As I reflect on the wonderfully busy months since our last issue, I delight at all the ways God continues to bless us. The past few months have been marked by significant milestones, including the celebration of the first and perpetual vows of our young sisters. The new Associate Director of Development, Sr. Katie Flanagan, has been hard at work in the office, bringing fresh energy and vision to our efforts. Schools and ministry programs have begun their new academic year; and our Mother Superior, Mother Chiara Cassuola, came to visit us in September. While she was here, she formally welcomed six young women to begin their journey of discernment with the Salesian Sisters.
Looking ahead, I am filled with anticipation for the Autumn Gala and our beloved Christmas party. These gatherings not only provide an opportunity to spend time together, but also serve as a vital source of support for the mission of the Sisters. I am deeply grateful for your ongoing generosity, which makes all these happenings possible. Thank you for being an essential part of our mission and our family!

A Father's Legacy: Family Fairness
We’ve covered the cardinal virtues of prudence, temperance, and fortitude, so to close them out, let’s talk about justice. Justice is a cardinal virtue because it regulates relationships. It is sometimes deemed the most important of the cardinal virtues. Justice involves giving rewards or punishments that are merited; it also includes moderation — only taking one’s fair share. When you think about it, justice is closely related to charity in that it regulates relationships with others and what is available to all of us.
We’ve all experienced a perceived injustice towards ourselves, and we can agree that it feels dreadful. It fosters a ton of negativity, it damages our relationships with others, and it leaves us with a sense of loss.
Justice ensures that each of us enjoys our turn at anything intended to be universal. Honestly, justice has a heart. Whenever I think of justice, I am reminded of my dad, especially when I was little. He was fair… and he was merciful. When we misbehaved, he would dole out discipline, to be sure, but he had a heart when he determined that a punishment may not have fit the ‘crime’. He was not above softening a sentence when it made sense.
Likewise, he made sure each of us had a turn at being the oldest kid home during the school day — the one who had a little seniority, who could make some ‘big kid’ decisions. To do this, he invented a title for the oldest preschooler at home. That individual was called either the Man of the House or the Lady of the House (MotH or LotH for short). The MotH/LotH could manage the little ones. They (for the first time in their little lives) got to skip their afternoon nap. That was a BIG PLUS! After dinner, they could stay up a little later with the big kids. Clearly, having a title made each little one feel VERY important. They had no extra power, no significant perks, or anything else beyond these little extras. BUT…getting your turn at being the MotH or the LotH was VERY IMPORTANT. Getting your place in the cycle meant a great deal because it was just.
Because my dad was born with a musical soul, he imbued our lives with music. As each child’s personality became more well-defined, he would assign a popular song that he felt was fitting, either because of its title or lyrics… and the way they suited us. To this day, each of us knows “our song”, and treasures it because it came from him.
His song choices were accurate and learning what song he ‘gave’ you was an expected milestone — and it was fair.
Another experience I had with justice happened at MHC Academy during my junior year. I mouthed off to Sr. Felicia (it’s probably quite amazing to you that someone as shy and quiet as I am would be sassy with a Sister). I hadn’t done my homework, but I fibbed and told her I had. Clearly, Sr. Felicia saw through this lie, and planned to give me a pass to go to my locker and get it (where it definitely was NOT). During my smartmouthing, Sr. Judith, the principal, walked in, sized up the situation, sent me to her office, and eventually suspended me. (ME! She suspended ME!!)
After my suspension, every time Sr. Felicia saw my parents, she told them that I didn’t deserve to be suspended, convinced that I was such a good girl, and that she knew I didn’t mean it. (I still remember her fondly — she was pretty easy to fool!) While I completely deserved that suspension, I felt Sr. Felicia’s love for me because she saw beyond one bad choice I made. She saw that I was not the person I was on my best day — and also not the person I was on my worst day. She knew I was somewhere in between, and she felt I was closer to my best day than my worst.
Like you, I have experienced both justice and injustice in my life. Like you, I’m also very appreciative when justice is tempered by charity — especially when I don’t think I’ve earned it. When we are in the position of finding just resolutions to the situations we face, let’s remember to temper our decisions with love, forgiveness, and above all, charity.
Now I have a voluntary assignment for you. Send your stories of justice to partners@salesiansisters.org. I’m interested to hear what you’ve experienced. Feel free to also guess my song, given to me by my dad. Remember, it reflects my personality as he saw me. To ensure a just outcome, I’ll let you know whether anyone gets it right!
I leave you in the heart and hands of Our Lady,

