusing on a range of issues such as trade, investment, counter-terrorism and global challenges.
Mr. Modi, who is in Kananaskis to attend the G7 Summit, Tuesday (June 17, 2025) said he had a "very good meeting" with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and the two countries seek to work together in sectors like commerce, investment, technology, green hydrogen, shipbuilding and more.
"Boosting India-Republic of Korea relations! PM @ narendramodi and President @Jaemyung_Lee of the Republic of Korea had a productive meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade and commerce, investment, technology, green hydrogen and more," the Prime Minister's office said in a post on X.
On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the United States knows the exact location of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is in hiding amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. Trump, in a social media post, called for Iran’s “unconditional surrender” as hostilities entered their fifth day.
“We know exactly where the so-called Supreme Leader is hiding,” Trump stated. “He’s an easy target, but we won’t take him out — at least not for now.” He warned Iran against launching attacks on civilians or American troops, saying U.S. patience is “wearing thin.”
Trump also urged the people of Tehran, a city of 9.5 million, to evacuate for their safety. The former president cut short his appearance at an international summit to return to Washington for emergency consultations with his national security team as tensions in the region intensify.
Iran says it will respond firmly if US becomes directly involved
A spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry issued a warning Wednesday that an American intervention in the ongoing Israeli strikes targeting his country would spark “an all-out war.”
Esmail Baghaei made the comments in an interview live on Al Jazeera English. It was his first in the ongoing conflict. Baghaei said: “Any American intervention would be a recipe for an all-out war in the region.”
President Trump initially distanced himself from Israel's attacks on Iran but has hinted at greater US involvement, saying he wants something 'much bigger' than a ceasefire
President Donald Trump initially distanced himself from Israel's attacks on Iran but has hinted at greater US involvement, saying he wants something “much bigger” than a ceasefire. The US has also sent more warplanes to the region. Thousands of Israelis stranded abroad. The conflict has disrupted flight patterns across the region. A televised message by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be aired shortly, Iran's state media reported on Wednesday.bKhamenei's last appearance was on Friday shortly after Israel attacked Iran. Israeli military strikes have hit two facilities in Iran that made parts for centrifuges, the machines that enrich uranium, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Wednesday. Shubman Gill, Team Get Praise for Strong Bowling in England Series
Renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle believes that the Indian cricket team bowling attack is currently stronger than their batting ahead of the five-match Test series against England. The side, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, will start their campaign in England on June 20. Bhogle, who will be heard on On Sony Sports Ten 1 & Ten 5 channels, said that India's batters are largely untested in English conditions and as a result, he believes that the bowlers are slightly ahead. However, he added that the series will be a golden opportunity for all the Indian batters to step up and prove their mettle as the side will be missing the star power and experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
"With India, I actually think the bowling is stronger at this stage. I hope they get to a stage where I am proved wrong and that the batting shines again - Yashasvi and Rahul have a great partnership, Gill gets into form, Pant gets back to the format he is best at. Look- I think, the No Virat Kohli situation… in the minds of many people, we had started getting

