"Israel Has It, US Should Too": Behind Trump's 'Golden Dome' Missile Shield
New Delhi: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to build a "Golden Dome" missile defense system, similar to Israel's "Iron Dome," as part of efforts to create "the most powerful military of the future." Addressing Congress, he called for funding a "state-of-the-art missile shield" to protect the U.S. from aerial threats. Trump referenced Ronald Reagan's 1983 Strategic Defense Initiative, which aimed to intercept Russian ICBMs but was ultimately abandoned due to technological and ethical challenges. The proposed shield would integrate multiple defense systems

Trump Pushes for Greenland, Vows to Reclaim Panama Canal
Washington, United States: President Donald Trump urged Greenland to join the United States, vowing to take the Danish-ruled island "one way or the other." Addressing Congress, he reiterated his expansionist vision, also declaring efforts to reclaim the Panama Canal. With Greenland’s elections approaching, Trump called on its people to choose U.S. integration, promising security and prosperity. However, he warned, “One way or the other, we're going to get it.” His remarks come amid rising Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic. Trump also claimed success in countering China’s control over the Panama Canal after a Hong Kong firm sold its ports to a U.S.-led group. He declared, “We’re reclaiming the Panama Canal, and we’ve already started.” He had previously suggested military force to seize both Greenland and the canal. While casting himself as a peacemaker, Trump has suspended aid to Ukraine and clashed with President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. He read a message from Zelensky indicating openness to a deal granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral wealth, stating, “It’s time to end this senseless war.” Trump’s administration has slashed 90% of U.S. development aid, dismissing it as wasteful. He mocked a $8 million LGBTQI+ initiative in Lesotho, an African nation with a high HIV/AIDS rate, joking that “nobody has ever heard of” it—drawing laughter from Republicans.
The US funded roughly half of the annual development costs of the Arrow 2 system that is part of Israel's much-talked about 'Iron Dome' missile defence system.

Zelensky Praises Trump as "Strong Leader" After White House Clash
Kyiv: A day after the United States suspended supplies of military aid to Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday proposed a possible peace plan to end the war with Russia, saying he was willing to work "constructively" under "strong leadership" of US President Donald Trump. In an extraordinary turnaround, Zelensky also indicated he was ready
to sign a deal giving the US access to Ukraine's mineral wealth.
The Ukrainian leader traveled to Washington on Friday to sign the deal, but it was put on hold after a contentious Oval Office meeting between Trump and Zelensky that resulted in the latter's swift departure from the White House.
On Tuesday, Zelensky said he was "ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible", called the Oval Office meeting "regrettable."

Israel's 'Iron Dome': Israel's missile defense includes the 'Iron Dome' for short-range threats, 'David’s Sling' for mid-range missiles, and Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 for longrange ballistic missiles. The U.S. has contributed over $3.7 billion to Israel’s Arrow system since 2020. Trump’s proposal underscores growing concerns over global missile threats and the need for enhanced U.S. defense capabilities.
Trump's Plan: "Drill Baby Drill"
Washington, DC:
US Energy policy took center stage during President Donald Trump's Congress address on Tuesday, with his emphatic "drill baby drill" approach. Referring to his oil and gas plans, the President said America has "more liquid gold under our feet than any nation" which could defeat inflation and dramatically lower costs.
He blamed his predecessor Joe Biden's administration for rising food and fuel prices and said, "a major focus of our fight to defeat inflation is rapidly reducing the cost of energy."
He stressed that under the Biden administration over 100 power plants had closed and said that America was opening up many of those power plants right now.
Donald Trump Announces Arrest Of Kabul Airport Bomber, Thanks Pakistan
Washington: An Islamic State operative allegedly responsible for a deadly 2021 suicide bombing outside Kabul airport during the chaotic US military withdrawal has been arrested, President Donald Trump said Tuesday. The bomber detonated a device among packed crowds as they tried to flee Afghanistan on August 26, 2021. The blast killed some 170 Afghans and 13 US troops securing the perimeter.
In April 2023, the White House announced that an Islamic State official involved in plotting the attack had been killed in an operation by Afghanistan's new Taliban government.

FM takes Trump 51st state line 'very
seriously'
Canada's Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has told the BBC she takes US President Donald Trump's remarks on making Canada the 51st state of his country "very seriously".
"This is not a joke anymore," Joly told Newsnight. "There's a reason why Canadians, when they go out on a hockey game, are booing the American national anthem... We're insulted. We're mad. We're angry." Her comments come after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on products entering the US from Canada on Tuesday. Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called that a "very dumb thing to do" and announced retaliatory tariffs.
However, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Trump would "probably" announce a deal to reduce tariffs on Wednesday. In response, Joly told the BBC that "at the end of the day, the only one that really takes a decision is President Trump".
benefiting billionaires and warning of economic risks.
Letter from Zelensky
Trump read from an "important letter" sent by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, signaling willingness to negotiate peace. This came a day after Trump paused military aid to Ukraine, following a tense meeting with Zelensky in Washington. A minerals deal between the two countries was expected but did not materialize.
US actor Jesse Eisenberg gets Polish citizenship
US actor Jesse Eisenberg has been awarded Polish citizenship by President Andrzej Duda, after telling the story of the Jewish population during World War Two in his Oscar-winning film A Real Pain. Eisenberg wrote, directed and starred in the film, about two American cousins who travel to Poland to honour their grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, who was based on Eisenberg's own great aunt. He told the citizenship ceremony: "While we were filming this movie in Poland, and I was walking the streets and starting to get a little more comfortable in the country, something so obvious occurred to me, which is that my family had lived in this place for far longer than we lived in New York. "And of course, the history ended so tragically." He continued: "In addition to that tragedy of history is also the tragedy that my family didn't feel any connection any more to Poland, and that saddened me and confirmed for me that I really wanted to try to reconnect as much as possible.
Trade War Concerns
Trump downplayed fears over newly imposed tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, saying they were necessary to "make America rich again." However, some Republicans remained seated, indicating divisions within the party.
Biden Blamed for Inflation
Trump criticized the Biden administration for rising egg prices, citing an economic “catastrophe” inherited from his predecessor. Inflation stands at 3%, down from its 2022 peak, but Trump’s economic policies remain under scrutiny.
Honoring a Child’s Dream
In an emotional moment, Trump swore in 13-year-old DJ Daniel, a brain cancer patient, as an honorary Secret Service member, receiving bipartisan applause.
Tribute to Murder Victim
Trump renamed a Texas wildlife refuge after Jocelyn Nungaray, a girl allegedly killed by undocumented immigrants, reinforcing his hardline immigration stance. While illegal border crossings have hit a 25-year low, Trump remains frustrated with the pace of deportations. Trump’s speech underscored his aggressive policy shifts while deepening political divisions in Washington.
NASA's Stuck Astronauts Near Earth After 9
Months
NASA's two stuck astronauts are just a few weeks away from finally returning to Earth after nine months in space. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have to wait until their replacements arrive at the International Space Station next week before they can check out later this month. They'll be joined on their SpaceX ride home by two astronauts who launched by themselves in September alongside two empty seats.
During a news conference Tuesday, Wilmore said that while politics is part of life, it did not play into his and Williams' return, moved up a couple weeks thanks to a change in SpaceX capsules.
President Donald Trump and SpaceX's Elon Musk said at the end of January that they wanted to accelerate the astronauts' return, blaming the previous administration.
“We're just Butch and Suni," Williams said. “Everybody knows who we are by now."

