MESSAGE FROM THE DIVISIONAL COMMANDER

The Salvation Army in British Columbia is an exciting place to be these days. In over 50 communities, we strive to live out our mission serving the people of this beautiful province. Thanks to our amazing staff and volunteers, we’re able to continue to meet the needs of people in so many ways.

The ever-increasing cost of living means that there is an evergrowing demand for our services and our ministry. We are continuing to look for opportunities to reach out, including with other partners, and find ways to come alongside friends at their point of need. Our services include shelters, addiction treatment, community food security programs, community meals, longterm care and assisted living for seniors, day care and tutoring for children, spiritual care services, churches, emergency disaster response, and more.

In this report, you’ll see some exciting stories that feature current ministries that are taking place here in British Columbia.

I hope you’ll take the time to read these stories and be inspired by the great work that our staff are doing daily. I’m continually inspired by the stories of transformation that are happening in people’s lives. We’re blessed and humbled to be able to journey with others in these paths of transformation.

We’re excited to have completed several building renovation projects – Prince Rupert, Trail, Kamloops, and Fort St. John – which will allow us to serve better. We’re looking forward to ongoing and new projects – Vancouver Harbour Light, Comox Valley, Nanaimo New Hope Centre, Boundless Vancouver (Mt. Pleasant), and Gitwinksihlkw (Nisga’a Nation). We want our facilities to be places of dignity as well as service. As well as building projects, we also have numerous innovation projects taking place which will allow us to find new ways of serving others. Thanks for allowing us to share some of these project stories with you.

We’re so grateful for the support and partnership of so many groups and individuals as we continue to do our part in helping others. Thank you for your kind and generous support.

Salvation Army Holiday Camp Helps Participants Develop Social and Outdoor Skills When Michelle Khoury saw an advertisement for Salvation Army summer camps in B.C., she decided to ask her son Francis, 8, if he wanted to join.

Francis excitedly agreed.

Since enrolling, Michelle has noticed that the activities at Camp Sunrise have helped her son gain confidence, as well as a few other skills.

“My son has ADHD and mild autism. When he came back from camp last year, he was a different kid, in a good way. He was very confident in himself. His hand-eye coordination also improved,” Michelle shared.

The social aspect of camp is what Michelle likes the most. As she considers herself a homebody, she felt that Francis maybe hadn’t had the chance to socialize much with other children outside of school. Since he began attending camp, Francis has built some nice friendships along the way.

“The social aspect of camp really helped my son out. He made really good friends and some of them went with him again this year,” Michelle added.

The current summer program Francis is enrolled in is Camp Sunrise’s Holiday Camp. This camp is a week long and is open to children between the ages of 7 and 12. At this camp, participants take part in a variety of outdoor activities. Since Francis joined

Holiday Camp, the Khoury family has become more involved with The Salvation Army. They now attend church services weekly, while Francis attends a children’s program that teaches participants about Jesus. In addition, Francis is also enrolled in Music Camp.

Aside from the developmental benefits, Michelle also admits the affordability of the program can be very helpful for families.

“If it wasn’t for The Salvation Army camp, considering the cost of how much summer camps cost now, he’d probably be home all summer long. Salvation Army camps offer financial support too. If a parent needs a bit of financial support, they can help cover some of the costs, so it doesn’t become a financial burden, and not all camps do that,” Michelle said.

Looking forward, Michelle expects Francis to continue coming back to camp every summer, and perhaps even become a cabin leader in his late teens.

“I’m grateful he’s had the opportunity to go and try new things.

Extremely grateful,” Michelle said.

“The social aspect of camp really helped my son out. I’m grateful he’s had the opportunity to go and try new things. Extremely grateful.”

Why I Give In every community, there are individuals whose generosity towards The Salvation Army positively impacts the lives of people going through hardship.

The reasons why they donate may be different, but it usually stems from an impactful experience that led them to choose The Salvation Army.

