A PUBLICATION OF THE SALESIAN SISTERS OF ST.

JOHN BOSCO

Dear Friends,

This issue celebrates the gift of new life blossoming in St. Joseph Province and our worldwide Institute. In October, we joyfully welcomed nine new aspirants who have begun their journey of discernment. The moment was made even more meaningful as Sr. Domenica Di Peri—who celebrated her 100th birthday—presented each of them with their medals.

The Salesian Family also rejoices in another one of our Sisters joining the communion of Saints. St. Maria Troncatti was canonized by Pope Leo on October 19th. Pray for us, St. Maria!

We invite you to also read an important message from Sr. Mary found on page 11 as she continues to give her “yes” to the Lord. Know how much we cherish each and every one of you! &

Faith, Persuasion, and Salesian Joy!

Let’s interrupt our discussion on Salesian holiness to talk about the “next-door saint” so many of us love: Sister Mary Rinaldi. This autumn, as the leaves changed outside, our Development Office staff changed, too. This office, founded in 1989 by Sister Mary Rinaldi, who spent 36 years at the helm, was handed over to Sister Katie Flanagan.

Sister Mary grew up in the Salesian Family. Blessed Philip Rinaldi is the uncle of Sister Mary Rinaldi’s grandfather, as well as having been the Rector Major—Global Head Priest—of the Salesians. What a heritage, and what a way to begin life! Living with this big Salesian Family was familiar to her as one of seven children. I’m from a large family, too, and our similarities solidified our friendship from the get-go. (When I was doing vocations, Sister Mary and I used to joke that we should travel together and say, “Your money or your life.” We resisted the temptation!)

All superheroes have an origin story—here’s a little yarn Sister Mary shared, and I like to think it’s her origin story…

Early in her tenure at Camp Auxilium, Sister Mary saw a small house on the other side of the lake that needed a new roof. She pictured it becoming a cool hangout for the older campers. But her Provincial made clear that a new roof was nowhere in the camp budget. Sister Mary prayed to St. Joseph for his intervention—she wanted that hangout for the girls! Soon after, an old truck drove up, and the driver asked where the roof was that needed to be redone. Trusting that St. Joseph had answered her prayer, and without a word, Sister Mary pointed across the lake. The driver and his team got right to work pulling the old roof off the little house. Once this job

was well underway, one of the Salesian priests down the street called to ask whether anyone at Camp Auxilium had seen the roofers THEY were waiting for—and promptly discovered that the workers were at the wrong location. The roofing company, after conferring with the Salesian Sisters and the Salesian Fathers, elected to donate the roof replacement to Camp Auxilium. Sister Mary’s faith and confidence in St. Joseph were surely in evidence that day! This is how Sister Mary started a very effective career in fundraising…and friendraising.

In Sister Mary’s founding year in the Development Office, we both lived in North Haledon in a big new house. Her chore was putting away dishes when she wasn’t on the road. She didn’t really know where anything belonged—she traveled often, and the house was new. Still, when she was home, the dishes were put away quickly. We others often seemed to be walking in the direction of whatever was in her hand to be put away, so we would take it with us.

It wasn’t until the year was over that we compared notes and discovered—she still had no idea where anything went, because she didn’t ask where things went, she just asked us to put them away. Truly a master of persuasion, she was able to influence outcomes from a new roof built on faith, to a chore done in partnership with her Sisters, to a Development Office established and grown in faith, bringing us Salesians hordes of new friends we never imagined.

As an alumna of MHC Academy, Sister Mary discovered her tuition fee was charged as “gratis”—a free gift she has paid forward to so many others over the years. Asked why she’s been so successful in her work, Sister Mary had a memorable response: “It’s because I hate losing.” Sister Mary—you NEVER lost—you won big. And by extension, so did your Salesian Family. We love you.

The Life of the Party: Sister Domenica Di Peri Celebrates Her 100th Birthday!

One hundred years! No one loves a party more than Sister Domenica Di Peri. Surrounded by friends, family, and Salesian Sisters, Sister Domenica beamed with happiness under the glitter of a sparkler machine, popping balloons, and the serenade of her many fans. It was more than a birthday celebration; It was the joyful echo of a life poured out in love for God and others.

