MATCH REPORT

Wellingborough Town (H) 25 Aug

Pitching In Northern Premier League Midland Division

ST NEOTS TOWN 1

WELLINGBOROUGH TOWN 0

St Neots made it three unbeaten matches in ten days with their first home league victory in their new league surroundings. The last league meetings of these two sides two seasons ago had seen their Northamptonshire visitors complete a double on their way to the- league title and promotion to Step Four so this was revenge for the Saints – and well-deserved revenge. Three times St Neots were denied goals by the visitors’ woodwork, but they persevered and a single goal from Harvey Williams – his second in consecutive matches – was enough for his side to take full points and lift the Saints into the top half of the league table after a testing start to the season. With Kieran Barnes not fully fit after Saturday’s visit to Coleshill, Jessi Obeng was handed his first senior start against his former club, and defender Charlie Bowen returned to the side after injury with skipper Rob Parker moving into midfield and Andrian Ankrah starting on the substitutes bench.

St Neots got off to a stunning start with Harvey Williams seeing a snapshot in the first minute turned away for a corner. Four minutes later the same St Neots player set up Connor Furlong whose headed effort was deflected for another corner and then debut boy Jessi Obeng sent a well-timed volley into the grateful arms of the visiting goalkeeper. Then after ten minutes from a Sam Wills corner, a Rhys Thorpe effort rebounded from a post with the visiting keeper beaten. The visitors had they first significant sight of goal after ten minutes when former Saints striker Tremaine Charles shot into the side netting from a narrow angle and after these opening exchanges the match settled with St Neots dominating the attacking play. In a quick Wellingborough counterattack Taylor Franklin shot wide after outpacing the home defence and then seven minutes before the break Charie Bowen headed narrowly wide from a Sam Willis corner. The lively Furlong seemed to have the better of his marker and he twice set up Thorpe who shot wide – first with his left foot and then with his head. In the final minute of the first half Obeng produced a turn of speed to get past his marker to set up Furlong who became the second St Neots player to see his effort rebound from the woodwork.

MATCH REPORT

Wellingborough Town (H) 25 Aug

Wellingborough began the second half well with home keeper James Goff happy to push away a fierce finish from Jordan Crawford, and then Charles found a rush of speed but shot high over the home crossbar. After 52 minutes St Neots produced what was to prove the winning goal when a shot from Obeng was not cleared and Harvey Williams picked up the loose ball to fire home from ten yards. In their next attack the home side had Charles again using his pace to create an opening, but his finish was well over the bar. The Wellingborough rally continued with Franklin shooting across the face of goal after neat approach play by Jordan O’Brien and then Murphy Culkin had a shot pushed away at full stretch by the visiting goalkeeper. St Neots sent on Andrian Ankrah for the limping Obeng and just past the hour Furlong saw yet a third St Neots’ effort rebound from the woodwork. As expected, the visitors staged a late rally in search of an equaliser and in a break against the run of play Thorpe outpaced his marker to bring a save from the visiting keeper. There was late concern for St Neots when Harvey Williams was helped off with a knee injury and after no less than eleven minutes added time St Neots held out to take all three points.

Isuzu FA Trophy First Round Qualifying

SPORTING CLUB INKBERROW 0 ST NEOTS TOWN 0 (Inkberrow won 3-1 on penalties)

Home keeper Gabriel Bajrami was the matchwinner for the home side as he saved the first three penalty kicks taken by the visiting side in the deciding shoot-out after a goalless ninety minutes plus added time. Saints Manager Cameron Mawer was sent off six minutes from time in a controversial moment of mistaken identity that he will appeal against. It was a regrettable incident after a very disappointing Cup tie influenced to a large extent by the swirling wind which neither side were able to master. Inkberrow were making their first ever appearance in an FA Trophy tie following their elevation to Step Four of the National League system for the first time in their history. Neither side played well with respective goalkeepers never under any real pressure until the penalty shoot-out decider, although Saints custodian James Goff won the man of the match award for some important saves, and the home side will be happy to have announced their arrival in the competition with a first-time victory. St Neots lined up without their regular wide front men, Connor Furlong who was unavailable and Harvey Williams who was not fully fit and started on the bench. Back into the starting line-up came Kieran Barnes, with Jamal Obeng moving to a wide berth, and Brandon Jessop was given his first start on the opposite flank.

