Merry Christmas! Christmas shopping to do, decorations to put up and December’s issue almost done; lovely. I don’t know about you but I’m particularly looking forward to decorating our new tree this year. For those of us who have one or more children, you may be feeling the pressure of being faced with lists as long as your arm for Father Christmas to bring as much of it as he can carry! Well thanks to our calming Steve Clifford, he explains how to avoid Christmas conflicts, note to self: pin up Steve’s tips on the fridge door on Christmas Eve! Also as a parent I am enjoying reading Susie Marriott’s articles about children’s development, so thank you as well Susie. But after all that, it’s not all about the kids, us adults need to enjoy the Christmas and New Year celebrations just as much. Well there are plenty of entertaining events going on around Bexhill! There’s some great live music on at Café No48 in December, Christmas events at Coast Restaurant and at Cavells, Santa Dash on the 5th, Christmas markets and fairs on the 4th and 5th, all in Bexhill. Comedy Clubs at the DLWP, 9th-19th. Party night at Manor Barn on the 11th too! You see? Loads to see and enjoy. So in closing, wrap up warm and I hope that everyone, every age has fun this Christmas!

YOUR gardening STORIES

gardening advice for DECEMBER The November rain certainly came thick and fast with some mighty wind thrown in for good measure just to test our resolve at the end of the year. Hopefully any wind damage has now been repaired and some of you are still hanging in there in the ever increasing inclement weather. There are still plenty of jobs to be done before a well earned rest over the Christmas break.

Lawns

The unusually temperate weather has meant the grass has still plenty of growth, the tricky thing has been trying to get it cut if it is waterlogged, it is better to keep off as you will do more damage than good. Fallen leaves will kill the grass very quickly so keep raking fallen leaves as they build up, great exercise and compost! Now is a good time to service your mower ready for next year.

Birds

This month birds will really need our help – make sure clean water is available and that after a frost it does not remain frozen. Buy good quality bird food and fat or suet balls, ensure feeding stations are well out of the way of cats and enjoy the company of our feathered friends throughout the winter!

Trees, shrubs and climbers •

From now until March is the ideal time to plant bare rooted deciduous hedging – the most economical way to establish a hedge. Beech and hornbeam (similar to beech but more suitable for heavy soils) both keep their leaves over the winter and are therefore good for screening, whilst hawthorn is the ‘country classic’ – perfect for a natural looking yet almost impenetrable barrier. Tidy up trees and shrubs, cutting out any dead, diseased or damaged wood where

necessary. (And on the Christmas present front, sharp new secateurs and loppers are a gardener’s dream!!) Make a Christmas wreath using evergreen sprigs from your garden such as holly, ivy, spruce and decorations such as berries and fir cones, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks and wide, wired ribbon. They make great pre-sents and the children can also get involved too. Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls)

General garden maintenance

Keep planting tulips for a stunning Spring display. Improve clay soils by incorporating organic matter like composted bark and wellrotted farmyard manure (as long as the soil is not too wet.)

Houseplants • • •

Christmas Poinsettias should be placed in warm room, away from draughts to ensure they last as long as possible. Put indoor Hyacinths in a cool room if they become too warm the flowers will finish earlier. And finally find a nice comfy chair, glass of bubbly, next years’ bulb and plant catalogue and get planning for 2016.

Merry Christmas and a Happy healthy gardening year everyone! Ian Ward.

photography YOUR STORIES

A PHOTOGRAPHERS VIEW – The best camera? Christmas is coming and somewhere, someone is thinking about a new camera to fit into their stocking. Maybe it’s time for an upgrade? A better camera obviously takes better pictures. Not necessarily. Even with an ultra-expensive top of the range camera, in the wrong hands, mediocre photography is still possible. I learnt that the hard way.

Consider the new generation of Compact System Cameras, (CSC) which are lighter and smaller. Don’t underestimate what a heavy camera will do to your shoulders and joints. You could spend more time with the local osteopath than taking photographs. Features such as articulated rear screens enable the easy use of the camera at low viewpoints.

hristmas C t a e Gr gift idea!