great players come in.. that is the one thing we must be excited about in this series…how are all these players going to take one step up in their career," Bhogle told . When it comes to India's bowling, Bhogle explained that Bumrah will make a huge difference in English conditions and even tipped the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna to perform well. "Largely because India' s batting is untested in these conditions. That is my view at the moment. I am waiting to be proven wrong.. it is the start of the series. Since Bumrah is around, even when he is not playing he will make a huge difference. I am very happy that you made a mention of the two names we do not talk about their stellar careers- Shami and Ashwin. In Siraj, another player we don't talk often about, may not be enough of a box office material, but he has been fantastic over the years. Prasidh Krishna is full of promise.. Bombay HC Orders BCCI to Pay Rs,538 Crore
The Bombay High Court has upheld the arbitral, directing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay Rs 538 crore to the now defunct IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Kochi Tuskers Kerala was terminated by the BCCI in 2011 after playing just one season. The BCCI had terminated the franchise after just one season (2011), accusing the team of a contract breach after failing to submit a bank guarantee on time, which was required under the agreement. "The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited. BCCI's endeavour to delve into the merits of the dispute, is in teeth of the scope of the grounds contained in Section 34 of the Act. BCCI's dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award," the court said in its ruling. In 2015, the BCCI was asked to pay Rs 550 crore -- 384 crore to KCPL and 153 crore to Rendenzvous sport -- to IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers after an arbitration ruled in favour of the team recently. The BCCI had challenged the tribunal's verdict in court.
MLC Season 3: Cricket Takes Root in American Soil
Dr Nilesh D Mehta
Now, with a new home at the historic Oakland Coliseum, something bigger is taking shape. Is it all coming together?
We’ll find out. But one thing is clear: a “new” sport — well, sort of — is knocking loudly on the doors of the American sports landscape. Cricket has arrived. And this time, it means business. Cognizant Major League Cricket (MLC) is the premier professional T20 cricket league in the United States. It showcases world-class talent and delivers high-quality cricket experiences to fans nationwide. Exclusively sanctioned by USA Cricket, MLC features superstar players from across the globe. Six franchises compete: the Los Angeles Knight Riders, MI New York, San Francisco Unicorns, Seattle Orcas, Texas Super Kings, and Washington Freedom. A new tree has been planted in this crowded arena of American sports. Like all young trees, it will need care, water, and time. It will need youthful energy. Vision. Patience. After all, soccer once stood where cricket now stands. Over the decades, soccer was watered, fertilised, and nurtured. Now,
MLC will keep attracting such players. And one of them — Nicholas Pooran — has made headlines for choosing club over country. A proud product of Naparima College in Trinidad, Pooran now captains MI New York. He’s not a deserter. He’s a professional with a plan.
it’s blooming.
But here’s the lingering question: Can a sport truly thrive in the U.S. if only a committed diaspora keeps it alive? Perhaps not.
People often talk about “grassroots” and “mainstream” as separate stages. They’re right. But the roots of cricket lovers in America often lie far away — in India, Pakistan, the Caribbean, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia. The attempt now is to recreate that emotion, that madness, on American soil.
In that sense, the cricket diaspora is like a bee. It crosses oceans, carrying the pollen of passion, hoping to plant something that blooms in foreign fields. With time, those flowers — the cheers, the rivalries, the stars — might just
Season 3 of MLC began with a bang, and that helps. New Zealand’s Finn Allen didn’t just announce his arri-val — he thundered it across the Oakland sky. His 151 off 51 balls was more than just a T20 masterclass. It was a sales pitch for cricket in America. The second match between MINY and TSK was full of action, in-cluding a baseball-like plunge at second base to avoid getting out. Three run-outs and a three-run loss added flavour to the match attended by 6000 fans.
Venue selection, too, has been brilliant. In a vast and climatically diverse country, cricket can’t be played everywhere yearround. Chicago, for instance, has a thriving cricket-loving population. But
nature isn’t al-ways kind to outdoor sports in winter. That’s why MLC has strategically chosen cricket-friendly climates — for now. This doesn’t mean Chicago won’t ever host highlevel cricket. It’s just about timing the bloom.
And then there’s the ongoing debate — Club vs Country.
Athletes don’t have the luxury of time. Careers are short. Not every cricketer transitions into commentary like Sunil Gavaskar. Many simply fade into anonymity, struggling to make ends meet. So, can we really blame them for choosing financial stability over national duty?
We say, “Make hay while the sun shines.” But what if you’re in Seattle, where the sun rarely obliges? In Phoenix, yes — it shines nearly every day. But sport, like life, has its rainy seasons.
The Club vs Country dilemma won’t vanish. But let’s stop calling these players unpatriotic. They’re not dis-loyal — they’re just looking after their future.
MLC will keep attracting such players. And one of them — Nicholas Pooran — has made headlines for choosing club over country. A proud product of Naparima College in Trinidad, Pooran now captains MI New York. He’s not a deserter. He’s a professional with a plan.

5 Air India Dreamliner International Flights Cancelled Today
New Delhi: Five Air India flights, including the Delhi-Paris AI 143, were cancelled Tuesday. AI 143 was cancelled after "mandatory pre-flight checks identified an issue", the airline said in a statement this evening. The issue flagged by pre-flight checks "is being addressed", an airline spokesperson said, but the delay means AI 143 will run afoul of restrictions on night-time operations at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport.

Social media now main source of news in US,
research suggests
US podcaster Joe Rogan's content was seen by almost a quarter of people in the US in the week of the research
Social media platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube have become the primary news sources for Americans, surpassing traditional TV and news websites, according to new research by the Reuters Institute. The report shows that 54% of people in the U.S. now get their news from social media, compared to 50% from TV and 48% from news sites and apps.
The rise of personality-driven and social video news is accelerating in the U.S. more rapidly than in other countries, the study found. Podcaster Joe Rogan emerged as the most widely consumed personality, with 22% of respondents reporting exposure to his content in the past week.
Author Nic Newman noted that this shift poses a serious challenge to traditional publishers, as audiences gravitate toward more personal and often partisan news sources. The report also highlighted how politicians increasingly prefer interviews with sympathetic online figures over mainstream media, allowing them to
avoid difficult questions and, in some cases, spread misinformation. Online influencers were seen as a major source of false or misleading information by 47% of global respondents—equal to politicians. X's role in news distribution has remained steady or grown in many countries, especially in the U.S., where right-leaning users have surged since Elon Musk acquired the platform in 2022. Right-wing audiences have also increased in the UK. Meanwhile, alternative platforms like Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon have had minimal impact, with news reach under 2% globally.

Iran hit Israel with a wave of missiles overnight, with some penetrating the Iron Dome defence system - the number killed in Israel since Friday has risen to 24. Proliferating conflict zones around the world are becoming an increasing burden on airline operations and profitability, and more of a safety concern
for Iranian attacks on Israeli citizens.
Israel Katz has now clarified what he meant, writing on X that "there is no intention to physically harm the residents of Tehran". "[They] will be forced to pay the price of the dictatorship and evacuate their homes from areas where it will be necessary to attack regime targets and security infrastructure in Tehran," he says."We will continue to protect the residents of Israel." The Tasnim news agency, which is affiliated with the Iranian Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), says Israel has "brutally attacked the fire department building at the Musiyan municipality" in the Ilam province, near the border with Iraq. It is also reporting that drones were shot down.

Obama Stresses ‘Dignity’ as Trump Expands ICE Raids
The only way America can fix its broken immigration system is by “treating each other with dignity and respect,” former US President Barack Obama said, his comment coming against the backdrop of protests erupting in multiple US cities against Donald Trump’s immigration crackdowns and the President ordering the expansion of such raids.
“Thirteen years ago, my administration acted to protect young people who were American in every single way but one:
The former US President cites Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals as a model for balancing humanity with legality; current President orders to ‘expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal aliens in America's largest cities’

“DACA was an example of how we can be a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. And it’s an example worth remembering today, when families with similar backgrounds who just want to live, work, and support their communities, are being demonized and treated as enemies,” Obama wrote.