Tesla Leases First Mumbai Showroom
US electric carmaker Tesla has signed a lease deal to open its first showroom in Mumbai, as it moves towards a goal to sell imported cars in India, registration papers show, after it dropped similar plans last year. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The papers show the company has signed a five-year lease from February 16, 2025 and will pay rent of about $446,000 for the first year for a 4,003 square feet (372 square meter) space, almost the size of a basketball court.
NZ to Face India in CT 2025 Final
David Miller's century went in vain as New Zealand beat South Africa by 50 runs to set up Champions Trophy final date with India. Chasing 363, South Africa seemed to be on course in the initial part of their run chase but they stumbled later on, losing wickets in the middle overs, to eventually lose their way despite Miller's face-saving century. Miller reached triple figures off the final ball of the match.

Gujarat a Trafficking Hub: Canada-Linked Illegal US Entry Racket Expands
HiIndia Newsdesk
An investigation into the human trafficking network operating from India has unearthed the involvement of thousands of local agents and at least 150 Canadian colleges that facilitate illegal entry into the US, Enforcement Directorate sources said. Some 4,000 to 4,500 trafficking agents are active in the country, 2,000 of them in Gujarat alone, an ED official told.
The revelation comes amid a drive by the Donald Trump administration to deport illegal Indian immigrants, with pictures showing them in handcuffs and shackles triggering allegations of ill-treatment.
“Investigations have revealed that nearly 2,000 agents or ‘partners’ in Gujarat, involved in smuggling Indians into the US via Canada, are still active and in touch with syndicate members in Canada,” the ED official said.
He said the central agency had identified some of the agents and was carrying out raids to arrest them.
The scam works this way, he said: the Indian agents get their clients admitted to Canadian colleges — many of them located close to the US border — on student visas. Once these migrants reach Canada, they illegally cross the US-Canada border.
“We have come across more than 12,000 (financial) transactions made to several colleges in Canada on behalf of ‘students’ from Gujarat between November 2021 and July 2024,” the ED official said.
The scam works this way, he said: the Indian agents get their clients admitted to Canadian colleges — many of them located close to the US border — on student visas. Once these migrants reach Canada, they illegally cross the USCanada border
“These payments to the Canadian colleges were made through three or four (Indian) financial service companies, which too are under our scanner.”
He added: “The ‘fee’ received by the Canada-based colleges was remitted back to the individuals’ account after (the racketeers had) pocketed a commission.”
This commission ranged between Rs.55 lakh and Rs.60 lakh per head, the official said.
The central agency has filed a moneylaundering case in connection with the trafficking racket.
The official said that illegal immigrants found the “student-visa
route” more hassle-free than the arduous “donkey route” — which refers not to a specific route but to a circuitous, often perilous, multicountry journey to the US.
The ED’s probe is linked to the death of four members of a family — including two children — from Dingucha village in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, who froze to death while trying to cross the US-Canada border in January 2022.
Jagdish Patel, 39, wife Vaishaliben, in her mid-30s, and their daughter Vihangi, 11, and son Dharmik, 3, were found dead near Emerson town in Canada’s Manitoba province.
The family, part of an 11-member
group of undocumented migrants from India, is believed to have paid money to secure illegal entry into the US. The ED had last December raided eight locations in Mumbai, Nagpur, Gandhinagar and Vadodara in connection with the human trafficking racket. The investigation revealed that three entities — based in Mumbai, Nagpur and Vadodara — had entered into a pact with some foreign universities for the admission of Indians against a commission, the ED official said.
More than 150 Canadian colleges were found to have entered into such an agreement with one of the Maharashtra-based entities, and 112 Canadian colleges with the other, he said.Sources said that illegal immigration from India to the US via Canada had surged, with over 14,000 Indian migrants arrested at the border in the past year. According to US estimates, over 725,000 undocumented Indians live in America.
Trump has made the mass deportation of illegal immigrants a key policy, with the US said to have identified about 18,000 Indians it believes to have entered thecountry illegally.
During his US visit last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India would take back its citizens living illegally in the US. He also underscored the importance of dismantling the “ecosystem” of human trafficking.
Between 2009 and 2024, about 16,000 Indians were deported from the US, according to India’s externalaffairs ministry.
31-Year-Old Gujarat Man Arrested for Using Fake Identity After US Deportation
A 31-year-old man from Gujarat recently deported from the US has been arrested in Ahmedabad for allegedly travelling under a fake identity by using an Indian passport issued in someone else’s name, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, Jignesh Patel, native of Kalol in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar district, was deported from the US via Panama. He reached Ahmedabad via New Delhi on Sunday evening.
He had allegedly travelled to Canada from Delhi by using a passport issued in the name of Wasim Khalil, according to an FIR lodged against him at the airport police station in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Patel was arrested on Sunday, Ahmedabad’s special
operations group inspector N.D. Nakum said, adding it was being ascertained whether the passport on which he travelled was fake or issued in Khalil’s name.
The matter came to light during Patel’s arrival immigration clearance at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi after being deported from the US, the FIR stated. When his travel documents were scrutinised, it was found that he had obtained an emergency certificate in Panama after informing the authorities that his Indian passport was lost. However, nothing was found against the lost passport when Patel’s departure details were checked in the system, the FIR said.
Questioned about the passport on which he had left from India, Patel confessed he had used one issued in Khalil’s name, it said.
A further probe revealed that he had left Delhi for Canada on February 3, 2025, by an Air Canada flight. He was found posing as a different person during departure and was handed over to the police, the FIR said.
Patel had tried to illegally enter America when he was nabbed, Nakum said. He has been booked for cheating by personation and under provisions of the Passport Act.

Bubble Tea Giant Surpasses Starbucks, Shares Soar on Market Debut
HiIndia Newsdesk
Mixue Ice Cream and Tea may be unfamiliar to many of us but the Chinese firm has more outlets than McDonald's and Starbucks. On Monday, the bubble tea chain's shares jumped by more than 40% in their Hong Kong Stock Exchange debut. The company raised $444m (£352m) in the financial hub's biggest initial public offering (IPO) of the year. Mixue's popularity comes as many people in China are grappling with the country's economic challenges - including a property crisis, and weak consumer and business confidence. It sells ice creams and drinks for an average of six Chinese yuan ($0.82; £0.65). The company was founded in 1997 by Zhang Hongchao, a student at Henan University of Finance and Economics, as a part
time job to help his family's finances. Its full name Mìxuě Bīngchéng means "honey snow ice city", with its stores adorned with its Snow King mascot and playing the firm's official theme tune on a loop. According to Mixue, it has more than 45,000 stores across China and 11 other countries,
including Singapore and Thailand.
The firm has also said it plans to continue expanding.
That compares to "over 43,000 locations" for McDonald's and Starbucks' 40,576 outlets.

