Cover art: Te Return of the Prodigal Son. Artist: Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787).

Location: Museum of Fine Arts, Vienna, Austria.

Dear Parishioners,

“Father I have sinned against heaven and you.” (Luke 15:21)

Te word “prodigal” which means “waster or squanderer,” describes one who wastes gifts and resources. Te title “Prodigal Son” tells how the son “squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.” It is interesting and poignant that the father allows his younger son to leave. Sometimes the worst thing God can do is to give us what we want in order to show us that our desires can’t always bring satisfaction. Te prodigal son got what he wanted, but lost what he had. When we rebel against God’s will, He sometimes says, “All right, YOUR will be done! See how you like it!” God’s most severe punishment may be to give us what we want. Te lost son lusted for freedom without restraints and ended up enslaving himself. When his money ran out, his so-called friends deserted him. Tey were only friends of his wealth. He learned the hard way that we can’t enjoy the things money can buy if we ignore the things money cannot buy. Sin promises freedom, but it only brings slavery. It promises success, but it only brings failure. It promises life, but brings death.

When he gets to the point where he has nothing left, no money, friends, food, shelter, or dignity, the prodigal son complains about no one but himself. He speaks of no unworthiness but his own. He doesn’t blame his plight on his former evil companions. He admits his eagerness to leave the protection of his home and ofers no excuses to cover his guilt or justify his waywardness. It is in this “mature” realization that repentance and eventual change of life can occur. Guilt and shame are painful to face, yet we desperately need to see ourselves for what we are. Only then can we respond to God’s mercy.

Te returned son attempts to deliver his prepared speech to his father. He admits he has sinned against “heaven,” too shamed to even speak the name of God. He begins, but doesn’t get to fnish, for his father calls to the servants to bring out the best robe to cover the son’s poverty and shame; a ring as a seal and symbol of his identity as a member of the household; and shoes so that he can now walk in a new way. Also, shoes were not worn by servants! Te father does not humiliate his son, but welcomes him into all the privileges of the family and treats him with honor.

Sometimes we think we need to clean ourselves up before we come to Jesus. All we need is to come home and the Father will give His best even though we have sinned. If you’re afraid to come to Jesus; if you’re ashamed of your past; if all you have to ofer is your heart to Jesus, then do it! St. Paul reminds us today: “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” Tis is a reminder and an invitation from God Himself. So I implore you in the name of Jesus, go to confession, and then remember the loving father of the prodigal son. He is, in fact, the father of us all, and is ready to run to us with open arms. What a beautiful image! What a beautiful God!

Our Gift Shop, located in the ministry center below the church, is open on Sundays. Tere are wonderful religious gifts available that highlight the true meaning of Easter. I am so grateful to the entire volunteer staf of the shop for their hard work and dedication. Our Gift Shop provides superior Catholic gifts and cards for all occasions. Tey always re-direct our minds to who we are as believers.

A reminder that Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday night at 7:00 PM in the Church. Use these last few weeks of Lent wisely to deepen your relationship with Jesus.

If you are looking for a simple way to be spiritually renewed, develop a deeper relationship with Our Merciful Savior through His Blessed Mother, and grow in holiness, join us for a 33-day do-it-yourself retreat in preparation for Consecration to Jesus through Mary.

Participants commit 10-15 minutes daily to spiritual readings and prayerful ponderings at home. Observe Their 25th Anniversary on Sunday, April 6, 2025

Te following article appeared in the Parish Bulletin of April 16, 2000 announcing the upcoming commissioning of the new St. Mary’s Ministry of Consolation:

After many months of planning, organizing and training, St. Mary’s Ministry of Consolation is ready to begin. Msgr. McCann will recognize and install the members at the 11:30 A.M. Mass on Sunday, April 30th in the church. In this ministry, trained parishioners will minister to other parishioners following the death of a family member during the time of the wake and funeral.