Trump Urges Expanded Deportation Efforts
President Donald Trump on Sunday said efforts to deport people who are illegally in the United States must be expanded, including from cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, which have seen protests since immigration raids were ramped up. "I have directed my entire Administration to put every resource possible behind this effort," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social social media site. The comments come after a week of tension in Los Angeles, where Trump called in National Guard troops and US Marines to help keep the peace, over the objections of the state's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Insurance Payout Could Cross
Rs. 1,500 Crore
The Ahmedabad plane crash involving Air India flight AI-171 is being described as one of India's deadliest aviation disasters, with 265 confirmed deaths, including 241 passengers and others on the ground. The crash occurred on June 12, when the Boeing 787-8 aircraft struck a medical college hostel shortly after takeoff. Only one passenger survived.
Initial estimates suggest the total insurance claim could exceed Rs.1,500 crore. India is a signatory to the 1999 Montreal Convention, which mandates specific compensation rules for aviation accidents. Families of deceased passengers are entitled to around Rs.1 crore each, potentially pushing compensation to Rs.240 crore or more. The aircraft was fully destroyed, and its insurance value is estimated betweenRs.650–700 crore, based on its age. The aviation insurance policy is led by Tata AIG General Insurance, with support from GIC Re, United India, Oriental Insurance, and ICICI Lombard. Around 95% of the risk is reinsured by global giants such as AIG, AXA XL, and reinsurers from London and Bermuda. The total aviation cover for Air India’s fleet stands at Rs.8,000–10,000 crore, with an annual premium of Rs.250 crore. Experts believe this crash will significantly impact India’s Rs.900 crore aviation insurance market.

India May Ground Boeing 787-8 Fleet After Ahmedabad Tragedy: Sources
New Delhi:
The Union government is considering grounding the Boeing Dreamliner 7878 fleet, sources said on Friday, a day after one of the aircraft supplied to Air India crashed seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad airport.
The fleet will likely be grounded for a safety review of the American widebody airliner, the sources said, adding that talks between India and US agencies are underway in this regard. "A call will be taken on the basis of a probe into the crash," one of the sources said.
Besides, Air India may also face scrutiny over its standard operating procedure on aircraft maintenance, the source added.
Officials said the aircraft lost altitude soon after taking off at around 1.30pm. It crashed into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in Meghaninagar area before going up in flames, sending plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air.
How Lone Survivor Of Air India Crash Cheated Death
A British-Indian businessman, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, was the sole survivor of the Air India flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 241 lives on Thursday. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London Gatwick, took off at 1:38 pm and crashed moments later into a hostel housing BJ Medical College residents in Meghaninagar. The dead include 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 5 medical students on the ground.
Ramesh, seated in 11A near the emergency exit, escaped the mangled wreckage dazed and burned. His brother, seated across the aisle in 11J, perished in the crash. “Everything happened before my eyes. I thought I would die,” he told Doordarshan.
Air traffic logs revealed the pilot radioed a Mayday seconds after takeoff. Eyewitnesses reported strange engine sounds before the aircraft nosedived into the hostel’s southern wing. Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kundar were in command. Ramesh’s seat section collapsed into the building’s ground floor, creating an exit path. “When the door broke, I saw space and jumped out. I don’t know how I survived,” he said.
Photos show the aircraft’s midsection burned completely, but the forward fuselage where Ramesh sat had partially broken off, enabling his escape.
Now recovering at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Ramesh was visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "He asked me what happened. I said, I don’t know how I lived," Ramesh said.

SS Rajamouli Builds Varanasi Set in Hyderabad for New Film
Renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli has constructed a grand replica of the city of Varanasi in Hyderabad for his upcoming film, which stars Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. Although the film features Varanasi, the actual city won’t be used for shooting due to logistical challenges.
According to reports, the detailed set, which replicates the narrow, bustling lanes of Varanasi, has been built at a cost of approximately Rs. 50 crore. The storyline reportedly revolves around Mahesh Babu’s character embarking on a quest to find a rare medicinal herb. The film currently goes by the working title SSMB29, and also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran in a pivotal role.

Giannoulias Launches Organ Donation Campaign
CHICAGO, IL- Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has unveiled a new public awareness campaign encouraging residents to create a lifesaving “ripple effect” by registering as organ donors.
The campaign’s first ad, set to air this week on broadcast TV, digital, and social media platforms statewide, highlights the far-reaching impact of organ donation.
“Nearly 4,000 Illinoisans are waiting for a transplant—many in critical condition,” said Giannoulias. “By becoming an organ donor, you can spark a chain of hope, enabling recipients to pay that gift forward in powerful ways.”
The ad tells the story of a firefighter saved by a transplant who later rescues a tutor in an accident. The tutor then helps a student gain college admission—showcasing how one donation can lead to multiple lives changed. The narrative draws from real-life stories of organ recipients creating positive ripple effects in their communities.
Illinois has one of the largest donor registries in the country, with about 6.5 million registrants and more than 20,000 new sign-ups each month. One donor can save or improve the lives of up to 25 people.
Yet, the need remains urgent: around 4,000 residents are on the waiting list, and nearly 300 die each year waiting for a transplant.
To register as a donor, visit LifeGoesOn.com, call 800-210-2106, or sign up at your local DMV.

