There’s also a special message from our local Breast Cancer group, the 1066 Pink Ladies. They are a very friendly group who care and support others going through the same fear and worry, well done girls and thank you for sending in your details, I wish you every success possible. Have you been harvesting ready fruits? Have you bought your bulbs ready? Ian explains how deep to plant them and which way up! Thanks Ian. We also have a fabulous Christmas cake recipe this month, from Janet Van Den Bussche. Well it is fast approaching and you must have seen the advent calendars appearing? I did earlier this month! I know, I know! Some of my friends have nearly completed their present shopping! Ahhh! In the aim to help promote businesses, to raise awareness for local charities and to serve the local Bexhill community the Bexhillian works hard on being informative and relevant to readers of all ages. CHRISTMAS IS COMING... It’s that time of year when the kids go back to school the nights and mornings start to feel chilly. As the shops fill their shelves with Christmas goodies our thoughts inevitably turn to our own preparations. Everything for Christmas is so easy to buy but sometimes perhaps it’s nice to make some things ourselves? Christmas Cake is very easy to make and you can tailor the recipe to your own tastes – personally I like lots of cherries and nuts whilst other people enjoy a cake without nuts or cherries! For this recipe I have put individual measurements for each fruit or nuts but you can alter the amounts providing that the overall measurements remain the same. If you have children they do enjoy weighing out the ingredients and stirring the cake and it can become one of your Christmas traditions. Preparation is quite simple just a little time consuming and a homemade cake can be more expensive than a bought one. During September it’s easy to add packets of dried fruits, nuts and other ingredients which spreads the cost. The first stage of making the cake is the easiest, simply pour your fruits into a large bowl and add the soaking alcohol then either cover with cling film and put aside for a day or put them into a large kilner jar. The following morning turn the fruits and then start to prepare the cake batter. Sift the flour, salt and spices in a large mixing bowl then add the sugar, eggs, butter and warmed treacle. Then mix the entire mixture very thoroughly. Then fold in the soaked fruits and chopped nuts then finally adding the grated lemon and orange zests. Transfer the mixture into a 20cm loose bottomed cake tin – which should be greased and lined with baking parchment. Smooth the top of the cake and cover the top with a circle of greased baking parchment. Then wrap the cake and tin with a double thickness of greaseproof paper and tie with string – this protects the cake against burning. Cook the cake for at least 4 hours or until the centre feels springy when pressed. Once the cake is cooked and cold then wrap it in a layer of greaseproof and cover with foil and place

into an airtight tin. I then ‘feed’ the cake – by making small holes in the top of the cake and spooning alcohol onto it. A month before Christmas the cake should be covered in warmed apricot jam, then cover with marzipan and then icing and decorate - again another job the children love. Enjoy your cake.

YOUR gardening STORIES

gardening advice for OCTOBER The Halloween displays are appearing, apples and leaves are dropping in abundance, personally my favourite and busiest time of the year. Go into any garden centre or DIY store you are bound to see the vast array of bulbs ready to be planted, but how deep? Where? Which way up? – I have featured the answers below.

It’s Harvest Time

Get picking now, gently lift and twist, if it comes away easy it is ready. Check apples and pears for scab disease – black scabby blotches and cracking. Affected fruit won’t store but can be eaten now. Check main crop potatoes for damage.

Hedges

Don’t put those ladders away just yet, if you haven’t, up until mid October is still a good time to get those conifers tidied. After that tender new shoots may suffer frost damage, the biggest offender for turning your hedge brown.

Bulb Planting

Planting bulbs, corms and tubers is an easy way to ensure colourful displays in your garden, in Spring before the rest of the garden has woken from its winter dormancy. Bulbs can be planted in containers or borders, and look particularly effective naturalized in grass.

Some tubers, such as Begonias are best started off indoors or in a frost free greenhouse.

Lawn Care

This month is the last opportunity to scarify, aerate and top dress lawns. Scarification removes layers of thatch and can be done with either a spring-tine rake or a powered scarifier. Afterwards apply an autumn lawn feed; these are low in nitrogen, so discouraging lush green growth that would only succumb to cold and diseases over the winter months.

Trees and Shrubs

Planted that plant in the wrong place? Don’t despair as October is an ideal time for moving and planting trees, shrubs and climbers, as well as for hedge planting. Bare-rooted deciduous trees and shrubs, as well as root-wrapped evergreens, become available towards the end of the month and are generally much cheaper to buy than potted plants.

