Photo Competition! Would you like to see YOUR photo on next month’s cover?

Congratulations to: Judith Lawrence! You are our first front cover winner of the year, for January 2016. Thank you for sending in your calming seascape. Thanks to everyone for sending in their photos, they are much appreciated. If you’d like to enter into next month’s competition then email: samantha@bexhillianmag.co.uk on or before 26th January 2016 please; this is our deadline. Also ensure that you own the photo entered. 6000 Readers will see it, it’ll appear on our website and it’ll be shared in social media.

Good luck everyone!

Happy New Year! Now that we’re looking ahead into a New Year, you may want to take advantage of our stories inside this month’s issue. Maybe, self improvement and self esteem, to feel more positive? Or try the natural face lift, how about it? It all sounds intriguing to me, (she says with fresh looking photo, which in truth needs updating!) I’ve read Steve Clifford’s 10 tips to feeling good about yourself and I think they’re really uplifting as always, so thanks Steve. I must say that fishcake recipe looks delicious as well and as Janet explains, you can use whichever fish combo you want, I am guilty of buying shop bought ones for quickness, so I’m going to give this a go but with mackerel. Let me know how you get on out there please? As Ian, our resident gardening expert says, it’s still a bit too cold and wet for too much garden maintenance, but remember to keep the bird tables topped up. My Mum likes keeping her table topped up with nuts for the squirrels, she has a recognisable, frequent little visitor now! Don’t forget to have a look at what’s going on locally at the back of the magazine and our events page on our website. Let’s hope that 2016 brings us all hope and happier times.

MAKING FISHCAKES Many people enjoy fishcakes but most end up picking up a pack of ready made ones rather than making their own. However, making your own fishcakes is simple and easy to do and uses many store cupboard ingredients. First and foremost you need to prepare mashed potato and leave to cool whilst you decide which fish and flavours you would like to use. Salmon is a firm favourite with many people (including children) served with either a cream sauce or even just a simple bottled mayonnaise. Any fish (smoked or non smoked or indeed crab or prawns) can be used (simply replace the salmon with your chosen fish), if you do not like the capers in the recipe again you can replace them with your fresh herbs. For example if you enjoy Thai fishcakes then lemon grass, Chilli, coriander, spring onions and replace the mustard with fish sauce and voila a different dinner again! and serve with chilli sauce. Once you have chosen your fish (do not cook crab nor prawns – chop these) place it in a bowl with a spoon of water cover with cling film and poach in the microwave for 3 minutes on high heat. Remove the cling film and leave to one side to cool. Stir the mustard, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste, crumble in chunks of your chosen fish, crab or prawns and mix well add two beaten eggs. Shape large spoonfuls into fishcake shapes. Roll in beaten egg and flour (Gluten free flour can be used). Shallow fry in olive oil until brown and crispy then place on an oven proof dish in an oven at 180 for 10 minutes. Make your sauce by adding all ingredients to a shallow pan and cooking over a gentle

heat until thick and creamy. Serve the fishcakes on a bed of spinach topped with the sauce and a large wedge of lemon.

YOUR gardening STORIES

gardening advice for JANUARY With the warm glow of Christmas truly behind us and the tree nestling on top of the compost heap, many would think it is the seemingly distant call of Spring that allows us back in to the garden. However there are still a lot of important jobs to be done this month to see our efforts out in the cold, flourish later in the year. Pruning fruit trees are a great example of this and I have detailed the basics below.

Fruit Tree Pruning

When attempting to prune trees remember safety first, ladders, saws, loppers and secateurs all pose a much greater risk when at height. •

THE AIM: is to create an open goblet shape with a framework of 4 to 5 main branches. They will most likely not resemble ones in gardening magazines after you have finished, (unfortunately). Apple and pear trees trained as free standing bushes are best pruned every winter to produce a good cycle of fruiting wood. Trees that are not, become less productive and congested with old and decaying wood.

PRUNING: start simply by removing any crossing, rubbing, weak, and dead or damaged wood. • Aim to take out 10 to 20% off of the overall canopy in any one winter and work around evenly. • Shorten the previous year’s growth on each main branch by about a third back to a bud facing in the desired direction. • Open the centre of the tree by removing larger branches at the point of origin. • Pruning is not a 5 minute job and if it has not been done for years then spread it out over the next couple of months.

AVOID GIVING IT A HAIRCUT! I know this is tempting but resist, this will only stimulate rapid unproductive new growth that you will become unsatisfied with and end up chopping off every year.

Lawns

With 2015 being the warmest recorded year bringing mild and wet conditions through the Winter, the grass has kept growing whilst being near impossible to cut due to the sodden ground. Let’s hope we get some cold weather this month to halt the growth!

