New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani ruffled feathers after he announced on Tuesday that he is appointing a controversial lawyer as the city's top attorney. Ramzi Kassem, who was tapped by Mamdani, defended al-Qaeda terrorist Ahmed al-Darbi in court.

Osama bin Laden's close ally, Ahmed al-Darbi, was found guilty of orchestrating the 2002 attack on a French oil tanker near Yemen's coastline.

In 2025, Kassem also represented anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil, who was a figurehead of student protests at Columbia University against US ally Israel's war in Gaza, and the administration of Donald Trump labelled him a national security threat.

Mexican officials have seized motorcycles worth $40m (£30m) belonging to Ryan Wedding, the Canadian former Olympic snowboarder who is accused of running a vast drug dealing operation.

The vehicles were discovered by Mexican authorities over several raids, the FBI said in a statement, adding that the seizures came with assistance from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Los Angeles Police Department.

The motorcycles appear to include rare racing models. Last month, officials seized a $13m Mercedes hypercar from Wedding, who is believed to be living under the protection of Mexican drug cartels.Officials allege Wedding is among the largest narcotics traffickers in North America.

Isiah Whitlock Jr, who was known for his memorable acting roles on The Wire and Veep, has died at the age of 71, according to his manager.

"It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr," manager Brian Liebman wrote on Instagram.

Whitlock, who also featured in Goodfellas and The Chappelle Show, was a longtime collaborator with director Spike Lee, who also shared a heartfelt tribute to him.

"Today I Learned Of The Passing Of My Dear Beloved Brother ISIAH WHITLOCK. GOD BLESS," Lee wrote, alongside a photo of the two men shaking hands. "If you knew him - you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person," Mr Liebman wrote.

"May his memory forever be a blessing.

Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed."

In statements to Hollywood news outlets, he added that Whitlock passed away in New York after a short illness.

On The Wire, Whitlock played a corrupt politician, and was known for his profane catchphrase, which Whitlock himself had developed.

His elongated version of the common swear word was inspired by his uncle, he said in a 2008 interview.

In a post on X on Tuesday, a top official with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) cited the viral video, and said the agency would target "blatant fraud that seems to be rampant in Minnesota".

State officials have pushed back against allegations of fraud in the video.

Immigration enforcement has recently ramped up in the state, home to the largest population of Somali immigrants in the US, after President Donald Trump said he didn't want them in the country.

"We have frozen all child care payments to the state of Minnesota," HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill announced in an X post on Tuesday.

He said this decision comes amid "serious allegations that the state of Minnesota has funneled millions of taxpayer dollars to fraudulent daycares across Minnesota over the past decade".

The department said it would suspend the annual payment of $185m (£137m) to the state, pending a full review of the centres in question.

O'Neill's post added that HHS would introduce a "defend the spend" system for all future payments to every state. This would require "justification and a receipt or photo evidence before we send money to a state", he said.

The video by Nick Shirley, which has received millions of views across multiple social media platforms since being posted over the weekend, accused nearly a dozen centres of not providing any services or having any children present when Mr Shirley visited.

The Walt Disney Company will pay $10m (£7.4m) to resolve claims that it broke children's privacy laws by failing to label some YouTube videos as made for children, allowing for targeted advertising.

Disney had agreed to a settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission in September to resolve an inquiry into its collection of children's personal data.

The FTC had argued that, as a result of Disney's alleged failure to properly label children's videos, kids received targeted advertising and had their data collected without parental notice and consent.

Bajendra Biswas, another Hindu man, was shot dead in Bangladesh's Mymensingh, days after a mob lynched and killed factory worker Dipu Chandra Das over false blasphemy accusations. Forty-year-old Biswas was killed while on duty at a garment factory by a colleague in Bhaluka upazila.

The shooting took place around 6.30 pm on Monday at the Sultana Sweaters Limited factory in the Mehrabari area of the upazila. Biswas was a member of Ansar Bahini, a paramilitary auxiliary force under Bangladesh's Ministry of Home Affairs, responsible for internal security and law enforcement in the country.

He was killed by fellow Ansar member Noman Mia, another member of Ansar Bahini.

Noman has since been arrested, according to police. Citing police and local sources, Bangladeshi media outlet RTV Online reported that a total of 20 Ansar members were working at the Sultana Sweaters Limited factory at the time of the incident.

Online Hindi classes are also available. Additionally, the Hindi Club has established a Hindi library inside Shree Ganesh Temple for Hindi language enthusiasts.