The celebrations began on October 3rd, when Sister Domenica visited Mary Help of Christians Academy, where her story first began. She and her sister Rosalie were placed in the care of the Salesian Sisters there after their mother’s passing when Domenica was only four years old. The Academy became the center of her life, and she later graduated in 1944 as a member of its first senior class. Returning to the school as an almostcentenarian, students applauded her as she entered the cafeteria. With her trademark humor, she handed out cupcakes provided by the PTG and encouraged the young women to enjoy every moment of high school. “I wish that all of you would also make it to 100 years,” she exclaimed, “It’s easy!”

The next day, on October 4, the celebration continued in St. Joseph Chapel, where a festive Mass was celebrated with longtime friend Father Patrick Angelucci, SDB, as the main celebrant. The chapel radiated with the smiles of Salesian Sisters, family, benefactors, and nine new aspirants beginning their journey in religious life. During the ceremony, Sister Domenica personally bestowed upon each aspirant the medal of Mary Help of Christians, formally welcoming them as they began their formation journey. The moment was deeply symbolic, with the oldest member of the Province embracing its youngest.

When asked what was most memorable for her about the weekend, Sister Domenica replied without hesitation, “Giving the medals to the new aspirants was the best part. It reminded me of the Sisters who guided me when I was young.”

Her reflection carried the weight of a century of gratitude. Raised by the Salesian Sisters, she found not

only a home but her vocation. “We seemed to live the life of the Sisters in miniature,” she once said. “I always felt a great desire to become a Salesian Sister, since our Sisters were always so cheerful and full of joy.”

That desire became her lifelong mission. Sister Domenica began as a first-grade teacher at St. Michael School in Paterson and later taught at Mary Help of Christians School in New York City. Her teaching ministry spanned schools in New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Louisiana. Known for her humor, warmth, and lively spirit, she has always been the heart of every gathering, bringing joy to her students, Sisters, and everyone who meets her.

Even in retirement, Sister Domenica continues to embody the Salesian spirit: joyful, generous, and deeply interested in others. Her 100th birthday was more than a milestone; it was a living witness to the vitality of the Salesian vocation. As the Sisters, students, and benefactors joined in prayer and song, the newest aspirants holding the hand of the oldest member of the province, one truth became clear: the story of Sister Domenica’s century is not just about years lived, but about a life shared, faith nurtured, and the charism of St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarello carried into the future.

At the end of the evening all gathered around to watch Sister Domenica cut her cake.

Many Paths, One Purpose: Nine Aspirants Begin the Discernment Journey

On Saturday, October 4th, nine young women from across North America took their first steps into discerning religious life with the Salesian Sisters, receiving the medal of Mary Help of Christians. They bring with them unique life experiences, a diversity of gifts, and one shared desire: to respond to Christ's gentle invitation to, “Come follow me.”

This initial year of aspirantate will immerse them in Salesian life and mission. They will live in community, take classes integral to their formation, deepen their prayer lives, and participate in apostolic experiences such as teaching catechism at several local parishes. May their openness to God’s call be a witness of hope for the Church, our Salesian Family, and young people everywhere.

A New Salesian Saint is Declared!

St. Maria Troncatti: Mother, Missionary, and Messenger of Hope

On October 19, 2025, Pope Leo canonized Sister Maria Benvenuta Troncatti, officially recognizing her as a saint and welcoming a new member of the Salesian Family into the Communion of Saints.

Born in 1883 in Còrteno Golgi, Brescia, Italy, Maria grew up in a large family, helping to graze goats at Alpe del Col d’Aprica. Intelligent, energetic, and responsible, she was allowed to make her First Communion at the age of just six years old.

In fifth grade, she first encountered the Salesians through the Salesian Bulletin, the official Salesian publication founded by St. John Bosco to promote the Salesian charism. Reading about the missionaries stirred in her a deep call to serve and become a missionary, too, one day. At fifteen, she joined the parish Daughters of Mary Association, deepening her devotion to the Blessed Mother.

At twenty-two, she began formation with the Salesian Sisters in Nizza Monferrato, making her first profession of religious vows in 1908. Although of fragile health, Maria was known for her prayerful, charitable, and sacrificial spirit.

In 1915, during World War I, she trained as a nurse to aid the wounded. That same year she and another sister nearly drowned in a flood. She later recounted that, after praying, “Mary Help of Christians, if you save us, I will become a missionary,” they were miraculously spared. From then on, her missionary vocation was sealed.

In 1922, after years of service and prayer, she was sent to Ecuador. There she established clinics for both native people and immigrants. After eleven years, she was sent to Sucúa, the heart of the Shuar people. Known as madrecita (“little mother”), she worked tirelessly to heal the sick, shelter abused women, rescue abandoned

infants and bring reconciliation between peoples. She taught the rosary, devotion to the Eucharist, and built bridges of peace between cultures.

