Indian American Woman caught Shoplifting Diamond Bracelet in NJ
Indian American woman accused of stealing $2,300 diamond bracelet in New Jersey; police uncover more stolen items from Nordstrom, J. Crew, and more in her car. The incident coming months after the Target shoplifting case has once again triggered a debate
The Department of Homeland Security declined to confirm or deny the plans but reiterated: “President Trump has been clear: We are going to make our streets and cities safe again.”
India Kills Us With Tariffs, Offered Me Zero-Levy Deal: Trump
US President Donald Trump has doubled down on his criticism of India's tariffs on Washington and said that "India kills us with tariffs". He added that New Delhi has offered "no tariffs" to the US, amid escalating tensions with the latter over policies around trade and tariff.
"They have tariffs against us. China, which kills us with tariffs. India kills us with tariffs. Brazil kills us" with tariffs, Trump said in an interview with The Scott Jennings Radio Show on Tuesday. Trump explained how he knows tariffs "better than any human being in the world" and that India started dropping the tariffs only after US started imposing tax on New Delhi. Labelling India as the "most highly tariffed nation" he said, "And you know what, they've offered me no tariffs in India anymore. No tariffs."
US President Donald Trump has doubled down on his criticism of India's tariffs on Washington and said that "India kills us with tariffs".
The US President went on to justify why tariffs are important. "If I didn't have tariffs, they would never make that offer. They would never make that offer. So you have to have tariffs. We're going to be economically strong," he said.
Trump Signals Possible New Sanctions Over Putin’s Ukraine War
United States: US President Donald Trump hinted Wednesday at fresh Russia sanctions if it fails to end its Ukraine war, saying "you'll see things happen" if he's dissatisfied with President Vladimir Putin's response.
Trump will also speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, a White House official told AFP, after Zelensky and European leaders said earlier that they expected a call. "I have no message to President Putin, he knows where I stand, and he'll make a decision one way or the other," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office as he met Polish President Karol Nawrocki. "Whatever his decision is, we'll either be happy about it or unhappy. And if
we're unhappy about it, you'll see things happen."
Trump's comments came as Putin -- who attended a huge military parade in Beijing with Xi Jinping of China and Kim Jong Un of North Korea -- vowed to carry on fighting in Ukraine if a peace deal cannot be reached.
The US president's diplomatic efforts to secure a peace deal appear to have stalled. Putin has shown little inclination to agree to a two-way meeting that Trump said he was arranging between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders. Trump, meanwhile, has remained vague on what he will do if Putin fails to play ball.
Trump: Musk “80% Genius, 20% Problems,”
US President Donald Trump said that former ally Elon Musk has no choice but to return to the Republican Party following their public rift earlier this year, framing Musk’s options as the GOP or the “radical left lunatics.” Speaking on the Scott Jennings Show, Trump largely complimented Musk, calling him “80% super genius” while noting he has “20% problems” to work through, and described the Tesla CEO as a “good man” who “got off the reservation incorrectly,” but insisted that once he addresses his issues, he will be great.
Judge overturns Trump administration funding cuts to Harvard
A US federal court has overturned billions in funding cuts by President Donald Trump's administration to Harvard University. Judge Allison Burroughs ruled the government violated the Ivy League college's free speech rights when it revoked around $2bn (£1.5bn) in research grants. The ruling is a major legal victory for Harvard, but the White House has vowed to appeal. When it froze funding in April, the Trump administration accused the college of antisemitism, "radical left"
ideologies and racial bias.
Three other Ivy League universities, Columbia, Penn and Brown, struck deals with Trump to preserve funding that was at risk due to similar claims by the administration, rather than go to court. Boston-based Judge Burroughs wrote in Wednesday's ruling: "The Court vacates and sets aside the Freeze Orders and Termination Letters as violative of the First Amendment." She blocked the administration from stopping any more federal funding to the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based college and barred the government from withholding payment on existing grants.
The White House said they would immediately challenge the "egregious decision" and called the judge an "activist" who was appointed by former President Barack Obama and was never going to rule in their favour.
However, this is not the first time Trump has made this claim. Earlier, on Monday, he said that the business relationship between the two countries had been "totally one-sided". He declared that it was a "one-sided disaster" and now that India has offered to cut down the tariffs, he said "it's getting late".
Trump has been met with backlash from his own country after a US appeals court ruled the tariffs "illegal".
Trump lashed out by saying that the appeals court "incorrectly said that our Tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States of America will win in the end," in a statement on his Truth Social platform.
The US has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India, among the highest in the world, including 25 per cent for its purchases of Russian oil. India has called the tariffs imposed by the US "unjustified and unreasonable".
Trump: China Should Acknowledge US WW2 Aid During Ceremony
Trump lauds 'impressive' military spectacle in Beijing, says U.S. helped China 'very much' in World War Two
Washington, D.C.—US
President Donald Trump said China should have recognized American contributions during World War II while hosting its recent military parade in Beijing. Calling the event “beautiful,” Trump expressed disappointment that China did not publicly credit the US for its role in supporting the Allies.
Speaking on social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against the United States of America,” underscoring his criticism of China’s perceived lack of acknowledgment. The remarks come amid heightened US-China tensions over trade policies, military developments, and geopolitical influence. Analysts note that Trump’s comment reflects his insistence that historical partnerships be publicly recognized in international diplomacy.

China’s Turmoil Highlights Risks of Trump’s Trade Policy
HiIndia Newsdesk
China displayed its military power in a grand parade marking 80 years since the end of World War II, signaling its rising influence as an alternative to the US-led global order. Donald Trump watched the spectacle with mixed feelings—calling it “impressive” but also criticizing China on social media for not acknowledging US contributions during the war.
The parade coincided with a Tianjin summit where China, Russia, and India appeared closer, partly fueled by Trump’s aggressive tariffs that have disrupted global trade and strained diplomatic relations. Experts warn that Trump’s high-risk trade policies, intended to protect US industry, may backfire—strengthening China’s
Putin thanks Kim for North Koreans fighting in Ukraine
Newsdesk
Russia's Vladimir Putin has thanked Kim Jong Un for the courage of his troops who have been fighting in Ukraine on the Russian side.
The two leaders met on Wednesday in Beijing as China held one of its largest ever military parades, which commemorated 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Asia. It marked the first time the North Korean leader has attended an international gathering of world leaders. He rarely leaves North Korea, and usually only meets leaders one-on-one.
UAE warns Israel that annexing West Bank would cross 'red line'
The United Arab Emirates has warned Israel that annexing the occupied West Bank would cross a "red line" and undermine the spirit of the Abraham Accords that normalised relations between the two countries.
A senior Emirati official, Lana Nusseibeh, said such a move would be the death knell of the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry said it welcomed the UAE's position. The Israeli government has not commented. But Nusseibeh's remarks came after far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich unveiled a proposal for the annexation of approximately four-fifths of the West Bank.
global role while creating new international alliances.
Legal setbacks in US courts against his tariffs further highlight the domestic and international risks of his
unilateral approach. China’s military showcase thus underscores the potential costs and dangers of Trump’s trade-centric strategy.
Putin: Russia Will Achieve Goals Militarily if Ukraine Refuses Deal
President Vladimir Putin has said Russia is willing to fight to achieve all its objectives if Ukraine does not agree to a deal. He made the remarks in China after attending a huge military parade seen as a challenge to Donald Trump and the US-dominated world order. The US president has tried to persuade Putin to end the war, but the Russian leader, while praising Trump's "sincere
desire", has so far not done so. Visiting Kyiv, UK Defence Secretary John Healey told the BBC Trump had brought Putin to the table, and had not ruled out putting more pressure on him. Countries like the UK, he said, were willing "to put extra economic pressure on Putin... and to give extra aid to Ukraine so they can keep in the fight".
Russia, China Sign Deal For New Gas Pipeline In Major Political Win
Russia's Gazprom PJSC said it signed a legally binding agreement to build the long-anticipated Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline to China via Mongolia and would expand deliveries through other routes, in what will be seen by the Kremlin as a major political win.
Lisbon in shock after funicular crash leaves 15 dead
Portugal is in shock after 15 people lost their lives in the derailment of the 140-year-old Gloria funicular, a major tourist attraction in the capital Lisbon. Another 18 people were taken to hospital, five of them in a serious condition, according to the emergency services. Foreign nationals were among those killed in the crash, which took place around 18:05, although nationalities could not be confirmed, authorities said. Lisbon's mayor, Carlos Moedas, paid a visit to the hospital on Wednesday night, calling it a "tragic moment for the city". Portugal's government, which will host the mayor at a cabinet meeting on Thursday, has declared a day of national mourning.
China Parade Showcases Advanced Military Strength
China has unveiled a range of new weapons, drones and other military hardware in a massive parade that many see as a clear message to the United States and its allies. The event saw Xi Jinping host more than 20 foreign heads of state, including Russia's Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, both of whom rely on China for economic support and more. It was a display of Xi's growing power on the world stage, and of China's military prowess - the show included the "Guam killer" missile, the "loyal wingman" drone and even robotic wolves.
In comments made to Russian wires from Beijing, Chief Executive Officer Alexey Miller said the gas producer could ship as much as 50 billion cubic meters a year via the Power of Siberia 2 for 30 years. Miller said the price for the fuel will be lower than what Gazprom currently charges customers in Europe, according to the reports. Beijing has yet to confirm the detail of Miller's pronouncement. China's state-owned Xinhua News Agency, reporting on bilateral meetings, did not specifically mention the pipeline, though it reported that the two countries signed more than 20 cooperation agreements, including in the field of energy.