Looking ahead, Hindi Club of Illinois is excited to present several programs in 2026. New York: While the new year brings in new things, for thousands across America, this New Year Eve would be a historic moment as NY would see its first-ever Indian-origin mayor to take the oath of office. Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has said he plans to take his oath of office in a not-in-use subway station beneath city hall. About his unusual choice of venue for the ceremony, Mamdani reportedly said, is symbolic of “inauguration of a new era”. “It was a physical monument to a city that dared to be both beautiful and build great things that would transform working peoples’ lives,” Mamdani said in a statement.

Was 2025 the Year Indians in America Traveled Less?

growing number of Indian professionals on H-1B visas are choosing to stay put in the United States, wary that routine travel could trigger heightened immigration scrutiny, according to a new nationwide survey.

The 2025 Survey of Immigrants, conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation in partnership with The New York Times, found that nearly 32 percent of H-1B visa holders said they avoided travel—both domestic and international, out of concern over potential encounters with immigration authorities. Indians make up the largest share of H-1B workers in the U.S., placing them at the center of this growing unease.

Overall, about 27 percent of immigrants surveyed said they altered or cancelled travel plans to reduce the risk of immigration enforcement.

The hesitation extends well beyond undocumented immigrants, reflecting what researchers describe as a broader climate of anxiety affecting even legally present and naturalized immigrants.

The trend coincides with the Trump administration’s stepped-up immigration enforcement, which has expanded scrutiny at airports, border crossings, and other transit points.

Increased inter-agency data sharing and enhanced vetting have made travel a flashpoint for immigrant communities that once viewed it as routine.

While fear is most acute among undocumented immigrants—nearly

Instead of packed terminals and long security lines, many Indian and other immigrant families opted to skip travel altogether, citing

heightened checks and closer scrutiny during peak travel weeks.

The survey points to a clear motivation behind these choices: keeping a low profile. Anxiety has intensified amid reports that the Transportation Security Administration has shared domestic travel data, including passenger lists, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. For H-1B holders already navigating a complex visa system, even domestic flights are increasingly seen as a risk.

That fear has been compounded by recent policy shifts that have disproportionately affected Indian nationals. In July, the U.S. State Department eliminated remote and third-country renewals for H-1B and

H-4 visas, forcing applicants to travel to their home countries—primarily India—for visa stamping. The move flooded U.S. consulates with applications.

In September, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a $100,000 fee on new H-1B applications, followed by expanded social media screening by early December. The changes strained embassy operations across India, triggering widespread appointment cancellations and delays. In some cases, visa interviews scheduled for late 2025 were pushed out by nearly a year, with reports of dates extending into 2027.

The disruptions left hundreds of Indian professionals stranded abroad after traveling for interviews, unable to return to their U.S. jobs or reunite with their families—stories that have circulated widely within the Indian American community and fueled reluctance to travel at all.

Yet despite the mounting anxiety, the survey reveals a striking contradiction. A strong majority of immigrants, including H-1B workers, said they would still choose to come to the United States if given the chance to decide again. Even as scrutiny intensifies, many continue to view the country as a place of opportunity, stability, and long-term promise.

Gujarat-Based Agents Allegedly Using Morocco– Canada Path to Facilitate Border Crossings into America An old and previously abandoned illegal immigration route through Africa has reportedly become active again, with agents allegedly using Morocco and Canada as transit points to help Indians enter the United States unlawfully.

Under this route, passengers are flown from Delhi or Mumbai to Morocco and then placed on direct flights to Canada. From there, they are reportedly guided to cross into the U.S., mainly through the Canada–U.S. border. Sources say Moroccan visas are relatively easy for Indians to obtain, and local arrangements are managed through agents.

This so-called “Africa route” was once widely used by Gujaratis before being replaced by paths through Dubai and Turkey. However, a Gujarat-based agent, previously jailed for similar activities, is believed to have revived it. Youths from parts of Gujarat are said to have recently reached the U.S. using this method.

Unlike earlier times, travelers now allegedly use genuine passports and are instructed on seeking asylum after landing in Canada. The route is faster but costly, with fees rising to Rs.90–95 lakh. With tougher U.S. action expected in 2026, risks and financial losses have increased, reducing demand.

At least five houses of a Hindu family were set on fire in Dumritala village in the Muslim-dominated nation's Pirojpur district, in what is suspected to be a targeted attack on minorities. The incident occurred on December 28, over a week after 29-year-old garment worker Dipu Chandra Das was attacked by a mob, lynched, and his body set on fire over blasphemy allegations in Mymensingh on December 18.

According to local authorities, the exact cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed

Once a visa is revoked, the holder is immediately barred from re-entering the country and must apply afresh, a process that can stretch for months with no guarantee of approval.

Alarmingly, some visas stamped as recently as 2025 have also been cancelled.