From the start it was obvious that the swirling wind was going to be a problem for the two sides, but St Neots made a bright start with Brandon Jessop breaking clear in the third minute but brought down by William Moore from behind to earn the home defender an early caution. However, as the match settled the home side were quickly in control with James Goff saving bravely at the feet of Jack Tolley and he then saved at full stretch from Noah Rubio. Jessop had a shot saved after neat play by Kieran Barnes but Tolley squandered Inkberrow’s best first half chance firing wide after a good team move. Just before half time Charlie Bowen joined the visiting attack but shot wide following a Barnes corner. The two sides then went to the break with Inkberrow having enjoyed the greater share of attacking play.

Sporting Club Inkberrow (A) 06 Sep

The second half began in familiar fashion with Inkberrow in the ascendancy. Substitute Nigel Hinkulow broke clear but Jesse Obeng back in a defensive role did well to clear and then Jay Pugsley shot wide following a corner. In the 55 minute Goff had to leave his area to clear when his defence had been breached but St Neots hit back with Obeng heading over from a Murphy Culkin cross. St Neots sent on substitute Michael Amaeshike for the limping Bowen and replaced Jessop with Harvey Williams pepping up their attack. Rhys Thorpe fired wide after neat play by Christian Tavernier and then Harvey Henderson did well to deflect a fierce short wide for a corner. The sending off of the St Neots Manager followed just before the end of the 90 minutes and St Neots looked happy to have survived to earn that penalty decider. th

However, the first three St Neots spot takers all saw their efforts well saved by the inspired home custodian and although Goff saved two efforts from home players Nathan Benson comfortably fired home the fifth Inkberrow spot kick to earn his sides; place in the next round.

St Neots Town: Goff, Willis, Culkin, Tavernier, Henderson, Bowen, Jessop, Parker, Thorpe, Barnes, Obeng

St Neots skipper Robbie Parker was sent off deep into added time when he picked up second yellow card as his side were beaten at Shepshed. It was back down to earth for Cameron Mawer’s side as their mini three league match unbeaten run was ended. The final score was a mirror image of St Neots only other visit to Shepshed three years ago. Outplayed in the first half St Neots recovered well after the break but the home side always had the edge after an added time goal at the end of the first half set them up for this victory. Murphy Culkin was unavailable for this trip, but injured trio Connor Furlong, Harvey Williams and Michael Amaeshike returned to the side with Jesse Obeng and Brandon Jessop back on the substitutes bench. Versatile skipper Robbie Parker slotted in at full back for Culkin – his third starting position so far this season.

The opening twenty minutes was end-to-end with the home side enjoying the greater share of play although Connor Furlong did break clear once to test home keeper Dan Wallis. The home side saw penalty appeals waved away when Jack Rogers tumbled in the penalty area, and they were encouraged by an inspired performance by wide player Jude Collins whose trickery and pace gave Sam Willis a testing time. An opportunistic free kick by St Neots keeper James Goff who spotted the home custodian off his line gave Shepshed an anxious moment and then Charlie Bowen headed narrowly over the bar from a Parker throw. However, after 33 minutes St Neots went behind when a Collins free kick was headed back across goal where the poorly marked Dylan Reason netted from close range. The hammer blow for the visiting side came in first half added time when the impressive Jude Collins netted with a well-placed volley.

St Neots came out to make a positive start to the second half. Kieran Barnes saw a shot blocked after good play by Sam Willis and a Parker free kick was pushed onto the bar by home keeper Wallis. St Neots were rewarded for their bright start to the half when Furlong was upended by Ben Bayliss and Robbie Parker levelled the scores from the penalty spot after 58 minutes. However, this setback seemed to spur the home side and four minutes after the visitors’ goal Goff had to throw himself full length to deny Collins. After 66 minutes the home side reinstated their two goals’ advantage when from a Collins cross Jesse Friend netted from the edge of the penalty area.

