Dear Friends,

As we wrap up another joyful and grace-filled school year, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for you, our cherished partners. Your friendship, trust, and generosity sustain the work of the Salesian Sisters and allow us to bring Christ’s love to countless young hearts.

This season is especially rich with blessings. We rejoice with the Universal Church in welcoming our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. May his leadership inspire a renewed fervor in all our apostolic endeavors. We also honor our Sisters celebrating milestone anniversaries, whose lives are a shining testament to faithful love and tireless service.

Our houses and hearts are buzzing with the energy of end-of-school celebrations, graduations, and summer camp preparations. Know that you are remembered daily in our prayers with deep affection. Thank you for walking with us in this mission of hope!

Salesian Life is a Life of JOY

We touched on joy last time as we discussed Salesian virtues that are particular to our approach to holiness. I want to tell you a little story about how truly we live our trait of joy. This is a story you would otherwise never hear, because it took place only among the Sisters. But it exemplifies how intrinsic joy is to our Salesian way of life.

Sr. Catherine Altamura at one point served as the Provincial Secretary. Sr. Catherine is dedicated to her work, serious about her mission, and truly holy in spirit. In her capacity as Secretary, she was the point person for media calls. This is where our story begins…Sr.

Catherine received a phone call from a newspaper reporter. This reporter inquired about Sr. Suzanne Dauwalter, who was a young Sister serving as the Provincial Treasurer. The reporter had heard about the astonishing Sr. Suzanne, and wondered whether she was going to be canonized soon, citing all she had heard about Sr. Suzanne’s “reputable reputation for holiness” far and wide. The reporter’s organization wanted to do an article about Sr. Suzanne and her pending canonization.

Poor Sr. Catherine kept trying to explain that sainthood occurs after death, and Sr. Suzanne was very much NOT dead. Yet. “She’s a good young Sister. She is very prayerful, but she is still young. She’ll be with us for a long time, she isn’t…” Sr. Catherine couldn’t say, “She isn’t dead!” Interestingly, the reporter was inadvertently disconnected a few times, but this was an intrepid reporter, calling back every time.

As it turns out, the “reporter” was Sr. Suzanne herself, pulling a prank on Sr. Catherine. In all transparency,

Sr. Suzanne was being actively encouraged in these shenanigans by none other than me. The evolution of this prank call was travel boredom — Sr. Suzanne and I were on a vocation promotion trip together, and we were in the car, joking about prank calls from our past…and this inspired us to devise a shared prank call. Since I was driving, and I laugh much too easily, Sr. Suzanne executed the call. Flawlessly.

St. John Bosco would often say, “Run, jump, shout, but do not sin,” or, “Enjoy yourself as much as you like — if only you keep from sin.” That is what we Sisters do among ourselves and with the young. We enjoy life, we have fun, we laugh and play…while doing good, to keep far away from sin. Our little prank was harmless, and entertained us to no end, especially Sr. Suzanne’s repeated “reputable reputation” for holiness. As we went through tunnel after tunnel, getting disconnected or hanging up because we were laughing so hard, we were freshly inspired with new material, never hesitating to call Sr. Catherine back, surely interrupting something important.

I tell you this story because it illustrates so clearly how imbued our Salesian life is with joy. We actively seek it; and when it is not there, we create it. This is the way we Sisters interact with one another, because joy is so integral to our identity. This is the way our communities live, and when children are part of it, of course, the joy is multiplied, and tomfoolery always takes place.

Kids are a natural source of comic relief. I can still remember Julia, a sixth grader, telling me, “Sr. Colleen, you know how old pictures are in black and white…I wonder if maybe…the world wasn’t black and white, but maybe the camera just took pictures in black and white!” I couldn’t wait for recess to run to the office and call her mom to share Julia’s insight; we laughed for a long while about that.

Whether it’s a “reputable reputation,” or the unsuspecting realization that the world is indeed, not black and white, there is a lot to be happy about. Laughing about this is what a Salesian on the path of holiness does!

Smoke, Speculation, and a Surprise!

Salesian Schools Follow the Papal Conclave

On Thursday, May 8, 2025, the anticipation and excitement surrounding the election of Pope Leo XIV was palpable across Salesian schools throughout the province. Religion classes set aside their usual lessons to delve into the role of the pope and the intricate process of papal elections. Students excitedly speculated on which cardinal they believed the Holy Spirit would inspire the electors to choose.

