From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Today the Church enters into the most solemn and holiest of her days. Te forty days of Lenten fasting, prayer, and almsgiving have been preparing us to celebrate the mysteries of our redemption. We experience our Passover from death to life through the saving and loving actions of Jesus.

Palm Sunday is a day of dichotomy. At the beginning of our liturgy, Jesus is hailed as King and the crowd cries out “Hosanna.” But the cries of joy will quickly turn into a call for His death. He will fnd those who loved and supported Him throughout His ministry have run for cover. It is with this understanding that Holy Week begins. You will notice that we end the liturgy in silence as a reminder of the atmosphere we should create in our own lives. In the silence of our prayer, we listen to the words of these days to experience the ritual and live it anew. Tough they may be familiar words and actions, we are diferent and we must be open to the power of the Holy Spirit that wants to speak to us today and at this moment in our lives.

Holy Tursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist (Mass) and the creation of the priesthood. It is in the bread and wine (food for our journey) that Jesus will be remembered for all time. When we gather to worship the Lord at Mass, He becomes present, not as a symbol under the Bread and Wine, but really and truly present, His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. We also learn how to live as the Disciples of Jesus. As He, who is Lord, washed the feet of the eleven, so we are called to be “foot washers” to one another. Te Blessed Sacrament (the Eucharist) will be solemnly processed from the church to the chapel. Te Altar of Repose will be in the chapel and the faithful are invited to spend time before the Lord in silence. Te doors of the Church will be left open till 11:00 PM for the faithful to come to sit and pray before and with the Lord in the Eucharist.

Good Friday the ultimate act of love is given to us. Jesus willingly dies on the cross to save us from our sins and to give us a share in everlasting life. At the 3:00 PM liturgy, the Church invites us to venerate the wood of the Cross, that frst altar of sacrifce of the New Covenant. At 7:00 PM, our Adult Choir will lead us in sung solemn Stations of the Cross. It will be a beautiful and moving experience.

Holy Saturday the Church waits in silence for the frst light of dawn that heralds the end of death because of that frst Easter morning. At the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, (which is called the Mother of all Liturgies of the Church), we gather to hear the words of Sacred Scripture (the Bible). Tese words tell the history of our salvation. Te Gloria (which has not been sung in Lent) will ring in Easter Day and the joyful hymns and songs of victory. Purple will be replaced by white and gold and the stark and bare Church will be flled with fowers and beauty as signs of the joy of the Resurrection and New Life. It is the night those adults who have been preparing for Baptism will be received into the Church.

Prepare, my sisters and brothers, to truly celebrate these days of wonder and awe. I invite and encourage you to participate in as many of the liturgies as possible. If you have never been to the Easter Vigil, I would encourage you to attend and let yourself be touched by the symbols and rituals. It is truly a moving and joyful night.

You will notice that the Church does not celebrate morning Mass during the Sacred Triduum (Holy Tursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday), but to mark the solemnity and prepare for the celebrations in the evening, we gather at 9:00 AM to celebrate the Morning Prayer of the Church.

I encourage you also to take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) to confess your sins and enter with purity into these wondrous days. Please note that Monday, April 14th is the Diocesan Day of Reconciliation. In every parish throughout the Diocese (and in the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn) priests will be available in all churches from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 to 9:00 PM for those wishing to go to Confession. We ask that you line up in the enter aisle to allow the priests to leave for a break. Confessions will also be heard from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Holy Saturday. At 11:00 AM we will have the ceremony of the blessing of the baskets and food for your Easter tables.

Tere is much going on and many blessings that will be ofered to us. Use these days wisely so that together we may encounter the living God.

Wishing you and your families a blessed and joyful Holy Week, In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Good Friday Collection

Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifcal Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land, where they are now less than 2% of the population. Your support is essential to help the Church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, and ofer religious education. Te Pontifcal Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines of Christianity, including in Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem, to name only a few. Te pandemic had hit Christians in the Holy Land particularly hard. Most of them depend on pilgrimages for work. Te war made their situation even more dire. In these times of crisis, the Pontifcal Good Friday Collection is necessary to meet the basic needs of the People of God still living in this Land and to maintain a Christian presence where the Church was born. When you contribute to the Pontifcal Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land.

PLEASE BE GENEROUS!

The Parish Office will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday

DESPITE OUR BUSY DAY AND TIME, SAINTS JOHN PAUL II AND MOTHER TERESA KNEW THAT THE QUICKEST WAY TO BECOME A SAINT IS THROUGH A RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR BLESSED MOTHER, MARY. MARY LEADS US TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS.

If you are looking for a simple way to be spiritually renewed, develop a deeper relationship with Our Merciful Savior through His Blessed Mother, and grow in holiness, join us for a 33-day do-it-yourself retreat in preparation for Consecration to Jesus through Mary.

We will use the book 33 Days to Morning Group Retreat and Study Guide, by Father Michael Gaitley, to guide us through the retreat, which begins April 24 and continues for six weeks. Participants commit 10-15 minutes daily to spiritual readings and prayerful ponderings at home. Father Michael’s book, based on the writings of St. Louis de Montfort and updated to include the modern perspective of Saints John Paul II, Mother Teresa, and Maximillian Kolbe, offers readers a new dawn and a fresh start for one’s spiritual journey.

Our retreat will culminate on May 31, 2025, the Feast of the Visitation. For those able to attend this consecration day ceremony, we will make our consecration at St. Mary’s after 9:00 AM Mass. Participants may also be consecrated privately at home or at any Church. (We also invite those who have already completed the Consecration to Jesus through Mary retreat to join us for any or all of our programs and to participate in our May 31 consecration ceremony.)

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

In our marriages we need to speak/ communicate and listen well to our spouse. In Isaiah:50:4-5, 7, it says,”Te Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning, he opens my ear that I may hear. Te Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced.” Marriage encounter has tools to help enrich your relationship. Check out a Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME.org). It will also help you to grow in faith with one another. Some of the dates to sign up are:

April 25-27, 2025 in East Sandwich, MA

June 27-29, 2025 in Huntington, NY

Worldwide Marriage Encounter sponsors a variety of in-person and virtual marriage experiences, some on weekends and some on seven weekdays. Couples explore their relationship with each other, God, and the Church. Registration is limited; there is a $100 application fee. For more information or to apply, call Kevin & Regina Hickson at 516-554-3835 or https://wwmenyli.org/.
