From the Head of Centre

City Skills, part of Salford City College Group, is proud of its longstanding commitment to supporting young people in the local community and beyond.

We provide excellent learning opportunities, delivered by some of the very best teachers in the country. All of our teaching staff are experts in their subject areas, have substantial industry experience and are passionate about supporting each and every student to flourish and exceed expectations.

City Skills has a well-established reputation for equipping students with the skills that they need to be successful and our extensive links with industry provide the opportunity for our students to not only achieve whilst at college, but also go on to be successful in their chosen field.

We are committed to supporting students in their next steps. Our pastoral and careers teams work with students at the college to facilitate pathways to apprenticeships, Higher Education and into employment.

We also recognise that it is important for our students to feel safe and welcomed at the college. Our teaching staff are kind, committed and want the very best for their students.

In addition to the development and acquisition of skills and knowledge, students are allocated a personal tutor who will support them across the year. They will also be supported to develop their English and mathematics skills, independent thinking, study skills and resilience. We also have a dedicated pastoral support team who work with students on an individual basis, to remove barriers and support students in the best possible way.

Study Spaces

For students who are wanting a quiet space to study and or complete coursework, City Skills has a stateof-the-art Digital Learning Zone (DLZ) which is open to all students during break time and study days.

Student Ambassadors

Any student can become an ambassador and get involved in college events such as open days, enrolment, and enrichment activities.

The College has its own Volunteer Task Force Group which is made up of environmentally conscious students who work to ensure the local community is kept clean and tidy.

Alternatively, students interested in sports can volunteer to work with Salford Community Leisure or Manchester Football Association.

The College works with a number of charities where students can volunteer and help support these worthwhile causes during their time with us.

BRICKWORK

If you’re considering a career as a bricklayer and are ready to start developing your skills, then this is the perfect course for you.

You’ll cover a wide range of areas including learning how to interpret working drawings in order to set out masonry structures, how to produce thin joint masonry and masonry cladding, as well as how to build both solid and cavity walling.

What will I study on this course?

Level 1: Safe working practices, brick and block laying skills.

Level 2: Cavity and solid wall construction, quantities and piers.

CARPENTRY & JOINERY

Considering a career in carpentry and joinery? Our course addresses the shortage of skilled joiners in the construction industry by providing practical training. Spend up to three days per week in our specialized workshop, gaining hands-on experience. You’ll learn essential construction practices, woodworking techniques, and how to use portable power tools. No prior experience is required to enrol in this carpentry and joinery program

What will I study on this course?

Level 1: Basic woodworking joints, hand tools, health and safety, power tools safety and communication.

Level 2: First fix operations, door frames, door linings and second fix operations.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

(Including Building Services Electrotechnical T-Level)

Are you interested in learning more about building and maintaining electrical installations in structures? If so, this course is the ideal starting point to begin your journey. Units will include electrical science, electrical installations technology, installation of wiring systems, solar photovoltaic, micro-renewable energies and communication within the building services and engineering industry.

What will I study on this course?

Level 1: Health and safety, electrical science, wiring systems and communication in building services.

Level 2: Electrical science, electrical installations, electrical technology, environmental and communication in construction.

T-Level: Electrical design, test and commission of electrical installations, electrical science and principles and diagnostics and repair of electrical faults.

What are the entry requirements?

LEVEL 1 Electrical Installation Diploma (1 YEAR) English and Maths GCSE grade 4

GROUNDWORKS

If you are considering a career as a groundworker and are ready to start developing your skills, then this is the perfect course for you. The course will provide a variety of skills and techniques around brickwork, blockwork, block paving and general maintenance, with a focus on health, safety and welfare in the construction industry.

MOTOR VEHICLE

Students passionate about engines will thrive in our new, fully-equipped motor vehicle workshop. Our stateof-the-art garage features industrystandard equipment like a four-poster ramp, brake testing, and diagnostic tools, providing students with realworld experience during their studies. Our course offers insight into vehicle operating systems, teaching maintenance procedures through hands-on tasks using modern technology and tools.

What will I study on this course?

Level 1: Health and safety, introduction to motor vehicle, fault finding, cooling and lubrication, spark ignition and engine component and transmission.

Level 2: Engine technology, chassis, electrical, transmission, housekeeping in the automotive environment, tools, equipment and materials for vehicle maintenance and workplace relationships.

Level 3: Diagnostics and fault finding, the removal and replacement of a light vehicle chassis, electrical components and light vehicle transmission system component, diagnostics and repair of electrical faults.

PAINTING & DECORATING

PLUMBING

The plumbing trade is both exciting and challenging, offering a variety of routes to pursue such as domestic, commercial or industrial plumbing. You will learn about a wide variety of areas within plumbing and domestic heating, as you develop your skills in our real life workshops. The knowledge you gain can be demonstrated during practical lessons, giving you the experience needed for the industry.

What will I study on this course?

Level 1: Basic plumbing skills and processes, cold water processes, hot water processes, central heating, sanitation, above and below ground drainage systems, communication in building engineering services and health and safety.

Level 2: Plumbing science, plumbing processes, complex hot and cold water systems, central heating and gas installations, sanitation systems and health and safety.