Nevertheless, it’s an exciting time in camera design. Manufacturers are looking back, revisiting classic styling and adding a 21st century twist, or radically reimagining what a camera should look like. Technical innovation has gone beyond pixel inflation with cameras settling between 16 and 24 megapixels, (with the odd exception), which is more than adequate. As engineers add in new capabilities, most changes are genuine improvements, but some can be solutions looking for a problem. Don’t get distracted. Concentrate on separating out the “I want” from the “I need”. As a photographer do you need 4K High Definition video? If not, there are pre-owned bargains to be had.

Your knees will thank you in years to come, (trust me on this one), and a new generation of electronic viewfinders (EVF) can now display superb crispness and clarity. But even with all these advances, there is one key question, beyond the seduction of brands and widgets; “do I like this camera?” That’s the bottom line, because the best camera you can have is the one that you really want to use.

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

character & ability (age: 6-11 yrs) Knowing and Responding to my Children’s Development – Developing Character and Ability (Middle and Late Childhood; 6-11years) These kids are learning how to deal productively with their world, both within and outside the family: they are discovering and exploring new interests, and developing competencies physically, mentally and emotionally. At this stage they need parents who genuinely know them, and who are committed to lovingly meet their needs, as they discover how well they can do the tasks before them – they can’t do this properly on their own. This is also an important time for other adults to be a meaningful part of our children’s growing up journey. Several issues affect our children’s progress through this stage:

Competition

Healthy competition gives kids the opportunity to identify and develop their strengths and work on their weaknesses. With proper support they can learn how to solve problems. If you’ve ever spent time with a group this age when they’re out on the playground, it takes about 5mins before “He cheated!... It’s not fair!...You’re stupid!” is heard. An adult is needed to act as referee, and help things settle out, without overcontrolling the situation. It’s important how we handle both winning and losing, defeat and disappointment as well as victory, and what better place to learn than in a loving home. Team experiences teach interdependency and mutual support; of particular importance in this “Me” generation, that places such value on personal freedom and self-sufficiency alone.

Achievement Kids this age need to experience the approval of their parents for their achievements; this does not mean that

their worth is based on what they do, so its a delicate balance to keep. If its not obvious what on earth they’re good at, and proves to be a bit of a challenge, keep digging! And remember that approving of their character strengths such as their caring, politeness, helpfulness, patience, perseverance is an important aspect of meeting this need. The encouragement and support of other adults – a coach, a cub mistress, a teacher, a grandparent, a favourite aunt or uncle – can spur them on to take risks and reach for goals otherwise seen as impossible.

Sibling Rivalry Lots of brothers and

sisters who fight are also close, and share good times together. We just need loads of patience, cloth ears and sensible boundaries, and if we do need to step in, call for a separation of space! But when kids are getting seriously hurt physically or emotionally, and there are few positive times together, it can sometimes be a parent problem, when one or both parents consistently favour one of the children. We need to work hard at meeting the needs of all of our children individually. Or it might be Mum or Dad is too involved outside the home, and never there; or the parents’ marriage is perceived as going downhill; and so the kids kick off to get attention. Sometimes it can help giving each child individual attention by turn, choosing some meaningful activity, spread over a period of time. So be there for the games, concerts and contests; empathise and comfort when your child has struggles; perhaps purposefully develop relationships with other families whose children are of similar ages and interests, and who can be a positive force in the life of your child.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

have you heard of these words... ‘Sexting’ ‘Cybersex’ ‘Nude-Selfie’

What is ‘Sexting’?

It’s “an exchange of sexual messages or images” and “creating, sharing and forwarding sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images” through mobile phones and the Internet. Defined by the NSPCC in their research titled: Children, Young People and ‘Sexting’ As a parent myself, this is a subject that horrifies me. When considering what to write about this month, I asked for the help of the lovely Janet Kealey from Next Steps Life Skills and Training. Her Bexhill based company assists and supports people who work with vulnerable children and adults.

Let me ask you some questions? •

Do you know what your son or daughter is doing online right now? • Who do they communicate with via their social media accounts? • Who are they chatting on the latest chat app? ‘Sexting’ is often seen as flirting by children and young people who consider it to be part of normal life. Most young people do not see ‘sexting’ as a problem and are reluctant to talk to adults about it because they are afraid of being judged or having their phones taken away.