Perpetual Vows
Forever Yours, Jesus!
By Sr. Molly Heine, FMA
Sr. Molly Heine professes her perpetual vows in the hands of Provincial Sr. Colleen Clair.
Before the final profession Mass began, my heart was racing, not because I was scared but because I knew what I was about to do. I was so excited. After 10 years of formation I was finally about to join my life to Christ forever. As I professed the forever vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, I was surrounded by my Sisters, family, and friends. Looking at them, my heart was filled with so much joy and gratitude. In article 10 of our Salesian Sisters’ Constitutions, it says that each FMA makes her vows, “In communion with [her] Sisters.”
As I read that line as I professed my vows, I felt so much peace because I don’t live out my calling alone but with my Sisters united in Christ. I feel so loved and blessed that God has created me and called me to live out my life, with love, as a Salesian Sister with and for the young. I am reminded of the beautiful words found in the book of the prophet Isaiah, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine." - Isaiah 43:1

Mary Has Done Everything!
Sr. Jazmin Rangel, Sr. Kaitlin Trokan and I made our first professions as Daughters of Mary Help of Christians on August, 5th. The ceremony aptly began with a prelude hymn, the O Maria Vergine Potente prayer written by Don Bosco to Mary Help of Christians, asking Mary to be the protector of the Church and to receive us into heaven one day. Then was a moment of much emotion: walking down the aisle arm-in-arm with my parents, looking at the many smiling faces of the people from Canada and the Eastern United States who have supported me over the years, and joining in worship of God with the magnificent choir. I knew that we were also supported by many who could not be there in person but who were watching via livestream. Surrounded by my Sisters, I felt, I am home. I looked around, and reflected on my life and echoed with Don Bosco, “Mary has done everything.”
We professed our vows in the hands of Sr. Colleen Clair, our Provincial. Then, we received the Constitutions and the crucifix from the celebrant of the Mass, Fr. Dominic Tran, SDB. He said, “Receive the cross of the Lord Jesus.
Clothe yourself in the crucified and risen Christ and serve him with a spouse’s fidelity in his Body which is the Church.” What a task, which each day, I must ask for God’s grace to fulfill!
My first assignment is at Our Lady of Sorrows in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The other day in church, I felt Jesus say in my heart, “Remember why you’re here.” I am here because Jesus and Mary, Help of Christians called me here. I am here because I love God and my neighbor. And I am here to serve the young and their families. So, in communion with my Sisters, let’s get to work! - Sr. Natalie Doummar, FMA
Sr. Natalie with her family.
On August 5, I was able to meet Jesus at the altar in a special way and make my vows. When I look back on the beauty of that moment, I am grateful for the presence of my family, friends, and Sisters, but I’m most grateful to Jesus for calling me to this beautiful vocation. - Sr. Kaitlin Trokan, FMA
The day of my first profession was a day of great joy and beauty. As the day unraveled, two things that two Sisters said stayed with me for the day: to be present and to ask God for big things, without limit, for everybody, anybody and all because this day was one of many graces.
I felt loved and blessed as I was embraced by my Sisters and family members who had flown from Illinois just to see me, remembering with gratitude those who had celebrated with me virtually. I had read and studied the formula of our vows before, but taking my vows publicly? Now I get to live as a Daughter of Mary Help of Christians with my Sisters and with the young. - Sr. Jazmin Rangel, FMA