Her initiatives included a hospital for the Shuar (1953), the Shuar Centers for the Defense of Indigenous Rights (1961), and a nurse training center with courses in family health, hygiene, and childcare (1962). In July 1969, the mission at Sucúa was destroyed by a suspicious fire, yet her work continued.

The following month, while traveling for retreat, her plane crashed shortly after takeoff. Sister Maria, aged eightysix, did not survive. At the news of her death, a rainbow appeared, and the people cried, “Our Mother, Sister Maria Troncatti, is dead.” Her works, however, endured.

Maria’s holiness was evident during her life, and reports of miraculous cures multiplied after her death. She was declared Venerable in 2008, Blessed in 2012, and canonized on October 19, 2025.

The miracle that opened the way for her canonization was the healing of Juwa Juank Kankua Bosco, a Shuar man who suffered a catastrophic head trauma in 2015. A stone fragment struck his skull, causing a comminuted fracture, loss of brain matter, diffuse axonal injury, and a coma that evolved into a vegetative state. Doctors expected death or permanent incapacity. His brother placed an image of Sister Maria on his chest and prayed for her intercession. Months later Juwa awoke, reporting dreams in which Sister Maria served as his nurse and promised recovery. Over time, he regained full health. In 2022, medical exams confirmed his brain had regenerated completely.

Still Saying “Yes”— Peace in the Journey Ahead

My Dear Partners in Giving,

The last time I wrote to you, I spoke of staying in tune with the God of surprises. I did not know just how true those words would be. I want to share with you some personal news. Please forgive the impersonal nature of this announcement. I would love to call each of you individually, but that is simply not possible for me right now. Over the summer, I went for a routine hearing exam to be fitted with hearing aids. That exam led to an MRI, and soon after, a consultation with a neurosurgeon. Without much delay, a biopsy was scheduled, and the result turned my life in a new direction: I was diagnosed with brain cancer, an inoperable glioblastoma.

At first, there was understandable fear and even some confusion. But as the days passed, a peaceful acceptance took root. I am currently undergoing treatment, blessed to be in the care of some of the best doctors in the country. I know that my life is in God’s hands, and His plan is unfolding for my good. One of the consolations God has granted me is to see the work of the Development Office in the capable hands of Sister Katie Flanagan. She brings joy, energy, and a great love for our mission. Truly, God’s timing in this transition is perfect.

I do not write to you seeking sympathy or even well-intentioned medical advice. Rather, I share this news because you are my family, and family shares both joys and sorrows. If I may ask one thing, it is for your prayers that I may continue to walk this path with serenity and faith. I am entrusting my care to the intercession of my grandfather’s uncle, Blessed Philip Rinaldi, SDB. I have included a prayer asking for his intercession below. I already feel your love and support, but as you can imagine I may not be able to answer phone calls or respond to letters right away. Please know that I carry you, and all the intentions you have entrusted to me, in my heart and in my daily prayer.

For over 61 years as a Salesian Sister, I have tried to give myself completely to God, to my Sisters, and to the young people entrusted to us. Now, I want to continue that same “yes” in a new way, with trust that I am in the arms of God. I rest in that truth with a grateful heart.

God, our Father, you called Blessed Philip Rinaldi to follow closely in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus, and thus to become an instrument of your love to all who approached him. By his prayers, keep us ever in your grace and love, in good health and peace. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

The Eucharist: “Source and Summit” of the Christian Life - Part 2

In the first part of our reflection on the Eucharist, we focused on the Real Presence of Jesus among us. In this reflection, we will look more deeply into the Eucharistic Celebration: The Mass, which is the Central Act of Worship for us as a Catholic Community and in our own personal life of faith.

Let us look at the basic elements of our Christian lives and of our prayer that are present within the “source and summit of the Christian life” (LG #11), that is, the Eucharistic Celebration.

We praise God who calls us to gather as a community of faith. We begin with a Gathering Song, the Introductory Rite, the Glory to God.

We acknowledge our need for God’s forgiveness and ask for God’s mercy in the Penitential Rite, during the Gloria, during the “Lamb of God” after the Sign of Peace and again right before receiving Communion.