Gardening maintenance jobs • • • • •

Keep lawn damage limitation to a minimum by staying off, especially if it is frosty. Keep the bird table topped up with food and water. Ventilate the greenhouse on dry sunny days. Sow sweet peas under cover to get a head start. Start cutting back grasses and other perennials for Winter interest.

Too cold or wet to go out start planning for Spring it will soon be here!

A PHOTOGRAPHERS VIEW – TIME

Ask most people “what is the time?” and they’ll look at their watch and tell you. Ask a photographer and they’ll probably mutter “1/125th second” while squinting through the viewfinder of their camera. Like an eighties middle of the road tribute band, 1/125th second is the most inoffensive of time values in photography. Fast enough to capture movement, but not so slow as to introduce camera shake on all but the most non-standard of lenses. It’s a useful starting point, but staying in the 1/125th second Goldilocks zone would be closing the door on one of the most creative aspects of photography; to be able to visually capture the passage of time in a single frame. With longer exposures, waterfalls become cascading milky strands, and beach tides are transformed into a dense swirling muslin mist. A moving object can be blurred, to stand out against a static environment, or instead, that same subject can be frozen against a blurred background. Within those seconds, time is relative.

photography YOUR STORIES

As a starting point, set your camera to 1/15th second, which is fast enough to capture a moving subject so that it is recognisable, but will introduce a sense of motion. An ordinary scene of people walking along the Bexhill Promenade will be enhanced by introducing movement. With longer exposures, (use a tripod), moving subjects will become increasingly ghostlike. A technique favoured by motorsports photographers; “panning”, can freeze a hurtling object against an impressionistic backdrop. Just keep the moving subject in the camera viewfinder during the exposure. Digital cameras are a gift for photographic exploration, as each image contains the technical information for future reference, (it certainly beats a notepad and blunt pencil). Keep practicing and results will follow.

All it takes is a little time.

what is self-esteem? Welcome January 2016. The dawn of a New Year brings with it the possibility an exciting new start. It’s a time to think about making changes. I’m not talking about going on a diet, taking up exercise or other short term fix. I am talking about change at a more fundamental level – that of improving your self-esteem.

What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem is the way that you think about yourself. If your self-esteem is low, the thoughts you have about yourself are likely to be negative and you are likely to focus on what you think are your weaknesses.

HEALTH YOUR & WELLBEING STORIES

8. Make a list of your past successes, however small, like learning to ride a bicycle or playing a musical instrument. Write these down. 9. Try to do more of the things you love, rather than the things you think you ought to do. 10. Finally, be true to yourself. Respect yourself, live your life, not a life dictated to you by others.

Begin to make these positive changes today - Good luck.

Having low self-esteem can affect every area of life including work, personal relationships and your ability to socialise. Tackling low self-esteem and boosting positive thinking can really improve your sense of wellbeing and your mental health. Here are a few tips you might find helpful. 1. Stop comparing yourself to others. You will nearly always home in on their strengths and that will make you feel worse about yourself. 2. Stop putting yourself down. Every time you that it will erode your self-esteem. 3. Listen out for compliments, learn to accept them and say “thank you.” 4. Find an affirmation, a statement such as, “I am confident and competent,” write it down and read it every day. 5. Read everything you can about selfesteem, devour books, blogs, websites, etc, and make improving your self-esteem your mission in life. 6. Avoid people who are negative and put you down, instead mix with people who are positive, confident and supportive. 7. What do you like about yourself, however small? Kindness, friendliness, reliability, etc. note these down.

Until next time

BEXHILLIAN MONEY MATTERS

EXTRA PENSION TAX RELIEF IS AVAILABLE NOW The recent Budget contained good news for pension investors. The amount of tax relief that can be received on pension contributions has just increased for some.

What is pension tax relief?

To encourage everyone to save for retirement, some pension contributions receive up to 45% tax relief: The government automatically pays 20% of your contributions, regardless of your tax rate and higher and top-rate taxpayers can reclaim more through their tax return, up to an extra 20% or 25% depending on individual circumstances. Imagine you pay £8,000 into your pension, the government will add £2,000 to make it £10,000 in your pension. A higher-rate taxpayer can reclaim up to a further £2,000 and a top-rate taxpayer up to a further £2,500. £10,000 in a pension can in effect cost as little as £5,500. To receive the full 40% or 45% tax relief you must pay enough tax at that rate.

Who can now receive more pension tax relief?