At Mary Help of Christians Academy, in North Haledon, NJ, theology classrooms streamed the live feed of the Sistine Chapel smokestack, waiting anxiously for the telltale white smoke that would signal the election of a new pontiff. Students were commenting on a baby seagull perched near the chimney, when the first wisps of white smoke appeared. Cheers erupted and joyful shouts echoed down the halls as everyone stood, eyes glued to the screen, eager to learn the identity of the newly chosen pope.

“As I stood in front of the screen in the school library, watching the live footage of the Vatican doors, I felt a

surge of excitement,” shared Gianna Balderas, a junior. “When it was announced that our next pope was an American, I felt proud and hopeful knowing that someone who has lived among us and understands our generation would be leading the Catholic Church. The fact that he lives his faith authentically and relates to the everyday struggles of people like me fills me with trust and hope for our spiritual future.”

“I had goosebumps. It was like we were in St. Peter’s, all together praying for the new pope!”

In a similar vein, Maria Barone, a freshman, reflected, “On May 8th, I started watching the live stream of the Conclave with my math class around 11:30 a.m., and it wasn’t until around 1:20 p.m. when the Pope came out on the balcony. That hour and fifty minutes felt more like five hours as I sat and watched in deep anticipation.

Newly elected Pope Leo XIV waves from the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica in his first public appearance. Edgar Beltrán, The Pillar

While waiting, my friends and I found a list of possible candidates. I saw that Robert Prevost was one, and I noticed he was from America. I thought to myself, ‘It would be a miracle if an American was ever named Pope.’ And then…it happened…Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, walked out onto the balcony, and I was surprised by how excited I felt along with everyone else watching!”

At Villa Madonna School in Tampa, FL, the conclave was on in Sister Amy Nguyen's classroom and when Robert Prevost's name was announced, there was an explosion of joy from the students. They jumped out of their seats and clapped overjoyed.

Sister Amy recounts, "It was exciting for the students and myself! I know the kids felt a greater sense of Church and family. When the Pope was named, we shouted “HABEMUS PAPAM!” and prayed a Hail Mary asking the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, to guide and protect Pope Leo. I know this is something the children will never forget. I won't forget it either!"

And at St. Anthony School in Hawthorne, NJ, students from three years old to eighth grade gathered to watch Pope Leo’s first moments as pope. For the hour between the announcement and the introduction, Sister Mary Jackson, Principal, fielded students’ questions about the process of electing a pope and the papacy.

“We were so thrilled. I had goosebumps. It was like we were in St. Peter’s, all together praying for the new pope,” said Sister Mary, who was moved by Pope Leo’s first words in his address, “Peace be with you.” “When we have God’s peace and love, it changes our lives. It’s that simple, but sometimes we must be reminded.”

A St. Anthony’s eighth grader, Jason Barone, called the papal event “momentous.” “I was surprised that the pope is American — the first in history. I’m excited,” Barone said. “He has served people in Peru, which has a lot of poor people, so he will serve the poor and the world as pope. He also connects with youth and is modest and humble like Pope Francis.”

“Pope Leo is really attentive, present in the full sense of the word to every person he meets and in the meetings he presides over.”

For the Salesian Family, this historic moment holds additional significance. The former Mother General of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Sister Yvonne Reungoat, FMA, had the opportunity to collaborate closely with then Cardinal Robert Francis

Students in Sister Amy's 5th grade class at Villa Madonna School watch as Pope Leo XIV is elected the 267th Successor of Peter.

Prevost during his time as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. In this role, he was tasked with recommending candidates for episcopal appointments, and Sister Yvonne, one of three women in the office, assisted in evaluating and selecting leaders for the Church.

Sharing her impressions of the new pope, Sister Yvonne remarked, “I see the new Pope Leo XIV as gifted with a beautiful personality. He is very deep spiritually; he is serene, simple, with great ability to listen, good at relations. He is really attentive, present in the full sense of the word to every person he meets and in the meetings he presides over. His gaze is piercing and a gentle smile illuminates his face. He has a good capacity for discernment and knows how to read situations in the light of faith. He is also profoundly human, a man of balance, open but clear in his fidelity to the Doctrine of the Church. I can say that he has a great love for the Church and a remarkable sense of serene responsibility.”

