Good luck everyone!

Good wishes... I’d like to start off this month by wishing Scott, Verity and his family my best wishes after enduring an extremely trying month in March. I truly hope that April will bring better times for you all. So did everyone enjoy the Easter weekend? I’m sure there was a lot of chocolate eggs consumed and lots of fun at Egg hunts. We’re still getting through many of the eggs in our house! Interestingly we discovered a polish tradition, tapping painted hard boiled eggs in their shells against one another, the one which didn’t break was the winner! Great fun! It’s nice to get outdoors too in the garden as it begins to come alive isn’t it, usual care must be taken to avoid the pesky slugs! as Ian says I love tulips too... great tips to follow from our gardener Ian Ward on that. You will also see from our centre pages that the St. Michael’s Hospice Open Gardens season starts again soon too. From delicious, tasty peanut butter brownie recipes to parenting, wellbeing and finance. We have lots of interesting things to read about, take part in and go along to. We have full pages of events at the back of our magazine and more regular events and clubs to join on the events page of our website.

YOUR gardening STORIES

gardening advice for APRIL At last! After such a wet and windy winter, the long awaited Spring has finally sprung. Daffodils and blossoms are starting to bloom and as temperatures rise and rainfall lessens, the soil begins to drain and become more workable. The longer more frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. We must expect the inevitable ‘April showers’ this month but sunny albeit chilly days too. It’s an exciting month, just watch out for frosts!

Spring Cleaning

• Hoe your borders, getting rid of weeds before they take hold – annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. • Remove tired winter bedding and plants that did not survive the winter.

Planting

• Deadhead daffodils and narcissi, give them a liquid feed or sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. • Split clumps of snowdrops • Sweet peas can be sown outside this month.

Pest Watch

Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails, they love tulips!

Birds

Birds will be building their nests now in preparation for laying their eggs. Do keep putting out bird food – they quickly become accustomed to regular food supplies and it’s a real treat to see wild birds in the garden. (They can help you with your slug problem too!)

Trees, shrubs and climbers

• Plant and move evergreen shrubs, conifers and trees and remember to water them well until firmly rooted in. • Finish pruning your roses and start spraying them with fungicide. • Prune hydrangeas – do not remove stems with a bud at the top, but snip off old stems.

Lawns

Mow regularly (start with the blades high for the first couple of cuts), over seed bare patches and apply weed and moss killer. Rake out or scarify AFTER applying moss killer or you will merely be spreading moss to the rest of your lawn! Now is the ideal time to sow new lawns on well prepared ground. Enjoy your garden however large or small there is always plenty to do, if you need a hand contact us from below details. Happy gardening!

A PHOTOGRAPHERS VIEW – CHEATING?

Talk to people about photography and as a generalisation women are more interested in the aesthetics of the craft. Men prefer to discuss how big to print, and the length of lenses, it’s all about size. Don’t ask me why. An area of common ground is the use of Photoshop and similar software. It’s CHEATING and it’s not “proper” photography. Sorry, I don’t agree. They are just tools in this digital age. Many of the “tricks” can trace a direct lineage back to the days of film and the darkroom. Use a digital camera, and internal software will process the image behind the scenes. Some photographers just choose to take more control and do it themselves using, you’ve guessed it, Photoshop (or something similar). My Grandfather, a French Polisher, had a colourful turn of phrase about buffing and coprolites, (to put it politely) when up against something that was beyond even his skills. Fortunately as photographers we can ensure that our source material is the best it can be,

and then use software with the primary intention to polish an image to its full potential. We don’t have to radically change it if we choose not to. Of course software allows elements to be changed in an image with the intention to deceive, but it’s not a new phenomenon. Look no further than the cold war propaganda of the last century for examples of manipulated photographs, all done without Photoshop. If the intent is honest though, is it important how the final image is arrived at? Luckily in Bexhill-on-Sea this thorny debate about unrealistic images is academic. Wait long enough and someone will park a bus on a modernist icon anyway. Or did they?

do you lack confidence?