Trudeau Warns US of Soaring Inflation as Trump’s Tariffs Begin
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday said that Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada would hurt “first and foremost” America and Americans.
“Mr. Trudeau said that Canada had done everything it had promised to secure its border, and that Mr. Trump’s decision to impose the tariffs demonstrated that he had other goals in mind, like annexing Canada,” The New York Times reported as the tariffs kicked in. “He said that he would meet this afternoon with other Canadian officials to discuss the country’s response, including levying tariffs on U.S. exports and potentially canceling contracts for US businesses.”
In a televised address, Trudeau said:

Hong Kong billionaire to sell Panama Canal ports to US firm
A Hong Kong-based company has agreed to sell most of its stake in two key ports on the Panama Canal to a group led by US investment firm BlackRock. The sale comes after weeks of complaining by President Donald Trump that the canal is under Chinese control and that the US should take control of the major shipping route. Through a subsidiary, CK Hutchison Holding operates ports at the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean entrances to the canal. It said Tuesday that it would sell its interests as part of a deal worth $22.8bn (£17.8bn).
China eyes 5% growth target as it reels from Trump tariffs
China has set an economic growth target for this year of "around 5%" and pledged to pump billions of dollars into its ailing economy, which is now facing a trade war with the US.
China's leaders unveiled the plan as thousands of delegates attend the National People's Congress (NPC), a rubber-stamp parliament, which passes decisions already made behind closed doors.
But the week-long gathering is watched closely for clues on Beijing's policy changes - and this year is more significant than most.
President Xi Jinping had already been battling persistently low consumption, a property crisis
and unemployment, before Donald Trump's new 10% levy on Chinese imports came into effect on Tuesday. This follows the 10% tariff imposed in early February, taking the total US levy to 20%. And it hits what has been a rare bright spot for the Chinese economy: exports. Beijing hit back almost immediately on Tuesday, just as it did last month. It announced retaliatory action that included 10%-15% tariffs on certain agriculture imports from the US. This is key because China is the biggest market for these goods, such as American corn, wheat and soybeans.

Champions Trophy: Kohli Leads India Past Australia to Final
With a towering six from K L Rahul, India overcame their toughest ICC tournament hurdle—Australia—to storm into the Champions Trophy final. The four-wicket victory, with 11 balls to spare, didn’t fully reflect India’s dominance in outclassing the World Champions. Adding to Pakistan’s misery, the hosts first crashed out humiliatingly, and now Dubai will host an India-led title clash.
The star of the semi-final was Virat Kohli, who orchestrated a masterful 84-run chase, surpassing 8,000 runs
Kohli Breaks
Tendulkar's Record, Hits Milestone vs Australia
Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli shattered Sachin Tendulkar's record during the Champions Trophy 2025 encounter against Australia in Dubai on Tuesday. Kohli looked comfortable against the Australia bowlers and was able to score a gritty half-century. Thanks to this knock, he has the most 50-plus scores in ICC ODI tournaments (24) as he went past Sachin's record of 23. India captain Rohit Sharma is currently third with 18 while Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara has 17.
in successful ODI chases. However, India’s triumph was a collective effort, with every player executing their role to perfection, making their
contributions just as crucial as Kohli’s.
Kohli’s command of ODI chases now seems effortless, as he batted with clinical precision, consuming 98 balls and hitting five fours. Reflecting on his innings, he said, “My timing, my composure at the crease—I wasn’t rushed. The singles I took were the most pleasing part for me.”
With this statement victory, India now eyes the ultimate prize in Sunday’s final, carrying the momentum of a team that has mastered the art of winning under pressure.
Emma Navarro Dominates Arango 6-0, 6-0 to Win WTA Merida Open
Top-seeded American Emma Navarro capped a dominant week with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of qualifier Emiliana Arango in the final of the WTA Merida Open on Sunday. Navarro, seeded No. 1 for the first time, marched to her second WTA title without dropping a set, adding the 500-level crown to the title she won in
Hobart last year. Navarro hadn't reached a final since, although she made it to the quarter-finals or better at the last three Grand Slams and came into the week ranked 10th in the world. She needed just 55 minutes to subdue Arango, becoming the first player to win a WTA final 6-0, 6-0 since Iga Swiatek blanked Karolina Pliskova in the 2021 Rome title match.
New Zealand Pin Big Hopes Ahead of Semi-Final vs South Africa
After the New Zealand batters collapsed against a potent Indian spin attack in their previous match, skipper Mitchell Santner has acknowledged the difficulties his side faced in the clash. But he still believes the conditions at the Gaddafi Stadium for their clash with South Africa will not assist spinners as the slower track in Dubai did. The second semifinal of the 2025 Champions Trophy will be an interesting clash, with both teams eyeing their first victory in a limitedovers ICC tournament. The Proteas enter the game with two wins and one no result, whereas New Zealand finished as the runner-up in Group
A with convincing victories against Pakistan and Bangladesh. With quality spinners like Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi awaiting the Kiwi batters, Santner addressed the challenge that awaits his side.
Padmakar Shivalkar, one of the finest left-arm spinners the country has produced, passed away in Mumbai on Monday. He was 84 and was unwell for the past few months.

Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday named Ajinkya Rahane as the team’s captain for the forthcoming IPL 2025 season. All-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was named as the defending champions’ vicecaptain as IPL season is slated to begin on March 22.
“I think like our squad, they've got all aspects covered. They've obviously been going in with four seamers recently, and I think Lahore will probably be more accustomed to that kind of setup, probably not spinning as much as definitely Dubai. “So, I think they're obviously pretty well balanced. I don't think we'll potentially get as much spin as there was in Dubai. So, I think that's better for our batters if it doesn't spin that much,” said Santner in the pre-game press conference.
The 36-year-old Rahane marked a reunion with KKR after having previously featured for the side in the 2022 season. Six Items That May Become More Expensive for Americans Under Trump’s Tariffs
US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico, sparking concerns of a trade war. Goods entering the US from these countries now face a 25% tariff, while Canada and Mexico have announced retaliatory measures. Given the deeply integrated supply chains, economists warn these tariffs could lead to higher prices for American consumers.
What Could Get More
Expensive?
Cars
Car prices may rise by about $3,000
"If
due to tariffs on auto parts that frequently cross North American borders. Major brands like Ford, General Motors, and Honda rely on these supply chains, making cost increases likely.
Beer, Whisky, and Tequila
Popular Mexican beers like Modelo and Corona could see price hikes if importers pass on tariff costs. Spirits such as Bourbon, Tennessee whiskey, and Canadian whisky, which are legally tied to their countries of origin, may also become more expensive due
to supply disruptions.
Houses
The US imports a third of its softwood lumber from Canada, a key building material for homes. The National Association of Home Builders warns tariffs could increase home prices and reduce new developments. Trump has also ordered an investigation into additional tariffs on global lumber imports.