The Liturgy of the Word invites us to listen to God’s Word and what it means for our lives. It is meant to nourish our minds and hearts with the scriptures, so that we can live our lives according to God’s Word and His plan for us. It’s important to be attentive to the words and gestures we use to help us receive the Word of God. Before the Gospel is proclaimed, we make a small Sign of the Cross on our forehead, on our lips, and over our heart. We ask God to open our mind to receive His word, to prepare our lips to proclaim His word with our lives, and to help us to keep His word in our hearts. The homily helps us to apply that Word to our own daily lives as we strive to live an ever more faithful Christian life.

The Profession of Faith invites us to declare what we believe as members of the one community of faith spread throughout the world. It unites us with our ancestors in the faith, in the same tradition that has been handed on through the centuries.

It’s important to be aware of what we are saying and to really make the “Amen” our own affirmation of what we believe. The Hebrew word: “amen” means ”truth” or “cer-

tainty”. When we use it, we are affirming our faith in the truth of and certainty of what we have just said or heard.

The General Intercessions or Prayers of the Faithful are supplications or petitions. We pray for the various needs of the Church, our world, our country, our community of faith…They unite us with the universal church and with all of humanity, in loving concern.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist begins with bringing up the gifts of bread and wine. We can unite our own needs, struggles, sufferings and those of others to the bread and wine that will become Jesus.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER: HEART OF THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

This part of the Liturgy and the time after receiving Holy Communion, really lend themselves to the contemplative aspect of our prayer.

The words of the Eucharistic Prayer and especially the moment of the Consecration invite us to realize what Jesus has done for us, and to prepare our hearts to receive Him sacramentally within us.

Praying the “Our Father” that Jesus himself taught us, focuses on our relationship with God and with one another. It is followed by the sign of peace, reminding us that Jesus told us that if we want to be His disciples, we must love and forgive one another as God loves and forgives us.

The moment of receiving Jesus is prepared for by again acknowledging our sinfulness and God’s mercy: “Lamb of God...”

When the Sacred Host is held in front of us, we are asked to affirm our faith in the Real Presence of Jesus

by responding “Amen”—We are saying; “Yes, I believe, I affirm that this bread is truly Jesus!” The sacred time of silence after Communion gives us the opportunity to listen to Him and speak to Him in our hearts.

At the end of the Celebration, we are sent out to continue living as disciples of Jesus, bringing what we have just heard, prayed, celebrated and strengthened, into our daily lives: We respond to that mission, saying: “Thanks be to God!”

As we conclude this brief overview of the Eucharistic Liturgy, we recall the words of Jesus: “I am with you always”. (Mt 28:20)

May we all experience the joy of a “full, conscious and active participation”(SC #14) in the Eucharistic Celebration, the “source and summit” of our Christian life!

Momentum at Mary Help of Christians Academy

Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon, NJ, is entering an exciting new chapter marked by two major developments that will strengthen the school’s mission and longterm sustainability. This academic year, MHC Academy welcomed Mrs. Melissa Ursich as the new Director of Annual Giving.

Melissa brings eight years of experience in development at St. Joseph Regional High School and will work closely with Sister Brittany Harrison, Director of Alumnae Relations for the Academy. Together, they will collaborate to strengthen donor engagement, build relationships, and expand the school’s fundraising capacity.

Reflecting on this addition, Head of School Sister Kelly Schuster shared, "We are confident that Melissa’s passion for mission-driven advancement will help keep the Academy a thriving environment where young women continue to grow academically, spiritually, and personally. The new office is located just upstairs

from the Salesian Sisters’ Development Office, so we anticipate many positive collaborative opportunities that will benefit the mission and draw on the wide experience of these professionals across both offices.”

“These developments reflect a forwardthinking commitment to the growth and sustainability of the Academy.”

In a second major advancement, the Board of Trustees has approved the creation of an Endowment for the Academy. This strategic initiative is designed to ensure the school’s financial stability and impact for generations to come. “This marks a critical milestone in our long-term development strategy,” Sister Kelly noted. “The Endowment will provide a stable, enduring foundation for benefactors who wish to invest in the legacy and future of the Academy. It creates a powerful opportunity to support our mission for years to come.”

These developments reflect a forward-thinking commitment to the growth and sustainability of the Academy. The school remains deeply grateful to all who support its mission to form women of faith, intellect, and service.

A Midpoint Marked by Hope and Mission

From August 11–15, 2025, Sisters from eight Provinces across North and Central America and the Caribbean gathered at the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Newton, New Jersey, for the CIMAC–NAC Triennial Verification. This mid-point meeting, held halfway between the worldwide gatherings of the Salesian Sisters held every six years, was an opportunity to check progress on commitments made three years ago.