Some scary statistics! • • • •

11% of teens will admit to sending pictures to strangers 80% of teens under 18 start sexting Girls feel more pressured to send sexy texts, images or emails than boys There was a 28% increase in calls to Childline in 2012/13 that mentioned ‘sexting’.

• • •

Too trusting, think that they are in love In a long distant relationship Showing pride in their body.

What can we do?

Please don’t wait for something to happen. We know it isn’t always easy to talk about sex, dating and relationships with teenagers, but it’s better to talk about these issues before something happens. Please remind your son or daughter that once an image is sent, there’s no getting it back. They no longer have control of it and it could end up anywhere!! Talk to them about making positive decisions and about peer pressure. Make them understand that no matter how great the pressure is, the potential social humiliation could be a hundred times worse. Please make sure they understand about taking responsibility for images they send and receive. If they send images on, they’re distributing pornography, and they could get into trouble with the police! Janet has recommended that if you are at all worried about your child receiving a sexual text, image, DM* or email, then to contact www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre. Here’s a link to an informative website should you want more information on how to keep your children safe online then visit www.saferinternet.org.uk *DM is a Direct Message via social media. A private message. Janet Kealey is available if you have any further concerns: www.nextstepslifeskills.co.uk

Why do they do it?

There are many reasons, but here are a few… • A way of ‘proving’ their sexuality • ‘Everyone else is doing it peer pressure and wanting to fit in • They may be experiencing bullying or harassment or being blackmailed into sending them

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

landlords - beat the new tax changes The chancellor’s plan to remove mortgage interest tax relief, announced in the Budget and effective from 2017, will hit hundreds of thousands of property investors. George Osborne at a stroke wiped almost 11% off the gross returns from buy-to-let properties, leaving many landlords facing the prospect of a future with increasing year on year losses, when he slashed higher-rate relief on mortgages in the Budget. These losses could compound further should interest rates rise. This tax change, which begins in 2017, will see landlords lose a quarter of their higher-rate relief each year until 2020, when it will be restricted to 20% on all mortgage interest. How to beat the tax changes If landlords remortgage now, they will protect themselves against rising borrowing costs and they may be able to claw back the shortfalls from the new tax changes. With tax relief available to higher-rate taxpayers being phased out, it will become more important for landlords to reduce their borrowing costs.

Remortgage

As an example, if a buy-to-let landlord is paying 5% on a typical £120,000 mortgage, which has a rental income of £750 per month or £9,000 annually. After allowing for expenses, agents’ fees and mortgage interest he could be left with a £612 annual profit after tax. However, when tax relief is reduced to 20% this £612 profit turns into an annual loss of £588. By remortgaging typically at, 3.79% with a five-year fixed-rate loan, he could save £1,452 annually on his interest bill, turning that annual loss back into a profit of £574. By taking no action and if interest rates rise to say 7% by the time that higher rate tax relief has completely disappeared in 2020, you could be looking at an annual loss of £2,784.

Utilise your spouse’s personal allowance

When a profit is made, if your spouse is not working, you may be able to assign part or all of the rental income to them, allowing them to exploit their personal tax allowance, due to

rise to £12,500 by 2020, or 20% tax band.

Form a company

The Government is cutting corporation tax to 19% in 2017 and 18% in 2020. One way for higherrate taxpayers to cut their tax bills might be to invest via a company, but proceed with caution, as there can be complications. By being a business, all costs can be offset against rental income, so in theory profits may be further improved. Within a business, income can only be paid out to the directors as a dividend. From next April they can each receive £5,000 annually tax free. After that, dividends paid to higher rate taxpayers are reduced by 32.5%, while basicrate taxpayers pay a 7.5% dividend tax.

Reduce borrowings by selling

Some landlords, as a consequence of this new tax law, may review selling up or paying off some of the loan, while others will wish to reorganise their arrangements. Where a landlord has a portfolio, it may make sense to sell one property and reduce the borrowings on the others.

Rent increases

Many professionals believe rents will have to rise, due to the chancellors’ tax change. There has been a substantial shift, with rents climbing faster than property prices, but now there is still further to go, particularly given that landlords have been targeted in the Budget.