the U.S. Wants War, So Be It": China's Strong Response to Trump's Tariff Accusation
New Delhi:
In a sharp retort to US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs charge, the Chinese embassy in the US said Beijing is ready to "fight till the end" in any type of war the US wants. "If war is what the US wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war or any other type of war, we're ready to fight till the end," the Chinese embassy's official handle posted on X after Trump's explosive remarks in a joint session at Congress.
Trump said other countries have used tariffs against the US for decades. " Now it's our turn to start using them against those other countries. On average, the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico and Canada. Have you heard of them? And countless other nations charge us tremendously higher tariffs than we charge them. It's very unfair. India charges us auto tariffs higher than 100%. China's average tariff on our products is twice what we charge them. And South Korea's average tariff is four times higher," he said.
Donald Trump made strong remarks on reciprocal tariffs during an address to the joint session of Congress
other highly potent opioids into the US.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has contested this. "The fentanyl issue is a flimsy excuse to raise US tariffs on Chinese imports. The US, not anyone else, is responsible for the #FentanylCrisis inside the US. In the spirit of humanity and goodwill towards the American people, we have taken robust steps to assist the US in dealing with the issue. Instead of recognizing our efforts, the US has sought to smear and shift blame to China, and is seeking to pressure and blackmail China with tariff hikes," it said in a statement.
"This is happening by friend and foe. This system is not fair to the United States and never was... That's reciprocal back and forth. Whatever they tax us, we will tax them," he said.
Trump has increased previously imposed 10 per cent levies on Chinese goods to 20 per cent. China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against the US. "The United States' unilateral tax measures seriously violate WTO rules and undermine the foundation of China-US economic and trade cooperation," Beijing's commerce ministry said in a statement. While imposing the tariffs, Trump accused China of not doing enough to halt the trafficking of fentanyl and
"They've been PUNISHING us for helping them. This is not going to solve
the US's problem and will undermine our counternarcotics dialogue and cooperation. Intimidation does not scare us. Bullying does not work on us. Pressuring, coercion or threats are not the right way of dealing with China. Anyone using maximum pressure on China is picking the wrong guy and miscalculating. If the US truly wants to solve the fentanyl issue, then the right thing to do is to consult with China by treating each other as equals," it added.
Tariffs could lead to price increases for US households that rely on this staple.
Fuel Prices
Canada supplies 61% of US crude oil imports. While energy tariffs are set at 10%, reduced Canadian exports in retaliation could lead to higher fuel costs.
Avocados
Mexico provides nearly 90% of US avocados. The US Agriculture Department warns tariffs could significantly raise prices for avocados and guacamole.
Arab Leaders Approve $53B Alternative to Trump’s Gaza Plan
A $53bn (£41.4 billion) reconstruction plan to rival President Donald Trump's idea for the US to "take over Gaza" and move out more than two million Palestinians has been approved by Arab leaders at an emergency summit in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
"The Egypt plan is now an Arab plan," announced the secretary general of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit at the end of this hours-long gathering. Without referring specifically to President Trump's ideas, he underlined that "the Arab stance is to reject any displacement, whether it is voluntary or forced".
Egypt had produced a detailed blueprint, with a 91-page glossy document including images of leafy neighbourhoods and grand public buildings, to counter a US scheme labelled as a "Middle East Riviera" which shocked the Arab world and beyond.
What sets this new plan apart is it is not just about property development; its banners are politics and the rights of Palestinians.

Reciprocal Tariff On India : Trump Announcement In Congress Speech
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has reiterated his criticism of India’s "very unfair" tariffs and announced that reciprocal tariffs will take effect from April 2. He aims to impose the same tariff rates on imports from other nations as they impose on US exports.
Speaking to a Joint Session of Congress in his second term, Trump stated, "Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades. Now it’s our turn." He singled out India, China, Brazil, and the European Union for imposing significantly higher tariffs on American goods.
Citing India, he said, "India charges us auto tariffs higher than 100 per cent."
Calls India’s Tariffs ‘Very Unfair’
He stressed that the US must counter such inequitable trade policies and confirmed that India would not be exempt.
Trump referenced his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, where he made it clear that India would face new tariff measures. "Nobody can argue with me on this," he added.
The move signals a tougher US stance on trade, reinforcing Trump's longstanding demand for fairer trade agreements and tariffs aligned with those imposed on American products.
'Indians Are Bad': US Man Attacks IndianOrigin Nurse, Charged With Hate Crime
A brutal attack at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital has left 67-year-old nurse Leelamma Lal severely injured and 33-year-old Stephen Scantlebury facing attempted second-degree murder charges with a hate crime enhancement. Authorities say Scantlebury, a psychiatric patient, assaulted Lal last Tuesday, causing multiple facial fractures, a broken collarbone, and brain bleeding. The attack, captured on hospital surveillance, lasted nearly two minutes. Lal’s daughter, Cindy Joseph, described the injuries: “She had subdural

According to an affidavit, Scantlebury made racist remarks after the attack, saying, “Indians are bad” and bragging about beating an “Indian doctor.”

Trudeau Imposes 25% Tariffs, Calls Trump’s Trade War “Dumb”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed to retaliate against U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports, calling it a "trade war" that will harm American families. While stressing that Canadians are "reasonable and polite," he made it clear they will not back down when their economy is at stake.
Speaking from Parliament Hill on Tuesday, Trudeau slammed U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff decision as a "very dumb thing to do." He questioned why Trump was engaging with Vladimir Putin, whom he called a "murderer and dictator," while imposing tariffs on Canada, a longtime ally. "The United States has launched a trade war

against its closest partner and friend," Trudeau stated. In response, Canada will impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods. The first $30 billion will take effect immediately, with the remaining $125 billion following in 21 days. Additionally, Trudeau announced plans to challenge the U.S. tariffs at the World Trade Organization, arguing they violate the free trade agreement between the two nations. Canada’s countermeasures signal a sharp escalation in trade tensions, as Trudeau insists his government will defend Canadian businesses and workers against what he views as unjust U.S. policies.
testified about his statements. Scantlebury’s wife claimed he had been paranoid before the incident, believing he was under surveillance. However, a judge denied transferring him to a mental health facility, calling it "premature." The attack has raised concerns over healthcare worker safety. A petition demanding stricter security and tougher penalties has gathered over 10,000 signatures in three days. Dr. Cheryl Thomas-Harcum, one of the petition’s organizers, condemned the attack: “Leela devoted her life to this profession, and at the tail end of her career, she endured something so vicious.”
Trump’s Tariffs May Push Mexico, Canada into Recession
US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Mexico could severely impact the economies of both countries, potentially slowing down production of certain goods, raising prices on products and sparking fears of a recession, analysts warn. The US on Tuesday imposed 25% tariffs on imports from both of its neighbors, as well as a 10% tax on Canadian energy. Though both countries have also warned they will impose reciprocal tariffs that will affect the US economy, Canada and Mexico stand to lose far more because they depend so heavily on America for trade. The US is considered their largest export market.

