Readings and Questions for Faith Sharing on the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I: Isaiah 66:10-14c

As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.

Reading II: Galatians 6:14-18

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel: Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’

Question for Adults:

How can I do more to make the kingdom of God visible in this world?

Question for Children:

When I pray, do I talk to Jesus about what is going on in my life? Do I listen to His words to me?

On the cover: St. Mary’s stained glass window located next to the automatic door on the convent side of the church depicts St. Peter receiving the keys of the kingdom from Jesus.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

As Father Rooney and I introduce ourselves this week, our first Sunday at Saint Mary comes on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

When Father Rafal noticed that, he joked with me, “Which of you is Peter and who is Paul?”

To which I replied, “As Paul is from of old depicted as bald, I guess that’s me!”

One of the reasons I like that Peter and Paul are celebrated together is what it says about proclaiming the Gospel. Those two great Apostles had very different gifts and personalities, yet both were able to use them to convert the world. They were both martyred in Rome by Nero around 65 A.D. as that wicked pagan emperor attempted to make Christians the scapegoats for the fire that had burned down the heart of the capitol and also conveniently made room for his golden palace.

They are honored together to remind us that there isn’t just one type of way to spread the faith; each of us can do it in whatever manner we are able.

Pope Benedict XVI famously said about them, “Peter and Paul are together because they are one in the love of the Lord.”

As Father Rooney and I now join the other clergy, staff, and volunteers who make Saint Mary so vibrant a parish, it is my prayer that, whatever gifts or talents we may bring, may compliment those of the rest of the team, helping us to be one in the love of the Lord, as were the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

With you, in service of Jesus through Mary, Fr. Tom

The Parish Office will be closed Friday, July 4th, in observance of Independence Day.

J Stewards of God’s Gifts

When you read the Gospels and the Acts, you will notice the Primacy of Peter.

Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Service: Like Sts. Peter and Paul, we too are called to spread the Good News to all we come across. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to guide us and give us wisdom and courage to be strong disciples.

Commemorating Religious Freedom Week

“O God our Creator… we ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.”

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Summer Adoration Prayers

Breath of Summer

Creator God, who breathed this world into being, who is discernible within the harmony of nature, the perfection of a butterfly’s wing, the grandeur of a mountain range, the soaring eagle and humming bird, thank you for this world which you have created. Thank you for summer sun, which reminds us that your creative breath is still alive and active. Thank you for the warmth of your love, sustaining this world

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Closing Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

A Summer Blessing

May you walk with God

This summer

In whatever you do Wherever you go

Walking with God means...

Walking with honesty And with courage, Walking with love And respect And concern for the feelings of others

May you talk to God

This summer And every day and In every situation

Talking with God means... Praying words of praise

For the beauty of creation

Saying prayers of thanks

For friends and good times, Asking God’s help

In all your decisions

Expressing sorrow When you have failed

May you talk with God Every day. Amen.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Recognize Jesus in the Needy

In today’s Gospel, Peter recognizes Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God. On this rock of faith, says Christ, He will build his Church. In the month of June, you recognized Jesus in his poor. Your gifts of faith enabled the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help families by providing food, gift and paying utility and rent bills.

THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS TUESDAY, JULY 1ST, at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Want to grow in holiness, but too busy?

Want to transform your spiritual life, but don't have time?

Looking for the quick and easy way to grow closer to Christ and have more meaning in your life?

Let Our Blessed Mother show you the way!

SAINTS JOHN PAUL II AND MOTHER TERESA KNEW THAT THE QUICKEST WAY TO GROW CLOSE TO JESUS CHRIST IS THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR BLESSED MOTHER, MARY. MARY LEADS US TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS. !

If l ki f i l b i i ll d d l d l i

If you are looking for a simple way to be spiritually renewed, develop a deeper relationship with Our Merciful Savior through His Blessed Mother, and grow in holiness, consider joining us for a retreat in preparation for Consecration to Jesus through Mary.

St. Mary’s Good Samaritan House is considering conducting a consecration retreat for college students home for summer and for high school students. If you would be interested in joining us in this retreat, please reach out to Kathleen Kosciusko (kkosciusko@stmary.ws). If there are enough interested young adults, we will begin the retreat mid June. The schedule would be finalized once we have a listing of attendees.