In his first public address, Pope Leo XIV made unity and peace the central theme of his papacy: “Hand in hand with God and among ourselves, let us go forward! We want to be a synodal Church, a Church that walks, a Church that always seeks peace, that always seeks charity, that tries to be close especially to those who suffer.”

For the Salesian Sisters, who promise fidelity to the Holy Father as the successor of St. Peter and the Vicar of Christ, this new chapter in the Church brings renewed purpose and joy. We stand with Pope Leo XIV as he takes up the cross of leadership and shepherds the global Church toward deeper communion, renewed evangelization, and a future rooted in hope. United in prayer, we embrace this moment not only as witnesses to history, but as active participants in the Church’s ongoing mission of love.

Eleven Salesian Sisters Celebrate Anniversaries

Each year, we honor the Salesian Sisters who celebrate significant milestones in their religious profession. These jubilees mark not only a passage of time but a profound testament to God’s unwavering fidelity and the Sister’s steadfast “yes” to her vocation. While words can never fully convey our gratitude for the gift of each Sister, they have generously shared a few reflections on this special occasion.

Sr. Carmen Morales, FMA - 70 Years

“I can never thank God enough for calling me to serve the young and the poor as a Salesian Sister. I love doing His will wherever I am sent. I have always followed the words of Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego, ‘Why do you worry? Am I not here, I, who am your mother?’”

Sr. Catherine Altamura, FMA - 65 Years

“These 65 years of religious Salesian life leave me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude to God, the Blessed Mother, the Institute, and my family. I consider myself privileged to have served and educated the young people in several states of the USA with the hearts of St. Mary Domenica Mazzarello and Don Bosco. Truly, ‘The Lord has done great things for me. I am filled with joy!’” (Psalm 126:3)

Sr. Estelle Johnson, FMA - 65 Years

“My sixty-five years of Salesian life have been full of joy. I am grateful to God and our Blessed Mother for the gift of my vocation.”

Sr. Mary Anne Zito, FMA - 65 Years

“Sixty-five years of FMA Religious Life! I will need an eternity to express my gratitude to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph for this gift of miracles and love for me. I am immensely grateful for the FMA, my family, friends, and adopters who have journeyed this beautiful path with me. I hold you all in my heart and prayers.”

Sr. Lise Guitard, FMA - 60 Years

“Blessed are you, Lord, for these 60 years as an FMA! Thank you, Lord, for the Salesian spirit that has helped me radiate joy, mercy, and love. May Mary continue to hold my hand and walk with me until the end of my days.”

Sr. Elizabeth Ann Hottot, FMA - 60 Years

“The Lord has done great things for me...Holy His Name!”

Sr. Alphonsine Roy, FMA - 60 Years

“At Cana, Mary said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ He called me, and I am so grateful and blessed to have been chosen to such a vocation. Walking with Mary gave me great joy, and I am thankful to my family, the Sisters, the many young people I met and all the dear members of the Salesian family.”

Sr. Judith Suprys, FMA - 60 Years

“I thank God and the Blessed Virgin Mary for the undeserved precious gift of my Salesian vocation. My appreciation and gratitude grow every day for this pearl of great price and the blessings that have come with it: 64 years of formators and formation to Salesian, religious, spiritual-active life; caring Superiors and Sisters in community; wonderful young people, parents, and collaborators in my life’s work; amazing opportunities offered by the Province and the Institute; unfailing support from my family. Jesus’ words have rung so true, ‘And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. (Mt 19:29)’”

Sr. Rufina Delgado, FMA - 50 Years

“I am grateful to God, the Institute, and my family for the love and guidance I received all these years in following my vocation as a Daughter of Mary Help of Christians. My gratitude, prayers, and love for you, dear Sisters, for your friendship and kindness through all these years.”

Sr. Hyunjoo Cecilia Park, FMA - 25 Years

“I have walked twenty-five years in the light of You, Lord. But greater than the journey itself is the wonder that You have loved me first, all along the way. May the song of gratitude and joy never cease within me.”

Sr. Theresa Lee, FMA - 25 Years

“‘How can I make a return to the Lord for all His goodness to me? I will raise the cup of salvation and call upon His name.’ (Ps.116:12-13). At every Mass and in my daily Rosary, I thank God for you, too, and ask for His blessings upon each one of you. God knows, and God provides.”