Dr Mehta has recently been named one of the Castle Connolly Top Doctors. This year, he joins an elite group of just four doctors recognized in this prestigious list.
Dr. Nilesh D. Mehta, a respected oncologist at City of Hope Cancer Center in Phoenix, has dedicated his life providing compassionate care to cancer patients. Recently honored with a prestigious award recognizing his outstanding contributions, Dr. Mehta reflects on his career, personal philosophy, his commitment to a patients and his unrelenting passion for sports such as Cricket.
Recognition Among the Best: Castle Connolly Top Doctors
Dr. Mehta is no stranger to accolades, having been named one of the Castle Connolly Top Doctors multiple times. Castle Connolly’s recognition is highly coveted in the medical community. Physicians are selected based on peer nominations, research, and assessments of their professional achievements, including their ability to offer outstanding care to their patients. “It’s an honor to be recognized alongside such esteemed colleagues,” says Dr. Mehta. “But it’s the relationships I’ve built with my patients over the years that truly drive me. This recognition simply validates the hard work and dedication I’ve poured into my practice.”
A Compassionate Approach to Cancer Care
"My goal is to provide the best possible quality of life for my patients while dealing with their cancer and treatment," Dr. Mehta explains with warmth and humility. His approach is deeply rooted in understanding the emotional, psychological, and physical toll that a cancer diagnosis takes on individuals. For Dr. Mehta, it’s not just about treating a disease—it's about treating the whole person.
He continues, "A cancer diagnosis affects every element of a person’s life, which can make it difficult to stay focused on what is important. I try to inspire my patients to take life one day at a time. I am here to support them by providing compassionate care customized to their specific needs and truly getting to know them."
Dr. Mehta’s patients often speak of his exceptional ability to ease anxiety, and his commitment to guiding them through the often overwhelming journey of cancer treatment. In a world where medical care can sometimes feel impersonal, Dr. Mehta stands out for his individualized, one-on-one approach to care.
The Heart of Treatment: A Personalized Approach
While many oncologists treat cancer as the focus of their patient’s care, Dr. Mehta believes in addressing the person as a whole. His treatment philosophy revolves around offering customized treatment plans for patients battling various cancer types and blood disorders. "I offer personalized treatment plans for patients facing
Zofeen Maqsood
a variety of cancer types and blood disorders. My main objective is to use my knowledge about the disease to educate and guide my patients through all of their options, eventually guiding them in a direction that meets their individualized needs and goals," he shares.
A Lifelong Commitment to Learning and Teaching
Dr. Mehta’s professional journey began at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda, India, where he earned his medical degree. His post-graduate training, including a residency at Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital and a fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at the University of Chicago, laid the foundation for his illustrious career.
But Dr. Mehta's commitment to the medical field extends beyond patient care. As a Professor of Medicine at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, Illinois, he also mentors the next generation of medical professionals. His involvement in clinical trials and his published articles in leading journals are testament to his continuous pursuit of knowledge and his dedication to advancing the field of oncology.
A Childhood in Baroda and the Influence of His Father
Dr. Mehta’s earliest memories trace back to Baroda in India, where he grew up with his father, Mr. D.D. Mehta, a banker and a passionate cricket enthusiast. His father, who played at the local level, introduced him to the sport early on. Dr. Mehta’s childhood was filled with visits to cricket matches and tournaments, where he rubbed shoulders with cricket legends like Vijay Hazare and Duttajirao Gaekwad.
"I’ve always had a passion for cricket. Growing up, my father took me to matches and I had the privilege of meeting some of the game’s greats. But as much as I loved the sport, I realized that I wasn’t cut out for the competitive side of things. I started thinking about becoming a cricket commentator instead,” he recalls. However, his father recognized his academic potential. "My dad insisted that I first focus on my academics, and so I set my sights on medicine," says Dr. Mehta. He completed his medical degree at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda, following which he moved to the United States in the early 1980s after marrying his wife, Smita, an exceptional woman with an infectious charm who was living in the U.S.
Life in the U.S. and the Emotional Weight of Being an Oncologist
Dr. Mehta and his wife made Chicago their home and lived in Lake County for over four decades before moving to sunny Arizona! During this time, Dr. Mehta became a beloved figure in the oncology community, touching countless lives. But being an oncologist has its emotional
challenges.
"Being an oncologist, you don’t have the privilege of telling your patient, ‘It’s just a sore throat, take medicine for a week, and you’ll be fine,’" Dr. Mehta explains. "When you diagnose someone with cancer, you realize you become their doctor, their guide, their mentor. They look to you for direction, and you join them on this difficult journey."
Dr. Mehta acknowledges the emotional toll his profession can take but shares that it’s moments like these that shape his path. One such moment stands out in his memory: "I had a patient who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He only had a few weeks to live, and when I asked him what his last wish was, he said he wanted to meet Brian Urlacher, the Chicago Bears player."
As it turned out, Urlacher was Dr. Mehta’s neighbor, and without hesitation, the football star agreed to meet the patient. "I took him through the hospital’s back entry to maintain privacy, and when the patient met Urlacher, his face lit up. It was priceless," Dr. Mehta remembers. "The patient passed away a week later, but what made it bearable was the letter I received from his family. They wrote to thank me for giving him that moment, saying it meant the world to them that he passed peacefully after living a dream."
A Passion for Cricket and Carrom:
Dr. Mehta’s
Life Beyond Medicine
Away from the hospital, Dr. Mehta is also known for his love of cricket, a passion he shares with readers as a contributing reporter for Hi India newspaper. Having covered several ICC Cricket World Cup events, he enjoys writing about the sport with the same enthusiasm and dedication he brings to his medical practice.
In 2013, Dr. Mehta added a unique achievement to his list when he became the U.S. Doubles Champion in Carrom, a table-top game that originated in India. His ability to excel in a sport requiring strategy and focus is a testament to his diverse interests and commitment to excellence in everything he does.
A Legacy of Impact
As he continues to inspire, educate, and care for those who need him most, Dr. Mehta remains a dedicated family man who credits his wife Smita for being the ground beneath his feet. Ms Smita Mehta, a vibrant and positive personality fondly recalls how in the early 80's she traveled to India to find a suitable partner and ended up being introduced through extended family to Dr Nilesh Mehta. She says, "After speaking to him for 15 minutes, I was sure I would marry him. Today we have been together through this incredible journey for forty years and have two kids and four grandkids." The couple exude a simple message that defies their lively personalities -- Do not underestimate yourself, work hard and success will follow.
Warren Buffett Criticizes Trump Tariffs as "Act of War"
As US President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico, billionaire investor Warren Buffett called the move an “act of war.” "Tariffs are actually... an act of war, to some degree," Buffett told CBS on Sunday. The 94-yearold investor warned that tariffs act as a tax on goods, increasing prices for consumers. Buffett noted that his company, Berkshire Hathaway, has paid over $101 billion in US taxes under his leadership. “The Tooth Fairy doesn’t pay ‘em!” he quipped. However, he refused to comment on the current state of the US economy.
Mexico Prepares Next Move
China, Canada Hit Back at Trump Tariffs
Trump's announcement sparked renewed fears of a North American trade war that already showed signs of pushing up inflation and hindering growth.
As US President Donald Trump's tariff hikes on Mexico, Canada, and China take effect Tuesday, Ottawa and Beijing have announced countermeasures.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed to impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of US goods, starting with $30 billion after midnight. He criticized the tariffs, warning they could increase prices for Americans and violate existing trade agreements.
China swiftly retaliated, announcing 10-15% tariff hikes on US agricultural and food products, including chicken, wheat, corn, soybeans, pork, beef, and dairy. The finance ministry also placed 25 American firms under export and investment restrictions.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government is prepared to respond but will wait for Trump’s final announcement before detailing its next move. Mexico previously avoided tariffs by increasing border security and antidrug efforts but hinted at potential trade measures targeting Chinese imports. Trump defended his decision, implementing 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada and raising Chinese import duties from 10% to 20%.

