Dear Parishioners,

“Christ

is Risen…He is Truly Risen!”

For our Eastern Rite Catholics and the Orthodox, this is the greeting they ofer to each other during the Easter Season. What a wonderful way to greet other believers...to proclaim the Resurrection of Jesus. Tese are my favorite days of the Church. Easter is such a reminder of the new Life Jesus promises. One of the things I love is that the world around us usually proclaims that New Life. If we look around in our gardens, we can see the crocuses and dafodils springing forth from the earth. Te world that looked so dead is now bursting with the signs of spring life. Even in our Church, the images, which were shrouded in purple, have now been revealed in the power of the Resurrection.

I hope that these days of celebration don’t pass us by without refecting on the meaning of Easter. If we truly believe that the Jesus who died on the Cross was raised on Easter, then we have to ask ourselves “What does it mean for our lives?”

Easter is not a celebration of spring or even of chocolate (as much as I love chocolate); it is the promise of Jesus that, even if we die to this life, we have the promise of Life to come. But Eternal Life is a free gift that must be freely accepted on our part. In being accepted, it requires from us a response to God. Tat response is a turning from sin in our own lives and embracing God’s vision for our lives. It is participating at Mass each week to be nourished by the Real and True Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. It is also living in truth the Gospel, sowing the seeds of the love of Jesus, and living each day knowing how much we ARE loved. It is turning to God in Jesus even when and especially when the world seems to prefer the darkness of sin and death. So that through the faith and power of the Resurrection, we can bring the healing and loving Light of Jesus to our sometimes hurting world. A world that longs for that promised peace. Never succumb to the powers of darkness; you have been enlightened by Jesus…TRUST. Let us refect and ponder who Jesus is for us and how His presence is lived each day. Be bearers of His message of peace and hope to all you meet. Come to the Table of the Lord!

What a joy it is for me to celebrate Holy Week and Easter with you as your Pastor. I feel so blessed by God for all He has done for me. I am grateful to my staf for all they do to sow the seeds of the Gospel at St. Mary’s. I am also grateful and thankful for all those who give so much of themselves and yet, at times, seem to go unnoticed. I am so touched by the gifts that we share as stewards, and I know it makes this parish the wonderful community that it is.

May we never take our gifts and blessings for granted and may the joy of Easter remain with us long after the fowers have died and the Alleluias fade into the background. We are blessed and redeemed by a God who loves us. What joy that understanding should be for us!

As you know, this is my last weekend in the parish. It is with deep sadness that I leave, but hopeful always for the future. It has been an absolute joy and blessing to serve as your pastor these past ten years. I have found the people of St. Mary’s to be kind, supportive, and prayerful. What a testament to you all!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! As I begin not only care but quality time with my parents on this next phase of my life journey and prepare for a sabbatical in Rome, please know I will hold you close in prayer. I look forward to returning June 7th and 8th for a farewell Mass and to greet you all again.

And I want to especially thank the wonderful staf here at St. Mary’s and the various ministries that make up this wonderfully active and complex parish. Tose involve in media, faith, formation and teaching, social ministry, plant maintenance, and operations, ofce staf, and the many, many volunteers. I am grateful to the priests I live with, Fr. Anthony and Fr. Raf, who made the rectory more than just a place for priests to live but a home.

J From the Pastor’s Desk

As you have heard, Fr. Anthony has been appointed temporary administrator of St. Mary’s. I know he will do, as he does in all things, a wonderful job. A new pastor will be appointed in June and I ask that you welcome him in his new ministry as you welcomed me.

On behalf of myself, Fr. Anthony, Fr. Raf, the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Dominican Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist, and the entire staf here at St. Mary’s, we wish you and your families a very blessed and prayerful Easter.

CHRIST IS RISEN…HE IS TRULY RISEN!

In the Resurrected Jesus and Mary His Mother, Fr. Bob

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

Lenten Soup Supper Serves Up Fellowship and a Flavorful Meal

On Friday, March 28, 2025, more than 100 people gathered in the Saint Mary’s Middle School café for a simple dinner where fellowship and an assortment of seven flavorful homemade soups – including one made by High School faculty member Mr. Hart, collided to make the event a resounding success. By putting their faith into action, the Daughters of Mary (DOM) ministry organized the event with beautiful grace and effort. Their impact was profound, providing the opportunity for their guests to enjoy a meal together before attending the Stations of the Cross that evening in the Church of St. Mary.

With attendees ranging in ages, the eclectic group was greeted by the smiles and welcoming spirit of their host members of the all-female youth ministry, an offshoot of the parish’s Rosary Society, who were proudly dressed alike, donning their group’s t-shirts. The group’s moderator, faculty member, Mrs. Erin Stober, is “pleased to see the bright and faith-filled energy these young ladies share in school and throughout the community. Their work is commended, and I am grateful to be a small part of their extraordinary work.”

With a nominal admission fee of $5 per person and the generosity of several guests, the event was not just a success in terms of attendance but also in its impact. The event raised over $1,000 for laundry soap, cleaning supplies, and toiletries for the Good Samaritan House (GSH), a significant contribution that will help provide these much-needed necessities to the clients of the parish-run social ministry program.