“Make A Joyful Noise to the Lord!”- Ps 100:2
Sr. Mary Ann Caspary begins a gentle musical introduction on the organ, her fingers dancing over the keys as the notes swell high into the rafters of St. Joseph Chapel. It is the beginning of the Mass for First Profession and the chapel is humming with excitement. As with any of the Province’s major celebrations, the Sisters and women of formation make up the choir and serve as musicians for the liturgy. By the patient effort of all and the grace of God, a harmony of voices and instruments coalesce to make beautiful music for the Lord and all those in attendance.
Within the province there are guitar players, flutists, violinists, drummers, those who play the chimes, ukulele players and even a bassist. Usually serving as conductor is Sr. Margaret Wilhelm, Province Treasurer, who keeps the choir and musicians on beat. The Sisters often don’t have much time to practice but make the most of the one or two rehearsals they have right before the solemn Masses for the Jubilee Anniversaries of our Sisters, Province Gratitude Day, the vows of our Sisters, the visit of Mother General or a funeral for one of the deceased Sisters.
Music is part of our charismatic history as St. John Bosco used to say, "An oratory without music is like a body without a soul." God gives us gifts that we might use them to glorify God and participate in His mission!
Sisters, novices, and friends of the community offer their voices as part of the choir.

A Visit of Hope: Mother Chiara in our Midst
Mother Chiara Cazzuola, Superior General of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (also known as the Salesian Sisters) arrived from Newark Airport at St. Joseph Provincial House in Haledon, NJ, accompanied by a police escort. Six motorcycle officers surrounded her van, ensuring a smooth and safe journey to the Sisters and women in formation who were eagerly waiting for her. Aspirants and novices held a homemade welcome banner, and as her vehicle passed through, cheers and bubbles filled the air. Though it was her first visit to the province, it felt like a homecoming for the Salesian Sister, who is known as “Mother” to over 10,500 Sisters in 97 countries.
From the moment she arrived, Mother Chiara’s warm and approachable personality was clear. Despite a long, early flight, her smile greeted each Sister, young person, and adult who approached her. Laughter and joy filled the room as everyone gathered in the chapel for formal introductions and prayer. As the 10th successor of St. Mary Mazzarello, Mother Chiara is a sign of unity for the Institute as she is entrusted with guiding the Sisters in the characteristic spirit of our Founders.
Young people from the Salesian Provincial Youth Council attended the weekend, representing schools from as far as Ohio and Florida. Their excitement was evident as they eagerly took selfies and videos with her.
Photos from top to bottom: Mother Chiara poses with Sr. Amy Nguyen who dressed up as St. Mary Mazzarello as part of a skit; Women in formation welcome Mother with a handmade sign; Sr. Colleen Clair, Mother Chiara, and Sr. Phyllis Neves greet Paterson Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney.
Some students even offered greetings in Italian. Mary Help of Christians Academy junior Laura LoPresti shared, "Meeting Mother Chiara was unforgettable. I was nervous at first, but her warmth made me feel comfortable and happy. She gave the best hugs and showed her love often."
Mother Chiara's simplicity and humility put everyone at ease. She infused humor into her talks, while addressing serious topics with depth. The weekend included special Masses with our Salesian priests and brothers and the Bishop of the Paterson diocese, Kevin J. Sweeney. Mother Chiara also spoke with various groups, within the Salesian Family and was the guest of honor at a festive luncheon. Young people gave vocal and dance performances, and the Mary Help of Christians Academy choir enhanced the Salesian Family Mass with beautiful music.
On the evening of Sunday, September 22nd, Mother Chiara was also able to receive the six young women who have formally entered with the Sisters as aspirants — beginning their first year of study to become Sisters.
Mother Chiara’s central message focused on staying faithful to the Salesian charism and living authentically. She noted the growing vocations in North America as a sign of the vitality of the Salesian charism. Sr. Virginia Dickey reflected, "Her visit was a gift from heaven. It felt like having Mary Help of Christians among us. There was so much joy, and our lay helpers were deeply moved when she embraced each one, offering blessings and prayers for their families."
Mother Chiara also visited the Sisters in Montreal, Canada before returning briefly to New Jersey to address the students of MHC Academy. She then packed her bags for Rome to prepare for visits around Italy and Europe. We thank her for her visit and are grateful we belong to such a great Institute!