Markets Drop as Trump Announces Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, China
President Donald Trump has said he is moving forward with 25% tariffs on goods imported from Canada and Mexico into the US, adding that time had run out to reach a deal.
US stock markets sank in response to the measures, which he has threatened since earlier this year and said would now go into effect on Tuesday.
An additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports is also expected to come into force, leaving all three of America's top three trade partners facing significantly higher trade barriers than just a few weeks ago.
"No room left for Mexico or for Canada," Trump said at the White House on Monday. "The tariffs, you know, they're all set. They go into effect tomorrow."
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly told reporters later on Monday: "Let's be clear, if Trump is imposing tariffs, we're ready."
She said Ottawa planned to impose retaliatory tariffs against US imports of $155bn (£122bn), with the first tranche of $30bn ready immediately to be levied on everyday goods like pasta, clothing and perfume.

The event, held amid Southern California’s wildfire aftermath, opened with Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo delivering a tribute to Los Angeles. A major surprise of the night was the underperformance of Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez. Despite leading with 13 nominations, it won only two Oscars. The film’s campaign suffered after controversial past social media posts by lead actor Karla Sofía Gascón resurfaced. Though she avoided most of the awards circuit, Gascón was present at the ceremony.
Key Highlights from the 97th Oscars:

Amitabh Bachchan Admits Struggles with Lines, Seeks Retakes
Amitabh Bachchan often reflects on fame and how it may fade, but his fans prove otherwise, gathering outside his residence, Jalsa, every Sunday. Despite his enduring popularity, the 82-year-old actor recently admitted in a blog post that working on film sets has become more challenging with age. He acknowledged making mistakes, struggling with memorizing lines, and often requesting retakes to improve his performance.
Bachchan, regarded as Hindi cinema’s most successful actor, remains deeply committed to his craft. He shared that work discussions now feel like a test, with constant deliberations on what projects to accept or decline. However, he admitted being unaware of the larger film industry dynamics, such as production, costs, marketing, and exhibition.
“As you age, it’s not just about memorizing lines but also dealing with multiple age-related challenges to deliver what’s required,” he wrote. World Reacts to Trump-Zelenskyy Fallout
Washington: A meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky turned into a heated argument, leading to Ukraine’s delegation being asked to leave without attending the formal lunch.
The meeting, their first since Trump’s return to power, began amicably but escalated when US Vice President JD Vance emphasized diplomacy to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war.

The exchange grew tense when Vance accused Ukraine of forcing conscripts to the frontlines and demanded gratitude for US support. Zelensky insisted on Ukraine’s struggles, warning that the war’s impact could extend beyond its borders. Trump then raised his voice, telling Zelensky he was in no position to dictate terms, accusing him of

Speaking at an event organised by Business Standard, Mr Kant said it had become "fashionable" to talk about not working hard. "I strongly believe in hard work. Indians must work hard, whether it's 80 hours or 90 hours a week. If your ambition is to move from a $4 trillion to a $30 trillion economy, you can't do it through entertainment he quoted.

NEWS IN BRIEF
PM Modi Urges 10% Cut in Oil Use for a Healthier Nation
Obesity has emerged as a growing health concern, with alarming statistics indicating a sharp rise in cases over the years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently brought this issue into focus, urging people to cut down on edible oil consumption by 10% as a simple yet effective step toward better health.
In his Mann Ki Baat broadcast on February 23, he said, “During the opening of the National Games in Dehradun, I raised a very important topic, which has started a new discussion in the country – this topic is ‘obesity’. To become a fit and healthy nation, we will certainly have to deal with the problem of obesity.” He also emphasised that obesity is not just a personal challenge but a national concern that requires collective action.
To take this initiative forward, PM Modi nominated 10 prominent personalities on February 24, including industrialists, sportspersons, politicians, and artists, encouraging them to spread awareness and inspire others to make similar changes. He wrote on X: “As mentioned in yesterday’s #MannKiBaat, I would like to nominate the following people to help strengthen the fight against obesity and spread awareness on reducing edible oil consumption in food. I also request them to nominate 10 people each so that our movement gets bigger!” These nominees include industrialists Anand Mahindra and Nandan Nilekani, sportspersons Manu Bhaker and Mirabai Chanu, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, MP Mohanlal and Sudha Murthy, BJP leader Dinesh Lal Yadav, actor R Madhavan and singer Shreya Ghosal. As this discussion gains momentum, it raises important questions about how dietary habits contribute to obesity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to cut down on edible oil consumption by 10%
and what broader steps can be taken to tackle this growing crisis. What happens when you consume excessive edible oil?
Dr Pranav Honnavara Srinivasan, consultant surgical gastroenterologist at Fortis Hospitals, tells indianexpress. com, “Oils are highly calorie-dense,
Healthy strategies for reducing oil intake
To reduce oil intake without compromising nutrition and taste, Malhotra suggests considering healthier cooking methods like steaming, air-frying, grilling, or baking. “For Indian cooking, opt for less expensive yet nutritious oils such as sunflower, groundnut, or mustard oil. These oils provide essential fatty acids and can be used moderately to maintain flavour and nutritional value.”
meaning even small quantities can contribute significantly to overall calorie intake. When combined with other factors like a sedentary lifestyle, excessive consumption of processed foods, and high intake of refined carbohydrates, the risk of obesity increases substantially.”
Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator adds, “Oil consumption can contribute to obesity by increasing overall energy intake, particularly if it is not balanced with other dietary components. However, its impact is often overshadowed by other factors, such as excessive intake of ultra-processed foods and refined carbohydrates, which are more strongly linked to obesity. Lifestyle factors like physical activity and overall dietary balance also significantly influence obesity risk.”
Answered: What ‘deep, quality sleep’ really means
Healthcare experts often underline the importance of deep, quality sleep for health, fitness, and recovery. But have you ever thought what exactly it means? Lifestyle coach Luke Coutinho recently reiterated the same, adding that deep sleep is medicine. “How many of you slept deeply last night and woke up feeling fresh and ready for the day? How many of you have realised that deep sleep makes your health/condition, skin, hair, and hormones better?” he asked on Instagram.
To understand the exact definition, we spoke to experts. Waking up feeling tired, unrefreshed, having difficulty in focusing and learning, or carrying out everyday activities, and daytime sleepiness are signs of insufficient deep sleep, said Dr Aarti Ullal, physician and diabetologist, Gleneagles Hospital Parel.
Concurring, Dr Srinivasan adds that practicing portion control by measuring oil carefully and limiting oil-based dressings and sauces can prevent excess calorie intake.
Instead of relying on oils for healthy fats, incorporating avocados, nuts, and seeds into meals provides essential nutrients without unnecessary calories.
“Additionally, paying close attention to food labels and monitoring the fat content of packaged foods can help make informed choices and reduce hidden sources of unhealthy fats in the diet,” he states.
Combatting childhood obesity
To combat rising childhood obesity, parents should promote a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting saturated fats and sugars.
“Encouraging regular physical activity, such as at least 60 minutes daily, and reducing screen time to less than two hours is also crucial,” notes Malhotra.
“Beyond diet, lifestyle adjustments are equally important — encouraging regular physical activity, reducing screen time, and promoting outdoor play can help prevent weight gain and improve overall well-being. Ensuring children get sufficient sleep through consistent bedtime routines further supports healthy metabolism and weight management,” concludes Dr Srinivasan.
Adding that sleep is vital for supporting various bodily functions, she said: “When you are in deep slumber, your body tends to repair cells as the muscles start to rebuild and tissues heal. This can be beneficial for a speedy recovery, especially after strenuous physical activities.”
Dr Ullal shared that a good night’s sleep not only strengthens the immune system, but it also boosts memory. “This is why it becomes crucial to get a good night’s sleep. Deep sleep can do wonders for your body. It can help you relax and calm down after a stressful and hectic day. While you sleep, stress hormones like cortisol tend to drop, helping relieve stress. Good sleep can help you boost mood levels, manage stress, reduce risk of various health problems, and improve focus,” explained Dr Ullal. She stressed that one should aim for at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep every day, however added that “sleep needs can vary from person to person, and it also varies depending on your age.”
The idea, she said, should be to focus on quality of sleep not only the quantity. “However, just like how deep sleep is beneficial, sleeping for a longer duration can be harmful to your body. One may feel extremely tired when you try to sleep more than your usual time. For a good sleep, try to avoid drinking caffeinated drinks or using digital screens before bedtime,” said Dr Ullal.