Guided by Faith, Ready to Lead

Fiorella Del Orbe, Valedictorian of the Mary Help of Christians Academy Class of 2025, received the Golden Scepter Award—the Academy’s highest honor, recognizing a young woman who embodies Beauty, Truth, and Joy. During her time at MHC Academy, Fiorella served as Secretary of the Student Council Executive Board, was a Core Team member of Peer Ministry, and acted as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. She also volunteered as a CCD teacher at her parish. Rooted in faith and dedicated to service, Fiorella is a shining example of a young woman formed in Salesian spirituality. Partners in Giving invited her to reflect on her years with the Sisters as she steps into the next chapter of her journey.

How long have you known the Salesian Sisters and in what ways?

I’ve known the Salesian Sisters for over 10 years. My first time meeting the Salesian Sisters was when I was 7 years old when Sister Mary Ann Caspary, FMA taught me to play the piano alongside my cousin. Shortly after, I joined summer camp at Mary Help of Christians Academy, and every summer until COVID-19, I was a camper there. I eventually became a counselor at the camp and was there for three years. In addition, I started going to St. Anthony School in Hawthorne, NJ — a Salesian school — and continued my Salesian education at Mary Help of Christians Academy. I guess I can say the Salesian Sisters and I go way back!

What has your Salesian education given to you?

The best thing that going to a Salesian school has given me is my faith life. It has taught me that having a relationship with God doesn’t have to be a solo, tedious task; rather, it can be fun, and you can love God surrounded by the people you love. If I had gone to another school, I don’t think my relationship with God would have been as strong. Most of all, I wouldn’t have made those Godly friendships that have further pushed me to grow in my faith.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I will be going to Carnegie Mellon University, and I hope to then get my Ph.D. and become a chemical engineer in the pharmaceutical industry, working in research and development. I also hope to become a Salesian Cooperator one day because I still want to be connected to the Salesians while exploring my career and having a family.

What is one high school memory that you will cherish forever?

One memory I’ll keep with me forever is the Salesian Leadership Retreat in Stony Point, NY. Before going on the retreat as a participant, my faith was more of a chore than a privilege. However, while I was there, I truly experienced God for the first time. It was because of that retreat that I not only found God but found the courage to share Him with others.

What advice do you have for young people about their faith?

Don’t be afraid to share your faith with the world. I know it can be scary, and there are so many people who will judge you but there are so many people that need God in their lives but have no one to share God with them. It is our job to be that person for them and build that community of love.

Top to bottom: Fiorella with classmates at graduation; Presenting Mr. Alvarez, the custodian at MHC Academy, with a gift and thank you card on Maintenance Appreciation Day which Fiorella began her freshman year; at the Leadership Retreat.

Crowning Mary Help of Christians with Past Pupils

On May 31, the Past Pupils' Union of Mary Help of Christians treated the Sisters of the Provincial House to an "ice cream truck" social. Following the social, all gathered in the Chapel for the Rosary and May Crowning of the Blessed Mother. Sister Domenica DiPeri, FMA crowned our Blessed Mother and Sister Mary Bertha Paquin, FMA crowned Baby Jesus.

Please “Give Us This Day”! Our Exchange of Love

Do you have a happy occasion you would like to share? The Salesian Sisters will celebrate with you. Is it a time to mark a less-than-happy occasion? Our prayer for your special day will commemorate this event. Do you have someone to thank? All of the Sisters will help multiply your gratitude. When you “Give Us This Day” the Sisters will pray for your intention and for the person whose sacrificial gift supports the endowment for our retired Sisters. Let this gift of time be an expression of our concern and love for one another. Thank you, and God bless you!

Summer is Almost Here!

As we wrap up another wonderful and enriching school year, excitement is building among the Salesian Sisters — Summer Camp season is upon us!

Whether soaking up the sun or engaging in hands-on learning, our Sisters and camp counselors are hard at work keeping our Summer Camp programs running smoothly across the province. Thanks to your continued goodness and generosity, these camps thrive.

Our camps offer children a high-quality, educational, and fun experience. Our mission is to create a space where every camper can learn, grow, and discover the best within themselves. Join us this summer in creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

Thank you and God bless you!