Elda Egan donates to The Salvation Army because she is thankful for the support they gave to her son Luke. In previous years, Luke who was struggling with severe mental illness, started going to The Salvation Army food bank in Prince George, B.C. According to Elda, this not only helped Luke ensure his food security, but it also provided him with a safe space that he enjoyed.

“He felt very supported by The Salvation Army, and they knew him by name. I started to support The Salvation Army because it was my way of giving back to the group that was helping my son,” Elda shared.

In October 2022, Luke unfortunately passed away. Elda has continued to provide a monthly donation to the food bank that helped her son as a thank-you for their help and acceptance.

For other donors, the inspiration behind their support has come from a single event that marked them. On November 29, 1963, a tragedy occurred that changed the life of George Stevens. On this day, Trans-Canada Air Lines (now Air Canada) Flight 831 from Montréal to Toronto crashed shortly after take-off. All 118 people on board were killed including George’s brother, who was returning from a business trip.

After hearing on the news that the flight had gone missing, George rushed to the airport in Toronto to find his sister-in-law.

When he arrived, there was chaos, George and his sister-in-law were led into a private room along with another 45 worried people who were anxiously waiting for news on their loved ones.

When George entered the room, he noticed that members of The Salvation Army were already trying to comfort people.

“This was all within 20 minutes after the news announcement of the missing plane, so I just have no idea how they got there so quickly. It made a terrific impact on me,” George said.

What he witnessed that day inspired George to make annual donations to The Salvation Army. George trusts the Army to allocate the funds where they are most needed.

“What amazed me was that going around offering tea, coffee, and words of sympathy were members of The Salvation Army.”

Sometimes, the reasons for donating can be generational as well. Lorna Court is a committed donor of The Salvation Army’s Harbour Light in Vancouver. When she was young, she remembers that her mother would donate to The Salvation Army, as they helped her mother’s cousin Pat, when he battled with alcohol addiction. Lorna believes Harbour Light was responsible for turning cousin Pat’s life around. Shortly after her mother passed away, Lorna decided she would continue donating to Harbour Light just as her mother would.

Lorna has been a donor for many years and is currently helping the Harbour Light Capital Campaign with a three-year enhanced commitment. She has also supplied the Education Centre at Harbour Light with hundreds of books and has a bequest listed for The Salvation Army in her will.

“It’s an honour to be even a microscopic part of the work The Salvation Army does. It just makes me so proud to be able to help with the wonderful work they do. To be even a cog in the wheel is so powerful,” Lorna said.

These donors and countless others continue to give hope to clients who are currently struggling in different ways.

Chef and The Salvation Army Unite to Feed Community Affected by Wildfires When wildfires began in western Canada, The Salvation Army joined together with various partners to help provide food and hydration to evacuees and firefighters. In Kelowna, B.C., one chef and his team have made it a mission to ensure residents, evacuees, and front-line workers didn’t go hungry.

Chef Adam Relvas and his wife Lindsay are the owners of Relvas Catering. Together with their team, they partnered with The Salvation Army to provide meals for seniors unable to leave their homes due to the dangerous smoke hovering over Kelowna.

“Once the fires started, we knew that we needed to do something to help out. We talked with our contacts from The Salvation Army, and they wanted to do something as well to help so that the seniors didn’t have to go out into the smoke,” Adam said.

While the Relvas team prepared meals, The Salvation Army reached out to seniors in the community who may need food assistance. Once the meals were ready, the Army delivered the food to the homes of those in need.

Partnerships between The Salvation Army and Relvas Catering have been frequent in the last few years. Especially when it comes to providing food for seniors.

“During COVID, we started teaming up with The Salvation Army to provide meals to seniors. And so we’ve had the relationship with them for the last few years,” Adam added.

Since the collaborations with the Army began, Adam says

his team has prepared over 10,000 meals for seniors in the community.

During the wildfires, the Relvas team also provided meals for anyone on the front line, as well as for people who have been forced to evacuate their homes. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the team worked hard preparing food for all the organizations they are helping, including The Salvation Army.