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES

With the promise of longer days and warmer weather are you looking forward to an exciting summer ahead? Or will you move in the same old safe and predictable circles? Does lack of confidence stop you doing things? Many people say in their comfort zone because of lack of confidence. Yet, confidence is a skill that can be learned and cultivated. In building confidence the first thing to do is ditch your inner critic. Because how you talk to yourself really impacts on confidence and self-esteem. Set yourself some goals, things you want to do, such as running in next years Hastings half marathon. Then set some smaller goals such as a daily walk, followed by a jog along Bexhill seafront, gradually increasing the distance. Instead of dwelling on your lack of confidence and doing nothing, begin by taking small steps. Think of the things you would love to do but never dared. Get into the habit of seeing positive images of yourself. Ditch the one of you staggering over the finishing line with everybody laughing, replace it with a confident smiling you running to the applaud of the crowd. Whatever your goal, from learning to Salsa dance to public speaking. Start small then build up. From a CBT perspective the key is to identify the negative thought or image that appears and then look to see if there is actual evidence that supports it. If you have never stood up and presented before, but your mental image is you as a child in class getting something wrong. Well, that was a long time ago, think of all the life experience you have now. That’s an old memory just waiting for a new positive one to take its place.

Begin by practising in front of a mirror, then in front of your family. When the day comes for your talk stop thinking about the audience as predators out to get you. Choose a friendly face and speak to them instead of the whole room. Remember, the audience wants to hear what you say and not ridicule you. Let this year be the year you moved out of your comfort zone, see yourself sitting out with a glass of wine celebrating your success and your growing confidence. Until next time,

BROWNIES... BESIDE THE SEA I love brownies and judging by the amount we sell at the tea shop I’m not the only one. They are easy to make but people often overlook them and instead of enjoying a soft and squidgy brownie they end up with a chocolate cake. I have a basic recipe which, I think, is absolutely delicious, for something a little special add your favourite additions. The 375g of chocolate which is melted should be at least 85% cocoa – personally I use green and blacks dark chocolate – the remaining 250g of chocolate pieces can be something a bit different. Toblerone makes a perfect addition when chopped into slivers and then simply replace the walnuts in my basic recipe with chopped toasted almonds. Another favourite is salted caramel and to make this I use milk chocolate for the slivers, use toasted pecan nuts and then make a simple caramel sauce use half the sauce to swirl into the mixture and then use the remainder to pour over the brownie to serve. To make a salted caramel sauce melt together 200g dark brown sugar and a small carton of double cream and 25g butter until thick and creamy, stir in several grinds of sea salt and leave aside to cool. Chocolate orange is another favourite and I find the easiest way is to use chocolate orange chocolate slivers add some grated orange peel to the mixture and a little orange juice. Or this weeks brownie which was peanut butter simply use all dark chocolate and use toasted peanuts and two large spoonfuls of peanut butter swirled into the mixture when it is in the tin. Whatever your favourite flavour go mad and experiment with different chocolates, nuts and even a little grated chilli and cinnamon.

“Keep it local” “Trustworthy and Reliable”

