Returning to the Shore to fnd the Shepherd

Tis Sunday’s Gospel (John 21:1-19) brings us to the Sea of Tiberias, in Galilee, where the Risen Lord appears once again to His disciples.

It’s a tender and powerful moment—a miraculous catch, a charcoal fre, a shared meal, and then, that piercing, personal conversation between Jesus and Peter.

In light of today’s Gospel Reading and the recent passing of Pope Francis, our beloved Holy Father, three refections rise in my heart:

1. Te Lord Comes to Us Again

• Te disciples had returned to what they knew—fshing. Perhaps still unsure of their next steps after the Resurrection, they went back to familiar waters. Yet Jesus doesn’t leave them there. He meets them, not with rebuke, but with abundance and hospitality. He provides.

• We too often return to old habits or places of comfort when the path ahead seems unclear. Yet the Risen Christ comes to us again and again—not only to redirect our course, but to draw us deeper into relationship with Him.

• Pope Francis so often reminded the Church of this very truth: “God draws near to our lives, he is moved to compassion because of the fate of wounded humanity and comes to break down every barrier that prevents us from being in relationship with him, with others, and with ourselves.” (Angelus Address, 2/14/ 2021)

2. “Do You Love Me?” – A Personal Call

• Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Each time, the question is more than repetition—it is restoration. After Peter’s three denials, Jesus ofers him three opportunities: to love again, to choose again, to follow again.

• Te Church is built not on Peter’s perfection, but on his love for Jesus. Tis should comfort us, too, in our own moments of weakness. We are not disqualifed by failure. What matters is our willingness to say again and again: “Lord, you know that I love you.”

• Pope Francis embodied this call to love. His papacy was marked, not by grandeur, but by the simplicity and sincerity of a shepherd who continually pointed us to Jesus. Even in sufering, he showed us how to respond to Christ’s call with humility and courage.

3. A Shepherd’s Legacy

• “Feed my lambs... Tend my sheep... Feed my sheep.” With these words, Jesus commissions Peter and entrusts the Church into human hands, guided always by Divine Grace.

• As we mourn the death of Pope Francis, we give thanks for his years of service as shepherd of the universal Church. He, too, heard that call from Jesus and responded—not without trials, not without criticism—but always with a deep love for Christ and for the poor, the forgotten, the wounded. His legacy is one of compassion, encounter, and prophetic courage. He challenged us to go to the peripheries, to see Christ in the marginalized, and to live the Gospel with joy.

May we now honor Pope Francis’ memory with prayers and lives that echo his witness. And may we, like Peter in today’s Gospel Reading, keep returning to “the shore”, to “the fre”, to the One who calls us by name and asks only one thing: “Do you love me?”

J Stewards of God’s Gifts

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reveals Himself to the disciples for the third time.

Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Formation: “To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.” As we continue through this Easter season, let us take the lessons and devotions we learned and practiced this past Lent and grow in our spirituality—so as to give proper worship to the Lord.

BECAUSE OF YOU,

our Society of St. Vincent De Paul Conference was able to help a young woman with expenses to attend a four year college and realize her dream of becoming a teacher. She had attended community college while working two part time jobs, but found her home life not conducive to study and needed to move away. Her sister, who was raising her, did not have the means to assist her with the costs of higher education.

With the help of SVDP, she applied for and received education grants to cover her tuition, but not housing, etc.

Through your generosity, we helped her with dorm expenses, a mini fridge, toiletries, clothing, and school supplies. Parish social ministry helped with bath items and bedding. One of our SVDP conference members helped her move into her dormitory. She is now on her way to realizing her dream!

The Addams Family: A Musical with a Modern Twist

The Saint Mary’s High School Performing Arts Program showcased its vitality with a remarkable production of The Addams Family! The spring musical exceeded expectations, featuring three outstanding performances in the newly renovated Edith Denihan Memorial Auditorium. The talented cast of students captivated and entertained theatergoers. Under the direction of Mr. Brian Stalter, the auditorium, along with the backstage crew, created the perfect setting to immerse attendees in the eerie home of Morticia and Gomez Addams, where the characters' antics and quirky personalities came to life. This production highlighted the hilarious and memorable characters from the original television series while presenting a modern storyline centered around Wednesday’s unconventional romance with a young man. The overarching themes of family, love, and acceptance were beautifully conveyed, emphasizing the importance of communication and understanding. A special thanks goes out to everyone who contributed to making this production memorable, especially the students in the program! Your God-given talents are a source of immense pride for our school! me the lities ed the rom ed nd d, who n the a ol!