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE

how can you protect your home? How can you protect your home against care home fees and future marriages? People are very worried about the issue of paying for Long Term Care. It is very easy to bury our heads in the sand with regards to this issue, as we all like to think that it will never happen to us. But everyone seems to know or have heard of people who have had to sell their home in order to pay for their care, but don’t quite know why or how they can avoid the same thing happening to themselves. We all need to plan more carefully for our future, if we wish our beneficiaries to inherit what we feel is rightfully theirs. The sad fact is that you’ve worked hard for years to provide a valuable asset to pass on to your loved ones, but your home may be under real threat if you later require long-term residential or personal care. The Community Care Act 1990 empowers Local Authorities with the responsibility of providing Long Term Care. However they will refuse to pay for many of the services they provide on a means tested basis if assets are above the current threshold of just £14,250. Families of this vulnerable sector are dis- inherited when everything their parents have ever worked for during a whole lifetime is wiped out in just a few years of long term care. In excess of 20,000 homes have to be sold each year to pay for care, that’s over 60 per day. Individuals may be tempted to give assets away to overcome this. Such action is unlikely to be successful due to the deliberate deprivation rule, whereby gifted assets are still included for means test calculations regardless of how long ago they were given away. Sadly, up to one in four women and one in six men will need formal care during their lifetime.

There are more than 500,000 people living in residential care. And with a growing population of elderly the figure is rising! It is upsetting for widows and widowers, who together had worked so hard for the family home they intended to leave to their children, suddenly losing the family home to pay £20,000-£30,000 a year care costs. But YOU can avoid this happening by organising your affairs effectively with THE PROTECTIVE PROPERTY TRUST WILL. This quite simply is designed to protect the value of the share of the deceased partner in the property, from being used to pay the care bills of the surviving partner if they require permanent residential care. It also allows the surviving partner all the benefits of occupation or to move to a different property and will prevent the deceased partner’s share in the property being inherited by a second husband or wife. Ultimately, it leaves your share of the home to pass to your loved ones in the fullness of time. If you have no hesitation in having building insurance for your family home, then you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to also protect your home against the Community Care Act 1990.

9 tips to avoid conflict this christmas Make Christmas a time of joy and celebration, not a time of stress and tension. Here are some tips to help smooth out any ruffled feathers: 1.Get it out into the open – Rather than avoid conflict altogether make time to sit down calmly or go for a walk to discuss any frustrations that may be building.

9. Avoid character attacks – finally, just because your partner leaves his or her clothes lying around the bedroom does not mean that they are “inconsiderate” or “lazy.” They may just have been rushing to get things done, to have more time with you.

2. Stop being defensive – Silence creates a bad atmosphere. Make time to talk rather than denying how you feel. 3. Avoid generalising – Don’t start sentences with “You always,” or “You never,” as in “You always leave everything to me!” Also, however tempting it may be, avoid bringing up past conflicts, this will just add fuel to the fire. 4. Forget “right” or “wrong” – Don’t assume that there is always a right and a wrong way to look at things, and that your way is the right way. Aim for compromise if you can, or agree to disagree. 5. Stop mind-reading – We may think we know what our partner is thinking, but this can lead to inaccurate interpretations of their actions. Remember, we are all unique. 6. Listen carefully – Stop interrupting, rolling your eyes and rehearsing what you are going to say next. Take time to stop and truly listen to the other person.

Remember, good communication can really improve relationships, increasing intimacy, trust and togetherness. This Christmas come together and make time for each other, even if things become a little fraught at times. Make friends, say sorry and celebrate openness and honesty. Have a good Christmas!

Steve Clifford.

Counsellor and CBT therapist www.stevecliffordcbt.com Like on Facebook: yourmentalhealthmatters

7. Stop blaming – instead of simply criticising and blaming the other person for the situation. Be prepared to back down and say sorry. 8. Stop trying to “Win” at all costs – there is a saying that goes along the lines of: “If people are focused on winning the argument, the relationship loses.”

