THE VANCOUVER HARBOUR LIGHT PROJECT

Transforming a community, one person at a time On the Downtown Eastside, we have had a vital presence for over 65 years. Through six decades, our Vancouver Harbour Light facility has grown to a four-building campus with buildings on both sides of E. Cordova Street. The facility currently feeds and shelters more people than any non-governmental organization in British Columbia. We also provide a comprehensive continuum-of-care model that wraps services around people at every point in their lives: the programs and services offered include community meals, addiction treatment, vocational training, educational classes, counselling, and emergency and transitional housing.

“The ongoing opioid crisis, a shortage of affordable housing, and an increase in cost of living has created an explosion in the demand for programs and services, one we cannot currently meet.” The buildings are of varying ages, dating back to the 1920s. They have become physically and functionally obsolete, expensive to maintain, and do not meet the needs of our current and future client base… or the community. Amazing work happens every day at Vancouver Harbour Light, but the buildings of the campus can no longer continue to meet the growing demands in the community or province. As a result, over the next three years, we are undertaking the single largest capital project in our history, as we construct a brand-new Vancouver Harbour Light. The nine-storey, 150,000 sq. ft. facility will be purpose-built, allowing us to address three of our biggest challenges: homelessness, mental health, and the opioid crisis, which is taking the lives of thousands and destroying families across our province. With the creation of a new facility, we can achieve our vision for a modern place of hope and healing. The facility will replace our four aging buildings and consolidate all our programs and services under one roof. New programs will be created, current programs will be enhanced, accessibility will be improved, and our capacity will be increased. Special attention has been given to women’s programs and services, accessibility and mobility, and cultural inclusion, especially in relation to our Indigenous populations.
