NCW slams Salman for rape remark

S

uperstar Salman Khan found himself in hot water once again after comparing himself to a “raped woman” while talking about the training schedule for Sultan. After his remarks sparked controversy, Salman’s father and veteran screenwriter Salim Khan came forward to apologize for his son’s statement. Salman was responding to a query on his experience of shooting for his forthcoming film during a media interaction here on June 18. Salim Khan contended that Salman meant no wrong when he said he felt like a “raped woman”, but apologized on his behalf. Salim Khan tweeted: “Undoubtedly, what Salman said is wrong, the simile, example and the context. The intention was not wrong. Nevertheless, I apologize on behalf of his family, his fans and his friends. Forgiveness is to pardon the unpardonable or it is no virtue at all.” When Salman was asked how difficult it was to shoot wrestling scenes for the movie, he said: “While shooting during those six hours, there was so much of lifting and thrusting that it was unbelievable. If I was lifting a 120 kg person and dropping him down, I had

to do it 10 times. “(I did it) 10 times from five different angles. So, six-and-half or seven hours. Either, I was picking him and throwing (him) or else, he was picking me up and throwing me... So it was like the most difficult thing. “When I used to walk out of the ring, I used to feel actually like a

raped woman walking out... I don’t think you... It was most difficult... I couldn’t take steps. I would eat and then head right back to weight training. That couldn’t stop.” The comment sent social media users into a tizzy, with many slamming the actor for his “callous remark” after a website, SpotboyE, carried the detailed quotes of

Salman as an “interview”. Criticizing Salman, who is one of the top paid celebrities in India, the National Commission for Women (NCW) asked him to furnish an apology within seven days. NCW Chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam said Salman may be issued a summon if he failed to comply.

NEW DELHI: Criticizing Bollywood superstar Salman Khan for his remark that he felt like a “raped woman” after shooting a wrestling scene in his upcoming film “Sultan”, the National Commission for Women on June 21 asked him to apologize within seven days. “Just because he is Salman Khan does not mean he will make such a statement. This is sad,” National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam told the media. She said Salman may be issued a summons if he failed to comply. “It is like the most difficult thing... when I used to walk out of that ring, it used to be actually like a raped woman walking out... it feels like the most difficult... I couldn’t take steps,” Khan is heard saying in an audio clipping during interaction with a goup of journalists. Asha Devi, mother of the infamous 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim, said she was “hurt” by Salman’s remarks. “He says he felt like a raped woman. What does he know of rape?” She told a news channel, trying to fight back tears.

The actress is not all about glamour and films. She has also done her bit for the society — be it aligning herself with social cause like “Girl Rising” campaign or getting together with female stars for a production house to solve the issue of gender disparity in Hollywood.

T

he 17th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) — which celebrates the soft power of Bollywood in taking India to global audiences — is set to celebrate 60 years of India’s diplomatic relations with Spain here starting June 23 with close to 150 celebrities and over 20,000 fans in attendance. Regarded as the football capital of the world, Madrid is the fourth European nation that IIFA is visiting after London, Yorkshire and Amsterdam. And the four-day gala which will conclude with a colorful and exuberant awards ceremony on June 27, will play host to some of the most celebrated stars of the Indian film industry, notable guests, and dignitaries from India and the region along with Indian cinema fans from across the globe. Not only this, the event also promises to present an amalgamation of two richly diverse countries and cultures. The aim is to bring the magic of Indian cinema not

only to Spain, but to Latin America as well, says Andre Timmins, director, Wizcraft International, the producers and creator of the IIFA. “We treat IIFA as India because ultimately, through the platform we are selling India,” Timmins told IANS in an interview. Some celebrities who will be walking the ‘green carpet’ at the event will be Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Sridevi, Boney Kapoor, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Boman Irani, Kabir Khan,

Ranveer Singh, Bipasha Basu, Huma Qureshi, Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza and Riteish Deshmukh. The event has also been timed to integrate with the city’s Mulafest. A Movement of Urban Life and Arts event and exhibition, it is Madrid’s annual culture fest that brings together music, art and food all in one place. “We are collaborating with them, and have become the partner country. We have integrated our programming with Mulafest,” Timmins said.
