Behind Locked Doors: When Mercy Walks In…

1. Jesus Comes with Peace and Mercy

On the evening of the resurrection, the disciples are locked in a room, full of fear and shame. Despite their abandonment of Him, Jesus enters and says, “Peace be with you.” He doesn’t bring reproach — He brings mercy. Te heart of the Risen Lord is full of compassion, not condemnation.

Tis is exactly what Divine Mercy is about: the Love that seeks us out, even when we hide behind “locked doors”! Jesus himself told St. Faustina Kowalska, the Apostle of the Divine Mercy, “Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.” (Diary, 699) Jesus longs to heal, not to punish. In fact, His frst words after the resurrection are words of peace, and His frst act is to reassure.

2. Te Gift and Mission of Forgiveness

Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on the disciples and says, “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.” In this, He entrusts them — and the Church — with the Ministry of Mercy: the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Tis is the Divine Mercy in action: a real, sacramental way to encounter God’s forgiveness. Jesus told St. Faustina, “Tell souls where they are to look for solace; that is, in the Tribunal of Mercy [that is, the Sacrament of Reconciliation].” (Diary, 1448)

At the canonization of St. Faustina in the year 2000, Pope St. John Paul II proclaimed: “Divine Mercy! Tis is the Easter gift that the Church receives from the risen Christ and ofers to humanity.” It is no coincidence that Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter. Mercy is the frst fruit of the Resurrection.

Last Monday, April 21st, we received news of the passing of Pope Francis — a man who bore the message of mercy on his lips and in his life. From his very frst papal words — “And now, let us begin this journey: Bishop and People… a journey of fraternity, of love, of trust…” — to his fnal days, Pope Francis sought to echo the mercy of Christ. He reminded the world over and over again that “the name of God is Mercy.” His witness was one of tenderness, especially for the poor, the forgotten, and the sinner. In many ways, his entire pontifcate was an invitation to walk through the Door of Mercy.

3. Tomas: From Doubt to Trust

Tomas wasn’t present during the frst appearance of Jesus, and he refuses to believe unless he can touch Christ’s wounds himself. Jesus doesn’t dismiss his doubt; He returns a week later and invites Tomas to see and believe. Tis gentle response shows us that Jesus is patient with our struggles. He meets us in our weakness.

Tomas’ declaration, “My Lord and my God!” is not only a confession of faith, but a leap of trust. It’s the same trust the Divine Mercy devotion invites us into.

Today’s Gospel reading and Divine Mercy Feast speak directly to the heart:

• Jesus ofers peace where there is fear.

• He ofers forgiveness where there is guilt.

• He invites us to trust where there is doubt.

Fr. Anthony Parish Administrator

Join us this Sunday, April 27, at 3:00 PM to celebrate the Feast of Divine Mercy. Let us come together in prayer and thanksgiving to seek the Lord’s abundant mercy for ourselves, our families, and the whole world. All are welcome. “Jesus, I trust in You!”

SAVE THE DATE! Bishop Barres’ Statement on the Death of Pope Francis

April 21, 2025

As we mourn the death of Pope Francis on this Easter Octave Monday and the gift of his contemplative global evangelization grounded in Matthew 25 and the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, we give thanks to Father, Son and Holy Spirit for his unique graces and charisms and the compelling way during his Pontificate that he has been a Light of Jesus Christ and the mission of mercy of the Catholic Church to the world.

In Evangelii Gaudium (2013), Pope Francis speaks about the original freshness of the Gospel: “Jesus can also break through the dull categories with which we would enclose him and he constantly amazes us by his divine creativity. Whenever we make the effort to return to the source and to recover the original freshness of the Gospel, new avenues arise, new paths of creativity open up, with different forms of expression, more eloquent signs and words with new meaning for today’s world. Every form of authentic evangelization is always ‘new.’” (11)

Pope Francis’ commitment to the freshness of the Gospel and his desire to forge new paths of mission creativity were expressed in his encyclicals Lumen Fidei (2013), Laudato si’ (2015), Fratelli Tutti (2020), and Dilexit Nos (2024), along with his apostolic exhortations Evangelii Gaudium (2013), Amoris Laetitia (2016) and Gaudete et Exsultate (2018), Christus Vivit (2019), Querida Amazonia (2020), Laudate Deum (2023), and C’est la confiance (2023).

This section of Evangelii Gaudium captures, I believe, Pope Francis’ passionate love for the Church and the world and it will continue to inspire us as the Holy Spirit leads us further into the 21st century: “How I long to find the right words to stir up enthusiasm for a new chapter of evangelization full of fervor, joy, generosity, courage, boundless love and attraction! Yet I realize that no words of encouragement will be enough unless the fire of the Holy Spirit burns in our hearts. A spirit-filled evangelization is one guided by the Holy Spirit, for he is the soul of the Church called to proclaim the Gospel…I once more invoke the Holy Spirit. I implore him to come and renew the Church, to stir and impel her to go forth boldly to evangelize all peoples.” (261)

Today, we pray for the soul of Pope Francis, we pray for the College of Cardinals which will elect his successor, and we pray for his successor who will be elevated to the Chair of Saint Peter.

As we pray for the soul of our Holy Father Pope Francis on this Easter Octave Monday, we remember his words on our Lord’s Resurrection.

In The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis writes: “Christ’s resurrection is not an event of the past; it contains a vital power which has permeated the world. Where all seems to be dead, signs of the resurrection suddenly spring up. It is an irresistible force…Each day in our world beauty is born anew, it rises transformed through the storms of history…Such is the power of the resurrection, and all who evangelize are instruments of that power.” (276)

May the Word of God be a Light and a Lamp for our steps and may the Holy Spirit lead and guide us!

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