GST Overhaul: Items Cheaper, Costlier
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council on Wednesday approved a complete overhaul of India's tax consumption tax since its launch in 2017, slashing duties on household essentials, medicines, small cars and appliances and affecting everything from toothpaste and insurance to tractors and cement.
At Beijing’s Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, Russian President Vladimir Putin defended India amid rising US tariffs, cautioning that no
nation should attempt to “dominate” global politics. He acknowledged the growing influence of economic giants like India and China and stressed that punishing their leaders risks destabilizing their political careers.
GST Overhaul to Help Common Man, Farmers, Middle Class: PM Modi:
New Delhi: In a historic step toward overhauling India's indirect tax system, the GST Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Wednesday approved sweeping rate rationalisation reforms, cutting down the existing four-rate GST structure to just two slabs -- 5 per cent and 18 per cent. The Council scrapped the 12 per cent and 28 per cent tax slabs, implementing a simplified two-rate system aimed at reducing the burden on consumers and boosting economic activity. The reforms

P M Modi took to the social media platform X to applaud the move, stating: "During my Independence Day Speech, I had spoken about our intention to bring the Next-Generation reforms in GST. Vladimir Putin's remarks come against the backdrop of intensifying trade and geopolitical tensions. On August 27, US President Donald Trump's administration doubled tariffs on India to 50 percent.
Putin also referenced the West’s colonial past, saying the colonial era is over and nations cannot use a condescending tone with their partners. His remarks come after the Trump administration doubled tariffs on India to 50% on August 27, partly to penalize its Russian oil imports and partly under the “America First” policy. Trump’s trade adviser, Peter Navarro, criticized India for strengthening ties with Russia and China, calling PM Modi’s engagement with Putin and Xi Jinping a “shame.” India defended its oil trade with Russia, calling the US action unjustified, while experts see the tariffs as a setback to decades of US-India relations. Notably, India is the only country targeted by Trump’s secondary tariffs, despite China being a larger buyer of Russian crude.

US Economy On Brink Of Recession, Warns Moody's Chief Economist
US states accounting for nearly a third of the nation’s GDP are either in recession or at high risk, says Moody’s chief economist Mark Zandi, one of the first to predict the 2008 financial crisis. He warned that the impact will show up in higher everyday prices and job disruptions in sectors like food, goods, and transportation.
Zandi highlighted that while southern states remain the strongest, their growth is slowing. California and New York, which together make up over a fifth of US GDP, are holding steady, but recession risks are significant in states such as Wyoming, Montana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Kansas, and

Massachusetts.
Consumer spending in 2025 through July has barely increased from last year, the worst performance since 2008–09. Zandi also projects that inflation, currently at 2.7%, could rise toward 4% next year. Additional pressures, including US tariffs and housing market troubles, make the economy “very close” to a recession. His analysis showed that southern states are generally the strongest, but their growth is slowing. California and New York, which together account for over a fifth of U.S. GDP, are holding their own, and their stability is crucial for the national economy to avoid a downturn

Trump Asks US Supreme Court to Decide on Tariffs’ Legality
President Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to overturn a lower court decision that found many of his sweeping tariffs were illegal.
In a petition filed late on Wednesday, the administration asked the justices to quickly intervene to rule that the president has the power to impose such import taxes on foreign nations.
A divided US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit last week ruled 7-4 that the tariffs Trump brought in through an emergency economic powers act did not fall within the president's mandate and that setting levies was "a core Congressional
Kutch Desert Hosts Ambani-Adani Renewable Push

power". The case could upend Trump's economic and foreign policy agenda and force the US to refund billions in tariffs. Trump had justified the tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which gives the president the power to act against "unusual and extraordinary" threats. In April, Trump declared an economic emergency, arguing that a trade imbalance had undermined domestic manufacturing and was harmful to national security.
Lagarde Warns US Fed Independence Crucial for Global Economy
ECB President Christine Lagarde warned that undermining the US Federal Reserve’s independence would pose a serious risk to both the US and global economies. She said political interference in Fed decisions, especially on interest rates, could destabilize economic stability worldwide.
President Trump has repeatedly criticized Fed Chair Jerome Powell and attempted to fire Governor Lisa Cook over alleged mortgage misstatements. Trump seeks big rate cuts, while the Fed holds rates at 4.25–4.5% due to inflation concerns.
Lagarde stressed that removing governors would be difficult in practice, as the Supreme Court allows dismissal only for gross misconduct, and the Fed’s committee structure prevents easy control by the president. She highlighted that Fed autonomy is crucial for the stability of the world’s largest economy, warning that politicizing monetary policy would have “very worrying” global consequences.
India’s smallest chip will bring biggest change to world: PM Modi
New Delhi: (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the day is not far when India’s smallest chip will bring the biggest change in the world.
Inaugurating ‘Semicon India 2025’ in the national capital, the Prime Minister stressed that India is moving beyond just the backend of the semiconductor industry and is now building a full-stack ecosystem to become globally competitive and ‘Atmanirbhar’.
Addressing the global gathering of industry leaders, innovators, and delegates from over 40 countries, PM Modi said, “The world trusts India. The world believes in India. The world is ready to build the semiconductor future with India. In the semiconductor world, oil is often called black gold, while chips are considered digital diamonds.”
Prime Minister Modi underlined that India’s semiconductor effort is not just about manufacturing chips but creating a complete ecosystem that will redefine the global industry.
The Prime Minister compared the importance of semiconductors in the 21st century to the role of oil in the last century.
“Oil shaped the last century, and the fate of the world was tied to oil wells. But in the 21st century, power is concentrated in the small chip. Though tiny, the chip has the strength to drive the world’s progress at great speed,” the PM Modi said.
Prime Minister Modi added that the global semiconductor market, currently worth 600 billion dollars, will cross the 1 trillion dollar mark in the coming years, and India is poised to play a significant role in it.
Highlighting India’s strong economic performance, PM Modi pointed out that the country registered 7.8 per cent GDP growth in the April–June quarter, exceeding global expectations.
“This growth is visible across all sectors and shows the strength of India’s economy,” the Prime Minister said. Welcoming participants to the event, PM Modi noted that the presence of experts from more than 40 countries, along with India’s innovation and youth power, sends out one clear message: “The world trusts India and is ready to build the future of semiconductors with India.”
The global semiconductor market, currently worth 600 billion dollars, will cross the 1 trillion dollar mark in the coming years, and India is poised to play a significant role in it.
Trump Moves to Oust VOA Journalists
The Trump administration has moved to terminate almost 500 employees of federally funded news organisation Voice of America (VOA).
The step is the latest in President Donald Trump's drive to strip back the outlet, which the White House has accused of being "radical".
Acting CEO of VOA's parent agency, Kari Lake, said the decision would "help reduce the federal bureaucracy, improve agency service, and save the American people more of their hardearned money." A union representing employees called the step illegal in a statement to the New York Times.
VOA was set up during World War Two to counter Nazi propaganda, and has become a major global broadcaster.