India is now listed under a Level 2 advisory, urging travelers to “exercise increased caution” due to crime and terrorism. The advisory highlights risks such as rape, violent crime, and terrorist activity, especially in high-traffic tourist areas.
High-Risk Regions Identified
The State Department specifically warns against travel to certain areas, including:
• Eastern Maharashtra, northern Telangana, and western West Bengal, where emergency assistance is limited due to restricted access.
• Jammu and Kashmir, including tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, and
Pahalgam, due to ongoing civil unrest and terrorism near the Line of Control.

Giannoulias Drives Public Safety, Modernization Bills
CHICAGO, IL- Several legislative initiatives spearheaded by Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannouli-as— focused on road safety, library security, and government modernization—have been approved by state lawmakers and now await Governor JB Pritzker's review. “This legislative session, we’ve made real progress on issues that will improve the daily lives of Illinois res-idents,” Giannoulias said, referring to bills passed during the General Assembly’s spring session.
Making Roads Safer – House Bill 1226 HB 1226 aims to enhance road safety by raising the age at which drivers must take a behind-the-wheel test from 79 to 87. It also empowers immediate family members to request a driver review if they observe signs of cognitive or medical decline that could impact safe driving.
Illinois is one of only five states that currently do not allow family members to report concerns about a relative’s driving ability. It’s also the only state requiring a road test based solely on age.
Sponsored by Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-113, Belleville) and Sen. Ram Villivalam (D-8, Chicago).
Protecting Public Libraries – Senate Bill 1550
In response to a rise in threats against libraries
Bills
and librarians, SB 1550 authorizes the Secretary of State’s office to issue security grants for libraries statewide. These funds could be used for security cameras, silent alarms, and checkpoints.
Sponsored by Sen. Laura Murphy (D-28, Des Plaines) and Rep. Michael Coffey Jr. (R-95, Springfield).
Modernizing the State Court of Claims – House Bill 1576
HB 1576 streamlines the Court of Claims by allowing remote hearings and enabling the public
to electroni-cally file claims, submit evidence, give testimony, and pay fees— reducing delays caused by outdated paper processes.
Sponsored by Rep. Terra Costa Howard (D-42, Lombard) and Sen. Michael Halpin (D-36, Rock Island).
Preventing CDL Exam Cheating – House Bill 2983
HB 2983 criminalizes cheating on Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exams, including the use of hidden microphones or cell phones. It also enables online testing and updates the Rules of the Road to include safety practices for sharing roads with bicyclists and pedestrians. Drivers would be required to change lanes when overtaking a bicycle.
Sponsored by Rep. Edgar González Jr. (D-23, Chicago) and Sen. Steve Stadelman (D-34, Rockford).
Safeguarding Personal Information – Senate Bill 1467
SB 1467 expands privacy protections to vehicle records, aligning them with driver’s license and ID card standards. Confidential data such as photographs, signatures, Social Security numbers, email addresses, and medical information will be shielded from third-party access.

Congress Leaders Demand Answers RFK Jr. on Vaccine Policy
WASHINGTON, DC- Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, Acting Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Govern-ment Reform Committee, and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services, have sent two letters to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known antivaccine activist, demanding answers regarding his abrupt dismissal of all 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
On June 9, 2025, Secretary Kennedy removed all ACIP members—respected public health and medical ex-perts responsible for reviewing vaccine safety, effectiveness, clinical trials, and manufacturer information to provide evidence-based immunization recommendations used by doctors and insurers nationwide. The lawmakers also questioned HHS’s recent decision to limit access to annual COVID-19 vaccines, effectively removing the option for millions of Americans.
“This reckless decision to remove nonpartisan medical experts from ACIP is another example of your radi-cal, anti-science approach to public health,” the lawmakers wrote. “Given your history of spreading vac-cine misinformation, we are deeply concerned about who will be appointed in their place.”
Vaccines remain one of the most effective public health
tools, preventing approximately 4 million childhood deaths globally each year. According to the CDC, for children born in the U.S. between 1994 and 2023, routine vaccinations have averted 508 million illnesses, 32 million hospitalizations, and over 1.1 million deaths.
Despite this, HHS’s anti-vaccine stance continues even as COVID-19 remains a serious public health con-cern, claiming an estimated 1,000 American lives per week as recently as February 2025. The department’s rollback of previous universal COVID-19 vaccine recommendations signals a dangerous shift away from science-based policy.
“Given your record of promoting medical misinformation and HHS’s apparent disregard for scientific input in its recent policy decisions, we request all documentation related to the June 9 ACIP dismissals and the restrictions on COVID-19 vaccine access,” the Members wrote. “We seek a full explanation of how you plan to ensure every American can access affordable COVID-19 vaccines.”
The lawmakers requested all relevant documents and communications, including any scientific rationale and internal objections within HHS, by June 24, 2025.
Mayor Adams: 100,000+ Illegal Vehicles Cleared from NYC Streets
NEW YORK, ,NY- New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that over 100,000 illegal “ghost vehicles” have been removed from city streets since he took office in January 2022 — including more than 38,000 cars. To mark the milestone, the city crushed hundreds of seized twowheeled ghost vehicles with a bull-dozer at a Department of Sanitation facility. Ghost vehicles — cars or motorcycles with missing or altered license plates — are nearly untraceable by traffic cameras or automated plate readers. They are commonly used to evade tolls and tickets, but have also been linked to serious crimes including shootings and robberies. In September, Adams formed a 15-member NYPD task force dedicated to targeting ghost vehicles. That unit alone has removed over 7,600 vehicles in under a year. In 2025 so far, more than 10,745 ghost cars have been taken off the streets. Authorities say two-wheeled ghost vehicles are also frequently used in thefts and street crimes.