A £40,000 maximum annual allowance untaxed usually applies to pension contributions each tax year, from all sources into your pension pot. Contributions over this allowance effectively do not receive tax relief. In the budget, a new £40,000 allowance was introduced for contributions made from 9 July 2015 to 5 April 2016. This means anyone who made contributions from 6 April 2015 to 8 July 2015 might be able to invest more this tax year as they have the £40k allowance starting again from 8th July 2015 and receive more tax relief. Anyone who hasn’t made contributions still has the same allowance – £40,000 for contributions up to 5 April 2016. Contributions registered from 6 April 2015 to 8 July 2015 will reduce this new allowance, but only if they exceeded £40,000. Pension contributions made in the previous tax year could also count; your provider should be

able to inform you. How this works is explained in the table below.

Qualifying for extra tax relief

To receive tax relief, the total value of your contributions this tax year should not exceed your earnings. For instance, to contribute £60,000 in total this tax year you should earn at least £60,000. If you wanted to invest more than your earnings in any tax year, you could ask your employer to make an employer contribution, possibly set off against future earnings. If you decide to use your new allowance, remember money in a pension can normally only be accessed from age 55, rising to 57 from 2028, usually 25% of this pension pot is tax free and the rest taxed as income. Tax rules can change in the future. Contributions from 6 April 2015 to 8 July 2015

£0 £15,000 £40,000 £60,000* £100,000*

Allowance from 9 July 2015 to 5 April 2016

£40,000 £40,000 £40,000 £20,000 £0

*Anything over £40,000 registered in this period uses up the new £40,000 allowance.

ST. MARY’S SCHOOL BEXHILL

LOCAL NEWS LOCAL CHARITIES

St Mary’s children write their own pantomime… …. Oh no they didn’t, oh yes they did!! Pupils at St Mary’s school and 6th form college in Wrestwood Road Bexhill, wrote, produced and starred in their own Pantomime this year. During the first term up to October the pupils learnt about the traditions of pantomime. They considered and improvised such ideas as the pantomime cow, goodies and baddies and booing and hissing.

The pupils learnt and rehearsed their part in lessons and came together for the dress rehearsal which was attended by people who have supported St Mary’s throughout the year. The actual show was performed on the last day of term in front of the whole school, staff and parents. (Pictures are of – Mrs Amey as Fairy Bauble and two characters from the Peter Pan scene.)

Everyone at St Mary’s would like to wish you a Happy New Year.

Wendy Maylam They decided to produce Jack and the Christmas School Beanstalk. The story is of a Christmas school that has a special job of growing the Christmas beans only for them to be stolen on Christmas Eve. The audience then had to help the cast find the beans and save Christmas. Needless to say the beans were found and everyone lived happily ever after. The show was rounded off by everyone singing We wish you a Merry Christmas. Each of the classes in school did their own scene which included appearances by Peter Pan, a beautiful pantomime dame, an angry crocodile, a pantomime cow and of course Jac the heroine of the story. The pantomime was narrated by class teacher Mrs Amey as Fairy Bauble.

BEXHILLIAN – YOUR LOCAL FUTURECHARITIES FINANCE

Are you getting caught by inheritance tax net? Inheritance Tax (IHT) can appear to be someone else’s problem – an issue only for the very wealthy. However, while it may appear to be a rich person’s tax, once the value of someone’s house, investments, savings and articles of value such as jewellery or antiques is added up, the potential reach of IHT extends to many. The idea that it’s just an issue for the wealthy might be understandable given that the most upto-date HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) figures available show that approx. 3.1% of all deaths in 2012-2013 led to an IHT charge, a figure comparable with previous years. But the figure is rising. In 2009-2010, 14,723 estates were liable for the tax, 2010-2011 15,584 were , by 2011-2012, the figure was 15,976 and 2012-2013 17,917, were caught in the IHT net. The amount raised is also increasing, from £2.7 billion in 2010-2011 to £2.9 billion the following year and £3.1 billion in 2012-2013. While it is not possible precisely to judge what has happened since then, it seems certain these numbers will have risen further still, especially when rising house prices are taken into account.

Inheritance Tax planning

Without the existence of widespread proper IHT planning, the numbers dragged into the IHT net would be higher still. This is coming into sharper focus for more and more people thanks to rising property prices.

According to HMRC: “Residential property makes up approximately a third of the total value of taxpaying estates and the ongoing rise in property prices has contributed to a rise in the overall tax take. “At the same time, as the average value of estates rises, an increasing number… will now be valued over the IHT threshold (or nil-rate band) which has been frozen at £325,000 since April 2009.”

House price rises bring more into tax threshold

More than that, the current government intends to keep the rate frozen until 2016/2017. Meanwhile, the rate of house- price increases is picking up speed. According to statistics from the Land Registry, the average house price rose by 4.2 per cent in the year to August 2015, With the average house price standing at £184,862. There were regional variations but the direction was the same – upwards. So the stage is set for “fiscal drag”, also known as “bracket creep”, as house-price inflation potentially pulls more and more estates into the IHT net.