Madan Lal: India Favourites, Afghanistan Emerging Threat
Pakistan have dropped both Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 squad
Pakistan’s performances in the multinational tournaments after reaching the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup have taken a dip, there has been a steep rise in issues both on-field and off-field with selections additionally there has been a constant churn of coaches and captains in the squads that have been sent to the tournament, as a result instability creeped in and Pakistan has not been a top team which it once was and Afghanistan in meantime have risen quite sharply
and former Indian cricketer Madan Lal predicted that while India are favourites for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, Afghanistan can be seen as the side who can take over Pakistan’s spot. “India is a strong favourite [side] due to their skilled team. The unpredictability of the T20 format and the performances of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, noting that Afghanistan is currently playing well. Afghanistan is seen as a potential challenger to Pakistan, whose current performance and confidence levels are questioned. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are considered strong contenders,” Madan Lal said, speaking to ANI.
'Broke Every Rule In The Book': Lalit Modi Drops Stunning IPL Bombshell
Former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi claimed that he broke broadcasting rules during the first match of the tournament back in 2008. Kolkata Knight Riders took on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the first ever IPL encounter and Modi said that he was willing to 'break every rule in the book' given the magnitude of the occasion. Modi claimed that he was worried about the reach that Sony Network had at that moment and decided to override their exclusive broadcasting rights. Instead, he instructed other broadcasters as well as news channels to go live with the match at the same time. "Everything, everything was dependent on that one game. I broke every rule in the book that day. I signed the contract, an exclusive contract with Sony, but Sony didn't have the reach. I said open the signal. Now it was available everywhere, right? And I told all the broadcasters who lost out, all of you, all news channels, go live," Lalit told Michael Clarke during a recent podcast.
Mitchell Starc retires from T20Is to prioritise Test and ODI cricket
Prolific Australian fast-bowler
Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20I cricket, the 35-year-old announced on Tuesday. Starc, who has not played a T20I since the 2024 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean, will remain available for Tests, ODIs and domestic T20 leagues, including the Indian Premier League.
Aakash Chopra Critiques Pant: ‘Like Throwing Out Fly from Milk’
Rishabh Pant’s T20 numbers have often been inconsistent, both in the IPL and for India, yet he was India’s third-highest run-scorer in last year’s T20 World Cup, which India won. Aakash Chopra highlighted that while Pant’s strike rate and average drop when batting at positions 4–7, his contribution in the World Cup is overlooked.
Chopra compared the neglect to “a fly taken out of milk and thrown away,” noting that IPL form may be a reason, but ignoring him entirely is surprising. Pant, the most expensive IPL player at Rs 27 crore, recently moved from Delhi Capitals to Lucknow as captain, attracting extra scrutiny given his mixed leadership record in Delhi.
PM Modi Praises Pujara for Test Cricket Excellence
Aweek after his retirement from all forms of cricket, Cheteshwar Pujara shared a letter from none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi who wrote to the former India batting stalwart, congratulating him for a stellar career.
Pujara, who retired last Sunday, scored 7195 runs in 103 Tests with 19 centuries for India. Sharing the PM’s letter, he stated, “I was honoured to receive a letter of appreciation on my retirement from our Honourable Prime Minister. The warm sentiments expressed are much appreciated. While I venture into my second innings, I cherish every memory on the field, and all the love and appreciation I
have received. Thank you Sir.”
“In an age dominated by shorter formats of cricket, you were a reminder of the beauty of the longer format of the game. Your unflappable temperament and ability to bat long hours with great concentration made you the fulcrum of the Indian batting line-up. Your outstanding cricketing career is dotted with moments of remarkable skill and resolve, especially in challenging conditions overseas,” Modi wrote in the letter.
“For example, fans will always remember instances like the Tests in Australia, when you laid the foundation for India’s historic first-ever series win on Australian soil! Standing tall against one of the most potent bowling attacks, you showed what it meant to shoulder responsibility for the team,” the letter went on. “Your passion for the game was also reflected in the fact that even while being an international cricketer, you made it a point to play firstclass cricket, whether it was for Saurashtra, or abroad. Your long association with Saurashtra cricket and your contribution to putting Rajkot on the cricketing map will remain a source of immense pride for every youngster in the region,” added the PM.

The court said Trump overstepped his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act but postponed enforcement until October, keeping tariffs temporarily in place.

The Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) has postponed its much-anticipated India Weekend in New York, originally set for September 12. Billed as India’s grandest cultural showcase abroad, the festival was to feature music, dance, art, fashion, and cuisine. Nita Ambani called the delay “deeply regrettable” but stressed it was “a pause, not a cancellation,” promising the event would return. Organizers offered refunds, as speculation links the postponement to U.S.–India trade tensions.

PM Modi Sends 'No Compromise On Terror' Message
At the SCO Summit in Tianjin, PM Modi condemned Pakistan for backing terrorism, citing the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. He praised countries supporting India and stressed that terrorism threatens all humanity. Modi called for no double standards in fighting terror and highlighted security, peace, and stability as key pillars for development, urging global unity against terrorism.
"With respect to the first pillar, S for Security, I want to say security, peace and stability are critical for every country's development. And terrorism, separatism and radicalism are big challenges on this path. Terrorism is not important for any one country, but a challenge for all humanity. That's why India has stressed unity in the war against terror," he said.
Modi, Putin, Xi Share Warm Moments at SCO
As over 20 foreign leaders gathered in China's Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin shared lighter moments with a handshake and a hug. The two leaders, who will be holding a bilateral meeting later today on the sidelines of the Summit, met for the first time after the US imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India over its Russian oil imports. PM Modi, in a post on X, shared pictures with the Russian leader, saying it is "always a delight to meet him".
US Giants Hit by Swadeshi Backlash Over Tariffs
Anti-US sentiment is rising in India after Trump imposed 50% tariffs over India’s Russian oil purchases. Yoga guru Ramdev urged a boycott of US brands like Pepsi, McDonald’s, and KFC, while PM Modi promoted “swadeshi” or local products. Trump defended the tariffs on Truth Social, calling India’s oil trade unfair, while India condemned them as “unjustified.” US companies like PepsiCo and McDonald’s face potential losses in India, a market critical to their global revenues.
"Not a single Indian should be seen at the counters of Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Subway, KFC, or McDonald's. There should be such a massive boycott," he said, adding, "If this happens, chaos will ensue in America."
Xi: India-China Friendship Key
During a bilateral meeting at the SCO Summit in Tianjin, Chinese President Xi Jinping called it the “right choice” for India and China to be friends, highlighting their shared responsibilities as major global players. He welcomed PM Modi, recalling their last meeting in Kazan, and emphasized longterm cooperation, peace, and regional prosperity. Modi stressed mutual trust and respect, citing resumed Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and direct flights as steps to strengthen ties.

MUMBAI: - The Indian rupee is likely to remain under stress on Monday after falling past the 88-per-dollar barrier last week, with traders saying the move has emboldened speculators to press harder against the currency and keep downside risks alive.
The 1-month non-deliverable forward suggests the rupee will open little changed from 88.1950 on Friday, when the currency sank to a record low of 88.3075.