Ian Ward.

www.jwardgardens.co.uk Facebook: J Ward Gardens

As a rule, most will need a well drained soil that won’t sit waterlogged in Winter which may cause them to rot. Always plant bulbs with growing tip facing upwards.

the

pointed

Bulb planting depths vary depending on their size and species; but as a rule of thumb, most bulbs can be planted at a depth of approximately three times their own height.

could teach road craft to young would-be drivers, plus cyclists and pedestrians. “This is a dream that is just turning into the germ of a plan. What’s now needed is a feasibility study and help from local experts to ensure that the project gives best value to potential visitors and investors, and the most benefit to the town’s economy.” he said. Mr Whitt (65) has formed a steering committee to oversee the feasibility study. It includes representatives of the Town Team and the Bexhill 100, Rother District councillors plus local businessman Mark Plews.

Bexhill staged Britain’s first organised series of motor races on Whit Monday 1902 – and to create a new tourist attraction and pay homage to this history Mr Whitt, a former PR guru, wants to establish Bexhill Motoring World... As envisaged it would eventually be a complex the size of the De La Warr Pavilion with car parking and be linked to the town via a park and ride scheme for centre visitors to use Bexhill’s facilities and shopping opportunities.

Also helping are the Royal Automobile Club, Rother District Council, The Harmsworth Family Trust (Daily Mail) and Hastings Direct. The committee is also reviewing ideas for an annual commemoration of the Whit Monday races. Mr Whitt has bought a Toyota sports car and given it the number plate S33 BXL (see Bexhill).

In time it is hoped that the core development will add:

• Workshop for training would-be mechanics • Small cinema for showing motor racing related films, plus road safety promotions. • Computer gaming suite to allow visitors to “drive” the world’s best racing circuits.

It’s hoped to have a mock road layout as a place where police and road safety experts

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

more thoughts FOR SINGLE PARENTS As a single parent, be sure to try and replenish your own emotional “bank account” which could well be overdrawn! It is enormously painful trying to ensure your children’s emotional well-being, and remove their sense of aloneness after the loss of the other parent, while experiencing loneliness yourself. If at all possible, involve yourself in positive adult activities and support networks – research local community and church groups where you can go with the children as a family, or sports facilities that have activities for kids and adults. Or perhaps you can find something here:• www.netmums.com/activities/ free-family-fun • www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/detectives • www.thesimpledollar.com/ 100-things-to-do-during-a-money-freeweekend Those who have gone through the divorce or death of a spouse have many grief issues to face, and being a single parent might bring back all sorts of unresolved issues from your own childhood. Some people find it helpful each day to pour out the jumble of all their feelings and thoughts in a journal kept specially for this, that it brings insight and makes some order and sense of what has happened, and the way forward. But it will be important for you to identify these feelings, hurts and losses with a trusted friend or counselor, and work through them, so that you will be free to respond adequately to your children. Your sensitivity to your own struggles will increase your sensitivity to your children. If you minimise your own pain, you will tend to minimise the hurts of your children. If you get stuck in your own pain and don’t move past it, your children may begin to feel responsible for your feelings or even for your happiness.

Allow your kids to know about your own hurts. While considering their age and development, let them know that you hurt over the divorce or death. Express your regrets and sadness, but don’t expect them to meet your emotional needs – that’s not their job! Expressing your pain let’s them hear the truth about the situation – uncertainty is often more frightening than reality. And again reassure them that it was not their fault, they did nothing wrong – they are in no way to blame. And keep on keeping on, bless you!

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

Questions on new pension freedoms How long will my money last?

We are all living longer, on average a 65 year old in good health is expected to live for 24 years after retirement and it is thought that 25% of us will live to see our 95th birthday. Retirement savings will have to last for a long time, possibly 30 years or more. Leaving your money invested for longer could make a big difference to your lifestyle along your retirement journey.

How much State Pension will I get?

The amount of state pension is not the same for everyone and it depends on your employment history and when you were born. Remember the State Pension is designed to cover only a very basic standard of living without any luxuries.

What about savings I have?

If you have bank saving accounts, premium bonds or ISAs, it may be better for you to take money from these first before drawing from your pension plan. If you own your home you might think about downsizing or renting it out to fund your retirement.

What are my future financial needs?

Consider all of your living expenses, like household bills and family costs, and how these may change over the coming years. Remember to budget for holidays, transport and house repairs. Also factor in the fact that your financial needs are likely to reduce as you get older and become less active, but keep in mind that in your later years costs of long term care may be required.

How can I minimise my tax bill?

Consider your personal tax allowances and plan to take your retirement savings in a way which makes the most use of your personal tax allowance so you don’t have to pay tax unnecessarily.

Should I buy an annuity?

An annuity is a promise by an insurance company to pay you an income for the rest of your life. You should check the terms of the annuity before

you commit as they cannot usually be changed afterwards. It is worth shopping around different insurance companies before you buy as prices can vary.