Sr. Mary Rinaldi, FMA and Sr. Katie Flanagan, FMA

just read the "contemplation from a past camper" article in the last Partners In Giving issue and it was AMAZING! Madeleine brought back so many memories. I remember camp exactly as she described. And yes, that is why we are as we are - the Salesian Spirit. How it molded our beings and souls. I don't recall the banana bread, but it may explain how and why I am famous for my banana bread! One of the things I do remember is the cinnamon toast and ribbon candy! Let Madeleine know that she brought me so much joy reading her article. Chris Barbieri, Brooklyn NY

Sisters Lead A Youth Retreat in Raleigh, NC

Nearly 60 high school students from the Diocese of Raleigh gathered for a retreat titled “Living Presence – An Encounter with Jesus Christ,” led by Sister Guerline Joseph, FMA, Sister Lillian Foxx, FMA, and Sister Molly Heine, FMA. The retreat, held on May 30-31, 2025, invited youth to deepen their relationship with Jesus and experience His presence through the Sacraments.

Over the course of the weekend, the Sisters gave talks that emphasized how a strong sense of one’s identity in Christ opens the way to encountering Him in the Eucharist and Reconciliation. In addition to spiritual formation, the retreat included engaging activities led by young adult leaders. Participants enjoyed a campfire with s’mores, dancing, sports, and various icebreakers. The young adult team also received mentorship from the Sisters, who shared tools and encouragement for their own spiritual growth.

Sister Lillian, who is fluent in Spanish, also led a parallel session for parents of the students. Using the same central message, she offered catechesis for the Spanish-speaking adults, making the retreat a truly family-oriented event. Reflecting on the retreat, Sister Guerline shared, “It was an incredible, life-giving experience. I often walk away from these retreats feeling like I’ve received far more than I’ve given. The young people came with open hearts, hungry and thirsty for God.”

A Jubilee Pilgrimmage to Washington, D.C.

Father MarcArthur Francois from St. Patrick & Assumption/All Saints Parish in Jersey City, NJ, and Sister Maryann Schaefer, FMA organized a trip for 165 members of the parish, including the Faith Formation group. They went to Washington, D.C. to visit the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the St. John Paul II Shrine as part of a Jubilee Pilgrimmage. It was a day honoring Our Lady, the Immaculate Help of Christians, and St. John Paul II — filled with prayer, excitement, and a wonderful Eucharistic Liturgy.

Be Sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down on you; then you are to be my witnesses…” - Acts 1:8

Before ascending into Heaven, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit upon his followers to help them live and share what they had learned from him — to make them his “witnesses.”

In Baptism, we become followers of Jesus, but that gift and that calling are meant to be developed and to grow in us throughout our lives, since most of us were baptized as infants. Confirmation is a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit to help and strengthen us in this journey of growth in living our Baptismal calling.

The Spirit we have received is not the world’s spirit but God’s Spirit, helping us to recognize the gifts he has given us.” (1 Cor 2:12)

SYMBOLS USED IN THE RITE OF CONFIRMATION

Laying on of Hands:

The Bishop lays his hand on the head of the person being confirmed and prays that he/she may receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit

Anointing with Chrism:

Oil is a sign of “strengthening” and of “consecrating” that is, setting apart for a special mission. The word for “Anointed One,” in Greek, is “Christos.” When the followers of Jesus moved into the Greek-speaking towns, they were called “Christianos,” meaning “followers of the Anointed One.” That’s where our name of “Christian” comes from.

In the Sacrament of Confirmation we receive a special outpouring of the Gifts of the Spirit. These gifts are found in Isaiah 11:2-3.

These gifts need to be recognized, nurtured, and practiced if they are to take root in us and bring forth the “fruits” that are indicated by St. Paul in his letter to the Galatians. These fruits of the Spirit are the characteristics of Jesus’ followers that result from our openness to the Holy Spirit living in us and that develop over time: Gal. 5:22-26)

Every year, fifty days after Easter. The Church celebrates the Feast of Pentecost as the beginning of the Church’s mission, entrusted to the first followers of Jesus who were gathered with Mary, in the Cenacle in Jerusalem. Through Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation, we are also fully initiated into the community of the Church and are, therefore, entrusted with this same mission, for we are the Church today!

WHAT DOES OUR CONFIRMATION ASK OF US?