Sikh Man Performing 'Gatka'
Shot Dead by LAPD
A 36-year-old Sikh man, Gurpreet Singh, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police after wielding a large blade in downtown Los Angeles on July 13. LAPD footage shows Singh performing Gatka, a traditional Sikh martial art, near Crypto.com Arena while holding a machete later identified as a khanda. Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man swinging a weapon at passersby. Singh abandoned his vehicle, attempted to harm himself, and threw a bottle at officers. He drove erratically during a police pursuit, eventually colliding with a police vehicle near Figueroa and 12th Streets.
After refusing repeated commands to drop the weapon, Singh charged at officers with the khanda and was shot. A two-foot machete was recovered at the scene.
Singh was taken to a hospital but died from bullet wounds. No civilians or officers were injured in the incident. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
"No Permanent Friends Or Enemies": Rajnath Singh
Speaking at a defence summit in 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that in global affairs, there are "no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests," highlighting India’s focus on national priorities amid ongoing tariff tensions with the United States.
The minister noted that the world is changing rapidly, presenting new challenges every day, including pandemics, terrorism, and regional conflicts. He described the current century as the most unstable and challenging in modern history. In
this context, Singh stressed that selfreliance, or atmanirbharta, is no longer optional—it is essential for survival and progress. What was once seen as a privilege has now become a necessity. Singh highlighted that India does not consider any country an enemy; instead, the nation prioritizes the interests of its farmers, entrepreneurs, and citizens. He further pointed out that shifting global geopolitics have made external dependency in defence untenable. Building domestic capabilities is vital not only for national security but also for sustaining economic growth.
"No Option But To Have 'Atmanirbharta' In Defence"
India must reduce dependence on foreign suppliers to safeguard both its security and economy, making indigenous capabilities a necessity for survival and progress.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stressed that self-reliance, or atmanirbharta, in defence is no longer optional but essential. Highlighting the rapidly changing global landscape, he said India must reduce dependence on foreign suppliers to safeguard both its security and economy, making indigenous capabilities a necessity for survival and progress.
India's warships will be made in India, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Saturday at annual defence summit, underlining a renewed push towards an 'aatmanirbhar Bharat', or 'self-reliant India', amid global economic and financial uncertainties and military challenges. "In 2014, our defence export was less than Rs 700 crore. Today it has increased to nearly Rs 24,000 crore, reaching a record level. This shows that India is no longer just a buyer, but is becoming an exporter," Mr Singh said.

Eat This, Lower Cancer Risk by 25%, Say Experts
A growing number of researches indicate that consuming more plant-based foods could crucially play a significant role in minimizing cancer risk. A new paper published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition supports this evidence, indicating that vegetarians and vegans may have meaningful protection from several cancers, including less common types.
While past research has mainly concentrated on common cancers such as breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer, this study focused to go further. To bridge this information gap, researchers examined whether vegetarian diets will offer protection against a variety of cancer types, not just the more common ones but also the rare types. The study experimented whether vegetarian diets, compared to nonvegetarian diets, could have protective benefits for rarer cancers as well.
The Adventist Health Study-2
The research team drew findings from the Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2) cohort, a large scale project that involves participants across the United States and Canada between 2002 and 2007. The participants were volunteer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, most of them already follow vegetarian or plant-based consumption. This provided researchers a unique opportunity to analyze dietary patterns in a group.
A total of 95,863 people primarily took part, but after excluding those with preexisting cancers, incomplete information, or residency outside covered cancer registries, the final analysis involved 79,468 volunteera. Each volunteer finished a
Heart Risk: 1 Serving Raises Danger 18%
detailed mailed questionnaire, which involved a validated food survey to trace consuming habits from last year. To make sure of accuracy, researchers supplemented this with 24-hour dietary recalls from a subgroup of 1,100 participants and tested dietary biomarkers. Minly, the study accounted for many elements that could influence cancer risk such as age, sex, race, and other lifestyle elements enabling them to strengthen the accuracy of the results.
Results: Who Benefited the Most
Overall, vegetarian diets were associated with lower cancer risk, but the degree of advantage varied depending on the specific diet type.
• Vegans with a 24% lower cancer risk compared to nonvegetarians.
• Lacto-ovo vegetarians (those who consume dairy and eggs) had a 9% lower risk.
• Pesco-vegetarians (those who include fish and avoid meat) saw an 11% reduction.
When looking at medium-frequency cancers, vegans once again had the strongest protection, with a 23% reduction in risk, followed by lacto-ovo vegetarians (18%) and pesco-vegetarians (13%).
For certain types of cancers, the differences were especially striking:
The advent of healthy eating and living has led to people introducing seemingly ‘healthy’ ingredients or food items into their diets. However, according to Dr Dmitry Yaranov, MD (cardiology), there is one thing that we unknowingly consume that is silently damaging the heart more than cholesterol. Let's find out what it is:
Dr Yaranov pointed out that as a cardiologist, he sees heart disease caused by more than just cholesterol. Writing, “The #1 thing silently destroying your heart (and it’s NOT cholesterol),” he revealed that there’s a common additive – hiding in drinks, snacks, sauces, and ‘healthy’ foods – that’s hurting hearts and fueling
Younger vegans (under age 65) had a 43% lower risk of prostate cancer, though this advantage was not seen in older vegans.
Younger vegans also had a 31% lower risk of breast cancer, with older vegans indicating a similar but less precise trends.
For lymphomas, older vegans had a 56% lower risk, while younger vegans did not indicate a major difference.
Transitioning to a Plant-Based
Lifestyle
For those interested in adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet, planning is a key factor.
• Protein can be received from beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, and whole grains.
• Iron from plants should be combined with vitamin C-rich foods, like citrus or peppers, to enhance absorption.
• Vitamin B12, vitamin D, and omega-3s might need supplementation or fortified foods for those avoiding out all animal based products.
Health professionals highly recommend a gradual transition rather than a switch overnight . This approach benefits the digestive system to adapt to higher fiber intake while making it easier to discover new meals and build sustainable habits.
diabetes: Sugar.
But how does sugar manage to cause such harm? According to the cardiologist, “Just one serving a day of sugar is linked to an 18 percent higher heart disease risk. Two or more? 21 percent higher – even in people who work out.”
‘Sugar is tied to over 1 million new heart cases’ According to the cardiologist, in 2025, researchers showed that high intake of sugar, especially from ultra-processed foods, raises heart disease risk by 17 percent, coronary artery disease by 23 percent, and stroke by 9 percent. “Globally, it’s tied to over 1 million new heart cases and 2.2 million new type 2 diabetes cases in a year.
US vs India: Economist Calls It “Mouse vs Elephant”
In an interview with Russia Today, Wolff said that India will find other places to sell its exports if the US is shut off to India, and the move will only strengthen the BRICS nations.
American economist Richard Wolff has criticised U.S. tariffs on India, calling them selfdefeating and a boost to BRICS. Speaking to Russia Today, Wolff said Washington is “acting like the world’s tough guy” but only “shooting itself in the foot,” as India will simply redirect exports to BRICS nations. “The U.S. telling India what to do is like a mouse hitting an elephant,” he remarked. Trump’s administration doubled tariffs to 50% on Indian goods to punish New Delhi for buying Russian oil. Wolff warned such actions only strengthen BRICS, which now includes ten countries producing 35% of global output, compared to the G7’s 28%. He called it a “historic moment” where U.S. policies are accelerating an alternative economic bloc. India slammed the move as “unfair and unjustified,” while Trump dismissed BRICS as “dead” and even threatened 100% tariffs if the group pursued a common currency.
New Rule: One-Year Wait for F-1 Transfers
International students in the U.S. will soon face stricter rules under new F-1 visa policies. Students must now complete at least one academic year at their initial institution before transferring, reducing flexibility for those wishing to switch schools early. The rules, expected within one to two months, will mainly impact students arriving for the fall semester. Graduate students face tougher restrictions: pursuing consecutive degrees at the same level, such as two master’s programs, will no longer be allowed without leaving the U.S. and reapplying for a new visa. Additionally, students must remain enrolled at the institution listed on their I-20 at the time of visa approval, preventing program or university changes after arrival. Post-study opportunities are also affected—students finishing Optional Practical Training (OPT) will have only 30 days to remain in the U.S., down from 60. Analysts say the changes could deter international applicants, especially from India.