This achievement is a testament to the generosity and compassion of the St. Mary’s community, and everyone should feel proud of the difference they’ve made.

“I love the success of the night. I love that the girls are rallying around our efforts. Congratulations to all! Thank you for all you do for Good Samaritan House and our under-served population,” said Kathleen Kosciusko, Director of the GSH, echoing the pride and accomplishment that filled the room.

Saoirse McNamara ’22, ’26, a founding youth member of the DOM, shared,

“The girls and I were so honored to serve the parish community that has had such an impact on each of us as we grow in our faith! Our mission as Rosarians is to promote devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary through reciting the Rosary, foster community and spiritual growth, and provide service to the parish and wider community. We also try to live out our school’s motto: ‘Omnia ad Jesum per Mariam’ - Everything to Jesus through Mary!”

The Daughters of Mary has grown and flourished over the past few years, and will have 20 young ladies inducted into St. Mary’s Rosary Society in May. This marks a significant milestone as the first youth group of its size to become part of the Society. Their growth, achievements, and dedication to the Blessed Mother, Mary, serve as an inspiration to all. This unique opportunity is open to all young ladies in grades 8-12 with a connection to the St. Mary’s parish or school community.

The Daughters of Mary express their gratitude to Rosarians Mrs. Cathy Morrissey and Mrs. Erin McNamara for being the founders of the DOM ministry and extend heartfelt thanks to parents Mrs. Laura Sciametta, Mrs. Michele Bernic, Mrs. Judy Bardi, Mrs. Carol Moon, Mrs. Sarah Fey, and all moms who assisted with the Supper. In addition, they joyously thank faculty members Mrs. Erin Stoeber, Sr. Agnes Maria, and Sr. Mary Aquinas for their work in forming the Daughters of Mary each day throughout the school year.

For information on joining the Daughters of Mary, don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Stober via email: estober@saintmaryshs.org.

Exposition

Sunday of Divine Mercy April 27, 2025

of the Blessed Sacrament after the 12:00 Noon Mass. Three Consecutive Holy Hours:

1:00-2:00pm 2:00-3:00pm 3:00-4:00pm (Join in any one).

Closing Benediction at 4:00pm.

Jesus’ Message of Mercy is summarized as ABC:

A- Ask for God’s Mercy

B- Be merciful to others

C- Completely trust in God’s mercy.

The Five Elements of the Message are summarized as FINCH:

F- Feast of Divine Mercy

I- Image of Divine Mercy

N- Novena of Divine Mercy

C- Chaplet of Divine Mercy

H- Hour of Mercy

We wish to feature the Chaplet of Divine Mercy this year. Jesus revealed it to Sr. Faustina as a powerful prayer He wants everyone pray. Sr. Faustina was interceding in her own words about a dire situation – to no avail. Ten the Lord gave her the words of the chaplet, and as she began to pray those words the hand of the ‘angel of punishment’ was stayed! Te Lord directed her to pray in those words, and to teach others to do the same.

“Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you…Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death…When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the Just Judge but as the Merciful Savior…Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infnite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy…Trough the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will” (Diary, 687, 1541, 1731).

Te Chaplet can be prayed anytime, anywhere. Te Lord also asked that it be recited as a novena over the 9 days before the Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday). We can pray it for our own personal intentions, for others, for the Lord’s intentions. “By this novena [of chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to souls” (Diary, 796).

HAPPY DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY! May the Divine Mercy ever bless you and yours! And may you ever come to Him with the vessel of Trust – and draw!

The Chaplet of Mercy

Recite this chaplet on the beads of the Rosary in the following manner: First of all, say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the I Believe in God. On the Our Father Beads, say the following words: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. On the Hail Mary Beads, say the following words: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. In conclusion, recite these words three times: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Help Tose in Need to “See and Believe” in the Resurrection

Today as we celebrate the feast of Easter, like Mary Magdalene and the Disciples we fnd the challenge of also seeing and believing the resurrection. As you put your gift into the St. Vincent de Paul box, you help those who are poor and hungry to “see and believe” in the Resurrection.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. DESPITE OUR BUSY DAY AND TIME, SAINTS JOHN PAUL II AND MOTHER TERESA KNEW THAT THE QUICKEST WAY TO BECOME A SAINT IS THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR BLESSED MOTHER, MARY. MARY LEADS US TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS.

If you are looking for a simple way to be spiritually renewed, develop a deeper relationship with Our Merciful Savior through His Blessed Mother, and grow in holiness, join us for a 33-day do-it-yourself retreat in preparation for Consecration to Jesus through Mary.

We will use the book 33 Days to Morning Group Retreat and Study Guide, by Father Michael Gaitley, to guide us through the retreat, which begins April 24 and continues for six weeks. Participants commit 10-15 minutes daily to spiritual readings and prayerful ponderings at home. Father Michael’s book, based on the writings of St. Louis de Montfort and updated to include the modern perspective of Saints John Paul II, Mother Teresa, and Maximillian Kolbe, offers readers a new dawn and a fresh start for one’s spiritual journey.