Experts note that earlier, visa

revocations typically occurred only in cases involving fraud, criminal activity, or concealment of information. However, attorneys say the US State Department has not issued any official explanation for the current wave.

Immigration attorney Emily Neuman said the State Department often reiterates that a visa is a “privilege, not a right,” but has failed to clarify why these revocations are occurring when no new information has emerged.

Legal experts warn that while revocation has limited impact if a person remains inside the US, travelling abroad now carries significant risk. Several NRI groups report individuals receiving revocation messages upon landing in India. Under the proposal, immigrants detained at smaller centers would be processed locally and then transferred to large facilities, from where they would be directly flown out for deportation. This approach is intended to shorten detention periods and speed up removals, without building new jails.

Currently, ICE holds over 68,000 immigrants in custody, with each warehouse facility potentially accommodating up to 10,000 people.

The first phase would cover Virginia, Texas, and Indiana, followed by Arizona, Georgia, and Missouri.

Planned upgrades include housing, medical units, kitchens, and administrative areas. Bloomberg reported a $30 million contract has been awarded, though officials say the plan may still change.

The US Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey stated that Dhruvesh Patel, 37, and Mayank Ray, 36, residents of Absecon City, admitted before US District Judge Christine O’Hearn that they conspired to defraud the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The duo operated multiple motels in the Atlantic City area.

According to court documents, Patel and Ray systematically underreported their business income by concealing cash payments from customers. Guests who paid in cash were allegedly given incomplete or informal receipts, and

Sentencing is scheduled for May 11, 2026.

The organisation claims that three songs were used without permission in Season 3 of the series, which aired between June and September this year.

A report by Mid-Day stated that according to the commercial suit filed on December 12, PPL India says the episodes included popular tracks without securing the necessary licences from the rights holders. The episodes in question featured ‘M Bole To’ from Munna Bhai MBBS (2003), ‘Rama Re’ from Kaante (2002), and ‘Subha Hone Na De’ from Desi Boyz (2011). PPL India states the use of these songs amounts to “public performance/ communication to the public” under the Indian Copyright Act, which requires a licence.

His wife, Niharika Sreekumar, alleged that her husband arrived at the hospital around 12:20 pm on December 22 after experiencing severe chest pain. Despite repeatedly complaining of worsening pain, he was made to wait in the triage area until around 8:50 pm. During this time, his blood pressure reportedly rose to 210, yet he was only given Tylenol and no emergency care.

Niharika claimed hospital staff dismissed chest pain as nonacute and did not suspect a heart attack. After hours of waiting, Sreekumar was finally taken inside the emergency area, where he collapsed moments later. Nurses attempted resuscitation, but he was pronounced dead.

Sreekumar’s father said his son rated his pain as “15 out of 10” and begged for help. The hospital, operated

by Covenant Health, has said the case is under review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and expressed condolences to the family.

Trump said the US military "executed numerous perfect strikes", while the US Africa Command (Africom) later reported that Thursday's attack was carried out in co-ordination with Nigeria in the Sokoto state.

Without naming IS specifically, Tuggar said the operation had been planned "for quite some time" and had used intelligence information provided by the Nigerian side.

Arjun Raj, a junior at San Francisco University High School, earned top honors at the World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY), a global contest that encourages students to apply AI to real-world challenges. More than 10,000 projects were submitted this year.

Judges evaluated entries based on technical merit, ethical use of artificial intelligence, and real-world impact, Raj said.

“Judges recognized this project for demonstrating how large language models can address gaps in public services and improve educational equity for underrepresented communities,” he said.

Because large language models like ChatGPT can operate in more than 50 languages, Raj said the system can be easily adapted to support other immigrant communities within SFUSD and school districts nationwide.

“Eventually, I envision this kind of AI LLM being utilized not only by native Thai speakers at SFUSD, but

by Hmong-speaking families in the Madison Metropolitan School District, or Bengali families within the New York City public school system, and beyond,” Raj said.

The 35-year-old, David Arokiaraj Maria Anthony Rayan, pleaded guilty to 17 counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted sexual assault involving 18 women at a Prahran nightclub across multiple nights in 2023. Chicago Police Warn of Robberies Involving Fake Donation Requests HiIndia Newsdesk

CHICAGO, IL -Chicago police are alerting River North residents, workers, and visitors following a series of robberies in which offenders allegedly used deception to gain access to victims’ cellphones before electronically stealing money.

According to the Chicago Police Department, multiple incidents were reported throughout December in the 600 block of North Dearborn Street. In these cases, victims told officers they were approached by groups of men who initially appeared non-threatening. The suspects reportedly asked victims to make a donation or requested that they follow them on social media platforms such as Instagram.