US Offers $1,000 Police Bonus for Migrant Arrests
Officers deputized to arrest migrants under a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement partnership are eligible for the payments, the Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday.
WASHINGTON, DC — The Trump administration is offering quarterly bonuses of $500 to $1,000 to state and local police officers who meet immigrationarrest targets, intensifying its crackdown on undocumented migrants. Officers enrolled in the 287(g) program, which deputizes local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws, are eligible, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Currently, about 8,500 officers in 40 states participate in the program, with 2,000 more in training. The bonuses are part of broader “monetary performance awards” covering salaries, benefits, and some overtime costs for officers assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE is also offering hiring bonuses up to $50,000 to attract new officers and agents.
“By joining forces with ICE, you’re becoming part of a national effort to ensure the safety of every American family,” said ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan. Critics warn the plan could “weaponize” local law enforcement. Political consultant Mike Madrid called it a “bounty” that federalizes state and local police.
The initiative is funded by the July Republican-led spending bill, which allocated over $150 billion for immigration and border security. Between January and August, ICE made roughly 168,000 arrests nationwide, with deportations totaling about 150,000.

Life and health insurance premiums could be exempted from GST. The reforms aim to boost middleclass consumption, offset revenue losses of around Rs 50,000 crore, and stimulate economic growth. SBI Research estimates the changes, combined with recent income tax cuts, could raise consumption by Rs 5.31 lakh crore, or 1.6% of GDP. Opposition-ruled states, including Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Bengal, have raised concerns over potential revenue shortfalls, suggesting additional duties on luxury and sin goods to maintain state compensation. The council is also expected to discuss rate rationalisation, compensation cess, and insurance taxation.
The GST overhaul is part of the government’s push for structural reform, ease of living, and its broader “aatmanirbhar” economic agenda.
Russia Offers India Bigger Oil Discounts Amid US Heat
The price of Russian oil has dropped to a discount of $3 to $4 per barrel for India, as New Delhi still bears the brunt of US tariffs. According to a Bloomberg report, the price of Russia's Ural grade is being offered at a lower price for cargoes that will load in late September and October.
The Trump administration last week doubled India's tariffs to 50 per cent to punish it for buying Russian oil and fuelling the Ukraine war. New Delhi, in 2022, had become a major importer of Russian crude at the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. Now, after repeated

criticism from Washington, India finds itself closer to Moscow and Beijing, in a defiant show of ties.
Even at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Russia and India share a "special" relationship. In a similar vein he also met Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the two countries pledged to be partners, not rivals. White House advisor Peter Navarro had launched a scathing criticism of India by saying, "Before Putin invaded Ukraine, India didn't buy Russian oil to speak of- very, very small amounts. What happened? Now, Russian refiners provide discounts, India refines it, and then sells it at a premium to Europe, Africa and Asia. It fuels the Russian war machine."
Trump Jabs at Xi Over Putin, Kim Invitations
Donald Trump questioned whether China would acknowledge the American soldiers who "gave their blood" to help liberate the country during World War II.
New Delhi — US President Donald Trump criticized Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin attended China’s largest-ever military parade. Trump accused Xi of “conspiring against” the United States and questioned whether China would honor the American soldiers who died helping liberate the country in World War II.
“Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
China’s parade marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, showcasing advanced land, sea, and air weaponry, including drones and precision warfare equipment. Warplanes and helicopters flew in formation, with much of the military hardware displayed publicly for the first time.
Xi Jinping called China “unstoppable” and pledged peaceful development, urging the People’s Liberation Army to build world-class forces to safeguard sovereignty and unity. He emphasized global cooperation and human progress, framing China’s rise as part of a shared future for humanity.
The parade was China’s first major military display since 2019, commemorating its victory over Japan in World War II.
"Stop Singling Out India...": US Expert On Trump's Russia Oil Charges
US strategic affairs expert Ashley J. Tellis has urged Washington to stop “singling out” India over Donald Trump’s frustrations in brokering peace in the Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking to NDTV, Mr Tellis said multiple actors complicate Trump’s peace efforts, not just New Delhi. The Trump administration recently doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50% over its Russian oil imports, even though China remains Moscow’s biggest buyer. Trump’s advisor Peter Navarro went as far as calling the conflict “Modi’s war,” blaming India for fueling Moscow’s aggression. Tellis countered that neither PM Modi nor Trump can bring peace as long as Vladimir Putin refuses to abandon his goals. Trump, meanwhile, voiced “disappointment” in Putin and pledged new measures to reduce casualties.
Earlier, Trump met Putin in Alaska and held talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky, but expected follow-up meetings stalled as Moscow and Kyiv disagreed on the agenda.

PM Modi Urges SCO Members to Join India’s Development Journey
"Today, India is exploring new opportunities. We invite you to be a part of India's journey of development," said PM Narendra Modi
At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, PM Narendra Modi emphasized India’s guiding principles of “reform, perform, and transform” and invited member nations to join the country’s growth journey. Highlighting SCO’s focus on Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity, he stressed that strong connectivity fosters trade, trust, and development, citing projects like Chabahar Port and the International North-South Economic Corridor.
Modi also urged members to uphold sovereignty in connectivity initiatives, support anti-terrorism efforts, and welcomed SCO’s new centres addressing organised crime, drug trafficking, and cybersecurity. This visit marks Modi’s first to China in seven years, amid evolving India-China relations.
Germany Rebukes Trump, Vows Stronger Ties with India
Germany has rejected US President Trump’s call for trade sanctions on India, despite his 50% tariffs and appeals to other nations. Foreign Minister Johannes Wedefeld emphasized strengthening political, economic, and cultural ties with India. Wedefeld arrived in Bengaluru to visit ISRO and will meet senior leaders in New Delhi. He highlighted India’s strategic role in the Indo-Pacific and its contributions to a rules-based international order. Germany’s stance marks a diplomatic setback for the US, signaling Europe’s commitment to deepening relations with India amid rising trade tensions. During his visit, Wedefeld stressed India’s role as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region, noting cooperation across security, technology, and workforce development. “India’s voice is strategically important not only in the Indo-Pacific but globally,” he said.
“7.8% Growth Despite Challenges Driven by Economic Self-Interest”: PM Modi
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted India’s 7.8% GDP growth in the first quarter of 2025-26, attributing the performance to domestic resilience despite “challenges driven by economic self-interest,” a clear reference to US tariffs on Indian goods. Speaking at the Semicon India Conference in Delhi, Modi said the economy “outperformed every expectation, estimate, and forecast,” with growth visible across manufacturing, services, agriculture, and construction.
India’s GDP growth of 7.8% surpassed the estimated 6.5% and is 1.3 percentage points higher than the same quarter last year. This represents the fastest quarterly rise in five quarters, behind only 8.4% in January-March 2024.
PM Modi said the Indian economy "outperformed every expectation, estimate and forecast".
Modi emphasized that this trajectory is propelling India toward becoming the third-largest global economy,
Trump Aide: India Should Side with US, Not Russia
In his earlier remarks, Navarro had called India the "Maharaja of tariffs," claiming New Delhi's tariffs are among the highest among major economies and the country refuses to acknowledge it.
Washington: Peter Navarro, US President Trump’s trade adviser, slammed Prime Minister Modi’s meetings with Russia’s Putin and China’s Xi at the SCO summit, calling it a “shame” and urging India to side with the US instead of Russia. Navarro repeatedly criticized India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, claiming it funds Putin’s war in Ukraine and calling India a “Kremlin laundromat.” He also defended Trump’s punitive tariffs on Indian exports, accusing India of unfair trade practices and profiting at the expense of ordinary citizens.
India has defended its Russian oil imports, saying they help stabilize domestic energy prices. The country became a major buyer of Russian crude after the 2022 Ukraine invasion and G7-imposed price caps allowed India to purchase discounted supplies, which it processed and exported.
countering US President Donald Trump’s “dead economy” remark. Trump last month imposed a 25% reciprocal tariff on India, plus an additional 25% penalty for its Russian oil imports, accusing India of fueling Moscow’s war in Ukraine. On social media, Trump claimed the bilateral trade has been “totally one-sided” and urged India to reduce tariffs on US goods.
India has rejected these claims, calling the US tariffs “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India’s Russian oil imports are market-driven and aimed at securing energy for 1.4 billion people. The ministry added that India will take all necessary measures to protect its national interests while continuing its economic growth momentum.
Team Trump: “Two Great Nations Will Resolve India Tariff Issue”
Washington: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Trump administration expects “two great nations will get this solved” regarding trade friction with India. He criticized India’s continued Russian oil purchases, claiming they fund Moscow’s war in Ukraine, and called PM Modi’s SCO summit meetings with Putin and Xi “largely performative.”
Bessent noted India-US trade talks and high Indian tariffs contributed to the US imposing 50% duties on Indian goods. He also warned that additional sanctions on Russia remain possible if the Kremlin continues its attacks in Ukraine.
Trump Plans 200% Tariff on Imported Medicines, Indian Companies at Risk
US President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to impose a 200% tariff on imported medicines, aiming to bring pharmaceutical production back to the United States. However, the administration has indicated it may delay implementation by 12–18 months to give companies time to adjust to the new rules.
Potential Impact on India
India, a major exporter of generic medicines, could face significant challenges if the tariffs are imposed. Indian pharmaceutical companies may see a decline in exports and revenue. Some reports suggest that the Trump administration is primarily targeting medicines imported from China.
Tariff Objective: Boost Domestic Production
The move is intended to pressure pharma companies to manufacture in the US, which would be exempt from the tariff. Major firms like Johnson & Johnson and Roche have already announced plans to increase domestic investment in response to this policy.
Possible Consequences
Experts warn that high tariffs could increase drug prices in the US and
lead to shortages, particularly for lowmargin generic medicines. Estimates suggest that even a 25% tariff could raise US drug costs by $51 billion.
Industry and Investor Reactions
Pharma companies and industry groups have criticized the move, citing concerns that tariffs could harm R&D and innovation. Some investors and analysts, however, believe the 200% tariff may be more of a negotiation strategy and might not be fully implemented.
The proposed tariffs reflect the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to boost domestic production while addressing trade imbalances, though they could have major implications for global pharmaceutical trade, particularly for India.

