Fifth
From Fr. Anthony’s Desk
KNOWN BY LOVE
Fifth Sunday of Easter
Tis Sunday’s Gospel (John 13:31-33a, 34-35) takes us back to Jerusalem, in the Upper Room, on the eve of Christ’s Passion. In these intimate and solemn moments, Our Lord gives His Apostles - and all of us - a command that is both simple and staggering: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” (John 13:34)
1. “Now is the Son of Man glorifed…” (John 13:31)
• At frst glance, it seems strange that Jesus speaks of glory just a few hours before His death on the cross. But herein lies a profound Christian paradox: the moment of greatest humiliation becomes the moment of greatest glory. Te Cross is not a defeat—it is a throne.
• St. John Paul II once said, “Te glory of God is man fully alive, and life for man consists in seeing God revealed in the sufering Christ.” (General Audience, 11/8/2000) Te Cross reveals the glory of God precisely because it shows how far Divine Love is willing to go.
• Let us not run from the Cross in our lives. In every trial, every sacrifce borne for another, every wound we carry faithfully - there, Christ is glorifed.
2. “As I have loved you…” (John 13:34)
• Tis is no ordinary love Jesus commands - it is love modeled on His own. And how did He love us? By laying down His life.
• Pope Francis reminded us, “Love is the Christian’s identity card. Only by loving can we be recognized as His disciples.” (Daily Homily, 5/7/2013)
• Tis means we are called to love in action. Love the difcult family member. Forgive the old grudge. Be patient with the annoying co-worker. In all these hidden ways, we become like Christ.
• St. Teresa of Calcutta put it bluntly: “Love, to be real, must cost—it must hurt—it must empty us of self.” (In the Heart of the World, New York 2010, 45) A comfortable love is not very much Christlike!
3. “Tis is how all will know that you are my disciples…” (John 13:35)
• Te early Church grew not by clever arguments, but by radical love. Te early Church Father Tertullian (AD 155–220) recorded how pagans were struck by the genuine charity among Christians: “See how they love one another!” (Apologeticus, 39)
• We are living in a world weary of division, scandal, and cynicism. What a powerful sign it would be if our parish community here at St. Mary’s became known for its patience, its generosity, and its willingness to walk with the sufering.
• As Pope Benedict XVI wrote, “A Christian knows when it is time to speak of God and when it is better to say nothing and to let love alone speak.” (Deus Caritas Est, #31c)
• Let love speak in our homes, in our pews, in our community. Let us be known not just for attending Mass, but for carrying Christ into the world with so much love and joy.
In this spirit of this Gospel love, how ftting it is that last Tursday, May 8 – Feast of Our Lady Queen of the Rosary of Pompeii, our Church has welcomed a new Successor of St. Peter, Pope Leo XIV. His election is a moment of grace and renewal, and his very frst words as Pope echoed the heart of today’s Gospel: a call to be “a Church that always seeks peace, which always seeks charity, which always seeks to be close, especially to those who sufer.” May Pope Leo’s ministry strengthen each of us in our resolve to live the command of the Lord not just as an ideal, but as the very path to holiness.
Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel are not merely a suggestion - they are a commandment, and a way of life. In a society often marked by self-interest and indiference, may we dare to live the radical love of Jesus:
• a love that forgives,
• a love that serves, and
• a love that bears witness to the Cross.
In Christ’s Heart, Fr. Anthony

- Feast of Our Lady Mary Help of Christians
Our Lady Help of Christians is one of many titles given to Mary. It specifcally refers to Mary as the intercessor on our behalf for us to God. Since the early 1500’s when the Ottoman Empire planned to invade Europe, Pope Pius V asked Catholics to pray for Mary’s intercession in defeating the Turks. After the successful battle, Pope Pius V proclaimed Mary to be “Our Lady Help of Christians.” Our Lady Help of Christians is the patroness of the Salesians, the community founded by St. John Bosco.
Let us pray: Mary, Help of Christians, you helped defend the Christian faith over the course of history. Free me from infdelity or faithlessness and give me perseverance and strength to live an authentically Christian life in the world today. Mary, pray for me and ask God to grant the intentions I hold within my heart. Amen.

Praise the Lord with Music
Rejoice, you righteous, in the Lord; praise from the upright is ftting. Give thanks to the Lord on the harp; on the ten-stringed lyre ofer praise. Sing to him a new song; skillfully play with joyful chant. For the Lord’s word is upright; all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right. Te earth is full of the mercy of the Lord. — Psalm 33:1-5
My heart is steadfast, God, my heart is steadfast. I will sing and chant praise. Awake, my soul; awake, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn.
I will praise you among the peoples, Lord; I will chant your praise among the nations. For your mercy towers to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Exalt yourself over the heavens, God; may your glory appear above all the earth. — Psalm 57:8-12
It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, Most High, To proclaim your love at daybreak, your faithfulness in the night, With the ten-stringed harp, with melody upon the lyre. For you make me jubilant, Lord, by your deeds; at the works of your hands I shout for joy. — Psalm 92:2-5
Respect Life Ministry
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Closing Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church
Without a foundational, practical formation, it is difcult for our consciences to guide us well in concrete situations. As Catholics, we have the immense gift of the teaching authority of the Catholic Church and can turn to it for help forming our consciences. For example, learning about Christian moral principles, reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church, or researching what the Church says about a challenging teaching will help us grow in knowledge of the truth.
— USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, “Understanding Conscience”
St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry will hold its next regular meeting on Wednesday, May 21st, at 7:00 PM, in the St. John Paul II Room of the Parish Center. Please join us — and bring a friend — as we explore ways to promote our mission at St. Mary’s:
Our mission is to build a civilization of love and life which upholds the dignity and inviolability of all innocent human life, seeks objective moral Truth, embraces the value of redemptive sufering, and yearns for the fullness of life in eternal communion with God the Creator.