2016 budget summary On 16th March 2016, the Chancellor George Osborne delivered his 8th Budget. He emphasised the importance of a long-term plan and said the Government had chosen “sound public finances to deliver security”. Although critics were quick to point out that Mr Osborne had missed his target for cutting the national debt. Economic Overview The Chancellor said that the UK was on course for a Budget surplus (£10.4billion by 2019/20), the economy was growing faster than any other major Nation’s and that employment was at an all-time high. But he reiterated warnings earlier this year that the outlook for the global economy was perilous and that Britain must be aware of the gathering storm clouds. The OBR calculated growth was 2.2 per cent last year and predicts it will be two per cent this year and 2.2 per cent in 2017, although Mr Osborne clarified that their predictions were based on the UK voting to remain within the European Union. Voting to leave would cause “disruptive uncertainty” he warned. Inflation in 2016 will be just 0.7 per cent, down from the one per cent expected in November 2015. Business and Enterprise Mr Osborne said that Britain already had one of the most competitive tax regimes in the world and now he was publishing a “road map” to make business taxation fit for the future. A number of changes were announced to business rates, following a review of the current system. As of April 2017, around 600,000 small businesses will be taken out of business rates altogether, thus saving them in the region of £6,000 annually. A further 250,000 firms will benefit from a reduction in their current rates. Plans were also announced to reform stamp duty for businesses. Commercial stamp duty will have a zero rate band on purchases up to £150,000; a two per cent rate on the next £100,000; and a five per cent top rate above £250,000. A further cut to corporation tax was also confirmed, with the rate set to be reduced to 17 per cent by 2020. The Chancellor confirmed an increase in Insurance Premium Tax – which will rise 0.5 per cent to 10 per cent. There was also bad news for the drinks industry, with a sugar tax to take effect in two years’ time. The levy is expected to raise £520million. Pure fruit juices and milk-based drinks, as well as small producers, will not be affected by the levy. Following recommenda-

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

tions from the Low Pay Commission, the Government will increase the National Minimum Wage rates from October 2016. Personal tax The personal allowance will increase to £11,500 from April 2017. At the same time the 40 per cent higher rate threshold will also rise to £45,000. In addition there was the announcement that Capital Gains Tax (CGT) will be cut from 28 per cent to 20 per cent and from 18 per cent to 10 per cent for basic-rate taxpayers. Mr Osborne also announced that he would abolish Class 2 National Insurance (NI) contributions for the self-employed from 2018. Fuel duty tax has been frozen for the sixth year running. Duty on beer, cider and spirits will be frozen, while tax on other alcohol is to rise in line with inflation. Pensions and savings Ahead of the Budget, Mr Osborne had been forced to abandon some of his more radical changes to pension rules. There was nonetheless an announcement which will enable under-40s to open lifetime ISAs. Under this arrangement, for every £4 a person saves, the Government will give them £1 up until the age of 50. This money can be used to save for a pension – the Chancellor acknowledged that many younger people are struggling to save for retirement – or to buy a home (people will have the option to roll help-to-buy ISAs into the scheme). In addition, the annual ISA limit will rise to £20,000 from next year. Tax avoidance and aggressive tax planning The Chancellor announced a series of measures to crack down on tax avoidance and evasion which will total £12billion. These include bringing an end to the use of “personal service companies” by employees in the public sector who are looking to minimise their liabilities. The Chancellor also said that many firms feel they face unfair competition from online retailers, some of which do not pay VAT. In an effort to address their grievances, Mr Osborne announced he would be closing a loophole used by some overseas internet companies.

ST. MARY’S & sustrans “bike it day” Before the Easter break, St Mary’s school and 6th form college in Wrestwood Road, Bexhill enjoyed a “Bike It” day. Lucy and Ruth from Sustrans visited the school with bicycles and every pupil and student was given the opportunity to ride a cycle around the playground. Staff also bought their bikes in to join in with the fun. Lucy also brought along specially adapted bicycles so that pupils who have mobility problems were able to take part in the event. The weather was very kind to us and everyone enjoyed the day. Lucy and Ruth will be returning to St Mary’s in the near future with a mechanic who will show the children how to maintain and repair their bicycles. Sustrans is working with schools in East Sussex to provide students with the skills and information necessary to allow them to ride a bike on a regular basis.

for children and young people aged 7-19 who have severe speech, language and/or communication difficulties. Almost without exception our children and young people also have complex needs which may include medical issues, learning difficulties and physical disabilities. Our staff at St Mary’s are dedicated and highly skilled professionals that work together to provide first class education, a comprehensive range of therapy, and the highest levels of nursing and care all provided in a supportive environment. We help our pupils realise their optimum potential in every aspect of their lives through providing individually tailored curriculum based education and care in a nurturing environment, and giving opportunities to practise and develop independence and life skills in both formal and informal environments.