Indian American Woman caught Shoplifting Diamond Bracelet in NJ
Zofeen Maqsood
Barely months after the shoplifting incident involving an Indian tourist at Target made headlines, another case involving an Indianorigin woman has come to light -- this time in New Jersey.
The accused, identified as Yogini Verma, was caught in a video uploaded to the YouTube channel Great Body Cam. The footage shows her walking away not with everyday merchandise, but with a diamond tennis bracelet worth $2,300.According to authorities, Verma visited jewelry retailer Mejuri at Short Hills Mall. Shortly after she left, staff discovered the bracelet was missing. She managed to exit the store and drive off in her car, but police soon intercepted her at a traffic stop. In the video, Verma initially denied taking anything, insisting she had put the item back. She even offered to let officers search her belongings, repeating, “I have nothing on me, you can check me.” Even after repeated questioning, Verma tried to tell the officers that she had no bracelet in her possession. However, the bracelet was soon discovered on her wrist! Confronted, with the evidence, she tried to claim she had absentmindedly walked out wearing it. Eventually, she admitted to the theft, apologized, and asked if she could call her husband.
A Pattern Uncovered
The story didn’t end with the bracelet. What lay undiscovered in the car was a mountain of evidence. When officers searched Verma’s Tesla SUV, they uncovered a stash of unpaid merchandise from highend retailers including Nordstrom, Anthropologie, J. Crew, Macy’s, and Williams Sonoma. Many of the items still carried security tags and labels, with no receipts in sight. At first, Verma dismissed questions about the items, but later conceded that much of the merchandise had been stolen that very day. The car also contained hundreds of empty shopping bags, which she claimed were just “grocery bags.” Verma was formally charged with shoplifting the diamond bracelet and possession of stolen goods. She was later released pending a court appearance. Authorities noted that the incident actually took place on January 1, this year prior to the viral Target case, but the police bodycam footage was only made public recently.
Community Questions
The case has reignited discussions about the uncomfortable trend of members of the “model minority” community being implicated in crimes. Both of the recent highprofile cases involved Indian-origin

women from seemingly affluent backgrounds, fluent in English, and fully aware of U.S. laws — yet still attempting to outwit the system. In Verma’s case, the contrast was especially jarring: she drove a luxury Tesla SUV, wore expensive coats, and was surrounded by high-end possessions. Yet she allegedly resorted to shoplifting. The community has often come ahead during such incidents and have voiced that a majority of Indians in the United States are law-abiding, tax-paying, highly educated individuals in highnet worth bracket but such cases popping up with regularity maligns the reputation – especially at a time when immigrants are been seen in a different light.
Shoplifting Laws in the U.S.
Definition:
Shoplifting is generally defined as the willful concealment or theft of goods from a retail store without paying for them.
Classification: Depending on the value of items stolen, it can be charged as a misdemeanor (usually under $1,000) or a felony (over $1,000).
Penalties:
• Misdemeanor shoplifting can lead to fines, restitution, community service, and up to 1 year in jail.
• Felony shoplifting may carry heavier fines and prison terms that can extend to several years.
• Additional Consequences: Offenders may face civil lawsuits from retailers, loss of immigration benefits for noncitizens, and long-term damage to personal and professional reputation.
• Under NJ law (N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11), theft of merchandise valued over $500 is treated as a felony offense and can carry penalties including prison sentences and significant fines.

CBP Enforces Trump’s Executive Order Ending De Minimis Loophole
HiIndia Newsdesk
WASHINGTON , DC— U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has begun enforcing President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order ending the de minimis loophole, a pathway long exploited by criminals to move fentanyl, counterfeit goods, and unvetted imports into the United States without duties.
“CBP is ready to enforce,” said Rodney Scott, Commissioner of CBP. “For too long, this loophole handed criminal networks a free pass to flood America with fentanyl, fake goods, and illegal shipments. Those days are over. We are securing the border, restoring fairness to trade, and protecting American families.”
Advance Warning and Implementation
The action follows months of preparation.
On April 2, President Trump suspended de minimis for China and Hong Kong through Executive Orders 14256 and 14257 and signaled global suspension.
On July 30, after being advised systems were ready, Executive Order 14324 directed worldwide enforcement effective August 29.