Participants will use the book 33 Days to Morning Group Retreat and Study Guide, by Father Michael Gaitley, to guide us through the retreat. Participants commit to 10-15 minutes a day for spiritual readings and prayerful ponderings at home. Father Michael’s book, based on the writings of St. Louis de Montfort and updated to include the modern perspective of Saints John Paul II, Mother Teresa, and Maximillian Kolbe, offers readers a new dawn and a fresh start for one’s spiritual journey.

Our retreat will culminate on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (If you will leave town prior to August 15, you have the option of consecrating on your own at your own school.) For those able to attend this Consecration Day Ceremony, we will make our consecration at St. Mary’s after the 9:00 AM Mass. Participants do not have to be present at the Ceremony to consecrate.

COST: $20 includes the book and materials

CONSECRATION DAY: August 15, 2025

To register or for more information, please scan the QR Code in the top right corner or visit tinyurl.com/StMarysYAConsecration

In addition to the 10-15 minutes per day of reading, participants will meet weekly for 1.5 hours (days and times TBD) to ask questions, share insights and watch informative videos by Father Michael Gaitley. The group sessions will provide encouragement and support during the journey. These are not necessarily required but beneficial.

CHURCH OF SAINT MARY

Dear Parents:

The ministry of St. Mary’s Religious Education Program centers on the growth and development of a lived experience of our Catholic faith. We assist the parents of baptized children as they carry out their responsibility to raise their children in the Catholic faith.

Our catechetical programs do the vital work of formal religious education. Through classes, special events, sacramental liturgies, adoration and prayer, students and their families are brought to a deeper understanding of our Catholic faith.

If you can believe it, it is already time to register your child/children for the 2025/2026 Catholic Formation year! To register now, simply scan the QR Code or visit saintmarysmanhasset.org/registration. The “Register Here” button is at the bottom of the page (follow all prompts to complete registration).

We look forward to seeing our students in the fall!

Have a blessed summer, Mrs. Granieri

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

High School Baccalaureate Mass & Banquet

On Thursday, May 22, the Class of 2025 gathered with family, administrators, and faculty to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist for one last time together in the Church of Saint Mary. Following the Baccalaureate Mass, the Senior Banquet took place in Wiest Hall to honor the students’ remarkable accomplishments. Graduates received recognition for various awards, including a Congressional Letter of Merit and scholar-athlete designations. Several soon-to-be graduates presented moving messages to the community, reflecting on their growth and achievements.

Ryan Werner ’25 shared a poignant message remembering his formation at St. Mary’s. He spoke about the points that contributed to his success as a student-athlete and the eventual leadership role as captain of the soccer team, which brought significant responsibility and inspired him to be a relatable and dependable teammate. “Playing sports here taught me many things. It taught me confidence, resilience, and how to lose and bounce back stronger. But most importantly, my involvement in sports has taught me about leadership.”

Ryan reminisced about being a 14-year-old who was shy and somewhat intimidated at Freshman Camp but ultimately celebrated, with a smile lighting up the room as he stood in front of his parents, classmates, their families, faculty, and administrators, sharing from the podium that his development in character and confidence didn’t come overnight. Still, he knew his time at St. Mary’s was key to each step in his journey. “My decision to go to Saint Mary’s and the impact that it made on me stretched beyond my education. It has made me lifelong friends, given me lifechanging opportunities, allowed me to get out of my comfort

zone, and granted me the characteristics and traits of a leader, which will be applied in every single aspect of my life from here on out. And for that, I thank you, Saint Mary’s.”

Principal Gerard Buckley said, “Ryan’s statement, as well as the other students who spoke so beautifully this evening at our Banquet, clearly demonstrated how fully formed each of them is before heading out into the world after completing their studies at St. Mary’s.”

Whether excelling in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, or serving as Senior Shepherds, it is evident that the Class of 2025 will leave our campus walking in the footsteps of our Catholic faith, striving to serve others and inspiring those who follow in their path. We can be assured that our faculty and staff members, who have tirelessly supported and guided these graduates, have positively impacted their educational journeys in ways that will be cherished and remembered for years to come.

Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 9, 2025.

The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 PM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.

The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, child, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.