St Mary’s School and College (part of The Talking Trust) is a children’s charity and as such receives no grants or donations from Local Government . It receives some funding from Central Government. Parents do not normally pay fees for their child to attend St Mary’s. Local Authorities who cannot meet the needs of a child will refer that child to St Mary’s, and if, after assessment, the child would be appropriately placed the Local Authority will then pay the additional fee. These fees cover the child’s education and care. Everything else is covered by fundraising. St Mary’s was founded in 1922 as a special school for disabled children by medical professionals who wanted to provide the best possible start for young people who then had few opportunities to access education with support. It has continued this ethos in the work of The Talking Trust. We are a leading registered charity who provide nonmaintained residential education and therapy

COPING WITH…. stress and getting fit that other kinds of exercise may not. Early circle dances were gathered from European folkdance, but since they began to spread throughout the UK in the Seventies, many new dances have been created to classical and contemporary music. Dances are taught every time, so newcomers to groups do not need to feel left behind. There is no audience to make dancers feel self-conscious, and no partners are needed. Everyone is welcome, and each newcomer feels the strength of the community as the group grows, and also feels the joy of moving in harmony with others.

For more years than she cares to remember, Pauline Thompson has been going round in circles – and she has never felt better! Pauline, as a leader of circle dance groups and workshops, regularly encourages other folk to follow in her footsteps and feel the benefit from head to toe. She has been teaching her brand of musical well-being in East Sussex since 1988, and strongly believes that dancing in the round with others leads to better health and a less stressful life. The benefits of community dancing to people’s health and well-being are well recognised, but Pauline feels that Circle Dancing goes a step further. The simple dances, both ancient and modern, offer a wide-ranging choice for people with all kinds of musical tastes. Experiencing the spirit of the dance can reach the parts of us

Dances can be lively and energetic, or gentle and reflective. Pauline likes to start slowly to warm up the muscles, then adds dances from all over the world to suit the mood and the ability of the group, before moving into slower more meditative pieces, ending with a restorative moment of silence.

PARENTING ADVICE LOCAL CHARITIES

Knowing and Responding to my Children’s Development Over the last few months, we have looked at many stages of development for our children, and how to best help them accomplish what is important at each stage: to find practical ways to show unconditional love and acceptance, according to what they really need. Let’s take a look at this from the very beginning.

Who Do You Trust?

(Infancy: New-born to 18 months) We used to believe that newborns just needed to be held, fed, burped, changed, put to bed, but we have now discovered that babies are learning all sorts of basic lessons. As Baby’s needs are met or unmet, the question is answered “Can relationships be trusted?” It is not a matter of whether they will learn about trust, but what they will learn. There is no more crucial lesson for growing up than learning to trust – it affects all our relationships! So how can we help... • T alk in ‘baby-talk’ – they really do best respond to a high pitched tone of voice! • Provide changes of scenery – they love the variety of sensory experience • Gently tickle your infant, nuzzle your head on their tummy, make some funny/different noises • Give lots of eye contact.

Learning to Balance the Toddler (Walking – 36 months)

“How long do I stay attached to these adults,

depending on them for everything/when do I let go, and begin to be responsible and make my own choices?” Achieving this balance is a lifelong business, but it begins in earnest at this age. The day a child takes its first step, a whole new horizon opens up, and dependency and life is changed forever. Exasperating at times, but normal, its a push and pull between holding on and letting go. Parents help balance this process by providing limits and controlling the consequences of the toddler’s choices. “I’m not going to let you run into the street/ I’m not going to let you throw a ten minute temper tantrum. But neither am I going to put you in a playpen with a packet of breadsticks and expect you to be quiet all day – I’m committed to doing whatever is best for you” This might look like: • Child-proofing the home – removing or fencing off hazards • Being consistent – what’s not OK now, is not OK tomorrow either • Ignoring or giving no attention to temper tantrums – when the storm subsides, resume your activity together (when in public it might mean retreating to the car/loo/side of pavement) • Saying “I love you” after a tantrum or power struggle. • A sense of humour is essential – for fun, why not get together with a friend and share your worst nappy-changing experience or your most embarrassing toddler moment?