Will I lose any my welfare benefits?

If you are receiving state benefits or Tax Credits then taking your retirement savings could impact on the level of those benefits. This is a complicated area and expected to change in the near future. Make sure you understand how your state benefits, tax credits or long term care needs would be affected before deciding to access your retirement benefits.

What happens when I die?

If you die before age 75, any money left in your pension plan will be paid to your survivors free of any tax. If you die after 75, money paid to your survivors may be subject to tax depending on their circumstances. Retirement savings which remain in pension plans are not normally counted for inheritance tax purposes. If you have purchased an annuity, benefits payable after your death will depend on the insurance contract.

Where do I get more help?

This article aims to give some informal hints and tips. We recommend that you always seek professional financial advice, talk to your pension plan provider for details about your options. After that, we would always recommend contacting your authorised, regulated, professional financial adviser, who will help you build a full and concise retirement plan.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

scheduling your social media If you have read my other articles you will know that I am a great advocate of engaging with others in social media, especially with businesses. It’s great for building relationships and trust around what it is that you can offer. Sometimes you just don’t have the time to do that and it’s as much as you can to go online and post something to ensure others see that you are still alive! Make your social media efforts easier. Did you know that you can schedule posts? If you are coming up to a busy time in your business calendar or are going on a break and you want to continue having a social media presence then being able to schedule becomes invaluable. You can use a social media platforms’ own scheduling tool and for many this is enough, but there are third party applications out there that provide an easy way to schedule your social media posts across multiple social media accounts from one single dashboard. But which third party application is best? There are many platforms such as Social Sprout, Tweetdeck and Hootsuite to name just a few. Each has positives and negatives; and each has their own pricing structure. At the end of the day I suggest that you do your research and definitely check out their free version, testing rigorously before purchasing any pro version. What suits others, may not suit your needs and budget. Bulk scheduling I have always liked, and will continue using the native platforms to view posts and to ensure engagement is made with other accounts. Because I train people to use these platforms it is imperative that I keep up to date with their

platform changes. But for scheduling I have for the last three years been using Hootsuite, I really liked their bulk scheduling option which allowed me to upload a CSV file of my hints and tips, which I scheduled over the duration of the month. But now there’s a new kid on the block! Social Scheduler has a simple clean minimalistic interface that doesn’t appear to be as intimidating as other applications. It is fully responsive and is accessible from your PC or mobile device, built using the latest technologies and frameworks to giving a better, streamlined experience. I love the fact I can assemble my client’s social media accounts in one place within their own group. This platform thrives on feedback from users and therefore being improved continuously. I was reluctant to use the platform until a bulk up-loader was introduced. Da Dah! I have now used this new module and it ticks all the boxes. There is a lovely drag and drop feature when adding images or CSV files. And for those of you who have no idea what a CSV file is or how to compose one to bulk upload, they have a template generator just for you! Remember…. social media isn’t just about scheduling, you have to engage with other accounts too, but finding a user-friendly social media scheduler certainly helps!

Breast Cancer Support Group Our local group was set up in 1981 by both patients and professionals to meet the needs of those diagnosed with breast cancer, be it emotional, spiritual or practical, with a gentle emphasis on helping each other to realise that one’s approach to breast cancer does help to maintain health. Now after 30 years, many ladies and their families have been involved with us. We are a friendly and informal group who welcome people to share their experiences and help them cope with problems before, during and at any time after their treatment. We have demonstrations and talks from beauticians, complementary therapists, and others, which are always great fun as well as morale boosters, and we try to arrange the occasional social event.

But most of all it is the support we are able to give each other knowing that we share similar fears, worries and problems that is of the greatest help and comfort. We can meet anyone one to one, or at our monthly meetings which are comfortable and welcoming, away from the hospital, held on the second Wednesday of the month in St Leonard’s Church lounge, Undercliff, St Leonards TN38 0YW which is kindly lent to us for our us and where free car parking is available. BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE

PLANNING AN EQUITY RELEASE? You should consider a Will and a Power of Attorney! What do people generally use released equity for? Using the money for home improvements and holidays – that trip of a lifetime – is massive but there’s the other end of the market too, when clients release equity because they have no choice. A couple might have an interest-only mortgage which is coming to the end of its term and be in a position where their existing lender can’t give them anymore so they’re in a nightmarish situation and being threatened with repossession. And often people don’t want to sell or move somewhere cheaper because that would mean leaving all their friends and family behind. Is it law that a homeowner releasing equity must have a will? No it’s not law – it’s just best practice to have a will and also a Power of Attorney. To be eligible to release equity, clients have to be at least 55 and typically they’re in their late 60s so it’s all part of holistic retirement planning. And wills and Power of Attorneys relate to that too – people ensuring their affairs are in order for peace of mind. I believe that equity release and will writing are going to become more married over time as, with the Government’s pension reforms, there’s a lot of work going on to make sure everybody is looking at retirement in its entirety. What sort of problems can clients hit with equity release if they don’t have a will and a Power of Attorney? Well, for couples not having a Power of Attorney can cause problems. A good example is draw-