Our retreat will culminate on May 31, 2025, the Feast of the Visitation. For those able to attend this consecration day ceremony, we will make our consecration at St. Mary’s after 9:00 AM Mass. Participants may also be consecrated privately at home or at any Church. (We also invite those who have already completed the Consecration to Jesus through Mary retreat to join us for any or all of our programs and to participate in our May 31 consecration ceremony.)

Uncertain: Change Your Toughts and Awaken Your Faith

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

(Philippians 4:13)

In this Easter Season we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. He was sent to spread the word and show us the way. His example has saved so many throughout the centuries. If we look at the history of the world, uncertainty is always a component that is alive and functioning. Humans hate uncertainty. We like to have life that is predictable, and we all want to know what the next step is.

When life as we know it gets shaky for whatever the reasons, our anxiety levels rise. Tat is normal. Remember, we all have anxiety. Te goal is to manage it so it doesn’t take over your functioning.

Te frst question is what do we do when uncertainty spikes increasing our anxiety and setting of a fre within? Te answer is to calm ourselves from within. How does one do that? For me, I go frst to God. I pray to HIM. My prayer is an actual conversation telling HIM I know I can deal with whatever comes my way no matter how difcult. I envision HIM within me with the strength and conviction that his life has shown me. I can feel this message within as a strength and calm within grows. I take deep breaths and envision the strength of God within me. HIS strength becomes mine.

God is our eternal father and Mary our mother. We are never alone in what we are doing or facing. I can remember when my children were

younger. I would tell them to do something. I could see they were not overjoyed with my direction. Ten, I would say, “Do it for me, if not for yourself, and then it will become yours.” Tey then did follow the directions and the success was theirs.

When we experience heightened anxiety, I tell my patients, “Our brain goes on fre.” We need to put out the fre. I do it with prayer and taking deep breaths “in relationship with God.” Reading Bible verses is also another step you can take to help you relax and meditate and calm your anxiety. Being in community; e.g., through a Bible Study group, with others with whom you can share your concerns with, enables you to calm yourself as you learn together. You are awakening and building your relationship with Christ.

Learning to calm your emotions and your physical being gets you ready to take the necessary steps to deal with whatever crisis comes your way. Start now working on your emotionality so you are prepared for whatever comes your way. Remember, uncertainty is always present and sometimes more than other times.

As you calm your mind and body, you can make plans on how to proceed to solve the issues at hand that are steeped in uncertainty. Our thinking prepares us for acting and reacting. Tink about the following:

1. Can you really change what is happening?

2. Is what you wished for realistic?

3. Do you need to change your expectations?

4. Accept what you need to do even if you don’t want to.

5. Realize things will get resolved and the crisis will pass, and you will be able to cope.

For example: You are faced with someone who is ill in your family. Te immediate reaction might be fear and anxiety. First, you need to calm yourself as explained above. Ten you can do the next steps. If you are practicing building your faith and calm, God is there just for the asking. Find out all the options available to help the ill person. I know sometimes navigating the medical system can be daunting. Take deep breaths and use your relationship with God to keep you calm and stay on course to help your relative and family member. Not until you have exhausted all help available, then you need to adjust your expectations and proceed with always taking care of yourself and the patient. Taking care of you means keeping your anxiety as low as possible so you can think straight. If you don’t take care of you, how will you be able to help another?

I will share an incident that happened to me. My husband got quite ill and wasn’t getting the proper help. For some reason, I reached out to someone from my faith community and asked if she knew anyone who could help me fnd a doctor to help my husband. She led me to just the right person. I don’t know why I picked her to ask. I have so many doctors in my professional and personal life, and I reached out to my faith community. Tis was I believe divine intervention.

Te reason I am sharing this with you is to prepare yourself in all ways and expanding your faith and your faith community is part of your overall health and strength through God. You are awaking your faith and self to God enabling you to make informed decisions.

(continued -->)

Dr. Patricia Pitta (con’t.)

Hold onto your faith relationships and keep God closer even when the crisis is over and build upon it by building a faith community to enhance your understanding of the WORD.

You set the example for your family and friends. You are a disciple of Christ as you live a faith-flled life that is not predictable, but doable as you deal with the many stages and fuctuations of life. See a prayer below to say to calm your mind, body, and thinking.

My Dear Jesus: Help me build my strength to deal with uncertainty through knowing you and the love you have for me and all mankind. Your father sent YOU to us to show us the way and be there to help us learn to know the love of God that can help us in every way. I want to stay positive, steadfast, and loving and do what is necessary to live my faith-flled life and be successful no matter what uncertainty is present.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

Do you know that God is part of your marriage? Te Sacrament of marriage is holy. In the Acts of the Apostles 10:37-38, 43, it says,”Peter proceeded to speak and said: You know what has happened all over Judea, how God annointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed, for God was with him. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.” God annoints your marriage. He heals your relationship. He will show you how to forgive one another. Marriage encounter couples present talks about God’s desire, about healing and forgiveness, and other tools to help enrich your relationship.