Meet Our New Aspirants!
Six young women from around the Eastern United States and Canada were accepted as Aspirants on Sunday, September 22nd. They received their medals of Mary Help of Christians from the hands of Mother Chiara Cazzuola, Mother General of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. As Aspirants with the St. Joseph Province, they begin a year of discernment during which they will take classes on Salesian spirituality, live and pray with the Sisters, and serve in various apostolates including teaching Catechism to the young and organizing afterschool Salesian clubs.
Kathy Cabezas is 28 years old and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. She then went to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science in 2018, and then worked as a software engineer. She found out about the Salesians through her friends from college who entered formation with the Salesian Sisters: Sr. Janna San Juan FMA, Sr. Juliana Alfonso FMA, and Ivona Kolak (a postulant in the Province of the Western United States - SUO). Over the years, Kathy’s desire to discern religious life grew and so did her attraction to the Salesians’ spirituality and charism.
Rachel Franklin is from Midlothian, Virginia and is 31 years old. She first met the Salesian Sisters at a conference she attended as a college student, and the idea that God might be calling her to religious life was first placed on her heart. She taught 3rd grade for five years and kindergarten for three years at the same Catholic school she attended as a student. Throughout her years as a teacher, God continued to place the desire for religious life on her heart. After visiting the Salesians for a Come-and-See and going on the Mornese Experience retreat, she knew that entering with the Salesians was what God was calling her to do.
Erin O’Neill is from Littleton, Massachusetts and is 23 years old. She went to the University of Pittsburgh where she double-majored in Statistics and Mathematics-Economics. Erin was first introduced to the Salesian Sisters through a college roommate. Last year, Erin completed a year of VIDES (Volunteers International for Development Education & Solidarity) domestically within the United States. During that year, in which she served as a camp nurse and taught math, among other things, she grew in her faith and relationship with God and found herself drawn to religious life with the Salesian Sisters.
Amber Payne is from Philpot, Kentucky and is 23 years old. She received her Bachelor of Science in Special Education and Middle School English Education from Brescia University in Owensboro, Kentucky. She was first introduced to the Salesian Sisters through the Fiat Project, a virtual discernment program where the sisters accompany women to discern God’s call for their life. Through the Fiat Project, she witnessed the joy of the Salesian Sisters and their love for Jesus Christ and the youth. She recognized her heart’s desires through their life and joyfully felt called to enter as an Aspirant with the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.
Michelle Pacheco is a Canadian from Brampton, Ontario, a little outside of Toronto. She studied Sociology and Global Development at Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario. Michelle is 27 years old and spent the last three years working for the Office of Catholic Youth within the Archdiocese of Toronto. She first met the Salesian Sisters through a diocesan young adult conference. As Michelle got to know the Salesian Sisters and their mission to serve young people, she realized how her experiences and desires fit the charism of the community. After some time of discerning religious life, God’s gentle voice led her here!
María José Urdaneta is originally from Maracaibo, Venezuela and is 21 years old. She was first introduced to the Sisters by a Salesian priest in her parish in Tampa, Florida. She participated in the Fiat Project in 2023, and after a couple of Come-and-See visits, she made her decision to apply in 2024. She deepened her faith through retreat ministry and working in her parish, and she decided to enter with the Salesian Sisters because she felt Jesus affirming it in her heart.