DESIGN, SURVEYING AND PLANNING T-LEVEL

At City Skills, our Design, Surveying, and Planning T-Level, developed with employers, blends theory, practical learning, and a 45-day industry placement. You’ll spend 20% in handson construction experience and 80% in the classroom. This qualification, a result of collaboration with respected construction organisations, ensures comprehensive education valued in the industry. Upon completion, you’ll have the qualifications and skills for your future career. Taught by industry experts, our two-year course covers modules like Construction Design Principles and Digital Engineering Techniques, preparing you for a successful career in the construction sector.

What will I study on this course?

T-Level: Construction Design Principles, Digital Engineering Techniques, Building Design Science and Business.

What are the entry requirements?

Design, Surveying & Planning T-LEVEL (2 YEARS)

Students are required to have achieved 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or higher, including English and maths

What career opportunities are available to me after my course?

T-Levels aim to ready you for a vibrant career, especially with the diverse skills gained from the Construction T Level. It opens doors to roles like Architect, Quantity Surveyor, or Construction Manager. Equivalent to three A Levels, it also offers pathways to university or paid Apprenticeships. PASSPORT TO CONSTRUCTION

The Passport to Construction course, aligned with Open Awards Skills for Further Learning and Employment, awards credits for future studies or jobs. It boosts confidence, social skills, and academic abilities. The program includes trade taster sessions, meetings with professionals, and site visits in Salford. Successful students can advance to Build Salford traineeships, college programs, or apprenticeships. Our goal is to ensure a fun and enjoyable course while enhancing skills.

No prior qualifications are needed.

T-LEVEL COURSES EVER HEARD OF T-LEVELS?

They’re the BRAND NEW QUALIFICATION designed to launch you into the career that you want. The two year qualification combines classroom and work placements together on a course designed with both employers and businesses.

Equivalent to three A-levels, T-levels mean that you’ll spend 80% in the classroom and 20% on a placement to give you a head start in finding your dream career.

Our DESIGN, SURVEYING & PLANNING T-LEVEL is designed to integrate theory, practical learning, and a 45-day industry placement, offering a comprehensive education in collaboration with our fantastic industry partners. Developed with employers, this course emphasizes 20% hands-on construction experience and 80% classroom learning, equipping you with the qualifications and skills necessary for a successful career in the construction sector.

Our BUILDING SERVICES (ELECTROTECHNICAL) T-LEVEL at City Skills is tailored for hands-on learners with a passion for electrical aspects in construction. This two-year program fasttracks your journey to becoming a certified electrician, blending theory with practical experience in our amazing facilities and with employers. With pathways to higher education or apprenticeships, and accessible funding options, this qualification equips you for various roles in the industry, from Electrical Installation Engineering to Building Facilities Management.

APPRENTICESHIPS EXPLAINED

WHAT ARE THEY?

An apprenticeship is a job with training. It’s a real job, with handson experience. You will have a contract of employment and an apprenticeship study programme to support your development. This means that you will be working for a company, earning an income, and achieving a qualification with Salford City College. You can start an apprenticeship whether you’re 16 or 99, there’s no age limit.

WAGES

As an apprentice, you will receive a salary for your apprenticeship. This applies to time working and time spent training as part of your apprenticeship. The wage applies to all apprentices regardless of age.

CHOOSING AN APPRENTICESHIP

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to begin or progress in your career. We offer a wide range of apprenticeships at varying levels across a broad range of sectors. View our wide range of exciting apprenticeships vacancies on page 30-31.

APPRENTICESHIP LEVELS EXPLAINED

LEVEL 2 STANDARD

This is typically the first step on the apprenticeship ladder. Level 2 apprenticeships are an excellent starting point and will allow you to progress onto higher levels as you gain experience. These programmes usually last between 12 - 18 months.

LEVEL 3 STANDARD

Depending on your skills and experience, you may start on a Level 3 programme, or you may complete a Level 2 first. Level 3 programmes usually involve taking on more responsibility in the workplace or carrying out more skilful work.

LEVEL 4 HIGHER APPRENTICESHIP

These are equivalent to a first and second year of a university degree and you may carry out work involving management and organisational strategy. You will need to be in an appropriate job role to undertake the required skills for apprenticeships at this level.

LEVEL 7 DEGREE APPRENTICESHIP

These are equivalent to a first and second year of a university degree and you may carry out work involving management and organisational strategy. You will need to be in an appropriate job role to undertake the required skills for apprenticeships at this level.

BUILD SALFORD TRAINEESHIP EXPLAINED

WHAT IS THE BUILD SALFORD TRAINEESHIP?

The Build Salford traineeship is a unique programme for 16-24 year olds seeking a pathway to an apprenticeship with some of the best local construction companies.

The programme has over 20 dedicated industry partners, who all have one thing in mind: to create as many opportunities as possible for young people looking to kick start their career in the construction sector. The programme has had fantastic success since it began, with trainees now undertaking apprenticeships and employment with construction firms across the North West.

WHAT WOULD I LEARN?

The preparation begins with the chance to gain a CSCS certificate and culminates with a seven-week work placement. The traineeship has a high success rate, with many students progressing onto an apprenticeship or employment after completion.