down products which is when a lender gives a lump sum at the beginning. A client might take out £10,000 initially because that’s what they require immediately, then ring fence a certain amount – maybe £50,000 – that they won’t be paying interest against. But for a couple, to draw against that £50,000 – generally in chunks of £2-5000 at a time – both of them need to agree and sign the papers. If they don’t have a Power of Attorney and one of them loses mental capacity that facility is essentially going to be withdrawn as only one of them can make the request. So Power of Attorneys are really important in instances like that, ensuring that the spouse and a third party are appointed so that property and affairs can continue to be managed as our clients would wish. Obviously there’s a cost associated with making a will so it has to be down to personal choice. And there could be people who just don’t have a problem with the intestacy rules and are happy for their money to go wherever so, for them, setting down that a will has to be part and parcel of an equity release scheme would be unfair, although it’s obviously strongly advised to be a good idea to sort it out.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES... While the Summer may seem to be ideal for getting out and about, now is the time to be outside. As the seasons change and the sunshine fades away, all the beauty of Autumn appears. Trees take on the familiar reds and golds we associate with this time of the year and leaves begin to fall. Rather than hibernate indoors, taking a stroll in the countryside can do much to lift our mood as the nights draw in. The colours of Autumn can inspire us and lift our spirits, so put on your wellies and head out into the countryside. Taking exercise and making the most of the light available can help fend off the “winter blues.” According to the SAD Association, about seven per cent of people are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of winter depression and a further 17 percent have mild symptoms or “winter blues”. Waking up exhausted and wanting to sleep more is common in Autumn. This is due to longer hours of darkness which increases the amount of melatonin, the sleep hormone. If you can, stick to a routine of going to bed and getting up at the same time. Shorter days and lack of sunshine reduces the body’s production of serotonin, which may influence mood in a way that may lead to depression. Seasonal food contains serotonin-boosting carbs such as potatoes, pasta and rice and can help stave off low mood. Just because it’s cold outside don’t just curl up in front of the TV. Certainly an evening watching a feel good film or chatting over home cooked food can be nice and make you feel better about life, but seeing friends is a must. Numerous studies have shown

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES

that spending time in the company of others prevents us feeling isolated and stops us getting down in the dumps.

Finally think about getting fit with endorphin boosting exercise, not only will this be good for you but you will have a three month head start on those who join the gym in the New Year! Until next time.

STORIES HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING

Coping with... FEELING DOWN IN THE WINTER At this time of year it is very easy to feel down with winter approaching. Yoga practices can help us to feel positive and stay healthier during these wintry months.

Yoga is so much more than just about the postures or the ‘asanas’ just the same as health is not just about the physical. The first chapter of the ‘Yoga Sutras’, the main text defining yoga and its practices, is about the mind. It is concerned about ‘the problems encountered in reaching a state of yoga and ways in which these problems can be handled’. Most of these ‘problems’ relate to the workings and mischievousness of the mind! There are many definitions for yoga, but the most universal description is the drawing together, or ‘yoking’ of the body; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Only when there is comfort within all these elements can one move towards ‘kaivalya’ or perfect contentment – the final state of yoga. The key element that rules our actions and thoughts, and impacts our health and wellbeing is the mind.

Another definition of ‘asana’ is ‘attitude’ and this exemplifies the connection between the physical body and the mind. Think of the posture of someone who is angry, sad, happy or aggressive. If we adopt these postures the mental attitude naturally follows. The posture one performs during a yoga session will have an effect on all parts of the body; they are all interconnected. Therefore the physical element to yoga practice is a good starting place. Let’s relate this to how we may be ‘acting’ now, with the prospect of winter, into something practical. We may have gloomy feelings and as our mind dictates, our body will start to show what we are thinking and feeling. Our posture is probably closed and more stooped - a natural tightening and closing of the body when one feels a bit down and cold. Our breath is inhibited and shallower due to this closing in and compression of the chest area. With awareness we can make a conscious effort to reverse these unhelpful feelings. Yoga develops this awareness. Standing tall and practising opening postures enables deeper breathing increasing energy and better gut function, whilst also stimulating the central nervous system. When our body feels better and healthier we feel more positive. It is the mind – our attitude and awareness that comes first, to allow for positive action.