The Salesian Sisters are happy to announce their 2024 Autumn Gala, which will be held on Thursday, November 21 at 6:30 pm at The Grove in Cedar Grove, NJ. This evening we are privileged to honor our dear friends RoseMary "Honey" and Joseph A. Clair, III, posthumously. Joe and Honey left their sixteen children a legacy of fidelity, moral values, and true Christian discipleship. For generations, their influence will be felt. We also recognize Frieda Tahan Aboyoun & Josephine Infante, Mary Help of Christians Academy, class of 1964, as this year's Alumnae of Distinction Recipients. Frieda and Josephine remained best friends beyond their years at Mary Help of Christians Academy. They will be recognized for their remarkable achievements in business and community development.
The gala raises much needed funds for the financial aid program at MHC Academy. With a strong emphasis on Catholic values and academic rigor, MHC Academy prepares students for success in prestigious universities and colleges all over the country. Your generosity helps more young women have the opportunity to learn and thrive in an environment that develops their gifts and encourages them to serve others.
Cecilia Martinez Cacciatore, Villa Class of '73
Cecilia Martinez Cacciatore, Villa Madonna Class of 1973, was born in Miami, FL to a large family of Cuban heritage. Her aunt, Sr. Gloria Machado, FMA (who died in 2020), had emigrated from Cuba in 1961. Cecilia's parents returned to Cuba when Cecilia was a baby, and she later returned to the U.S. with her mom when she was 10 years old. Childhood was a tough time for her, as her dad and grandmother remained in Cuba. Her mom moved to Tampa and Cecilia attended Villa Madonna for 7th and 8th grade. Growing up as part of the Salesian family was a normal way of life, but also very special for Cecilia. Here she shares her memories.
Sr. Gloria was 32 years old and a Salesian Sister in Cuba for 12 years before emigrating. Was she happy to come to America?
“Tia Berta” (as she was known to family) loved being here because most of her family lived in Tampa. Every Wednesday, her mother and sisters would get together for dinner rotating between their homes and the convent.
What was it like having your aunt at Villa while you were a student there? Did you have her as a teacher? I did not have Sr. Gloria as a teacher. She taught the younger grades, and I was only at Villa for 7th and 8th grade. Three of my teachers were Sr. Yamile, Sr. Wilma, and Sr. Dora. The principal was Sr. Amparo. I remember that the lower grades at that time began accepting boys, so it was a time of change.
How did your education at Villa shape who you are as an adult?
It was very hard at first to be at Villa Madonna School. I was so young to leave Cuba, my father and grandmother, my friends, and life as I knew it. I was afraid I would never be able to go back again, and never see my dad again. It was hard. I eventually learned that it was much better to be here in America, and came to love Villa. I really didn’t understand it at the time though. At 21 years old, I was able to go see my dad as President Carter said Americans could visit. I was the oldest person on the plane to go back. It was great to see my family again, but I realized how much I now loved America.
Your store, Cacciatore and Sons Meat Market and Deli, is over 100 years old. What was it like marrying into the Italian Cacciatore family that was so wellknown all over Tampa?
Mark and I met through our shared love of dancing. His large family greeted me and embraced me with open arms. The business of owning a store and meat market isn’t an easy one. I was glad to be working at Villa, but I had to quit working at Villa because my mother-in-law
wanted to retire from working at the store – she was still working at age 80! – so I went to work at the store.
Now your son, Anthony, “A.J.,” plays a huge part in running the store. Do you have hope that he will carry on being “family” to the Sisters and Villa into the future?
A.J. knows of my love for the Sisters, and he loved his aunt, Sr. Gloria. I have no doubt he will carry on the support for the Sisters and their works at Villa Madonna.
Mark and Cecilia Cacciatore are being honored at the 21st Annual Thanksgiving Basket Dinner Celebration on Saturday, November 23, for their support of the Salesian Sisters and their mission to youth. For more information or tickets, please contact Theresa Anderson: (813) 2053195 or email tandersondev@hotmail.com.