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

MARIAN ARI

Circle

Marian Circle Formed to Bolster the Cycle of Generosity for St. Mary’s

Saint Mary’s High School recently held an inaugural reception in Marist Hall, a special event to introduce the Marian Circle, a new initiative aimed at fostering a community of dedicated supporters for the school, and gather their esteemed benefactors. Principal Gerard J. Buckley warmly welcomed the guests, acknowledging them as the founding members of the Marian Circle. He explained that the group’s name and its star symbol are significant in relation to the school. “Marian” refers to our patroness, St. Mary, while additional definitions highlight the word as the “Star of the Sea.”

He emphasized the unique role of the benefactors, stating, “You are the people in the tradition of our Blessed Mother, providing the light to guide our school through these rough seas.” Principal Buckley highlighted that the evening was “more than just a gathering” but a celebration of the profound impact that our Catholic faith, education, and philanthropy can have when united for a common purpose. He reassured the audience of the school’s commitment to its mission, emphasizing the critical role of the benefactors: “For St. Mary’s High School, you are the star and light that leads the way for the formation and education of our students well into the future. Your support is instrumental in our ability to provide the best education alongside the formation of faith, character, and service.”

The guests also heard a first-hand testimonial from Miss Samantha Avdoulos, the Valedictorian of the Class of 2025, who learned of her academic ranking just the week before the event. Miss Avdoulos, a resident of Whitestone shared that she joined St. Mary’s High School midway through her first year, having previously attended the largest Catholic high school in the United States. She remarked, “Although the student body was vast, the opportunities were limited. I needed to be in a place that would allow me to exercise my strengths while supporting my interests academically, athletically, and artistically. As cliché as it sounds, St. Mary’s allowed me to be a big fish in a small pond rather than just another statistic. I believe that my involvement and accomplishments are a clear indication of the kind of well-rounded student that can be fostered here, as that is the primary goal for all students at St. Mary’s.” With a diverse range of electives, athletics, and extracurricular activities, Miss Avdoulos showcased her energetic involvement alongside her rigorous course of studies, which included serving as a Senior Shepherd and holding the position of class president for three consecutive terms. “I do not wish for my accomplishments to be seen as separating me from my classmates,” she said, “but rather as evidence that your support over the past 30 years has allowed my classmates and me to become the best versions of ourselves and to make our school as beautiful and functional as it can be. St. Mary’s has brought me closer to the person I’ve always wanted to become. For that, I am forever grateful to all of you.”

If Miss Avdoulos’ class rank isn’t convincing enough, she also mentioned that the academic challenges she faced inspired her to work harder, giving her “the confidence to apply Early Decision to Boston College School of Management,” where she will attend this fall alongside her sibling, who graduated from St. Mary’s two years prior. Additionally, the eight Advanced Placement classes she completed will transfer as college credits as a freshman, earning her the AP Scholar with Honors award.

Overall, the newly recognized founding members of the Marian Circle were assured that their commitment and generosity toward the school are deeply appreciated and essential in this everchanging educational landscape, affirming their desire to support Catholic education and serve as beacons of light for students today and in the years to come.

If you would like to learn more about how your support can significantly impact students’ success at St. Mary’s High School, please contact Mr. Buckley at 516-627-2711 or email gbuckley@saintmaryshs.org.

Scripture Meditation

Read slowly, 3–4 times. Allow the words of Scripture to wash over your mind and heart. Allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you through this passage.

“Tey put him to death by hanging him on a tree. Tis man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.”

(Acts 10:39b–41)

For Refection

Allow yourself to refect for a while, being attentive to how the Lord is speaking in your heart.

How can you allow Jesus to put to death anything in your heart that prevents you from trusting God and his plan of love for your life? Ask Jesus to help you deepen your communion with God and become an even more efective witness to the transforming power of his Resurrection!

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