El Paso Border Patrol Warns of Smuggler Misinformation
EL PASO, TX – The U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector is warning the public about a rise in false information spread by smuggling organizations on social media.
Criminal groups are deliberately misleading vulnerable individuals with deceptive claims about changes to asylum and immigration policies in order to lure them into dangerous and illegal smuggling operations.
“These criminal networks are putting lives at risk by spreading lies to exploit people for profit,” said El Paso Sector Interim Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar. “They use social media to create false hope, but the reality is these journeys often end in tragedy.”
The U.S. Border Patrol emphasizes that immigration laws have not changed. Anyone attempting to enter the United States illegally through the El Paso Sector—or any area between ports of entry—faces arrest, prosecution, and removal. The public is strongly urged not to trust smugglers or rely on rumors and false messages online. The only safe and legal way to seek entry into the United States is through the official immigration process.
Do not trust smugglers. Do not believe the lies on social media. Stay informed. Stay safe. U.S. Customs and Border Protection encourages community assistance. Suspicious activity can be reported anonymously by calling 1-800635-2509.
in August to foreign posts, carriers, brokers, and postal operators, including instructions for using qualified third parties to collect and remit duties.
Ninety-five percent of shipments, managed by FedEx, UPS, DHL, and other carriers, have already adapted with minimal disruption. Postal services, such as Royal Mail, resumed operations after brief system updates.
“This change has been months in the making, and we are fully prepared,” said Susan S. Thomas, Acting Executive
Assistant Commissioner for CBP’s Office of Trade. “The only thing ending on August 29 is the pathway criminals used to exploit America’s borders.”
Closing a Criminal Pipeline
The loophole had grown into a global pipeline: shipments surged from 134 million in 2015 to 1.36 billion in 2024, over 4 million packages daily. In FY 2024 alone, de minimis shipments accounted for 98% of narcotics seizures by case count, 97% of counterfeit goods seizures (over 31 million items),
U.S. Seniors Face New Driving License Regulations
Starting September
The sight of an 80-year-old behind the wheel isn’t unusual anymore—and that’s exactly why Washington is stepping in.
Beginning September 2025, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will require new ability-based testing for drivers starting at age 70. The goal isn’t punishment or age limits, but smarter oversight that balances safety with independence.
easily, while someone older might face restrictions—it’s ability, not age, that matters.
One of the most debated provisions is a reporting system. Family, doctors, or even neighbors can flag concerns, triggering medical evaluations or road tests. Critics cite privacy risks, but similar programs in states like California and Illinois have helped prevent accidents.
Nearly 48 million Americans over 65 hold a valid driver’s license, a number that keeps growing as baby boomers age. Many want to stay mobile, but research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows aging can affect reflexes, vision, and cognition. The challenge: protect road safety without sidelining capable seniors.
Think of this as “graduated licensing” in reverse. Beginning at 70, renewals will include vision checks, reactiontime testing, and optional refresher courses. Oversight increases with age, with the most rigorous reviews starting at 87. A healthy 75-year-old may pass
Because licensing is statecontrolled, implementation will vary. Some states may offer telehealth screenings; others will require in-person visits. California has already published a “Senior Guide,” while other states will roll out at different paces. Seniors are encouraged to check their DMV websites for details.
Failing a test won’t always mean losing the keys. Restricted licenses may limit driving to daylight, local roads, or slower zones—allowing independence while reducing risk. For those who eventually must stop driving, today’s options are broader: Uber and Lyft senior features, specialized shuttles, reduced-fare public transit, and resources from the U.S. Administration for Community Living. This law isn’t about restricting seniors— it’s about adapting to an aging America. Mobility equals independence, and by focusing on ability rather than age, the DOT hopes to preserve both freedom and safety.
and 77% of health and safety seizures. Investigators found fentanyl in mail averaging 90% purity, compared to less than 10% at land borders.
Protecting Consumers and Businesses
Legitimate trade continues through secure channels. Long-standing exemptions remain for personal letters, gifts under $100, and personal travel items under $200. When de minimis was ended for China and Hong Kong earlier this year, industry quickly adjusted without disrupting lawful commerce.
Delivering on the President’s Promise
President Trump acted years ahead of the statutory repeal set for 2027. “With this action, we are putting secure, lawful trade first,” Thomas said. “The message is clear: America’s borders are not open to criminals or counterfeiters — and CBP is ready to enforce the law.” CBP, the nation’s largest law enforcement organization with over 65,000 personnel, remains America’s frontline in securing safe trade and travel while protecting economic prosperity.
Congressman Krishnamoorthi
Condemns Bay Area Temple Attack
SANTA CLARA, CA – US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has strongly condemned the recent break-in and vandalism at the Bay Area Shiv Durga Temple, calling for swift action against those responsible.
Visiting the temple on August 30, Krishnamoorthi expressed solidarity with the Hindu American community, saying he condemned the attack “in the strongest terms possible” and urged that the perpetrators “be brought to justice immediately.” He also pledged support to help the temple “get back on its feet.”
The burglary occurred on August 28, when intruders stole a donation box and religious ornaments — the second such incident since January 2024.
Highlighting the rise in attacks on Hindu temples nationwide, Krishnamoorthi called them “abhorrent acts of violence.”
He cited recent incidents, including: Anti-India and anti-Hindu graffiti at a Greenwood, Indiana temple (August).
A shooting at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah (June). Vandalism at a Chino Hills, California temple (March).

DOJ and DHS Launch Cross-Agency Initiative to Tackle Trade Fraud
WASHINGTON, DC- The Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a crossagency Trade Fraud Task Force to bring stronger enforcement against importers and others who attempt to defraud the United States. This Task Force builds on existing DOJ coordination and leverages the expertise of the Civil and Criminal Divisions, along with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), to pursue violators who evade tariffs, duties, or attempt to smuggle prohibited goods. The initiative underscores the Administration’s commitment to protecting honest American businesses and workers.
On Inauguration Day, President Trump introduced the America First Trade Policy, designed to promote investment, strengthen U.S. industry and technology, and defend economic and national security. Ensuring compliance with trade laws—including antidumping and countervailing duties and Section 301 tariffs—is central to this policy. The Task Force will advance these
goals through civil enforcement under the Tariff Act of 1930, the False Claims Act, and, where appropriate, criminal prosecutions and asset seizures.
Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate emphasized that ending unfair trade practices supports American manufacturing and jobs. Fraudulent import practices not only deprive the government of critical revenue but also destabilize domestic industries, erode consumer trust, and endanger national security. Many of these schemes are backed by foreign adversaries seeking

to harm U.S. markets.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti highlighted that trade fraud “is not a victimless crime” and pledged to deploy every tool available to hold offenders accountable. The DOJ’s Commercial Litigation Branch has already secured civil settlements this year involving improperly evaded duties on flooring, resins, aluminum, and quartz products.
Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brenna Jenny noted that enhanced coordination with law enforcement and whistleblower contributions will

Little Village Workers Strike as Immigration Enforcement Set to Intensify
CHICAGO, IL — Workers at Mauser Packaging Solutions in Little Village have been on strike for 12 weeks, citing unsafe working conditions and demanding stronger immigration protections. The plant, which cleans and repaints steel chemical containers, employs over 100 workers, mostly Latino immigrants and members of Teamsters Local 705.
Employees describe poor ventilation, exposure to chemicals, and insufficient protective uniforms, forcing some to take contaminated clothing home. Striking workers say conditions inside the plant include extreme heat and constant surveillance. “It’s like a prison,” said José Manuel Ruiz, a maintenance worker who has been with the company since the 1980s.
The strike began in June after the

workers’ contract expired in April. Mauser, based in Oak Brook, offered a “final proposal” of 3.5% raises in the first
year and 3% annually after, which the union rejected. The union seeks 6% in year one and 4% thereafter. It also wants contract language barring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from entering the property without a judicial warrant; Mauser has declined, offering instead more time for employees to resolve documentation issues.
The strike has drawn support from Mayor Brandon Johnson, Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García, and Sen. Bernie Sanders. Non-Latino colleagues have also voiced solidarity.
“This fight is about dignity and security, not just wages,” said union negotiator Nico Coronado. With federal immigration enforcement increasing and workplace protections shifting, Little Village workers say the outcome could set a precedent for other labor and immigrant rights campaigns nationwide.
strengthen enforcement efforts.
The Task Force will also collaborate closely with DHS, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). ICE HSI’s Global Trade Division, with its specialized expertise and legacy customs authorities, will play a key role in strengthening investigations of traderelated crimes.
Because protecting American workers is at the heart of trade policy, the Task Force encourages referrals from domestic industries most affected by unfair practices. Whistleblowers are urged to use the DOJ’s Corporate Whistleblower Program or the False Claims Act to report fraud. The DOJ also encourages importers to audit their practices and self-disclose violations to avoid harsher penalties.
This enhanced Task Force represents a unified government effort to safeguard U.S. economic and national security interests by ensuring fair competition and accountability in international trade.
New COVID-19 Vaccine Access Limited in New Jersey
NEW JERSEY -New Jersey residents seeking the latest COVID-19 vaccines ahead of the fall and winter illness season will face eligibility limits following new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals.
The FDA has authorized updated vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna designed to target the LP.8.1 subvariant of the virus, which is currently spreading in New Jersey. However, the vaccines will not be available to all residents.
Age 65 and older: Eligible to receive the updated vaccines.
Under age 65: Eligible only if they have at least one underlying health condition that increases the risk of severe COVID-19.
For children:
Moderna: Approved for ages 6 months and older with underlying conditions. Pfizer: Approved for ages 5 and older with underlying conditions.
These FDA restrictions differ from New Jersey’s own guidance, which— aligned with the CDC—recommends COVID-19 vaccination for everyone 6 months and older.
“It is especially important for those 65 and older, individuals at high risk of severe COVID-19, or anyone who has never received a COVID-19 vaccine,” the New Jersey Department of Health states. State officials have not yet commented on the new FDA limits.

