Readings and Questions for Faith Sharing on the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23

All things are vanity!

Reading II: Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11

Tink of what is above, not of what is on earth.

Gospel: Luke 12:13-21

Tus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.

Question for Adults:

Am I rich in those things that matter to God?

Question for Children: Do I put God frst in everything in my life?

On the cover: St. Mary’s stained glass window (octagonal, facing the convent) depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary as a child with her mother, St. Anne.

Dear parishioners,

I was told that an early bishop of Brooklyn, (of which our diocese had once been a part) when creating a new parish, would try to select parish patron saint names that had feastdays in the summer. He saw this as a way of giving the new parish a fund raiser as the weather would permit outdoor festivals and picnics.

One parish of our diocese for whom that may be true is Saints Joachim and Anne in Cedarhurst. Although the Catholic population of that area is not very large now, when it was founded over a century ago, the Five Towns and the Rockaways were summer getaways for people living in New York City.

Te feastday for Saints Joachim and Anne was just this past Saturday (July 26th). Being the traditional parents of our parish’s heavenly patroness, the Glorious Ever Virgin Mary, their holiness has been assumed and many legends have been drawn up about them.

As Our Lady’s parents, they would also then be the grandparents of the Lord. For this reason, they are the patron saints of Grandparents.

As a priest, I often hear stories from people about the important role their grandparents played in their faith life. One I heard recently from a parishioner was about how her grandmother taught her how to pray the Rosary and, when she had mastered it, gave her a beautiful set of beads which became her most fond treasure.

If your grandparent was that kind of an infuence on you, this weekend either thank them or thank God for them.

If you have been blessed to become “grand,” return that blessing by using that special place you hold in the hearts of your little ones (like the woman mentioned above) to help them grow closer to God.

Saints Joachim and Anne, loving and holy parents of our Patroness, pray for us!

With you, in the service of Jesus through Mary,

Fr. Tom

J Stewards of God’s Gifts

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us about the importance of prayer. He also teaches us the “Our Father.”

Te collection for Sunday, July 20, 2025 amounted to $22,591.00.

Te collection for Sunday, July 21, 2024 amounted to $22,233.00.

Respect Life Ministry

Advance Medical Directives: Planning for Your Future

Read the full version at respectlife.org/ advance-directives.

Human life is good and to be protected. All medical decisions ought to reflect this core belief. Yet some medical and legal documents used to define a patient’s future care can be harmful. No matter how wellcrafted, they can’t predict all the possible scenarios and best courses of action. In each set of circumstances, we need to judge whether a given treatment will provide real benefit to the patient, without causing harm or disproportionate burdens. The safest option is to designate a health care agent to make decisions if you become incapable of doing so. It’s best to appoint a responsible, trustworthy person who understands and shares your Catholic values, and can apply them when the need arises.

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 9, 2025.

The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 PM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.