Important Medicare Enrollment Deadlines
The two important Medicare enrollment periods will end on March 31, 2025. Additionally, be sure not to miss the application open period for home energy assistance.
Q1: I realized that I missed my Initial Enrollment Period. When can I enroll in Medicare?
If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare and do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you can still sign up during the General Enrollment Period (GEP). The General Enrollment Period occurs annually from January 1 to March 31.
If you enroll during this time, your Medicare coverage will begin on the first day of the following month. Example: If you sign up in March, your coverage will start in April. However, late enrollment penalties may apply, potentially increasing the cost of your monthly premiums.
Q2: I am currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, but I found a better plan that fits my medical needs after the deadline of the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period. Should I wait for the next open enrollment period to switch to the better plan?
If you find a better Medicare Advantage plan after the Annual
Medicare Open Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7), you may not have to wait until the next open enrollment period. You can switch plans during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP), which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year.
• During this period, if you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can:
• Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage).
• Return to Original Medicare (and, if needed, enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan).
• Important: You can only make one plan change during this period, so choose carefully.
Q3: I am finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with my energy bills. Are there any programs or assistance options available to help manage these expenses?
Yes, you may qualify for assistance through LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), a federally funded program that helps low-income households manage home energy costs.
• LIHEAP provides annual cash grants to help cover heating and cooling expenses.
• The grants are paid directly to you or your energy company.
• To qualify, your household income must not exceed 150% of the federal poverty guideline (e.g., $2,555/month for a two-person household).
• Assets are generally not a factor, but some states may have additional eligibility requirements.
Application Period:
Enrollment periods vary by state, but typically run from November through April.

Unity in Devotion: Religious Leaders Hold Candlelight Vigil for Pope Francis in Nevada
Interfaith Prayers for Pope Francis: Blessings and Well-Wishes from Diverse Spiritual Traditions in English, Spanish, Arabic, Sanskrit, Pali, Persian, Hebrew, and Paiute.
RENO, NV- In a remarkable interfaith gesture, religious leaders from diverse traditions gathered in Reno, Nevada, for a candlelight vigil, offering prayers for the swift recovery of Pope Francis, who is hospitalized in Rome.
Organized by Hindu statesman Rajan Zed and hosted by Unity Minister Toni King, the event featured prayers in multiple languages—including English, Spanish, Arabic, Sanskrit, Pali, Hebrew, and Paiute—representing Christianity (various denominations), Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Baha'i, Native American, and Pagan traditions. Atheist thinker Anthony Shafton also shared his reflections.
World-renowned musician Oscar Dallas Smith played the raga Misra Shivarangini on bansuri, evoking deep emotions among attendees at the Unity Center of Reno. Indigenous spirituality exponent and Sundancer Savina V. Zuniga performed a sacred sageburning ritual, while religious leaders lit candles on a traditional Hindu temple lamp.
"We stand together as a united spiritual family, praying for Pope Francis' physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing, so he may continue inspiring millions toward a more compassionate and inclusive world," said Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism. Zed also urged global religious leaders to keep the Pope in their thoughts, wishing him healing as he furthers his ministry of peace, interfaith dialogue, and advocacy for the oppressed.
Hindu American Foundation Opposes Iowa Gender Policy Shift
DES MOINES, IO– The Iowa legislature has passed a bill that would remove gender identity from the state's civil rights protections, reversing a policy in place since 2007. The bill now awaits Governor Kim Reynolds' signature. If enacted, the law would eliminate protections against discrimination based on gender identity in employment, housing, education, and public spaces. Supporters claim it restores civil rights laws to their original intent by focusing on biological sex, while opponents argue it could lead to widespread discrimination and legal vulnerabilities. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has raised concerns about the bill's impact on religious freedoms. Hindu traditions have long recognized
non-binary identities, such as the "Third Nature" or "Kinnar" communities. HAF warns that the measure disregards these traditions and could undermine the rights of Hindus and other religious groups affirming non-binary identities. "Removing protections against gender identity discrimination affects all Iowans, not just transgender individuals," HAF stated, warning that businesses and property owners could discriminate based on perceived gender. HAF also noted that Third Nature identities have been legally recognized in South Asia for centuries and that LGBTQ acceptance has grown among Hindu Americans. If signed, Iowa would join a handful of states rolling back gender identity protections after nearly two decades.

their move, citing HIR's commitment to neutrality, stating that the piece was more opinionated than analytical. Dhillon's article highlighted the Khalistan movement's role in straining India-Canada relations, particularly after Canada's accusation that Indian agents were involved in the 2023 killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Singh criticized the article for equating Khalistan activism with terrorism and relying on unverified Indian government data. Judge: Meta Must Answer to Bias Claims in Lawsuit Filed by Rajaram
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Information technology worker Purushothaman Rajaram, software engineer Ekta Bhatia, and data scientist Qun Wang have filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms, alleging the company systematically favors foreign workers over U.S. citizens to cut labor costs, Reuters reported.
On February 25, U.S. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler ruled that the three U.S. citizens could proceed with their proposed class-action lawsuit. They claim they applied for multiple Meta positions between 2020 and 2024 but were repeatedly rejected due to Meta's alleged preference for visa holders.
The case, Rajaram et al. v. Meta Platforms Inc., is being heard in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California (No. 22-02920).
Beeler cited statistics showing that 15% of Meta's U.S. workforce consists of H-1B visa holders—far exceeding the national average of 0.5%—as potential evidence of favoritism.
Meta denied the allegations, calling them baseless and stating it would "vigorously defend" itself. The judge also referenced Meta's 2021 $14.25 million settlement over similar claims.
Initially dismissed in 2022, the lawsuit was revived in June 2023 by a federal appeals court under Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which prohibits discrimination based on alienage in contracts.