The visitors responded with Bowen seeing a header cleared off the line from a Willis corner and then St Neots attempted to vary their approach with Andi Ankrah replacing Amaeshike in midfield. From another Willis corner Harvey Henderson forced a good save from the home goalkeeper and then a series of substitutions by both sides saw the play become fragmented. Play did move from end to end without a positive finish and in injury time Parker was sent off when he collected a second yellow card. It was a disappointing end to a testing evening.

St Neots Town: Goff, Willis, Parker, Tavernier, Henderson, Bowen, Furlong, Amaeshike, Thorpe, Barnes, Williams

Subs: Ankrah (for Amaeshike 73 mins), Obeng (for Williams 82 mins), Sterling (for Thorpe 90+2 mins), Francis, and Jessop.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

A home league match eight years ago today – 13 September 2017

Southern League Premier Division

ST NEOTS TOWN 5

DORCHESTER TOWN 0

Without a league or cup victory in their first six outings this season the St Neots players had been warned by Manager Matt Clements to expect significant changes in personnel unless their performances and results improved significantly and their response was extremely positive, delivering the first clean sheet of the season, their first win, and the sides’ first Southern League victory by five or more goals since December 2013.Visitors’ Dorchester have had a similar start to their season making this a ‘must win’ game for both. St Neots quest was aided by having to play against ten men in the second half after Ollie Griggs had picked up a straight red card for a reckless challenge and in that second 45 minutes there was only one team in it. Even second half injuries to both St Neots central defenders Liam McDevitt and the August Player of the Month Taylor Parr could not take the gilt off the performance and result, and the points lifted St Neots out of the bottom four places in the table up to seventeenth. Again, there were several team and tactical changes with Peterborough United youth loanee goalkeeper coming into the side for the injured Mike Emery, and Tom Wood, Micky Hyem and Lee Clarke on the substitutes bench replaced by Johnny Herd, Dylan Williams and Kyron Wiltshire.

Understandably both sides were reluctant to give much away in the early stages although St Neots produced the perfect start when from a Ryan Horne cross to the far post, full back Johnny Herd arrived in the penalty area to score only his second St Neots goal. The visitors created little although Luke Winsper shot wide and from a Dom Panesar cross Gary Bowles headed their best chance over the bar. In a quick break St Neots were caught square at the back and a snap-shot by Billy Lowes rebounded from a post but St Neots were creating their own openings with a shot from the lively Horne rebounding from the keepers’ body and Taylor Parr heading wide from a Dylan Williams free kick. The first real test for Josh Tibbetts was when he had to rush from his line to rob Jordan Storey and then just before the break there was the sending off that proved to be a game-changer.Prior to that the Referee had booked two visiting players for fouls but the reckless challenge by Ollie Griggs resulted in his instant dismissal.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Sept 2017 - Dorchester Town (H)

Another flare up early in the second half saw Jordan Storey and Scott Sinclair both booked but thankfully after that the match settled down with St Neots dictating. Visiting keeper Chris Weale did well to keep out an effort by Herd and as St Neots superior possession gradually told, trickery by Dion Sembie-Ferris after 65 minutes gave him the space to test Weale who could only parry his effort into the path of Scott Sinclair who tapped home. Within two minutes it was 3-0 as a long throw by Herd was headed on by Parr and Dion Sembie-Ferris stole in at the far post for his second St Neots goal in five matches. Now all Dorchester could do was hang on to try to salvage pride but the tide was relentless and after 73 minutes Dylan Williams turned in the penalty area to lob a well-placed shot beyond the reach of Weale. Kyle Egan cleared off the line from Williams with his keeper beaten and then after 79 minutes the speedy Williams was hauled down in the penalty area by Ross Carmichael and he got to his feet to beat Weale from the penalty spot to complete the 5-0 victory.

Both sides utilized their maximum allocation of three substitutes with St Neots finishing up with substitute Tom Wood and full back Jack Bradshaw at the heart of a defence that never looked likely to yield their clean sheet. It was St Neots’ fourth consecutive home victory over Dorchester in which they have scored 15 goals.