Coping with... winter feet

With the cold dark nights, the last thing on our mind is looking after our feet. We hide them away not to be seen again until the spring. With our feet squashed into boots this can be a time when many people begin to notice problems with their feet. Taking care of your feet is essential to maintain foot health and remain pain free. Part of this care in winter is to keep them warm: 1. Shoes need to be waterproof with a thermal lining and preferably also breathable. Thermal insoles are available to insert into shoes but make sure there is enough room especially as you may be wearing extra socks. 2. Warm socks will also help. If you have sweaty feet you may need a pair that wick the moisture away. Consider two pairs of thinner socks with the wicking pair next to the skin. 3. Exercise to maintain the circulation in your feet. If you have reduced mobility then there are chair and bed exercises to keep those

joints and muscles moving. A foot massage or reflexology can also help. 4. If your feet get cold, warm them up slowly and don’t put them too close to the fire. Diabetics particularly need to take care not to burn or damage their feet. 5. Wash feet daily, making sure to dry thoroughly between the toes before putting on clean socks. Use this as a good time to check your feet for problems. 6. Apply a moisturising cream to maintain supple healthy skin. Further information on foot problems can be found at www.feetforlife.org

yes, you can eat turkey after christmas After the excesses of Christmas most of us start January with plans to lose our Christmas tummies, start exercising, eat healthily but all too soon we are mopping up the ‘left over’ chocolates, Christmas cake and those huge bags of nuts and crisps we were all convinced we ‘needed’. It’s better to look at our diet and try and fill up with something which is healthy and yet at the same time makes us feel contented. Turkey steaks are very plentiful after the Christmas period, they are cheap and low in fat and despite people claiming that it’s not as juicy as chicken if prepared properly I challenge anyone to tell the difference!

onions, a pack of beanshoots, shredded chinese lettuce, a tin of water chestnuts and thinly sliced carrots. As it cooks sprinkle with soya sauce (to taste) and a sprinkle of dried Ginger (if liked). Serve with Boiled Rice. Why not try it ? Tell the family its chicken and believe me they will enjoy every mouthful.

Enjoy! Janet Van Den Bussche. Find us on Facebook: TeaBesideTheSea

Why not try Turkey Carnitas? •

Place thickly sliced Turkey Steaks in an oven-proof dish with thinly sliced onions and peppers. Sprinkle a teaspoon of Cumin over the top of the steaks, add a teaspoon of Chilli flakes (or a fresh chilli), sprinkle of cinnamon, half a bunch of fresh coriander (chopped) and a grind of both salt and pepper. Cover the steaks with diet coke. Make a lid for the dish with silver foil wrapped tightly and place in a pre heated oven (175) and bake for two hours (open the foil and turn the steaks over after an hour before re-covering). Serve wrapped in warm Corn Tortillas, grated cheese, sour cream, guacamole and Tomato Salsa.

Another easy and tasty recipe is Turkey Stir fry simply slice Turkey steaks into strips and sizzle in olive oil in a wok with sliced

PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILATOR PADS - (PAD’s) Public Access Defibrillators (PAD’s) and Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and CPR training We are extremely lucky in Bexhill to have access to 13 Public Access Defibrillators (PAD’s) and Automated External Defibrillators (AED) machines which can potentially save lives. (If people know how to use them.)

A cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere... at any time. A person’s chance of survival falls by about 10% for each minute that passes without defibrillation. We are a local First Aid Instructor company (In Bexhill) called First Aid Direct. We are a registered training centre with Qualsafe, (Centre Number 906184) who are regulated by Ofqual. We are fully insured to run first Aid Courses. The course is a day course (people who successfully complete the course would receive a Qualsafe Awards Certificate.) You may have seen our advertising of these AED & CPR courses around the local community, in the charity shops and church halls. Every second matters and this course is designed to give confidence to act quickly and effectively. Most importantly, the course will also teach defibrillator operators how to perform effective CPR. I am running scheduled courses over the next three months. It can be a work course, a group of friends or individuals that wish to know how to perform CPR and how to use an AED

We are running AED & CPR courses which cover a range of emergency first aid to teach people how to: • Deal with a choking casualty, adult, child and baby • How to place someone in a recovery position • How to perform CPR on adults, children and babies • How to deal with a Heart and Angina attack • Heart rhythms and when someone needs a shock from an AED • How to use a AED on an adult, child and baby • Safety when using an AED • Reporting AED usage • Post traumatic stress (Following an unsuccessful resuscitation) • Survival rates of AED usage We also run other courses: First Aid At Work, Emergency First Aid, Paediatric First Aid, Emergency Paediatric First Aid.