"Hope Does not Disappoint"- Jubilee Year 2025
Pope Francis has declared 2025 to be a Jubilee Year dedicated to HOPE. During the Jubilee Year, the faithful are encouraged to rekindle their faith by making special pilgrimmages, take part in the Sacrament of Confession, intensify their prayer life, and attend any number of Jubilee events intended to strengthen and revive faith. A plenary indulgence may also be received during this special year. Below is an excerpt from the official "Bull of Indiction" proclaimed by Pope Francis.
Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring. Even so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt. Often we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness. For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope. God’s word helps us find reasons for that hope. (1)
“Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or the sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor

powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” ( Rom 8:35.37-39). Here we see the reason why this hope perseveres in the midst of trials: founded on faith and nurtured by charity, it enables us to press forward in life. (3)
The coming Jubilee will thus be a Holy Year marked by the hope that does not fade, our hope in God. May it help us to recover the confident trust that we require, in the Church and in society, in our interpersonal relationships, in international relations, and in our task of promoting the dignity of all persons and respect for God’s gift of creation. (25)
Let us even now be drawn to this hope! Through our witness, may hope spread to all those who anxiously seek it. May the way we live our lives say to them in so many words: “Hope in the Lord! Hold firm, take heart and hope in the Lord!” (Ps. 27:14) (25)
December 29, 2024: Every bishop around the world celebrates Holy Mass in his cathedral with the people of his diocese for the solemn opening of the Jubilee Year in his local diocese.
January 6, 2026: The Jubilee Year will conclude with the closing of the Holy Door in the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican.

Unexpected Reminders
Ikeep a piece of river jade on my desk, a gift from a friend in Taiwan who plucked it from a river. Unlike jade mined from the earth — valued for its clarity and flawless color — river jade is more like sea glass: personally meaningful but not worth much. For me, this small piece of jade adds something special to my space.
Do you keep objects on your desk? For some, knickknacks can be a distraction, but for me, they help focus my thoughts. My jade, in particular, reminds me of qualities I want in my life. Jade has been described as a symbol of virtue: it radiates light, reveals its flaws, and sings with a clear note when struck, rather than breaking.
When I’m stuck on a problem, I often pick up my jade. Shaped like a rough slab, it has many layers, and light moves through it in a fascinating way. Somehow, it feels both clear and dense at the same time. This reminds me to seek simple, transparent solutions. Jade also maintains its own temperature—cool to the touch, quickly releasing heat—reminding me not to hold onto stress. The black spots on it, known in Chinese as "flowers," add to its character.
In the Catholic tradition, we, too, have small objects that serve as reminders of spiritual truths — sacramentals like rosaries, medals, or statues. These holy items ground us in faith, much like my jade does for me. Holding a rosary, for example, can be soothing when our minds are overwhelmed.
In a world filled with distractions, such reminders are vital. A 2021 study from the University of California found that office workers check their phones every 47 seconds, nearly 800 times a day. How do we break that cycle of constant stimulation? Perhaps, as with sacramentals, a small, meaningful object can help center us and reconnect us to our faith throughout the day. Even if we check our phones 800 times, we can seek a moment of spiritual reflection 801 times.
God works with us through the unique things that speak to our personalities. For me, it's the jade that helps me stay grounded and let go of unnecessary worries as I trust in God. I also carry a jade rosary in my pocket for the same reason. Maybe you have something equally special that calls you back to your faith. I encourage you to find what that might be, and if you have a unique one, I’d love to hear about it. Wishing you a peaceful and reflective autumn.

o you have a happy occasion you would like to share? The Salesian Sisters will celebrate with you. Is it a time to mark a less-than-happy occasion? Our prayer for your special day will commemorate this event. Do you have someone to thank? All of the Sisters will help multiply your gratitude. When you “Give Us This Day” the Sisters will pray for your intention and for the person whose sacrificial gift supports the endowment for our retired Sisters. Let this gift of time be an expression of our concern and love for one another. Know that you are special to us. Thank you, and God bless you!

What's better than having one puppy visit the Provincial House? Two puppies! A past pupil of Mary Help of Christians Academy brought her two French Bulldog puppies — Ollie and Mia — to visit with the Sisters. The nine-week old puppies enjoyed being doted on and passed around from Sister to Sister. They were very well-behaved and brought much joy to the convent.