Teen Prodigy's AI App Detects Heart Disease in 7 Seconds, Revolutionizing Early Screening
HiIndia Newsdesk
FRISCO, TEXAS — Siddharth Nandyala, a 14-year-old computer science freshman at the University of Texas at Dallas, has developed a groundbreaking smartphone application called "Circadian AI" that detects early signs of heart disease in just seven seconds. The innovation promises to transform cardiac screening, particularly in underserved communities.
How It Works:
Users place a smartphone near the chest, where the app records heart sounds using advanced noise-cancellation technology. The recording is processed through cloud-based artificial intelligence, which analyzes patterns to identify arrhythmias, heart failure indicators, coronary artery disease markers, and valve abnormalities. Results display immediately, flagging potential issues for medical followup.
Validation & Impact:
• Tested on 18,500 patients (15,000 in U.S. hospitals, 3,500 in India) with 96% accuracy.
Fake Amazon Delivery Duo Ties Up Family, Flees With $15K
They tied up a 42-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and their three children in the base-ment.
QUEENS, NY — Police are searching for two suspects who held a family at gunpoint and robbed them dur-ing a home invasion Monday morning in Whitestone.
The incident occurred around 9:05 a.m. at a home near 152nd Street and 12th Avenue. According to police, the suspects posed as Amazon delivery workers before forcing their way inside. Once inside, they tied up a 42-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and their three children in the base-ment. The suspects then stole $15,000 in cash and jewelry from a safe and fled the scene in the family’s car, which was later found less than a mile away.
No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made.
Police said the suspects are believed to be between 40 and 50 years old. One wore a black hooded sweat-shirt, while the other was seen wearing an Amazon delivery vest.
The investigation is ongoing.
USCIS Changes: New Validity Period for Form I-693
Signed on/after Nov. 1, 2023
WASHINGTON, DC- USCIS has updated Volume 8 of the USCIS Policy Manual to clarify that Form I-693, Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, signed by a civil surgeon on or after November 1, 2023, is valid only while the associated application remains pending. If the application is withdrawn or denied, the submitted Form I-693 is no longer valid. This updated guidance is effective im-mediately and applies to all applications pending or filed on or after June 11, 2025.
Under this policy, if an applicant submits Form I-693 with Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status) and the Form I-485 is later withdrawn or denied, a new Form I-693 must be submitted with any future Form I-485. Most applicants subject to healthrelated grounds of inadmissibility are required to undergo an immigration medical examination. Typically,
Form I-693 must be submitted with adjustment of status applications to confirm the applicant does not have medical conditions that render them inadmissible. USCIS may also require Form I-693 as a matter of discretion if evidence suggests a potential public health concern.
Previously, on April 4, 2024, USCIS updated the Policy Manual to state that a Form I-693 signed on or after November 1, 2023, would be valid indefinitely. This allowed applicants to use the same form for future immigration benefits.
Additionally, on December 2, 2024, USCIS began requiring Form I-693 to be submit-ted at the time of filing Form I-485.
However, USCIS has since determined that the April 2024 policy was too broad and could pose public health risks. By restricting the validity of Form I-693 to the specific benefit request it was submitted with, USCIS ensures that applicants receive timely and accurate medical evaluations, protecting public health in the United States.
• Detected over 40 cardiovascular cases during trials in India, later confirmed via echocardiograms.
• Addresses a critical need: Heart disease causes 32% of global deaths, with early detection dramatically improving outcomes.
The Innovator:
Nandyala, recognized by President Biden and the U.S. House of Representatives, previously designed a $150 prosthetic arm and founded STEM IT, an educational startup. His motivation? "Even one life detected is one life saved," he told Smithsonian Magazine.
Medical Endorsement:
Electrophysiologist Dr. Jameel Ahmed (Louisiana State University) praised the tool’s potential to reach populations with limited healthcare access, though noting it complements—not replaces— traditional diagnostics like EKGs.
Next Steps:
Currently available only to clinicians, Circadian AI seeks regulatory approvals for wider deployment. Nandyala is already adapting its technology to detect lung diseases like pneumonia.
Fugitive Wanted in India Found and Arrested in California
STOCKTON, CA – A fugitive wanted in India on multiple serious charges— including attempted murder, extortion, criminal conspiracy, and illegal possession of firearms—was arrested in California on June 6 through a joint operation.
Lakhvinder Kumar’s arrest highlights growing concerns over transnational criminal networks operating within the U.S., particularly those tied to violent crimes originating in India. Authorities have yet to release further details or announce a timeline for potential extradition proceedings.
This case marks another significant step in the series of high-profile extraditions between the United States and India.
Earlier this year, in April 2025, the U.S. extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, to India.
Kumar’s arrest was the result of coordinated efforts by the FBI Sacramento Field Office, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Francisco, and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) San Francisco. In a Fa-cebook post, the FBI Sacramento Field Office emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “FBI teams nationwide are working alongside the Department of Homeland Security to target dangerous individuals and safeguard our communities.”