With Superior General Mother Chiara Cazzuola and General Councilors present, the gathering combined prayer, reflection, and discernment with presentations on synodality, formation, the missions, and ecology. An excursion to New York City offered the participants an opportunity to enjoy each other's company and experience some American culture.

The Verification closed on the feast of the Assumption with a renewed call to live synodality in the daily mission and to keep alive Salesian zeal for the poorest youth. Enriched and renewed by these days, the Sisters departed for their home Provinces, carrying with them the fire of hope, the strength of communion, and the missionary zeal that animates the Salesian Family across the Americas and beyond.

A Villa Madonna Jubilee Pilgrimage

VILLA MADONNA SCHOOL, Tampa, FL — On a bright, sunny Friday, September 19th, the children, teachers, staff, and many parents from Villa Madonna School boarded eight buses “on pilgrimage” for the Holy Year to St. Jude the Apostle Cathedral in St. Petersburg, Florida, for a special Mass celebrating the Jubilee Year of Hope.

“The young people did exactly what Don Bosco would want: ‘Run, jump, pray, and play… but do not sin.’”

Many of the children had never been to their diocesan Cathedral and were in awe of the beauty of God’s house! This was especially significant since Villa Madonna's school Masses are usually celebrated in the Gym. What a difference!

Fr. Xavy Castro, diocesan Director of Vocations, celebrated the Liturgy and spoke to the young people about having no fear in following Jesus, because He is always there walking beside us. Some of the pastors of our neighboring parishes also concelebrated. Each child had previously written their Jubilee intentions which were then placed before the altar and prayed for during the special Mass.

At the conclusion of Mass, the Villa community boarded the buses, once again, to return to school for a special lunch and an afternoon of fun and games throughout the campus that combined their “Pilgrimage of Hope” with the school’s annual “Salesian Youth Rally.” The pre-K students had a beautiful “Jesus Day” prepared for them by Sister Janet Keller and the teachers.

At all our Salesian Schools, young people are immersed in our Salesian spirituality. And in the case of our pilgrimage day, the young people did exactly what Don Bosco would want: “Run, jump, pray, and play… but do not sin.”

ST. FRANCIS DESALES HIGH SCHOOL, Columbus, OH — In September, fifty-three students from St. Francis DeSales High School, Columbus, OH, joined together for Encounter, an evening fellowship event. At Encounter, they participated in student-led praise and worship, Adoration, kickball, and a cookout.

“Over the last several years, with the arrival of the Salesian Sisters in our school community, we have been blessed to learn even more about St. John Bosco and his teachings,” shared Karen Cofojohn, Director of Community Relations for the school. “Even infusing a game of kickball during an evening of praise and worship reflects Don Bosco’s thoughts on the Oratory model in the education of our young people by creating a playground where lasting friendships are formed.”

MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS ACADEMY, North Haledon, NJ On Thursday, September 25th, a group of students, parents, and Sisters attended the New Jersey March for Life in Trenton, NJ. The day began with Mass celebrated by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, with Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney as homilist. Participants then marched in front of the New Jersey State legislative buildings. Senior Emma Ibarbia said of the event, "I think it's really important to march for life because Jesus wants us to defend all the little children, and He wants us to be aware that everyone deserves the dignity of human life."

ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL, Hawthorne, NJ St. Anthony School took part in Hawthorne Day on September 27, held on the grounds of the Hawthorne Municipal Pool. Representing the school were Pastor Fr. Stephen Prisk, Principal Sr. Mary Jackson, parents and volunteers, and their beloved mascot—the Saint!

ACADEMY OF OUR LADY HIGH SCHOOL, Marrero, LA — Academy of Our Lady’s Varsity Volleyball Team packed their bags and traveled to New York on September 25, 2025, for an exciting matchup against their sister school, Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon, NJ. The match turned out to be both challenging and fun, strengthening the bond between the two schools. The Penguins took home the win with scores of 25-13, 25-7, and 25-8.

No matter the final score, the trip created memories that will last a lifetime. The trip was not just about the competition but more about the opportunity to grow in fellowship with each other and experience the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.

While in New York City, the team visited some of Manhattan most iconic landmarks, including Times Square, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and the Statue of Liberty. The team even enjoyed a wonderful performance of The Lion King on Broadway. The Penguins also joined their sister school to host a volleyball clinic, teaching middle school girls the fundamentals of the game.