Federal Mandates Registration for Undocumented Immigrants

WASHINGTON, DCU.S. immigration officials announced that all undocumented individuals aged 14 and older must register with the federal government or face fines and imprisonment. Parents must register minors under 14. The registry, enforced by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), requires fingerprints and addresses. While federal law has long mandated such registration, enforcement has been rare. The requirement dates back to the Alien Registration Act of 1940 and was later included in the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. A post-9/11 program, the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System, targeted noncitizen males from 25 predominantly Muslim countries, but was dismantled in 2016 after leading to thousands of deportations without terrorism convictions.
The Trump administration emphasized its commitment to enforcing all immigration laws. Homeland Security officials stated that the registry is necessary for national security. A registration form and process will be announced soon, and registrants will receive identity cards that adults must carry at all times.

Boston Becomes Immigration Focus
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu prepares to testify before Congress on the city's protections for immigrant communities, advocating for inclusivity and safety.
BOSTON, TX— As Mayor Michelle Wu prepares to testify before Congress on Boston's protections for immigrant communities, tensions escalate between the city and the Trump administration over police cooperation in deportations. Trump's former border czar, Tom Homan, criticized Boston's police commissioner at the Conservative Political Action Conference, alleging that local authorities refused to hand over accused child rapists to ICE. He vowed to bring "hell" to Boston. ICE did not provide details on these claims, nor did Homan elaborate on his visit.
Boston, like other sanctuary cities, limits cooperation with ICE, only assisting in significant public safety cases such as human trafficking and drug trafficking.
At a House Oversight Committee hearing, Wu will join the mayors of Chicago, New York, and Denver to defend their cities' policies. Suffolk County DA Kevin Hayden emphasized that holding criminals accountable is a priority, but immigration consequences are a federal responsibility. He warned that increased ICE involvement could deter immigrant cooperation with law enforcement. Boston's Trust Act, updated in 2018, prevents local authorities from detaining individuals solely on ICE requests, aligning with a 2017 state court ruling. Wu denounced Homan's remarks as "clueless" and "insulting," while Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey called them "unproductive."
Meanwhile, faith leaders report growing fear among immigrants, and Wu's opponent, Josh Kraft, condemned Homan's rhetoric while supporting the removal of violent criminals. Republicans threaten to cut funding to sanctuary cities, while Boston suburbs Chelsea and Somerville are suing the Trump administration for constitutional violations.
Pramila Jayapal to Supporters: 'Grief Ends Here—Action
Starts Now
SEATTLE, WA – Democratic resistance to President Donald Trump's second term is surging, fueled by frustration over his aggressive policies, said Rep. Pramila Jayapal at a packed February 18 town hall with nearly 1,000 attendees. Jayapal, representing Seattle's 7th District, acknowledged that Democrats initially struggled to mobilize, caught in post-election shock. "They wanted hope, but they weren't quite ready to jump in. They were still grieving," she said. However, she declared, "There was a lull. But it's back. We are back!"—a statement met with resounding cheers. In the progressive stronghold of Seattle, the atmosphere was charged with alarm over Trump's actions. Jayapal strongly criticized the administration, calling Elon Musk's government involvement
an attempt to impose a "far-right, authoritarian, white ultranationalist Christian ideology under a dictatorial leader—otherwise known as American fascism."
To counteract Trump's agenda, she outlined a three-part strategy: using congressional platforms to expose his actions, supporting lawsuits against illegal policies, and mobilizing grassroots protests. She urged attendees to push Republican representatives in swing districts to resist Trump's influence. While advocating for strategic confrontation, Jayapal also stressed the need for proactive Democratic policies, focusing on living wages, universal healthcare, and affordable childcare. "We won't shy away from what must be done," she vowed.

U.S. Lawmakers Question Shein's IPO While Kash Patel Eyes Profit
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kash Patel, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), could earn millions from his prior ties to Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein, which is preparing for a U.S. IPO this year, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Patel, who previously consulted for Shein's parent company, Elite Depot, received stock compensation valued between $1 million and $5 million, as disclosed during his FBI confirmation process.
His financial links to Shein have raised national security concerns, given the company's heavy reliance on Chinese factories despite relocating its headquarters to Singapore in 2021.
Charles Kupperman, former deputy national security adviser under Trump and a close ally of Patel, has urged him to
divest all Shein-related holdings if confirmed. While the FBI downplays the likelihood of Patel overseeing Shein-related matters, compensation experts warn that his financial interest in a foreign company could create conflicts of interest.
Patel has already pledged to sell shares in Meta and Apple. Meanwhile, Shein faces global criticism over labor practices, and its prior U.S. IPO efforts met bipartisan resistance, including from now-Secretary of

Alleged ISIS-Linked Illegal Immigrant Faces Charges for Terror Funding, Gun Crimes, and Fraud
Mansuri Manuchekhri, 33, lived in Brooklyn, New York, and paid an American woman to enter into a sham marriage with him
NEW YORK, NY- A Tajik man living illegally in the United States has been charged with attempting to support the Islamic State and affiliated terror groups, the Justice Department announced Wednesday. Mansuri Manuchekhri, 33, who resided in Brooklyn, New York, appeared before a federal judge and was ordered detained. He faces charges of providing financial support to ISIS, illegal possession of firearms, and immigration fraud. Authorities allege Manuchekhri facilitated $70,000 in payments to ISIS members in Turkey and Syria, including an individual arrested for an attack on an Istanbul church. Prosecutors claim he trained with assault rifles at U.S. shooting ranges and expressed readiness to fight for ISIS. Manuchekhri entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in June 2016 but overstayed after it expired in December. In 2017, he attempted to gain legal status through a sham marriage, but his petition was denied. The FBI was alerted in August 2024 after a family member reported threats and concerns about his potential for violence. Investigators found ISIS propaganda on his iCloud and evidence of weapons possession. If convicted, he faces up to 45 years in prison.

In 2022, undocumented immigrants contributed approximately $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes—an average of $8,889 per person—according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP). They make up about 4.5% of the U.S. workforce, and comprehensive immigration reform could further enhance their economic impact through increased tax revenue, job creation, and higher wages. But how do undocumented immigrants pay taxes? They obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), issued by the IRS, allowing them to file tax returns. To get an ITIN, applicants must provide certified identification, such as a passport or USCIS photo ID. Paying taxes offers key benefits, including proof of income for financial aid, building credit history, and demonstrating "good moral character" to USCIS. Additionally, ITINs enable undocumented immigrants to open bank accounts at institutions like Chase and Bank of America, promoting financial stability.