Immigrant Workforce Fell by 1.2 Million During Trump’s Presidency
WASHINGTON, DC — As Americans mark Labor Day, new data shows a sharp decline in immigrant workers under President Trump’s immigration policies. Census Bureau figures analyzed by Pew Research Center indicate a 1.2 million drop in immigrant workers between January and July, including both legal residents and undocumented workers. ICE enforcement remains focused on “dangerous criminals,” though most detained lack criminal convictions.
The unauthorized population, which Pew estimates peaked at 14 million in 2023, has fallen due to stricter enforcement and reduced protections. Oxford Economics projects net immigration will average about 500,000 annually through 2028. Immigrants remain critical to the U.S. workforce, making up
nearly 20% of all workers and a majority in agriculture, construction, and service sectors.
The decline is straining industries reliant on immigrant labor. Louisiana, Florida, and New York report sharp drops, while national job growth slowed, with payroll gains falling to 35,000 monthly from 123,000 earlier this year. In Texas and California, farmworkers and construction crews are shrinking due to ICE raids, disrupting harvests and building projects.
Health care is also affected, as immigrants constitute 43% of home health aides and many long-term care workers. Experts warn that continued enforcement could deepen labor shortages, leaving critical gaps in sectors that domestic workers alone may not fill.

DHS issues waiver for border wall in Texas
WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has signed a waiver to expedite the construction of approximately five miles of new 30-foottall border wall in Starr and Hidalgo Counties, within the U.S. Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector in Texas. The new sections will be built under an existing contract already in progress, funded through U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Fiscal Year 2019 appropriations. This marks the seventh waiver signed by Secretary Noem for border barrier construction projects along the southern border. Currently, CBP has roughly 100 miles of new border barrier in various stages of construction and planning, financed by prior appropriations. In addition, CBP received $46.5 billion for border barrier system construction under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1), signed by President Trump on July 4, 2025. These funds will support the construction of primary and secondary border walls, waterborne barriers, patrol roads, and integrated technology— including cameras, lights, and sensors. Together, these elements will provide

agents with enhanced intelligence, situational awareness, mobility, and enforcement capability to interdict illegal activity effectively.
Under Section 102 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, the Secretary has authority to waive any legal requirements, including environmental laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act, to ensure swift construction of physical barriers and roads. Projects executed under such waivers are deemed critical to securing the southern border and reinforcing the nation’s commitment to border security.

Heightened Immigration Raids Expected in Chicago Next Week
The Department of Homeland Security declined to confirm or deny the plans but reiterated: “President Trump has been clear: We are going to make our streets and cities safe again.”
CHICAGO, IL-Federal authorities plan to send additional agents to Chicago next week to expand operations aimed at arresting unauthorized immigrants. The plan involves Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Border Patrol, and other federal agencies, the officials said. Chicago, a Democratic-led city, prohibits local police from inquiring about immigration status and does not cooperate with ICE. City leaders argue that such cooperation would erode public trust and harm crime-fighting efforts. The stance has drawn sharp criticism from the Trump administration and “border czar” Tom Homan. President Donald Trump, who often targets Chicago in his remarks, has also suggested deploying the National Guard to the city—a move Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker strongly opposes. “Mr. President, do not come to Chicago,” Pritzker said
this week, adding, “You’re neither wanted here nor needed here.” He accused Trump of “attempting to manufacture a crisis.”
As part of the enforcement plan, the Border Patrol will use a naval base outside Chicago as a staging area, the officials said. It remains unclear how long the operations will last or whether the National Guard will also be deployed.
The Department of Homeland Security declined to confirm or deny the plans but reiterated: “President Trump has been clear: We are going to make our streets and cities safe again.”
Pritzker said Thursday that the Trump administration had not contacted him or other state officials. “They’re just looking to invade the city of Chicago,” he said. “Not coordinate with law enforcement, not coordinate with the state of Illinois, the governor, or the mayor.”
10th Annual Health Seminar Hosted by Peace Center of Los Angeles
ORANGE, CA — The Peace Center of Los Angeles hosted its 10th Annual Health & Wellness Seminar, themed “Healthy Heart & Peaceful Life,” on July 19 at Tandoor Cuisine of India, drawing nearly 100 attendees. The event was dedicated to the memory of longtime supporter Ramesh Ramnani. The program began with a welcome by Chair Ashok Madan, followed by cultural performances, including a Ganesh Stuti dance presented by students of Natyashetra Dance School. Founder Ila Mehta spoke about the organization’s mission and its commitment to promoting community wellness.
Medical experts delivered presentations
on heart health, offering evidence-based insights and practical strategies for prevention and self-care. The seminar also recognized young leaders who are raising awareness about heart health. A fundraising appeal generated over $1,000 in donations, underscoring the community’s support for health initiatives. Official proclamations from Artesia Councilwoman Zeel Ahir and Mayor Ali Sajjad Taj honored key contributors, including Ashok Madan, Dr. Jayesh Shah, Capt. Aparna Hande, and Kewal Kanda, for their service to public health.
The evening concluded with a heartfelt tribute to Ramesh Ramnani, featuring reflections from community leaders and a classical dance performance by Dhoon Academy
The stepped-up operations are part of a broader immigration crackdown Trump has pushed since his presidential campaign, often highlighted by rallies where supporters brandished “mass deportation now” signs.
In June, a similar large-scale operation in Los Angeles sparked protests that escalated into violence and looting, prompting Mayor Karen Bass to impose a downtown curfew. The Trump administration deployed the National Guard there as well, citing the need to protect federal property and personnel.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom denounced that deployment as illegal and “political theater,” while Bass and other local officials called it a politically motivated stunt intended to intimidate residents.
USCIS Launches ACH Debit Payment Option for Filing Fees
WASHIINGTON, DC - U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has introduced a new way to pay filing fees through electronic debit from a U.S. bank account. Effective immediately, applicants and petitioners may authorize payments by submitting Form G-1650, Authorization for ACH Transactions, with their applications, petitions, or requests.
The initiative supports Executive Order 14247, Modernizing Payments to and from America’s Bank Account, and is designed to reduce processing delays, cut administrative costs, and minimize risks associated with fraud, lost payments, and theft.
“We have a responsibility to the American people to operate as efficiently and securely as possible,” said USCIS Spokesman Matthew J. Tragesser. “Over
90% of our payments currently come from checks and money orders, creating delays and risk. America deserves better, and we intend to deliver.”
This ACH debit option complements the existing credit card payment method using Form G-1450, Authorization for Credit Card Transactions. USCIS will continue to accept checks and money orders until October 28, 2025. After that date, only ACH debit (Form G-1650) or credit card (Form G-1450) payments will be accepted. USCIS has updated its Policy Manual to include ACH debit payments as an approved method. Applicants should ensure their accounts have sufficient funds, as applications may be rejected if a payment is denied. Those without a U.S. bank account may use Form G-1450 with a prepaid or regular credit card.

USCIS Resumes In-Person Neighborhood Verification for Citizenship Applicants
WASHNGTON, DC- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has reinstated in-person “neighborhood checks” as part of the naturalization process, ending a 34-year waiver of the practice.
In a policy memo dated August 22, USCIS said officers may now interview neighbors, coworkers, or employers of citizenship applicants to verify eligibility. The practice, last used under President George H.W. Bush, will be applied at the discretion of officers on a case-by-case basis.
Previously, all applicants were exempt from neighborhood investigations. Now, if an applicant presents strong evidence of continuous residence and good moral character, officers may waive the check. However, if questions arise or supporting documents are insufficient, USCIS may conduct a neighborhood inquiry. The agency encourages applicants to submit testimonial letters from neighbors, employers, or community members with their applications. Providing this evidence upfront may help avoid further scrutiny and potential delays. If USCIS requests additional documents and they are not provided,
officers may proceed with direct outreach to an applicant’s community or workplace. USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said the measure strengthens the integrity of the naturalization process, ensuring applicants demonstrate good moral character and adherence to U.S. constitutional principles. Applicants should prepare by gathering testimonial letters early and ensuring records are complete. Employers may also be contacted, though no special documents are required. They should be ready to confirm basic details such as employment dates and roles.
For most applicants, the process remains unchanged. However, the restored policy gives USCIS broader discretion to investigate when eligibility is uncertain, potentially extending wait times.