Shirley, a 29-year-old protester draped in a Mexican flag, criticized the administration for targeting immigrant laborers. “This government is taking people from construction sites, plants, and farms—the backbone of this country,” she said. “The U.S. is a nation
of immigrants, and I’m here for those who can’t be.”
Brooklyn Councilmember Shahana Hanif addressed the crowd, condemning both the Trump administration and New York Mayor Eric Adams for their handling of immigration. She reaffirmed New York’s stance as a sanctuary city and called for greater protection of international students. “Stop the attacks and assaults on our students!” she declared, drawing cheers.

Pakistani National Extradited in Plot to Attack NYC Jewish Center
Shahzeb Khan, AKA, Shahzeb Jadoon, a 20-
NEW YORK, NY-Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, a 20-year-old Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the U.S. on June 10 to face terrorism-related charges in the Southern District of New York. He is accused of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and planning acts of terrorism targeting Jewish communities in New York City. Khan is set to appear in court on June 11.
Authorities allege that Khan aimed to carry out an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brook-lyn around October 7, 2024, the anniversary of the Hamas attacks in Israel. He allegedly coordinated with a U.S.-based ISIS supporter and undercover law enforcement officers (UCs), instructing them to obtain AR-style rifles and other weapons for the attack. Khan expressed a desire to cause mass casualties, calling New York “perfect to target Jews” due to its large Jewish population. He even shared photographs of the intended attack site and suggested using hunting knives “to slit their throats.” Khan began expressing support for ISIS in November 2023 through social media and encrypted apps, shar-ing propaganda and recruiting others for a planned “coordinated assault.” He selected specific targets and suggested dates for maximum impact, emphasizing Jewish holidays and expected protests.

USPS Warns of Sophisticated Phishing and Smishing Scams
TAMPA, FL-The United States Postal Service is sounding the alarm on evolving phishing and smishing scams that are targeting customers' personal information.
USPS officials report a growing variety of scams, including:
• Phishing via emails
• Smishing via text messages
• Lottery scams, Publisher’s Clearinghouse scams, and romance scams
“These scams are becoming more sophisticated,” said USPS Postal Inspector Damien Kraebel. “Victims in our area have been defrauded through multiple schemes.”
Red Flags to Watch:
• Messages claiming to be from USPS that contain links — legitimate USPS messages never include clicka-ble links
• Foreign country codes, such as texts from the Philippines
• Spelling or grammatical errors in messages
• kraebel emphasized, “If it’s got a country code, it’s not from the U.S. Postal Service.”
“Brushing” Scams on the Rise:
These involve receiving unsolicited items from online sellers who then use your identity to post fake re-views. Fake Publisher’s Clearinghouse checks sent by mail are another tactic scammers use to appear le-gitimate.
USPS Response:
• In 2023, USPS launched Project Safe Delivery, which led to:
• A 27% drop in letter carrier robberies
Over 2,800 arrests linked to mail-related crimes
Scammers often target by demographic. “Younger people may fall for job scams, while the elderly are more vulnerable to romance or sweepstakes scams,” Kraebel said.
Once your personal information or money is gone, recovering it is difficult — especially when international networks are involved.
What You Can Do:
• Monitor your credit accounts and request your annual credit report
• Consider freezing your credit if you're at risk
• Report scam emails to spam@uspis.gov
• Forward suspicious text messages to 7726

Car Wash Workers Targeted as Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Expands
LOS ANGELES, CA- On a quiet Sunday in Los Angeles, U.S. immigration agents raided the Westchester Hand Wash, triggering panic. CCTV footage shows workers fleeing as officers approached—some hiding, others vaulting fences. Six men were arrested, including Jesús Cruz, a longtime employee and U.S. resident for over 30 years.
His wife, Noemi Ciau, rushed to the scene after seeing a social media alert but was too late. “You’re used to having your partner—now I don’t know how I’ll manage,” she said. She hasn’t been able to contact her husband, now held in El Paso, Texas, over 800 miles away.
Officials have not disclosed Cruz’s legal status. The Department of Homeland Security declined to comment on the raid, which is part of a broader escalation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). President Trump’s administration has significantly expanded enforcement operations, aiming to increase daily arrests from 660 to 3,000. Agents are now targeting workplaces, not just criminal suspects.
Another raid days earlier at a downtown LA clothing business led to multiple arrests. Though ICE claimed it was a criminal investigation, undocumented immigrants were detained. Protests erupted, with crowds confronting agents and federal forces deploying flash bangs and tear gas.
Los Angeles, home to over 900,000 undocumented residents, has seen rising fear. Mayor Karen Bass called it “terror,” with families too afraid to go to work or send kids to school. Community groups now run errands for undocumented residents to keep them indoors.
The growing crackdown has sparked protests nationwide, with reports of raids at farms, factories, and meatpacking plants. Lawyers say the system is overwhelmed—detainees vanish into distant facilities without family contact.
Ciau’s five-year-old son keeps asking for his dad. “He still thinks he’s at work,” she said, in tears.