When we “confirmed” our Baptismal commitment in the Sacrament of Confirmation we committed ourselves:

• To prayer and worship which expresses and strengthens our love relationship with God

• To the Church, the community of faith, through active participation in her life and mission

• To action, serving the world as Jesus did through outreach to the poor and needy and by witnessing to Jesus’ presence in the world today

Perhaps we can reflect on these two questions:

1. Which gifts of the Spirit have I most fully developed? Is there one I need to work on more intentionally?

2. Which “fruits of the Spirit” are most evident in my life?

Each day, the students volunteered with local organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Pepper Ranch Preserve, Pathways Early Education Center, and The Guadalupe Center, making a tangible difference in the community. In the evenings, they deepened their faith and friendships through Mass, powerful testimonies, prayer, and fun group activities. The experience offered a powerful combination of service, spiritual growth, and connection. It was a journey that not only impacted those they served but also transformed the hearts of those who participated.

ACADEMY OF OUR LADY HIGH SCHOOL, Marrero, LA — Senior Ashley Dubon takes moment to share her reflections on the Service Learning Class she took at Academy of Our Lady.

“I had the opportunity to volunteer at the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter and Grace at the Green Light. Through this experience, I was able to give back to my community and support individuals facing difficult circumstances. One of the most important lessons I learned is that homelessness doesn't have a single face or story — each person has a unique background — some struggle with addiction, while others have simply fallen on hard times and lost everything. While volunteering at Grace at the Green Light, I met a man who looked just like anyone you might pass on the street. He was well-dressed and carried himself confidently, and I never would have guessed he was in need. That moment really struck me — it reminded me not to judge someone's situation based on appearances. Overall, this service learning experience has completely changed the way I view homelessness. It has opened my eyes to the complexity of the issue and the humanity behind every story.”

ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL, Hawthorne, NJ — On Friday, May 23, 2025, St. Anthony School held its annual field day and BBQ with bounce houses and games like tug of war and musical chairs. It was also the day that the winner from the silent auction fundraiser got to to pie Fr. Frank Lennie, Parochial Vicar. He was such a good sport!

The Gift of Darkness

Darkness is often cast as the enemy to be overcome, but what if it is a gift? We associate it with fear, suffering, uncertainty, or being lost. But I have never believed darkness is inherently bad. When the world quiets, it reveals what is hidden, like stars. It silences distractions and slows the senses. The body responds to darkness too, calming itself, lowering cortisol levels, and preparing to rest.

John’s Gospel is unique. He uses allegory, symbolism, and a poetic writing style. He reflects often on the themes of darkness and light. In contrast, the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke are more narrative-based and less mystical. John always leaves me with some small truth to ponder. Mark is for when we want the briefest version of a story. John is for when we are ready to go deeper.

Recently, while reading the Gospel of John, I was struck by a particular detail he includes in his account of the resurrection:

“While it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb…” (John 20:1)

I am in darkness, the darkness of grief, health issues, insecurity, and loneliness. We all have some form of darkness. I can feel myself standing there with Mary Magdalene, breathing the brisk air, finding my way along the path more by memory than by sight. She came to the tomb while it was still dark. I observe her. She went searching for the Lord in the quiet, before dawn, in grief and confusion. She did not wait for clarity or a brighter path. She moved forward in love and longing. Can I follow her?

The other Gospels describe the resurrection at sunrise. But John, ever the mystic, places the encounter in the dark. Why? Perhaps because he knew from his own suffering that love does not wait for certainty or perfect circumstances. Perhaps because he wanted us to see ourselves in Mary Magdalene: vulnerable, hurting, but still faithful. The Lord had already risen. The light had already broken into the world. Mary just could not see it yet.

I also think John, as the last Gospel writer, included that detail because he had witnessed the development

of the early Christian community. He had seen the ebb and flow of light and darkness that accompanied its formation and growth. He wanted to remind them — and us — that Jesus does not wait for morning to begin His work.

“The longer days do not erase the night; they illuminate what it prepared. ”

As we transition from spring into summer, and the days stretch long with light, it is easy to forget the gifts of darkness. But seasons of stillness have value. The longer days do not erase the night; they illuminate what it prepared. In nature and in the soul, darkness nurtures us. It slows us down so we can hear again. It creates space for love to be revealed. And if we are willing to walk through it, like Mary Magdalene did, we just might find ourselves face to face with the Living God.

Whatever darkness you carry, do not be afraid of it. God does His finest work in the unseen. Let this season of growing light be a reminder: dawn does not cancel the dark. It fulfills it. And it is a holy place of encounter with God.
