Going On At Luke’s
W
elcome to St. Luke’s! Congratulations to all new undergraduates, post graduates and international students, you have finally arrived at the grandest campus in all the Land. Welcome back to all returning students too! As you probably know, St. Luke’s is a most prestigious historical campus heaped in history and traditions. Many of which, you will have to learn the hard way, but here’s a tip… avoid purple and stay to the end of the bop! GOAL (Going On At Luke’s) is your monthly campus magazine, written by Lukies for Lukies spiced up with as much Lukie Banter as is healthy to consume
Freshers’ 2011, Issue 1
in one dose. Make sure you pick yours up to see what’s going on and if you fancy stitching a mate up or need a regular outlet for your excess banter – GOAL is the place! Make sure you get to know your campus, it’s essential to frequent Cross Keys and the Bop, check out the Info Point for any Guild related issues and don’t miss the Summer Ball! Need lecture notes? Problem solved – there’s a print shop on campus and it’s cheaper than printing normally! Ideal! As far as the Guild is concerned James Fox is Vice President Participation and Campuses, so he’s in charge of St. Luke’s and Sam Grace is St. Luke’s Forum
Officer, he’ll fight for all Lukie issues and represent Luke’s in the Guild Forum. Anyway! Get involved and try not to get too many disciplinaries or library fines and I know you’ll have a great time!
inside the lukie experience lukie news lukies on holiday welcome week lukie likies things to do
Disclaimer: This paper applauds controversy, encourages jovial abuse and at times, lacks political correctness. Please take it in the spirit it is intended, it’s just a bit of Lukie fun full of light-hearted banter which will hopefully do nothing but demonstrate why at the end of the day, everyone wants to be a Lukie… enjoy!
So you turn up, Move in… what now? Well… now the fun begins! Look out for your welcome team all of Freshers’ Week they’ll be happy to answer any questions as well as taking you out to the events and nights out in Freshers’ week. At the end of Fresher’s week is the Traffic Light Bop – a legendary first Bop back and a cardinal sin to miss. Once you’ve experienced a Bop, you won’t want to miss another one!
I
n the first term, make sure you get to the Varsity matches and bring your binoculars for the annual streakers… it’s normally a very cold night. December brings the Safer Sex Ball or SSB, which is always a Lukie favourite, as it gives us a chance to show off our athletic tanned bods (and check out everyone else’s too). Little tip for the boys, if you do plan to fake tan… get some help from the girls! Cider and black is our bread and butter and the bop is our spiritual home, ex-Lukies even come back from ‘proper-jobs’ and ‘the real life’ to enter into the Lukie Bubble for one-night only! Cross Going On At Luke’s
Keys holds many fantastic events through-out the year, including, the Hypnotist, Live Music, Live Sports and special one of Events such as last year’s RAG Take Me Out: Lukie Edition, which was a huge success. We love the bop for many reasons, you can wear the most ridiculous fancy dress, request any song you want, you’ll know at least 50% of the people there, sing ‘Hey Jude’ at the end and polish off the night with the ultimate test of lads: a naked quad. What other way to finish off a year, but with the St. Luke’s Summer Ball, imagine it, the quad filled with amusement rides, live music, free candyfloss and bop all in one night! It’s truly magical.

…plus Guild update and RAG
I
’m sure you have all heard the news that catered halls on St. Luke’s this year were undersubscribed and are therefore not open. Although this is sad news, with less of a constant
T
student presence on campus, we should not let it get us down! There is a real commitment to keep the things we love as normal: Bop, Summer Ball and other regular events will go ahead! The halls
he Guild is Exeter’s Student Union and you’re automatically a member! With 2,000 students based at St. Luke’s we can make a big storm when things are not going our way, and it’s my job to make sure we are always considered in the Guild. I’m Sam Grace, St. Luke’s Forum Officer, and if you want to get more involved in the running of St. Luke’s, I’m the man to speak to! Drop me an email (sg311) or catch me round campus anytime, just don’t try and get a sensible answer at the Bop. I’ll be looking for a campus committee this term, which is a great opportunity to get involved in the running of St. Luke’s, with a nice budget to make a difference! The positions will be Media Rep, Undergrad Rep, Postgrad Rep and Secretary. Going On At Luke’s
are currently being offered for next year as catered residences again, although this may change depending on demand. With the closure of St. Luke’s halls this brings a new focus onto Rowancroft and James Owen Court, which they may have lacked slightly in the past! If we manage to integrate the students in these satellite halls into Lukie Life our events will thrive with 300 rooms at Rowancroft and 275 at James Owen Court the students we can bring onto campus eclipse the 200 lost from catered residences. So this really is the tine to stand up and be counted, let the University know we are here to stay and get involved with as much as possible and make your mark.
O
ver the past year RAG (raising and giving) has taken St. Luke’s by storm, working our way up from our very first cake sale, to providing the must-have I <3 Bop T-shirt and finally producing the memorable Take Me Out: Lukie Edition for Comic Relief! Last year we raised almost £2,000 for various charities! We’ll be looking to form a committee within the first few weeks of term, so make sure you sign up to RAG at the Activities Fair and get your ass to the interviews! Daryl Hurst and Sam Grace are the St. Luke’s RAG Supervisors (dh296 / sg311) Make sure you get down to the RAG event on the Quad on Friday 30th September: come play some volleyball, jump on the Bouncy Castle and maybe even grab a cake!