When they started their catering company, Adam and Lindsay made it a priority to always help the community when there is a need. This sentiment comes from a personal experience that left a mark on their lives.

“We’ve been big advocates for giving back to our community for as long as we’ve had a business. We started our own business about seven years ago and six weeks after we started, our son was diagnosed with cancer. As we went through that journey with him, our community stepped up to help and support us,” Adam shared.

“We were adamant that through all of that, we would do anything and everything that we could to give back to our community whenever we possibly could.”

Since the wildfires began, The Salvation Army’s emergency disaster services have provided over 27,000 meals, 42,000 drinks, and over 34,000 snacks to residents affected by the fires, as well as to first responders. Contributions to the Army’s relief campaign help ensure that everyone involved has access to food and basic necessities.

Former Salvation Army Shelter Resident Finds a Second Chance at Life Overcoming addiction was the first step Kazumi Shimabukuro took to change his life.

After being in and out of recovery and on the streets for some time, Kazumi joined a rehabilitation program. After completing the program, he was set up with transitional housing offered by The Salvation Army’s Belkin House in Vancouver. A place that Kazumi credits with helping to put him on the right path.

“I remember the exact date I arrived, it was December 19, 2021,” Kazumi recalls. “If it weren’t for Belkin House, I would be on the streets again or dead. Or maybe even clean but totally unhappy.”

During his stay at the Belkin House, Kazumi met a couple of staff members with whom he would build trust. With Jenea and Andy’s help, Kazumi took huge leaps in his journey to improve his life.

Jenea helped Kazumi find himself by encouraging him to do some reflection and work at his own pace, while Andy helped him find an apartment and explore his relationship with God. “I was getting curious about my spirituality and because I am gay, I didn’t think there was room for me in this religious community. Andy really helped me work through many barriers that I had around that.

“Jenea and Andy truly saw beauty and ability in me and kept pointing it out until I could see it myself. They supported me in every endeavour I had and celebrated everything with me, no matter how small. They truly do care a lot and want the best for everyone with nothing in return,” Kazumi said.

Since leaving Belkin House on January 1, 2023, Kazumi’s life looks a lot different than when he first arrived. He has been

working at a coffee shop for over a year and is now enrolled in a Psychiatric Nursing program.

Kazumi decided to go into psychiatry because he wants to help patients struggling with mental health feel like they are not alone.

“I want to make sure they know that they are safe and that they are going to be okay,” he said.

Kazumi recently revealed he had passed his first semester of college.

Despite no longer residing at Belkin House, Kazumi still meets Andy a couple times a month to check in.

“The Salvation Army is so invested in me changing my life even after leaving Belkin house. They really care about the people that go through their doors,” Kazumi said.

With things getting back on track, Kazumi now has some personal goals he wants to achieve. He wants to finish school and, down the line, hopes to travel. Being in a better place now, he also hopes to keep rebuilding his relationship with his mom.

“Thank you for the places that you have available, and for finding people like Jenea, Andy and their team that work there. Thank you for my second chance at life. Thank you for getting me to a place where my mom can say she’s proud of me. Thank you for showing me I deserve a good life and it is possible,” Kazumi wrote in a message to The Salvation Army.

HOUSTON Kirsten from Houston, B.C. shared what the support of the local programs and services mean to her.

“It’s always good food. I don’t know where I would be without you guys.

I would be dead… you guys are like family to me and my husband.”

WEST KELOWNA Sheila lives with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and relies on The Salvation Army to help provide five nutritious meals delivered to her weekly. In addition to the meals, she also comments on how enjoyable the visits are with caseworkers who call to arrange the meal delivery and stop for a visit when dropping them off.

“This program is a great benefit to my health and my social life.”

PORT ALBERNI Jesse has been fighting addiction and experiencing homelessness in Port Alberni for the last two years. Their family lived in a trailer and received meals from The Salvation Army’s Community Response Unit vehicle every night.

“I just want to say thank you to The Salvation Army for all that they do for our community and that without their services people would go hungry and literally be homeless.”