Fake IDs Are Getting Better—Your Best Defense is an ID Scanner
It looks real—holograms, texture, photo quality. But it’s fake, likely ordered from an overseas website.
Today’s counterfeit IDs are so advanced that a simple visual check by a cashier is no longer reliable. Relying on outdated methods puts your employees, business, and license at risk.
The Burden on Cashiers Is Too High
Expecting a cashier to be a document expert is unrealistic. Your POS system helps by prompting age verifi-cation, but there’s a major difference between a reminder and true ID authentication.
Tier 1: What Your Standard NRS POS Does
When a cashier scans an agerestricted product, the POS displays “VERIFY CUSTOMER AGE,” prompting the employee to visually inspect the ID. They must check the photo, calculate the age, and confirm the sale—entirely based on their judgment. This is helpful, but still vulnerable to error and fraud.
Tier 2: The Power of Premium ID
Scanning
Upgrade to the premium scanner and shift verification from human guesswork to instant digital confirma-
tion. The cashier simply scans the 2D barcode on the back of an ID. The POS reads encrypted data directly from the issuing authority (like the DMV), verifies the age, and displays
an immediate APPROVED or DENIED—no manual calculation, no ambiguity.
Why It Matters: Speed, Accuracy, and Compliance
• Faster Transactions: Scanning takes under a second.
• Better Security: Digital barcodes are far harder to fake than physical features.
• Legal Protection: Automatically captures and records required ID info to meet strict compliance laws. Outsmart the Fakes—Protect What Matters
Today’s threats require modern tools. The premium ID scanner transforms your POS into a true line of de-fense—automated, secure, and effortless for staff. It’s an easy, affordable way to protect your license, support your employees, and safeguard your business.

MAGA Brandon Gill Slams Immigration While Married To Dinesh D’Souza’s Daughter
HOUSTON, TX – Texas Republican Congressman Brandon Gill is facing backlash over a social media post blaming mass immigration for what he described as the decline of American society.
Gill, who represents Texas’s 26th Congressional District and is aligned with the far-right wing of the GOP, shared a post comparing two images of California: one from the 1960s showing a calm beach scene with blonde sunbathers, and another from the L.A. riots featuring a man waving a Mexican flag. He captioned it: “California in 1960 vs. California today. Mass migration has made America unrecognizable.”
The post quickly went viral, sparking accusations of hypocrisy. Critics pointed out that Gill is married to Danielle D’Souza Gill, the daughter of Indian immigrant and conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza. Social media users responded with family photos and pointed remarks.
“Remind me, who are you married to?” one user asked. “Your wife is a first-generation American and your father-

Some responses turned uglier, including one user who, after posting a photo of the couple, commented: “Married to a pagan demon worshipper.”