Tey will assist with choices of readings, music, and liturgy for the funeral as well as completing the Planning Guide to assist the Celebrant with data about the deceased to personalize the funeral. Men and women, young and old will share their time, talents, and faith at a crucial time in a family’s faith journey. People may not have weddings in a family, but surely, they will have funerals. Our ministry is to use this time to bring the message and comfort of Jesus to our brothers and sisters.

So, welcome our ministers, pray for us, and understand we are here for you. If you would like to join us or want further information, please call Kaye Byrne, Chairperson.

Please pray with our Ministry for continued blessings for the special service the ministry performs for our parish and parishioners which follows the Corporal Work of Mercy: Bury the Dead.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Have you ever been to Adoration?

Adoration is a special way to pray to Jesus in the Eucharist. During Adoration, a priest will place the Eucharist in a monstrance—a beautiful vessel that holds the Host. It is a beautiful opportunity to step away from our noisy, busy lives and simply be with Jesus. Many people encounter Jesus for the frst time in their lives in Adoration. Tis is where they have their frst deeply personal experience of Jesus. Tey may have heard about Jesus their whole lives, they may have been receiving Jesus in the Eucharist every Sunday, but there is something about the experience of Jesus in Adoration that leads people to know Him. Tis shift from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus changes everything. And once they are awakened in this way, the Holy Spirit leads them to live their faith and participate in all types of ministries. Can you imagine what might happen if you would make an efort to spend time in Adoration this Lent?

Give yourself the chance to spend time in the presence of Jesus and your life will be transformed. It’s simple. It’s beautiful. And it works.

A NEW YOUTH SERVICE HOURS OPPORTUNITY

Faith Sharing for Service

Good Samaritan House is introducing a new way to obtain service hours. Anyone interested in hours can write a detailed essay in exchange for 1-3 service hours. (Hours given will be based on perceived effort based on the essay.) The essays need to be well thought out and well written. They should be one (1) page single-spaced.

If your essay is selected for publishing in our bulletin, you will not only receive one extra hour of community service, but also have the opportunity to inspire others with your work.

The following essay prompts are designed to help you reflect on your faith journey and share your experiences with the community.

1. Tell us about a time when you saw something or something that took place in your life that made you feel particularly close to God, or that deepened your faith. Describe how it impacted your faith or how it changed your perspective.

2. Select your favorite bible verse or one that you find particularly inspiring or impactful, and tell why the verse moves you. Have you ever used the verse to drive an action or used the verse when making a decision?

3. Describe in your own words how the life of Jesus Christ impacts your walk with God.

4. Who has been a spiritual role model in your life and how?

5. Share an example of a time when you witnessed a miracle or experienced a supernatural intervention.

6. Give an example of when God used your struggles for a greater good.

Please submit your essay along with your name, grade, school, and parent contact info directly to kkosciusko@stmary.ws. Entries are on a rolling basis throughout the year.

We look forward to reading your faith-based experiences and perspectives in the coming months! We encourage you to participate and share your stories. For additional information, please contact Good Samaritan House at 516 365 2705 or email our Director, Kathleen Kosciusko: kkosciusko@stmary.ws

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. Tere are no special qualifcations to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

In today’s Gospel the prodigal son repents and fnds mercy in the heart of his father. Know that your penance during Lent can give the poor the grace of fnding the merciful heart of God the Father. In the month of March, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families, providing food, assistance with utility and rent bills, etc. Tank You!

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.

Top Reasons to Oppose Assisted Suicide

Read the full version at respectlife.org/reasons-against-assisted-suicide.

Some polls indicate that the public is receptive to assisted suicide. But the same polls show that people’s views shift when they learn about its dangers—especially the dangers for those who are poor, elderly, disabled, or without access to good medical care. Consider that, in Oregon and California, some patients’ health insurance offered to pay for assisted suicide, but not treatment. And in states where assisted suicide is legal, often no psychiatric evaluation or treatment is required. Additionally, assisted suicide fosters discrimination by creating two classes of people: those whose suicides we spend millions of dollars to prevent and those whose suicides we assist and treat as a positive good.

But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it.