Players reflected that the trip helped them grow closer as a team both on and off the court. Fellow teammate Kiley Taylor said, “It was a well-needed break from reality. Being in a place I’ve never been helped me admire the things around me, and it brought me closer with my teammates.” (Written by student Delani Robinson)

IMMACULATA-LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL , Miami, FL — Seniors in Marine Science dove into a Shark Tagging & Tracking Simulation Lab they prepared for their upcoming shark tagging adventure with the University of Miami. Students practiced the same skills used by marine scientists, taking measurements and collecting samples. They also explored real shark data using the OCEARCH tracking app, gaining firsthand insight into shark behavior and ocean research.

ILS Royal Nicholas Quiroz recently completed his Eagle Scout Troop project by thoughtfully landscaping the Shrine of Our Lady in the courtyard. Through his vision, dedication, and many hours of hard work, he transformed the area into a welcoming and prayerful space for the Immaculata-La Salle community. His efforts not only enhanced the beauty of the shrine but also reflect a lasting gift of service and devotion that will be appreciated by students, faculty, and visitors for years to come.

ST. THERESA SCHOOL, Kenilworth, NJ — On September 12, 2025, Sister Marisa De Rose, Sister Jessica Castillo, a parent chaperone and twenty-five 6th and 7th graders from St. Theresa School participated in the Archdiocese of Newark's Mass for the Jubilee for Catholic Schools.

The day featured Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Drawing nearly 2,000 students, faculty, and staff from across the diocese, many students had never seen the cathedral before. One seventh grader, Mia Leon, remarked, "This church is majestic! Look at the stained-glass windows!"

The liturgy, which began at 10:00 AM, was presided over by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, who spoke in his homily about the lasting impact of Catholic education, calling on students to embrace their role in spreading the message of Christ in today’s world.

The celebration was marked by a strong sense of unity and faith underscoring the theme of the Jubilee: that each school and student is part of a greater mission within the Catholic Church. As the students departed, many carried not just memories of the beautiful basilica but also a renewed connection to their faith and a deeper understanding of their place within the Church.

Pumpkin Spice Spirituality

How many pumpkin spice things have you seen so far? This time of year seems taken over by pumpkin spice everything. Among the oddest items I’ve come across are pumpkin spice deodorant, pumpkin spice Spam, pumpkin spice Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, and even pumpkin spice body wipes (really?). Pumpkin spice is a popular marketing and sales tactic because it evokes nostalgia, and nostalgia is a strong seller.

Spanning both Halloween and Thanksgiving, the pumpkin spice season seems to start earlier each year, but I welcome it. Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and clove—the key flavors of pumpkin spice—can take a bland tea or coffee and transform it into a vibrant sensory experience. So I say, bring on the pumpkin spice lattes!

“Patience, charity, humility, generosity, and joy give flavor to our faith, making us people who don’t just believe, but live what we profess.”

In the 12th century, St. Hildegard of Bingen wrote about the health benefits of nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and clove. Some modern articles even credit her with “inventing” pumpkin spice (though that’s a stretch!). While she was indeed a skilled herbalist who could probably bake a heavenly pumpkin pie, what endures are not her recipes but her virtues. And that’s the point.

Virtues are the true “spices” of the spiritual life. Patience, charity, humility, generosity, and joy give flavor to our faith, making us people who don’t just believe, but live what we profess.

Some people approach religion like it’s an insurance policy—paying in once a week by going to Mass as though checking off a box, hoping that, in the end, their accumulated attendance will outweigh their sins. But that’s a bland faith. No seasoning. No cultivated virtue.

Our baptism calls us to holiness, to belonging, and to action. Living the Christian life requires intention. It

asks us to cultivate the “spices” of virtue so that our relationship with God makes our lives more vibrant, not dull.

God doesn’t want insurance policy Christians. He wants disciples whose faith has flavor—disciples resilient enough to withstand trials because they’ve seasoned their lives with prayer, gratitude, generosity, and community. Mass should not be a chore but an act of humility and love. Even when faith feels dry or heavy, that is precisely the moment to “spice things up”: serve generously, study the Word more deeply, or share burdens with a trusted friend. Christianity is not meant to be lived alone.

Autumn teaches us that the world can be transformed with just a touch of color, a bit of spice, and the hope of something more. Let’s not settle for bland faith when God offers us abundance. This season, may our spiritual lives be seasoned richly—with gratitude, generosity, and the joy that points the world toward Christ.

So as the air cools and the days shorten, let us commit to one concrete way of “spicing up” our faith this season. Volunteer. Forgive. Pray more deeply. Give more generously. Let our lives be the warm aroma of Christ that draws others closer to Him.