Renouncing U.S. Citizenship: A Growing Global Trend
For many Americans abroad, giving up U.S. citizenship is less about political protest and more about escaping regulatory headaches.
WASHINGTON, DC- Once seen as a rare and symbolic gesture, renouncing U.S. citizenship is becoming more common — and for many Americans abroad, a practical choice. A new report from Boundless high-lights a sharp rise in annual renunciations, from an average of 200–400 before 2009 to a record 6,705 in 2020. Numbers have remained high since.
• Rising Trend: While still relatively rare, the steady increase since 2009 suggests a long-term shift, not a temporary spike.
• Primary Drivers: The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), enacted in 2010 and implemented in 2014, plays a major role. Complex tax rules and foreign banking restrictions are the top reasons Americans abroad are renouncing their citizenship.
• Who’s Affected: Most renunciations come from longterm expats, middle-income earners, and dual citi-zens. The group also includes “accidental Americans” — those unaware of their U.S. citizenship until flagged by foreign banks.
• Global Comparison: The U.S. ranks sixth in renunciations per capita and second in total numbers among developed nations. In contrast to other countries, where renunciations often stem from military obligations or emotional distance, U.S. cases are driven largely by tax and compliance burdens.
• Broader Concerns: This trend points to deeper policy issues around tax enforcement, international bank-ing, and the changing value of U.S. citizenship in a globalized world.
• Delayed Data: Official renunciation numbers are released 12–18 months late. This means any renunciation shifts following Trump’s return to office won’t appear in public records until 2026.
For many Americans abroad, giving up U.S. citizenship is less about political protest and more about es-caping regulatory headaches. As cross-border mobility grows, the U.S. may need to reconsider whether its current policies truly serve the interests of its global citizenry.
Illinois Treasurer Warns Seniors of Financial Scams
CHICAGO, IL- In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Sunday, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has joined forces with the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) to raise awareness about the alarming connection between social isolation and financial abuse among Il-linois seniors.
Social isolation—whether intentional or not— can significantly increase the risk of financial exploitation. Scammers often prey on older adults during vulnerable periods, such as health challenges or the loss of a loved one, using deceptive emails, texts, or social media messages to extract personal financial infor-mation.
“Protecting our seniors is essential to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all Illinois residents,” said Giannoulias. “Educating our older loved ones about financial literacy and online scams is a critical step in keeping them safe.”
Giannoulias advised Illinoisans to avoid clicking on links from unknown sources and to be wary of promises involving high returns with no risk. He also encouraged families to maintain regular contact with seniors, noting that consistent communica-tion can help combat loneliness and reduce the likelihood of them turning to online platforms for social interaction. Open family discussions about fraud and online scams can further strengthen seniors' aware-ness and safeguard their financial well-being.
The Illinois Secretary of State’s Securities Department offers support and resources to help residents rec-ognize and avoid scams. Visit www.ilsos.gov/ protectinginvestors for more information.
NASAA also provides helpful tools and investor advisories on avoiding fraud, including guidance on the risks associated with social isolation. Learn more at www.nasaa.org.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Warns About Illegal Entry on Trains
EL PASO, TX- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), El Paso Field Office, is urging the public not to attempt illegal entry into the U.S. via trains following a recent incident.
On June 6 at 6 p.m., CBP officers assigned to rail operations apprehended an adult male Mexican national attempting to enter the U.S. without inspection via the Union Pacific Railway in El Paso. A nonintrusive in-spection of a northbound train revealed anomalies, prompting a physical search. Officers discovered an undocumented individual hidden in a hollow section of an empty hopper car.
The individual, who had a prior immigration arrest and deportation, was taken into custody and charged with illegal reentry under 8 USC 1326.
“Attempting to enter the United States without inspection via a cargo train is not only illegal, but extremely dangerous,” said Samuel Cleaves, Assistant Director for Border Security, CBP El Paso. “Injuries, heat stroke, dehydration, and shifting cargo all pose serious risks. Those caught will face legal consequences under Title 8 of the U.S. Code. It is simply not worth the risk.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal Hosts “Shadow Hearing” on Trump-Era Immigration Practices
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Ranking Member of the Immigration Integri-ty, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, recently convened a “Shadow Hearing” titled “Kidnapped and Disappeared: Trump’s Lawless Third Country Disappearances.”
The hearing focused on allegations that individuals were unlawfully detained and transferred to third countries including El Salvador, Panama, Cos-ta Rica, South Sudan, and Libya.
This session marked the first in a planned series of hearings led by Rep. Jayapal to examine immigration policies and actions under the Trump administration.
During the hearing, Congresswoman Jayapal delivered sharp criticism of former President Trump, accusing him of showing “utter contempt for the Constitution” since taking office. She charged that his administra-tion undermined the authority of Congress, disparaged the judiciary, and caused significant harm to demo-cratic institutions. She further asserted that Trump’s aggressive
Illinois Secretary of State Cracks Down on License Plate
Data Abuse
CHICAGO, IL- Following reports that Texas police illegally accessed Illinois’ automatic license plate reader (ALPR) data to track a woman over abortion care, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced new safeguards to prevent future misuse.
In May, Texas authorities used a nationwide ALPR network—over 83,000 cameras—to locate a woman accused of a self-managed abortion. Their search included data from Mount Prospect, Illinois, where abor-tion is legal.
Giannoulias previously led first-in-thenation legislation in 2023 that prohibits out-of-state law enforce-ment from using Illinois ALPR data to investigate abortion care or immigration status.
“ALPRs can aid law enforcement, but they must not be used to criminalize lawful behavior or surveil inno-cent people,” said Giannoulias. “No one seeking legal healthcare in Illinois should face harassment or ar-rest.”
In response to the violation, the Secretary of State’s office ordered Flock Safety—the company managing the ALPR network—to immediately cut off access to the out-of-state authorities
involved. The office also contacted the Illinois Attorney General and is establishing an audit system to ensure compliance with the law.
Under the law, effective since 2024, agencies using ALPRs in Illinois must affirm that data won’t be used to enforce abortion or immigration-related laws from other states. Violations can result in revoked access and loss of grant eligibility.
Despite these rules, Mount Prospect’s ALPR settings enabled unauthorized use. Between January 14 and April 30 alone, 262 immigration-related searches occurred there.
“This breach shows the need for strict oversight,” said Lawrence Benito of the Illinois Coalition for Immi-grant Rights. “We commend the Secretary for acting swiftly.”
Sarah Garza Resnick, CEO of Personal PAC, added, “We applaud this action to protect patients relying on Illinois for abortion access.”
The law still permits ALPR use for investigating felonies, carjackings, and missing persons, while firmly protecting abortion and immigration rights.
deportation agenda—targeting both doc-umented and undocumented immigrants—led to widespread violations of constitutional rights.
Emphasizing the importance of due process, Jayapal called it a “critical protection” afforded to all individuals, regardless of citizenship status. She stressed the necessity for everyone to have the opportunity to present evidence and defend themselves against unfounded accusations, including charges of terrorism or gang affiliation—or the extreme act of being “kidnapped off the street and disappeared.”
Witnesses who testified included:
• Lindsay Toczylowski, President and CEO, Immigrant Defenders Law Center and legal counsel for Andry Romero
• Robyn Barnard, Senior Director of Refugee Advocacy, Human Rights First
• Lee Gelernt, Deputy Director, Immigrants’ Rights Project, ACLU
• Beatriz Guzman, Venezuelan-American immigrant and immigration attorney
Indian-Origin Builder Charged in Murder Plot
According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, Singh approached the supposed hitman on May 29, outlining a plan to kidnap, torture, and kill the intended victim
MINEOLA, NY – Navdeep Singh, 48, a construction company owner from Nassau County, has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating a plot to kidnap and murder a former business associate. Prosecutors an-nounced the charges on June 9, describing a chilling scheme rooted in a long-standing legal and profes-sional dispute. Singh was arraigned on June 8 on charges of felony conspiracy and criminal solicitation. Authorities allege he offered a hitman $100,000 and 10 acres of land in India to carry out the crime.
According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, Singh approached the supposed hitman on May 29, outlining a plan to kidnap, torture, and kill the intended victim. He allegedly made an initial payment of $7,000 and demanded photographic proof of the victim’s head and torso as confirmation. Singh is also ac-cused of conducting surveillance on the victim’s home to support the plan.
The alleged motive stems from a bitter fallout between the two men. Singh’s company, Gravity Construc-tion Corp., was removed from a project managed by the victim, sparking a multimillion-dollar civil lawsuit between their firms.
The plot came to light when the would-be hitman backed out and reported the scheme to authorities. Singh was arrested on June 7 and is currently being held on $1 million cash bail or a $5 million bond.