Once the suspects convinced victims to hand over their phones, police say they quickly accessed

financial apps and transferred money using digital payment services including Zelle and Apple Pay. In several cases, victims were unaware of the theft until after the suspects fled the scene.

Police further reported that when victims hesitated or refused to cooperate, the encounters escalated.

In at least one incident, a victim was forcibly led toward a larger group of offenders, where personal property was taken by force.

Authorities said the robberies occurred between December 13 and December 21, primarily during overnight and early-morning hours, a time when foot traffic is lighter and visibility may be reduced.

The suspects are described as three to eight Black men, believed to be between 20 and 30 years old, last seen wearing dark-colored clothing.

NEW YORK, NY -As New Yorkers gear up for the holiday season, the New York State Department of Health is alerting residents to a sharp rise in flu cases across New York City.

Recent data compiled earlier this month shows a 73 percent increase in flu cases citywide. Overall, approximately 24,471 cases were reported in New York City, compared with 47,522 cases statewide.

Between December 6 and December 13, Manhattan recorded the largest spike, with cases more than doubling— up 104 percent, from 1,493 to 3,044.

The Bronx followed closely, reporting a 98 percent increase, rising from 2,934 to 5,803 cases.

Other boroughs also experienced significant increases during the same period. Staten Island saw a 75 percent rise in cases, from 940 to 1,647.

Queens recorded a 62 percent increase, with cases climbing from 4,137 to 6,711, while Brooklyn experienced a 58 percent jump, from 4,607 to 7,266 cases.

Health officials note that a new flu strain is contributing to the surge nationwide. Symptoms are similar to those of typical influenza and include fever, chills, body aches, headaches, extreme fatigue, congestion or a runny nose, and coughing.

The letter cites reporting that in early 2025, DOJ leadership directed FBI Joint Terrorism Task Forces to assist with immigration initiatives. As a

result, agents responsible for terrorism investigations, espionage detection, and cyber threat monitoring were required to prioritize immigration enforcement over national security work, giving less attention to urgent threats.

Despite a rise in alleged terrorist incidents across the United States, nearly a quarter of the FBI’s approximately 13,000 agents nationwide—and up to 40 percent in the Bureau’s largest field offices—remain assigned to immigration enforcement duties.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi also highlighted reports that analysts investigating terrorist financing, money laundering, illicit antiquities trafficking, and the Iranian oil black market used to fund terrorism have faced delays of

several months. In some cases, longrunning and complex investigations involving classified techniques and sources have been halted entirely due to the diversion of personnel.

The letter further raises alarm that counterintelligence specialists with deep expertise on China, Russia, and Iran have been reassigned to immigration cases, weakening enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act and allowing foreign intelligence operatives greater freedom to operate inside the United States.

Emphasizing the FBI’s statutory mandate, Congressman Krishnamoorthi stressed that its counterterrorism and counterintelligence components exist to detect and disrupt hostile foreign actors—not to conduct civil immigration enforcement. He concluded by requesting detailed answers regarding the scope, impact, and risk assessments associated with these diversions, as well as steps being taken to restore full operational readiness.

NEW YORK, NY -An unidentified man is accused of assaulting a woman with a laptop during an unprovoked attack aboard a Manhattan subway train, according to police.

The incident occurred on December 9 at approximately 10:20 a.m. on an uptown W train as it approached the Rector Street station in the Financial District.

Police said the 65-year-old woman had been speaking with the suspect prior to the attack. At some point during the conversation, the man allegedly removed a laptop from his backpack and struck the woman multiple times in the head.

Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to NewYorkPresbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities said the suspect remained on the train following the assault and was last seen exiting at the Canal Street station, where he fled on foot.

The New York City Police Department released surveillance images of the suspect on Tuesday. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

WASHINGTON, DC – During his political campaigns, President Donald Trump has frequently been seen on camera describing himself as “very greedy,” once declaring, “My whole life I’ve been greedy, greedy, greedy. I’ve grabbed all the money I can get.” He typically framed the remark as a virtue, assuring supporters that if elected he would be “greedy for the United States.”

Once in office, critics argue that Trump blurred the line between lobbying and outright bribery, even as his administration has repeatedly insisted that no laws were broken.

A recent investigation by The New York Times found that at least six Indianorigin Americans, or the companies they lead, were among major donors to Trump-aligned political efforts in 2025—and that their contributions were followed by tangible benefits. The report documents a pattern in which large donations coincided with favorable policy decisions, privileged access to the president, senior appointments, or, in some cases, presidential pardons for donors convicted of crimes.
